BASICALLY!

you got mini promo in my critical thinking lecture bc we were learning about Buddhist philosophy and my professor was like yeah these stories usually have a ✨guru ✨ and i was like OMG I KNOW HA! so yeah that whole week you were living rent free in my mind like woah!

and then i started talking to this person, not talking in like a omg this has the potential to be something more bc now that i think about it… i think i might be aromantic or something or it could just be that i have some like unresolved deep rooted subconscious trauma i need to work through to feel comfortable being vulnerable around someone… let alone a MAN ugh. anyways yeah the thing is when i told my roomies that this person may be idk have the intentions of being more than friends i got this feeling my roommate might have feelings for this person so i was like woah i need to back tf off. like to me if they did have feelings i would’ve used it as a way to get my virginity over and done with like GET HER OUT OF HERE! but now i’m setting up that boundary and i tell my roommate like girl you need to do something about this crush and she’s like no no you texted first and i was like GIRL I DONT LIKE THEM! but yeah i’ve hung out with them like twice and yeah im not feeling it at all, call me fucked up but they’re just too nice, it’s like they’re beating around the bush with me and prioritizing my feelings like hello? that’s not how i work, i’m so indecisive don’t put every decision we make on me yk? and they’re also very feminine which i feel really bad about saying bc they’re non-binary/ gender fluid but i tend to be attracted to more masculine/dominant energy (hence why i love your shit hello? 😋)

this is my finals week too and i just had my first final for chemistry and i just know that shit was bad like tell me why i guessed on 3/4 of that exam 😭 and then after i was done i turned on my phone to see messages from my study group saying they’re outside the building to celebrate… EXCUSE ME?! CELEBRATE WHAT EXACTLY?! i flopped. f for fail? more like f for FLOP! but yeah i have a bio exam tmrw and im not feeling it! like whyyyyyy! this is what i get for being a stem major like-

initial: i’m most interested in pimple bc no one names a song that without a solid reason + believing it’ll be iconic. tick-tack is the one that caught my ear the most in the highlight medley. i already watched the cherish mv and i knew i was going to adore it but it really blew me away with just how stellar it was. they’re solidly establishing themselves as concept queens and i love to see it

i’ll like you: fun moving bass. really full sounding production. ohh i loooove chanting in songs <33 i wish she was longer though

cherish (my love): absolutely stellar opening, the mv was everything i could have wanted but so much more. minju’s vocals are heavenly. yuna is shining in this song and mv too 🫶 this chorus snippet has been stuck in my head for the past week and i’ve been anticipating it sm. the verses sound so good. can’t believe we got a bridge too 😭 the mv was really hard pushing yuna’s visuals (as they should)

iykyk (if you know you know): i don’t think i had any thoughts about this from teasers. just positively neutral. ahhh the chorus hits. it’s like lucky girl syndrome’s more chill sister. + a legit rap :o ik they said this ep was a really different side of them from SRM + it’s definitely coming through in the music, while still firmly building on their established sonic identity.

pimple: wonhee opening maybe? it’s very wistful but hopeful. it’s so pretty. lots of sweet vocal moments here. i can’t wait to read lyrics bc it sounds so sentimental and contemplative. also super interested in seeing a live performance + lines distributions to know exactly who has what lines bc they all sound so lovely

tick-tack: ohhh i love this opening. this is just pure fun. what a great album closer. this is sooo tailored to me. i think the people who love her are going to absolutely adore her. definitely going to be one of their iconic bsides. awww ending the album on “nice to see ya” how cuuute

overall thoughts

this makes so much sense as their first cb. it absolutely follows well and logically from SRM. it delivers everything that was lovable about their debut while developing and making it more interesting

it’s much fuller + diverse than debut mini. i want to cry over having five new songs i was going crazy only having the four to loop

belift is doing great so far at picking TTs for them. the concept + choreo + song are all amazing. i really couldn’t have asked for better. my only criticism is the length but that’s virtually every release the past two years. the songs feel like they’re the right length though, not like they’re lacking or short

i’m so happy with this and for them. i hope they have a wonderful promotion period and i’m sooo excited to follow it + see how the rest of their career develops 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍

genuinely curious about what u said in your recent comment on sixspence's ceo tim art bc as far as i know (read: as far as my mostly fanon + wiki knowledge goes) i thought he was the ceo? or majority shareholder/owner? idk, im not very well versed on the red robin comics so i was wondering if u got that from there? thank u!

I got it from the Red Robin Comics but also because I’ve read pretty much all of the comics Tim appeared in before N52. Which helps give more context.

So you see, It’s like Bruce, he owns the company, but he doesn’t actually work there. Until New 52, Lucius was the one acting as CEO for Wayne Company while Bruce was the face of it. If he wanted something he’d tell Lucius who would make it happen so he was still technically “The BOSS” but he generally let Lucius do his own thing cause he trusted his decision (the truth is they’re made of the same wood). And Bruce never asked anything Lucius was actually against so that helps.

Tim kept that. Now Tim’s dad had his own company in which Tim never shown any interest (it sunk due to internal strife + Jack losing interest + it seemed his wife was the main chief there), the same way he never showed interest in Wayne Enterprise. The thing is, he’s also terrible at managing his money as he’s generally lived a sheltered and very rich life. Obviously he’s gotten better but it’s the guy for whom getting his own apartment means he gets his own pop corn machine. He doesn’t know a thing about running a business (no interest in his family company + little to no interest in school ensured that). Or rather…he knows enough to analyse and to predict what others would do and what can be done to stop them as a vigilante, but not enough to make the best choices himself (it’s kinda like the difference between an art critic and an artist). 

So he could probably learn to be a CEO but why would he when Lucius is perfect for the job and actually likes it ? While Tim is about as interested in it as Shawn Spencer is (that’s to say : not at all, btw I recommend watching the first episode of Psych. Obviously Shawn and Tim are fairly different characters (Tim’s more like the love son of Shawn and his best friend Gus tbh) but they have enough similarities that it could be an interesting watch).

However what Tim did was work on a charity program called The Neon Knights Fundation. The point was to help at-risk teenagers from turning to crime by providing youth shelters and community activities for youth gangs. He did it for 2 reasons : 1. the idea was good.2. He could expose some corrupt police officers.Then he realized he could use it to get other more… specific criminals by drawing them out as Tim Drake and he jumped to the occasion (the famous time when he was Shot but used M’Gann as a decoy since she couldn’t actually be hurt).Then, since it was a good idea and he needed to go to Russia for a mission he got the idea of making it an international program (which would give him an excuse to be in a different country for missions….And would generally just give him an excuse to go outside…Which is part of why the whole conclusion of him needing to stay in Gotham never made sense to me…I mean c’mon, the kid spent the major part of vigilante life OUTSIDE of Gotham, but that writer tends to want to turn Tim into a mini Bruce so…).

But for this to happen first he got the help of Tiffany and Tamara Fox to create the file to pitch the idea to Lucius, to help him with his presentation and accompanied him when he did it (Tam being the only one who knew his secret ID tho I’m pretty sure Lucius got an idea that Bruce is Batman so…He doesn’t officially know anything but he most likely guessed Tim was Robin). Tiffany became the manager of the Fundation, so even there Tim isn’t completely in charge.

Ultimately, Tim’s thing is that he’s a social butterfly. He’s good at talking to people and he likes it. He’s probably the most social Batfam member. So he stays as Wayne Enterprise’s face, like Bruce was, he gets invited to charities and parties, ect… . Because of his training under Batman one newpaper once called him a genius so he doesn’t have to act dumb like Bruce did but he definitely keeps it on the more “social” side rather than the business one in canon (not that there were that many issues about this since New 52 happened rather quickly).But because he was stuck in the middle of Gotham in No Man’s Land, he went to school in a “mixed” high school (his bff, Ives, who he met there for example was part of the lower middle class for example), and a few other thing happen that could make it understandable why he’d be more concerned about the social part of Gotham in addition to being adopted by Bruce Wayne who’s known for being dumb and…Flamboyant and giving to charities without thinking things through, he can get away with that without people overthinking things too much (except for Vicky Vale).

So generally there’s no reason to believe Tim would act as the CEO since he spends his time gallivanting here and there. He also never especially sets foot in an office that can be called his. He canonically doesn’t want to work as one (literally said so several time, just like how he doesn’t want to be Batman).

I love Tim but being CEO just isn’t something he’d want to do or be good at it. He’d be decent with some training but it’s clrealy not a passion or an ambition of his, hell I’m pretty sure if Damian grows up well enough Tim’d give him the ownership willingly in order to be free of it and go work in a garage somewhere.

