page length: never. ive read les mis. im currently reading a 600 page history of the AIDS epidemic. One of my favourite books is 900 pages long. honestly im fascinated by the art of long fiction. Like yeah how long can you make this, how many characters can you put into this, how far can you take them?

Unrelated to page length, I think every story has its own timescale. Some stories, i.e game of thrones, have a huuuuuge timescale. some have a huge cast of characters. and that time we spend with them is well deserved. But there does come a point where writers will try to extend/shorten a timescale and it throws off pacing. To me, a ballad of songbirds and snakes the second half was not given the timescale it deserved. And in stretching things out. the writer of the walking dead Robert Kirkman initially talked about the walking dead being a project he'd have to pass on, he envisioned it being that long. and then in his own closing remarks when the series ends at volume 32 is the story was telling him it was over, that it was done, and even though he'd had this long running vision, he had to respect the story's own natural timescale in the end.

the answer of what books length did i hate is i resented the goldfinch for being so long when it feels like at least 30% of it is the same scene of theo and boris huffing glue in their empty las vegas houses, but thats my personal opinion lol

Alright all. Someone posted something a while ago about putting more niche jobs in fanfics. I'm still working on it, but I wanna see if there's any interest. I've seen so many teacher Steve fics, but mostly for middle or high school. So, picture this:

My new favorite headcanon that I don’t really believe is that Jughead is the one character in the Archie comics universe who’s aware that they’ve all existed in the exact same state since (at least) the 40s while time passes around them. And he’s so chill all the time because at this point he’s basically in the second act of a time loop story—he’s stopped trying to convince people or break the loop, and he’s stopped worrying about any and all consequences.

Jughead’s already so weird that nobody thinks twice when he tells them things about their time loop-ish situation, or acts oddly nonchalant about things that should warrant concern. They assume he’s just making dumb jokes or being lazy.

Jug doesn’t really mind the loop. There are worse ways to spend eternity than being a cool teen doing fun stuff with your friends forever. Getting to experience every new decade and its technological advancements without the drawback of aging. It’s a pretty sweet deal. But occasionally it is a little worrying that nobody else is ever able to understand the nature of their universe.

Overall though, Jug’s pretty fine with how things are. He doesn’t waste time worrying about the loop and it’s existential issues, he just keeps on living like always. Life is good. Why try to change it? He’s just going to do whatever makes him happy moment to moment. He’s going to hang out with his friends, and eat good food, and be as weird as he can possibly be. Forever. :)

So when Vol 9 was airing, I saved this above gif of Weiss looking at the Rusted Knight. It's short and quick, but I always thought it was an interesting pose they did for her. Like, look at how the rest of her team looks:

Ruby and Yang are surprised with Yang looking a bit more surprised. Blake is beside herself to be meeting another character, which given she's a book lover and had more or less been taking the lead throughout their Ever After journey, it would be more understandable for her to geek out over meeting him. Her stance almost mirrors Weiss' stance but not nearly as much. Her hands are closer to her waist compared to Weiss', which are raised up near her breast.

So what am I implying from this? The Rusted Knight was Weiss' fictional crush growing up.

Think about it. When Weiss was listing off two other characters back in Episode 4 “A Cat Most Curious," she named Lively Carpenter and the Rusted Knight. She described the Carpenter as "sweet" and Rusted Knight as "handsome." Now, one could make the argument that she only referred to each as "one" but I'm going based on the order she had listed them. So let's think about it. She described the Carpenter with a personality trait but described the Knight by a physical attribute. Now, we can assume The Girl Who Fell Through the World is like its real-world counterparts, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and that it has illustrations. Yet I don't think the Jaune was ever illustrated since, while the girls might not have recognized him prior to meeting him, they might have years later since they IMMEDIATELY recognized him upon meeting in the Ever After. Oh the Rusted Knight most certainly would have been drawn, just not Jaune. So Weiss describing him as handsome is something she had to take the word of from the author and believed. I wonder if she ever imagined what he looked like under the armor? Did she have her own vision of him?

