i've been going back and listening to albums from child/teenhood lately and remembering how badly i want to make music and what kind of music has inspired me over the years

i especially love the narratives over albums like The Antler's Hospice or Daft Punk's Discovery (very different sides of my music taste) and how clear it carries over every song on each of the albums. the lyrics from some of the songs on Hospice too are just so beautifully written and after relistening again it's got me itching to try writing again so who knows maybe all my comics going forward won't be wordless (though i still love my wordless comics). i like how honest the songs feel, how brutal and still loving the way theyre written is.

Let me explain and see if I make sense. For a long time, when people thought of the maknae line, no matter the order in which they ranked Tae and Kookie, Jimin was always the third one. Too many posts relegating him to the role of cheerleader and not much else. I saw posts before solo works commenced dismissing the idea that Jimin would ever release an album but would instead fully support the others. Well, he not only released two solo albums, but was also a composer, lyricist among other things, so they can take their opinion and smoke it.

When the solo era started, people had different expectations for what every maknae members would achieve but no matter the expectations, those for Jimin were that he would be third. Bronze medalist if you will.

FACE was released, Like Crazy got to number 1 and I logged off twitter. We were in hell particularly when it went from 1 to 45 after Billboard deleted over 100k sales and changed the rules (thank you Travis Scott for freeing Jimin and finally taking that number 1 spot). The hate from outside was expected, it was when it came from within the fandom that it hurt.

Fast forward to MUSE and it got worse. Sprinkle in a dash of Are You Sure and we have

Here I have a list of things I have noticed

1. An increase in the number of people talking about how they hate PJMs and how they are making them turn against Jimin. Honey, if a solo can make you dislike one member, you aren't sh*t anyway.

2. Dislike for Jimin disguised as dislike for his solos. If you haven't seen it, consider yourself lucky.

3. How sometimes ARMY came in droves when a member didn't achieve something but Jimin did. For example Spotify US. When a new song failed to enter but Jimin's songs increased ( during both LC and Who era).

4. His long run on the hot 100 has really revealed people's true colours. It's not his fault. Blame the fandom for their clear bias.

5. The number of ARMY accounts on X low key calling AYS fanservice.

6. Discourse on Jimin's ability to sing. I don't argue with stupid people.

I could go on and on but what I am trying to say is that in a perfect world, it would be wonderful if all the members had the same support from ARMY. The discrepancy needs to be addressed (caused by a multitude of reasons) but making it a member's fault and not the fandom is asinine.

I used to be a 1D fan and my favourite member to date is the least favourite and successful, Louis Tomlinson but that doesn't mean I hate on Harry, Zayn or Niall for their success. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

What prompted this you may ask? I saw a post talking about Jimin being the company and fandom fave and having special support. Like huh?

All in all what I am trying to say is that Jimin really shook things up and some people resent him for it. That one post (article?) about Jimin bringing out either admiration or envy keeps getting proven right.

Yourusername Triple surprise! After writing folklore (and red) I just couldn’t stop. So I didn’t. And this is what came from that. The sister album of Folklore; Evermore! This is again an album of tales that I have made up in my head, but there are also a few songs that are very close to my hard. One for example being Marjorie, this song is about my grandmother that has sadly passed away, and the song explains the rest. This album is very close ego my hard. Yourusername I am very bittersweet to announce that this will be my last season in Formula 1. While I am very happy that I have gotten this opportunity, and while I still really enjoy it. I think it is time for me to step off. I know I am still considering young(with being 24) but with my other hobby’s and career I have devoted that it would smartest if I focus on my music career. I will finish this season(hopefully with a championship) and then I will retire. I which the best of luck to the team and to Charles and for my replacement for the next year. Thank you all for the support and I love you all❤️

tales from february <3

hello witches!

i’ve been on some adventures since we last spoke, but i just got back to my little london flat and felt the urge to sit on my sofa, make myself a cup of tea and update you all on my travels.

i don’t think i’ve gone this long without playing a show for you guys in quite some time, and i’m definitely missing feeling so connected to you all! however, i also think its been so good for me to get a little distance from maisie the singer, and be maisie the friend/ sister/ daughter/ girlfriend/ human person for a little while, and i’ve really been enjoying keeping a little more of myself to myself. i grew up online, having a youtube channel from the age of 15, so letting people into my life has always felt somewhat normal, if anything, exciting and interesting and empowering. i remember moving into my first proper london house share (girls house for the girls who get it) and feeling so thrilled at the idea of showing you all the terrible meals i was making, my desperate attempt at decorating the place from the awful red sofas we dragged off the street to the budget fairy lights strung from every available fixture. it was as coming of age as anything will ever be, and i have such fond memories of baking cookies in the kitchen with the girls and filming every single minute of it, so convinced it was interesting and important. and it was, interesting and important. all girlhood is.

if you were around back then, you will remember the release parties, the baking sagas, the nights out, the secret language exposés i used to film. i loved doing it, but i think over the last few years, there’s been a direct correlation in how the more i started sharing of myself in my music, the less i wanted to share of myself through social media. my second album was a real turning point in how i wrote music – it had always been fairly autobiographical, but there was always a liberal dose of fantasy/ fiction mixed in too. i grew up writing constantly, which required an unending pool of inspiration, so i got good at putting myself within other universes and writing inside other people’s shoes. the music i made during my teenage years was full of the melting of the real and unreal, and truly only i will ever know what was what! however i think i hit my early twenties, went through a couple heartbreaks, and discovered the true utter joy in putting my life into forever song. the chronicling means that what was once a fleeting memory, can become something permanent, something lasting, something important, which was all i ever really wanted. the good witch was a pure version of this, a breakup and a year of my young adult life distilled into 15 songs that i’m still ferociously proud of, and now consider the benchmark for the amount of honest i want to give you guys; my next album, title *redacted*, i hope will continue that.

anyway, in conclusion, i feel that i have withdrawn a little the last couple months, and i guess i wanted to talk about why. i think whilst i’ve been in the thick of writing this album, i needed some space and time to get to that honest part of myself, so whilst i might not have been on your screens, rest assured i have been working everyday on getting back to them! full transparency in my writing for me requires a cocoon like energy in my day to day, but i hope when the music comes out you feel it is worth it. i’m working on secret plans all the time, all with the intention of letting you guys know the real me, as increasingly – and without being cringe and earnest – that is my favourite maisie peters, and the one that i want to share the most.

