I feel like a lot of the bad faith interpretations, and straight up misinterpretations, of Dany stem from not recognizing that, maybe tied with Bran, she's probably the least literal POV character.
While yes, Dany the teenage girl is an interesting character in her own right, her story is not primarily a 'psychological' character story. She's symbolic of the larger social movements that she leads, and, more than being an individual literal character, she embodies a sociological story.
Which is why not only does MaD qUeEn Dany not make sense with what's established, it would be incredibly problematic if GRRM DID go down that path. And I don't just mean because it's a tired, sexist trope.
#rip i will find better ways to phrase this one day#someone please drop me some good recommendations for books and essays about literary and media analysis#that actually factor in the reader/consumer's side and how stories are received#like actual essays and books on a professional or academic level I don't mean think pieces#asoiaf#daenerys targaryen

some meta on chapter 236 regarding Kotaro, Tomura's quirk upgrade, and potential ways for AFO to continue tormenting the Shimuras in the future
okay I’m back. here’s another ask from @thequietmanno1! I think there’s like four or five more of these to go. my initial goal of getting through them all in an evening and then going on to respond to other asks as well may have been sliiightly unrealistic. idk sometimes you just sit down and you’re all “fuck yeah I’m about to type me some WORDS” and you get carried away.
this ask is in regards to chapter 236, I’m pretty sure!
---
To be honest, when Kotaro smacked Tenko with the weed clippers (giving him the mouth scar he has today) I read that as being a bit accidental and fueled by panic. I think he was trying to maybe push Tenko back with the weed clippers, use them as a pole to shove him away before whatever effect his quirk was causing affected him. But due to his blind panic, footing due to the decaying ground, and perhaps a subconscious anger towards his son for what he’d done, he hit him in the face again. Partly by accident and bad luck- his face afterwards is clearly somewhat shocked and ashamed by what he’d just done, though he’s still scared of Tenko- but his next action, rather than resuming his attack with the weed clipper in his right hand, was to reach out with his empty left hand towards Tenko, perhaps realising that he didn’t want to hurt him, and he needed to treat his son with kindness, appeal to him as a parent rather than as an abuser. But it was simply too late.
You could also see this as a kind of “what you are in the dark” test that Kotaro failed- his wife tried to help Tenko to her last breath, but when faced with his impending death, Kotaro’s action was to instinctually protect himself with violence. Still, it’s interesting that the whole “AFO give him the decay quirk” doesn’t have any definitive answers to support or deny it yet. Like, if this was just a casual reader checking out the story, they might accept the “destructive mutation” explanation without question, but thanks to your theorising there’s a definite possibility of there being more to the story than Tenko knows. But crucially, while Horikoshi hasn’t outright confirmed it yet, he hasn’t given us anything that denies this as a possibility either, so it lets us, the readers, feel smart for noticing the little clues before they become relevant.
That said, again this chapter brings up something Re-Destro and Toga alluded to- that the concept of ‘personality powers’ is very much at play in the MHA universe, and may even be enforced by the power itself. Toga had a yearning and lust for blood as the result of her quirk; even though that isolated her from normal society, it was still part of her psyche, something that just existed alongside her, as natural as the urge to breathe. Similarly, Tenko here seems to have had a natural urge to destroy things around him. His statement about how “the itch went away” leads me to believe that the itch was his subconscious desire to destroy contrasted with his childlike innocence and non-desire to harm others. Hell, perhaps his allergies were a side effect of suppressing his power’s potential and it causing microscopic damage to his body- decaying his skin cells, for example. At the very least, the weird damage around his eyes doesn’t seem to be caused by a normal allergy. Plus, if he got the quirk at some point before we think he did- he might have received it as some undocumented point in the past, and the policeman dropping him off could be AFO in disguise checking up on his investment and his progress towards using the quirk- then there’d be time for it to affect his body and be mistaken for an allergy. The damage to his eyes doesn’t seem to be too bad when we first see him, so he can’t have had it for long.
Incidentally, here we can see that Tenko’s powers effect seems to be tied to his emotions, similarly to how black whip is to Deku (perhaps, when Shigaraki gets All for One’s quirk, he’ll be gifted with Quirks that complement and contrast with Deku’s own 7 quirks, just to balance out their battles?) Tenko’s first use on Mon seemed accidental and left the dog mostly intact- you can see the whole left side of his body in one piece, so the dog was killed simply because he was in contact with Tenko’s fingers. But with the others, it seems like the decay almost sought them out, moving from object to object until it reached its intended targets, like a wave of corruption. Hana wasn’t directly touched- Tenko just grabbed her clothes, and his mom and the grandparents were destroyed when the decay spread through the grounds towards them. On the panel where Kotaro first sees Tenko and the destruction, you can see that the decay stopped shortly after reaching the spots where their bodies were standing. And when Tenko sees Kotaro, the decay- which had stopped- starts up again even stronger than before, completely destroying the yard and preventing Kotaro from running away. It seems like the decay is fueled by Tenko’s subconscious hatred towards his family for their treatment during his abuse, attacking them based on his pure emotional response towards them even when his mind and heart are screaming otherwise. It’s like it’s keyed directly into the emotion of Pure Hate, and that may be why Tenko’s usage of it varies so much throughout the series.
I think AFO telling him to keep the hands close may have been a sick means of giving him control over that Primal Emotion, and the quirk with it. The feeling of hatred that drives Tomura now is so all consuming that his Quirk’s initial usage seems indiscriminate- he hates the world entire, so his quirk destroys everything all 5 fingers touch, but that ‘5 finger discount’ rule may just have been a rule AFO helped implant in his mind during his Control phase growing up. He can actually use the decay without it, but doing so seems to make it more powerful. Like, learning to use it with 5 fingers made the quirk easier to control, but weaker overall, hence why Aizawa didn’t lose his arm. As the series has progressed and Tomura’s enmity with Midoriya and the losses he’s had to endure around the new symbol have shaped him, Tomura’s become more capable of mastering his actions and emotions, his personality slowly changing from the experiences he’s faced into someone more in control of himself. Hence his power now reaching a new, more controlled state as he remembers his childhood trauma and thus unlocks the raw destructive power he had with that trauma, now more emotionally equipped to handle it, focus it and use it to his will.