The Most Pt. 1

A/N: Okay so this is my first ever John Wick fic! In a nutshell, it’s basically like a mentor X student AU. I don’t know why but i couldn’t get that idea out of my head and i really wanted to write it, so here! It’s called The Most bc it reminds me of the song with the same title from Miley Cryrus’s new EP. I wouldn’t say the fic is inspired by the song, not entirely at least, but idk to me it just vibes with it (if that makes any sense? i feel like once the second part is out it might make more sense?). This fic is intended to have a second part so that shall also be posted shortly as i have another mini John Wick fic i wanna start and i also want to write the second part to my short Spider-Man fic. Today marks the fourth and a half year that you’ve been under John Wick’s tutelage. Only six more months left and John will have had completed his marker. Initially, John was rather reluctant to be your instructor but the marker held by your father gave him no other choice but to abide by your father’s request to turn you into a formidable assassin. Who better to teach you than the infamous John Wick himself?

In the beginning of your training journey, John didn’t bother to hide his reluctance in your father’s request. This made things rather difficult until one day you decided to confront him about his behavior. He was in his study, probably searching for a way to get out of having to train you, when you knocked to let your presence be known then proceeded to enter.

“Evening, Mr. Wick, call me crazy, but I’m getting an inkling that you don’t want to train me.”

He scoffed.

“Believe me, I get it. I bet you’d really rather not have me intercepting with your lonesome peace and quiet but the bottom line is that I have to do this too and I have to learn it all to be as good as you. Maybe not exactly as good as you, but good enough to have me not die immediately as that would be, despite your current opinion of me, quite upsetting.”

He silently glared at you for a long minute, still not very much pleased with his current situation, “Why do you want to do this?”

“Want, who said anything about want? You may be bound by a marker, Mr. Wick, but I’m bound by my family to learn and master everything that there is to know about how to thrive in this lifestyle to survive in it.”

The room remained uncomfortably silent for sometime but you still didn’t falter in your stance.

“Before me who did you train with?” he asked.

“Well I was being trained in Krav Maga by Gabriel Avdeyev for some time but he and my family had a falling out and-–”

“I heard,” he sighed. “.... Based on the results of your initial assessment you have a lot to improve on. For starters, the way you initiate your attacks are okay but they will need to be refined or you will be killed. Get some rest. Tomorrow at dawn we will continue your training.”

Despite knowing John couldn’t actually purposely hurt or kill you, he was still very intimidating and the confrontation was rather hard to execute. But, it paid off.

Training with the notorious John Wick also meant living with him and sometimes that involved taking care of each other. Along with being a good fighter and shooter, John also stressed that one needs to know how to properly patch themselves up. He’s given you medical lessons before but to really teach you, one night he decided to not go to his usually doctor for a patch up but to go directly to you instead and see what you’ve retained from your lessons. When that great idea struck him it was in the middle of the night and he gave you quite a fright when he went into your room all bloody. You almost shot him with the gun you had hidden under your pillow if it weren’t for his quick reflexes which actually made you feel really impressed considering he was critically injured.

“Are you serious, John?” you asked, rather irked at being abruptly awoken at three in the morning.

“No, I’m bleeding. Now get up, this is part of your training. Time to see how much you’ve retained from those medical lessons,” he grunted as another pang of pain struck his lower abdomen.

You promptly threw your covers over your body and got out of bed before leading him to the bathroom where the first aid kit was kept. After finding the source of his bleeding you unbuttoned his shirt and got to work. Under the circumstances, seeing John shirtless wasn’t at all awkward. However, ogling his exposed chest was the last thing on you mind considering how he was bleeding an awful lot from his lower abdomen.

“Jesus what did they nick you with? This looks really bad,” you comment as you inspect the wound.

“Broken bottle of champagne. Try to avoid those in the future, they can be pretty tricky to fix.”

“Yeah, no shit,” you proceeded to clean the wound and remove any stray traces of glass, subconsciously taking quick glances at him whenever he winced. “Do you need anything for the pain?”

“Do you happen to have bourbon in any of these cabinets?”

“No, but I wouldn’t really recommend that considering how alcohol consumption can actually thin your blood out and make you bleed more.”

“But it does help with the pain.”

“Mmmmm, I’d still wager more on the pills designed specifically for that.”

John huffed. At this point you’re finally starting to stitch up his wound but his pained grunts make it a little difficult to focus.

“Are you okay?”

“Don’t worry, it’s nothing I’m not used to.”

“That’s so sad, John,” you paused to briefly glance at him. “Also super broody. We get it, you’re a badass.”

“A bad ass? That seems rude,” he sarcastically replied.

“Oh, my god, you’re actually joking with me for the second time this night. Don’t think I missed that dad joke earlier with the ‘No, I’m bleeding,’” you imitated his gruff voice and lightly laughed. “Good one, John.”

The small smile subconsciously remained on your face for a few seconds longer and John couldn’t help but admire how nicely it adorned your face. You caught him vaguely looking at you but simply assumed blood loss had something to do with the way he was looking at you. He turned away before you could even question your hypothesis.

“Well, we’re all done now. With the abdomen wound at least,” you noticed he’s also bleeding from his head and move to inspect it but his hands reached out and gently grabbed your wrists.

“It’s alright, (Y/N), I can take care of the rest, you’ve done good with the ugliest of them.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, John, I’m here now and I’ve got this for you.”

Never one to waste words, John remained silent which you took as a go ahead.

Thankfully the injuries on his head were nothing more than a few small cuts. At least on that night they were. Some nights John would come back with much rougher cuts, clearly showing that whoever he had fought had certainly put up a good fight but not quite good enough to best John Wick. Still, not only did cleaning his injuries provide you with insights to his battles, it helped you both establish a sense of trust between you two.  

After that night, rather than go to his usual doctor John began going straight to you for his patch ups. Could he have chosen to start going to you simply because it’s quicker than stopping by The Continental first and then home? Possibly. The reason for him basically appointing you as his patch up doc never really came up but you didn’t really care. By then your affection and attachment to John was beginning to grow so you didn’t mind being the one to help him feel better after a difficult job. Not to mention that tending to his wounds meant having a good excuse to touch him. Not while overstepping your boundaries, of course, but sometimes it was just nice to be able to be able to grab his hands without it being weird. Tending to the cuts on his face was something you always saved for last. It was your chance to really admire his facial features up close while simultaneously healing it. Sometimes you were so gentle with him that he actually managed to doze off and you were able to tell when it happened because he’d look so relaxed and serene. When you had to wake him up, although you didn’t want to but you knew he’d sleep much more comfortably in his bed than in a stiff chair, he’d always apologize for falling asleep which in effect often lead you both to joke about it. However, you swear that you caught him blushing the first few times it happened and when it did it just felt so, human…

You and John have really come a long way in terms of tolerating each other and actually bonding together. You both truly did. Because John is your instructor and you are over a decade younger than him, your relationship with him was purely professional. However, after about two years of training with him, your feelings for him continued to evolve into a much more stronger and different kind of admiration.

Are you in love with The Baba Yaga?

The answer to that would be a very strong perhaps. When you and John were briefed on the deal of the marker, you were supposed to learn about weapons training, fighting forms, assassination techniques, melee weapons training, etc. You were to learn how to become a proficient and deadly assassin, such as John, not about love or anything else that might be considered a weakness.

You hardly ever give yourself the chance to ponder on your feelings for John, much less at the possibility that he could possess the same feelings of affection towards you. It’s not as if you believe that the less you think or talk about it the less real it is, you aren’t that naive. You’ve simply decided long ago that you’re not going to act on your feelings for John. Love or anything remotely close to that is just not in the cards for people like you and John. At least that’s what you keep repeating to yourself.

Still, with your training nearing to an end you’ve been feeling really glum about it. Training with the notorious John Wick hasn’t been easy but living with and falling in love with the real man behind the legend was so foolishly easy. John is an extremely proficient killer, that much is true, but he is also a man. John is a man with dry humor, a latent love for the simpler things in life, a fun penchant for stunt driving and cars, kind and gentle eyes, and, surprisingly but also not really, a man of a very chivalrous nature. Despite the initial turbulence in your mentor-student relationship, you and John inevitably became good friends which really allowed you to see him under a different light. He often took you out to nice dinners claiming that he wanted a change of scenery from an uneventful day or simply because you did very well while training. Either way you enjoyed your outings with him and also simply appreciated being in an entirely different place, not being reminded of the person you’re supposed to become. However whenever you got injured while training to become that person, John would actually help patch you up. Although he’s taught you how to do so yourself, John would claim the medical lessons were mainly for when you are by yourself and have no one to help you and he’d remind you that he’s there with you now. Which is pretty similar to what you’ve told him the first time you helped patch him up now that you think of it. For an assassin who’s extremely well known for his brutal techniques and merciless takedowns, it astounded you to learn that the same man can also be so gentle. You’re not even officially leaving yet but you already know just how badly you’re going to miss John Wick.