in other news! i went to america! two slightly rainy, intense, formative weeks in la working on the album, and four sickly days in nashville where i meant to go to let loose and have fun, and ended up just getting deathly ill and mostly sleeping on cate’s bathroom floor! let’s start with la…

for all my deep englishness, i do find la charming – it might be all the joan and eve i’ve consumed (like every sensible 21 year old girl should), but i do love it’s shabby glamour, its beautiful light, its ridiculousness. the music there is also just so good, as it always has been, and although i find its energy intense, and the lack of ability to walk downright evil, i do think that as a music city you can’t find many better. this was a real two week dedicated block to make movement on the album in its final stretch – and i think i did it! that doesn’t mean it always felt easy and obvious (real progress maybe never does feel like this whilst you’re in the thick of the progress itself, something i’m learning), so i’m grateful to that time for teaching me a lot, and to the people i worked with out there who also played a massive hand in that. time will tell what that trip means for the record, but it was a deeply educational, inspiring time in eagle rock and west hollywood, and if i could tell me at 14 what i was up to there, she’d probably fall over. in a good way.

nashville was as i said, mostly full of puking, so i’ll leave to your imagination. however, it was amazing to be back with roommate cate who lives out there and who i miss dearly – life has changed so much for both of us, and whilst i wish i could still knock on her bedroom door and ask her if she wants to have gnocchi for dinner, i know she is thriving in the wild west, and it is the most fun getting to visit her. even if all we did was go to costco, watch matthew mcconnoughey films and gossip, it was still one of my favourite trips yet. i didnt watch the superbowl due to severe nausea, but maybe the real superbowl was the friendship we made along the way. puke.

since being home, i’ve been to one hot yoga class i actually enjoyed (!!), been on a valentines date night for the first time in my life (!!), bought a matching smeg baby pink toaster and kettle (the most happiness i have felt since heelys as a child), started making tentative album track listings (!!), and waltzed my way through london’s freezing temperatures. i love being home, i love this city, i love my life here, and sitting on the sofa writing this mailer, listening to the washing machine hum makes me feel so grateful for all the little things. it is, and will always be, the greatest privilege of my life getting to play my music for a living, but it has also been the biggest treat getting to make a life i love that’s not on four wheels. however, i am still a road dog at heart, and being at home has me daydreaming of playing shows again; picturing the setlists and the stages and the memories together, and i’m itching to get going. the thought of having a whole new universe for us to throw ourselves into has me grinning ear to ear, and i hope that it can be sooner rather than later.

lets wrap this up with some recommendations as per usual, and then i shall have to love you and leave you :’)

in la i went to a thai restaurant called the night market numerous times, and the coffee shop coffee memes, both in silverlake. silly name for the latter, but wonderful vibes and i highly recommend both

i devoured on all fours by miranda july. DEVOURED. one of my favourite reads in recent history, and it has truly stuck with me in a way that not many things do

those dishmatic sponges for washing up, we just restocked and for those girls who like a frequent clean (it is me, i am those girls) these things really do the lords work

those little chocolate chip cookies from trader joes in the tub, i brought some back with me and everyone who had one asked what drugs were inside them. true story

My TimeBomb Playlist!

(inspired by @tcx11 )

This playlist generally reflects my personal flavour of TimeBomb which is a bit softer, kinder, a lot of Modern AU. A world where they can be together and their biggest worries are not war, oppression, or terrorism, but smaller, more interpersonal issues, their insecurities stemming from wanting to be good for each other and with each other. A dream of another world.

Laura's Theme by Nathan Johnson (this felt like a good opener to the playlist, sort of cutting to the softer, more sentimental side of both characters which is what I personally appreciate about TimeBomb)

Self Love by Metro Boomin and Coy Leray (the whole SpiderVerse soundtrack has a great TimeBomb sound and feel to it so that's a given, but for me Self Love once again touches upon that softer side the couple, they both want to reach out to each other and be kids again, when they were friends and didn't have to fight each other.)

Blue by PinkPantheress (Heaven Knows as an album very much suits my TB aesthetic, Blue works partly because of the title and also because the lyrics touch upon the giggling/kicking her feet feel that Jinx feels about Ekko and the insecurities that she may not be good enough for him.)

Calling by Metro Boomin and Swae Lee with NAV & A Boogie wit Da Hoodie (Again, SpiderVerse IS peak TimeBomb, and Calling is a track that can reflect Ekko's anxieties of reaching out to Jinx and having his ever-persisting love for her be fully perceived and felt by her.)

Favorite Song by Honey Revenge (some pop punk was absolutely necessary and I'm choosing to include one of my favourite songs (lol) by one of my current favourite bands. Their sound is kind of like what a high school/battle of the bands AU Jinx might come up with, and this song is Jinx expressing her love for Ekko in the only way she'd know how: by writing a song about how annoying it is that he's all she ever thinks about.)

Murphy's Law by Honey Revenge (all of HR's debut album RetroVision could be on this playlist but again, I want to be a bit selective. With a title like Murphy's Law, this song is literally about a Jinx. Maybe Jinx wrote this song about herself and her insecurities ("What's the worst thing that could happen? Anything you'd imagine!"))

Bad Habit by Steve Lacy (this song feels sunkissed and I like imagining them hanging out on a nice summer's day. Also I heard this on an edit and I was like "so true bestie." And yeah the lyrics, I wish you'd known she wanted you too, Ekko.)

One Last Kiss by Hikaru Utada (I don't know that I can adequately explain this, the vibes are sweet and there's a sweeping sense of love to it, but there's also an interplay of my appreciation of Evangelion and Kingdom Hearts going on, especially the final scene of Thrice Upon a Time and how a similar context can be applied to Jinx and Ekko freeing each other can be applied. All I can say is, I hope you see the vision too.)

Let Me Love You by Mario (I appreciate that this could be the most out of place song in the playlist but tbh I loved this song when I was a kid, I liked how it was kind of melancholy in the way all our favourite fics are and I liked the idea of a straightforward appeal from Ekko to Jinx to let herself be open to him because he knows he can provide for her after the world of hurt she's gone through. I don't think Ekko would be so direct but I think in a happier world, he would have a seductive RnB beat in his soul.)