This ‘targeted’ aspect of the quirk may be why it suddenly seems to develop a ‘corruption spreading’ effect during this arc. If the Quirk’s tied into his emotions and perceptions of what he’s using it on, then he was able to dust the entire group and once (and part of the street they were standing on) because his sleep-deprived perception perceived them as one large object, hence allowing him to use it on a large area. Similarly, when Shigaraki dusts the tower, neither Giran nor Re-Destro were affected despite this chapter making it clear that the decay can spread through the ground, because Shigaraki didn’t see them in the tower, and wasn’t ordering the quirk to affect them. (His desire to rescue Giran may also have been a factor.) And it didn’t affect Re-Destro because he’d just been a voice on a radio to Shigaraki up till then, so he didn’t have an ‘image’ to focus the decay with.
Also, I read this somewhere- can’t remember the source- but the deaths of Tenko’s family are symbolic of their relationship and actions towards Tenko’s abuse. Mon died loving and hugging Tenko and not making a sound despite literally being spit into pieces, because he was the boy’s source of comfort after he got locked in the garden. Hana turned her back on Tenko when she pinned the blame on their trespassing on his desire to see his grandma, and died with her back to him. The grandparents died standing far away from Tenko, just as they stood aside when Kotaro locked him out. His mother died trying to make a futile attempt to love and confront him that never managed to reach him or stop the pain he was feeling. And Kotaro died leaving a physical scar on his son, rather than a ton of mental ones, and was the only one the decay was focused on, hence why his body was almost completely decayed apart from the hands, and his house that he built to deny heroes was also destroyed. Also here we get an idea of what Tenko’s decay actually does- it seems to split the target apart into small individual chucks like they’ve been hit by a messy version of a Blade Mode move from Revengance. The more modern, controlled version Shigaraki uses in the present day seems to apply the principle on a microscopic level, appearing to ‘dust’ the target as it falls apart into its component molecules. The preciseness of the splitting seems to vary with the level of enmity and Shigaraki’s perceptions. Hana and the rest were somewhat intact, but Kotaro seemed to get more shredded than the others, because Tenko focused his pure hatred on him and the house that symbolised his control over his son, and the torment he’d suffered within its walls, so his currant ‘hate everything’ mentality allows him to freely use the quirk within the self-imposed ‘5 finger’ restriction in a more precise and focused manner in the present.
Lastly, I feel confident in predicting that at some point in the future, Midoriya is gonna discover the truth of Shigaraki’s origins, and that will, in turn, let Nana witness what became of the son she left behind. I see two ways this is possible. Firstly, Deku’s freaky past-vision powers that he’s experiencing with OFA may also allow him to somehow interact with Shigaraki at some point and see inside his nemesis’s head, giving him a good idea of what made him into his mortal enemy and letting him recontextualise Tomura as his opposite- someone who started from a similar place, but took a different path to him. Perhaps the fact that Tomura has part of Nana’s DNA would allow Midoriya the ability to interact with him in specific circumstances- OFA contains Nana’s spirt, so it may react to familiar DNA that it once resided in and was nurtured with. Alternatively, AFO, after being freed by Shigaraki, may lure Midoriya to a remote, isolated location and, rather than hurting him, will play footage of Tenko’s origin and subsequent rampage in front of the horrified teen, captured from Spy cameras he discreetly planted around the house shortly after he gave Tenko the Quirk, just to taunt Midoriya, and more specifically Nana and All Might, about how hard the previous generations failed him, and how he’s nothing but a vessel of evil and hatred worthy of carrying AFO’s legacy forward. Perhaps your theory that AFO was the actual first Holder and the two Quirks are one and the same, and thus joined together, may allow him to directly interact with and taunt the previous holders ‘face-to-face’ as it were. My fondness for the former makes me reluctant to support the “AFO gave Tenko his Quirk” theory simply because it would be so much more ‘devastating’ if he was actually innocent of this particular tragedy, and could smugly rub that fact in the heroes faces.
Frankly, we won’t get answers to the theory that he gave Tenko an extraordinary lethal quirk and just waited for the explosion until he’s out, but I like the fact that, one way or another, AFO had a hand in shaping Tenko’s origin as a villain by forcing Nana to abandon Kotaro and then killing her before they could reconcile. That said, I feel it would be so much more narratively traumatic and damaging to the heroes if he could claim, with complete honesty and no means of lying or twisting the truth, that that indirect abandonment was the extent of his involvement. Sure, he took advantage of a godsend opportunity, but he’s innocent of the abusive household atmosphere that poisoned Tenko and his subsequent Lethal Rampage- that’s all on All Might, Gran Torino and most especially Nana. If the former ‘past-vision’ method is how Midoriya learns of it, then it would also allow Nana to show and express her grief at how badly things turned out for her child and her well-meaning intentions- I can totally see this so far strong, confident, charming and reliable woman that we’ve seen so far in All Might’s flashbacks being so overwhelmed by the enormity of her failure that she collapses to her knees in a wordless scream, exactly like Deku did when Bakugou got dragged through the Warp gate. If it’s the latter ‘spy camera’ version, then it would serve no purpose for Midoriya directly, but would allow AFO to hurt the previous Holders through him. After all, doesn’t he seem like exactly the kind of person who’d cause a dead woman to cry, just to savour her misery?