In spite of yourself choosing to not focus on a particular set of feelings held for a particular person, today your brain can’t help but do the exact opposite. Today, John decided to focus more on Brazilian Jui-Jitsu. Little to your knowledge, John actually enjoys training you in this fighting form because these techniques allow a weaker or smaller attacker to successfully overpower a stronger opponent by manipulating the human body and redirecting it’s force. Therefore, if you do it right, you could use the opponent's strength against them and take them down. Usually you do very well in this form of martial arts but today John is able to tell you’re not fully there with him. Although John is very good at Brazilian Jui-Jitsu you’re level of skill is practically on par with his as well and you’re current struggle to beat him is alerting him.

Currently, John has you in locked in a rear choke hold on the ground, with one arm wrapped around your neck, his other arm around your free arm, and one leg wrapped around your other arm preventing you from breaking free. You struggle for a few seconds, realizing there’s no use, he’s already one this match, and grunt in frustration. John loosens his grip around you but doesn’t fully release you yet, he brings his lips close to your ear, “What’s wrong?”

The feel of his breath on your skin sends shivers down your spine, yet you quickly and physically swat those thoughts to the side and shake your head, “Right now you have me in a choke hold and I can’t get out of it, John. I don’t know about you but this seems like a pretty big issue for me.”

John instantly releases his grip on you and rises up, he’s about to lend you a hand to get up as well but you’ve already beaten him to that.

“That’s not what I meant, (Y/N). Tell me, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong,” you insist. “What makes you think something’s wrong?”

“For starters, I’ve been kicking your ass in this all day when I know I’ve taught you better than that. And for another, you just seem very distracted today.”  

John is as perceptive as he is deadly, which is why you don’t bother lying to him again and instead insist on continuing to train.

You look down for a second before looking up, making sure to avoid his concerned gaze, “Look, John, do you mind if we just call it in for the day?”

“Something is wrong,” he states.

“John,” you impatiently groan.   

“Why won’t you just tell me what the issue is?”

“Because there’s nothing you can do about it!” you snap and instantly regret it, rubbing at your temples. “Okay, I did not mean to say it like that. I’m sorry. I just need to cool off right now, John…”

This time you don’t wait for permission and simply walk away, however, John doesn’t try to stop you either. Not because he doesn’t care, quite the contrary in fact. Concerned and confused, John intently watches you head towards your room. He begins to trail after you but halts in his steps deciding that right now the  best option would be to give you your space. Still, John can’t help but wonder about what could possibly be troubling your mind so much and why you refuse to speak of it.

He glances one last time in the direction you previously walked in before heading towards the kitchen and serving himself a shot of bourbon.

“You can’t do anything about it!” your words replay in his mind.

“She’ll tell me when she’s ready,” he mentally tells himself. “We’ll figure it out then.”

John downs two more shots, currently finding it difficult to dwindle his concern and thoughts of you, before taking off in the direction of his room. He encounters the door to your bedroom on his way and halts at the entrance. He balls his hand into a fist and raises it to knock on your door but slowly brings it down and proceeds to head to his room. After finally entering his room, he gives your door one last glance before closing his door and retreating to his room for the remainder of the day.

out my hair  ⏤ a headcanon about duri’s hair throughout the comebacks. 

word count: 1,372. about: i’m giving credit to demi for this one after she made the hair aesthetic because this is where i got the idea from. basically i kind of cover all the hairstyles/colors that duri had with each comeback, just to have some idea!

Duri has had his fair share of different hairstyles over the year, as much as the next person. He’s had bad hairstyles, good hairstyles, and ones that have been seen as pretty much just average. He’s had a few of his favorites as well, and he’s not entirely sure if there’s anything that he’s really actually disliked on himself. He’s believed there’s been a reason for them, maybe he made them work in a certain way and that’s why it went with the concept. He’s really tried to convince himself that the bad hairstyles were all really good, no matter what was said. Nonetheless, these are the hairstyles that Duri was blessed with or cursed with throughout the years of Knight’s comebacks, as well as his own solo work. 

For the pre-debut era of What is Love and History, Duri found himself having a length of hair that was rather short. He had finished his military enlistment in the winter of the year prior, and even though he didn’t need to cut it due to being a public servant, he still did it for an easier upkeep. However, upon finishing working as a public servant for the military enlistment, Duri had to keep cutting it, as it would continue to look a bit uneven. A stylist had finally got it even, resulting in him still having this rather short cut and style for the two pre-debut singles that Knight received. Generally for Mama, his hair would look the same, but some length would be added to it as it was just a few months later. 

The year between Mama and the release of the XOXO album, Duri would find himself growing out his hair. In Wolf, Duri would debut a hairstyle of long hair that was often styled in a ponytail for this era. It seemed to be received rather well and it was something that Duri actually kind of liked. It was different and he always liked trying out the things that seemed to be rather different. When it came to Growl, he would keep the long hair. However, this time it had been styled down, rather than being in a ponytail. Miracles in December would see a hairstyle that followed that of the Growl hairstyle, however, it was shorter. To be quite honest, Duri had always found this one slightly strange, as it almost looked a bit weird to him. During the Overdose era, Duri would show up with a shorter hairstyle again. This one did have much more length than the pre-debut and debut hairstyles did; it was nice to finally get the hair out of his face, to be quite honest. 

In 2015, when Overdose and Love Me Right came around, Duri would find himself with a short, flat style for both. This seemed to be a bit more on-trend, something that wasn’t entirely random. He wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about this one, to say the least. But, it almost felt lacking, like his face and voice were used to cover up the personality that his hairstyle these two eras simply just didn’t have. It would have been nice if there was something that was done slightly different for this, but he had accepted it; he was simply just easy like that. Six months later, Duri’s hair would take on a longer style. This time it was a reddish-brown with a bit more volume than what he had in the comebacks previously. This was something that he enjoyed, mainly because he had liked the color that the hair had taken on. 

As 2016 came around, he would find himself with something new yet again. This time, some of his signature dark brown-colored hairstyles would come out to play. When it came to both Monster and Lucky One, he would have a short hairdo that was styled a bit up and back, something that Duri felt really suited himself. Overdose came shortly after, which had resulted in a style that was down and slightly parted, another style that Duri really liked as well. To be quite honest, this was probably his favorite year when it came to hairstyles, as he didn’t feel a bit weird. The release of Fanfare would see a style that was also down but parted a bit more than that of his Overdose style. Gorilla was the time for bangs to really shine! His hair would be a bit thicker, with bangs covering his forehead, with small almost curled like hairs. This style would be kept similar for the release of Can You Feel It? His hair would just be a bit straighter and without the curled bits within it. 

For the beginning of 2017, Duri would turn black-colored hairstyles. As Roar came around, he would find himself with another hair cut. This time his hairstyle would be a bit of an undercut that was swooped up; he almost wished this style was a lot thicker, rather than them cutting his hair all over again. A few months later, with Easy Love, Duri would still sport a short style still, however this time the bangs were parted, rather than up. He liked his Easy Love hair a lot better than the Roar style, to be perfectly honest. The final half of 2017 was when Duri would find himself having a bigger change. For Kokobop, his hair would be dyed blonde with some brown peaking through and his forehead showing. This was his favorite style of the year, to say the least. When it came to Power, his hair would be bleached a brighter blonde than that of Kokobop’s style. It would be styled differently, with the part being a bit off to the side. 

In 2018, during O Sole Mio, Duri would keep the blonde-dyed hair and the bangs would be styled up, out of his face. However, it was clear that he would be going back to brown hair soon after the O Sole Mio promotions, as it had already begun to peak through during promotions. This remained true with the release of Universe when he would return with one of his signature brown hairstyles. This time his hair remained on the thick side, with his hair a bit up and off to the side. This will always remain his favorite style and something that would happen often for his hair; it’s something that he tends to work very well with. When it came to Critical Beauty, he would have brown hair again, this time with the bangs covering his forehead, and the hair being slightly flat. It was the return of yet another style, just this time with a bit more volume. A surprise would be taken when for Tempo, Duri’s hair would become a much lighter, lighter brown color. This time it would be a bit more tussled around, creating a nice look for the bad boy motorcycle gang or whatever it was that BC Entertainment was going for Tempo. 

In 2019, Duri would see his solo debut with the album WINTER. For this he would remain with the light brown colored hair, this time it was parted and a bit tussled as well, feeling like it gave a really good feeling to the concept of the album itself. As Love Shot came around, Duri would return to having brown hair, and this time his hair would return back to a shorter, less thick style. It was fitting and something that he really liked himself, even if it wasn’t as thick as he usually likes it. For Now or Never, he’d keep the same brown style, but it was just a tad bit thicker than that of Love Shot’s style. During his first comeback with the mini-album Boy, and a Flower, as well as it’s lead single, Beautiful Goodbye, he’d stick with the same signature style that was established, not going far off from the previous two styles in 2019. 