TELEKINESIS by Travis Scott (feat. SZA and Future) (alright so maybe this is the most out of place one on this playlist, I suppose this is kind of the closest I'll get to toxic TimeBomb? But I can interpret it as Jinx's insecurities manifesting in toxic ways. For me there's a lot of vibes here that again, I just hope you see the vision.)

Differences - Instrumental by Ginuwine (no explanation, just listened to this a lot when I was getting with my girlfriend so why not, throw this one in too)

Otonoke by Crazy Nuts (you're so right, Jinx and Ekko WOULD get into ghost hunting in high school and land themselves into more trouble than they asked for!)

Come and Go by JUICE WRLD with Marshmello (Jinx has a lot of insecurities by Ekko knows he can't let his own issues get in the way of this, because this type of love, this type of compatibility, doesn't always come and go. Also love the high energy production, with the shredding guitars it feels like it crosses over to Jinx's sound and tbh for me this is low-key a theme to SpiderBomb.)

gonna make sure by senses (more pop punk with angsty lyrics, just included it as it randomly came up and thought why not)

Honourable mention: Franco Faux by Tresor Online (obviously after s2e7 TimeBomb has a forever association with French music and language, something I joked about in my interview fic. The production sounds very seductive but what keeps me from including it is that the lyrics are very much French-sounding gibberish, making fun of these sorts of tracks. Maybe Ekko is trying to make Jinx laugh by improvising fake French on the spot? I still enjoy listening to it but it helps that my French understanding is pre-basic at best.)

There's loads of tracks that feel like timebomb that I didn't include but tbh I just wanted this to be more of a personal list, based on my vision. I'm still growing it so may update this list in future. In the meantime, I hope you discovered some new music you enjoy or enjoyed these perspectives on our favourite zaunite royalty!

The Rise and fall of Me recording Oasis

Morning Glory

Again, I’m copying from an interview I gave a few years back. I do come across as disturbingly enthusiastic. Very odd.

Here’s my story about Some Might Say. So we went to Loco Studios to record the master version of Some Might Say sometime at the start of 1995. I was already ensconced there having spent four months recording The Verve’s album A Northern Soul (which I’d gotten because, after finishing Definitely Maybe, Noel had recommended me to his friend Richard Ashcroft).

Here’s the thing. We’d demoed Some Might Say in Maison Rouge six months or so ago: the version from there was slow and heavy and dark…really quite cool in a Rolling Stones way. Then we turn up in Loco, the band set up, we spend the day doing lots of really good, slightly faster than the demo versions of the track. I edit the best bits together: we are happy. Backing track done! Then the rest of the band go to bed, but me and Noel stay up, have a few drinks (oh, inevitably, Brian Cannon was there entertaining us). At some stage in the early hours we listen to the demo and decide that the new version we’d spent the whole day on is too fast. Noel wakes the band up, insists they get out of bed and come and rerecord Some Might Say, but everyone better be fucking careful not to play it too fast.

We do ONE take and decide we’re all fucking geniuses and that we’ve definitely nailed the backing track. Next day, I wake up, hungover and hazy. Liam wants to sing. So Liam sings his lead vocal on Some Might Say in two takes. Fucking on fire singing. Liam goes to pub with Bonehead. Marcus turns up. Listens to it…Marcus goes fucking hell, that singing is incredible, well done boys.

Thing is, the backing track was faster than we’d ever intended, which Noel and I hadn’t noticed when drunk the night before. This backing track had massive problems like a really bad speed up during the first three bars of the first chorus. But we had to fucking use it because Liam’s singing was undeniably brilliant. Basically, a totally incompetent job by me and Noel regarding the backing track as supposedly professional producers. The mix was then a nightmare…I mixed it on three separate occasions, finally putting on all the delays and chaos in an attempt to hide the mistakes.

I still love Some Might Say. It’s one of my favourite Noel songs, and I like the sheer chaos of the recording. The song overcame everything. And it went to number one. The single version was mastered at Abbey Road and sounded appalling. My mastered version of the song for the Morning Glory album is good.

Liam and Noel always liked my mixes. They never had any issues or disagreements about the work I did with them.

Alan was very obviously different from Tony. He was intelligent and articulate and a real musician for a start. I was never a big fan of Alan’s drumming really, even though he played on the most successful recordings I’ve made so far. Alan’s essentially a jazz drummer. He is NOT a rock band drummer. He was always shuffling away on his snare (which actually became the signature rhythm of Wonderwall), and never hitting the basic back beats in a dumb rock and roll way. Also, because Alan’s brother Steve was in Paul Weller’s band, and Paul Weller’s producer employed a “proper engineer”, Alan always thought I wasn’t capturing his true sound (man!). But I always thought Alan never actually hit his drums hard enough or actually understood the basic Oasis sound.

But recording him on Morning Glory was a complete pleasure. He was a professional and Noel enjoyed sitting in the studio with him while Alan did his drum takes and being able to talk musically/part wise to a drummer who could quickly understand and then actually play what Noel was imagining. So, ultimately, certainly for the recording of the Morning Gloryalbum, Alan was the right man at the right time.

You see, my memory of this night is that we’d done the first five days recording. We’d recorded Roll With It on day one. Hello on day two. Wonderwall on day three. Don’t Look Back in Anger on day four. Champagne Supernova on day five. Day five was the Friday and that’s the night that Noel, me and Brian Cannon stayed in the control room at Rockfield and had a few drinks for my birthday, and listened back to the week’s work, while Liam and the rest of the band went into Monmouth for a drink.

I locked up the studio at about one in the morning. The studio was locked up! I went to the accommodation and there were about twenty people I didn’t know there having a party. I went straight to my room and went to bed. I was fucking exhausted.

I slept through the supposed mayhem. I can’t believe and saw no evidence that anyone got into the studio and trashed any of Noel’s guitars. Like I said, the studio was locked up! So I think Noel has exaggerated the story that the people Liam brought back trashed his guitars. In fact, and I might be wrong here, but my feeling is that Noel made up that more dramatic story about “damaged guitars” to gloss over the fact he overreacted and hurt his brother’s feelings.

My take on it was that Noel, probably unkindly, was mean and spiteful to his brother and made a scene of humiliating Liam in front of strangers. Liam had just met a nice girl, Danielle from Monmouth. The story told the next morning was that Noel had said something to Danielle and Liam that upset them. I don’t know if this is true. Then apparently Noel kicks all the people from Monmouth that Liam had invited back. Then apparently Noel and Liam have a stupid drunken fight, and Noel tells Alan to drive him to London as an escape from Liam.

