Young Hero Sent On A Quest meets other young heroes also sent on various quests—only to discover they're all being used as free child labor by the same flaky wizard as a scam to collect magical artifacts.
the Young Heroes' collective new "Quest" is now to Unionize.....
#actually this is funnier if there are multiple wizards involved but the 12-year-olds combine their knowledge#and realize the wizards are operating as a unified corporate entity#so then of course they have to go on a Quest To Meet The Monarch#to ask the Crown to rule on this previously undeclared power bloc#which in a feudal fantasy world causes all sorts of political intrigue! none of it good#so we've got corporate executive wizards facing off against royal anti-monopoly legal teams#meanwhile the aforementioned 12-year-olds are standing by pissed off and chewing popcorn#(and hoarding undeclared magical artifacts they may or may not collectively vote to use as ammunition to fuel a revolutionary uprising)#the!! possibilities!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like to imagine Dante's able to use some basic magic beyond just typical demonic stuff. In the opening of DMC1, a magic circle appears below Trish when Dante shoots the motorcycle back at her, so I like to think Dante knows some basic spells, wards, and the like. For the most part he uses it for little things like making a special lock for his Devil Arm vault, maybe heating up soup or a drink that's gone cold, and so on, rather than any combat things. Dante's spells are not at all refined and he doesn't have a natural talent for it, per se, but he has a lot of power he can put into things so he often ends up brute forcing whatever it is. It's not necessarily efficient, but it works, and that's all he cares about. He's not really interested in most precise or specific things.
Vergil on the other hand has a lot more control and a much greater interest in magic in general. A post DMC5 Vergil (and pre DMC3) would use magic a lot more often, and without as much prep. He spent a lot of time learning different charms etc. to use in daily life, and he's a lot more elegant about it. Some he learned when on the run and trying to hide from demons, while others he learned when trying to track down Sparda, and others still he learned for purely convenience reasons. Post DMC5 he gets a lot more into it than he did pre DMC3 when it was more a thing of survival, even if it had the convenience aspect back then too. He's the kind of person who would learn spells for the sake of knowing them, and while he prefers using demonic abilities in combat, he might try to learn a magical combat spell or two just to see what it's like. He mostly sticks to practical things though (which sit on the border of practicality, but he considers them practical, uses them often, and makes Dante's magic look like child's play).
On the magical third (regrown!) hand, Nero's absolutely horrible at magic, to the point of not being able to do basically anything. He's got the magical reserves, but unlike Vergil who can cast precise spells with relatively little effort, or Dante who gets through spells by basically overloading them until they work, Nero just can't get magic to work for him at all. Lessons with Vergil end with him stomping out when he gets fed up with Vergil commenting on how easy it should be, while attempts to get Dante to explain how he casts magic end in frustration when Dante's explanations basically start and end at "I dunno, it, it just works." Sure Nero can memorize and draw a warding sigil perfectly, but any and all attempts to get it to actually do anything end in failure.
Kyrie, in a reveal that surprises everyone, most of all herself, is apparently extremely talented at magic, which she does not know until she sees Nero trying and failing to activate a warding sigil Vergil taught him, puts a finger on it so she can trace over it as she reviews Nero's work in case he messed something up, and inadvertently activates it. After that they end up doing some testing and discover Kyrie is a natural when it comes to magic. The only problem is that while casting spells, activating sigils, and the like come easily to her, her magical reserves are rather small, limiting what she's able to do. When she first activates the sigil Nero had drawn, she ends up unable to get up and Nero has to carry her to bed (which she insists he doesn't have to do, because she just needs a minute to catch her breath, but he insists on)
Nico is stoked to hear about this and ends up figuring out a way to essentially fit Kyrie and Nero with a magic converter that allows Kyrie to draw on the magical reserves Nero can't utilize so that she can use them for whatever she wants to. While Kyrie isn't someone who really cares to use magic for things in her daily life like Dante and Vergil, she does use it to make little charms for the kids, and to establish wards around the house to protect them from demon attacks and other small misfortunes. She and Vergil end up bonding a little bit as he teaches her the spells and other bits of magic Nero was never able to pick up on.
(Vergil himself feels a mixture of pride at how quickly she picks up on things with his instruction, and jealousy when he sees how good she is at things first or second try when he knows it took him a good five or ten attempts to get it down when he was first learning. Kyrie notices and tells him that he's still much better than her in the long run since he's able to use magic without needing a separate "battery" to power him, but Nero absolutely digs into Vergil about it when Kyrie isn't there. Dante meanwhile finds it all hilarious. But he and Nero are pretty proud of Kyrie too.)
#erurandomness#dmc#eru hcs#i love mundane magic#i do like hc'ing eva as having known some magic#i don't usually hc her as an umbra witch herself but i will flop between hc'ing her with umbra witch ancestors-#-or eva just being a witch herself. she also knew some basic spells and did try to fight the demons when they came#i think in this hc verse eva would've used little bits of magic around the boys#and that's part of what motivates vergil to try to learn magic beyond just what his demonic power allows him to do#while they can channel their demonic power into using magic as a fuel source magical aptitude is separate from demonic heritage#the magical aptitude they got from eva. unfortunately nero did not inherit it#some of the people of fortuna were witches way back when though. and kyrie DID inherit the gene for magical aptitude!#a few of them. she's got more natural talent than dante and vergil combined. she's just not interested in fighting#and like i said above she doesn't really have the fuel source for it. hence nico making the converter for Nero#mages also have their own magic fuel source that dante vergil and nero can draw from#it's essentially the primary tank. with demonic power being a backup that can be converted to fill that tank when it empties#so what kyrie is drawing on is nero's magic tank most of the time. nero has it but he's unable to use it.#this way nero and kyrie can fight together if she does decide to fight. or she can do little magic w/o using his demonic power#i will maybe expand on this later i was supposed to go to bed forty minutes ago whoops#eruwrites#devil may cry

