#that takes focus and its not a guaranteed success on stronger enemies

Curbing frustrations due to stopping smoking, *I am constantly reminding myself to be a decent human being, and be decent to others. Its been a while since I stopped smoking. But this is the first time I did so willingly.

I had my heart broke. A close friend of mine turned out to be an enemy. Someone who didn't believe in me from the beginning, lied to my face countless times that I am just finding out about, and told others bad things about me. All I can do, and all I could ever do, however, us just accept this distrust, because that is the person that they want to be and I cant change that. I can only just keep being myself, wishing good for everyone and understand what it is that makes me tick, and focus on my needs. I spent a year and a half doting on that person, taking care of them, bringing them gifts, and trying to make them smile when most of what they did was talk bad about me behind my back, lie to me, and prove to me that they don't respect me, don't care about me, and they are stuck in a childish mindset.

Honestly early drug use in young teens prevents their brain from developing. So perhaps that's the case. You're a lost boy from neverland. And If you want to grow up and stop acting spoiled and entitled, and super selfish, you'll have to try harder than everyone else. But small steps first starting out.

Spirit told me not to burn my bridge with you. That you will grow up, that you will learn, but only after you lose your entire family, people disown you because of your cowardly negligence, and you lose everything. I don't keep liars as friends. And I should have been more careful. They say love is blind. But only the ancients understood it fully. This is why I still love you. I see you for you, and not what everyone else sees. Let me explain.

There are many forms of a persons soul. Spirit, soul, essence, and physical outer spirit, what you show everyone else, are all radically different things.

To help explain this a little bit I borrowed the following list from Wikipedia, which does a fair job at explaining most things. However, there was an exceptional volume written by one of my favorite authors so far, in the early 1800's - and his name unfortunately escapes me. He was a scholar, professor, archeologist, and preserver of ancient history. He had traveled to many many sites from ancient cultures, mainly Egypt, and it is because of his work as a linguist that we were able to get this list together to help others understand there is more to a person than just their spirit and their soul.

So, each one of these is its own separate element that makes up a person. And in this book from the 1800's, the one that escapes my memory - he goes into each of these, and If I am remembering correctly, this is not an exhaustive list; there are more elements to a person. But he goes into each one and breaks it down. I can do my best to explain these, but I feel like I wouldn't do half as much as a good job.

But when I look at a person, I don't know if it is my vision, but I don't see someone's KHET. I see their "ihb", Thier "Shut", and their "Ka."

But that is because as someone who was constantly bullied in my life, by all types of people, beautiful people, ugly people, faking nice people ... I don't look at the way that they dress, or how skinny they are. That is the least important part of a person. The most important part of a person is the part that they show to no one when no one else is there, how they interact with strangers, and how they interact with animals and their environment. Spencer might have broken my trust, but I see his KA, I've always seen it. And his Ka is beautiful, RARE, and so strong. He asked me what I see in him. Many people have asked me what I see in him. He has broken BA, and a very interesting Sekhem. He hates his own Ren as much as I do, and opened up to me as to why. And I know he wasn't lying about that. I enjoy his company because I see who he wants to be. And I see his Shut, (shu*ot) or his shadow. But behind every Shut, there is a light side. And he has the capability to become one of the most successful and influential people I know. He has endless potential which he hasn't even scratched the surface with, and he can change so many peoples entire lives, and doesn't even know it yet. I love his Sah, which isn't easy to explain to someone who has never heard these terms before.

And without which is why I see lots of growth needed for him to do. And he'll get there. It might take him 20 years to stop being afraid of himself, and I say that with so much love. Afraid, not calling him a coward, he is very brave, but he runs away in fear of getting hurt, and in fear of people letting him down, like so many people have done so many times in the past. Your Ka is beautiful. One of the most rare and strongest I have ever seen. As shocking of a presence as being very tall. Someone with a beautiful Ka will always influence others. Always draw attention. They are so rare and unique of a person that instantly others are attracted to them. Instantly they get noticed.

You know what is cute? Someone so tall trying to be invisible. ^-^

They are able to be someone that others depend on, feel safe around, and look up to. People want to be around others with a Ka like that. Always. Even when you're feeling blue. Because when that Ka feels better, when its not sad, when you get out of your comfort zone, set a goal for yourself and get it done, the sun comes out of the darkness. And that Ka starts emanating happiness. People with strong Ka's are like superweapons. They can be the back bone of families. Someone who everyone loves and cherishes. I don't think they know it, but that Ka is the most beautiful part of someone. And it drives me insane to think that he doesn't even know his own worth!

I forgive you for lying to me. I don't accept it, lying isn't good. But I understand why you did it. They were selfish reasons, and I don't use the word selfish in a negative way. Selfish in the fact that you were just looking for a way to get what you wanted, to make yourself happy. So you could have fun, enjoy the day, and smile like you do sometimes.

But you are still a child when it fully understands what it is that makes a person happy. And that's not your fault. You never learned the secret. No one told you because it doesn't exist in your family. It doesn't really even exist in mine, its something that I had to figure out and struggle through myself growing up, and dedicating 15 years to bettering myself and doing everything I could to become the best version of myself;

In order to be happy with the decisions that you make, in order to feel comfortable with you decisions and be proud of yourself, you have to know yourself. When we spend so much time hiding and looping pain around in our heads we spiral down into a circle that never ends. This leads to depression, drug abuse, alcoholism, lying to your friends, lying to your family, and lying to yourself. You'll look in the mirror and not know/not like who you are. To not know yourself.

Take time to practice healthy practices for you. Become an adult. Become who you want to be. You say you wished she'd come out of the blue and make you be someone who you wished you were: Someone confident. Someone happy. You wished you were okay. You said that she'd come into your life and make you stop drinking, stop doing all the drugs.

Be careful what you wish for, Giant. She came into your life. She adored you. She tried to show you how to love. You pushed her away, thwarted her efforts to help you, shamed her, disrespected her, hurt her feelings, tore her soul, made her spend entire nights crying over you and your decisions. She just wanted to trust you. And you broke that trust. YOU destroyed your relationship with select few who really were expecting great things from you.

Because you still need to learn. You still need to try. There is a point, and it is possible. Everything that you want, you can achieve. The only person who is stopping it is yourself. Grow up.

I see your pain. You can't understand that because you can't empathize with others like I can. I know your heartbreak. I can say that because I have a very big heart.

But seriously, grow up. Set a goal. Get it done. You're sitting and rotting in your own filth and its no ones fault but yours. You can blame anyone you want to. Anyone. I can think of seven people you'd probably blame instead of yourself.

Take responsibility for your actions. This is a part of growing up. Accept that you made a mistake. Say your sorry, and try again. When you do something wrong, admit it. When you go out of your way to hurt someone, tell yourself that it is bad. Be a god damn decent human being and the world will be yours. Stop living like a pathetic thief. You're better than that. You're stronger than that. I see your Ka, and I believe in you. Seriously, stop your shit. Just stop. This is bigger than your deep seeded sadness. This is about the rest of your life.

I can't force you to change. You'll either change, or stay the same miserable self you are and end up being hated and shamed by everyone in your family. But its up to you. Its only up to you. She came into your life. You got what you wished for. You had the lock, and she had the key. But you have to be the one that turns the key and opens the door to your own success and future. Sometimes you have to help yourself. Sometimes you have to do things for yourself.

I know you can do it. I believe in you. But it doesn't matter what I say or think, or how I feel. You'll never see it that way, unless you grow up and get your head out of your ass. <3 Be a man, know yourself. Learn what it is that makes you tick. Stop the drugs. They're just a guaranteed trip to self sabotage and unhappiness. Seriously dude, you're going the wrong way on that, and I CAN SEE. So I'm giving you a heads up. It doesn't make you feel better

STOP LYING. Mostly stop lying to yourself. Drugs don't solve anything. What do they make you do? Well, they mess up your kidneys, which always hurt and only feel better when you apply pressure to them. You're rotting your kidneys. You've only got two, and a rare blood type, so the more you drink and the more you do drugs, the higher your creatinine level will be and it becomes like a cutter. You are injuring yourself to the point of self harm. And you do it deliberately to TAKE THE PAIN AWAY.

I know this because I can see your spirit. And there were so many conversations that we have had. So many that I know you don't remember. And after finding out how much you lie, I can't believe all of it anymore. I can't trust you. YOU DID THAT. No one else. And it sucks, but even behind all the lies, the Ka was still there. I could feel your actual hurt as my own, so those 5am talks we had, all those conversations, and the times that you were there for me, weather you were to blind to know that you were there for me and if you even realized it or not, I just want to say thank you.

Thank you for pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and hanging around me sometimes. Thank you for sitting with me on the couch, while I cried because my soul hurt and the world didn't make sense. Thank you for showing me what a kind person and loving friend you actually really are, even if it is hidden under layers and layers of pain and guilt and self loathing. Thank you for letting me get to know a little bit of you, and thank you for making me smile when you know I didn't feel good. Thank you for making me laugh when things were getting too serious. Thank you for sharing your joy with me in my life. You don't know how many times you made me feel better just by being able to forget about all the worlds problems and sing in the car. Thank you for saying things without saying them, and showing me that you are so genuine and unique, there really isn't anyone like you in this world. You are super special, and you've literally saved my life the night you let me come into your room and sit there and watch the fishes. You don't know how much pain I was in. And you were there for me. You helped me not end my life that night. I only walked away with a couple scars. YOU HELPED ME. YOU did. Just by letting me in. We didn't talk. I couldn't. I was crying too much and my Ba and Ka were in absolute shambles. You didn't do anything except be in the right place at the right time, but your energy, as confused as it was at that time, helped me know that I wasn't the only one alone and suffering. And it was okay. and YOU had given me another reason to keep breathing. You'll never know how much you mean to me. Thank you for what you have helped me though.