When Noel fucked off, Marcus said we should all have a cooling down period. Take two weeks off. After a while I came back in and tried some mixes of what we’d recorded so far, added some keyboard strings and mucked aimlessly around. Two weeks later Noel decides the session’s back on and everyone turns up on a Monday morning, Liam and Noel have a big hug and nothing more is said.

Then we get on with the same song per day recording pace as before. We do Morning Glory, She’s Electric, Cast No Shadow, Step Out (which didn’t make it to the album) and finally Hey Now! and, for the fun of it, Bonehead’s Bank Holiday. The Swamp Song backing track was from Glasonbury that year – Noel and Paul Weller finished it off when we were mixing in Orinoco.

All of the recording on Morning Glory was easy and fun. Everyone there wanted to be there. Noel would sing a new song to Liam once, and Liam would just instantly go in and do four precisely perfect takes: quite a freaky ability Liam possessed then. Liam was almost scarily in tune with his brother’s songs and words and melodies and phrasing. And the band quickly did their parts and then left Noel and me to do all the overdubs.

The session was the best, easiest, least fraught, most happily creative time I’ve ever had in a recording studio. I honestly believe that the lack of any badness and only good intent and love from everyone involved is a very important part of why Morning Glory is liked by so many people. I believe people can feel and hear when music is dishonest and motivated by the wrong reasons. Morning Glory, for all its imperfection and flaws, is dripping with love and happiness.

Noel knew exactly where he was with his songs. Big choruses that everyone wanted to sing along to. That was fundamentally it.

Paul Weller did an afternoon’s overdubbing in about the third week of mixing at Orinoco studios in Elephant and Castle. I remember being asleep on the sofa, I had Champagne Supernova set up for him to do some guitar solos on. Noel and Paul Weller turned up mid afternoon and Noel had a good laugh at my hangover because he’d heard I’d been up all night being stupid with Brian Cannon. Brian Cannon was Oasis’s and The Verve’s “Sleeve designer/art director/maniac friend”, who on Morning Glory spent more days in the recording studio than anyone else apart from me and Noel. Doing his “research”. Brian is fucking brilliant by the way, and I think his sleeves for Oasis and the Verve are as good as any band artwork ever: very sharp, very funny.

Weller had a white Gibson SG and a Vox AC30 which he just plugged into and had his sound. And he just played half a dozen solos. Then he improvised the whistle on the outro of Champagne Supernova, and improvised the “ooh” backing vocals. Then he played lead guitar on The Swamp Song. Then he did the insane harmonica playing on The Swamp Song. All in about three hours. Him and Noel fucked off by six in the evening. He was a total gentleman and almost disgustingly good at his music. Very very impressive. And his playing was full of soul and humour and total commitment. Noel was like a pig in shit that day.

We all did love Morning Glory and thought we’d done our best and had the best time possible. But Definitely Maybe loomed large. I was worried that it didn’t have the harder guitar sound that everyone loved about Definitely Maybe. All we were truly hoping for was that it would at least sell as many as Definitely Maybe had done at the time (which in the summer of 1995 was 400,000 copies). Marcus was happy and confident though. But no one involved expected the album to capture the people’s imagination like it did.

There was never any drama at any mixing stage. Noel and Liam liked my work and trusted me to choose the best mixes. Marcus and Noel would always have a listen to each mix as it was finished just to check and approve, and I’d always make sure Liam was happy too.

I’m proud of many recordings I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with, but Morning Glory was probably a lucky once in a lifetime experience where every element, everyone and everything came together just right. Fucking brilliant. I love Oasis.

Did I really say that sentimental guff? I’m not sure that I did. Anyway, I’m usually much more cynical than the person writing above. The person above sounds insane. Or stoned on something…..but I haven’t smoked the weed in a good fifteen years. Oh well. Not to worry. Onwards and downwards…..

Les Mis adaptations and apolitical appropriation

I think it's no secret on this blog that I love the original Les Mis 1980 concept album in French, and that I also love comparing different versions of the stage musical. I've noticed that Les Mis seems to get progressively more vaguely apolitical as time goes on, not only in the way it's viewed in our culture, but in the actual text as well.

It's natural for specifics to be lost in adaptation. It's easier to get people to care about 'the people vs. the king' in a relatively short musical rather than actually facing the audience with the absolute mess that were 19th century french politics (monarchist orleanists vs monarchist legitimists vs imperialist vs bonapartist democrats vs every flavour of republican imaginable). Still, I feel that as time goes on, as more revivals and adaptations of the stage musical come out, the more watered down its politics become. Like, Les Mis at it's core is just meant to be a fancily written, drawn out political essay, right?

In a way I feel that the 1980 concept album almost tried to modernise it with its symbols of progress. Yes, through Enjolras' infamous disco segment (and other similar allusions to the ideals of social change), but perhaps most interestingly to me, through one short line that threw me off when I first heard it, because it seems so insignificant, but might actually be the most explicitly leftist line of all of Les Mis.

"Son coeur vibrait à gauche et il le proclama" (roughly "His heart beat to the left and he proclaimed it" i.e: he was a leftist) Feuilly says, while speaking of the now dead général Lamarque in Les Amis de L'ABC.

What's that? An actual mention of leftism??? in MY vaguely progressive yet apolitical musical??? More seriously, this mention of leftism, clashing with the rest of the musical due to it's seeming anachronism, is interesting not because it's actually more political than anything else in Les Mis, rather, because it's not scared to explicitly name what it's trying to do.

But we've come a long way from the Concept Album days, it's been 43 years, and Les Misérables is now one of the most famous and beloved musicals in the entire world. It's been revived and reimagined and adapted in a million ways, in different mediums, in different languages and countries, and it's clear that it's changed along with it's audience.

On top of pointing out a cool line in my favourite version of the musical, I wanted to write this post to reflect on the perception of the political message of this work. We as a Les Mis fandom on Tumblr are very political, I don't need to tell you that, however, I feel that because this very left leaning space has sprung out of a work we all love so much, we oftentimes forget to revisit it from a more objective point of view.