I keep thinking about how Ashton’s been acting lately and I coming back to them saying that they’ve earned “a minor sense of superiority” for all they’ve been through in their life and then how through a lot of what they said after that demonstrates that that sense of superiority goes far beyond being minor. Especially the way they laughed and said “who else?” when the Hells asked themselves if they should really be the ones deciding if the balance of the world should be upended and remade. It carried a lot less of a “well who else is going to do it?” energy that I think it might’ve once carried, the sort of thing the Nein might say, and instead felt more like a “you really want anyone else but us choosing that?”, which aligns with the wildly out-of-hand way they were behaving in the council meeting. They really seem to be placing themself above everyone that was in that council room, especially with how they repeatedly said that all of those delegates are stupid and blind and so on, particularly those who answer to divine powers (I cannot remember if Ashton directly said that last night, but I feel like it would align with what they did say even if they didn’t put it that clearly).
What makes that very interesting to me is that Ashton is also a vessel for a higher power now, a power that—from the way they seem to be looking at things—is grander and older and more powerful than the gods themselves; a titan. They may not answer to Rau’shan, but they channel her power just as surely as any cleric or paladin might channel their deity’s powers. Which is a little hypocritical, but that’s not my point.
I keep wondering that if maybe, probably on a subconscious level, that connection to an older power than the gods is fueling Ashton’s sense of superiority over the gods and those who follow them.
#I don’t have a clean conclusion to this I just ended up rambling againnnnnn#but yeah I’m like. if the gods were gone and Exandria somehow survived#and divine magic was wiped from the world#ashton would still have their powers#because they’re a vessel for two beings actually that are older than the gods#rau’shan and the Luxon#but I only mentioned the Titan stuff in the post bc they don’t know shit abt the Luxon right now beyond what Essek and Leylas have said#whereas they have a lot more info about the Titans to fuel this infuriating superiority complex#don’t get me wrong I’ve loved Ashton from the moment they were introduced#but I am so frustrated with how they’ve been behaving#the shouting during the council meeting was… painful#bestie you’ve got a charisma score of 6 pls let the charisma casters handle this#and also Orym. let the talkers and the level headed one handle it#you can argue with them later while you make out#critical role#cr spoilers#ashton greymoore#Quinn metas#cr meta