I hope you can learn and know the Wisdom, not knowledge, that you can do anything you set your mind to, if you want to. I have proved to myself and to you, that you are the only one that is making your life miserable. I have done everything for you. And unless it is served to you on a silver platter, you reject it. You are the only one stopping your life progress. And you've convinced and lied to yourself so much about it that somehow you actually believe it is true.

I wish you could see through my eyes.

Even better, I wish you the courage and strength it takes to change you life and want to succeed better. Because you have all the tools. Shit, I gave you EVERYTHING. The only excuse is yourself. You are what is stopping you.

Life goes on. We never forget them. But we have to live our lives. They forced themselves to be a memory. Force yourself to live. Go live out your own story. Stop lying to yourself. Your a fricking great person! You lie, sure. You manipulate, sure. But I see you! That isn't who you want to be and the time in your life right now is merely a stepping stone for all the endless things that are out there. There are layers of things that you don't understand. I'm not trying to be mean, but trust me when I say there's a lot out there.

Maybe someday we will meet again when you turn into an adult. Because right now I see you as a boy. There is so much out there to look forward to. There are SO many fun things out there in different cultures. You have a journey ahead of you, and I just wished that I could have been part of it with you.

I forgive you. You really really hurt me. And it absolutely is your fault and no one else. But at the end of the day, its You who has to live with who you are. And you can CHANGE and Grow. I have all ready seen the person you are 20 years from now. And you wouldn't believe it if I told you. Rv's, dual citizenship, backpacked across the grand canyon, visited MT St. Helen, been to Yellowstone 3 times, had lots of fun there with friends. Married, divorced. Someone who is comfortable in his own skin. Someone who doesn't feel the need to impress everyone, and who is happy. Someone who has become comfortable in his own skin. Someone who doesn't get offended by what other people think.

In 20 years I see you happy. I see you deciding you're a product of your environment and you wanted to change because everything is not set in stone. Its just what you knew. Past tense.

You can learn from your mistakes.

Just because you've never won the lottery, doesn't mean its not possible. People are winning the lottery all the time. There is hope. Just because you have never felt comfortable in your own skin doesn't mean that its not possible. It just means that you can experience it, and LIVE it, and KNOW it, for the first time, and for the rest of your life.

In 20 years you have more money than you know what to do with, and you have your own place, and like 3.5 cars, 2 that run 2 that don't. Projects. You have goals. You have your own family. You have your own life. People look up to you. You smile more. Your mouth doesn't hurt anymore because you stopped saying, "It doesn't matter." Instead you say things like, "Its possible."

But you have to try. And you have to keep trying.

But first you have to stop with the drinking and stop with the drugs, because you're literally hurting yourself and everyone around you, and you are going to be the only reason that you end up alone and unhappy. The truth hurts. Just like when I found out how much you really did lie to me, after I really didn't deserve it. I did everything I could to help you. I spent hours doing paperwork for you to help you get free dental, researching schools for GEDS, looking at loan and credit repair options, screening background checks to help you find out if you were really hung up locked out of states and not allowed to come back. You're actually not banned from Florida or Texas. There are no warrants out for your arrest by the way, because you never actually did anything super terrible. Otherwise you would have been thrown in jail instead of told to get the hell out of dodge.

There are people out in this world that really do care about you, and really want to see the best for you. But you have to want the best for yourself. You just want to be happy. I don't know how high or drunk you were when we had that conversation, but you just want to be you again. You just want to be happy again.

You can be. You have to do it though. I can't hold your hand like a little boy and do it for you. I tried. YOU were the reason that it didn't work. I did my part. YOU were the one that let yourself down. Literally all you had to do was to sign it. And I see this pattern with you.

Really, lets go ahead and break this down.

You are the cause of your own unhappiness.

Others can literally do EVERYTHING for YOU, and you come up with some kind of excuse and you LIE to YOURSELF, of why it won't happen. You do this to yourself. You are what they call, "A product of self fulfilling prophecies."

That's because you make it happen.

Your success: YOU make it happen.

Your failures: YOU make it happen.

Its really up to you to decide who you want to be. Not the other way around. Really. I'm not joking. I'm being honest. I'm not lying.

You can do it.

But you have to want it.

And you don't have to be alone.

And as shitty as you have treated me, and as terrible as a human you've been to me, doesn't make it ok. That was a really really mean, unnecessary and childish thing you did, for the past year and a half. Manipulating me like you did.

It still hurts because I trusted you, and you shit on me. YOU did that. That was YOUR choice.

But its MY choice to give you a heads up and let you know what you've been wanting to know this whole time, You are the way to your future. If you want to be miserable for the rest of your life, I cannot stop you. If you want to be treated like a little boy, who lies, and who is mean for the rest of your life, I cannot stop you. You are the only one who can change you.

Your entire future and happiness is up to you.

Choose your attitude. Choose your future. Choose to be someone you can be proud of. For once, stop lying to yourself. Its stupid.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light review: that which died so that Bravely Default could live

Ah, Bravely Default, Square Enix’s unexpected, but pleasant, little gift to the 3DS, an RPG meant to be a throwback to the days of the SNES, about a bunch of dorks bumbling their way into saving the world. With its great characters, fantastic music, downright gorgeous art design, and innovative battle system, it, and its sequel, Bravely Second, make for some of the best RPGs on the 3DS. I’m not here to talk about those, though, at least not quite yet. I’m here to talk about the Final Fantasy spinoff on the original DS that inspired them. This is Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, itself a throwback to older RPGs, and easily one of the most obscure spinoffs in the series. Does it measure up to the standards of its spiritual successors?

Short answer, no. But since nobody reads these for the short answers, buckle in your seat belts, because this’ll be a ride.

Story:

The game follows 4 teenagers from the kingdom of Horne: Brandt, Jusqua, Yunita, and Aire, who, after defeating the local witch, Louhi, who kidnapped Aire, the kingdom’s princess, are branded to be the Heroes of Light by the planet’s guardian, the Crystal, who warns them of a darkness that threatens to destroy the world. Upon returning to their home, they find all its inhabitants turned to stone by the curse of the witch. Unfortunately, the Crystal could not have picked a worse group of people to task with saving the world. Brandt is an insecure idiot who blindly dashes ahead to try to become stronger, Jusqua is a lazy jerk adverse to putting in effort, even when it’s a good cause, Aire is a greedy spoiled brat of a princess concerned mostly with keeping herself well off, regardless of the consequences to other people, and Yunita is a knight with severe self esteem issues, which wouldn’t be too damaging on its own... if not for her companions treating her awfully and ditching her at the drop of a hat. Needless to say, these are not attractive qualities in a hero, and they split up immediately after discovering what happened to their home, and while Brandt and Yunita do try to find a solution to their home’s predicament, with Jusqua and Aire essentially giving up and taking refuge in a different town, most of the plot boils down to them wandering around trying to fix problems they themselves caused, while trying to fix the problems of all the towns they come across, swapping between themselves in parties of two, and picking up and dropping guest party members. It gets more than a bit frustrating after a while, and feels quite aimless, until things get a lot more interesting once they reunite in the floating city of Spelvia.

Major game spoilers from this point on, just as a warning

The city of Spelvia is home to the original hero of light, Rolan, who saved the world three hundred years before with the help of his dragon companion. After doing so, his father, the chief of the town Invidia, ordered him to create an empire in Spelvia. His dragon having died in the battle against the darkness, and left alone to create his empire, Rolan became filled with bitterness and resentment, refusing to help the new heroes despite being the only hope to save Horne. The heroes try to help him by freeing his soul of his darkness... only to, as usual, completely mess up and cause the darkness to cover the entire world, somehow causing time to roll back to 15 years in the past. As it turns out, however, this was the best thing possible, as the troubles of the various kingdoms, including Rolan’s own darkness. are revealed to be the work of 7 demons, Asmodeus, Belphegor, Leviathan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Mammon, and Satan. After defeating them all, they traverse to the source of the darkness and destroy the mastermind behind it all, Chaos (this definitely isn’t familiar at all, huh).

While the plot definitely has interesting ideas and cool moments, it’s still not a great success. The plot for the first half of the game is rather thin and meandering, and the characters just aren’t memorable, with the lack of interaction between the main cast being one of the biggest flaws. Still, it’s an interesting effort, if nothing else.

Gameplay:

The 4 Heroes of Light is uses a turn based battle system that is somewhat reminiscent of its spiritual successor, Bravely Default, though still quite different. The main similarity is the use of AP. All your party members have a max of 5 AP they can store. One is given automatically every turn, and choosing to defend will give an extra one. AP is used for everything, from using abilities, to casting magic, to simply attacking, to the point there isn’t even MP. The stronger the abilities, the more AP they take to use, with high level spells using 4, and the most advanced abilities using 4 or 5. However, compared to Bravely Default, there’s a few major problems with this system. While not having to worry about having to keep your MP up seems nice, the trade off of having to use more AP for stronger abilities is actually rather damaging. If you, say, wanted to attack with Firaga, you’d need to defend twice just to build up enough AP to cast it once, essentially only being able to go once every three turns, which isn’t very efficient, especially when high level spells like that are one of your only methods for hitting multiple enemies, not to mention the problems healers face.

