Yes some kids just naturally grow up and are more responsible people. This does not mean give them adult sized responsibilities, it means give them age appropriate responsibilities and independence.
#jasper rambles#i grew up being my parents little helper. but when my mom got sick it went from normal kid helper to baby sitting my brothers at least a few#hours every day at age 12/13/14. that is parenting. that is daycare. my family didnt have other options but like#its WILD to look at my brothers who are at ages i was while my family was on the midst of trauma and realize just how small and young i was#whilst literally helping raise my brothers. now to my parents credit. if my mom hadnt been terminally ill i doubt they would have let it get#that far. but the fact of the matter is she WAS terminally ill and ive been grown up for way too long for someone who is barely a few years#into college. i missed being a kid. thats one of the reasons i love my friends i get to do silly goofy stuff and just relax

Hey there! Can I request a hurt Higgs story with a concerned Fragile? 🥺🥰
@argetlam007
Coming right the fuck up! :D Have a Bitchin’ Christmas you beautiful person!
Fragile arrived at Higgs’s bunker with supplies in hand. She carefully made her way inside the terminal, and then proceeded to go through the door leading down to Higgs’s residency. Despite how much he cleaned up the place, Fragile couldn’t get the smell of stale pizza boxes out of her nose. She always wondered why he had such fancies for them. Pizza was never something she took a particular liking too, but back when they were business partners, it was something Higgs purchased for them regularly when they had their meetings. Fragile chalked it up to some form of childhood comfort that Higgs would never admit to.
Venturing down into the lair of the former beast, Fragile took in a deep breath and found Higgs’s was sitting in the new bed he purchased for himself. His back was pressed to the wall as his breathing labored. He meekly turned his head to look towards her direction. A sense of awe transpired over his features.
“Didn’t think you’d come back,” Higgs said quietly as he swallowed, trying to stifle a cough. Fragile sighed and shrugged.
“I know you, Higgs. The last thing you’d do is take care of yourself.”
“Look at you gettin’ all sentimental over me. You finally decided to chisel some ice off your heart?” Higgs remarked sarcastically, his lip pulling into a tired smirk as Fragile did her best not to smile. She shook her head, trying to play it off.
“Funny you should mention that. You might need some before your brain overheats.” Fragile countered, finally putting the cargo box down that had the supplies Higgs was going to need.
Fragile looked around the bunker in silence, seeking out a stool or something she could sit on while tending to Higgs’s injuries. He had gotten into a turf war with MULEs, and never being much of a fighter, got his ass handed to him. Fragile had been occasionally meeting up with Higgs, checking on his progress since then. She owed him that much considering he saved her life from said MULEs, having been ambushed on a delivery. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect considering Fragile was ill-prepared, to say the least this time around.
Coming across an old chair, Fragile pulled it up to the bed and Higgs adjusted then began to pull off his shirt, exposing his chest and the various cuts and bruises, patched with bandages that painted his form. He swallowed nervously, still not used to this part of the treatment Fragile had cooked up for him. Higgs didn’t like being vulnerable, and in a way, considering what he had put her through in regards to her body, this was karma putting him in his proper place.
Higgs let out a cough as Fragile’s eyes roamed over his body, her gaze calculating as she observed how far along Higgs was healing.
“Am I dying, doc?” Higgs asked playfully as Fragile’s eyes briefly met with his before lifting up some of the bandages, causing Higgs to wince.
“There’s some infection, but once I give you the medicine it should clear up in a few days.” Fragile said.
“Didn’t you tell me that last time you were here?” Higgs asked while Fragile opened up the cargo box and began to pull out bottles of pills and other medicinal goods. Higgs carefully observed everything she pulled out while keeping still, not wanting to hurt himself further. He could take the pain, Higgs was accustomed to it, but being sick on top of it all had been a struggle even for the likes of him.
“I might have.” Fragile commented, then started cleaning the wounds on his abdomen. Higgs winced and let out a pained laugh at her response.
“You tryin’ to give me false hope?” Higgs asked.
“Maybe. You’ll never know.” For once in what felt like an eternity, Fragile smiled up at him. It was brief, maybe even less than a millisecond, but Higgs dedicated it to his memory. His own lips forming into a satisfied grin before he winced, his body tensing up from the stings.
“Try to hold still. I know it hurts.” Fragile reassured him, occasionally looking at his face to see his reactions. She tried to make her movements gentle, but quick enough to where Higgs didn’t have to endure too much pain on his end. Fragile sighed from time to time as she cleaned, then worked her way to the gashes in his upper chest. He was quite lucky he didn’t need stitches, but regardless, Fragile had brought in a kit just in case.
“I’m a little dizzy. I feel like I got pressure building up behind my eyes.” Higgs remarked his tone honest which surprised Fragile. She was prepared for more bantering on his end, so the sincerity took her aback.
“Close your eyes. That always helps when I get migraines.”
“You get migraines?” Higgs quirked a brow, looking at Fragile as she nodded.
“I get them often. Avoiding light and sleeping it off helps me.”
“Well, shit.” Higgs remarked with a tired chuckle as Fragile stared at him. He took a moment to clear his throat, swallowing some mucus that had built up in his mouth. “I’ve known you for a long time and I never took you for someone with headache problems.”
“You sound a little too enthusiastic to hear that.” Fragile said as Higgs scoffed, deciding not to say anything further on the matter. He was thankful when Fragile finished up cleaning the wounds and started throwing another set of bandages on after applying medicine to each cut. The cool liquid made Higgs tremble from the stinging sensations, but Fragile’s touch soothed them over. He took her advice to heart and closed his eyes. His breathing becoming more stable as time went on despite whatever subconscious apprehensions he had towards his former business partner touching him.
Higgs was nearly asleep until he heard Fragile rummage through the box, pulling out an IV, tube, and a large needle. His eyes widened briefly as he shook his head.
“No.”
“Higgs,”
“I said no.” His tone was firm this time around as he looked at Fragile. There was a vulnerability in his blue eyes that reminded her of when she confronted him on the beach, her hands cradling his face before she decked his lights out. As much as Higgs deserved it back then, seeing him now with a similar gaze, made Fragile feel somewhat guilty.
“Higgs, you’re dehydrated. You’re running a fever, and you have an infection. As much as you like to play off you have a death wish, we both know better.” Fragile said as a matter of fact, her voice soft as she could see he was working things out in his head despite his eyes fixated on her like a wounded animal.
“I’m not your father.” Fragile said, and Higgs blinked a few times as he stared at the IV in her hands, the needle too as if it were going to jump at him like a bug. He forced himself to give a nod, taking in a deep breath as Fragile gently took Higgs’s left arm and flipped it over. She found a vein in the upper part and quickly jabbed the needle under his flesh. The way his face contorted as he muttered curses under his breath made Fragile comfort him as she rubbed at the pained spot. Her spare hand putting the IV up on a small stand and then brushing some strands of hair from his face.
“Shh. It’s okay. Everything’s going to work out.” Fragile reassured him as Higgs’s arm pulsated while he hissed, feeling the liquid from the IV beginning to enter his system. He could taste metallic on his tongue accompanied by something bitter that reminded Higgs of the time he had eaten a mouth full of ants when rations had run low on a delivery run. He grimaced thinking about it as Fragile took a few moments to look him over before she got up.