---
damn dude, you sure know how to paint a picture lol. this is a very specific theory, and I’m not sure I could see it happening myself, although it would sure make for some good angst. but... how to explain this. just, I’m very attached to the idea of Nana being every inch the strong, unshakable woman with an indomitable spirit that All Might saw her as. so I wouldn’t actually want to see her break down like this. this is the woman who taught All Might, the Symbol of Peace, what it means to smile. this is the person whose spirit carried him through his darkest times. so the thought of her being reduced to a helpless image of grief, needing Deku to avenge her, just rubs me the wrong way. if anything, were she to ever learn the full truth, while she would no doubt be shaken, I would want her to respond with determination to save her grandchild. AFO’s already basked in enough misery; he doesn’t deserve to win this one. he consistently underestimates people’s hearts and spirits, and I want that to continue to be his downfall.
backtracking to the beginning of your post, I like your interpretation of the complicated thoughts running through Kotaro’s head in his last moments, and his actions. he was scared, and clearly isn’t one to shy away from violence. but at the same time this was his son, and in spite of his abusive behavior, he still clearly cares about him, and was already feeling remorse about his earlier actions based on his conversation with his wife and in-laws. I really like what you said about the contrast between him and Tenko’s mother. it really is a shame, Kotaro. in another life you could have been a better man.
I’m still holding out hope for the AFO-gave-him-the-quirk theory to be true, though it could go either way! as I’ve said, I still think Tomura will turn on AFO eventually, although it will definitely take some time, and I agree with @addermoray that Tomura’s already far gone enough at this point that his initial response to learning about the deception might even be gratitude. but I’m still banking on his once-it-has-time-to-sink-in response being decidedly less grateful (or at the very least, being more of a “you know what, my family may have sucked, but fuck you too”). that may require some Deku-jesusing to put things into perspective for him. anyways, this is basically just more of the same old speculation, and I think you know my thoughts on that by this point lol.
I don’t think Tomura is actually going to get AFO’s quirk, though? I could be dead wrong about that one. but that’s one thing I could never see AFO doing, even if he did intend to die and leave Tomura to carry on his legacy. I feel like he’d let the quirk die with him. Tomura, in any case, certainly appears to be strong enough on his own as it is now, sob.
I think you’re absolutely right about the nature of Tenko’s quirk and how it ties in to his emotions. and interesting analysis of how Tomura’s decay and its spread works! I haven’t attempted to give it much thought (part of me may be hoping that Horikoshi’s constant urge to explain quirks in great detail will win out sooner or later and we’ll get an official explanation), but this seems pretty accurate.
and that symbolism with Tomura’s family’s deaths also went over my head when I read the chapter, but that also seems spot on! I keep finding new ways to appreciate this flashback, man. it just traumatizes in all the right ways, damn.

So I know that you've had tons of experience with writing, but how would you say that compares to your first IF novel? Are/were you nervous during the process, or was it smoother since you already had a world fleshed out?
Thanks for the great question! I’d say writing an IF novel is both much more difficult and much more freeing (and therefore easier) than a conventional novel. What I like most about the medium (and why I chose it) is that it allows you spend “screentime” with as many characters as the player wants. Whereas in a conventional novel, there is finite space–there are a certain number of pages for it to be printed on–so having a long conversation with a side character about their favorite foods or elaborating on their backstory and motivations (if they didn’t tie into the overall ‘plot’ of the book) was wasting the reader’s time. In a conventional novel, you have to be ruthless: you only have the reader for a little while, so too many side stories or other character arcs in 300 pages would be over-complex or confusing. In an IF novel, they get to choose which stories they want to explore, which characters they want to interact with, so there can be as little or as much ‘story’ as the reader prefers. You’re not holding them hostage by forcing them to read about so-and-so’s family until it gets back to the main plot. If they do read about so-and-so’s family, it’s of their own prerogative. It’s very freeing, and it allows me to sit down and treat each NPC as being as fully-fleshed and important in their own life arc as the MC is–something I could never do in a conventional novel. It also allows me to let the reader ‘explore’ the world in a much more nuanced and immersive way than in a novel. In a novel, if the main character picks up a crumpled newspaper ad or foregoes buying a drink because they don’t have enough gold, it’s like, “What was the point of this moment?”
In IF, there isn’t that scrutiny: picking up a newspaper ad and having it in your inventory to read later, or having to keep track of how much gold your character actually has and how much it takes to buy a drink in this world–it all slowly adds to and builds on the player’s understanding of the world. It’s okay for them to ‘absorb’ this extraneous information, because in IF, it’s more immersive: you are really inhabiting and controlling a person in this world. In a conventional novel, these details don’t “matter.”
I wasn’t nervous about starting the process of writing this game, mostly because of what you said: the world and characters were already worked out and familiar, so I was confident in my ability to convey them to the readers without too many plot holes or dangling questions. (It also helped that I’d had experience writing IF before, though not in ChoiceScript!)The one thing I will say has presented difficulty for me (and it might be a difficulty unique to writers with pre-existing work) is striking the balance between a player-controlled MC and an MC who must have a little life in them in order to drive forward the story. It’s especially difficult because this MC ‘replaces’ the protagonist of the novel series ShoH is based on, so it’s hard to keep that protagonist’s personality and feelings out of the MC. It’s difficult for me to juggle asking the player how the MC feels about some things–how much control do they want to have over this avatar?–and allowing the MC to have some common-sense reactions in order for the scene to proceed without breaking it up with yet another ‘choice’ to make. For example, I received a message in the early days of posting the demo where (after MC was confronted by Croelle about questions of free will) a reader wanted to have a long philosophical debate with Croelle about free will instead of having the reaction of “…who the hell is this guy and why is he talking to me?” As a writer, I thought anybody–not just this particular MC–would have a reaction of surprise when being randomly asked about free will by a stranger. But being constantly cognizant that the MC’s reaction might turn off a person who wanted to have more control or do something else is very difficult to balance. The other thing that’s different about IF is that (with Hosted Games) the readers/consumers are a much bigger part of the creative process. In conventional fiction, as you’re writing your novel or short story or poetry, the most feedback you’re going to get is having your story workshopped by peers or mentors. But their feedback is usually technical (at least in my experience), focusing on how the story works, and critiques on its content can be dismissed with “it’s not their cup of tea,” “they don’t usually read this genre”, “I’m not writing this story for them.” With IF, the readers that you are getting feedback from are uniquely also characters in the story you are weaving. They’re not just outsiders, looking in, pointing things out but ultimately detached from the final product: their desires and experiences are inherently going to be a part of the story. Factoring that in--but also being able to hold onto your creative vision without having it diluted by a thousand different preferences and requests--is probably the tensest part of writing a Hosted Games IF. That’s something I’ve never dealt with before, and in my personal opinion--aside from everyday life getting in the way--a failure to balance it is probably why a lot of WIPs fall apart or get abandoned. The pressure is a lot!