While using a lower level spell may seem like the obvious solution, it’s not that simple. TFHOL (I cannot type out that whole name everytime) uses a customizable ability system where, in addition to the basic three commands of attacking, defending, and using items, you have 6 free ability slots that can be filled with either job abilities, of which there are 4 each, and magic, which anyone can freely use. While this may sound fine and dandy, it’s actually a pretty restrictive number. Even aside from the job abilities, most of which are quite valuable, the sheer amount of spells available means a lot of spreading them out between your party members, who will likely be less effective at magic than others, and have duties to focus on besides magic. Even worse, in a move I can only call utterly baffling, there is no way to manually target in battle. Physical moves always hit the enemy in front, to the right, and magical attacks always hit the enemy in back, to the left, while healing and other support magic just goes to whoever the computer thinks needs it from a pure numbers standpoint. This can result in your meathead healing your paladin at low health for piddly amounts, while your dedicated healer heals your bard that already got off all their buffs off just because they now had a bit less HP, not to mention a dangerous enemy remaining in battle longer than you’d like just cause they’re in a spot that the auto target refuses to go for. There is absolutely no reason they couldn’t put in manual targeting. Aside from magic specifically, though, the ability system is flawed in how utterly restricted you are without it. For instance, the simple ability to run from battles, one of the most basic things in an RPG, is restricted to one specific job, one that’s rather poor offensively, to boot. Yes, if you get into a random encounter without said job, you’re forced to fight it, no way around it.

As mentioned many times, this game uses a system where your different characters can switch between various jobs. These range from the traditional white and black mages, the dedicated healers and offensive magic users, to bards and musicians, with job abilities to provide buffs to the party, to the more traditionally offensive rangers and bandits, to some very.... weird ones, such as the Salve-Maker, dedicated to enhancing the effects of items, to the elementalist, which manipulates elemental effectiveness and resistance, to, all things, the party host, which relies on psyching the party up, making them more effective in battle. They can get pretty creative, and they all have some kind of use in battle, regardless of how far in the game you are. They also all have passive abilities, such as the black and white mage reducing the amount of AP needed to use their respective types of magic by one, along with different stats that determine their effectiveness at certain things, such as using different weapons. The progression on getting them, however, is pretty slow. Other than the default freelancer, at first you’re only given the wayfarer, the aforementioned job able to run from battles, once you first assemble your full party, and afterwards, you unlock two jobs per city story arc, and while it’s not too awful a pace, it still takes a while before you’re given some kind of variety, though there’s a few that can only be gotten through minigames as well. This is only worsened by your party permanently being halved for half the game, or in some cases only being given 1 person to control. This limits your options even further. Trying to use more supportive jobs such as the bard can put all the pressure on your other party member, not to mention it’s a downer in general, having your creativity limited so.

Aside from the basic EXP leveling gained from defeating enemies, jobs can level up through gems dropped by enemies, unlocking new abilities. While fine in concept, in execution, it’s not well balanced at all. There’s 8 different types of gems, all of which are eventually needed to level up, and you need very specific amounts of each to level the jobs up. Additionally, gems are also your main source of currency for a while, since enemies don’t drop money, forcing you to balance saving them for strengthening your jobs, and being able to buy at least a few things. Gems aren’t guaranteed drops, and they can only drop a max of 4 per battle normally anyway, making it even grindier. Worst of all, the final type, the diamonds, are only dropped by bosses, which are obviously finite, with the exception of the respawning bosses in the bonus dungeons, which have their own problems, which I’ll get to in a bit. In the end, it’s just an unnecessary complication compared to enemies giving JP to level up your jobs like in Bravely Default.

No beating around the bush, this is a difficult game, and not for all the right reasons. Combined with the aforementioned difficulties such as no manual targeting, the encounter rate is pretty high, with enemies more than happy to wreck your day, and the game tries to do everything it can to spite you further. For instance, the inventory system works by each of your party members a limited amount of space to hold items. To equip equipment and spells, though, you need to physically keep them in said character’s inventory, which takes up quite a bit of space, and there’s no item stacking either; you want to have potions on hand, every potion you take is another space lost. While it generally doesn’t cause too many problems, from my experience, it’s still a pretty irritating wrinkle, especially when enemies can drop tons of items. Another, much more frustrating example, comes once you transition into the second half of the game, once the party reunites. The random encounters actually start scaling to your level, essentially meaning that your levels become meaningless. This is another detail that’s downright baffling to me, especially when them scaling means they give out more and more EXP as you level up, meaning you’ll hit the level cap pretty easily, and with barely anything to show for it. The bosses can also be huge roadblocks, especially the 7 demons, with special shout outs to Asmodeus, who has an attack that hits the whole party and has a chance of inflicting every status ailment in the game on your party members, including ones like stone, which pretty much kill them outright. Still, the bosses are also the highlight of the game, when they’re not making you pull your hair out.

You’re also restricted to saving at save points, which can be pretty annoying with how long and labyrinthine the later dungeons can get, especially with the final dungeon’s save point only being halfway through. You’re not even allowed to save on the world map. On that subject, the world map is extremely small and barren. While the early parts of the game sort of hide it with their extreme linearity, once you’re given free reign, and a dragon to ride, it quickly becomes apparent just how little there even is, with only a few optional locations, most of which are the bonus dungeons, which sane players are better off skipping. They’re 4 giant towers that go on for 100 floors, containing loads of random encounters, several bosses, and random equipment, and even jobs from the very last bosses. The problem is, everything except every 10th floor is a regular floor where you just have to find the exit, the problem being they get so utterly massive towards the end it can take half an hour to find the exit, not helped by the constant random encounters. Even with the rewards they offer, there is no word to describe them other than exhausting, and they’re easily some of the most miserable challenges I’ve gone through in a game. Even worse, you’re expected to farm these for gems and a special item that can upgrade your equipment. It’s a waste of time and sanity.

Overall, while the gameplay is a homage to older RPGs, it mainly captures the worst aspects of them instead. I’ve played many RPGs, and none have frustrated me anywhere near as much as this game.

Graphics:

The graphics of TFHOL are actually quite good. It was meant to have the feel of a popup book, and as a result, it has a bright and colorful feel to it.

It also has some pretty inventive location concepts, especially the final dungeon, the Star Chamber.

The biggest highlight to me, however, is the enemy designs, especially the 7 demons and Chaos. They tend to look inventive and distinct, and was even carried into Bravely Default, where it works even better.

Sound:

The music is simply fantastic in this game. It’s all in chiptune, and it works extremely well, even if it sounds a bit funny at first. From the blood pumping boss themes, to the creepy cave and dungeon themes, to quite a few that sound downright beautiful, like the dragon’s theme and Spelvia’s theme, being in chiptune does nothing to harm it. It also gets points for including night versions of every town theme, which sound beautiful in their own right.

Overall:

This is a game that does quite a few things right. The graphics, the music, even the story and the more climatic boss fights all work great. The base gameplay, however, is nothing short of a mess. I downright hated this game when I beat it, and while I’m not quite as emotional over it now, it’s still a very solid heavily not recommended. However, it did lead to the creation of Bravely Default, and for that, it deserves to be acknowledged. Till next time.

How To Play Pokemon Go – Tips & Trick

Hello, Hacks University followers. Today we’re doing a beginners guide on How To play Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go Guide.

1. What’s the point of Pokemon Go?

Pokemon go is a free augmented reality mobile game on iOS and Android where the main goal was to catch Pokemon in your neighborhood. For now, only the Pokemon from generation 1 are available to catch, however, what’s available for players to catch is dependent upon their location. While catching Pokemon is the main focus, there are other goals as well such as visiting pokestops and gyms, strengthening and evolving your Pokemon and hatching eggs.

2. How do I find Pokemon?

Pokemon can be found in a variety of places, as long as the Pokemon Go app is open. Pokemon will appear on the game’s GPS map and your phone will buzz to indicate when a new one is nearby. If you want to catch it, simply tap the Pokemon to initiate the capture phase. It is also possible to use the item Insense to temporarily increase the chances of a Pokemon appearing while walking, or alternatively, you can install a lower module a ta Poke stop by tapping the blank area above the landmark emblem. This will temporarily lure Pokemon to that poke stop and not just for you, but other Pokemon trainers too! As for fighting new Pokemon outside your immediate area, well, you’re gonna have to get out there and explore!

3. Is it possible to find specific Pokemon?

That’s a tough one! So as we’ve already mentioned the types of Pokemon you can find change depending on the region. But if you’re looking for a specific Pokemon in your area, there is a nearby Pokemon icon in the bottom right corner of the map that will show up to 9 Pokemon that are close, along with footstep symbols, which display how close you are to that Pokemon. Three steps means it’s within a kilometer, two steps a hundred meters, one step means it’s within just 10 meters. And no steps means you will encounter it soon. If you want to find a specific Pokemon, tap its icon to highlight it. this will change the nearby Pokemon icon to that particular Pokemon and it’s footsteps, making it slightly easier to pinpoint as you roam around. The map will also show shaking grass at times which indicates a Pokemon should be around that area though it’s not always a guarantee.

