I want to emphasize what a huge gap there is between what is known about Covid--not by online Covid-safe communities or fringe scientists, but by large, mainstream institutions--and what people choose to actually do about it.
The British Heart Foundation:

The American Heart Association:

In 20 years or so, people will probably look back in confusion, and really annoying articles are going to be written in the NYT about how the Secret Real Devastating Impacts of Covid were Unknown by scientists for the longest time. This isn't true. We continue to learn every day, and Covid is still a very new disease, but the gist of everything we know today was already known or heavily suspected in 2020.
The public is being misled and lied to by omission, yes, but it's not exactly secret or hidden information when anyone can look it up for free, without any difficulty. This isn't fringe science--we're talking about peer-reviewed studies published in Nature, one of the most prestigious academic journals in the world. We're talking about things discussed in Forbes articles. All kinds of information is freely acknowledged on these large, well-known association pages.
People know. Unfortunately, as we're seeing with Palestine--our leaders don't care about human lives or suffering. Nor can we make them do anything by asking nicely.

A federal court on Tuesday temporarily blocked enforcement of a Florida law that prohibits the administration of sex-change procedures on children under 18. The opinion, by Judge Robert L. Hinkle, leans heavily on medical and scientific rationales to argue that it is unconstitutional to ban the use of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgery on teenagers who feel alienated from their bodies.
Twenty states maintain age restrictions on sex-change procedures, and the problem they face is explaining to judges that American medical associations aren’t following the best available evidence. This is known to European health authorities and has been reported in such prestigious publications as the British Medical Journal. But American judges need some way to evaluate conflicting scientific authorities—especially as institutions responsible for ensuring that medical professionals have access to high-quality research aren’t functioning as they should.
A case in point: Springer, an academic publishing giant, has decided to retract an article that appeared last month in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. The retraction is expected to take effect June 12.
The article’s authors are listed as Michael Bailey and Suzanna Diaz. Mr. Bailey is a well-respected scientist, with dozens of publications to his name. The other author writes under a pseudonym to protect the privacy of her daughter, who suffers from gender dysphoria.
Their new paper is based on survey responses from more than 1,600 parents who reported that their children, who were previously comfortable in their bodies, suddenly declared a transgender identity after extensive exposure to social media and peer influence. Mr. Bailey’s and Ms. Diaz’s sin was to analyze rapid onset gender dysphoria, or ROGD. Gender activists hate any suggestion that transgender identities are anything but innate and immutable. Even mentioning the possibility that trans identity is socially influenced or a phase threatens their claims that children can know early in life they have a permanent transgender identity and therefore that they should have broad access to permanent body-modifying and sterilizing procedures.
Within days of publication, a group of activists wrote a public letter condemning the article and calling for the termination of the journal’s editor. Among the letter’s signatories is Marci Bowers, a prominent genital surgeon and president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, an advocacy organization that promotes sex changes for minors.
Nearly 2,000 researchers and academics signed a counter letter in support of the article. Springer nonetheless decided to retract the paper without disciplining its editor. Springer initially asserted that the study needed approval from an institutional review board. But it quickly abandoned that rationale, which was false.
The publisher now maintains that the retraction is due to improper participant consent. While the respondents consented to the publication of the survey’s results, Springer insists they didn’t specifically agree to publication in a scholarly or peer-reviewed journal. That’s a strange and retrospective requirement, especially considering that Springer and other major publishers have published thousands of survey papers without this type of consent.
Anyone familiar with the controversy over transgender medicine knows what is going on. Activists put pressure on Springer to retract an article with conclusions they didn’t like, and Springer caved in. We’ve become accustomed to seeing these capitulations in academia, media and the corporate world, but it is especially disturbing to see in a respected medical journal.
Rather than appreciate the long-term risk to itself and the scientific community from doing the bidding of activists, Springer has instead agreed to evaluate and retract all survey papers that lack the newly required consent. If Springer follows through on its promise, hundreds of authors who chose to publish in Springer’s journals may have their research retracted.
The publications that support what they call “gender-affirming care” rely heavily on surveys. The U.S. Transgender Survey of 2015, for instance, has generated several influential papers. As it happens, the USTS didn’t inform participants that their answers would be published in peer-reviewed journals.
This kind of double standard runs through gender-medicine research. Papers advocating “gender transition” are readily accepted by leading scientific journals despite having grave methodological flaws and biases. Work that questions gender-transition orthodoxy stands almost no chance of being published in the best-known journals. Every now and then, an errant research paper slips past the censors, but should it prove significant enough to threaten the settled science narrative, retribution is swift and merciless. The researcher Lisa Littman learned this lesson in 2018, when she was widely attacked after publishing on the topic. Mr. Bailey and Ms. Diaz are learning it now.
The idea is to manufacture the appearance of scientific consensus where there is none. The pseudo-consensus then allows such American medical associations as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Endocrine Society to recommend body-altering procedures for children.
While many Americans have heard news about the wave of states passing legislation that curbs sex changes for the young, few realize that an equally fierce, and arguably far more important, battle is raging: the battle for the integrity of the scientific process. It is a fight for the ability to have censorship-free scientific debate as a means to advance human knowledge.
==
Here's the thing: even if it's wrong, you refute it by making a better scientific case, with better evidence. You show where the flaws are. You don't throw a hissy-fit and cry until it goes away.