more for the garashir fairytale grab bag AU I am never going to actually write: garak knows exactly what would break his curse from the start, he just never tells anyone for the longest time b/c he's so sure it could never happen
(it's asking forgiveness, of course. he thinks it's tain's forgiveness he needs, and tain is fucking dead and knew he would be by the time garak woke up so it seems the perfect unbreakable parting fuck-you revenge curse. and garak would expect nothing less from his father than that, so he's resigned to dwindling away painfully. enter julian bashir and his fierce force-of-nature compassion (and also secret illicit immense magical powers) with a steel chair!!! to go 'OH YEAH??? we'll see about that', as you might expect. oh. OH necromancer-ish julian calling tain's ghost up to ask him about what the hell he did and how to undo it, ala his gambit to go see him the wire? and the knowledge he gains from that is what confirms garak's suspicions as to what is Up with this handsome young healer mage because it could be known only by those long dead. cue east of the sun west of the moon part of the narrative once julian understands his game is up and runs away??
anyway getting some true love's kissing in by the end of it all is just a nice bonus it's not needed like strictly magically for either of their situations lol)
#garashir#star trek#ds9#star trek ds9#elim garak#julian bashir#the sleeping beauty part is an entirely separate curse btw. tain really wanted that shit to pile up lol#I wonder what fucked up thing you'd do to Julian magically to be the equivalent of genetic engineering#splicing something into his soul maybe? turning him into a wildly powerful but 'dangerous' kind of sorcerer in the process?#something about violating his innermost essence at least that's kind of the thematic significance of it#people pointing at him after the reveal going 'THOSE ARE DARK LORD POWERS YOU FREAK' and he's like#'*barely holding back tears of frustration and exhaustion* I just wanna be a lil healer main can you guys fucking let me live....'#maybe like... when you've cracked someone's soul open once it's considered a sanctity breached or something. anything could get in#maybe ds9 is like... the cardassian ruin where they find garak sleeping (yeah I'm doing an sga/howl's moving castle thing in my head)#he still claims he's just a simple tailor upon being woken up and getting the castle to fly them out of danger. of course.#he also still hates the place as much as he did in the show it was considered a shitty backwater place to be stationed back in the day#guys. I think I am cooking but unfortunately I'm perpetually burnt out I don't have enough fuel to make anything of it lmao

If I have energy I want to draw out some designs for an au I'm spontaneously writing.
(Medieval times, there's a Prophecy. Nightmare rules over this kingdom and is supposed to complete this prophecy, he refuses to because it would harm the people. Dream was sent away and banished by Night because he was dis-illusioned into thinking the prophecy was a Good Thing abd what he was raised to complete. Night collected his Knights (Killer, Dust, Horror, and Cross most recently) and trains them and tells them the truth of the prophecy. They're loyal to him. One day the magic of the prophesy (Apple Magic) leaves Nightmare unexpectedly, returning him to the state he was in before he accepted the mantle. This puts a target on his back and gives Dream a huge advantage in maybe making a comeback. The Knight's decide that their King (newly a young lad and variably scared and frightened) must be protected and they run the kingdom as he normally would, while also ensuring he survives and that the prophecy can't be completed.)
#yes this is fueled from RealAge AU vibes#and yes I technically have circled back around to my own initial post but like#the visual of these specific guys who've had various hardships in their lives suddenly like... idk... gaining a purpose and a protector in#Nightmare then seeing him reduced to a fraction of what they'd known him as. and still deciding to follow and care for him?#this au gives off distinct Older Brother energy because Night is like... 13-ish and not young enough to#baby but not old enough to resume his duties immediately#and he's got this like... awkward teen anxiety suddenly flooding through him that he doesn't know how to cope with#so the guys turn around and use lessons Night taught them while they adjusted to help him#Night's weak from Magic-loss? well he used to make sure Dust got bed rest and a meal so that's what we'll do!#Night is losing a huge chunk of his autonomy? They found a hobby for Killer so what does Night like?#just... yeah#plus Dream fully believes his bro pushed him out due to greed for power and had gathered forces to rally with him during exile#so he's the returned golden prince#and I imagine here that the final stand involves the knights scattering to stop Dream's forces while Killer stays with Night (<- most loyal)#and Killer hides Night right before Dream shows#and Dream says a bunch of vitriolic stuff about how Night ran and sacrificed his men and such and cuts down Killer with a near fatal blow#and Night finally manages to get out of wherever Killer stashed him and there's a moment where#Dream is seeing his little brother abd Night is seeing the man who lost his rights to be called brother when he attacked his Knights#and like... idk man#also Error is definitely Night's court magician/wizard because he bends reality in ways it really shouldn't#and here Error is younger because. i. I like the idea of an Errormare subplot but also like. the idea of scary spooky Overlord NM looking at#the wizard who just turned a vase inside out who's like 10 and learning he's a runaway and sponsoring him? yeah that's silly.#turns out Apple Night appreciated Error's raw talent. after the fact Night realizes he admires Error. insane tonal whiplash from his Knights#who have Zero protocol for courtships and kinda like. just watch it happen after the chaos is over#Okay that's all. i need to do my homework