Of course, I still love it, which is why I’m still here and why this project has become such a big part of my life! It’s such a pleasure to interact with the community and stretch my writing in a way that you can’t achieve in any other genre. I’m very glad that I found ChoiceScript and that it’s providing me a platform to expand on the world of Blest in a way that could have never happened in one book (or two, or eight). If there’s anyone out there who’s thinking about writing a ChoiceScript game, or even just wants to talk about conventional writing, I’m here and I’d love to talk about it! Thanks again for the great question, anon! It was a pleasure to answer!

4 Reasons Transparency Is the Content Marketer`s Greatest Competitive Advantage
Since the Enron scandal turned the corporate world upside down, the word 'clear' has actually ended up being a symbol of the trustworthy, reliable, and socially responsible brand. As well as, for numerous business, it has ended up being a competitive advantage. Still, some firms have a difficult time with openness. They suggest that way too much interaction can be equally as harmful as not nearly enough communication. Nevertheless, as a material online marketer or assumed leader, can you truly admit that your prices are a little bit lower compared to the competitors due to the fact that your products may not be of the same quality? How around exactly how your firm uses large information? And also, what regarding those hard-to-answer item or service-pricing inquiries to which the only from another location brief and also concise answer is 'it depends'? In this article, I will certainly say that transparency as well as a determination to deal with the hard inquiries for your audience could be your most effective one-upmanship when it pertains to attracting viewers to your long-form material marketing campaign.
McDonald's has actually possibly been one of the most highlighted public study of the transparency discussion. Viral Facebook messages, for instance, depict the restaurant as the designer of non-food products that ought to not be ingested by any type of living organism. In one such message, for instance, McDonald's is accused of making use of plastic products as sandwich active ingredients. And also, several unwary consumers pass the blatantly imprecise information in addition to the loving objective of advising their pals and family of possible danger to their health.
So, what should McDonald's have done to fix this undesirable word-of-mouth project that was clearly out of its control? Should it have maintained quiet out of fear of getting worse the damages or should it have opened up its cooking areas, procedures, and supply chains to consumer analysis? McDonald's has actually decided to become clear, developing its 'Our Food. Your Concerns' material advertising project that shows the brand name as an open book where consumers could ask any kind of and also all concerns and expect to get an honest and precise answer. Why did McDonald's select to be clear? And, should you do the very same concerning your company's hard-to-answer or frowned on concerns? I would certainly say that there are four powerful reasons you need to be taking into consideration overall openness with your audiences.
Take control of your brand name image.
It is risk-free to state that the material advertising setting of today is dramatically different from what it was even a decade earlier. Today, consumers have at their fingertips a variety of information on every company, product, service, and also sector. Not just can they access information from the very resource it stemmed, yet, as McDonald's rapidly uncovered, they have access to numerous third-party opinion blogs as well as social media pages, much of that include little exact information. As opposed to leaving your brand name picture to the whim of rumors, take into consideration resolving those rumors by not enabling them to begin. Rumors are the item of minimal communication as well as heightened subject passion. With respect to McDonald's Canada, consumers were very thinking about what they were placing in their bodies yet were not transparently offered the information they looked for. So, they began to hypothesize as well as, inevitably, make up the info themselves.
The result has actually been a brand reputation nightmare for McDonald's- one that might have been avoided if consumers were just provided the responses prior to rumors created a detrimentally viral advertising campaign for the firm. In its clear project, nevertheless, McDonald's Canada is taking control of its brand name image. As an outcome of its transparency-centered content marketing campaign, it efficiently supplies solution to 350-450 customer questions a day on Facebook and twitter, responses that would likely have actually been provided with unreliable and harmful third-party details if McDonald's Canada had actually not made itself readily available to respond to consumer questions prior to they hit the rumor mill.
Create a brand name photo of credibility.
In his book, The Rate of Depend on: The One Thing that Changes Everything, Stephen M.R. Covey explains that stability, or sincerity, is among the 4 parts of trustworthiness. With stability, even a made use of car salesperson can come to be a trusted professional in his field. Integrity involves openly showing that what you claim regarding your brand is exactly what is really occurring behind the scenes. CarMax completed this by certifying its automobiles based upon its 125+ factor assessment, prohibiting rate bargaining, and also ensuring every acquisition with a five-day, money-back assurance. Furthermore, all sales agents are paid the exact same with dealt with compensations, permitting customers to be certain no concealed agenda is driving a sales rep's interests in offering a vehicle. As opposed to questionable and also deceptive prices methods as well as concealed programs, CarMax made it easy for clients plainly to gain the information they needed by attending to on its site also forbidden sector topics such as compensation pay ranges as well as vehicle histories.
