#that actually his CO refused to authorize an official rescue of OVER FOUR HUNDRED SOLDIERS so steve had no choice

Sometimes I think about whether it was made public knowledge or put into the historical record that Colonel Phillips didn’t want to rescue the Kreischsberg prisoners and was fully intending to leave 400+ men there to die at the hands of the N*zis because it ‘wasn’t worth the effort of trying’, and that that in large part factored into Steve’s decision to disobey direct orders and do it anyway.
I doubt it. They wouldn’t want to make one of their own army leaders look bad, so they probably reframed it as either Steve was specifically told not to do it alone, or it was reframed altogether as some kind of narrative of bravery and sacrifice where it was planned all along and Phillips’ initial intent to leave them all there to rot was wiped from memory.
Something to think about.
#personal#i like to think steve comes out much later and tells everyone what really happened#that actually his CO refused to authorize an official rescue of OVER FOUR HUNDRED SOLDIERS so steve had no choice#i wonder what people would think about that