“it wasn't intentional. their magic just tends to burrow into everything that it can, like the persistent roots of a stubborn tree.” I do mean everything, btw. if you’re around io enough you’re getting io magic residue on you.
#⌜❝ 𝚃𝙱𝙳. so long. good luck. goodbye. ❞ ⌟#it because io is just so full up of power that they can’t contain it all#they use excess when using it too. at that#but they have so much that it doesn’t really matter? they don’t need to exercise restraint with the fuel#it’s a plentiful and replenishing resource#also io just exudes magic with the mildest swings of emotions too at that#anyway my point is that if u hang around them a lot ur magic stinky

Summer wine subtext? Summer wine subtext.
The Kellila "fight" scene where they break the summer wine bottle in Threads makes me think about the song "Summer Wine" because well, of the association with the title, but not only that. You may have heard Lana's rendition but the original is from the 60's and it's by Nancy Sinatra and I don't know, it just fits the mood and it might've inspired that? I can't unsee it now. lol. Because the summer wine this song is about isn't just *literal* wine, but also refers to the woman's body in the song. That song has sexual overtones and it's about two people who are two thieves/outlaws who are drinking together. They end up in bed but the woman only wants to steal the man's belongings by offering him her "summer wine" so he would be knocked out while she robs him. He then wakes up the day after and he realizes she is gone with all of his money but he would still want to be with her. Well... isn't also how Kell and Lila's first encounter went??? More or less, at least. Meeting while he was covered in blood (red as wine) and quite dazed and Lila stealing the black stone. Then tying him to her bed once he appeared out of the blue and stealing the stone back. And the same thing is true for the hand-to-hand in the hull in Threads. Kell catches Lila off guard, and he ends up on the top of her and she tells him to get off her unless he wants to "have a tumble" (which makes him turn red). These two love challenging each other like this and they also have fun doing so, because it spices up their relationship. So yeah. The summer wine might be a sexual subtext just like the fake melee was subtle foreplay.
Least but not last, some summer wine is bright red or orange/rosé. The summer wine could also be a nod to Kell's hair and Lila passes her summer wine stained hand through his hair before they leave the hull (!!!).
And well, I just love this side of them??? The playfulness??? Being comfortable around each other??? Having a spicy bedroom life??? Adoring each other from the tips of their hair to the tips of their feet???
They make me unwell. I just love them so much.
#kellila#adsom#kell maresh#delilah bard#lila bard#and this my friends is one of the reasons why I like to write Kellila smut lmao they fuel my inspiration#they have several s*xual subtext and it's handled in such a delicate way#threads of power#the fragile threads of power#shades of magic#my favorite Summer Wine cover is the one by Ville Valo and Natalia Avelon btw go listen to it

