Writer, photographer, and artist Haneen Salem documents the painful experience of the Al-Kahlout family in north Gaza. She writes,
In northern Gaza, the Al-Kahlot family faced tough conditions but chose to confront them. After a painful displacement journey that turned their lives into a nightmare, they returned to their destroyed home. All that remained was debris, but the family refused to give up. They decided to set up a tent amidst the rubble, turning it into their new shelter.
Before the war, the Al-Kahlot family owned "Al-Manar Studios," specializing in photography and media, and enjoyed a prosperous life. However, at the end of October, their home was destroyed, turning their lives upside down. They lost not only their home but also their company, supplies, and livelihood. They were forced to seek safety and shelter at the Indonesian Hospital after being displaced.
They couldn't find safety even at the hospital, as the occupation forces besieged it. The family endured horrific days, with some members sustaining injuries. Tragically, they lost their son, Mohammad, just moments after he distributed sweets to the wounded in the hospital. This happened following an announcement about a truce, but the hospital was bombed as a target.

...you have instilled A Thought in me, do we even know that Tock was sent by Salem? Afaik there's never been any in-text evidence beyond the assumption that Salem wanted to wipe out SEWs, and I'm not aware of any word-of-god that she was an agent of Salem? Like, our only two "data points" on Salem hunting SEWs is Tock, who we only know was working for someone, and the hound-man, who we know literally nothing about.
I'm about as convinced as can be that Salem has, in fact, spent most of her time just chilling in exile, but I struggle to fully square that with hunting SEWs - what if even that is just another thing Ozma blames on her out of paranoia?
we do, per her amity arena card:
Tock was a proud faunus. She was a predator, a born hunter. It wasn't enough to merely have the green scales, she was a CROC. That meant she needed a nasty bite. It was a tad uncomfortable at times, sure, and took a lot more flossing than she liked, but the looks on her victims' faces when suddenly facing her sharpened metal teeth was worth it. every. time. Master Salem did always warn her, though, to finish her prey before her invulnerability wore off. After all, her aura shattering after those heart pounding sixty seconds was a dangerous price to pay. Still, she could never give up playing with her food, as that was the privilege of a predator, and nothing made Tock feel more alive …than dancing with Death.
and in all fairness to ozma: he’s not the one who proposed that salem has been hunting down silver-eyed warriors. maria’s father* believed that… well, “how could such powerful bloodlines be so rare, unless something was actively seeking to destroy them?” and ruby hears that and goes “salem.”
(*who cannot have been ozma, because maria was among the first generation of huntsmen and her father an old soldier who would’ve been a contemporary of the king of vale)
two obvious flaws in that reasoning:
sometimes a trait is just rare. silver eyes seem to originate from ozma when he has children with partners other than salem, and we know of… two. out of all the lives of his that we’ve glimpsed (four in the lost fable, three in the infinite man, the hermit-wizard, the king of vale, ozpin) only one had children. say it’s been four thousand years and ozma reincarnates, on average, once per century: that’s forty lives. if we’re shown a rough approximation of how often this man has reproduced, he’s only had children in four of them. across four thousand years. no shit they’re rare!
silver eyes are a genetically heritable trait that marks people born with them as destined to “lead the life of a warrior,” to live and die fighting grimm. “unless something was actively seeking to destroy them” YOU MEAN LIKE THE MONSTERS? THE MONSTERS THAT SILVER-EYED WARRIORS ARE LEGENDARY FOR HUNTING? again, no shit it’s a rare trait! warriors, famously, are a lot more likely than most to die young.
add in that oz seems happy to recruit silver-eyed warriors and must know there’s a kernel of truth in the stories, but really doesn’t seem to know much of anything useful—man didn’t so much as mention ruby’s eyes once in v5, he was more concerned with getting her proficient in hand-to-hand combat—and it what it really looks like is that the myths appeal to him as symbols. silver warriors are pure, incorruptible, destined heroes… smaller, more honest souls… et cetera.
it’s the actual silver-eyed warriors going “i can do WHAT NOW with my eyes!? how can this power be so rare, so obscure?”
anyway. our data points are:
maria, a legendary silver-eyed huntress whom salem definitively sent tock to assassinate something like 40-50 years ago
hound guy (??????????)
hazel saying of silver-eyed warriors “we’ve dealt with their kind before,” which might be in reference to hound guy.
summer rose, who joined salem.