Fragile pulled an extra blanket out of the box, covering Higgs up with it along with the others he had.
“Any chance you’ll give me a kiss and tuck me in?” Higgs asked teasingly, trying to be a smartass to placate his own insecurities and childhood trauma reeling its ugly head in his mind.
Fragile shook her head at the remark, once more, not wanting to smile but her mouth betrayed her.
“You should get some rest. You’ll feel better soon. I’ll get a bath ready for you in the other room. I’ll check on you in a little while.”
Higgs quietly watched as Fragile packed up everything and then got ready to venture into the other room of his bunker.
“Fragile, wait.” Higgs pleaded, causing her turn around.
“Yeah?”
“It’s nothing, but thank you.”
Higgs was full of surprises, but in Fragile’s mind, he was on quite the streak. Sighing she went back over to the bed, her hand reaching out to his face. Higgs flinched for obvious reasons and her fingers retreated back only to slowly inch forward and cup his right cheek. Her thumb caressed over the scruff that was overtaking his skin as her eyes roamed over his. He looked like a child then, being cared for the first time. Higgs closed his eyes and leaned into her hand.
“Do you think I could ever make it alright for us?” Higgs asked quietly, and Fragile’s touch gently retreated away. He asked a good question, but nonetheless, it put her mind into a predicament. Honestly, considering what he had put her through, Fragile didn’t want to give Higgs another chance. She already gave Higgs one at the beach by not shooting him. Still, her mind brought up memories from before Amelie had come into the picture.
Higgs was someone Fragile had counted on. His charisma, the way he valued his work, the way he motivated others in their respective companies, made him seem like a beacon of light in a dark room. She missed how hopeful he was, and how hopeful he made her feel about things. She missed her best friend.
“Don’t die on me, okay?” Fragile requested as Higgs nodded at her. It wasn’t the answer he was wanting to hear, but her words gave him a slither of hope of something to look forward to when he recovered. Higgs closed his eyes yet again after moving his body down the bed, getting comfortable for rest.
“No promises.” Higgs murmured playfully before his eyes started to grow heavy from the headaches and from Fragile tending to his injuries. When he passed out, Fragile swallowed and closed her own eyes. Her hands reaching up to wipe the sweat forming on her brow. There was a lot on her mind, so many concerns, and worries not just for Higgs, but herself.
She got up, swallowed her pride, and went to go draw the bath for Higgs like she said. The whole time, thinking about how they were going to move forward.

Okay I am super curious...what happened with Hamilton? I saw that post and felt like I left my body in search for understanding
Hokay so I dont know all of the exact details, since I’m staying far far away from Hamilton and everything to do with it (things that skirt the lines between fiction and nonfiction like that scare me //bricked) but basically there was a person named Isra who supposedly was a HIV-positive lesbian who lived in India with her also HIV-positive wife. Due to this identity, she made a blog called hivliving and made a Hamilton au fanfiction where the characters were living with HIV. She basically used this identity as a non-white trans lesbian living with HIV to justify her writing the fanfiction, because yknow, that’s how tumblr works. You’re always insensitive and bigoted 24/7 no matter what you do or you’re completely incapable of being offensive if you’re part of the minority.
Anyways, this went on for quite some time; its only been since the callout post that it was in the major public sphere, but the person behind hivliving existed on the internet for quite some time. “Isra” also had a main called allolesbean, and her supposed wife I believe also had an account (or it was a friend of hers, one of the two, im not sure which), also run by the person behind hivliving. At first allolesbean claimed that she stole someone else’s life story, a friend of her friend’s or something, but eventually I believe the person who made the initial callout post determined that Isra didn’t exist and there was no one that this person based her personas off of. It was, however, determined that the person behind these accounts was a white American girl going into college. One of the things linking to this was the fact that she used a money donating system that wasn’t valid in India, despite the fact that there are plenty of systems for donating and transferring money that ARE valid in india. Then some other shit happened, pretty sure the callout-er threatened to doxx her to get her to talk and/or refund the money she got from donations but I dont remember the exact details. Oh yeah she took donations too, evident by the money thing I was talking about before. I dont know how many donations she got, but the person who called her out said that she should refund the money.
But lets go back to the person who called her out. There were rumors that the person who called hivliving out was not so innocent themselves. There were distant memories of the person who called hivliving out writing a cannibal mermaid au Hamilton fanfiction. Yup. I believe some people also remembered allolesbean and her friends harassing said callout-er into deleting the fanfic since it was “insensitive”. Which no shit, but anyways…
Someone went and searched for proof that callout-er had written this fanfiction. To their surprise, it appeared the cannibal mermaid au Hamilton fanfiction was still up, but was also linked to a different account. So the person doing the research decided to ask the person behind the fanfiction that was still up about the drama. The person confirmed that they were indeed a different person, but that the callout-er HAD written a cannibal mermaid au Hamilton fanfiction and deleted it in the past, reiterating the rumors that had been floating around. However, callout-er’s cannibal mermaid au hamilton fanfiction also involved a real-life person, the person behind the Hamilton musicals.
The person who was doing this research eventually pieced together that the callout-er made the callout post/did the research to get revenge on allolesbean and her friends for harassing them and forcing them to delete their fanfiction. After this was leaked, the callout-er deleted their posts on the subject (and presumably deleted their blog entirely; the blog is still up and I never saw it down, however all posts were deleted and images/themes removed and the header changed to “CANNIBAL MERMAID FANFIC” so im assuming someone hijacked it for lols) and…well that’s about where we’re at now.
So basically, the main things to take away from this are:
1. a bored white girl faked being at least two separate people living in a completely different country and continent. She faked a terminal illness to get donations, and she presumably faked her sexuality and gender identity as well.
2. another bored individual wanted revenge for said bored white girl cyberbulling them for making an extremely problematic fanfiction, so they doxxed her
3. at least one hamilton HIV au fanfiction exists
4. at least two Cannibal Mermaid Hamilton au fanfics exist
5. shit like this is why I have depression but its also one of the few things that can bring me joy anymore
6. hamilton was a mistake
And sources because I wasn’t even sure of half this shit until I did some half-assed research following up on some blogs I’ve seen posting about it:
about what hivliving/allolesbean did: https://ratspotting.tumblr.com/post/166850440970/wait-can-you-please-explain-in-a-short-paragraph (the confession links still work, however unfortunately their links to the original callout posts no longer work since, as i said, the callout blog was deleted. I did see the callout posts when they were up though, so there was legitimate evidence backing up their claims.
about the callout-er: http://benepla.tumblr.com/post/166869386991/ive-read-ur-posts-on-the-allolesbean-thing-and-god(not sourced since OP was the one who found this information out, but I’m hoping what they said was true. I did google “cannibal mermaid hamilton fanfiction” and got a result, so at least that part of what they said was true, so I’m gonna trust them.)