4. How do I catch Pokemon

Unlike traditional Pokemon battles, you don’t actually fight the wild Pokemon in Go. Instead, you just throw pokeballs until one actually hits the Pokemon and captures it but an only counts if it hits the Pokemon first before it touches the ground. Now during battle, a circle will appear around the Pokemon that comes in three colors; green, orange and red which respectively represent; easy, medium and hard catches. This dictates how likely a Pokemon is to break out of a pokeball and if a more difficult Pokemon escapes several balls in a row, it might run away.

Fortunately, there are several items that can help better the odds of a successful capture such as Great and Ultra Balls, as well as Razz Berries that can be fed to the Pokemon to make the next pokeball thrown have a higher chance of capture. The colored circles serve another purpose though; it’s not just capturing the Pokemon that matters but how well you time the throw. So normally each capture nets you 100 XP by default, though you’ll get a 500 XP bonus if it’s a new pokemon. But you can increase that XP count even more the closer that colored circle is to the center of the stationary white one at the time of capture: so you’ll receive a nice bonus of 10 XP if it’s close, a great bonus of 50 XP if it’s even closer, and an excellent bonus of a hundred XP if it’s dead center.

And if that’s not enough, you can net another minor bonus of 10 XP if you catch the Pokemon with a curveball, which you can do by shaking the pokeball until it sparkles and then immediately flicking it. You can also double the XP you receive if a lucky egg item is used and in effect.

5. So I have some Pokemon, what next?

Well you can evolve them to start! Besides experience points catching a Pokemon will always net the player 100 Stardust and three candies for that specific pokemon’s evolutionary chain. These items are required to make your Pokemon stronger, increase HP, and eventually evolve. Both of which increase their combat power, or CP for short, and the higher the CP, the stronger the Pokemon. But there is a bit more to it, namely in relation to the Stardust.

When you look at your Pokemon CP you will see an arc that a white line is filling in, this is the pokemons potential and it is broken up by percentages. Every 20% the amount of Stardust needed to increase the pokemons power will increase as well. the first 20% is 200 Stardust 21% to 40% is 400 Stardust, and so on until the maximum of 1000 Stardust. However even if you have the right amount of Stardust, you won’t be able to increase your Pokemon CP past a certain percentage, until your trainer level is high enough. The higher the level, the farther you can push its power on the scale.

While one piece of candy is used for each power increase, the candies are mainly used to evolve Pokemon. Different Pokemon requires different amounts of candy to evolve, but it’s usually either 12, 25, 50 or 100. The lone exception is Magicarp which requires 400 of its candies to evolve. Evolution will increase the pokemons CP but it will not affect the CP scale percentage. Whatever it was at before evolution is where it will stay afterward. CP is used exclusively at gyms which is the only place battles can occur.

6. What does leveling up do?

While Pokemon gains CP, trainers gain Levels. Those levels mark when certain things become available. The best example is you can’t claim gems until you have reached level 5. But this level also marks when new items become available such as potions and revives, both of which are necessary now that battles can take place. Each level will give the player more of these items as well as allow you to further increase the power of your Pokemon

7. What are Pokemon Gyms?

In short, Pokemon gyms are essentially control points for players to claim on behalf by assigning it a Pokemon. It’s here that battles take place and for earning currency. However, you can’t access gyms until you reach level 5. And once you access one for the first time, you can choose to pick one of three teams; team valor, mystic or instinct (aka teams; red, blue and yellow). Each has a leader and are represented by one of the legendary birds. Though, it mainly serves as a way for players to divide themselves into groups. Each group can attempt to claim a gym as their own which will net them Poke coins for use in the shop.

Coins and Gems:

The coins are earned based on the number of gems under your control though. Unfortunately, you can only earn ten coins per gym with a max of 10. This makes earning Poke coins rather tricky since it’s the only way to obtain them in-game. The other option is to purchase them with real-world money in the form of microtransactions. The shop holds all the items we mentioned before along with egg incubators, an upgrade to your bag to hold more items and a Pokemon storage upgrade to hold more Pokemon. Gems that are unclaimed or shown as silver, but if it’s any other color, it’s controlled by that team. To claim an empty gem, simply tap the icon on the left side of the screen to pick one of your Pokemon. That Pokemon will then defend the gym.

Now, when under a team’s control, the gym can gain levels in the form of prestige. Which you earn when the controlling team wins battles against challenges. Obtaining prestige will increase the gyms level and allow for more players from your team to place their Pokemon in the gym in an effort to better defend it. On the other hand, if you challenge a gym, you’re able to choose up to six Pokemon from your collection. Battles are incredibly simple, mainly consisting of the player tapping the screen to have their pokemon attack and swiping left or right to dodge enemy moves. Yeah, it may be simple, but dodging could really save your Pokemon!

Pokemon Attacks:

Now, every Pokemon has two attacks; their primary move and a special move that’s charged during battle which is automatically used as your next attack when ready. A Pokemon special attack can be different even within the same species. One Pidgey could have Aerial Ace while another has Air Cutter. However, winning a battle does not automatically make the gym yours, instead, it’ll lower its prestige points and it will remain in their possession until the prestige reaches zero. Now it is possible to challenge a Gym again right away in order to quickly accomplish this. Although, your pokemons damage does not recover. The only way to currently heal your Pokemon is by using potions or Revives. You can obtain them through Poke stops and leveling up your trainer. It’s also possible to battle against your own Gym in order to test their defenses, raise its prestige and earn XP. Of course the higher your Pokemon CP, the better chance it has in battle.

8. What are PokeStops?

PokeStops are places of interest near you where you can get free stuff! Who doesn’t like free stuff?! They can be buildings like churches, small local monuments or historical signs and even public art projects. They are marked by a blue landmark emblem that enlarges once you are within range. By tapping on it, you can see what the point of interest is and sometimes even get information about it. Swiping across the marker causes it to spin and drop random items like Pokeballs, Pokemon eggs, potions and Revives, as well as a small amount of experience points. After using a Pokestop, its color will change to purple to show that you used it. However, it only takes a few minutes for it to refresh, allowing you to continually get new items if you so choose.

9. What do I do with Pokemon Eggs?

When you receive a Pokemon egg you can look at it in the Pokemon screen under the egg tab. From here you can place it in your incubator which begins the process of hatching it. And powered by you walking. The distance is different for each egg and we’ve seen them range from 2 kilometers to 10 so far. Once you begin Pokemon Go, you will have an incubator right away that can be used an infinite number of times. It is possible to find or buy more but they have a limit of 3 uses.

Finally eggs will only hatch if the player is walking. Thanks to the GPS, Pokemon Go is able to determine your speed. So trying to cheat by riding in a car, train or plane won’t count toward the required distance. In addition, you have to open the app.

10. What Are Medals?

Medals are the achievements of Pokemon Go. They track how far you’ve walked, how many Pokemon you’ve caugh, and various other aspects. Each medal has a bronze, silver and gold requirement that gradually increases the number needed to earn that achievement. Upon earning a medal, you will also obtain some XP.

And that covers the basics of Pokemon Go. It’s not too difficult to learn once you’ve got the hang of it. It can be addicting in its own way. Spyro, Randomizers and Beam Saber.

So I do have a longer, researched piece in development but I need a bit more time for that. I want it to be as objective as I can because it’s the type of thing that brings emotions to the fore. Instead I am writing this rather more light-hearted piece out of topics that I doubt I can make a whole upload out of on their own.

  It’s another multiple topics in one piece, like that writing one I did before but this one will be about video games.

 If you’ve looked through my other stuff you will likely have noticed that I like video games. Modern games are like television or movies that you can interact with and for this reason are deserving of more respect than they currently get, so expect more uploads on the subject. Might actually be worth an upload to expand on this.

  So I have three topics at the moment and the first is about Spyro the Dragon (1998), more specifically the series on the original PlayStation. For those not in the know, Spyro is a very child-friendly game with cheerful music, bright colours and cartoony enemies and developed quite a following. You play as a dragon who is considered small even by the game’s standards. You can take three hits before having to resume from the last time the game was saved and you know how many hits you have taken by the appearance of Spyro’s dragonfly friend, Sparx, who changes colour as you take damage.

  Being a small, possibly underdeveloped, dragon, Spyro is forced to glide rather than fly, can breathe small flames and charge with his horns. As the games progress Spyro can pay to be taught more moves. This isn’t pointless information though, these abilities are used both to fight and to solve puzzles; Spyro isn’t a turn your brain off action game but a puzzle experience.

  So all in all Spyro is a cute, brain training game. So why am I writing about it? It had a remaster released in late 2018 after the success of the Crash Bandicoot remaster, and that had me playing the original games (I didn’t have access to the remaster) and I realised that Spyro is freaking terrifying.

  At the beginning at least, the enemies who you kind of have to kill are terrified of you. They run and they cower so Spyro is just running around murdering people. Sure, in the first game you might be able to justify it through the fact that I believe the enemies are magical creatures made purely to attack you so maybe it doesn’t count, but in order to recover from taking hits you need Sparx to eat butterflies, which you get from murdering the local wildlife who are just as scared as the enemies. In the second game though, the enemies might well be the local wildlife and are just as scared of Spyro as in the first game.