Its material advertising strolls its viewers with the methods which automobiles are picked available and its certifying process, that is, full disclosure pertaining to all of its sale automobiles. In attending to the questions consumers are asking, the company placements itself a specialist with its material instead of a press marketing expert. And also, while other pre-owned vehicle dealers continued to be in the shadows with hidden schedules and just 'as-needed' car details, CarMax's integrity-driven and also clear content marketing project became its competitive benefit as consumers crowded to a brand name they might trust.
Transparency shows experience, resulting in relying on customer partnerships.
In his write-up, "The Power of Transparent Advertising and marketing to Rock Your Business in 2012 and Beyond," Marcus Sheridan connects his story. He composes that in 2008, his firm was on the edge of insolvency. He succeeded in pulling his company up by its bootstraps with one just competitive side that he used in his material advertising campaign:
Address every inquiry we have actually ever before listened to from our customers.
Now, this may sound like a basic and also common method that could not potentially equate to an engaging competitive edge. Surely, various other business had actually welcomed the idea of fulfilling their customers' requirements in this manner in which. But, Sharidan located that this was not the case. In enhancement, he found that, with this brand-new dedication to openness, he was able to demonstrate his expertise, developing a brand name photo of skilled solution offerings that outshone his competitors.
For example, in its short article, "How Much Does a Fiberglass Pool Expense," the firm attended to the forbidden topic of product prices in an industry understood for often excessive-appearing purchase as well as installment expenses. It would certainly appear this high-cost admission would certainly avert clients. The opposite happened. Prospective clients easily discovered the brand name as its SEO rankings took off. This is exactly what consumers desired to understand as well as, as a result, for exactly what they most looked. And also, in creating a clear brand photo in a sector where defeating around the shrub prevailed technique, the brand name came to be respected as well as trusted over its rivals. It dared to level. Suffice to state, its customers and target market valued the motion: this blog message alone received 124,000 web page sights and also 1,529 inbound links.
Through openness, you reveal you care.
Genuineness informs your readers that you prefer to aid them make the most effective choice for them compared to route them to buy an item from you. CarMax has actually provided an influential sales-model in its sector because, as it has actually ended up being an open publication of information for its consumers, it has shown that, though the used car industry is well-known for self-centered and often shady sales methods, the business cares way too much about its client's interests to participate in such actions. In its material marketing project, the firm clarifies just how its sales agents are paid and specifically the sorts of damages that do and do not pass its inspection procedure before being automobiles are permitted on the sale's floor. Not normally talked about in the made use of car market, in doing so, CarMax helps its target market come to the conclusion that the company cares much more about fulfilling their needs than making a profit.
Put merely, its material marketing project serves to inform customers that the business functions with each client as a team to locate and satisfy customer needs, therefore courting clients away from rivals that may just have demonstrated a system of self-indulgent motives via marketing projects that additionally push customers to approach their brands with suspicion.
I 'd love to realise: just what is hindering you from being transparent with your readers?

Kaneki and Toukas child will live
(DISCLAIMER: This is my own opinion regarding the survivability of Kaneki and Toukas child. There's no actual proof that anything i'm saying is in fact true, and there's a possibility Ishida might just punch me in the gut and prove me wrong.)
Following the release of the latest chapter of Tokyo Ghoul:re, chapter 129, we receive confirmation that Touka is indeed pregnant, and with Kaneki as the father, the child is either a half-ghoul or half-human (im working on a meta on the genetic implications which ill post later on). While everyone has been theorizing about the possibility of a pregnancy since Ishida's drawing of Touka with a bloody belly and the burnt-womb poem; having finally received its validation, the fandom seems sure of one thing: the baby will die. Whether it will be through a natural miscarriage or during some kind of combat, the baby will certainly die. And with reason, after all, its our first time experiencing a ghoul pregnancy,of a hybrid nonetheless, and considering what we know (the ghoul mother absorbs the child, the child dies of malnutrition, etc), there's no hope for the baby. And yet, here I am,saying that I believe the child will live. Why? Well for various reasons:
1. It would be more tragic to have the child live
One of the main reasons readers believe the child is “bound to die” is because this is a tragedy manga. In fact, everything only happens in favor of this tragedy and only pain and suffering are allowed in the Tokyo Ghoul universe. So for all you sadists out there, I raise you the following question: Wouldn't it be even more tragic for the child to live? Think about it. If the baby were to die before birth, be it due to absorption or in combat, it would be sad, no doubt, but there wouldn't be that much of an impact in the story. Sure, Kaneki and Touka would suffer the loss of their infant, which would further cement the “tragic” aspect of Kaneki's life, but there was no hope that it would’ve lived anyway. Kaneki especially understands the stakes of this kind of pregnancy, and with the current situation the ghouls are in, he may even feel relieved the child didn’t come to be. Which then brings me to my point: it would be much more tragic for the child to survive. As of right now, the ghouls have mostly retreated into the depths of the 24th ward. The oggai are on patrol, killing anyone they find, adult or child. And we've seen in this chapter that the CCG has caught onto Goat and their hiding place. Especially, they'll be on the hunt for the King and his subordinates. Not only that, but the ghouls are in a dire situation. Food and resources are scarce, and the depths of the 24th ward consist mostly of ruins and broken down buildings. And we don't even know what's beyond the depths of the ward. Take all these factors into consideration and now imagine having a baby in these conditions. A newborn half-ghoul or half-human, requiring constant attention, feeding and care. Supposing Touka survives this alongside her child, she’ll be forced to exit the battlefront in favor of the infant, and become its guardian. Not only that, but a newborn is extremely fragile, especially a hybrid one, and would be an easy target. As the King's child, well, that just makes it even more of a target. And Kaneki, Touka and everyone else would know that. If, lets say, word gets out that the King has a child, I don't doubt for a minute that Furuta would set forth a race for its death, rewarding whoever kills the infant and brings back its head. And I'm sure there are quite a few characters that would be veeeery interested in its death, either for their own satisfaction or as a striking blow to the King's psyche. It would also force Kaneki to rethink his strategy, after all, he now has something very important he must protect. Other ghouls would also probably put their lives on the line for the child. The entire story would take a different shape. And that's not even considering the psychological effects of caring for this child, evidenced by Kaneki and Toukas rough childhood and family traumas. Nonetheless, if this baby comes to be, whether half-ghoul or half-human, it will have a very rough upbringing.
