okay @kazuza-art Iâm back on a separate post because tumblr apparently has a fucking character limit for text posts. trust my rage.
last time we covered why for me personally gr*ndeld*re has more holes in it than swiss cheese. now weâll cover why I think time travel harrydore is superior and respects both characters.
                                đ˛
harrydore
the tl;dr of the below is the following sentences: I don't believe in 'opposites attract' at all, but I do believe that your partner should be similar and different enough from you to keep the relationship fresh and inspiring and romantic. An Albus who's years post-Ariana's death has the emotional capacity and maturity to appreciate Harry as a partner that he didn't have at almost-eighteen.
oh yeah uh, since this is time travel!harrydore we'll put this on the playing field of 'Harry is somehow in a time period where Albus is alive and well and post-1899 stuff'. I have to obviously take canon into account where Harry's a kid growing up and Albus is very much an adult for my arguments, but like... what can you do. I'm not asking That Woman to write me a canon harrydore story. She's a TERF hanging with fascists these days, and also she would fuck it up.
here's why harrydore screams 'solution' to me:
Harry and Albus care deeply about each other, despite their own best efforts, and this is shown consistently. Even when the fandom has been wildly inconsistent and flat-out wrong about Harry and Albus and what they mean to each other, That Woman has kept their bond consistent even through works she didn't write like Cursed Child. Harry comes from an abusive/neglectful environment and his relationship strategy boils down to 'abandon them before they abandon me first'; Albus is allergic to showing his entire self to anyone after being betrayed and left behind, so he talks above people's heads and leads them astray with batty humor. Despite all that, despite coming into their initial headmaster-student relationship with their walls up higher than China's, they eventually became fond of one another to the point where they are constantly re-affirming their loyalty and devotion to one another beyond the cause of defeating Voldemort. Itâs to the point where Dumbledore literally dies and Harry, seventeen years old and in danger of dying every thirty seconds in Deathly Hallows, spends a significant amount of time wondering why his mentor wasnât open and honest with him about his personal life beforehand.
Harry and Albus can (and do) make each other better, physically and emotionally. Albus has an astounding amount of faith in Harry almost from the moment they meet; he talks to and treats him with a lot of respect. This only grows as he gets to know Harry better through their annual âpost-Voldemort-tried-to-kill-Harryâ conversations. Albus comes to see Harry as a âbetter manâ than he was as a young person, and later in the series he constantly mentions how admirable and unique he finds Harryâs insight, compassion, incorruptibility, and capacity for forgiveness. On Harryâs part, Albus is one of the few adults who treats him kindly from their first interactionâAlbus listens to Harry, he teaches him without being condescending, he believes Harry when others donât, and he shields him from threats of all kinds (Voldemort, Death Eaters, Rita Skeeter, the whole frigging Ministry of Magic). He admires Albus as the kind of man he might want to be somedayâsomeone powerful who isnât afraid to be a bit whimsical. In return for Albusâ high regard and protection, Harry freely gives Albus a lot of trust and unconditional loyalty. There are obviously pitfalls in their relationship that happen due to lack of trust and/or communication from both, but both of them are able to acknowledge and admit that withholding things from each other is wrong and only leads to more pain.Â
Albus and Harry use their interactions with each other to smooth over their character flaws, instead of exacerbating them. Albus has spent a century being extremely secretive and distant, partly because of his relationship with Gellert, to the point where even characters he knows as âfriendsâ do not know his entire backstory (with Minerva McGonagall being an exception). Harry has spent so long being ignored that he gravitates toward any who are kind to him, but is just as quick to cut people off if he thinks for a second that they are inauthentic or about to betray him. He also has trouble seeing the âgraysâ in a personâs character: his view of Ron changes drastically depending on whether theyâre on the outs or not, and his view of Snape is extremely negative until almost the end of the series, even though he knows the man is spying for Dumbledore for almost three years. But when Albus and Harry spend time together, or share their thoughts and feelings after Voldemortâs latest attack, they take on one anotherâs better traits. From Harry, Albus learns (to an extent) to be more open with his thoughts and feelings; from Albus, Harry learns how to read people and predict what theyâll do, and how to put himself in othersâ shoes before passing judgment.