  So what else? Is that all I’m going to talk about? Nope. This occurred to me as I was playing the second game but as you enter a new “world” (I didn’t cover this, did I? Basically, there are a series of worlds that give access to more worlds) there will be a cutscene showing its inhabitants and a similar one when you leave, and these reveal some disturbing information about the inhabitants.

  Not only do the enemies show a callous or even sadistic disregard for life, but those that Spyro is working to save also show a light-hearted cruelty that is played for humour. Man-slaughter and torment are commonplace on all sides; Spyro’s murder-spree almost seems tame in comparison.

  I don’t want you to get me wrong though, the games are great. Even for children. The first game can be monotonous but the second one improves on it greatly. The reason why the enemies run and cower actually makes sense, particularly at the start: it gives the player a safe place to get used to playing the game with minimal danger. A slow start. And the dark humour? Well that’s common everywhere in human society. Jokes about death and harm are common and the games count on children not quite understanding what’s happened. This may not be ideal in children’s media, but it’s not too unusual and whether or not it is harmful is not a debate for here.

 So which of the two subjects do I want to continue with? I think the semi-“review” that I have planned will be easier to end things on so I’ll leave that for last.

  There is a certain type of game, I’m not sure if it has a name, but it kind of relies on discovering specific items to progress the story. The Legend of Zelda series is well-known for this: in the entry Wind Waker you need to approach a dungeon that has a strong wind blowing at you and in order to get close you need a specific item that allows you to approach it. This specific item is always at a specific place and it is the same in most of the games.

  The Metroid series is the same. You need a specific item (say, the Spider Ball which allows you to climb walls) from a certain place in order to get to another certain place (up a wall). So where am I going with this?

  Well someone figured out how to take these items and make them random; as in, they are not where they should be but are still needed. Naturally there are certain safeguards to make sure that you can actually complete the game but it adds an almost realism to a game you know well. An unpredictability.

  And it’s not just items either. The avatar you play as can be random, the colour of your clothes and even the dialogue spoken. These Randomizers (nice name; exactly what it says on the tin) give the player the choice of what is randomised and to what degree.

  So I guess the question is “What’s the point?”. Yeah, heaven knows I’m too intimidated to try it myself, but it takes an old game that you’ve played a score of times and makes it new. You’re playing the game you love, but not how you’ve played it before. On top of that, random dialogue can be hilarious. But, as with all things video games, someone inevitably took things up a level and combined two games with items randomly spread between the two.

  Even if you are not interested in playing these Randomizer games, maybe you’ll find them interesting enough to watch a few on YouTube.

 And finally, my semi-review. A few weeks back I was able to visit my friend and he was insistent that I put on his VR headset and play a game called Beam Saber. Using two remotes that detect movement you swing them like swords at targets that come towards you. Maybe I should have mentioned earlier but Beam Saber is what is called a rhythm game: music plays and you have to interact with the targets that the game shows you, and always to the rhythm of the song.

-you might remember an old game called “Guitar Hero”; that’s the same premise-

  Beam Saber has you swinging your arms as though you were using swords to hit the targets, hence the name Beam Saber.

-I don’t personally watch this guy’s videos, but he at least guarantees a certain quality-

  The thing about Beam Saber is that it is great fun. A lot of games that try to use motion controls like this are willing to let you wiggle the control unenthusiastically to get the same results, but Beam Saber encourages you to really put your all into it. You get better results for putting some umph into your swings while being punished for being too wild. It uses challenges, some of which are optional, to challenge you to measure and hone your movements.

  Co-ordination, motor skills, memory and more are tested and practiced as you play; quickly wiping off sweat to avoid flinging the remotes at your bud’s nose (he didn’t have wrist straps so I really had to focus on not throwing them) as you flail about like an enthusiastic madman to a roster of catchy songs. On top of this, play for long enough and you will be feeling the burn for days so you can hardly be accused of sitting around all day playing games.

  I would like to add here that people who are particularly weak like myself might benefit from this game. See, if you have weak muscle tone for whatever reason, exercising is particularly difficult; it is noted that dyspraxics are often quite weak (we’re clumsy so sports are not only unappealing but off-putting of exercise in general) and have to start any exercise menu at a lower level. Heck, in my attempt at getting stronger I am beginning with lying down and standing up again and again because I just can’t do push ups; that’s the sort of level I am talking about here. So having fun, with time just flying by, might be a good way to gain the minimum strength needed to really start working out.

-some of us have to make up for wasted time with the most basic of basics-

  And even if it isn’t enough for strength gain, it most definitely will help dyspraxics with motor skills, grip strength (but might be best with wrist straps), proprioception and all the other multitude of things we struggle with. On a similar note, video games are great for us who struggle with reactions and the above issues.

So in summary, Beam Saber is great fun and is has any number of benefits.

"In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate, Prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Mohammad, Your Majesties, Your Highnesses, Excellencies, President Donald Trump, Peace, God’s mercy and blessings be upon you. Let me start by thanking my brother, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its hospitality and graciously hosting this summit. Mr. President, Allow me to express my gratitude for taking this step to reach out to Muslim nations, and making it a priority on your first foreign tour as President of the United States. We meet today to advance an effective response to the serious threats facing our world. The future for all of us will be shaped by the actions as you pointed out we take now, and we all have to work in partnership in four key areas. Let me say a brief word about each: First and foremost, is the grave challenge of terrorism and extremism. Only a holistic approach can address the complex layers of the threat, from its evil ideas to its attack on prosperity and security. As you have mentioned, this demands coordinated and global action at every level. Success requires our mutual trust as well as our strength. The fight will not be won if we do not recognise our friends as our friends and our enemies as our enemies. Terrorist groups employ a false religious identity. Their aim is to mislead and polarise our societies and peoples. Let us state here, clearly: Terrorist groups do not inhabit the fringes of Islam they are altogether outside of Islam; they are khawarej, outlaws of Islam. Mr. President, A second and equally vital challenge is a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian cause, based on the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative. This can bring an end to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and guarantees peace for all Israelis, Arabs, and Muslims. No injustice has spread more bitter fruit than the absence of a Palestinian state. This is the core issue for our region, and it has driven radicalism and instability beyond our region and into the Muslim world. The international community has a direct interest in a just peace. The Arab and Muslim world has offered its full support for effective negotiations. And here, Sir, I would like to thank you for your determination to work towards bringing a settlement to this festering conflict. We will stand by you, Sir, in your efforts and work with you as partners. Third, safeguarding Jerusalem must be a priority. The Holy City is a strategic linchpin, vital to relationships among the three monotheistic faiths. Attempts to create new negotiating facts on the ground will have a catastrophic impact. All of us must engage in averting these dangers. To me personally, and to all Jordanians, the Hashemite Custodianship of Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian Holy Sites is an unbreakable, historical responsibility, and an honour to undertake on behalf of the Arab and Muslim nations. Mr. President, A fourth critical task is to sharpen public focus on the values that will protect and enrich humanity’s future: mutual respect, compassion, and acceptance. In the Muslim world, the voice of traditional, moderate Islam has been stronger in recent years. We need to continue to build on that. Twelve years ago we were proud to inaugurate the Amman Message, which among other outcomes has been an historic, global consensus by Muslim scholars agreeing who is a Muslim, forbidding Takfir, and explicitly recognising the validity of the eight Mathahibs of Islam. The Three Articles of the Amman Message expose the false claims of those who would exploit religion to divide us. As Allah says in the Holy Qur'an: In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate, "The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that haply ye may obtain mercy." [Al-Hujurat 49.10] Mr. President, There are nearly two billion Muslim men and women today, who enrich our world with their kindness, generosity, justice, civic family duty, and faith. Their lives express Islam’s teachings on acceptance, humility before God, compassion, and peaceful co-existence. Our future is based on deeds, Sir, not words. We are all accountable for our commitment to fight radicalisation in all its forms. We most of the time struggle during a negotiation, not really knowing the best way to handle the challenge.

Frustration is the main outcome when this happens

Here below is a nine minutes summary of some negotiation ultra actionable practices.

Chris Voss, the author, developed the methodologies and tools as part of his job as an FBI negotiator in charge of freeing hostages in the four corners of the world.

In the book, he shares some real stories about the challenges he and his teams faced in some crisis situations and transposes what he learned to our daily lives situations. Because life is negotiation.

Before starting with the tools, a few words about the mindset.

You should engage the process with a mindset of discovery. Great negotiators are able to question the assumptions that the rest of the involved players accept on faith or in arrogance, and thus remain more emotionally open to all possibilities, and more intellectually agile to a fluid situation.

Be a mirror

When a request or a proposition seems unreasonable, try not to oppose it head-on. Be a mirror instead. It’s just four simple steps.

Use the late-night FM DJ voice.

Start with “I’m sorry…”

Mirror (repeat the unreasonable request)

Silence. At least four seconds, to let the mirror work its magic on your counterpart.

Repeat.

When using this simple framework, the person you are disagreeing with will by herself come to a more reasonable request or proposal.

Don’t feel their pain, label it

Tactical empathy is understanding the feelings and mindset of another in the moment and also hearing what is behind those feelings so you increase your influence in all the moments that follow.

