How I Function

This is how I organize my day, prioritize, realistically plan out, and help with my executive dysfunction so I can actually get things done.

Now, this doesn't work all the time, and some days I just don't want to do certain things so nothing gets done, but it still helps me a lot. The best part is that it only takes a sticky note and a pen.

[ID = a large purple sticky note with a list of what I need to do for the day followed by a more in depth list that is numbered. Further explanation will be described below.]

I start off by thinking of everything I need or want to get done for the day and write it down. This itself helps with my executive dysfunction bc it just presents a short task in a visual format so I can see there's really have x amount, like say only four things to be done, not "I have an overwhelming amount of things to do like this and then I gotta do that and then oh no this also needs to be done ugh and that too".

Today I need to go to the UPS store to return my Amazon book rentals, I need to clean the litter box, I want to fit in going for a walk, and I also want to measure how big I want my desk to be. Simple enough considering that's literally all the "chores" I need to do for the day. But, "going to the UPS store" is really overwhelming; I need to get dressed, I need to brush my teeth, I need to drive there, prepare to talk to people, etc. So after considering my list, I think what is the most logical plan for the day. Can I combine any of the items? Or combine the preparation for any of the items? Yes I can!

I start a new numbered list below of what to do first, second, third, etc. until my first list is all incorporated. This can be as extensive as possible listing every step to take, or even just rearranging the first list to prioritize.

The first thing I need to do for any of the items is to get dressed. I can't go to the store or for a walk in my PJs, I don't wanna clean the litter box in my PJs, and to measure my room space for my desk is gonna be a lot of work and I don't wanna sweat in my PJs. If I did have an item that didn't require me to get dressed, that would go at the top of the list. Ok so #1, get dressed.

After that, any item is possible. I have to prioritize going to the UPS store, but that requires leaving the house, so I'll start simple with #2 being clean the little box. Not written but thought of, while I'm leaving the house I can throw away the cat poop in the outside garbage can.

To go to the UPS store, I gotta put my rentals in their packages. I also remember that there's a UPS store down the street and I don't have to drive, I could walk! Going for a walk means putting on shoes. So, #3 is packing up the books and putting on my shoes. Again, you can make this very explicit with #3 being pack up the books and #4 being to put on shoes, but my brain is fine with it being lumped together for today.

Now at this point in my timeline I'm ready for both a walk and to return my books and can check both items off my list in one trip!

The last thing is to measure how big I want my desk to be. That can be done at any time (like not before 7pm when the store closes or before nightfall when I don't want to leave the house to throw away cat poop) and just needs to be done before tomorrow when I go buy wood. So that item automatically goes at the bottom of my list. I add eating as #5 since I want to fit that in mentally, and #6 become measuring for my desk.

Tldr/My formula: List everything you want to do for the day as they come to mind on the first part of a sticky note/piece of paper. After considering what needs to be done for all the items, when they need to be done by, and what you are most motivated to do, list them out in a longer list incorporating the smaller steps that need to be done. Even if something is important, time sensitive items go first, and try start with something that isn't too time consuming so you can jump start your motivation!

I've also written my list out on lined paper with margins and if it's time sensitive with a precise time or you really need to organize your day by the minute/hour, you can write times in the margins. This is really helpful to budget my time to see if 8 items is really possible for the day or my 5-7 page paper will take up so much time I only can realistically do 2 other things.