Now that 2020 is around, Duri’s hair has become darker. For Enough, he has gone with a black hairstyle, styled just like Love Shot, Now or Never, and Beautiful Goodbye. This most likely isn’t going to change when he makes his second comeback this April.

notes: creative claims verification for do you love me. no, i didn’t proofread or reformat this so i’m sure there’s mistakes aplenty.

“do you love me” comes after “free somebody” has already been sold off to gold star with an unclear future. it also happens to come early in the process of ash feeling the pressure to learn to write sexier music on demand instead of incidentally, so that he can fit into the image bc seems to be pushing him toward for his next album without sacrificing his control in the creative process.

he has no idea that the song will end up on the same album with “free somebody” that summer at the time of writing it. their genres of retro-inspired pop and alternative r&b and the process they go through from beginning to end aren’t close enough for him to consider that thought, but when he finds out a couple of months later, it will feel fitting in some broad, existentialist way ⁠— a way of thinking ash is admittedly highly prone to when it comes to music. the thing is that they’re both a challenge for him in different ways, but “do you love me” is well within his comfort zone and it comes into existence with ash less self-aware of its challenges. “do you love me” wouldn’t sound too off on his last album or among the other music he works on while the song sits unfinished with all of his other endless drafts of songs, but that doesn’t change how much he likes the song once he finishes it. he approaches all of his music with a self-critical eye, of course, but he can acknowledge when he likes something he’s made, even if he still sees all of the flaws he believes a better writer and producer would have improved on.

this time, the song’s concept and themes aren’t something passed down as a commission from bc’s a&r department, but are part of a personal project to better himself. he just wants to make a song he enjoys again and doesn’t doubts so much while making. it’s after the release of his “swim good” bc portal collab with sohee but before the release of “fantasy” and “lust” on candy’s mini-album that ash first creates his file for what will become “do you love me”.

it’s a cold late winter seoul day. the air from outside turns ash’s nose red and as soon as he’s inside the studio and sheds his coat, he curls in on himself in the studio chair. the bc studios aren’t the most comfortable places in the world with the knowledge that none of them are his in any true capacity beyond the hours he occupies them and other producers come in and out during the day, never leaving everything in quite the same place he’d left them even if he’d been there only the night before.

but that’s okay. he tells himself he’ll have a studio of his own soon. he’ll have earned it by then. all he has to do is keep working and he’ll have that studio of his own in a few months. he hopes. if no one in knight fucks up again. but their track record for not fucking up is admittedly not the best, his own in particular, so he never lets himself think on the realisstic odds of that for too long.

ash logs in to the computer and opens up cubase and his numerous files of unfinished and abandoned works. his phone is cradled in his lap as he consults old memos and notes to see if anything sparks inspiration in him today. there’s file after file of forgotten half-lyrics and messy, hummed melodies that had come to him at inconvenient times ⁠— on the van ride to a schedule or right before a meeting with management or on a water break in the middle of dance practice with the rest of the group. many of the clips fall short of pure genius, but he’d read many years ago, when he’d still been a novice in songwriting by most considerations, that he should save every idea he has because it was impossible to tell when one might be the exact snippet he needs. ever since, he’s done so dutifully, his dedication to this particular subset of his craft one of the few things he can confidently say he likes about himself.

there’s a few ideas he taps on through the touch screen and listens to that he mentally notes to come back to, but it’s when he lands on an older clip he remembers recording when his main focus had been on songs for his own album (causing other ideas to be thrown to the wayside until he could spare time for them) that he thinks he’s found something he can really work with. it’s not too long, the digits underneath the voice memo reading about fifteen seconds in total, but upon hearing himself sing the melody and lyrics he’d all but forgotten about, he starts to see and hear ideas for how it can be fleshed out and built upon, a surefire sign that this might be something good. or something promising, at the very least. it wasn’t enough to be good yet, so he shouldn’t get ahead of himself.

“do you love me? are you feeling me?” his own voice sings to him from his phone, the english beginning of the phrase sliding smoothly into the korean of the second half. the next line is vocalizations mixing actual korean words and unintelligible sounds. he clearly hadn’t had the time to come up with the rest of the lines to accompany the melody in his head when he’d recorded the voice memo, and that isn’t anything new. his brain has become more and more wired to being a twenty-four-seven songwriter, but that doesn’t mean perfect lyrics pop into his head to accompany any random melody that runs through it. life would be better if that was the case, but unfortunately, ash had yet to achieve the precision and reliability of a songwriting robot (though, he considers, bc would surely love it if he was so easily programmable to pump out pop perfection). your in korean is the only actual word he can make out in the second line, but the third line is much clearer. it’s an obvious spin off of the first line, even if he can tell he wasn’t sure about the ending at the time: “i’m feeling you,” there’s hesitation in his voice on the recording but ash likes the way the line flows anyway, “my babe.”

eager to get started with the gem he’s found, he moves to transpose the basic melodic line into cubase on the digital piano hooked up to the computer, then pulls out the pop filtered microphone to lay his own vocals over it to work with. he doesn’t get into full recording artist mode because he knows these won’t be the final vocals on the track, but he has a vision already of how the vocals and instrumental will intertwine in a close, intimate way and he doesn’t want to wait until later in the process to start to tie that in. he plays around with what could go in place of the previously unspecified middle line before he settles on something he feels sets the proper mood for the rest of this song. it ties the bookends of the first and third line together more naturally than any of the other ideas he comes up with. he’s decided he wants to turn this into a fully fledged track already and his brain has already switched over all of the concentration he can manage with that in mind.

he spends the rest of that night on the same song without bothering to even pull up any of the others he’s been working on (despite their impending deadlines), expanding the composition on either end of the tiny snippet he’d started with. it fits nicely into the category of the alternative r&b genr, and ash finds himself more sure of where the songs going once he discovers its fleshing out well within his area of past experience. it’s not too different from songs he’d already released like “dive” and “daydream”, and the trap beats underneath fall into place because of that, part conditioned instinct thanks to the fondness he’s grown to have for how accented punctuation can sound under smooth, silky synths and vocals.

it takes a few weeks for his work to form into a real song because he eventually has to focus on other work that has a deadline or that other producers are depending on him to contribute his time to. or, more accurately, tracks which he’s depending on them to let him contribute his time to. any of them could surely finish it on their own, but ash ghosting on them because of some track of his own becoming his white whale obsession wouldn’t be a good look if he wants to keep working with them.

the rest of the lyrics continue to form as the track becomes more full. he isn’t sure of the context of the original lines at first other than being a part of something romantic and tonally sensual, but after the usual trial and error, he settles into crafting a lyrical story befitting of the song. much like he wants the vocals to weave seamlessly with the instrumental, he wants to lyrics to match the atmosphere the song sets. like the music ebbs and flows, so does the tale the lyrics tell ⁠— an intimate push and pull that leads to the repetition of “do you love me?” and “tell me how you feel”. it’s an emotion ash is all too familiar with, the question of reciprocated feelings and the tension of reading into every word and every mood, so it comes easily as he forces himself to recall what it feels like.

he’s been on the side of elation to discover the object of his affections does love him just as he’s been on the side of dejectedness to realize they don’t feel the same. that need to know is what ash keeps in mind. he doesn’t really want to dwell on the latter emotion

it’s late in the process that ash gets the idea for the song to have two vocals, a more prominent voice that’s likely to be female and an accompanying one that’s likely to be male. he’s not married to the genders of them, but the song is too explicitly instrumental for ash to fool himself into thinking that if it ends up in someone’s hands for actual release one day, it’d be made into a same-sex duet in this industry.

ash brings in one of bc’s female producers to help him record the final demo track and he manages to find a buyer in the form of gold star media again. he doesn’t expect to hear from the company about the song so soon, or at all, but when he hears they’re planning to put it on cherry’s debut solo album, he can only hide his excitement for the sake of professionalism. once the real vocals are laid down, he’s put in charge of finalizing the production to be album ready before it’s sent off for final mixing and mastering and he pushes aside his other projects to focus on the track fully again. there’s something about the song that continues to demand his full attention when it’s in front of him, like a favored child.

there isn’t much he changes about the production now that it has artists on it who will be presenting it to the world, but he keeps in mind the intricacies of cherry’s voice and her delivery, uno’s too, and how they differ from his own and the female producers. he’s had some distance from the initial production now, so he alters small parts he’s had more time to think on, but not enough that he’ll be giving a different song back to gold star.

despite his hectic schedules, he puts the finishing touches of what he’s responsible for on the song ahead of schedule instead of pushing the deadline like he usually does, but some way part of the way through, this song had become easy for him. easy, but not boring, and it doesn’t make him any less satisfied with the final product.