Labeling is a way of validating someone’s emotion by acknowledging it. Spotting their feelings, turning them into words, and then very calmly and respectfully repeating their emotions back to them.

The reason why a counterpart will not make an agreement with you are often more powerful than why they will make a deal, so focus first on clearing the barriers to agreement.

We all want to reinforce the positive, anyway it’s very important to first neutralize the negative. We have to start by clearing the road and build a safe place for negotiation. Labeling is the way to do it and it can be declined in several versions.

You can simply label your counterpart’s fears to diffuse their power (eg. “It seems you don’t want to take the risk of…”).

You can also start with an accusation audit and label all the terrible things your counterpart could say about you (eg. “It sounds like you think we are the bad guys rejecting all modifications in the contract”).

The main benefit of such an accusation audit is that you get rid of the negative dynamics very early in the negotiation process and, because the accusations often sound exaggerated when said alound, speaking them will encourage the other person to claim that quite the opposite is true (or, at least, make some neutral and depassionate space for the negotiation).

Beware “Yes” — Master “No”

“No” is the start of the negotiation, not the end of it.

“No” means “I am not yet ready to agree”, “You are making me feel uncomfortable”, “I do not understand”, “I dont’ think I can afford it”, “I want something else”, “I need more information” or “I want to talk it over with someone else”.

On top of that, there are three kinds of “Yes”: Counterfeit, Confirmation and Commitment.

A counterfeit “yes” is one your counterpart is using when she would like to say “no” but wants to take the escape route.

A confirmation “yes” is just a simple affirmation in response to a black-or-white question with no promise of action.

A commitment “yes” is the real deal. it’s a true ageement that leads to action.

“Yes” is the final goal of a negotiation, but don’t aim for it at the start. Saying “No” makes the speaker more secure, slows things down and protect people from making ineffective decisions.

So, next time, Start with NO in order to Get to YES.

Trigger the two words…

“That’s right”.

Combining listening, labeling, paraphrasing and summarizing what your counterpart says (and doesnt’say) is the right way to obtain a “That’s right!” from her.

“That’s right” is even stronger than “Yes” and can really close the deal.

Bend their reality

We don’t compromise because it’s right. We compromise because it’s easy and because it saves face. Most people in a negotiation are driven by fear or by the desire to avoid pain.

The rule here is: never split the difference.

Creative solutions are almost always preceded by some degree of risk, annoyance, confusion, and conflict. Accomodation and compromise produce none of that. You’ve got to embrace the hard stuff. That’s where the great deals are. And that’s what great negotiators do.

That said, the lever to operate here is the concept of loss aversion.

People wil take more risk to avoid a loss than to realize a gain. Make sure your counterpart sees there is something to lose by inaction.

The key method to bend your counterpart’s reality is anchoring.

You can anchor their emotions (prepare them for a loss) and anchor their starting point (set an extreme value).

By anchoring first, you will bend their reality toward yours.

Create the illusion of control

The idea here is to push your counterpart to suspend his unbelief.

Unbelief is the natural state and mindset of all parties when starting a negotiation. It’s the active resistance to what the other is saying, complete rejection.

The key here is to ask for help with calibrated questions. A calibrated can start with “how” and “what”, as these two words are the ones that more widely open the question. “Why” is also a possibility but can most of the time sound very accusative.”Who”, “where” and “when” usually provide short answers and do not start an open the discussion.

The power of calibrated questions is that they offer no target for attack like statements do.

Asking calibrated questions is asking for help. It will give your counterpart an illusion of control and will inspire them to speak at length, revealing important information.

Guarantee Execution

Once reaching an agreement, we have to be sure it will happen. Said differently, you have to avoid the counterfeit “yes”.

There are multiple ways of doing this through combination of the following methods, tools and tricks.

Use calibrated questions that start with “how”. “How” is about the execution of the deal.

Pay attention to the motivations of ALL people involved in the result of a negotiation, not only the ones who sit around the table. What are the interests of those who are “behind the table” ?

Follow the 7–38–55 rule. Only 7% of the message is based on words. The other 38% are based on the tone of voice and 55% on the body language.

Get your counterpart to reaffirm their agreement three times and avoid the counterfeit “yes”.

Detect if the person speaking has the power to decide. If she uses a lot of “I”, “me” and “my”, there is a chance she doesn’t. If she uses “we”, “they” and “them”, there is a high chance you are dealing with the decision maker.

Bargain Hard

No part of a negotiation induces more anxiety and unfocused agression than bargaining. Skilled bargainers see more than just opening offers, counteroffers, and closing moves. They see the psychological currents that run below the surface.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” — Sun Tzu, The Art of War

Yourself, and the negotiators you are facing have a specific style. And depending on the style, some specific tactics will better fit.

The Analyst is hyper sensitive to reciprocity and skeptical by nature. Silence is an opportunity to think for him. The risk, for him, is to cut himself from an essential source of data, his counterpart. Asking too many questions too early to him is not recommended as he will not answer them before gathering the data and understand all implications.

The Accommodator spends time building the relationship. He wants to remain “friend” with his counterpart. He is very easy to disagree with but it’s much harder to uncover his objections. He will have identified potential problems and will leave them unadressed by fear of conflict.

The Assertive believes time is money. He loves winning, even at the expense of others. He has an agressive communication style. Most of all, he wants to be heard and he has very few ability to listen. He tells rather than asks. Only when he is convinced you understand his point of view, he will be able to listen at yours. For him, silence is an opportunity to speak. With him, the most effective tools are mirror, labels, calibrated questions and summaries until you hear a “That’s right”.

Human beings tend to think themselves as being “normal”, and that the world will look the same to others than it looks to them. There is a high probabilty they are wrong. Considering other worldviews is a first step toward success in the negotiation.

Once you know who seats at the table, be prepared.

Know your target, or your target range, and prepare an Ackermann plan. It works as follow.

Set you first offer at 65% of the target and calculate three raises of decreasing increments (85%, 95% and 100%). Use different ways of saying “No” (eg. through “how” and “what” calibrated questions) and nonround numbers, like 3467, for your final offer to give credibility to the number. Plus add a nonmonetary item at the very end to show you are at your limit.

Be prepared to take a punch (receiving an initial offer that would anchor you very far from your target) and avoid the compromise trap by punching back (by showing real anger, using “why” questions or “I” messages to communicate your feelings).

Anyway, punching back is the last resort and de-escalating is the priority when you think you are the hostage of the situation. Asking for a break is definitely possible and even recommended.

Never forget that the person across the table is never the problem. The unsolved issue is. So focus on the issue.

Find the Black Swan

Negotiation breakthroughs are created by those who can identify and utilize Black Swans.

The concept of Black Swan has been popularized by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a famous risk analyst and author.

Basically, a black swan is an unknown unknown . Something that never happened ,that we do not expect, and that we even think is not possible according to our experience and knowledge.

As an example, the tsunami in Fukushima in 2011 is a black swan.

The black swan theory asserts that the past is of no use when predicting the future. There are events or pieces of knowledge that sit outside our regular expectations and therefore cannot be predicted.

This is a crucial concept in negotiation. We usually deal with known knowns and known unknowns. And now we have to add the unknown unknowns, the Black Swans.

In a negotiation, black swans are powerful leverages. They can either be positive leverages, negative leverages or normative leverages.

To cut a long story short, a black swan is a piece of information about your counterpart or the situation that will help you bend the negotiation toward your best interests.

To uncover unknown unknowns, the key is to collect as many data as possible about your counterpart through hearing, listening and observing. On top of that, if what your learn doesn’t fit any of the known models you have, or if the counterpart seems to be irational or act in a crazy way, avoid forcing it into an existing model because there is a high chance your would do a mistake doing so.

On the opposite, try to understand his worldview and the reason why he is behaving this way. The key answer lies there, sometimes well hidden.

There are many rational explanations. Your counterpart can either be ill-informed, constrained or have other interests. Discovering this cause is the path to success.

Negotation or manipulation ?

This is a question I asked myself when reading the book and writing this summary.

Should I promote tactics that could, for some of them, be related to manipulation ?

I think the answer lies in the cause you are fighting for.

Both Robin Hood and Prince John are stealing, but their causes are opposite. Does one cause justify stealing and the other not ?

Einstein developed the theory of relativity but did not invent the nuclear bomb. Is the discovery the problem, or the usage we make out of it ?

Chris Voss provides some efficient tools. These are enablers.

You are the one who decide why and how you use them. The change you want to make happen is yours.

And it’s definitely better if you play the infinite game and your cause is a just one.

AP FACT CHECK: Trump’s not-so-strong Medicare, economy myths

WASHINGTON — Eager to dismiss his critics, President Donald Trump is fabricating the circumstances regarding jobs, the economy and the social safety net.

He insists that Social Security and Medicare are becoming stronger under his watch when the most recent government report shows the financial condition of both programs worsening. On the economy, his claims of spurring the strongest U.S. growth ever fall way short.

The statements were among varied misrepresentations from the White House and in hearings for his Supreme Court nominee, coming in a remarkable week after an anonymous senior official went public about an effort within the administration to thwart his agenda. Trump also faces the special counsel’s continuing Russia investigation, fewer than 60 days before November’s midterm elections.