PS: there’s something fishy to me about the fact that hivliving and alllolesbean admitted the errors of their ways and left their blogs active instead of just deleting themselves from the face of the internet. She didn’t even delete one or the other, she just did the same thing on both, and even though its been a day or two she hasn’t deleted them. Unfortunately, I dont have the time or energy to go down that rabbit hole. If someone else would like to see if they can find a reason for that, I’d love to know what you find, but I wouldnt even know where to start with that can of worms. I’m not a doxxer dude
#stormy speaks#hamilton hiv fanfiction#hamilton mermaid cannibal fanfiction#hamilton drama#tagging so hopefully other people can find this if they're looking for information

Passive-Aggressive Partnership
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 @coveofmemories
Part 7
-----
“Is that so?” Rossi said, his trademarked calm, cool and collected nature taking over despite the fact that this woman was nothing like they’d ever encountered before.
Nothing but a small smirk painted the corner of her mouth. It was extremely unsettling, even for a veteran like Rossi. “I’m 32 years old. I’ve been doing this for years. No one caught on.”
“Because you were too smart,” he said. “What happened? You slip up?” The look in her eyes went from cocky to fiery in milliseconds. Despite her being different than most other unsubs they came across in many ways, in other ways, she was so stereotypical it was almost comical. After more than 30 years on the job, Rossi knew what to say and how to say it to make any unsub sing the song of their crimes.
He could play her like a fiddle, but in this case it seemed like she wanted to be played.
“Purposefully, yes. I just got so used to doing it, I got bored. I don’t care anymore if anyone knows.” If she was 32 years old and had become a licensed nurse at 22, she could have been doing this for nearly a decade. He asked her how long, and she’d confirmed his suspicions. A decade of killing.
“It started with your mother, didn’t it? The not caring? When she died two years ago?” She only nodded her head.
“Tell me about what you’ve done. When you first started,” Rossi said. “What made you start killing?”
Despite the talk they’d had thus far, she hadn’t technically admitted anything, and given the physical evidence they had with their four victims, it would be hard to prove she was the one that killed Jennifer Valesky. But a confession would be the nail in her coffin and she seemed willing to hammer it in herself. “It started like a lot of people like me...” she said.
-----
On the opposite side of the glass, the rest of the team stared in awe. “She started as an angel of mercy,” Reid said, just as Heidi confirmed it. Apparently, she was under the delusion that she was helping people. She started in a hospital right after she graduated and would periodically “ease the suffering” as she claimed, of people that were terminally ill.
“The first person I ever killed asked me to do it,” she said, surprising everyone outside, as well as Rossi.
“Is that so?”
Her name was Gertrude Singer. She was terminally ill with cancer of the bone, and she didn’t have much time left. She was also in excruciating pain, so she asked Heidi to end her suffering. “I figured she wanted to die,” she said. “She was going to die. Why shouldn’t she have been allowed to end her pain? I injected an air bubble into her IV. Within the day she was gone. That’s how it started - with her and others like her. However, she was the only one that asked. When I realized I was the one who had actually taken her life...I felt this indescribable feeling, and I wanted more of it.”
“What kind of feeling?” JJ said out loud.
Reid didn’t want to say the answer. But he knew. Sometimes he was afraid of how well he could read people. “Power.”
“It was intoxicating,” she crooned, sending shivers up Emily’s spine. Thank god Garcia wasn’t here to hear this, because she’d be screaming and running to the shower for a proper scrubbing of her body and brain. “That feeling of watching someone’s life leave them and knowing you did it? Nothing like it.”
“But something changed when your mother died, didn’t it?” Rossi asked. Normally, the team would still be trying to gather evidence at this stage, but that was because confessions weren’t so easily come by. So much about this case was different. Reid wasn’t affected by every unsub anymore, but this one was unsettling; she’d probably stay with him for a long time.
The vibrating against his skin pulled him out his head. “Something up?” JJ asked.
“It’s Y/N,” he said. “I’ll be right back. How are you?” As he walked outside to take the call, he could hear the slithering of her voice and it made his skin crawl.
“I’m fine. Wish we could be going on another date, but otherwise okay. You?”
Goosebumps traveled up his spine as he recalled the unsub’s words. “Our killer is a woman. An angel of death, and she’s been killing for years. She...I don’t know why she’s getting to me given all the people we’ve come into contact with, but she is.”
“I’ll try and take your mind off things when you get back,” she said.
“Is that a promise?”
“Absolutely,” she said. “I’ll let you get back to things. Stay strong...you know, stubborn. Like you normally do.”
“Oh, shut up,” he laughed as he said goodbye and hung up the phone. It was a good thing he’d taken that call, because as soon as he returned to the glass partition outside the interrogation room, her voice crawled back up his skin.
“When my mother had her appendix out she was insufferable,” Heidi started again. “She was not a nice woman and when she had to depend on others it was even worse. Nothing I did was good enough. I had been killing people who were terminal for eight years at that point, but that night, when she just wouldn’t let up...that was the first time I felt like killing, even though she would’ve been perfectly healthy.”
“So your mother is the reason you started killing healthy people rather than the terminally ill,” Rossi continued. One might say he was giving her the rope the hang herself with, but she knew exactly what she was saying. It was purely conversation at this point.
Outside the room, Spencer wished this would end, so they could go home. He needed to get out of his head. He needed to get her out of his head. “Yes,” she said. “Any drug addict will tell you that over time, you need more and more of the drug to get high. Killing was my drug, so after a while, killing people who needed it, who were in pain - that wasn’t enough. I needed more, so I started with my mother. I used antifreeze, like Jennifer Valesky.”
Well there was the confirmation they needed for one of their current victims. “Is that all you used? That and air bubbles?” Rossi wondered.
“No,” she laughed. She laughed. Reid could barely contain himself. “I used whatever I thought might go undetected until a couple weeks ago. Arsenic, cyanide, smothering, air bubbles, antifreeze...it didn’t matter. But a couple weeks ago I realize it was never going to be enough. That’s why I decided to get caught. Tell my story. And let the justice system do whatever it was going to do. Like I said, Agent Rossi. I’m tired.”
That was really all they needed to hear. “So you also killed Geraldine, Harvey and George?”
“Yes,” she said. “I’ve had enough. Because it’s never going to be enough.”
“Last question.” it was the one that everyone had on their minds. After 10 years of this, did she even know how many people she’d killed? Rossi asked her and she looked up, staring into the glass, knowing that there were people behind it.
“Honestly, I lost count after 228. That’s when I got bored.”
-----
On the plane back, no one really said anything. What could you say about someone who had almost gleefully claimed to have taken over 200 lives?
“So what are you doing when we get back?” Morgan asked, shaking his head to try and get Heidi’s voice out of his head.
“Going out with Y/N,” Reid replied. “I need to not stay home and think about this. What about you?”
“Sleep.”
“Ditto,” he heard from Emily, JJ and Hotch. Rossi would probably end up staying up and having a smoke.
After another hour, they were home and he was on his way to Y/N’s apartment.
“Hey, stubborn,” she laughed. “You okay?”
He wasn’t, but he didn’t know why. What about her had rubbed him so the wrong way? Her smile dropped as she realized something was wrong. “Come here,” she whispered, enveloping him in her arms. “Do you want to come inside?”
Her lips grazed his as she brought him inside, shutting the door behind her. “Yes.”