not a data point strictly speaking, but worth taking into account: silver eyes are said over and over again to be very rare, so salem logically can’t be offing them by the score, nor keeping dozens locked up in a laboratory somewhere. there just aren’t enough of them!
also not strictly a data point: two empty seats at salem’s table, one of them accounted for by summer rose. if summer is working for salem of her own volition, then salem isn’t averse to working alongside silver-eyes; ergo, her problem with them must be with what most of them do, which is kill grimm.
salem is grimm. the grimm have been her only real companions for thousands of years. it is also fairly obvious at this point that grimm are not mindless soulless killing machines, because they keep behaving like emotional beings with a high degree of social organization and far more individuality than they’re given credit for. salem—
Tumblr media
—cares about them. it tracks that she’d assassinate silver-eyed warriors who gained the kind of prominence maria did. i think it’s probably worth noting that the one absolute certainty it-is-what-it-looks-like data point in regard to salem killing silver-eyed warriors is… a legendary huntress who had nothing to do with ozpin or his conspiracy but went around calling herself the grimm reaper.
ignoring ozma’s imaginary shadow war whilst living in exile doesn’t necessarily mean salem wasn’t doing anything bad at all; just that whatever she got up to didn’t have anything to do with him.
that she targeted maria rather than anyone affiliated with oz in and of itself is an implication that she wasn’t paying much attention to him at the time; conversely, there hasn’t been so much as a hint that salem ever sent anyone to assassinate summer, ozpin’s token silver-eyed warrior, in the years before summer found her. and then hound guy is just a pile of question marks punctuated by an empty chair and me squinting at the lovecraft story very hard; if nothing else, the sixth empty seat at her table and the implied timeline of cinder being the impetus for that experiment gives me pause.

I think I finally made y’all wait long enough (and procrastinated on writing this long enough) so you finally get Salem posting part 2!! I also changed up her design a lil very recently! It’s not much though, just more curl to her hair and a gemstone on her hat that resembles a gemstone on the Shadow Queen. I have the art on my art blog too, but here it is! I made the background myself too based off of a completely new location in my TTYD lore :3
Tumblr media
So without further ado, lemme describe what it would be like if Salem was in TTYD!
Salem the Shadow Siren: Sidequest
Before chapter 4, if you talk with some NPCs, they speak of a lanky ghost-like creature that travels alone and seems to be afraid of its own shadow. It’s supposed to be vague for now but it’s foreshadowing to Salem. There will be a mandatory cutscene between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 which you will see Salem physically for the first time in the Rogueport Underground. She’ll mutter to herself about how cruel her mother is for looming over her like this. Salem asks nobody why can’t she just live in peace and that the end will come soon. She starts rambling to herself about a garden she needs to keep up with in Petal Meadows. It will be then, mid sentence, that Salem notices the player. The room turns pitch black and then Salem is gone. You will have to remember this information after you get Vivian, because her veil ability is needed to make Salem comfortable enough to appear in her first secluded location in Petal Meadows. If you decide to pursue her, that's when the sidequest truly begins. Your second encounter with Salem in Petal Meadows will leave her shocked, as she is very scared of Vivian. Sadly your partner does not know much about Salem, but the physical similarities does confirm that Vivian and Salem are both Shadow Sirens, and thus related. Salem is scared that Vivian will try to drag her back home, or get Beldam to drag her back home. Confusion ensues on how Salem knows the Three Shadows, but Vivian hardly heard about Salem. Despite her kind nature, the lanky siren pleads to not hurt her plants and leave. A choice prompt will show up >Okay, we’ll get going. >Where is your home? If pestered enough about where Salem used to live she will get upset with you, and dim the lights. When you can see again and Salem is gone. Picking the first option will just make this go quicker. There is a note on the ground that tells you that she has a garden to tend to in Keelhaul Key. And no, you can’t actually hurt the pretty flowers Salem planted, that would just be rude. :( As you progress through the game new garden locations will open up, backtracking, yada yada yada. She sticks around for longer each time you see her, and you learn more about her. There’s a point where a battle is initiated, but Salem doesn’t attack, and after a few turns she flees. If Goombella uses tattle, her stats will be illegible, and not much is known about Salem. Once you have access to the Palace of Shadow…if you have successfully done all of Salem’s encounters, she will send Mario an email to meet her at her favorite place in the world: Shrinking Violet Summit. (There’s a new pipe that opens up that will lead you directly to the place, and it’s not very big either. This is more just to see how beautiful the place is and set up something important. This time you won’t need Vivian to have Salem appear in the room she’s in, she will be there waiting for you to talk to her. And if you do, she will thank Mario (and Vivian) for helping her gather the courage to open up. She’s aware that you opened the Palace of Shadow, and decides to tell you everything. The Mother she keeps talking about, is in fact the Shadow Queen. A long time ago, the demon decided she wanted to raise an heir to inherit her power and rule the world in case anything bad happened to her. That’s how Salem was born. In truth, she is over 1000 years old, and was there to witness the Shadow Queen sink the ancient Rogueport and create the Crystal Stars.  She did not however, witness the four heroes defeat her mother and seal her away. For the longest time, being the Shadow Queen’s daughter did not feel right. She was created to help drown the world in darkness…but she saw the light, the beauty of Earth. Salem decided enough was enough….and ran away from the demon. The Shadow Queen let her live…Salem does not know why. (It is revealed when you face SQ there is further context that she wanted Salem to orchestrate her return to prove that letting her live despite her traitorous actions was the right decision, not Beldam.)