Thoughts on s6~

Putting it all under a cut because I can’t not talk in lengthy paragraphs. Feel free to shoot an ask/message if you want to talk about s6, too

Ok wowie, good season. There were noticable weak points, but I’ll address those along the way. First let’s talk about the 

Plot

It was good. It was surprisingly good. The hidden altean thing where they bold faced put that Lotor was responsible for hundreds or thousands of deaths teeters way out of kids’ show territory. They were not fucking around with that. The fact that they made it clear that the plot was not just paladins vs Galra (esp with Lotor wanting to do away with the Galra), but more along the lines of paladins vs lotor vs generals vs sendak vs so on and so forth makes it not just more complex, but stacks the odds against voltron and adds good suspense. Clone shiro was incredible. It was everything i’ve been waiting for. 

The fight scenes, inside and outside voltron (cough cough KeithvsKuron) were breathtaking. Everything about Krolia was very well put together. THE ANIMATION WAS BREATHTAKING. 

On that note (and dipping into characterization a little bit), they kinda layed it on thick with Lotor romanticizing Allura. He was too goody goody and it made the betrayal lose a little impact (aside from the whole mass murderer thing). there’s a difference between that and foreshadowing. 

Idk why the huge timeskip with Keith and Krolia stuck on that mission bugged me a little, but it did. A timeskip makes sense and is a cool tool to use for the fam to get to catch up, but it just felt. Strange. Two years is a long ass time. Keith was completely unaffected seeing the team again. One could argue that this was bc of the mission, or Krolia teaching Keith how to be a member of the blade and have Super Mission Focus, but still, for Keith to have that much almost-off camera development and not be at least startled to see voltron again was weird. I love my mom to pieces but two years alone with her and eventually I’d go a little nuts.

Characterization

That last point brings me right into characterization, and unfortunately this one is gonna be a little more on the critical side. For the most part, characterization/character focus was well balanced this season. But there were some Moments.

Everyone on team voltron developed, and it was arguably best executed this season than any other. We got to see some great Coran moments, where he really felt like a member of the team. Hunk having a no-nonsense teacher, even just for like 15 minutes lol did him good in terms of communicating with their new allies. Hunk is a people-person, and it shows very well. His camera time wasn’t 100% food related all the time, in fact, barely ever. Bravo.

Pidge of course got her own arc, but it was still a GREAT moment when she admitted to having the coding on Shiro’s arm uploaded and on hand just in case. It was CHILLING when she made eye contact with Kuron before he took off. This is, imo, how Dreamworks should’ve handled other characters who didn’t quite have the spotlight in previous seasons. Not a whole lot of moments, but when they were there, they had impact. I hope they continue to do this.

Do I even need a section for Keith? Holy shit. My boi finally accepting his role as Black Paladin and so much more. :’) I won’t elaborate because c’mon, it was in part, a Keith-centric season

Same for Allura. She really is the heart of Voltron. We got to see a lot of sides of her. 

Lotor being a psycho bitch but still having genuine feelings for Allura?? good shit

LANCEY LANCE. Bless him, Dreamworks is doing their best. In terms of his relationship with Allura, seeing him going from meaningless flirting to serious heart to hearts and a team player was fantastic. BUT I have some grievances, here we go.

Lance got a mini-arc and it was great, and he very clearly grows and changes, this is great! However, regardless of ships, seeing it centric to a romantic relationship, and basically being a rebound for Allura was ahhhhhhehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh eh. 

Pidge and Hunk teasing Lance about his crush was normal, and them pretending to be Lotor and Allura was adorable and hilarious, but Lance was really hurting and when they didn’t stop and just walked out, I???? What. That, to me, is out of character. Hella out of character. Lance is their friend, and they should be?? Friendly??? I was mad @ them

Finally, as much as I love broganes and the great arc they had, they’ve had a tremendous amount of camera time. We’re well away that they’re practically inseparable. What I really wanted to see was the whole team being involved with finding out about Operation Kuron. With Lance seeing Real Shiro in the astral plane, I was really on board with him pulling aside Keith when he came back and be like “ey dude I saw some fucked shit”, and them rescuing Shiro together was a theory I was personally super into. Was kind of disappointment that we didn’t see the relationship between Shiro and the other team members deepen a little more.

First of all, daaaaaaamn that Allurance.

I’ve shipped allurance for a while now, more casually than other ships, so to see Lance change and mature and support Allura while Allura started to show that she really values Lance meant a lot to me. It’s good to see Lance grow up a little. For everything that they were this season, forced was most certainly not one of them. Their relationship felt organic.

However, it was not without flaws. I can’t help but feel like Lance was treated like a rebound, and was almost too? supportive??, and it was telling when Allura was talking with the mice, upon them snITCHIN ON LANCE DAMN MICE, she frowned sadly. I have to wonder if she actually returns his romantic feelings. And I do like the ship a lot, casually and aesthetically. But at the end of the day, what I was hoping to see was a really solid friendship. I think from here they don’t need to be straight up romantic. Their relationship is no doubt one of the strongest in the show, but I think it would be an incredible writing path to keep their friendship, because allurance has been hinted since episode one, and I think it’s almost?? Too easy for the writers to turn it romantic. I think Allura and Lance are a great team and very compatible for friends, but uhhhh read on.

I’ll just address the elephant in the room and come clean, yeahhhhh I like klance and yeeeaaahhhhh I would have really liked to see some more content this season, so sue me lmao. 

If I’m gonna be really blunt about my feelings, I feel like klance is a fantastic direction for Dreamworks to take. I feel like it would be good writing to make klance endgame. Why? Because it’s the path of least resistance. That’s why so many people like it. Keith and Lance were so salty at the beginning, but the crew made an effort to show that in moments that were particularily tough, they have loads of potential and can be very good for each other, romantically or platonically. It’d be harder to write, it’d take time, but I think it’s a worthwhile pairing. And there are definitely some moments that are super disruptic to both Keith and Lance’s development when they, Lance especially, straight up regress in their development and fight for no reason. I think it’s unfair, and it almost always makes me go “wait I thought they were starting to get along better??”. Now that Allurance is a thing, I’ve stated in another post that, because it would be strange for Lance to have two romantic arcs, it’s pretty unlikely that klance will actually happen. Do I think they teased us? Yeah. Do I think they straight up qbaited us? Not really. In the end, my biggest hope is that they continue to develop Keith and Lance’s friendship and don’t abandon the really strong potential they have together. Don’t let them regress, Dreamworks.

I’m not gonna address she/th (or tag it, because who goes into the tag looking for someone to say IM NOT A FAN OF XYZ JUST THOUGHT U SHOULD KNOW) too much because I’m personally not a fan. There’s so much about their relationship associated with “brothers”, and Keith looking up to Shiro that it just doesn’t rub me right in terms of romance. I had to wonder if they aged Keith up two years to justify possible future she/th?? if it happens I’ll be bummed, and I think the random aging up is kind of a cop out, but hey, it’s their show.

RIP Lotura. I stopped shipping it and figured out Lotor was a hoe after his third Dramatic ‘Let’s Bring the Universe Together’ Speech to appeal to Allura’s sense of duty. It’s a shame tho, I was really digging it at the end of season 5

LA trip 1.0

On the way to sf with my mom. Since she's driving the first leg, I might as well take the chance to write about my trip so far. Can't do cuts on my phone so will be a big wall of text.

I'm really happy with everything I got to do, especially because I got to spend time with my friends. It was my goal to make this trip into a mini vacation despite interviews and the stress of travel and that goal was a success.

I kind of want to write a post later on about me and Ms process of getting back together because it was complex and very significant to me, but that's for a later time.

Monday: although I was with my mom, it was the first time I got to take care of a lot of travel details on my own. It was tedious, but I feel a lot more confident doing it on my own next trip. I was planning on preparing for interviews and relaxing when I got back to the hotel, but I decided to make an impromptu trip to meet up with H that night. That ended up being a great decision for a lot of reasons. I got to drive through the city alone at night while blasting music, which helped me feel more comfortable with the area and more confident being in a new place. I found a few new songs I really liked on xm radio, which was nice because I've never had xm radio and it's really exciting to me LOL. Second, I got to meet H and drive him around and buy him a London fog latte from Starbucks. It was really natural and casual which made me really happy. I never had any doubts about our friendship but it just confirmed that our friendship irl was pretty much exactly the way it is online, just a little more "real" now. And it's weird to think that if I do end up in LA we can hang out all the time, and if I don't then these few weeks will just remain a fond memory.

Tuesday: open house and interview #1. I would give the site a B in terms of fit. Pretty high level of anxiety, hard to fall asleep etc, as is typical for the first time doing anything. Great program but not exactly what I'm looking for. Glad their interview was my first one because it helped me prepare for the rest. After a certain point of preparation, you just can't prepare for these things anymore. I was trying to remember everything I wanted to say but didn't get to say everything I wanted to say. So after this interview I thought, fuck it. I'm good enough to do well at any of these sites so I'll end up wherever I'll end up.