Meta reason: in the fandom (unlike an uncomfortable portion of gr*ndeld*re fics and fans) the majority of people who either ship Harry and Albus or appreciate their platonic relationship actually love or at least like both characters. Where other ships involving Harry or Albus sometimes involve one or the other being bashed or diminished to prop up the other partner, most depictions of Harry and Albus in harrydore are respectful to both men and try to be as accurate and in-depth as possible. While, you know, understandably sticking up the middle finger at canon for not letting them be together in any way, shape or form thanks to book 6. There are just not as many bash sessions-disguised-as-fanfics or blatant mischaracterizations of Harry or Albus in time travel!harrydore as there are of either man in alternate ships like gr*ndeld*re, h*nny, dr*rry, t*marry/h*rrym*rt, sn*rry, etc.
Albus and Harry change over time and their relationship changes, too, without dissolving. Harry goes from being a bright-eyed innocent with a sharp tongue to a fierce young man with a temper, and then again to a calmer, insightful young adult with a deeper understanding of the world. Albus goes from a cheerful-but-distant headmaster to a more compassionate, hands-on mentor. And although they fight sometimes, although they donât always make the right decisions for one another or themselves, both wordlessly resolve to keep working on their relationship. The two of them have had significant disagreements (about Snape, Voldemort, and the prophecy among other things) but have never thrown in the towel. The only reason it âendsâ is because Dumbledore passes away and unwittingly leaves Harry alone.
Some might argue that Harry gives a lot in harrydore and Albus takes. I would counter-argue that the giving and taking is almost even between them. Albus sacrifices just as much and more than he does with gr*ndeld*re: his time, his family, his reputation, and his life; but with harrydore he actually gets something back. Harryâs devotion is notable in the series for not being blind hero-worship, but rather a deep appreciation of Albus Dumbledore as a human who makes mistakes but has good intentions. Harry consistently gives Albus tangible (information, the Sword of Gryffindor, random Horcruxes) and intangible (trust, support, faith) things in return for the constant risks Albus takes to keep him safe behind the scenes.
Finally, Harry as-an-adult is to me personally a golden opportunity for Albus, who constantly talks about the value and importance of love, to experience it for himself. We do get some of this in canon through their platonic relationship, but romantically Harry has a lot of traits that a post-Ariana, post-Gellert Albus would appreciate and find compelling. Harryâs very straightforward and says what he means; he may not be a genius or a prodigy, but heâs pretty smart and powerful in his own right; and he values his bonds with others, and will do anything for the people he loves and/or considers family. A wounded Albus who lost his family and the love of his life would be pretty well-served by someone who would remain faithful to him and would not leave his side, no matter what.
In summation: time travel!harrydore is peak in both fandom and meta and it easily clears. gr*ndeld*re could never
#fireandgold#fireandgoldposts#kazuza-art#time travel harrydore#thanks again for the ask!#sorry for the delay. it comes down to literally two things: my job and zelda#why not grindelwald#call that shit ''fireandgold rambles and wanders into ship bashing territory part two'' lmao#dumbledore meta#potter meta#take a drink every time fireandgold says ''Harry will do anything for the people he loves'' lol

Can someone please explain why the trio didn't take divination class seriously??
Firstly, they go to a magic school. Harry and Hermione had no clue that magic ever existed until they were 11 and someone was like, "You can actually do magic and we're taking you to magic school so you know how to control it." And they both were like, "Bet." And just went with it.
They are taught magical theory, transfiguration, potions, defense, charms, flying, etc. And the one subject they thought would be a throw away class was divinations? Really? I mean, Ron and Harry continued to take it because it was an "easy A" I guess.
But divination got shit on the entire time, even when we find out Trelawney was the one that channeled The Prophecy to Dumbledore. McGonagall shit on the subject, and Dumbledore admitted to thinking about cancelling the subject altogether until Trelawney's interview. Even then, Trelawney is constantly described as crazy. Like, shouldn't she be revered as a powerful witch, or at least be credited for revealing who was going to save the world?