Les Misérables has a history of being misrepresented, this has been true since it's publication, since american confederate soldiers became entranced with their censored translation Lee's Miserables. However, with it's musical adaptation, this misinterpretation has been made not only more accessible but also easier. As much as I love musical theatre and I think it is at it's best an incredible art form able to communicate complex themes visulally by the masses for the masses, I think it'd be idealistic to ignore the fact that the people who can afford to go see musicals regularly are, usually, not the common folk. Broadway and the West End are industries which, like most, need money to keep them afloat, and are loved people of all political backgrounds (and unfortunately, often older conservatives) not just communists on tumblr. We've seen the way Les Miz UK's social media team constantly misses the mark regarding different social issues, and the way Cameron Makintosh has used the musical to propagate his transphobia, and most of us can agree that these actions are in complete antithesis with the message of Les Misérables as a novel.

But I must ask, how does Les Mis ,as a West End musical in it's current form, actually drive a leftist message, and how are we as a community helping if every time someone relating to the musical messes up if we just claim they "don't get it"?

I'm thinking in particular of incidents like last october, where Just Stop Oil crashed Les Mis at the West End. Whether you think it's good activism or not is not the question I think, this instance is interesting particularly because it shows that, outside of Les Misérables analysis circles and fandom spaces, it is not recognised as an inherently leftist, political or activist work, and instead of just saying they completely missed the point of the musical, I think it'd be interesting to take a step back and look at what the musical as it stands actually represents in our culture today.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, so I won't try to give one, but I do hope we can reflect on this a bit.

Hello folks.

So, I waited a while to let everything marinate in my brain before writing this. Haven is an interesting album to discuss in the grand scheme of the Trench discography. Everything feels familiar & status quo, but different, new & exciting all at once. Its production is fantastic throughout and truly allows for everything to shine. It’s also their most cinematic album to date, which is saying something given what Astoria was inspired by.

So let’s break down each track, shall we?

A Normal Life: Already gushed about this one when it came out and my thoughts haven’t changed one bit. This just might be my new favourite opener. There’s just a little sprinkling of everything from all across their discography that allows this beauty to marinate and stand on its own.

Lightning & Thunder: I’m torn. I like it still, but I do think that when you listen to it within the context of the album it loses something. It was definitely made to be a radio single. There’s nothing wrong with that.

I’m Not Getting Better: Straight to the point, catchy & fun. I really have nothing else to say on the song.

Down To You: Arguably the biggest earworm on the album. This one gets in your head and it just stays with you.

Now or Never: The By Now of the record for me. Soft & yet full of momentum all at once. This is a dream worth fighting for, indeed. Also, while both INGB & DTY show off a more R&B/Funk flow, it really sticks on this song, and now that you’ve noticed it, you’ll be hearing it a lot throughout the record.

Into The Storm: Hello, Porcelain. But also… it’s own thing. It might not be giving up, but I don’t see it as surrender either. I see it as going with the flow, facing your problems head on. This is also the first true dive into Josh’s relationship with Amanda on the album, and how he’s so happy they finally figured out how to co-exist.

Ancient History: Oh hi, Astoria. You mind if I take elements of Burning Up & Yesterday and blend them into something new? And how about the past arguments in his and Amanda’s relationship don’t matter, and how it was nice to meet back up with her. It shows how time can heal relationships. Also, SAXOPHONE. That is all.

Stand and Fight: The actual Porcelain of the record. People thought they were gonna go in a This Meets War for this song, when instead it’s a slow burn that truly stays with you.

Turn & Run: Here’s how you do a sequel song and then make it stand out from its older brother. Much like the combos of Celebrity Status/Perfect & B-Team/Toy Soldiers, both sides of the coin make me giddy inside. And holy cow… welcome to the edge indeed. That hint of Fix Me screaming… I need more of it Josh. Please? I’ll be a good girl. There’s also a lot of Masterpiece Theatre II on this one. Easily my favourite of the short songs.

Worlds Collide: I go back and forth on this one in my head. There’s parts of me that love it, there’s parts of me that feels it’s too similar to the two tracks before it…. And then we have the end. And that just… made me smile. Also, I love Josh SCREAMING “Nobody’s Safe” and the fact they left in the vocal crack. That’s how you can tell his emotions are in full display here. So yeah.

Nights Like These: The comforting palette cleanser after three songs hit you with whiplash back to back to back. It’s very reminiscent of tavern songs, sea shanty’s & is just a warm hug of a track. Also, breaking down the fact that sometimes it’s nice to have just a cozy, relaxing night with friends. Feels like the Who Do You Love of the record too.

Remember Me By: Um, Micheal? Did you just possess Josh again? This feels so 80’s R&B I can’t help but love it. Also, Ian! Nice to hear you sing, bud. We’ve heard the other three all throughout this record and now we get your voice on top of the amazing percussion. Kudos.

Haven: So, here we are. The closing track. And, it’s good. It feels like they took The Killing Kind , Masterpiece Theatre III & End of An Era Abd threw them in a blender… and the result came out great, but… it does lack something to me? And if anything, it brings out the fact this album fits into the Relationship Theory too: It is about starting anew like I said ages ago but also about how their relationship (Josh & Amanda) isn’t perfect but he loves the imperfection now that they’ve figured out how to make it work. She might’ve broke his heart once but he reconciled & became stronger because of it. And now he can show that all across these 13 tracks.

So yeah. Haven’s likely my album of the year, and I do like it. But I do think that while it has some of the highest highs the band had ever reached, I do think they didn’t fully nail the Hero’s Journey theming & that it’s not as cohesive as some of their other work. It’s a sturdy S-, easily #2 or #3 in my overall rankings, even #1 depending on the day.

One Direction was, and still is, one of the most popular boy bands in history. There’s a reason for that: a group of talented, charismatic young men who could sing remarkably well and release hit after hit. For many people, myself included, One Direction was an essential part of our childhoods. We grew up with their music, their personalities, and the excitement of each new album, tour, and interview. It’s an experience that shaped a generation—something the newer generation might not fully understand or ever get to experience in the same way.

As fans, it’s natural to have a favorite member or two. We connect with each band member in different ways and might think one has a stronger voice or a unique style. This is true in any group, whether it’s a band, a cast of a TV show, or a sports team—we have favorites. That doesn’t mean we dislike the others or think they lack talent. The same goes for One Direction. Fans might lean towards Harry, Louis, Zayn, Niall, or Liam for different reasons, but it’s the combination of all five that made the band special in the first place.