chae somin
24, homestay part-timer from jeju-do, south korea
homestay
somin’s eyes are tired and her heart is as heavy as the bags that she’s dragging along the ground. she hadn’t expected to be making any kind of journey on foot, but she supposes it’s her own fault — that damn temper had done her in again. it always did, somehow. but, at least her traveling partner had had the decency ( even if it wasn’t intentional ) to drop her off near homestay. she’d never been there herself, but she knew of it; she figured everyone in the area did. and if the rumors were true, it was a decent place. decent would do for now, until she could figure out where to go from here.
she knocks on the door three hard times, a sound that’s almost threatening, and when the door opens, she’s met by the kindest eyes she’s ever seen. there she stands, a girl of barely eighteen with the looks of a street rat ready to fight, and she finds no judgement in the woman. not even an ounce. she introduces herself as lee sunyoung, and somin finds herself thinking that even her name sounds warm.
“i’m… in a little bit of a predicament. i thought i had somewhere to stay, but i actually… don’t, and i heard that this place hosts guests? unless i’m in the wrong place. if so, that’s… my bad,” somin speaks, finding it hard to smile but trying to do so, anyway, so she looks at least slightly less troublesome. she prepares herself to be turned away, feels it coming before she can even finish explaining herself.
but the response that she gets is one of the first acts of pure kindness she’s experienced. it comes as a confirmation that yes, she is in the right place, and if she’ll come on in, they’ll get her situated. somin feels a weight lift off of both her heart and her shoulders, and she doesn’t realize it now, but in time, the place will become her second home.
bio
( tw: adultery, terminal illness )
i.
a parent will never admit that they have a favorite child, but a child will have no shame in picking a favorite parent. chae somin is no different.
she favors her dad because he never scolds her when she runs barefoot through grass and tracks mud into the house, and he never complains when she doesn’t eat her vegetables. plus, any time she asks, he lifts her onto his shoulders, and she feels like she’s the tallest person in the world. she feels untouchable, knows she’s untouchable, because he’ll never let anyone hurt her.
he smells like safety, looks like safety. whereas her mother smells like sweat and looks like uncertainty, and she’s never home, always tending to fields elsewhere. somin respects her, but it’s a completely different feeling. when she looks at her mom, there are no promises stamped in gold. there are no promises at all.
ii.
but maybe there are no promises anywhere.
somin is nine when her dad packs his things and announces that he’s moving to seoul for work. almost before he can get a single sentence out, somin is in tears, both of her hands holding on to one of his. “why can’t i go with you?” she cries, and both he and her mother take turns explaining that it’s better to raise a child here, further away from the city. there are too many dangers in the city.
she doesn’t get it, because he’s never cared about danger before. and even though he assures her that he’s not leaving her behind, not leaving the family behind, she feels like she’s saying goodbye forever when she waves at him as he leaves.
iii.
somin’s mother does her best to raise her, but her best isn’t quite enough… or maybe it’s too much.
she knows that going from living with both parents to only living with one is a big adjustment, and she overcompensates. she’s always faded into the background before, but now she smothers somin with love, and above that, with protection. she won’t let her leave the house without shoes on under any circumstances, won’t let her go down to the shore unsupervised, won’t even let her climb trees.
of course, somin still does these things, and her mother’s not oblivious; it’s like clockwork the way she always seems to catch a cold when the ground is particularly wet, and her legs and elbows are always scraped or bruised from bumps and tumbles while climbing.
“i know you think my rules are unfair, but i’m just trying to keep you safe, somin.”
iv.
she’s fourteen when the truth finally comes out, and it wounds both her and her mother beyond repair.
promises that had seemed so pure are left shattered around their feet, the vandals being a woman much younger and much prettier than his wife and a young girl who’s taken somin’s place in her dad’s life. somin’s mother reacts with a kind of tired resignation and she tries to hide the tears in her eyes. somin, on the other hand, reacts with anger. anger at him for ever leaving to begin with, for forgetting what he had in jeju, and at her for not making him love her enough to stay. for letting it happen. she doesn’t realize how unfair it is at the time, and she spits words of venom that will never leave her mother’s mind.
“i wish you were the one who had left.”
v.
she’s always liked art, but now she finds solace in it. she tries to sell her work and offer commissions, but her lines are too sharp, her colors too murky. there seems to be anger emanating from even her most peaceful pieces, and she can never find anyone who likes that feeling enough to spend money on it. so half-filled canvases pile up in her home, all of them abandoned before completion.
maybe she’s more like her father than she thinks.
vi.
her reputation suffers a downward spiral as she starts acting out in class and hanging out with the wrong crowd. she rolls her eyes when teachers try to tell her what to do and she disrespects those who are the kindest to her.
everyone wonders what’s happened to her, but they don’t have to wonder for long, because gossip spreads fast in tight-knit communities. before long, everyone knows what’s happened, and she thinks she hates the pity even more than she hates the situation itself. she snarls at people who try to offer friendship in the difficult time, seeks comfort in all the wrong ones.
she smokes her first cigarette at age fifteen in the passenger seat of an older boy’s car. he tells her he knows how it feels, and she asks, “how fast can this thing go?”
vii.
her rebellious phase peaks when she’s eighteen and she can no longer handle the ever-present reminders of her father and the air of sadness that follows. she leaves a note telling her mother not to worry, that she’s a big girl now, and she runs away with that same boy.
they have plans to go to seoul, or maybe busan — just somewhere else. somewhere better, where they can be whoever they want to be without having to worry about the past creeping up. but, somin’s always been so good at picking fights and she accidentally picks one with him before they even reach the city limits. he pulls to the side of the road, tells her to learn to keep her mouth shut or get the hell out.
she gets the hell out. and by fate, she stumbles upon homestay. a place that welcomes her with open arms as if she’s an old friend. for a girl like her, it’s everything she needs.
viii.
she tries to leave homestay hundreds of times, and she usually succeeds, but it’s never for long. maybe she’ll get an apartment of her own for a month or so, start working some entry-level job for a while, save up some money… and then she returns. she always returns, almost embarrassed.
but the fact of the matter is that the place feels like home, it feels like safety — it’s everything that she thought her dad was when she was little, and maybe that’s why she stays. she’s still looking for him in everything.
her anger fades away in time, and so does her mother’s health.
ix.
she finally visits her mother nearly four years after leaving, and she realizes how much she truly loves her far too late.
she realizes it when the second the door opens, there are too-thin arms wrapped around her, pulling her in to a hug that seems to want to pull every ounce of melancholy right out of her. when she smells the familiar scent of her mother, not floral and pretty, but hard-working. when she finally pulls away and her mother is crying, and her face looks all sunken in.
somin cries right along with her, and all she can say is, “i’m so sorry, mom. i’m so sorry. i should’ve been better to you.” and she cries even harder when she finds out about her deteriorating health, her piling medical bills.
x.
she’s hospitalized not long after somin’s visit, and someone needs to pay off the debt. somin does the only thing that she can think to do. she returns to homestay, just like she has a thousand times before, and she asks for a job.
adulthood and tragedy bring a tired elegance to chae somin. the same one that lives inside of her mom, despite fate’s persistent efforts to evict it forever. there’s still anger lurking beneath the surface, but she’s accepted that not everyone is bad. not everyone is the enemy. in fact, not even most people are the enemy — everyone’s just trying to survive. some literally, some figuratively.
and she doesn’t want to make surviving harder for anyone anymore. it’s hard enough already.