Anyway...
Hermione, the supposed brightest witch of her age, believed in every other subject at Hogwarts, EXCEPT divinations. And it solely comes down to her personal morals and ignorance. Divination is actually one of the most powerful subjects to master. And it combines many subjects in one: potions, herbology, dada (wandless magic/Legilimency), astrology, history of magic, ancient runes, and probably others. She is immediately turned off by the idea of learning divinations because Trelawney tells her that she's not good at it during their first lesson. I firmly believe that if she stuck with it and gave it an honest chance, Hermione would've been one of the best in the class by the end of third year.
But no, she chose to... use a time turner so she can literally time jump and know the outcome of some evens and prevent the worst from happening. Idk, man... That sounds like you found a way to cheat in divinations lol. And McGonagall straight-up helped you because she is also not a divinations stan.
Ron was fairly good at it because he actually ironically allowed himself to open up to the possibility. He'd make jokes and stuff, but he wasn't afraid of the magic part of metaphysics, even if he wasn't aware of it.
And I cannot stress enough how Harry is actually very naturally gifted in divinations. Trelawney saw it and told him many times, along with the whole impending death thing. But again, Harry thought her personality was coo-coo bananas, so he would just roll his eyes and basically say, "yeah, what else is new?"
Like, hello?!
Harry acknowledges that she is correct, but still acts like she doesn't know what she's talking about? Not to mention Harry's dreams are always in reference to his current situations, fears, desires, and future. And added bonus: he has the Voldy connection. You can't tell me that Trelawney wouldn't wanna sit in on Harry and Dumbledore's meetings about the connection and just fucking observe and eventually write a book on two-way astral projection and telekinetic possession! Don't get me started on how she could've helped with the horcrux hunt...
Getting back on track, centaurs are also known for being extremely intuitive and look to the sky for guidance. Firenze was hired as the replacement divination teacher when Trelawney was fired, and if I remember, he was doubted a bit too. Not as much as my girl Sybill, but still. Students respected Firenze because divinations was part of his culture. But, like, it is also part of human culture too, so idk. Inconsistencies are a bitch. (So is the blatant racism, but I digress...)
Honestly, I think divinations would've been taken more seriously if Trelawney was credited as a legit Seer. Like, the Ministry and Dumbledore could've just given her legitimacy because of a prophesy. Instead she had to rely on her lineage. According to [terf redacted], Trelawney was considered "washed up" by the time she was hired at Hogwarts and she relied heavily on alcohol to open up more. She was considered 99% fraud, but, like, if people gave her a chance, she wouldn't have to lie to get their attention. (Also one could argue that they weren't lies at all.) Because others didn't believe her, she ended up not believing in herself.
In conclusion, divinations was heavily used in the books without the trio knowing it. I just wish they took it seriously.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Harry Potter characters that were criminally underused (in no particular order)
(MAJOR SPOILERS)
Luna Lovegood - literally only introduced like halfway through the fifth book, yet probably the most influential ravenclaw character. Her odd mannerisms and odder outlook would have made her a fabulous addition to the golden trioâs shenanigans, yet she only serves this purpose in one case
Mad-eye Moody - heâs âwell-developedâ in the fourth book, and we get a lot of content of him... only to discover it wasnât him at all. Then, he briefly appears with the order and then dies. Great. What a wonderful use of a skilled fighter and mentor.
Remus Lupin - okay, so he does get the whole third book but then... he just fucks off? Ofc then he, too, returns to fight with the order, fall in love with a woman half his age, have a baby with her, and then die immediately thereafter. Heâs just such a cool guy with so much to offer to Harry and to readers (when it comes to insight on discrimination in the wizarding community) and he just doesnât get a chance to do nearly enough. What a wasted opportunity.