Over the years, there’s been plenty of debate about who has the “best” voice or is the most talented. While some members may have a vocal range or style that stands out in certain songs, it doesn’t make one better than the others. Each member—Zayn, Louis, Harry, Niall, and Liam—brought something unique to every song. Whether it was Zayn’s high notes, Louis’ emotional tone, Harry’s powerful vocals, Niall’s warm voice, or Liam’s versatility, each voice was crucial to the band’s sound.

Today, Harry is undeniably the most commercially successful and widely recognized member, with a solo career that has propelled him to incredible heights. He currently has the highest number of Spotify monthly listeners at around 48.5 million, followed by Zayn at 27.6 million, Niall at 15.1 million, Liam at 11.7 million, and Louis at 3.1 million. While Harry’s success is well-deserved, it’s unfortunate that his achievements sometimes overshadow the others. All of them are incredibly talented and have made their own mark, both as solo artists and as members of One Direction.

It’s okay to have a favourite. But it’s also important to recognise that One Direction wouldn’t have been the global phenomenon it became without each of them—Louis, Niall, Liam, Zayn, and Harry. Each member played an irreplaceable role in creating the songs and experiences we loved.

A lot of the fans were and are girls. The media’s focus on Harry, especially during their time together, did play a part in making him more visible, calling him a womaniser at 16 years old, which is absolutely disgusting and young Harry never deserved that label.

This attention wasn’t always fair to him, and it took attention away from the contributions of the other members.

Additionally, when you listen to a lot of One Direction’s songs, you’ll notice that Harry’s voice often stands out during the choruses. This isn’t because he’s trying to outshine the others—far from it. It’s likely an artistic or production choice made to make the song sound cohesive. The slightly louder presence of Harry’s voice, especially in the chorus, might unconsciously draw people to his vocals. Over time, this likely contributed to his increased popularity and set the stage for his successful solo career.

However, it’s unfortunate that the voices of the other members were sometimes overlooked because of this approach. I have observed that in many of their songs, it was more common to hear Harry, leading to a perception that some voices were “better” than others. Yet each member’s voice had something unique to offer, and every fan could connect to different qualities of their singing. Take, for example, the song No Control from their FOUR (Deluxe) album. In this track, you can clearly hear Louis’ vocals during the chorus, and it makes the song distinct. His voice brings a raw, emotional quality that many fans love. Another clip that has resurfaced is Liam hitting the You and I high note, and doing it well. This shows how much potential the other members had when given the chance to shine.

Unfortunately, One Direction’s management reportedly played a big role in these decisions. There are documented moments where certain members’ microphones were turned down or even turned off. One infamous clip shows Niall’s mic being turned off by management during a live performance, which prevented him from singing certain parts. Myself have noticed that without Niall’s or Louis’ voices, the songs lacked a certain balance and harmony that made the band special. Similarly, there’s a clip of Louis’ microphone cutting out mid-performance, and the song doesn’t sound quite right without his vocal input. These moments highlight the importance of each member’s voice to the overall sound of the band.

In live shows, it’s evident how much each member’s vocals contribute when they sing together. The tech crew and management likely had to adjust microphone levels to highlight certain voices at different times, which is common in the music industry to enhance the overall performance. However, these choices sometimes led to Niall, Louis, Liam and even Zayn being overshadowed by Harry’s vocals. This wasn’t a reflection of anyone’s individual talent; it was simply how management or producers chose to structure the songs.

It’s also worth noting that choosing who sings which part is a normal part of the music production process. In any band, it’s common for certain members to be assigned particular parts that best suit their vocal strengths, just as actors are cast in roles that align with their talents. For One Direction, this often meant that Harry, with his powerful voice and broad appeal, sang prominent parts, while Louis’ unique tone and Niall’s warm vocals added essential layers in other sections. This doesn’t diminish the other members’ contributions; rather, it reflects the decisions made to create a cohesive final product.

In the end, One Direction was a blend of five unique voices and personalities, each member bringing a special touch that made the band unforgettable. They weren’t just background singers for one standout star. Every voice was essential, and the magic of One Direction came from the harmony of their combined talents.

At the end of the day, One Direction was a band, a collective experience that connected us as fans and changed music history. The band’s magic was in its mix of voices, personalities, and the bond between them. And no matter where each member’s path takes them, fans will always remember that One Direction was truly something extraordinary because of all five members together.

Sparkstember Day 19: Lil' Beethoven (Ride 'Em Cowboy)

First of all, let this very important fact be known: the love I have for all three albums in the Lil' Beethoven trilogy cannot be overstated. I think I can safely call them my favourite pieces of art ever made. You know, when you look forward to something and it not only lives up to all your expectations but it's also just SO SO much more? Something about this neoclassical / dada / deconstruction of pop music / whatever-you-should-even-call-it approach is absolutely PERFECTLY suited for my tastes, and I didn't even know I was looking for something EXACTLY like this until I found it.

I think the circumstances of my first hearing of this album are pretty funny and something I got pretty lucky with actually (I often think about this with Sparks in general, as much as I wish I've known about them sooner I also do feel like they appeared in my life when I needed that the most. But anyway.) I was very eagerly looking forward to hearing it and finally seeing for myself what the genius of this album is all about. But I insisted that I can only do it through a physical format because yesss, let's make it even more *special*! The moment I've been waiting for! So yeah let's gooo, I need to wait until my CD arrives in the mail (that was one of the longest weeks of my life). And then I started to wonder, well, maybe I actually won't like it that much. To hype myself up to this extent and then be severly dissapointed - would have sucked!

Well, I was NOT dissapointed. Instead I was perplexed, confused, but also very intrigued and quite, ok not just quite, *completely* amazed already. That was the initial reaction and I think it's a rare but very beautiful moment when this happens - no need to *fully* grasp it right away, but enough to be all like "oh that was SOMETHING. I need more." As I said after that first listen (and I actually have my whole LIVE reaction to hearing LB written down lmao, that's how much of a big deal this was for me), I felt like it actually has to grow on me a bit still, gradually but surely with each next listen, rather than the 1st listen being THE prime listening experience. And that was very true! But it wasn't even gradual, it was very fast, seriously. And something very important that stood out to me right away too were the melodies - something about them, and that continues into HYL and ECOTD too. It's this classic feeling of: this always existed, or at least it feels like I've known it for years already. And as I listen more and become more familiar with them the magic still grows.