Those OCs look cool, its the middle of the night, i cant sleep, so heck it whats the lore reason for the casual fit on Drexel?
SOOOOOOOOOOO the world my little OCs live in is EARTH!
but a very, very weird Earth.
Imagine if on Earth, as we were developing technology and bringing advancement into society that we discovered MAGIC! It was used to power almost everything and created a very easy shortcut to create around the same level of tech we might have in our real world right now, and maybe further. Magic was innate to almost everyone and easily usable, it was a concept as solid and concrete as gravity.
And then imagine if, one day, the magic malfunctioned. The once-controllable element of magic suddenly goes haywire, becoming unpredictable and dangerous. Cities, infrastructure, governments, and technology, all that relied on arcane sources were suddenly unstable and it sent the world into what was essentially an apocalyptic event.
Now, hundreds of years later, Earth has recessed back into the Dark Ages. Magic is universally banned and a government of super powerful figures called the Lord's Court have an order of Knights specifically tasked with hunting down any magic users. There's laws and bans on scientific renovation of any kind, in fear that magic may further induce harm on the land.
BUT, there's still relics of modern Earth all around. Drexel is one of the few mages who still practices magic in attempt to calm its wild nature. He's also a HUUUGE fucking fanboy of any pre-Cataclysm (that's what the magic malfunctioning apocalypse is called!)
So he's a bit of a nerd loser and ALSO is insanely obsessed with fashion and all sorts of stuff from the old world. He also just has an immense amount of knowledge about it too!
(this is the vibe)
#chris talks#i should make a tag for these specific ocs#but i dont really have a name yettttt#but ive been referring to them as#knights and necromancer#in my google docs so we'll go with that#not everything is crazy realistic when it comes to the whole historical element and like if we're being REAL#magic being a replacement for fossil fuel power sources n stuff like that#also the whole IDEA of mass-use of magic#would change the world a LOOOOOOOOT more than just kinda “modern day irl world but with cool magic powers”#but also im not thinking abt it too hard just yet#i just want to design fun little guys to animate for my portfolio and also to brainrot abt

no drawing energy but Rät by Penelope Scott THE Edvard/Astor breakup song of all time. I took the help I took the cash I would've taken your last name. Tesla broke a patent all you ever broke were hearts. I can't believe you tore humanity apart. With the very same machines that could have been our brand new start.
#oxventure#the emphasis on that final line is fueled very much sierradee's ADHD edvard art#a sense of resenment that astor is responsible for keeping magic back from the world. 'resenment for all your tremendous work in just#adapting when there was a powerful solution out there. waiting.'#the impact of that single work of art and analysis on my appreciation of edvard lumiere cannot be overstated.

Just realized that if Cia is indeed a guardian of time and IF Hylia had chosen her original form to watch over the triforce inbetween incarnations and the cycle- then Cia would MOST DEFINITELY know about the zonai and I gotta fucking think about the implications of that shit
#literally there's no reason to think that think that she WOULDN'T know about the zonai#I'm just. cia is a sorceress but I feel like she's in the same kinda class as rauru and sonai#they individually have powers that are not fueled by any sort of zonai tech#but the ZONAI ARM FOR EXAMPLE cant be tech... it has to be an extension of some kinda magic...#a kind of magic that cia is likely aware and knowledgeable of-

We Made Magic and then Went That Doesn’t Count as Magic.
All modern tech is just about magic, the only reason we think it isn’t is because we are so used to it. Computers are literally symbols carved into a specially treated mineral and then lined with expensive and rare minerals such as gold, silver, and copper bound together by melted lead. This rune tablet then has harnessed lightning, fire, wind, light, or water that is kept in a specially prepared mineral sack run through it and it somehow produces a thinking mineral trapped within that arcane rune. If it’s damaged the rune likely ceases to work until it is repaired properly. We’ve all but got blood from a stone at this point because we’ve tricked minerals into thinking and processing information for us. And it works faster than a human can, intaking and processing information in the instance it would take us to understand what we wanted our hand to do. Then we combine these rune minds with plates of thousands of specially prepared crystals and use them to let the rune mind show us what it’s thinking and to allow non-mages to utilize the rune mind more easily. If you had to explain to anyone how a phone worked it would sound insane. We created thinking rocks and pumped them full of harnessed elements then chained them to a different rock (usually lithium for modern electronics) and then combined those rocks with specially made crystals so they could show us what they’re thinking.
#We've normalized what is literally magic#This is how we always describe magic as working#Ritual circles#Arcane runes#expensive components#and harnessed natural power to fuel the thing#We live in a magic world but convince ourselves it is mundane#Fantasy Magic is right there in your fucking pocket and somehow we've forgotten that