2. The child will become a symbol of hope
A recurring theme throughout the story, and one of Kaneki's main goals, is the possibility of coexistence between ghouls and humans. Ishida has shown us both sides of the coin, that of prey and that of predator, through the use of Kaneki's character: a human turned ghoul who has experienced firsthand both sides of the battlefield. However, at the same time, Kaneki has been shown to forsake his humanity in favor of the ghouls, acting as their King and fighting on their behalf. On the other hand, there is another character that, given different circumstances, could’ve very well taken on the role of King: Eto.
Eto was the only known natural half-ghoul, born from a human(Ukina) and a ghoul(Yoshimura). Her physiology gave her the best of both worlds: the abilities and prowess of a ghoul all while maintaining human characteristics and traits, allowing her to live both as Takatsuki Sen and the One-Eyed Owl. Her childhood allowed her to experience firsthand the plight of the ghouls, while her late mother's diary and her career as a novelist let her see the world as a human. One can’t help but wonder, had her parents raised her and her circumstances been different, what kind of world views Eto would've had and what kind of role she would’ve taken on, seeing as she believes in a society where ghouls are no longer persecuted.
What does this have to do with Kaneki and Toukas child? Well, I believe the child will take on a similar role. Whether it is half-ghoul or half-human, the child will become a mediator between both worlds. There are many theories regarding the end of Tokyo Ghoul, most saying that Kaneki will die in the end. Whether or not he’ll achieve his ghoul of coexistence, his child, being his direct descendant, could very well take on his legacy and take on the role of King, continuing the battle for a future where ghouls are no longer persecuted, becoming a symbol of hope for ghouls just like Kaneki currently is, considering its future status as both human and ghoul.
3. Allows Kaneki and Touka to have major character development
Having to take care of a newborn child will allow for some major character development, especially for Kaneki. Although he has undergone multiple changes throughout the story, one of Kaneki's main characteristics is his desire to “sacrifice himself”. Regarding this trait, his relationship with Touka has already altered this to some degree, with her existence “grounding” him, tied to his vow to protect her. Touka, as we all know, can defend and take care of herself. The same can't be said about a newborn child, especially a hybrid newborn. Fragile and defenseless, the baby will be 100% dependant on its parents for its survival, which means that staying alive and protecting the child will become the main priority. No more reckless fighting, no more aimless wandering around. Kaneki will be forced to stay alive for the sake of the child, and knowing him, i'm sure he’ll do everything he can for his infant. The same can be said for Touka, who can already be seen going as far as consuming human food just to guarantee its survival within her womb.
4. The child will become a plot moving force
It is an undeniable fact that this pregnancy has been foreshadowed for months now. Since the drawing of Touka with a bloody belly, the burnt womb poem, to the development of Kanekis and Toukas relationship, to an entire chapter dedicated to them finally consummating it. Creating all of this build-up just for the baby to die is just too anticlimactic and predictable. Pregnancy and miscarriage theories have been circulating for weeks now, and simply getting rid of the child after setting up the stage just seems too predictable and wasteful. Everyones expecting it, and story wise there's no point in introducing an element with so much potential and immediately getting rid of it. Ishida has yet to disappoint me plot wise, and I honestly think he has a lot more planned. Not only that, but, while both scenarios will have some form of impact within the story, a miscarriage will only directly affect Touka and Kaneki, who will obviously suffer for the loss of their child. On the other hand, introducing such an obstacle in the story will have multiple implications, affect various characters, and become a driving force in plot. It may even be a resource that Ishida may use to continue the story without its current main character(Boruto). Nonetheless, the stage is more than ready to receive this child, and with so much to bring to the story, I doubt Ishida would miss this chance (to bring us more misery).
In conclusion, while all the odds are against Kaneki and Toukas baby, I believe that, for the sake of the story, it'll live. However this pregnancy will progress is a complete mystery to me, but as someone who loves studying obstetrics and genetics, all this exposition on human and ghoul biology is making me brim with excitement. I can't wait to see how this will turn out and whether my theory will be right or wrong.
Thank you so much for reading, and please excuse any mistakes.

Artist Spotlight: Nightspring
The music scene is full of plentiful talent across the pop punk spectrum, however Nightspring are much more than that. The band hailing from Brisbane, Australia brings a mixed bag of sounds to the table. The five person band consisting of Michael Hermon (Vocals), Myles Vele (Vocals/Bass), Alex Woolard (Guitar), and Matthew Barkmeyer (Drums) recently released “Surrender” followed by debut album “Reflections”; a six track EP full of emotion. I sat down with the boys of Nightspring to discuss their success throughout 2019, the best tracks for newcomers, and of course their new album ‘Reflections.’
More Than A Millennial: 2019 saw the release of latest Ep ‘Reflections’. How does the music making process come about, and what inspires you in the songwriting process?
Michael: Our process has always been a bit weird, purely because we all have such conflicting schedules for the moment and don’t always have time to write together. It tends to start off with Myles writing anything from a simple seed idea to randomly showing up with a whole song already mapped out. We’ll add it to the band Dropbox and chat about it, then him and I will usually get together to work on lyrics and vocals. After that, it’s just the job of getting everyone’s parts recorded. Hopefully things will become a lot more organic in the future as we all get used to our individual writing styles.
Myles: Yeah, we’re definitely not a band that works like the old-school model of sit in a room and jam it out until you find something you like. I think that kind of mentality when it comes to writing songs like Sydney is admirable to anyone who can pick things up quickly without any real idea of where a song is going!