Why do so few people understand the Affordable Care Act?
Fact: You will be required beginning January 1st to pay upwards of $200 per month or more per individual if you do not presently have health insurance. The average estimated cost to you as an individual has been estimated to be $328 per month. This applies to all citizens of the United States. If you do not pay for health insurance, you will be fined $95 for the first year and subsequent years this fine will go up by hundreds of dollars per year. For those of you who think this is some kind of left-wing fact - Read A Newspaper. To me, $200 to $300 or more is a car payment or to put it another way - 2 weeks of groceries. How will you be able to afford this?""

What do Life and Homeowners insurance cover?
I have a tricky question that I really need an answer to. I just got back from the hospital. I was working on my garage this evening and I had a terrible accident. How to get health insurance for a pregnant woman in California that is a LEGAL immigrant?
Ok, my fiancee is pregnant. She's a legal resident, but from what I understand, she isn't supposed to use any type of public benefits (aka welfare) and we really don't want to either. Before you judge me about having another kid without the true financial means, she was on birth control for 2 years. We don't know how this happened, but I guess it's not true 100% protection. David Bowie: “the mens” who thrilled “the worlds”
From glam to neo-soul to his mysterious final album, David Bowie remained one pace onward throughout a prophetic vocation that pushed sex and social boundaries. Alexis Petridis honours a bright enigma
When David Bowies final book, Blackstar, was exhausted on 8 January, a great deal of energy was expended trying to unpick the melodics. As on its precede, 2013 s The Next Day, or any number of classic Bowie albums from Hunky Dory to Station to Station, they were frequently dense and allusive: a great deal of attention concentrates on the claim racetrack, which one of Blackstars backing musicians, saxophonist Donny McCaslin, claimed was about the rise of Isis, a suggestion Bowies spokesperson subsequently denied. Now, with the insight that Bowie was terminally ill during its building, the most striking concept about the book is how elegiac it routinely sounds. If I never see the English evergreens Im guiding to, its good-for-nothing to me, he sang on Dollar Days. Supposing no, but symbolizing yes, this is all I ever symbolized, thats the word that I transmitted, led the closing I Cant Give Everything Away. Most apprehension of all is Lazarus: Seem at me, Im in heaven. Ive went scars that cant see now, Ive get drama cant be stolen; everybody knows me now.
Most parties is of the view that Lazarus was written from the point of view of Thomas Newton, the alien Bowie showed in Nicolas Roegs The Man Who Fell to Earth: it was the deed line of an off-Broadway musical based on the 1976 cinema. Now it feels suspiciously like Bowie writing his own elegy, asserting his own glory, immense aesthetic importance and inimitability for decades, other artists tried to mimic David Bowie, but none of them were really anything like him while wryly pointing out that, after practically 50 years in the spotlight, hed somehow managed to retain a sense of whodunit.
<img class="gu-image" itemprop="contentUrl" alt="Various Mandatory Credit: Photo by Ilpo Musto/ Rex Features( 109350 z) David Bowie and Mick Ronson – David Bowie in concert at Hammersmith Odeon, London, Britain, 1973 Various” src= “https :// i.guim.co.uk/ img/ media/ cda9 78281 eb232da8aff7786d32a3983d51f6cfc/ 525 _1 81 _4 173 _2 429/ original/ 4173. jpg? w= 300& q= 85& auto= format& sharp-worded= 10& s= 0d32d9bcd2a701ec3d08ff75091fe305” />
Something unknowable hidden at the centre David Bowie at Hammersmith Odeon in 1973. Picture: Ilpo Musto/ Rex Features
Dozens of works have been written about him, some of them tremendously illuminating, but something unknowable lurked at the centre. Almost from the start, Bowies career raised questions to which a definite answer seemed elusive. If he was, as he aloud claimed in 1971, lesbian, then what was the is being dealt with the very visible bride and the son hed merely written a stroking little song about? If he was, as he dramatically announced from the stage of the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1973, withdrawing either from music, or from live execution, or from the character of Ziggy Stardust then what was he doing back onstage in London three months later, belting out The Jean Genie in full Ziggy drag? How does anyone in the nation Bowie was, by all reports, in by 1975 ruined by cocaine to the point where he seemed to have genuinely extended crazed; paranoid and fantasizing make an book like Station to Station: not a messily compelling certificate of a mind unravelling, like the solo album of his great idol Syd Barrett, but a occupation of precision and focus and exquisitely limited supremacy thats arguably his best? In a world-wide of cameraphones and social media, how could anyone as famed as Bowie vanish from public view as entirely as he seemed to between 2008 and 2013: moreover, how could anyone as famous as Bowie record a comeback album in the middle of Manhattan without anyone notice or leaking details to the media? How does anyone stage-manage their own extinction as dramatically as Bowie appears to have done: secreting their most acclaimed book in decades, fitted with strange, mysterious hymns whose making unexpectedly pulls into focus when their writer croaks 2 days later?
It was a spectacular end to a profession that began inauspiciously. Bowie wasted the 60 s trying to fit in with prevalent tendencies, something to which he was uniquely ill-suited: he didnt make for a atrociously convincing blues-influenced rocknroller, or hippy troubadour, or MOR singer-songwriter, just as two decades later, he wouldnt make for a abysmally persuading mainstream stadium-rock ace, trapped in what he subsequently called the netherworld of commercial-grade following.
Tellingly, the first truly enormous sung he wrote focused on the outsider: registered at the height of Swinging London, 1966 s The London Boys offered up the periods pessimistic flipside, a monochrome drama of poverty, amphetamine psychosis, grimy bedsits and coffeehouse. Even when he ultimately had a strike, with 1969 s Space Oddity, his success seemed far from ensure. For all the hymns eerie greatnes, the public clearly thought of it as a originality preserve, capitalising on the moon arrives: they declined to buy its follow-up, The Prettiest Star, or the accompanying eponymous book. All along, however, Bowie was picking up ideas he would subsequently pull into focus. His then-manager Ken Pitt established him to the Velvet Underground, whose bia, avant-garde inclinations and transgressive subject matter would resound throughout Bowies career: you are able to discover echoes of their tumultuous resound in everything from the feedback-laden glam boulder of 1973 s Aladdin Sane to the wilfully synthetic racket he created up on 1977 s Heroes to the sonic hubbub of Blackstars Tis a Pity She Was a Whore. He tried to incorporate what hed learned studying pantomime under Lindsay Kemp into his stage behave, which knocked off a fruitful infatuation with describing plans from other areas of the arts movies, theater, literature, fad into rock music.
As the 70 s dawned, he found the perfect musical foil in guitarist Mick Ronson and his songwriting went better and better 1971 s Hunky Dory was as rich and brilliant a accumulation of chants as he ever wrote but almost no one noticed. The closest Hunky Dory came to commercial success was when Oh! You Pretty Events built No 12, kindnes of a jaunty, prim cover version by Peter Noone toothsome former frontman of the 60 s least-threatening wizards, Hermans Hermits which was clearly some distance from the seismic rupture Bowie had predicted on the books opening racetrack Changes: Ogle out, you rocknrollers!