Pravati and Padma Patil - yeah, these are two different characters, but we know so little about them that I canât even discuss them individually. Theyâre twins in different houses! How cool! Thereâs so much to be explored there, especially considering the competitive atmosphere among houses that Harry perceives. Not to mention the fact that they inexplicably agreed to go to the Yule Ball with Harry and Ron respectively despite a) apparently not knowing them very well and b) not even being all that desperate to hang out with them at the ball (I think Padma asks Ron to dance a few times and then gives up) (side note: this made me extremely mad when I was little, because I had I major crush on Padma). What compelled them to do that? What are they like? What are the differences between them that caused them to be sorted into different houses? Gah, they could have been so interesting!
Cho Chang - this is one that makes me genuinely a little mad (same goes for #6). Sheâs just so two dimensional, and thatâs really not fair. Sheâs a decoration on Harryâs arm for what? A year or two? And she then cries, dates Diggory, and then she cries again (I think she dates Diggory first but you get the point). HER PURPOSE IS NOT JUST TO CRY OVER GUYS. Sheâs a ravenclaw. Letâs hear about that. Where do her interests lie? Is she an academic? Is she an artist? What kind of intelligence does she have, what kind of knowledge does she seek? What made her like Harry to begin with? Did Harry ever like her for more than her âsleek black hairâ (not a direct quote, but Iâm sure itâs described as something to that effect)? I want to knowwwww
Lavender Brown - aka... Ronâs brief, annoying girlfriend? The precursor to Romione? I mean, was this girl even in the D.A.? Maybe she was, but I donât remember, and thatâs the problem. Sheâs a Gryffindor. Sheâs brave, sheâs headstrong, sheâs proud! But sheâs only ever portrayed as overbearing and clingy which SURE, may be some of her traits, because sheâs allowed to have flaws, but thatâs not all she is. I want to see her relationship with Pravati and Hermione, who she roomed with for six years (beyond her annoying Hermione when she dated Ron). But nope! I guess sheâs just another accessory!
Nymphadora Tonks - i.e. Tonks. Sheâs funny and brave and powerful, but we barely get to see her in action (yes, before you ask, i had a crush on her, too). Sheâs interesting, so interesting, because her emotions are often expressed through her appearance, and she undergoes like two full personality shifts throughout the books (itâs worth noting that sheâs also introduced pretty late in the series, book five, i think). Sheâs depressed for a while, then she falls in love, gets married, and has a son (and then dies), and, while it seems like this is a lot of usage (which it is), I canât help but wish we had seen a little more of it all, specifically of her falling in love and of her married life, of her motherhood, before she died.
Xenophilius Lovegood - literallly (i would argue) one of the most interesting characters in the series, despite the fact that (I think) he is only featured heavily in one scene. I would definitely call him a more complex character than Snape. In his one scene, Xenophilius offers the golden trio one of their most important lessons through the Tale of the Three Brothers, the story which ultimately wins them the war against Voldemort. And yet, itâs a trap. Heâs stalling, keeping them around so that Voldyâs goons can come pick them up and presumably kill them, or at least imprison them until Voldy comes âround again. But, and hereâs the important part, he does it to save his beloved daughter. His daughter, who is the only family he has left, after his incredible scientist-witch of a wife died doing what she loved. The Lovegoodâs are a family of inherently good people, yet Xenophilius sides with the very people who took his daughter in a weak effort to get her safely back. His plan wonât work, they wonât return Luna. They DONâT return her, but Xenophilius is fundamentally weak, made weak out of his love, and his fear of losing the last person in the world he has to care about, to protect, to love. Heâs just SO DAMN INTERESTING ughhhhh give me more Xenophilius pleaseeeee
Kingsley Shacklebolt - heâs??? so cool??? Literally heâs just awesome, but we barely see him. He acts as a spy, essentially, when the ministry gets taken over by the death eaters, and helps the order actually get shit done, but heâs just so underused. Idk, I donât have much to say except that heâs awesome and I want more Shacklebolt content
Cedric Diggory - heâs actually talked about a fair amount, so I donât think I need to say much, except that he is literally the nicest guy ever, and, despite Harry actively hating him for like a whole year, he helps him in the Triwizard Tournament and represents Hufflepuff beautifully as being more than just the âmiscellaneous houseâ. But then of course heâs killed before he and Harry can become friends, and before readers get a chance to understand anything about his social status (is he the asshole popular guy or sweet quite guy???) or motivations. Of course.