A look at the rhetoric and how it compares with reality:

MEDICARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY

TRUMP: “We’re saving Social Security. The Democrats will destroy Social Security. We’re saving Medicare. The Democrats want to destroy Medicare. …We will keep it going. We’re making it stronger. We’re making Social Security stronger.” — remarks Wednesday.

TRUMP, promoting Montana Republican Matt Rosendale’s Senate campaign: “I’m going to protect your Social Security. We’re going to take care of your Social Security. Matt Rosendale is going to make sure we’re not touching your Social Security and your Medicare is only going one way. That’s stronger.” — Montana rally Thursday.

THE FACTS: Trump hasn’t made Medicare and Social Security stronger.

The government’s annual trustees reports on the programs released in June shows the financial condition of both worsening significantly since last year. The projected insolvency for Social Security stayed unchanged — in 2034 — but Medicare’s moved three years closer, to 2026.

Both programs also will start tapping their reserves this year, meaning that income from payroll taxes and interest earned by the Social Security and Medicare trust funds will no longer cover costs. That threshold was still a few years away in last year’s report. As a result, Social Security and Medicare will need a $416 billion transfer from the government’s general revenues this year, when the federal deficit is already rising.

Last year’s Republican tax bill, which cut taxes on Social Security benefits, helped exacerbate the shortfall. So did the Trump-supported repeal of the individual mandate in so-called Obamacare. The repeal promises to increase the number of people without health insurance and therefore Medicare payments for uncompensated medical care.

Trump campaigned on a promise not to cut Social Security or Medicare, but he hasn’t offered a blueprint for either program. Democrats want to expand the social safety net by spending more.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has argued that tax cuts, rolling back regulations and better trade agreements could boost economic growth and help stabilize Medicare and Social Security. But nonpartisan government experts who produced the annual Social Security assessment didn’t seem to accept that, forecasting “sustained moderate economic growth.”

TRADE

TRUMP: “‘Ford has abruptly killed a plan to sell a Chinese-made small vehicle in the U.S. because of the prospect of higher U.S. Tariffs.’ CNBC. This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs!” — tweet Sunday.

THE FACTS: It’s not true that Trump’s taxes on Chinese imports will now mean the Focus Active can be built in the U.S.

Citing Trump’s new tariffs, Ford on Aug. 31 said it was dropping plans to ship the hatchback vehicle to the United States from China.

But Ford said in a statement Sunday “it would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the U.S.,” given forecast yearly sales below 50,000. For now, that means Ford simply won’t sell the vehicle in the United States.

ECONOMY

TRUMP: “We are breaking all Jobs and Economic Records.” — tweet Saturday.

TRUMP: “The Economy is booming like never before, Jobs are at Historic Highs.” — tweet Thursday.

THE FACTS: The economy, though healthy, has been in better shape at many times in the past.

Growth reached 4.2 per cent at an annual rate in the second quarter. That’s the best in the past four years. So far, the economy is growing at a modest rate compared with previous economic expansions. In the late 1990s, growth topped 4 per cent for four straight years, from 1997 through 2000. In the 1980s expansion, growth even reached 7.2 per cent in 1984.

The unemployment rate of 3.9 per cent is strong but it’s not at the best point ever. It is near an 18-year low. The all-time low came in 1953, when unemployment fell to 2.5 per cent during the Korean War. Meanwhile, a greater percentage of Americans held jobs in 2000 than now.

As a whole, the economy is in its 10th year of growth, a recovery that began under President Barack Obama, who inherited the Great Recession. The data show that the falling unemployment rate and gains in home values reflect the duration of the recovery, rather than any major changes made since 2017 by the Trump administration.

2016 ELECTION

TRUMP: “The Dems have tried every trick in the playbook-call me everything under the sun. But if I’m all of those terrible things, how come I beat them so badly, 306-223?” — tweet Saturday.

THE FACTS: For the record, Trump misstates the Electoral College vote in his 2016 presidential race against Democrat Hillary Clinton. The official count was 304 to 227, according to an Associated Press tally of the electoral votes in every state.

Clinton won the popular vote, receiving nearly 2.9 million more votes than Trump after racking up more lopsided victories in big states such as New York and California, according to election data compiled by AP. But she lost the presidency due to Trump’s winning margin in the Electoral College, which came after he narrowly won less populous Midwestern states including Michigan and Wisconsin.

‘FAKE NEWS’ MEDIA

TRUMP: “Isn’t it a shame that someone can write an article or book, totally make up stories and form a picture of a person that is literally the exact opposite of the fact, and get away with it without retribution or cost. Don’t know why Washington politicians don’t change libel laws?” — tweet Wednesday.

TRUMP, addressing GOP Sens. John Thune and Mike Rounds of South Dakota: “We have lousy libel laws… ‘Hey Mike and John, could you do me a favour? Create some libel laws, that when people say stuff bad about you, you can sue them and if you’re right, you win.”‘ — remarks Friday at fundraising event in South Dakota.

THE FACTS: He misstates libel law in claiming that someone can “totally make up stories” or freely write “fake news” without penalty.

Under defamation laws, people can bring a lawsuit for slander or libel if they believe someone’s statements have injured their reputation. For public officials such as Trump, they must meet a higher legal bar than ordinary people due to First Amendment guarantees of a free press and show the statements were made with “actual malice.” That means a publication is at risk by acting with reckless disregard for the truth.

Trump often pledges to make it easier for people to sue for defamation, typically after the publication of books or news articles that present an unflattering portrait of the White House. But he has little influence to change the laws.

Libel laws are set at the state level, which the president and Congress do not have authority to change. Any attempt to loosen the laws would likely run afoul of the First Amendment, barring a successful Supreme Court challenge or constitutional amendment.

TREASON

TRUMP, questioning whether one of his senior officials acted illegally about an administration effort to thwart his agenda: “TREASON?” — tweet Wednesday.

THE FACTS: Not treason. The official who wrote anonymously in The New York Times about the “quiet resistance” against Trump is surely disloyal to the president but not a traitor in the legal sense.

Treason occurs when a U.S. citizen, or a noncitizen on U.S. territory, wages war against the country or provides material support, not just sympathy, to a declared enemy of the United States.

For instance, in the Cold War case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were executed for giving atomic secrets to Russia, the Rosenbergs were convicted of espionage, not treason, because the U.S. and Russia were not officially at war. No one has been convicted of treason since the aftermath of World War II, few have been through history and no one has been executed for that crime, says Carlton F.W. Larson, a University of California law professor who has a book coming on treason.

In 2006, the Bush administration brought a treason indictment against Adam Gadahn, an American who authorities say became an operative and spokesman for al-Qaida abroad. The Obama administration said he was killed in a 2015 counterterrorism operation in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region.

Treason is addressed in the Constitution as part of an effort by the framers to prevent the government from using it as a reason to suppress political speech, said J. Richard Broughton, associate dean at University of Detroit Mercy and a member of the Republican National Lawyers Association. Congress has little if any power to change the definition and the executive branch can only bring charges in extremely limited cases.

Trump’s opponents have used “treason” loosely as the special counsel investigates contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia, and it is thrown around widely in the public discourse by all sides.

Trump is using the word loosely now.

KAVANAUGH HEARINGS

DEMOCRATIC SEN. AMY KLOBUCHAR of Minnesota, asking about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s views on the scope of a president’s executive power: “I’m asking about your position that you stated in this law review article that a president should be not subject to investigations while in office. You’re only saying that they should be subject to investigation as part of an impeachment (proceeding by Congress) and that there’s no other investigation that could occur? Is that fair?” — Senate hearing Wednesday.

KAVANAUGH: “No. … On criminal investigation and prosecution, I did not take a position on the constitutionality. Period.”

THE FACTS: His claim is highly questionable, based on his past writings.

In a 2009 Minnesota Law Review article, Kavanaugh cast doubt on whether a president should be subject to what he described as “time-consuming” criminal investigations, cautioning that it could distract the nation’s chief executive from doing the job. He wrote in a footnote that “a serious constitutional question exists regarding whether a President can be criminally indicted and tried while in office.”

A decade earlier, Kavanaugh wrote that the Constitution seems to dictate that “congressional investigation must take place in lieu of criminal investigation when the President is the subject of investigation, and that criminal prosecution can occur only after the President has left office.”

Special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating whether the Trump campaign co-ordinated with Russia during the 2016 campaign to tip the election in his favour, and whether Trump obstructed justice such as by firing FBI director James Comey.

DEMOCRATIC SEN. DIANNE FEINSTEIN of California: “In the 1950s and 60s, the two decades before Roe, deaths from illegal abortions in this country ran between 200,000 and 1.2 million. That’s according to the Guttmacher Institute.” — Senate hearing Wednesday.

THE FACTS: That’s wrong, and she corrected herself Friday. Known deaths from illegal abortion were much smaller. The California senator conflated the estimated number of women who had an illegal abortion with the number who died from it, according to the research she cites.

The Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights, cites estimates in a 2003 report that 200,000 to 1.2 million illegal abortions were performed in the 1950s and 1960s in the U.S. The report says the number of deaths from illegal abortion dropped from just under 1,700 in 1940 to just over 300 by 1950 and a little under 200 by 1965. The Supreme Court established a constitutional right to abortion in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

RUSSIA INVESTIGATION

TRUMP ATTORNEY RUDY GIULIANI, citing a “60 day run-up to 2018 elections”: “If Mueller wants to show he’s not partisan, then issue a report on collusion and obstruction. They will show President Trump did nothing wrong.” — tweet Aug. 25.