How he made them discover was via one of “the worlds largest” bold plays in stone record. Infatuated with the Velvet Undergrounds world of lag queens and sneering, spiteful putdowns, Bowie seemed to realise that, for all the generation-gap-rendering sickens that British rock music had given over the predating decade, it had never truly dared touch on the subject of homosexuality. Beyond the thanks-but-no-thanks story of the Kinks Lola, there were only gazing comments, so oblique as to be the stuff of rumour rather than knowledge: Examine Your best friend, likewise by the Kinks, the Beatles Youve Got to Conceal Your Love Away, Donovans To Try for the Sun. Tellingly, the journalist to whom he came out as bisexual, Michael Watts, didnt seem to have been atrociously persuaded: Mmmmmm, he answered doubtfully, despite the fact that Bowie had already posed on the extend of 1970 s The Boy Who Sold the World wearing a men dress, and larded the melodics of The Width of a Circle and Queen Bitch with intimations of homosexual meetings.
It didnt matter. The interview depicted enough attention that the launching of his next album and its associate persona, Ziggy Stardust the latter debuted a fortnight eventually in the unpromising environs of the Toby Jug pub in Tolworth felt like an affair. The force was electrified farther by his appearance on Top of the Pops in July 1972, arguably “the worlds largest” celebrated three minutes of music video ever broadcast in the UK. Listen to a bootleg of Bowie performing live in Aylesbury the preceding year and he clangs nervous and uncertain; on Top of the Pops, he seemed imperious. Theres a contact of Lord Kitchener about the moment Bowie placed down the camera as he sang the line: I had to phone person so I picked on you. He looks like a person banking an horde of teenage misfits. No substance how strange and alien you experienced, you couldnt be as weird and alien as Bowie and his bandmates appeared: Youre not alone, gives people your hands, youre remarkable, he sang on the accompanying album.
It facilitated that Ziggy Stardust was the right evidence for the moment. The standard pipeline is that glam stone represented a diversion from the sadnes of early-7 0s life, a glittery space-age dreamworld in which you could conceal from rising unemployment, industrial unrest and terrorism. But The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is riven with dread and repugnance, involved in what the columnist Francis Wheen afterward called the collective nervous breakdown of the 1970 s. Even at its most escapist, it underlined what you might be fleeing from: Joanie went to fight in Belfast, Judy stayed at home to deprive, opened the rocknroll fantasy of Star. As hour wore on and Bowie became an ever-more influential and dominant person capable of reactivating others careers at a blow his music get more dense and apocalyptic. By the time of 1974 s Diamond Dogs, it resounded so decadent and diseased and shocking that it was hard to work out where Bowie could possibly go next.
As it turned out, he was just getting started on a series of musical displacements so brilliantly executed they seemed to draw the rest of pop music along in their aftermath. If his early 70 s albums notified punk a genre heavily staffed by boys whod been galvanised by his 1972 Pinnacle of the Pops appearance then the plastic feeling and electronic experimentations of his late 70 s albums foretold a vast sum of what happened after punk. Fairly aside from his willingness to reinvent himself so dramatically, it seems a miracle his fans kept up it might as well have been a completely different creator, said one devotee who evidenced both the glammy, theatrical early years and the funk-inspired subsequently demoes of the 1974 tour that finally built him a star in America.
What was striking was how thoroughly Bowie could impose himself on different genres, how he had been able to take other peoples ideas and twist them until they seemed entirely his own. 1975 s Young Americans was entered at Sigma Sound, home of the yummy string-laden mind liberated on Philadelphia International, but it didnt sound like a Philly soul record. Preserved with Brian Eno, 1977 s Low and Heroes were obviously in thrall to the music of German experimentalists Kraftwerk and Neu !, but they didnt sound much like Kraftwerk or Neu !. They reverberated like David Bowie, even when they seemed nothing like David Bowie had entered before.
There was a lovely circularity about the liberation of 1980 s Scary Monsters( and Super Creeps) and its accompanying No 1 single, Ashes to Ashes, at the height of the New Romantic movement hed almost singlehandedly inspired: public confirmation that Bowie was the most important and influential artist since the Beatles. But the 80 s were to prove a more problematic decade than that suggested. His vocation in the 70 s had been scarred by bad business deals: formerly he was out of a contract with Tony DeFries that entitled his former manager to 16% of his earnings until 1982, Bowie seemed determined to make money. He succeeded 1983 s Serious Moonlight tour sold 2.6 m tickets but, as he subsequently admitted, his artistry sustained. Tells Dance released in 1983, and his biggest collision book with 7m sales had its moments. The subsequent fiscal year Tonight, nonetheless, did not.

The most important an influential master since the Beatles Bowie on stagecoach in Paris, 1987. Picture: Catherine Cabrol/ Kipa/ Corbis
By the activities of the decade resolve, Bowie seemed aware that something used to go amis. He tried to kickstart his muse: by wording a heavy rock-and-roll strip, Tin Machine; by announcing that he would no longer play old cloth in concert; by reconnecting with collaborators whod stimulation him on in the past, including Brian Eno and Mick Ronson; by dipping in the voguish dance genre of drumnbass. He rarely reached brilliant registers not least 1995 s impassable but reinforcing Outside but nothing accorded what hed achieved in the 70 s. Surely, by the mid-9 0s, his real innovations seemed to be happening away from the recording studio: he secreted a download-only single in 1996, nine years before iTunes. He cleared himself available to followers on the messageboard of his website, signalling the 360 -degree connectivity that artists are about to indulge in in the age of Twitter and Facebook, and which he himself shunned absolutely during the years before his death.
By the early noughties, he seemed to be settling into the life of a heritage rock ace: construct well-received albums that knowingly referenced his past, playing classic books in their entirety, seeming to tacitly declare both the scope of his influence and that his greatest achievements were behind him. Its a pragmatic approaching thats served everyone from Paul McCartney to Iggy Pop well, but it sat uneasily with Bowie. His music “ve never” wallowed in nostalgia. It had been iconoclastic and antagonistic towards the past( my brothers at home with his Beatles and his Stones what a draw, hed written on 1972 s All the Young Dudes ): it was about the present, or better still, the future. It was triggered by disaster surgery on a blocked artery, but his retirement into semi-retirement after 2003 s Reality made a strange various kinds of feel.
Most sees presumed it was permanent. Instead, he unexpectedly reappeared in 2013 with Where Are We Now ?. The song only appeared on the internet on his 66 th birthday, without advance advertisement or fanfare, its writer waning to give interviews: in its own practice, as brash a move as the interview he threw the Melody Maker in 1972. The precede album, The Next Day, wasnt thousands and thousands of miles removed from the books hed been attaining before his sabbatical solid songwriting, lots of remarks to Bowies past, but its follow-up was something else exclusively. On freeing, Blackstar reverberated singularly like the type of confident, decide break with his past Bowie remained diverting out at the high levels of his superpowers: the thrillingly exploratory jazz-influenced tone had as little to do with the music on The Next Day as the being of Young Americans had with the glam books that predated it. It clanged like a new beginning. As it turned out, “its been” the exact opposite: it was a departing, a mystify, filled with clues no one picked up on, that would suddenly be solved by his death. David Bowie used to go the way he spent most of his vocation: unknowable, one gradation ahead of everyone else.