You know, we learned back in Volume 2's “Extracurricular” that Weiss has been pursued by suitors because of her last name, similar to her father marrying her mother. I no doubt believe that's why Weiss is picky about dating, and why she was so disinterested in Jaune's attempts. She saw how her father treated her mother, and vehemently does NOT want that for her life. I think, though, she may also be slightly swayed by her crush on the Rusted Knight. He was described as handsome by Lewis and didn't seem to be painted in a bad light. Maybe his depiction of a good, honest man influenced her taste. It's all just head canons, but an interview with Weiss' VA Kara a major White Knight supporter said that Weiss' type is someone who is mature and stepping up for other people. Is it possible some of this came from the Rusted Knight? He was much older than Alyx and Lewis, and since he hailed from Remnant, he wasn't zany like the Ever Afterans, making him mature. Also, he was helpful and was almost like a guide for the group up until Alyx poisoned him. That could be seen as him stepping up, especially since many of the Ever Afterans, while not evil, may not have been as helpful as him or the Cat who was just using the two humans to get out of the Ever After.

I'm going to stop there because I didn't mean for this to get out of hand. I was intending to just post this gif and do a quick little "hehe, look who has a crush" and somehow that spiraled out of control.

Anyway, Vol 9 has been over for a while, Weiss and Jaune have grown emotionally and in their relationship, and I'm curious to see what will come now that RWBY's moving to Viz Media.

This is why I like and defend My Hero Academia's Ending

We're in a new Iron Age. We have been for years now, maybe longer. Really, the idea of Marvel Zombies should've been enough to make us realize it. For whatever reason, comic books are always feeling like they need to constantly be one-upping how evil each new villain is, and it's just so damn depressing. This whole video is about Reed Richards turning into a villain who commits multiple genocides and tortures alternate versions of himself for potentially infinite amounts of time just out of ego. And if you think this is a problem limited to Marvel then I have three words for you: Dark Nights Metal. Aka "how can we make Bruce Wayne into a monster worse than the Joker seven different times?" Yeah, I'll admit that The Batman Who Laughs had a sick-ass design, but dear God, if I wanted that much grimdark hopelessness I'd be reading a Warhammer novel, not a friggin' Batman comic. Y'know, Batman, the guy who saw his parents die in front of him and devoted his entire life to making sure as many people as possible didn't have to suffer the same fate? The guy who took in a child he had no connection to and raised him as his own son solely because said child suffered that same fate and he(Batman) didn't want him to have to go through life without a family like he did? The guy who managed to, through endless heroics, gain a new family filled with people who he saved and who all truly love him? Where's that been? And what about his best friend, the guy who literally has a character that translates to "hope" on his chest? Sure ain't been much of that in superhero comics lately, has there?

This is the state of superhero comics. Infinity this, Crisis that, and it's always the end of the world but only in the grimdarkest of ways. HeroAca had an arc like that once. Where Japan was collapsing into anarchy, with hundreds, probably thousands of villains freed from prison and sent deliberately to roam the streets and harm as many people as possible, and the protag was forcing himself to fight them alone, running himself ragged and isolating himself from his friends "to protect them". And it ended with those friends hunting him down, chasing him, and manhandling him into a position where he was physically incapable of running away in order to inform him that no, actually, he will not be doing this alone. Why? Because they are here. And they always will be, no matter what, because that's what it means to be both a friend and a hero. HeroAca never, at any point, stopped having a message of hope. The ending of HeroAca is a final statement of that hope-the death knell to the initial problem of a quirkless society that certain people just can't ever become heroes. Sure, the tech was so expensive that, without the "end of the world" budget for All Might's suit it took them eight years to save up to get it made, but in a world of super science that'll change a whole lot faster than in our world. And heck, even in our world things like cars and tv's(they first popped up in the 30s) went from toys for the rich to staples of everyday life pretty darn quick. The ending of HeroAca isn't just that now Deku can become a hero, it's that now anyone can become a hero. The next Batman, Iron Man, Blue Beetle, Mister Terrific-there are endless possibilities, and in a society now transformed with a better understanding of heroics, the Syndrome problem normally stemming from everyone being super won't even show up. That's the kind of soul comics used to have, the kind they ought to have. Stories of endless darkness and torment aren't the kind of story that people like Jack Kirby, Stan Lee or Siegel and Schuster would have wanted to tell. They wanted to inspire people, to give them hope. And that's what HeroAca did, right up till the end.