More Than A Millennial: The music you make embraces writing from real experiences and feelings ‘Surrender’ in particular sounds like it was a personal story. Do you find creating music easier drawing from your own lives, making it a free flowing procedure?
Michael: Surrender is definitely inspired by a personal story, it was something that happened to me a few years back. I told Myles about it and he got inspired by it I guess! In regards to drawing from real experiences, 100% easier. Every song off of Reflections was inspired by real things we’ve been through, so it adds a level of reality to the messages we’re trying to share.
Myles: Surrender is strange to me because I don’t really remember writing the lyrics so much as the instruments. I was listening to a lot of Don Broco, Muse and Limp Bizkit at the time, so instrumentally, the bass was a big factor in shaping that song. But I must say, it was super fun to experiment with how we’d lyrically showcase the personal experience through the chorus. Some of those lyrics in Surrender are some of my favourite we’ve written just because of their quotable nature.
More Than A Millennial: Who influences your style of music, is there a particular artist who inspires you all individually or as a group?
Myles: I would say there’s no particular sound that influences us, more so common bands that we listen to but don’t really aim to sound like.
Michael: We all have wildly diverse tastes in music, from metal to country to K-Pop, but I think if we all had to narrow it down, I'd probably say we’re all inspired by Linkin Park and Hands Like Houses. Our vocal inspirations tend to be very different from instrumentals though.
Myles: One hundred percent. Where we get vocal inspiration can range from a specific style to a vowel pronunciation from a specific artist, album or even song! Instrumentally, it’s just looking for something fun, be it bouncy, catchy or dramatic. That kind of unbound creativity was definitely from watching the making of Linkin Park’s Minutes to Midnight documentary one too many times.
More Than A Millennial: If you had to play a newcomer a Nightspring song to introduce them to the band, which song would you pick?
Michael: Oh man, either ‘Sydney’ or ‘Goodnight’ I think! Goodnight displays our poppier side the most and Sydney the heavier side we seem to be naturally moving towards, those seem to both be favourites at the moment for their relative dichotomy.
More Than A Millennial: A lot of musicians have recently talked about how streaming services pay very little to featured artists on their platform – what is your take on the situation? And what is the best way to support an artist in this digital age?
Myles: I think Spotify is the current trend of the music industry to evaluate an artist’s worth, which is ironic considering how little the direct return an artist gets from it is. However, I do think that from a consumer to company perspective, it does make a lot of sense how little artists receive as listeners don’t actually purchase nor own that music they listen to. It’s basically a modern-day online Blockbuster, or Video Ezy for those old enough to know what that is.
More Than A Millennial: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who was it from?
Michael: Something along the lines of ‘Sometimes you’re going to fail ten times before you succeed once, you’ve just got to make sure you keep pushing through those ten times to reach the successes’. That was Josh Ramsay from Marianas Trench after a show once. Always stuck with me.
Myles: Indirectly, ‘Love keeps us kind’ from the LInkin Park song The Messenger. Those are four impactful words to incorporate into your day to day life.
More Than A Millennial: In the last 12 months, what would you say was Nightspring’s biggest achievements?
Myles: Probably self-producing our EP. I can definitely hear things that I would change now, but if you’d have told me after ‘Looking Back’ that we’d be crazy enough to do this when we’re trying to establish ourselves strongly in the Brisbane rock scene, I’d have said it’d never happen!
Michael: It was a pretty uneventful year musically for us. ‘Reflections’ was definitely the biggest part of our year, as well as playing our first show at the premiere of a TV series. 2020 is set for much bigger achievements, I think.
More Than A Millennial: If you could put on a festival with your dream line up who would headline, and what would the theme be?
Michael:I’d annoy a lot of people and do a country festival on one stage with Sam Hunt, Florida Georgia Line and Dan + Shay, and a rock festival on the other stage with Hands Like Houses, One OK Rock and Avenged Sevenfold. See how delightfully that goes down :’)
Myles: Let’s be honest, I’d be similar and have a “levels to a mosh pit” themed festival and have a single line up with Ed Sheeran, Mike Shinoda, Stray Kids, You Me At Six, Hands Like Houses, Our Last Night and Parkway Drive! Headliner would have definitely been Linkin Park.
More Than A Millennial: With 2020 being a new decade, how will Nightspring evolve?
Myles: Oh man, in so many ways. We definitely want to not just be a band, but a broader family within the music and local community. I personally have a dream to really get into some charitable stuff like getting out on the streets and helping those in need or running fundraising events for some really cool causes through the band. The music really is just the tip of the iceberg for the kind of group Nightspring wants to evolve into, I think.
Michael: We’re always evolving, to be honest. Even in the year and a half since we released our debut single ‘Looking Back’ we’re a completely different band, so that’s a definite yes I think to evolving.
More Than A Millennial: What would be the absolute dream goal to achieve in the future? And where can our readers follow your musical journey and hopefully see you perform live?
Michael: We’re very much a band that looks to the foreseeable future first and foremost, so playing a festival Like Good Things would be an awesome achievement.
Myles: I think it’d be fair to aspire to play Good Things in Brisbane. But playing any sort of national tour beyond just the east coast would be mental.

The Fairphone 3 is an Affordable, Ethical, Sustainable Must-Have
Our verdict of the Fairphone 3: The Fairphone 3 is a great all-round, affordable Android smartphone. Although, it's the company's ethical and environmental credentials that make this phone worth the investment. 810
It’s no secret that smartphone production is not an ethical or sustainable industry. From the workers who mine the materials, all the way through to the factory line staff, modern electronics manufacturing is rife with issues.
As a conscientious consumer, you may have been looking for a better option, but found yourself lost in a sea of marketing and unproven claims. However, there is an alternative out there.
Environmentally and ethically-minded manufacturer Fairphone has been making devices since 2013, and recently launched the latest iteration of their flagship smartphone, the Fairphone 3.