Alexis Petridiss picking of Bowie
Theres no part in an attempt to make a definitive 20 song Bowie playlist. Theres over half a century of wildly diverse work there: it isnt going to be neatly summed up in 20 ballads without glaring omissions, whole the sectors of what he did left untouched. So this is an unashamedly personal collection, in chronological order.

Saga’s 15 Greatest Hits (So Far)
WARNING: The following list contains several spoilers for “Saga.” Read at your own discretion.
“Saga,” created by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, has been one of the most consistently well-received comics series since it was first released in 2012. Some even credit it as being a major turning point in helping to usher in a new wave of comic book readers across the globe.
RELATED: 15 Most Insane Moments From Invincible
The story follows Alana, Marko and their daughter Hazel as they flee their respective races who are locked in a never-ending war with each other. But “Saga” is much more than a story of forbidden love story, as it regularly touches on the concepts of family, struggle and loss. Throughout its run, “Saga” has dealt out far more than its share of emotionally charged moments that have either hit us deep in our hearts, excited ur, or both. Here are 15 of the most impactful scenes that probably left you sitting in a pool of your own tears – either of sadness or joy.
THE WILL MEETS SOPHIE
The Will is a mercenary charged with hunting down Alana, Marko and Hazel. He’s been around since the very first issue of the series and has been involved with a lot of its best characters. Even though he’s a bounty hunter, he’s not completely heartless. As a matter of fact, he’s shown a glimmer of humanity on a number of occasions. The most respectable of which came when he made a pit stop on a planet called Sextillion, which is basically the Las Vegas of space, only three times as gritty.
After being guided to the darkest of Sextillion’s shady corners, he was introduced to a “slave girl.” The Will was shocked and appalled to find a young girl no older than seven waiting for him. The child before him had been sold into the sex trade by her uncle and had been forced to endure an unspoken level of cruelty. Naturally, The Will did what anyone with a heart and a retractable lance would do: he saved her and taught a painful lesson to the scumbags who were holding her captive.
LYING CAT COMFORTS SOPHIE
Given the life she was forced to endure at such a young age, Sophie understandably came out with some insecurities and issues with her identity. For quite a while, she still had the bad habits of looking to please everyone around her and constantly referred to herself as a slave girl. The Will and Gwendolyn did their best by giving her a new name and constantly reminding her that she was free, valued and worthy of being loved, but the most comforting words came from Lying Cat, a creature who has a natural talent for pointing out when people aren’t telling the truth.
Perhaps one of the most heartwarming scenes of the entire series came as Sophie sat next to Lying Cat, going over her newfound identity. After slipping into a moment of self-loathing, she called herself “dirty on the inside” for doing “bad things” in reference to her past. To most people, it’s clear that nothing that happened to Sophie was her own fault, which made it hurt to know she felt that way. Luckily, Lying Cat was lying next to her and said the only word she knows how to speak, washing away all of Sophie’s doubts in an instant.
“LYING.”
ALANA GETS ADDICTED TO FADEAWAY/THE BREAKUP
When their relationship works, Alana and Marko are one of the best couples you’ll find in any medium. They fell in love despite coming from opposite sides of two warring planets and always seem to find their way back to each other no matter how far they stray. However, their ugly moments tend to get really ugly.
For example, when Alana was working as an actor and hated herself for it, she was introduced to a drug called Fadeaway. Not only did it make her better at her job, but it also made her enjoy doing it. The problems came when she got addicted to the drug and was even high in front of her family. This all came to a huge confrontation around the same time that Marko was warming up to Hazel’s dance teacher and it looked like he was actually going to make a huge mistake. Fortunately, he didn’t, but that didn’t help much when he got into a fight with Alana and threw a bag of groceries at her, reminding her of the abusive household she was raised in.
MARKO OVERDOSES ON FADEAWAY
Fadeaway played an active role in breaking up a family that readers had come to love and feel like they were a part of. Alana was able to break her drug habit, but that just made it hurt even more when Marko went into a tailspin and overdosed on a bad batch of it himself (in an attempt to better understand his estranged wife by trying the same drug she had). It wasn’t easy to watch him be driven so close to the edge of his mental and emotional breaking point that he would lean on the very same drug that tore his family apart.
The trip that Marko then had into his deepest memories was both revealing and pushed the knife even deeper into readers’ guts. At a young age, he lashed out and hit a girl who was picking on defenseless animals, which went against everything he was taught. After his father found out, he whipped him with tears in both of their eyes.
It’s worth noting that this entire flashback wasn’t even in English, but the emotion of it still translated perfectly, which is a testament to Fiona Staples’ art.
THE TALE OF D. OSWALT HEIST
Without D. Oswald Heist, there would be no “Saga.” Well, not exactly. Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples surely would’ve figured something out. For the sake of continuity, however, Alana and Marko never would’ve fallen in love if it weren’t for Heist’s novel.
When readers first meet the veteran author, he’s having a seemingly pleasant conversation with Prince Robot IV about their differing ideologies on war and the effects of it. But as the conversation goes on, it delves deeper into the two men’s past experiences, even leading to the revelation that Heist’s son was a war veteran who returned home and hung himself in the bathroom.
Despite Heist being a pacifist, he ends up fighting with Robot IV to protect Marko’s mother, Klara. Later on, he prepares to fight for his house guests again, but Gwendolyn busts through the door and stabs him through the head with The Will’s lance.
YUMA’S SACRIFICE
It’s hard to say whether Yuma, the ex-wife of D. Oswald Heist, did more good or bad for Alana, Marko and Hazel. On the one hand, she helped Alana get and keep her job on the Open Circuit while they were in hiding. On the other hand, she sold them out, got Alana hooked on drugs and gave Marko a batch of bad drugs that almost killed him. Alright, maybe she did a lot more bad. She made up for it in the end, though!
The main mode of transportation for the “Saga” characters is a sentient living tree that doubles as a spaceship. However, the years haven’t been kind to it, so during a certain battle, the ship suffers a fuel leak. Yuma and Ghus (a beloved talking seal) head down to check it out. Ghus discovers that the leak is inside of the fuel chamber and anyone who steps inside to repair it will die. After a big speech from the little seal, Ghus volunteers to go. However, Yuma knocks him out with a fire extinguisher, fixes it herself and is burned alive while high on Fadeaway. What a way to go.
IZABEL’S ORIGIN STORY
One of the regular companions in “Saga” is a Horror – a.k.a. a pink ghost with half of her intestines hanging out of her T-shirt – named Izabel. For the most part, Izabel is a source of comic relief during otherwise tense moments thanks to her teenage sense of rebellion and ingenuity. She’s also Hazel’s permanent nanny, and not only because she’s literally attached to the child’s soul.