Wed: hung out with H and L. I think I will always cherish this day. Hung out with H at the mall for a bit to prep for interviews, he bought me a caramel americano from coffee bean and tea leaf (delicious!), and then we hung out at the tesla superchargers for awhile. Tesla has a really nice community in SoCal- so many people came up and asked h about his car I lost count and they were all really friendly. Also I'm convinced tesla is the future, everything is just amazing about his car. Hahaha :) then we met up with L at kbbq. As expected, the interaction was easy and pleasant. I was really really happy to spend time with both of them since I've known them for almost 3 years at this point; it still feels a bit surreal that it finally happened after all the times we joked about meeting up and eating together. L got me some under eye masks to help with my dark circles <3 and we found out we couldnt eat very much for all you can eat since we only ate 3 rounds. But it was delicious and we went to get strawberry bingsu. We did h's hair at the bingsu place which was highly entertaining. And then L had to go and i had an inner conflict about whether to get Taiyaki too. I figured I wouldn't have another chance for a long time so h bought Taiyaki for me :D it was delicious and colorful and made me very haps and very cold. Overall, a very very happy day ^___^ @floflogotmojo

Thurs: interview 2 - a wtf kind of interview, but in a good way. Went to see the view by the beach and then got the best udon of my life with H spontaneously later that day. We also went to a Japanese store and H bought me melty chocolates and a cream bun. :D :D

Friday: open house 2 to correspond with interview 2. Liked the work environment way better than place 1, but still didn't have a lot of opportunities for integrated care. I would give the site an A - S for work environment and B for fit of training oppprtunties. One of my previous mentors/cotherapists is part of the current intern cohort which makes me like the place even more since I fit well with her. She invited me to drinks (that I had to decline bc of schedule conflict), which made me feel very warm and welcomed. Hung out with R in downtown LA after that. I accidentally routed to the wrong place with the exact same street name so I was 45 minutes late. We picked up some pastries and drinks and went to chat in the open mall area. It made me happy that r planned everything, I just got to walk around and enjoy the sights and environment without anxiety. Talking with R was more or less just like how we talk online. Very comfortable interaction and made me feel like our friendship has a lot of potential. I like the big sister/little brother dynamic. He treated me to sundubu and then took us to overlook the city at Griffith. Good eats and good views :) it's really nice being around a happy go lucky, open minded, and accommodating enfp; in a lot of way R is similar to my mom. I pay a lot more attention to these things now because I've become more critical and analytical about my relationships. Anyways, another happy memory made.

Saturday: I decided to spend the day with my mom. We talked a lot about family relationships and about our difficulties with communication. I think it brought us closer and was very needed. I also watched a lot of Chinese drama because I need to keep brushing up on Chinese for my interview in 2 weeks...

Overall I think 2018 will be the year of boldly growing into new experiences and culling/strengthening friendships. I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to experience so many new and happy things in the very first week of the year. To many more good memories and opportunities for growth! :)

No more muzzling my words

OK, so I’m just going to say it.  There are times when this really stinks.  And it actually feels good to give myself permission to admit that.  

One of my favorite novelists, Anne Patchett, author of Bel Canto, also wrote a memoir called Truth & Beauty about her lifelong best friendship with someone who struggled with cancer since childhood.  What I remember most is her friend’s very unusual way of enduring horrific hardships that included having her jaw surgically removed, (no less in the middle of self-conscious adolescence).  To feel better about her own situation, she would regularly re-read The Diary of Anne Frank in a sort of schadenfreude effort to remember that there were people who’d had it far worse than herself.    However, these contrived gestures only took her so far.

I guess the truth is, there is only so much glass-half-full thinking any of us can exercise.  Realizing this, I was relieved to hear Brene Brown’s recent podcast about Comparitive Suffering,

Here, she recognizes that while the daily news barrages us with crises much greater than our own (lost jobs, health, and even loved ones), many of us feel guilty for bemoaning our own losses at this time, because we think we should be grateful for what we have.  Certainly, this universal suffering has allowed us to gain some clearer perspective on our lives and our blessings.  And the fact that the entire world is experiencing some similar aspects of this reality has enabled us to build real global empathy.  However, it is also true that each micro-loss deserves its own relative mouring period.  So, I am going to give myself a little license to acknowledge what I am grieving at this time.  But I wanted to find a creative way to do this.  So, I am going to write a love letter to the time before COVID, identifying the things I truly miss. This idea came out of an exercise we led with my non-profit’s Women Rock group.  They are co-writing songs to express the myriad of feelings they are having during this period. In one song, they plan to write about the solace that nature brings them right now.  But they also want a vehicle to communicate their challenges.  In other words, they want somewhere to “deposit the negative,” because this can actually be very healing: to name what’s wrong, genuinely feel the impact of it in your life, and then let it go.  The etymological root of the word de-posit means to put (poner), away (-de).   Ironically, this is similar to the origin of the word positive, which is to formally lay down (or to state absolutely).   So, perhaps by absoluting stating what we feel bad about, we leave room to feel good about what’s left.

But in case this is just a little too sad for some people to read, try imagining the theme song to Jimmy Fallon’s regular Thank You Notes segment, for a bit of comic relief while you read.  Here he is in his At-Home Edition, writing some with his daughters:

Vancouver Mural Festival on Main St 

Dear pre-COVID days,

I remember how good it felt to walk down Main St and hug everyone from my neighbor, to my colleague, to the barista.  You were so open in the way you invited human touch on a daily basis.

I was so grateful that you allowed me the opportunity to interact with people from all different walks of life.  You let me work in so many different environments, from elementary schools, to prisons, to seniors centres, where I was privileged to hear people’s stories as they found their own creative voices.  

I loved being free to spend time with my family even though they live far away. You made it possible to see my parents in Arizona, and my brother in NY, and my uncle in Colorado, and my in-laws in Ontario, every year, despite the distance.

I enjoyed all of the opportunities you gave me to experience live art.  You animated my world and made it technicolor, with concerts, dance clubs, galleries, theatre performances, and different arts festivals every week.

I loved how healthy I felt running around the tennis courts at Queen Elizabeth Park.  You made it so easy to exercise my lungs, my legs, my arms, my focus, my flexibility and my stamina all at the same time.  

I felt so much passion for the adventures that you brought me to.  You generously satisfied my infinite curiosities with music projects in Zambia, and holidays in Hawaii, and cultural immersions in Guatemala.  

I miss all of the the ways you let me love and live and work and play freely.  And I long for the day you return,

Earth Day in Isolation

I am hardly the first to note that while this virus has taken so much from mankind, it has also given Mother Earth the long-awaited rest she so deserves.  There have been plenty of photos of Himalayan mountain tops viewed from Indian cities for the first time in decades, or Orcas returning to Vancouver’s shores to prove this.    

In another gift to our planet, appropriately on Earth Day here in BC, where it has oddly not rained for 30 days, it appears that Gaia is being showered with much needed rain for her day of celebration.  And even a sun-worshipper like me has been doing rain dances lately, to ensure that our city will not be shrouded in smoke from a fire-ravaged province, as we have been for the past two summers.

On a different note, a more distorted personification of nature has been touted by many a cynical observer in recent weeks, citing Covid as retribution against humans from a vengeful Mother Earth. I do not subscribe to such punitive thinking.  But I do believe there are environmental lessons to be learned from this crisis if we listen closely enough.

Writer Kristin Flyntz makes this point more beautifully than I ever could, in her Greatful Web post: https://www.gratefulweb.com/articles/imagined-letter-covid-19-humans  Here, instead of a love letter to pre-Covid days, she has imagined the letter that Covid might write to humans.  The tone is intentional and generous but also insistent.   It is spoken as if from a friend not an enemy.  And it proposes that we ask the hard questions:  “As the health of a tree, a river, the sky tells you about the quality of your own health, what might the quality of your health tell you about the health of the rivers, the trees, the sky, and all of us who share this planet with you?”