It's of course no coincidence to me that an album that relies so much on extreme levels of repetition is so addicting, even hypnotising. And once upon a time I thought that I couldn't like something that's too repetitive and therefore could be considered monotonous or "predictable". But nothing is predictable about LB actually. (Besides... ok, I'll get to that one bit later). But yeah, it's good for the brain. And it's been said before by others but this music definitely has this certain neurodivergent appeal thanks to all this, and, well, I love that aspect of it so much and I definitely relate to it on some level that goes even deeper than just song topics and instrumentation choices. It's in the structure and the fundaments of it all too.

I legally can't finish this without a dedicated paragraph to the 2004 Live In Stockholm performance because HOLY SHIT. Feeling so lucky again that all three of these albums got this treatment and we have recordings of these half-concert-half-performance-art pieces that we can now marvel at. I will say that like, a pretty big part of the sum of the appeal that LB has as an album is stored in this show and its visual and narrative elaboration on its themes. And also it's just so fun to watch! Sometimes I thought about how this might be an even better introduction to LB / this era of Sparks / Sparks in general than the actual album but well, never had a chance to test that and you know. Maybe shouldn't recommend Sparks with one of the most leftfield things there is to be found from them. Either way, very good, very important, felt like experiencing the power of LB for the first time all over again.

So now, please hear my exact reasonings for why I so deeply love (almost) every single one of these songs......

The Rhythm Thief

NO song made such a big impression on me the first time I heard it as this. I might have gotten more used to it after all this time but man, The Rhythm Thief, you will always be the realest one to me. This is what made me look forward to the whole album so much and convinced me that it would be like nothing else I've heard before. And that turned out to be so very beautifully true!

What Are All These Bands So Angry About?

I Married Myself

Aromantic anthem, to me. Not that much to say actually but it's just, a very sweet and pretty song even when it might be taken as just this sort of ironic piece, I think it's this situation where a song can be taken more or less literally and it doesn't lose anything, rather the sincerity takes on a new sort of meaning? Because yes, maybe this hyperbolic situation (marrying yourself) COULD be the solution to the heartbreak of failed relationships. Ever thought about that??? Ok, stopping right here and leaving my I Married Myself analysis for another day

My Baby's Taking Me Home

This was sort of the first Sparks song I've ever heard, or maybe that I quote-unquote purposefully listened to, and I think that's pretty important considering that it was the moment that ultimately lead to... all this. This song has always been incredibly beautiful and powerful to me, but lately it just makes me emotional to an extent that makes it hard to listen to most of the time. I WOULD sell all my material possessions for even one chance to experience this song live by the way

Your Call Is Very Important To Us. Please Hold

Earns soooo much as a live version, but even without that I think it's genius in the same way as The Rhythm Thief, and maybe the most disquieting piece here overall... If we ignore the next one maybe

Ugly Guys With Beautiful Girls

Sitting there hearing the intro of this song all like "huh, this is so chill and calm... too calm..." and then being hit with, well, everything that's going on in this song afterwards was truly THE MOMENT back in the day (and re: the predictability thing. idk though, it's not like, really an issue). Later on I decided that this sort of narrative nature of the song makes it have less replayability value than the rest (???) but I abandoned that opinion soon enough, thank god. I love it how long it took me to realize that this song and the ending of MBTMH are the only times when drums appear on this entire album (I mean no, I'm not very proud of that fact actually, as the self-proclaimed biggest LB fan in my area. And The Rhythm Thief literally saying "say goodbye to the beat"... come on man). So yes, sometimes less is more! I adore this song now it's such a treat I would gladly terrorize my neighbours with it

Suburban Homeboy

Ok, I'm sorry Suburban Homeboy fans but this is the only song here that I'm not a HUGE fan of. I still think it's brilliant and an incredibly fitting ending for the whole thing - the mood whiplash is amazing as this is the only "vaguely happy sounding" song on here, per my words from months back. And what's better than yelling WE ARE THE SUBURBAN HOMEBOYS! (I'm actually awaiting today's Sparks karaoke rating reveal very impatiently lol the reveal happened before I posted this and I'm very happy about it)

One more actually, a quick word on Wunderbar because it gave us two things that we might have not been able to do without: 1) this whole album actually (the fact that LB exists because of Wunderbar giving the Maels the idea to continue meddling with this style. pros and cons for blur vs oasis bc i'm bored

blur: better band in general. great albums. never made a bad album (leisure has some bangers idc). BETTER musicians (and i can't stress this enough lol). their reunion in 2008/09 was super emotional and made me a super fan for life. they made my all time fav song (beetlebum). making the self titled after the great escape while their rivals did a bloated coke filled record.... objectively iconic. everything about damon and graham which i won't get into now because it's a lot (last album was underwhelming because there wasn't a "i love graham 🤓" song in it. discuss). at the end of the day i prefer them as a band because damon is annoyingly talented and graham is one of my favourite guitarists. speaking of ANNOYING lol.... i find them most of the time... insufferable? like damon definitely sounds like a good dude (whatever that means) but at the same time while watching his interviews, especially when other blur members are around, he sounds SO pretentious and look so bored that i'm always annoyed on behalf of his bandmates. (especially during the latest press tour he looked like he was doing charity work for his poor, unemployed friends lol. now this might be true for alex and dave but STILL. rude) i still like him obviously but he clearly thinks he is god's gift to universe and like. at least be funny like liam if you have a god complex. imo 💀

phew, ok gonna just ramble for a minute! for the last couple of days i've been getting so caught up in my milex feelings and the letdown after the anticipation that i almost forgot to be properly excited for this trip 🙈 but now that i'm actually in dublin, after listening to arctic monkeys and miles tunes on the flight and getting hyped about seeing my one of my best irl friends from london again for the first time since june, it's much easier for me to put things in perspective, thank goodness!! i'd have kicked myself later if i spent my time here moping (which i've kind of been doing these past two days) instead of being excited about getting to see my all time favourite band play again (twice!!) AND with miles as well, and just have a fun trip with my friends in dublin (even though it'll be raining cats and dogs, but we'll be in the pub most of the time anyway 🍻)

after the london gig in june i really thought that was it for a couple of years, so to have been given this extra opportunity to see them again so soon is insane and an absolute blessing. i'm SO fucking excited, i can't even tell you 😭 these will be my 8th and 9th arctic monkeys gigs to date, and i'm still just as hyped as i was 10 years ago, and i think that's worth reflecting on for a minute ❤️

i'm putting some more musings about the milex situation under the cut for anyone who might be interested in a different perspective, but mostly it's just for me, to be able to untangle the mess that my mind has been in these past few days. also, please know that i'm definitely not trying to invalidate anyone's concerns or diminish anyone's feelings, because lord knows i've been feeling all the things the past few days and all those feelings are very (very) real!