Hi Florence! I was wondering if you had advice on how to get your dissertations and writing published. I have some stuff I’d like to get seen but have no idea where to begin!
It’s very field dependent. The first thing to decide is whether you want to publish it as a book or divide it up into articles.
That will partly depend on how your dissertation fits together—would it be weird to split it up or would it actually feel natural—and partly depend on your field—humanities and some social sciences value books, natural sciences don’t really.
Overall, papers do tend to get more readers than books because books are expensive. Four or five peer-reviewed papers also tend to have more value on an academic CV than books. However, books look better to the media—they think “oh this person wrote the book on this.”
As for where… well that’s super field dependent but I recommend aiming high and just going down the list from most prestigious to less prestigious as it gets rejected. For books, go with a university press if you want academic creds. It’ll be harder to sell yourself to a trade press if it’s based on a dissertation but you can do it.
There are books on how to turn a dissertation into a book—get one. They help a lot. I wrote my dissertation very book-like so I didn’t have to do much to change it, but I already had experience with book publishing so it’s not an usual situation.
If you go down the article route, that’s just a matter of splitting your dissertation into standalone and coherent articles, and fixing up the formatting to whatever journal you’re submitting to.
Hope that helps!

* using "accepted for publication" as the metric because I realise things sometimes take years to actually come out. in this case i mean peer-reviewed academic publications (but postgrad journals etc count, it doesn't have to be a fancy prestigious thing, i just mean as opposed to a 500-word column in your uni's newspaper or something)
i guess if you're in the kind of field where papers have many authors and you get to be in the list because you're a member of that lab, even if you didn't write the paper, that also counts? i don't really know how stem publications work tho. i am in a field where most articles are single author, sometimes two authors but rarely more
honestly this is just curiosity on my part. it's pretty limited data since i won't know what fields people are in (or if you sought publication sooner but it didn't work out) but i just wanna get a sense of what's typical

Resources for Academic Publishing
This post I made a while back got quite popular. One of the things that showed up often in the tags is "what about paying for academic publishing?"
Basically, the same idea applies. If a journal approaches you and says "hey, we'll publish your article super fast and your just need to pay us this fee," be wary. Academic publishing is slow by design to allow for the peer review process. Predatory journals will take your money and publish your article, but skip the peer review process that makes sure your research is sound. So if you publish with them, not only will you be out a boatload of money, but your integrity as a researcher will be tainted.
That being said, there are many academic journals that do charge fees to publish with them. This article does a good job explaining the different fees that a journal might have.
Since we live in a capitalist society, academic publishers need to make money. To do this, they have to charge the reader and/or the author. Because the potential audience of an academic article is much smaller than the potential audience for, say, the latest vampire romance, publishers by necessity often have to charge authors to publish.
In the rest of this very long post, I'll try my best to give you an overview of ways to publish your research without breaking the bank.
So what's an aspiring academic to do? You are probably not swimming in cash (I just finished grad school, l feel your pain). That's where the magical world of grants comes in. If you are associated with a college or university, see if they offer publication grants. These are often administered through the library, but they can also be available by a department. At my university, the Graduate and Professional Student Association offered quarterly publication grants of up to $1,200 for graduation students to publish their research. There were several funding cycles a year where nobody would apply, which was always sad. There's money out there, if you know where to look!
Also look at professional organizations in your field. Many offer financial assistance to graduate students through grants or fellowships. When you are applying for a grant, make sure to include publishing expenses in your cost breakdown!! This is something that so many people forget to do. And don't just look at the biggest, national/international organizations in your field. There are probably smaller regional organizations that offer funding as well, and they probably aren't as competitive as those national ones.
A pro tip from me is to think outside of the box in terms of what grants/fellowships you apply to. For example, my research focus is the historical archaeology of caves in the southeast US. So I can apply to grants for research in archaeology, caves, history, historical archaeology, cave archaeology, cave history, southeast American history, southeast American archaeology, etc. Look at your research topic and make a list of all of the different umbrellas it can fit under. Then search for organizations that are related to those projects. You might be surprised by what's out there! And if you're unsure if you research topic fits into the scope of a program, it never hurts to send the coordinator a quick email.
Another option is to carefully consider what journals you submit to. A highly prestigious journal is likely to have higher fees than a less prestigious one. As long as your article is peer reviewed, the prestige of a journal is not as important as you might think (The only time is might be important is if you're trying to get tenure).
If you take nothing else from this post, take this: do not self reject! Imposter syndrome is real, and you might feel that you don't deserve funding. That's the devil talking. You, my friend, are an academic badass. Your research is awesome, you're awesome, and you deserve to share your awesomeness with the world. So apply to that grant, even if you don't think you'll get it. You might be surprised.