Another letter, falsely attributed to Bill Gates, whose proven himself to be a true leader of responsiveness in this critical time, also had similar things to say.  The anonymous writer claims that this time: “is reminding us that this Earth is sick. It is reminding us that we need to look at the rate of deforestation just as urgently as we look at the speed at which toilet rolls are disappearing off of shelves. We are sick because our home is sick.”

from a young age, jaeun had always been an ambitious person with big goals and dreams for the future. she was the valedictorian of her class, and practically involved in almost every club when she was in high school. being a very pristine and organized person, she basically had her entire life mapped out and expected nothing short of the future and life she envisioned for herself. however, discovering that she was pregnant with kaia at the age of 24 was something she did not foresee, and completely took these plans of hers off the rails. instead of preparing to take her picture for top 100 successful women in america like she wished to one day, she was instead buying baby clothes and busy building a nursery. although being pregnant was a box that was never on her to-do list, she and minhyun welcomed kaia happily into the world with open arms nonetheless. instead of making plans for herself, she started to imagine and plan out a future for her newborn daughter. for the first few years of kaia’s life, they were a happily family. jaeun was a good mother, despite being so controlling over kaia’s life at times. due to how kaia was her first and only child, jaeun focused all of her attention on kaia and started attempting to train her as a mini jaeun. she signed kaia up for things such as ballroom dancing, piano lessons, swimming, and practically almost anything she believed would turn kaia into a well-rounded, obedient kid and would look fitting on her resume. but kaia was almost the completely opposite of jaeun—even as a kid, it was like trying to put a tutu on a dog and trying to get it to dance ballet. naturally, their relationship would consist a lot of a mini kaia arguing with her mom because of this and refusing to follow the expectations her mom wanted. whenever jaeun told kaia she couldn’t have or do something, kaia did it anyways and would always manage to find a way to get to it without jaeun’s help. due to this, most of these lessons and activities never lasted more than a few years. despite how often jaeun would try to helicopter kaia’s life, there were memories and moments that kept their relationship warm and loving at times, such as when the two would go out for ice cream after her swim meets. around the time kaia was in middle school, jaeun and minhyun’s relationship started to fall apart. they were never a perfect match, but over the years this flaw slowly became more evident as their chemistry diminished and their sparks died out. they had been best friends turned lovers, which was why kaia was so infatuated with their relationship and the idea of love. however, with the arguments that just built up over the next few years and how distant the two parents had become with each other—kaia wasn’t necessarily surprised when they sat her down one day and told her that they were divorcing. kaia was actually relieved in a way, but it still didn’t hurt any less to know that the same two people she had looked up to for so long were divorcing.

after the divorce, it was like every flaw and negative characteristic of jaeun had intensified and kicked up a notch. although she was always a helicopter mom, it was almost like all of the warmth and good parts of their relationship had disappeared after she re-married. with her new marriage into a financially more well-off family, she started to care much more about her as well as her family’s own image. because of their new wealthy business family, jaeun wanted kaia to became a daughter she could be proud of—a daughter she could present to young heirs from other families and marry off. while she wanted kaia to wear expensive gucci skirts and button-ups, kaia always opted for ripped jeans and a graphic tee. jaeun would try ten times harder to change kaia and get her to be exactly the way she wanted her—the perfect, intelligent, clean-cut, debutante princess. and as a result of this, kaia only pushed her mom further away and only became angrier at her. she slowly started to give up on maintaining the relationship she once had with her mom, since it seemed like all her mom cared about now was money and the image of a perfect, upper-class family. kaia hated how jaeun had taken a full 180 and how meanwhile she continued to act nice and an actual mom to her new step-kids, she continued to treat kaia more like a pet or a business associate rather than an actual daughter. her rocky relationship with her mom caused kaia to act out in numerous ways for many years from high school to college. after graduating from high school and getting the opportunity to move away and start a new life at penn state, she cut off her relationship with her mom and also gave up the money her mom would send her as a result, not wanting to owe anything to her mom or give jaeun something else to hold over her head. now, kaia only ever really talks to jaeun or meets up with her during the holidays, like christmas and thanksgiving due to how she continues to ignore her mom’s many attempts of contact.

✧ minhyun lim ( 46 ) - father

between jaeun and minhyun, kaia was always closer to minhyun. he was the nicer and more understanding one of the two, and from a young age she had always been daddy’s little girl. because it was jaeun who wore the pants of the relationship, minhyun always followed under her lead. despite this, he was able to show his support for kaia through the little things. when jaeun put the cookie jar away up in a high cabinet and locked it, it was minhyun who would intentionally leave the key out for kaia to find and grab with her small chubby little hands. he would watch quietly with a chuckle as she grabbed chairs for herself and climbed onto the counter to unlock the cabinet and eat all of the cookies, even when her mom told her not to and clearly scolded her many times. when little kaia would get in trouble for drawing on the walls constantly, it was minhyun who decided to paint one wall of her room with chalkboard paint to allow her to draw and scribble on the wall to her heart’s content, despite jaeun complaining about how the one black wall completely ruined the interior of the house. on the contrary of what most people would think, jaeun and minhyun were a very good match in the beginning—she was uptight and criticized about many things, but he balanced that out with his laidbackness and rationality. with the birth of kaia, it only strengthened their relationship and made them even happier. although most of her time as a kid was spent with jaeun, due to how the woman constantly took control of her life and focused solely on her, kaia still spent a good amount of time with minhyun as well. while jaeun was the one who would upset little kaia and would get into arguments with her over the smallest things, it was minhyun who would break up the argument as if he was the only parent and both of them were children. as a kid, jaeun was the villain but kaia always saw minhyun as her hero who always knew how to make her feel better. one of the hardest parts of the divorce for kaia was knowing that she wouldn’t be able to see her dad as much and having to wonder how their life would be without him in it everyday. after the divorce, minhyun was the first to remarry between the two parents and eventually found someone else. their new family consists of a step-daughter (ava) who is now 14, and an 8 year old son (lucas) that he had with his new wife. although it was a bit awkward in the beginning, kaia started to warm up to his new family and the new life he had embraced. she doesn’t get to see minhyun as much as she would like, but she continues to visit him during holidays such as thanksgiving and christmas as well. due to how she is not as close to jaeun and has cut off any relationship with her mom, kaia wants to reach out to minhyun and try to spend more time with him but feels as if she’ll be intruding his new life and his newfound happiness. so for now, she doesn’t want to change things and thinks it’ll be better to leave things as they are and only see him a couple times a year.

✧ dohyun byun ( 50 ) - step-father

kaia’s relationship with dohyun isn’t very complicated. she doesn’t like him, but she doesn’t hate or have as strong grudge against him. if it hadn’t been for the fact that dohyun’s previous marriage ended due to his infidelity, kaia wouldn’t be as harsh on him but this fact makes it hard for her to completely trust him. she believes that if he cheated once before, the chances of this new marriage crumbling because of the same mistake he might commit are very high. she doesn’t necessarily interact with him much and likes to mind her own business and avoid any one-on-one conversations with him due to how awkward they usually are. whenever they do talk, it’s just small-talk that dohyun tries to make in an attempt to get closer to his step-daughter but she refuses to get close to him or really open up to him. their relationship is strained, but kaia no longer purposely ignores him like she had in the beginning. similar to how he spoils katrine, he attempts to do the same for kaia but she just brushes off his efforts. although it is jaeun who puts all of the pressure on kaia to get married off to some rich heir and to be a presentable daughter, she feels like some of that pressure to be a perfect and clean-cut daughter comes from dohyun as well.

✧ katrine byun ( 17 ) - step-sister

kaia sees katrine as one of the only good things to have come out of her mother’s new marriage. although her relationship with nathan isn’t particularly great, her relationship with katrine is. the two are very similar in personalities and upon first meeting each other, they automatically clicked. because kaia was an only child, she had always wanted a sister to talk to or do things with so when katrine came into her life, it was like fate. together the two are a troublesome duo, and as a result of their names they call themselves the “2k.” with katrine around, kaia feels less lonely and is a lot more okay with her mom’s remarriage as a result. although adjusting initially was hard, having katrine as a step-sister definitely made things a lot easier for her. because of katrine’s fallen relationship with nathan and kaia’s similar situation, the two pull pranks on nathan all the time and never allows him rest. because kaia and nathan went to high school together as well, whenever she came home from school she would just gossip with katrine and spill all of the tea on him, talking about things like how he got yelled at by the teachers at school again that day or ended up in the assistant principal’s office. because katrine is only a few years younger than kaia, she would give katrine advice (usually bad) and the two would spend so much time together talking about everything in their room. after kaia started college at penn state, katrine and kaia definitely didn’t get to see each other as much but the two continues to keep in touch often through texts and video calls. when they reunite every year during the holidays, it’s usually very chaotic but always a fun time for the both of them.