i guess what i just keep coming back to is the fact that arctic monkeys (or alex, really, lbr) asked miles to be the support for these four dates when they absolutely didn't have to do that, and that if there was any bad blood between them then they totally could've asked anyone else. but they didn't, they asked miles! and miles agreed! it's much more likely that the fact that they're not playing together is due to logistics (with the orchestra and limited rehearsal time) and wanting to highlight miles's new album than any personal reasons tbh. they're professionals doing their jobs first and foremost, and while obviously we'd love a display of sentimentality, if that doesn't fit the show for whatever reason then it makes sense they don't give us that. i'm sure it's all been discussed and agreed on between them, and that they're doing perfectly fine behind the scenes. it's true that miles shows us a lot of himself, but alex and the other boys do not, so it also makes sense to me that what miles shares about them/their interactions with him is limited too, much as i'd love to see him gush about them and post bts footage. i always find that i get easily swept up in emotions and conjecture when i'm watching things unfold from a distance, through the tumblr/fandom lens, but i forget sometimes that that is a heavily coloured lens, and that real life is often very different, despite what social media etc. may seem to show. and for me personally, i've noticed that sometimes it's really good to break out of the bubble for a bit and see things from a different perspective, so i'm glad i was able to do that before my shows!

also, on a side note, i've seen some people being disappointed that alex didn't dedicate bodypaint to miles but just gave him a shoutout, but to me the distinction doesn't matter too much. he mentioned miles when he didn't have to, and miles stayed to watch the boys do their thing after his own set, and he didn't have to do that either if he wasn't feeling it. the fact is that recently there have been more and more signs that our boys are actually growing closer again than they seemingly have been for a few years, and while obviously i just want them to give us everything and announce a tlsp reunion and also profess their undying love for each other while they're at it, maybe their doing what they can right now, and they just need a bit more time to get to where they once were. we all need time to heal, or something like that, anyway. i obviously don't know anything, but this possiblity seems just as if not more likely to me than the other option (which would be that any of this is a sign they're growing further apart, instead), so i'm good with that for the moment.

anyway, this is just me talking to myself on the plane and creating some perspective for myself, but maybe someone else might find it helpful too, who knows. in any case, i'm going to do my best to enjoy it all to the fullest!! and while obviously getting to see them do something together would be brilliant, it would just be the cherry on an otherwise already really fucking delicious cake ❤️

AHHHGH DUDE, IVE FINALLY FOUND YOU ON HERE, YESSSS BRO, YOUR WRITING IS PHENOMENAL, (I'd say I'm the biggest lagwafis enthusiast on the internet, as soon as i read lagwafis, I bought the CD, the collectors edition pill pack white shirt, I have so so so many quotes on my Craig Tucker Shrine from the fic, and if you wanted to know, I've currently managed to read lagwafis 388 times, people believe I know it by heart, get it? "I know you by heart, Tweek" and the agonizing fact I quote lagwafis every day whenever I see a brink of reference infront of me, like let's say yesterday, I was in a store- and I saw a tub of chai latte and I was so close to screaming lagwafis reference inside of the store, I'm also cooking up some fan art (specifically from coming home) so I'll totally tag you when it's out) AHHH I'M GONNA WRITE SO MUCH ON HERE IT MIGHT GO TO THE LIMIT, okay so first, let's talk about the fanfic itself, there are SO many tiny details in this fic that have either made me laugh or cry in agony, which is a good thing, also, the characterization is TOP TIER, a lot of fanfictions tend to fall slightly short on the background characters outside of the pairing that tends to be the main focus. This was a great change, especially in Craig's group and Stan especially, everyone felt so real and totally had obvious quirks from the fandom itself that I LOVED SO MUCH, your writing evokes so much emotion that I somehow managed to feel exactly how everyone felt in a chapter relevant to them.

Let's talk about the character description choices, the way you described Tweek in almost every chapter made my heart ache in the best way possible, you made him sound like a fallen angel, the definition of ethereal, also the fact you decided on giving him that mouth scar with backstory to it is TOP TIER, I have a similar scar on my lip and whenever I see it in the mirror I think of Tweek from this fanfic, let's move on to Craig, the way you wrote his internal monologue and the way his emotions played out made me absolutely soul crushed, this entire fic left a deep pit in my heart, especially how Craig was described, Craig was written so realistically that it actually felt like he was real. He purposely blocked off his emotions to prevent himself from being seen as vulnerable, he struggled with keeping his “I don’t give a shit” personality until it all just exploded and the part that he was so vulnerable with was exposed to the entire school.

Also I see that the lagwafis anniversary is coming up soon!! I usually celebrate it every year when I get the chance to, by doing lagwafis related things and shit, this fanfic deserves way more than just kudos and comments and hits, this fic deserves the damn world and beyond, I even had literal dreams of this fic being one day announced to be an animated movie, and if it ever did I would cry and vomit in the best way ever possible, my life would be so complete if we became moots on here, also, I'm not sure if you have TikTok, but that's where I'm most known to being the lagwafis enthusiast on there, i make a lot of lagwafis related videos, my username is spacecadetcraigz, if you ever see this at some point, just know im so grateful you took your time to read through this.

388 times????? That’s true dedication my friend, you must read it like twice a week? Incredible, I’m so glad you enjoy something I wrote this much. I’m also so glad you love the album by Spiritualised too, it’s such a special album and there’s something so perfect about the title track that I’ve never been able to shake.

I didn’t even realise the anniversary was coming up, thanks for reminding me! It’s so weird to think I started writing that story six years ago. At that time I’d been catching up with South Park and when I first saw the Tweek X Craig episode it was my new favourite thing from the first minute in.

An animated movie would be amazing, Matt and Trey give us the rights pls, free of charge if possible (they’d so try for another billion dollar deal ahahahah)