The reason why academics do not tend to publish open-access is largely not that they perceive it as "less prestigious", it's that they are being charged four digit numbers to make a paper open-access (APCs/ Article Processing Charges), both in conventional journals and in fully open-access ones. Like, either their limited research funds have to allow paying APCs, or they have to use their own income. While open-access journals without APCs do generally exist, they do absolutely not exist in every area of research. Many researchers still do their best to get their work out there for free – I've never met a single author who disapproves of platforms like sci-hub, or who refuses to e-mail you their own manuscript free of charge if you ask them to.
The peer review system is not viewed unfavourably because it's a "drag on their real job", it's viewed unfavourably because it's unpaid labour even though publishers could very well afford to pay people to review papers. It's a hugely exploitative system, and it does not even work properly. Significant errors are routinely missed because scientists get sent review requests for papers that are only tangentially related to their own area of expertise, so they would have to spend a lot of time on research to actually find errors, which is just not feasible if you're already overworked and asked to do unpaid volunteer labour. And many peer review processes are not even double-blinded, leading to biases on top of that.
Like, I just don't think you can make individuals working in exploitative systems responsible for their own exploitation just because they didn't unionise hard enough or whatever. If you don't make individual teachers responsible for systemic flaws in the education system, don't make researchers responsible for the power of publishers. If you don't expect retail workers to risk being fired for speaking up about their moral and political views, don't expect academics to do that, either. Like, the Jewish chief editor of eLife was fired for tweeting a link to the "Dying Gazans Criticized for Not Using Last Words to Condemn Hamas" Onion article. For every other field of work, consensus in leftist circles is 100% "aww no, nobody can fault you for trying to survive under capitalism, you are not a bad person for not wanting to get fired. Individual action cannot be expected to fix systematic injustice, the problem is The System and People In Power, not you", but somehow, academics can be held fully responsible for working in a deeply broken system.
i'm always a bit unsettled by disdain for intellectual or creative labor in leftist spaces. there's this commonly held belief that academics are a bunch of rich old white men, rather than a wide variety of people who are barely getting by. most lecturers in universities are adjuncts living paycheck to paycheck. authors make very little money as a general rule. most researchers are overworked and underpaid. and yet there's still this idea that academics are overcompensated to sit around and smoke cigars together while making shit up

Yes, it is definitely ok to ask an academic to send you one of their articles if you have trouble accessing it, and such requests are often appreciated! We want our work to be read and to have an impact, and the money from the paywalls many articles are behind goes to the publishers - we don't earn anything from it.
(Paywalled academic publishing is such a grift. The income of academics generally comes from the universities and other research institutions we work at, as well as from grants obtained for research projects. Much of this money ultimately comes from the public. When we publish our research with an academic publisher, the publisher does not pay for it, sometimes the academic even has to pay to cover the publication costs. Before the work is published, the publisher gets other academics to peer-review it, and the publisher doesn't pay these reviewers either. Then, when the work is published, the publisher puts it behind a paywall. The universities/other research institutions, the grant bodies, the members of the public etc., who actually fund this research, then have to pay the publisher to access it. And academics have long gone along with this as publishing in a prestigious journal has been key to career advancement, and the prestigious journals have been paywalled. Thankfully, there is now a move towards open acess publishing in academia, for instance with many funding bodies requiring that the research they fund is open access, but there is still way too much that is published behind paywalls. In other words, academics have nothing to gain from their work being behind these paywalls and most hate them at least as much as you do.)

How can I Assess the Credibility of an Academic Journal Article?
Determining if an article is published in a reputable academic journal involves several steps:
Check the Journal's Reputation
Assess Peer Review Process
Indexing and Impact Factor
Editorial Board
Journal Policies and Standards
Publication Frequency and Consistency
Evaluate the Content
Tumblr media
Check the Journal's Reputation:
Look for well-known publishers or scholarly societies. Reputable journals are often associated with established publishers like Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, etc. Additionally, journals affiliated with prestigious academic institutions or professional organizations tend to have higher credibility.
Assess Peer Review Process:
Reputable journals typically undergo a rigorous peer-review process where submissions are evaluated by experts in the field(Engineering field, Management field). Check the journal's website to understand their peer-review policy. Journals that have a double-blind peer review process, where both the reviewers and the authors are anonymous to each other, often hold higher credibility.
Indexing and Impact Factor:
Check if the journal is indexed in well-known databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, or Ebsco. High impact factor journals are generally considered reputable, but keep in mind that impact factor varies by field and should not be the sole determinant of a journal's quality.
Editorial Board:
Reputable journals typically have an esteemed editorial board comprised of experts in the field. Check the journal's website to see if the editorial board members are prominent scholars in the relevant field.
Journal Policies and Standards:
Look for clear editorial policies, ethical guidelines, and standards for publication on the journal's website. Reputable journals adhere to strict ethical standards, such as guidelines provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Publication Frequency and Consistency:
Consider the publication frequency and consistency of the journal. Reputable journals usually have a regular publishing schedule and maintain consistency in the quality of their content.
Evaluate the Content:
Finally, evaluate the content of the article itself. Reputable academic journals publish articles that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their respective fields, adhere to academic standards, and cite credible sources.
By considering these factors, you can assess whether an article is published in a reputable academic journal.