Salem has known Beldam for a long time, and feared her loyalty to her mother. But she wasn’t aware that Marilyn and Vivian were created. She lived in fear of Beldam finding her and dragging her back to the Palace.
The partner Mario brought out will ask if Salem will come with them to confront the Shadow Queen. But….despite everything, she says she can’t. Salem is afraid to fight. But, she won’t leave you empty handed, and will give you a Jelly Ultra as a sendoff gift to help with their fight with her mother. (Which fun fact, that would be the only one you can get for free without needing to make a recipe! So she gives you something really valuable for all the trouble!)
The even cooler part is, she has one last email to send after Mario defeats the Shadow Queen. She asks him to meet her at Shrinking Violet Summit again, and with a newfound determination…Salem learns that she needs to stand up for herself. She will forever live with the regret of not facing the Shadow Queen herself…but she will try her best to make things right. She asks Mario if he would like to fight her, and reveals that she’s pretty tough. People used to fear her…instead of her fearing everything.
Waboom! Surprise she’s a superboss! You’re basically facing a Shadow Queen EX, with some differences in Salem’s attacks. But if you can defeat her, she will become recruitable as a post game partner!!
I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m gonna have to make a part 3…this was even longer than my last post about Salem SOBBB
But this next part will be about what she’s like as a partner, and finally addressing her likes, dislikes, personality, etc.
I will see you tomorrow at noon folks :3

More Not-Blogtober for What Doesn't Ail Ya
In my latest experiment with manipulating this content mill to force my thoughts on an unsuspecting public, I say my piece about what makes Rob Zombie's movies uniquely important--and it's not all the nerdy references or the extreme sex and violence, or any of the usual stuff people surface. To quote Nurse Forsythe, "even old flesh is erotic flesh," and Zombie definitely got that particular memo:
The truth is that I don't even necessarily like everything I write about, despite my often positive/SEO-friendly tone. There's only one Rob Zombie movie that I absolutely love all of, and a few others with parts I enjoy--but the question of quality often has to take a back seat to the question of what something means, why it happens, what has brought it into public awareness. Another good example of this is the TERRIFIER series, which I really do not enjoy, though I sort of talked myself into appreciating it when I dealt with it for Blogtober a couple years ago. It doesn't take a genius to come up with the whole Evil Santa gag, but when I started connecting the dots I thought...is Evil Santa actually a time-honored anti-censorship avenger? I think this is possible; I think that, possibly, the horror world needs to formally institute ax-swinging Kris Kringle as a specific avatar of free speech:
To be totally honest I feel a little tired just knowing that I'm going to have to watch this movie in October, but the series does have its qualities. The most embarrassing revelation from my previous series rewatch (which I really don't think I can repeat) is that I really like TERRIFIER 2's popular novelty sunglasses scene. David Howard Thornton is a good clown and he makes it really funny, without diluting how actually-scary the scene is; being in a public place during business hours should feel safe, but it really doesn't here since any false move can set off Art and then he'll remind everyone that he's a supernatural being and strangely inescapable. But anyway, I was amused to see new novelty shades in the TERRIFIER 3 trailer, obviously Damien Leone realized that there's something there...for some reason. They should do a New Year's movie for TERRIFIER 4, there's always lots of gag glasses circulating around then.