THE FACTS: He’s wrong in suggesting there is a 60-day cutoff date before the Nov. 6 midterm elections, which came Friday, for Mueller to wrap up the Russia investigation.

Trump and his allies including Giulani often cite a Justice Department policy on the issue. But in fact, no written policy setting a deadline exists and Mueller can continue the probe and issue new indictments. He also has no time constraints regarding finishing or releasing the findings of his investigation.

The only thing that’s changed is that Labor Day kicked off high election season in the battle for control of the House and Senate. So any action by Mueller between now and the Nov. 6 voting risks being seen as an effort to affect the outcome.

The Justice Department does have guidelines about investigations in advance of an election, which have been interpreted over the past decade to mean that investigators, if possible, should avoid taking specific actions — such as indicting candidates or raiding their office — in the run-up to an election.

“Law enforcement officers and prosecutors may never select the timing of investigative steps or criminal charges for the purpose of affecting any election, or for the purpose of giving an advantage or disadvantage to any candidate or political party,” one such memo from 2012 states.

But the policy does not impose a specific cutoff date for investigations before an election.

Yakuza Kiwami: Kiwami Means Mixed Bag!

Outside of the blue blur, the Yakuza franchise is one of SEGA’s more acclaimed and successful franchises, and in recent years has experienced an explosion of popularity in the West. With the successful sales of the fifth game and prequel Yakuza 0, SEGA uses the latter game’s engine to bring us Yakuza Kiwami, an enhanced remake of the first game for modern consoles. The legend of Kazuma Kiryu begins, but from where I stand, I see that this remake carries with it just as much bad as it does good…

Kazuma Kiryu has a bright future ahead of him in the yakuza, a member of the Dojima family. Things take a turn for the worse when his best friend Nishikiyama murders their clan’s patriarch. Kiryu takes the blame for the murder, being expelled from the Yakuza and going to prison. Ten years pass, and when Kiryu once again walks the streets of Kamurocho, he finds that both the city and the people within it have changed. Nishikiyama now seems poised to take advantage of a civil war brewing between the various yakuza families and Kiryu finds himself caught in the middle of a conspiracy involving the disappearance of his childhood friend Yumi, the theft of ten billion yen from the yakuza and a little girl named Haruka who seems to be the key to it all. For the most part, Kiwami is a solid crime drama, aided by the voice work combined with the motion capture that the modern Yakuza games have employed. Compared to the original localization of the PS2 game, Kiwami is a much more faithful translation overall. The remake also includes a few flashback scenes that better flesh out Nishikiyama as a character, building off of his supporting role in Yakuza 0. It gives the conflict between him and Kiryu a bit more weight; something the original seemed sorely lacking in, where the fact that he was Kiryu’s old friend came off as more of an informed attribute than anything else.

Alongside the main story, there are still plenty of distractions for players to dive into around Kamurocho. Despite these games being open world, the focus is not on huge, sprawling environments, but rather compact, densely-layered ones. Kamurocho isn’t all that big; a few city blocks at most...but there’s no shortage of things to do, with every step a new shop or NPC will be waiting. Kiwami features a variety of side-stories Kiryu can get involved in, some being humorous little vignettes while others can build upon each other. If I had to lay one criticism at these, far too many side stories involve Kiryu being conned, and how he reacts is inconsistent. Sometimes he sees right through it instantly, and at other times players need to make him fall for it in order to progress.

There are also an obscene amount of minigames found within Kamurocho, totally optional as a way to kill time, but can occasionally net you neat rewards. Everything from karaoke, mahjong, batting cages and billiards to model car races, frequenting cabaret clubs and playing Mesuking, a Rock-Paper-Scissors fighting game involving women dressed in bug-themed lingerie, with so much more I could mention. 

Some of these are surprisingly in-depth, the model car races having a decently strategic customization system as an example. These, together with the side stories, help give Kiwami a lot of its character. While Kiryu is a stone-cold badass who is meant to be the epitome of machismo, he’s also incredibly goofy. He really gets into some of these events, and reacts to losses pretty hard. He treats getting a gutter ball in bowling like a great stain on his character. Kiryu ends up being a great straight man throughout a lot of the more ridiculous scenarios in the game, while never really losing his edge. The nicest former-gangster you’ll ever meet, really.

Of course, there’s still the actual GAME to talk about still, as everything else up until now has mostly been icing on the cake. Yakuza as a series is a beat-em up with some RPG mechanics added for flavor. Mop the floor with enemies as Kiryu switches between different combat styles, ending with a brutal Heat move, basically this game’s equivalent of a super move. As Kiryu hits on enemies and avoids damage himself, the Heat gauge rises and when enough is filled, he can spend it on a powerful cinematic attack. There’s a lot of variety to the Heat actions in the game, many of them contextual. Performing one near a car has Kiryu open the door and shove the victim in, before slamming the door shut on their neck. Or he’ll throw them on a railing, or beat on them with a weapon he picked up off the ground. As you progress through the game and gain experience, you can fill in various skill trees that can grant even more moves to your combat styles and more uses of the Heat meter. Speaking honestly, the combat feels highly limited at first, though that changes as Kiryu grows stronger and players have more options to play around with. Fights can be fairly cathartic as you pound various hoodlums or drunkards around town, though problems start to set in with the boss fights.

Most bosses in Kiwami either A) have super-armor and shrug off any attack you throw at them, B) are super evasive/defensive or C) force you to fight a ton of enemies at once on top of the boss. In fact, I’d wager MOST bosses check all three boxes and as a result, fights tend to be more frustrating than they need to be. I get that difficulty is subjective, but the boss fights are hard not due to a lack of skill most of the time, but because they are designed to be as much of a slog as possible. Be it having to take out a dozen or more enemies before you can even focus on the boss (all the while the boss is free to take potshots at you), or just having to chase the boss down again and again, the bosses are the weakest part of the game overall I find, particularly the penultimate boss.

The more I played the game, the more I began to see the shortcomings of the combat. Sure, aspects of it are improved with level-ups and upgrades, but it’s not enough. The game seems built around Heat actions, but you expend almost the entire gauge when performing a move, regardless of how much you upgraded the meter, and if an enemy hits you even once, most of the meter drains as well. Sure, you can use items to regain Heat, but it ruins the momentum of the fight. Kiryu’s multiple battle styles seem poorly balanced overall as well. He has four styles you can switch between at any time, each with their own use. Beast is all power, with no speed, while Rush is the opposite. Brawler is meant as the balanced version between the two, while the Dragon of Dojima style is Kiryu’s iconic battle style that is initially so crippled as to be unusable, but if upgraded vastly outpaces the other styles to the point that they become useless. The problem is that upgrading the Dragon style is related to one of two new features added in the remake: the Majima Everywhere system.

Goro Majima is the breakout star of the Yakuza games, a demented rival to Kiryu that grew increasingly popular as the games continued. In Kiwami, he has a much greater presence when compared to the PS2 game, constantly showing up to challenge Kiryu to a fight to have him regain his fighting prowess. As such, he is an extremely aggressive random encounter throughout the game. The same can also be said of Kiwami’s other new gimmick, the Essence of Kiwami Finishers. They’re essentially a “super” Heat move, done when a boss gets staggered and emits a colored aura. Switch to the appropriate battle style that matches that aura and you can perform a Kiwami Finisher that does tons of damage. It seems like a good enough mechanic on paper, a little frivolous if anything, but the problem lies in that once the boss gets staggered they start to RAPIDLY recover health. A few seconds is all it takes to regenerate almost an entire health bar, and seeing that you’ll likely have to switch to the appropriate style, that regeneration is almost guaranteed. If you’re particularly unlucky, the Kiwami Finisher won’t even negate the health they regain and you’ll be back to square one. Making matters worse is that both the first boss and the last boss had me unable to use the mechanic; the former due to not knowing I had to use my (at the time limited) experience to unlock the ability despite being able to use it freely in the tutorial, and the latter due to it being locked behind the Majima Everywhere system. This adds nothing to the game overall and just feels like a thoughtless addition that actively damages the game because it wasn’t designed with it in mind.

That sums up a lot of Kiwami, really. It certainly adds a lot, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to improving the game at all. Visually and mechanically, the game is a definite upgrade to the old PS2 game, but at the same time changes to enemy behavior and the Kiwami and Majima Everywhere systems almost ruin the game and result in frustration and annoyance over everything else. For a remake that’s meant to improve upon what was already there, I feel like there are plenty of areas the game COULD have improved upon itself but SEGA decided not to. Bosses could have been fleshed out to be more enjoyable,for one. Then, rather than keeping Kiryu’s move set splintered like it was in Yakuza 0 they could have brought the four styles back together, but instead they keep his iconic move set locked behind tedious, repetitive fights with Majima. There’s still plenty to do in Kiwami, and it does a lot of things well, but the combat is the main meat of the game and it suffers from needless meddling. Remaking something is a delicate balancing act; change too much and you ruin what made the original special, but not changing anything begs the question of why you’d remake it in the first place. This time around, Yakuza Kiwami spoils the broth a bit. I wouldn’t say it’s an awful game, but it falls short in a lot of ways.