Percy Weasley - aka MY FAVORITE WEASLEY KID. R*wling did my boy so dirty. Heâs cool because heâs kind of a stuck up academic asshole stereotype, or at least Harry perceives him as such, and then he changes slightly over the years as he and Harry both grow and mature and then it all culminates in his great moment of emotion and humanity! Fredâs death is, without much contest I think, the most devastating death in the whole series (Dobby could admittedly give him a run for his money, though), in part because heâs just so damn sweet and funny and innocent, and in part because right before it we FINALLY get to see Percy smile. He smiles at a dumb joke Fred makes, and then Fred DIES (a well placed death, Iâll admit begrudgingly), and just the juxtaposition of the moment... *chefâs kiss*. And then we never really check back in on Percy, and we donât really get enough closure on that moment. :/
Colin and Dennis Creevy - again, two characters stuffed together, this time because we actually know a fair amount about them and... theyâre kind of the same character. Colin is obsessed with Harry, and so is Dennis. Thatâs about it. I just WISH we got a little more on these kids, on why they felt so drawn to him as this apparently untouchable hero among them. Were they abused? Orphaned? Abandoned? Did they have some sort of trauma in their lives that made them so attached to the idea of a savoir? Or did they simply regard Harry as most little boys might, as a cool sort of action figure character? The world may never know :(((
Susan Bones - God, I wish I had more to say about her. Sheâs sweet, she a hufflepuff, I think she helps Ron at one point in Herbology. Her aunt dies I think. Is she the one who had the rabbit at one point? Idk, sheâs just one of those characters whoâs so far in the background that she almost stands out, and I kinda just wanna know more.
Fawkes - yeah, I know heâs a bird or whatever, but heâs fucking cool, and we get a Fawkes-ex-machina in the second book and then heâs essentially inconsequential for like... forever. I want to know how he and dumbledore bonded, why his feathers in those two specific wands were so attracted to Harry and Tommy boi specifically, other than symbolism uwu. Does Fawkes have a moral compass, or does he simply follow Dumbledoreâs orders? Could his loyalty potentially be changed?
Narcissa Malfoy - please, for the love of god, give the Malfoyâs a chance. At least Draco and Narcissa. Narcissa is essentially the flip side of Xenophiliusâs coin. Her side of the family is shrouded in dark magic, but her priority is keeping her dear son safe. I just want to know her and her inner struggle more intimately, because sheâs such a contradiction, sheâs a death eater who loves and protects, a dark magic user who wants to create something warm and beautiful for her family. Sheâs scared for a husband, a top death eater, one of Voldemortâs personal faves, and scared for her son, who she knows is good at heart but who struggles through the first steps of death eater initiation out of a sense of duty, a duty to her and his father. Sheâs the intimate mother figure, yet sheâs an antagonist, fundamentally speaking. Fascinating.
These are just some I thought of off the top of my head, Iâm sure there are literally hundreds more, from the two guys from the Knightbus to Bathilda Bagshot to Nagini the legend (also wtf happened to her in the Cursed Child?? Nvm, I canât even get into that shithole right now), and I have to admit that I still love Harry Potter, for its characters and itâs incredible world building, though R*wling is a massive piece of terf-y shit.
Itâs important to note that I understand the purpose of flat characters, I understand the purpose of background characters, of undeveloped characters. What Iâm pointing out here is that there was a lot of potential in these characters that was largely squandered because R*wling focused her energy on attempting to redeem Snape without a redemption arch, attempting to redeem Dumbledore with an inadequate one, and refusing to properly redeem Draco despite his well-developed arch, for some fucking reason. If you canât tell, Iâm salty, but Iâm only salty because I care. Ily, have a good day!!