Because of her usually chipper demeanor, it was especially sobering to see her put Alana in her place when the latter lashed out at her immediately after having her big fight with Marko. Izabel did so by reminding Alana that she wasn’t always a ghost. When she was still living and walking on two legs, she had a life of her own and a girlfriend she loved dearly. Then, one day, she walked across a land mine and died instantly before getting to tell her lover how she truly felt. Therefore, she knows as much about loss as anyone else in the series.
IZABEL DYING (AGAIN)
Throughout her entire appearance while traveling with the “Saga” family, Izabel’s been one of the most consistently loyal people they’ve met in their journey. This can be tough, since the family almost always seem to be expanding, including taking in people who sometimes ended up being their enemies at some point (like Prince Robot IV). From their very first encounter, Izabel was doing what she could to protect them from harm, whether it be using her ghostly powers to scare someone off or just being there for Marko or Alana to bounce their ideas and frustrations off of.
Well, readers were in for a big surprise when Izabel was killed by the latest bounty hunters to hone in on the family’s trail. Given her incredibly likeable character and fierce sense of loyalty, it’s only fitting that the reason she’d get taken out was because she didn’t want to sell them out to a couple of Freelancers. If one thing’s been made clear in “Saga,” it’s that no one is safe from death. Not even ghosts.
BARR’S FINAL GIFT
Many families aren’t just made up of parents and their kids. In a lot of cases, an immediate family can expand to include aunts and uncles or grandparents. The latter was the case for Hazel’s family as Marko’s mother and father magically showed up one day. They literally popped out of a portal and started attacking Alana, being under the impression that she had killed Marko. Fortunately, it was a false alarm (as explained by the frantic Marko in mid-combat), so Barr and Karla’s sense of urgency allowed them to meet their granddaughter before it was too late.
It was soon revealed that Barr was terminally ill and only had a handful of months left to live. Unfortunately, those few months quickly became a few minutes, because Barr had to use the last of his energy on a spell meant to save the rocket tree ship from being destroyed. Alana, who he had just warmed up to, was the only one there as Barr faded away before Marko and Karla walked in.
Barr’s commitment to saving his family, even though they’d just met, is further proof of how caring he was.
HAZEL REVEALING HER WINGS
Given that her entire existence could potentially end a war that’s spanned decades, she’s always had to deal with bigger issues than most people would at her age. This including constantly having to hide her true identity from everyone she met and always being on the run. She even found herself separated from her parents for over a year and kept in a detention center. That’s a lot of pressure for a kid. Eventually, she broke.
One day, she got her teacher at the detention center alone and revealed her beautiful wings in all their splendor. This was something Hazel had wanted to do her entire life but had always been instructed not to. The weight of the world was lifted off of her tiny shoulders in that one instant. Seeing those wings fully expanded in the image above was cathartic for both Hazel and the reader. At least, until her teacher fainted and bashed her head open on a coffee table.
SIR ROBOT CRACKS
Prince Robot IV could’ve easily been a throwaway character. There are probably dozens of people trying to track down Alana, Marko and Hazel for a bunch of different reasons and he was just one of them. However, his story developed into something much deeper as he made it his personal mission to rescue the newborn son he had yet to meet (he was offworld on the chase when his boy was born) from the child’s kidnapper.
In order to do so, Robot formed an unlikely alliance with Marko, one of the very people he was assigned to capture. Word eventually got back to the Robot Kingdom and he was stripped of his royal status, and changed his name to Sir Robot. This dramatic fall from grace combined with years of war experience and the tragic loss of his wife would be a lot for anyone to handle. The last we saw of Sir Robot, he was high out of his mind, being incredibly forceful with Alana (despite desperately trying not to let his screen reveal his fetishistic thoughts of her) and holding his own blaster cannon up to his head.
MARKO FINALLY FACES GWENDOLYN
A lot of the time you don’t see heartbreak coming and even when you do, it still feels like you got hit by a brick wall. Some people take that pain and turn it into something positive. Some people use it as motivation to venture across the galaxy to hunt down the person responsible for ripping their heart out. Gwendolyn, Marko’s ex fiancée, would be the latter.
Back on Wreath, Marko and Gwendolyn were happily engaged when he was sent off to fight in the war while she got stuck at home. They stayed in contact for a while as Marko started to lose his motivation for battle, later eventually falling in love with Alana after he was captured. Once she caught wind that another woman was not only with her fiancé, but married him with the ring meant for her, she did whatever it took to find them.
When she confronted Marko at D. Oswald Heist’s lighthouse, he could only hang his head, apologize and tell her that he couldn’t do anything to help her save the life of man she now loved (The Will). It was an interesting mix of sad and anticlimactic, since at this point, we’d seen both characters move on while the chase was taking place.
SOPHIE STABS THE WILL
After crash landing on a random planet, Sophie, The Will and Gwendolyn decided to eat some berries they found. Little did they know, the berries were hallucinogenic and kicked in really quickly. The Will saw his dead ex-girlfriend who told him to act on his impulses. Sophie, on the other hand, saw a vision of her mother, who told her to grab a knife and stab The Will. When The Will realized what was happening, it was already too late as Sophie was standing behind him with a knife inches from his throat. As he blacked out from the blood loss, he made sure to tell her that none of what happened was her fault.
In her short life, Sophie has already known far more struggle and unfairness than anyone ever should, which is why her being saved by The Will and Gwendolyn was such a precious moment. These total strangers became the people who consistently cared about her the most in her entire life. The scene is heartbreaking because you know how much The Will means to her and how she’s going to feel about her actions once she’s sobered up.
REALIZING HAZEL MISSED OUT ON HER CHILDHOOD
Growing up in a land of war can easily rob children of their innocence. Hazel was definitely no exception to this. As mentioned earlier, she even spent some time in a prison/internment camp.
Instead of not believing in Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy, Hazel’s youthful skepticism went much deeper as she was already wondering about death and the afterlife at a very young age. After Izabel died, Hazel could feel the void it left inside of her. While everyone around her attempted to console her and let her know things would be alright, she just knew they wouldn’t. She took some time to process it all, part of which included her talking with a friend named Kurti about where people go when they die. Keep in mind, Kurti’s around the same age as her and his life is basically just as chaotic. Somehow, he took the pessimism of a broken-hearted little girl and said just the right thing to give her a little hope again.
Then they kissed. It was adorable, in spite of the depressing moments that led up to it.
THE STALK DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY
Again, even bounty hunters have hearts. It actually makes a lot of sense for them to fall in love with each other, because they understand the lifestyle better than anyone else. This made it refreshing to see The Will, who was mostly the cold, brooding type up to that point, have a soft spot for The Stalk, an eight-legged spider woman.
While on Sextillion, The Will called the woman he loved to ask her for advice. Sadly, he ended up hearing her last moments as she was shot dead in an unnecessary conflict with the Robot Kingdom. He never really got over this and would go on to dream of and see visions of The Stalk for years, even getting himself fired as a Freelancer.
While these moment showed The Will’s softer side, they also revealed just how dark and bloodthirsty he could become. When a soldier from the Robot Kingdom picked up the phone to let him know The Stalk was dead, he went full “Taken” with the threats, and understandably so.