Genuine question and no judgement. How do you feel about she/they transfem f1sh? I wouldn’t say they’re my non-binary awakening but my ideal transition goals for a while has been a fag ass dedf1sh (to the point an irl who I became tumblr mutuals called me out on how similar i am to deepest of metros dedf1sh [which I had very much been doing on purpose]) and I feel like there’s a lot of interesting ideas around depersonalization and loss of a sense of self that you can do in a unique and very interesting way with a transfem version of the character. But then again octarian culture does not have the same norms and social pressures as ours.

Do you also get uncomfortable with any pronouns f1shes when she is used for them? I’m very interested in your connection and idea of the character, you’re very cool and I love seeing all your dedf1sh postings.

Heyo! I know I said I don't personally like she/her dedf1sh but I wouldn't say I'm uncomfortable with it. I think my issue stems more from the newer fans erasing their transness all together (usually the cishet guys but I've seen some others too </3). A good chunk of the time when I see people use she/her for them, it's people being like "that is a CISGENDER WOMAN!!!!!" and not usually in a trans way. There's nothing wrong with f1sh being a she/they transfem, in fact I'm always open to new headcanons, same goes for all pronouns. Even if my f1sh is very masc, they still give me transfem vibes if that makes sense.

When it comes to being specific about f1sh pronouns, it's usually for canon f1sh or my own personal f1sh. In reality I can't stop anyone else from making their own personal hcs for them and what pronouns they use. If someone wants them to be she/they or any pronouns, there's really not much I can do about it besides move on. And if I'm talking to someone about a f1sh with any pronouns besides they, I'll use the pronouns they headcanon f1sh to have.

WIP of my The Warm Hands of Ghost fic

(This might be all of it on account of I lost the ability to write again so posting just in case- Spoilers, happens years after the book, proceed under the cut :))

Despite the things Penelope Shaw had done, the choices she'd made, Laura still named her first born daughter after her, six years after she had lost Pim. Her son, who came four years later, she'd named after her brother. 

It was them, 15 year old Pim Jones and 11 year old Freddie Jones, that Laura thought of when the news of the war broke. 

Or, more specifically, the word of Canada joining the war. 

Freddie, thankfully, was way too young to join the effort. He still had a boyish face, his voice hadn't dropped, even if he tried to enlist they'd never let him.  

Pim was closer to the right age, but still she was off. And in the last war nurses had to be at least 21, not the 18 of men, and had to be formally trained as a nurse. 

Laura herself was free of the war too, when nurses couldn't be older than 39, and she was past that.

The only one left to worry over was her husband. Stephen. She thought there might be a chance he'd stay, now that he'd built so much at home. 

He was the one who'd wanted children- the one who suggested they start trying. He prayed for a son throughout the entire pregnancy, and when Pim was born she became his entire world, even when she wasn't the son he'd wanted. 

And then he got a son, one Laura took charge on naming, just as she had with Pim. She'd told him that he could name the next one, but the next one never came, and Stephen told her that two was all he'd ever need. That his family was perfect, that nothing mattered more. 

He'd proved that just she was enough, when he showed up on her doorstep immediately after the war had ended. When he’d stayed, long after. Making the large move from America to Halifax for her, because he knew that even if he’d already moved to a different part of the province she’d never leave her brother. 

She wondered what her brother and Winter thought of the news, but it fell second in her mind to the wonder of what her husband thought. 

And the wonder of if her husband still thought he had a duty to do even after so much service already, and after so much left to do at home.