✧ nathan byun ( 22 ) - step-brother

these two really don’t ever get along and to the public eye, may seem like they absolutely hate each other. however, this isn’t the complete truth. although kaia and nathan do have their fair share of arguments, which usually consist of them making fun of each other (like kaia does with his big ears) or making threats to expose the other’s love life to the family, kaia deep down does care more about her step-brother than she’d care to admit. the beginning stages and first few years after the remarriage were a struggle and rough since the two wanted nothing to do with each other and their new families. they would have to deal with seeing each other everyday, both at home and at school. as much as they would try to avoid the other during school, they eventually winded up meeting in detention anyways. this would result in the supervisor having to separate the two because they would always end up in an argument, probably isolating kaia to the corner of a room and the two teaming up just to try and scheme their way out of detention together. it’s no surprise that these two are nosy and would always try to get the dirt on one another, no matter what it took. however, once the two started college together and started living in the comfort of their own residency—kaia didn’t get to see nathan around as much. she would only see him a couple of times on campus every now and then, and when she would, she would usually follow him quietly just to try and see what he’s been up to as well as get some dirt on him to spill to katrine later that day. she went through many lengths to keep an eye on him since she could no longer do it the way she did back in high school, even going as far as stealing a mascot costume and dressing up just to get close to him during one of his games. so although they don’t get along much, they’re a lot more similar in more ways than one than they’ll ever realize.

✧ teagan rosales ( 21 ) - soul sister

teagan is kaia’s rock and has been the only constant in her life since they first met in the second grade. with both of them being a little wild and crazy, they compliment each other well and it’s no surprise that their friendship has been strong for this long. before the divorce, kaia was an only child but she never completely felt like one due to how teagan was always attached to her hip. the two were completely inseparable, and as they grew closer it was as if teagan’s family had become kaia’s as well. she grew close to not only teagan but her siblings and growing up, it helped to have someone such as teagan to help bring the adventure and fun to her life when her mom wanted nothing but order and class. teagan was like the sister kaia had and around her, kaia felt like she could truly be accepted as herself and not wanted to change into anything or anyone else. she would spend countless sleepovers at teagan’s house during the years of the divorce, when things were falling apart between her two parents and she didn’t want to deal with the drama of it all. they were in middle school at the time, but kaia would never ask her parents for permission and would just sneak out in the middle of the night to go to teagan’s house and spend the night there. her mom would wake up confused and panicked for the first few times, naturally scolding kaia every time she did it but afterwards, jaeun no longer became surprised at the sight of an empty bed and calling teagan’s mom to discover that kaia had spent yet another night there. they carpooled often together during high school and even got their first tattoos together once teagan had turned 18, with a sun tattoo on kaia’s ankle and a matching moon one on teagan’s. the two have been through almost everything together, they’ve seen each other at their worst and have been there for each other through the worst as well. although there was a time during college where kaia felt as if they were getting more distant and weren’t as close as they used to be, their bond remains unbroken and teagan continues to be her one and only soul sister till this day.

Exclusive interview with Luna on her album “P.O.V”

Debuting in 2012 as the maknae of Lipstick, Luna has grown up in front of the nation’s eyes. Lipstick famously started out as BC’s ugly duckling group, initially considered a failure in comparison to their senior groups, but has grown to become one of the most recognized groups in South Korea. As a member of both Lipstick and Lip Gloss, Luna has shown her fans both her sexy and cute sides, but with the release of her solo mini-album, Luna is showing a side entirely her own. We here at Exclusive got to have the first interview with Luna about her mini-album. Read what she had to say below!

You worked with several other idols on this album for features, songwriting, and production. How were those experiences?

Eye Opening. Everyone has a different way to deal with song lyrics, production and composition, very divergent from my own. It was nice to see each way they reach a result from all these talented and diverse artists.

You had a part in writing three songs on the mini-album. Do any of these songs have special meaning to you? Why did you write these songs?

Eclipse is the one I had to challenge myself the most but Dark Clouds is really…meaningful. Because I had to write about something painful and it was purely me, laying all my feelings out, crude and rough just as it is. At first I wanted to challenge myself, to see what were the boundaries of my reaching - but, I as I kept writing more and more I grew found of it. I’m someone that isn’t very vocal about what is troubling me so that is a nice way to wash away my thoughts and bad vibes and restart.

Although you have gotten to sing some on Lipstick and Lip Gloss songs, you’re mostly known for being a dancer and rapper. Why did you choose to focus on singing for your solo album?

Like the song ‘Eclipse’, it’s something that’ll cover me for a while but it’ll pass. I’m starting to get more mature now and I want to know myself more. I’ve been rapping and dancing since I became a trainee so I want to try new things and deal with disappointments. I don’t know if my singing’ll be accepted by many but if I never tried, I would regret my decisions. Because Lipstick and Lipgloss have great vocalists it’s hard for my voice - that is more frail and not very strong - to stand out among the other girls but I hope it gets a little of shine when I’m on my own. Please give my support because I’m trying to get better each day!

You choreographed the dance for “Yes, No, Maybe”. Do you think we’ll see more of your choreography in the future?

“Yes, No, Maybe” was written by a good friend of mine and because I know him very well, I didn’t want just any kind of choreography. I wanted to portray the feelings of the lyrics as much as I could. And I think that if I ever feel the same way I felt when listening to the song, I might choreograph again.

How does it feel to be the first member of your group to release a solo album?

Scary. I feel very scared because of the judgement and the critics but not only that but I don’t want to bring any bad reactions towards my group or the unnies.

Did you have any major inspirations for this album?

My mom, my friends, my family, fans…and me. Each one had a small influence on this album, I like to think that it’s more like a gigantic collab with many others rather then a solo album because I truly couldn’t have finished without them!

What do you hope people take away from listening to this album?

That people are more then what they can see. We are not two dimensional beings, we have layers upon layers of whom we are and what we feel. That there isn’t only a black and white to things.

Do you have any other comments you’d like to make to your fans?

I’m sorry if this isn’t what you guys expected but please support me and wish me luck on this new path I’m going with! This is the album where I opened myself the most - and also other idols and artists - laid our emotions bare, for everyone to see. Give it a try, each song here was made to have a feeling and a vibe, it has a meaning behind it! And thank you vanities for all the support and well wishes and I hope I’m not disappointing you guys!

mfgnjgfmdgfd omg… in my whole 20 years of living….. no one has ever asked me to talk about seohyun :’( i really just hold it in or let out bursts to people who really dont care jfdkslmfds this might be my most incoherent love post yet because this has been stewing in me for almost five? years? but i’ll give it a shot :-(

first of all i think it’s important to say that? seohyun is one of the people i’ve loved and looked up to the longest? like im really in awe thinking that i’ve loved her for almost five years now that’s a long time especially considering i wasn’t even Involved in the fandom for most of it like i was really just out there living my life but quietly loving her and honestly that’s still a bit how i feel like i just want her to quietly hold my heart forever? when i first got into snsd (and seohyun) i mostly got to know her through the early early stuff like 2007-2011 era shows which is such a different person than seohyun today but still the same heart? and i love every side of her who she is and who she was like.. im hesitant to rewatch old stuff anymore because it makes me emotional thinking of how much she’s grown and how much happier and more comfortable she is now but also of how much i related to the younger her and how proud i am of her? i always Always feel weird talking about idols this intensely because im not sure how much i project onto them but i really think she’s super strong like i can’t imagine being in her place from debut and through the first few years especially…. :( anyway im not gonna get emo about that jfdjmfdfds but one thing i have Always always loved so much about her is how completely unapologetic she has always been about being herself? like she has(had?) a relatively quiet and almost demure personality but she was never ashamed of her personality or unwilling to stand up for herself even when others would tease her for not being the typical ~idol~ type or for her interests or even just like.. when she didn’t have an interest in boys jfdmsfds she was never ashamed of anything and she’s so strong in her values and that’s one thing i always admired a lot about her and i still do.. how she’s comfortable and happy being herself, dancing crazily to shake it? and being able to stand up for what she wants to do, how with her solo they told her they had a certain image in mind for her but she refused to even do her solo if it wasn’t going to be her vision and the concept she wanted? i have so much respect for her it’s something that’s never changed since debut she’s always but stubborn but in a way that makes her really strong!!

ok and another thing i really have always respected about her is her hard work and dedication into Everything? she’s so mature and talented in so many areas but especially lately i’ve been so proud of her as an actress like.. she faced A Lot of criticism in the past but she just keeps working harder and every time she does a new work she receives so much new praise and i can’t wait to see her future in acting? im a fake and ihaven’t been keeping up well with bad thief good thief but she’s really been doing such a good job and it makes me feel so proud seeing all the positive reviews from outside the fandom.. i feel like im deviating fjdskfds but like i just remember when she used to receive a lot of criticism but instead of just being sad about it she took it as motivation to work harder and do better… :-( that’s such a hard thing to do but im so proud of how much she’s advanced already and seein ghow much she loves it and how she’s able to bond with the staff and coactors makes me feel so proud and happie :-( and im just talking about acting because it’s the most relevant right nwo but this goes into everything like her soloist activities and also the songwriting… how she was rejected so many times on previous albums and she was rightfully upset about it but she jsut used that as fuel to work Harder and put out an almost entirely self-written first mini album…. Queen of hard work and never giving up and always Always staying true to herself!