Specifications
Operating System: Android 9.0
CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 632
RAM: 4GB
Storage: 64GB, expandable
Battery: 3,000mAh
Display: 5.65-inch Full HD+ with Gorilla Glass 5
Camera: 12MP front, 8MP rear
Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, NFC, Dual SIM
Ports: 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C charging port
Price: €450 (currently available in the EU & UK only)
Design
Most smartphones come in a rectangular package, roughly the size of the palm of your hand. The display dominates the front of the device. In this respect, the Fairphone 3 is no different.
At first glance, the unassuming device looks much like any other mid-range phone. However, look a little closer, and the unique details begin to show.
Front
The front of the Fairphone 3 is covered edge-to-edge by the display, aside from small segments at the top and bottom. The top of the phone houses the speaker and front-facing camera, while the bottom displays the Fairphone logo. The speaker seems unusually prominent, and that’s intentional.
This smartphone is designed to be easily repairable, so many standard components are replaceable with minimal effort, and can even be purchased from Fairphone’s website. This is part of the company’s commitment to environmental concerns. Many people upgrade their phones when they become damaged—like a broken speaker or damaged charging port—as the cost of repairing them isn’t economical.
Fairphone devices are designed to last, and the company eschews annual upgrades and releases. In fact, four years separated the release of the Fairphone 2 and Fairphone 3. Being able to service your device not only increases its lifespan but also keeps costs down, too. In keeping with this ethic, it is possible to pop-off the back of the phone to access the battery compartment and the SIM card and SD card slots.
Rear
The back is the device isn’t colored, with Fairphone opting for a translucent effect, allowing you to see an outline of the electronic components below. The 12MP camera is located on the upper left, while the fingerprint reader is slightly lower in the middle of the phone.
The placement of the fingerprint reader is a little awkward, as it’s too high up the back of the phone for your finger to land on it comfortably. Unlike many of their peers, Fairphone hasn’t removed the 3.5mm headphone jack, which can be found on the top of the phone.
On the underside, there is a single USB-C charging port. You’ll also find all the device’s buttons on the left-hand side, including options for volume up, volume down, and power.
Operating System and Software
The Fairphone 3, like the company’s previous models, runs Google’s Android operating system. While some manufacturers layer their own software atop Google’s platform, Fairphone uses stock Android in their smartphones. The device ships with Android 9.0 Pie pre-installed, which was released in 2018. Google follows an annual upgrade schedule, so in 2020 Android will be again updated to Android 11.
There was a time when OS updates used to be feature-heavy releases, but these days most updates are relatively minor. Android 9 supports many of the same everyday apps and services that you’d expect from your smartphone. But it is worth considering if you feel like this would be an important factor to you, especially if you intend to keep the Fairphone 3 for around four years.
The Fairphone 2 supported two operating systems; Android and Fairphone OS, the company’s open-source Android platform. Android, as most of us know it, is heavily focused on Google services, with this software deeply embedded into the OS. However, Android is actually open-source software, allowing anyone to customize their own variations. Fairphone OS was designed to provide a Google-free Android experience for the Fairphone 2.
Unfortunately, Fairphone OS is not currently available for the Fairphone 3, although it may be an option in the future. That the company is committed to a Google-free Android experience is evidence of their ethical stance. Google, as the world’s largest ad-provider, comes with many ethical and privacy-related problems. Generally speaking, those who care about repairability, ethical consumerism, and environmental impact are likely to embrace ways to minimize Google’s presence in their lives.
Fairphone 3 Performance
While ethics and environmentalism are crucial considerations, so, too, is the performance of the Fairphone 3. After all, you wouldn’t want to be lumbered with a sub-par device for the next few years. Fortunately, that won’t be the case if you opt for this smartphone.
As is to be expected for a phone at this price point, you won’t get flagship-level performance. However, unless you produce professional video or photo content with your smartphone, or hope to play the latest mobile games, the Fairphone 3 will be more than enough for most other uses.
Compared to similarly priced alternatives, the camera is lacking. In theory, the Fairphone 3 has a similar sensor to the Google Pixel 3a. However, it is the power of Google’s software that polishes average snaps into something worthy of your favorite social network. There’s nothing wrong with the Fairphone 3 camera, but it’s not spectacular either. This will become more evident over the phone’s lifetime, too.
If you’re transitioning from a flagship device from the past few years, the Fairphone 3 will feel slow. There is a slight lag when opening or switching between applications. It’s not enough to be annoying, but you’ll notice it all the same.
That said, the point of the Fairphone 3 isn’t necessarily to make the highest-performing device; it’s about rethinking how we approach electronics. Although it would be easy to dismiss the phone when comparing it against other recently-released smartphones, that would be to miss the Fairphone’s difference. This isn’t an excuse, either, but is the reality of choosing an ethical smartphone.
Fairphone 3 Battery Life
Given the specifications of this phone, I wasn’t expecting much when it came to battery life, either. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it lasted about a week in standby—powered on, with apps running in the background, but no regular use—and easily made it through a day’s worth of regular use. The Fairphone 3 doesn’t come with a charger in the box.
As the phone uses the now-common USB-C charging port, it’s likely you already have a suitable charger. If not, they are easily found in most retailers. This decision reduces the amount of e-waste generated by the Fairphone 3. Most of us also carry portable chargers around, too, reducing the need for a wall socket charger. As you can easily access and remove the battery, you could also keep a charged spare with you to swap out as needed.
Ethical Considerations
Apple, generally regarded as the most principled of all the large tech companies, uses a company called Foxconn to manufacture their iPhones. Since 2010, there have been ongoing worker welfare issues in these factories, and in some cases, becoming a contributing factor in several suicides.
Apple is certainly not alone, of course: Doro, Google, HMD Global (Nokia), HTC, Samsung, Sony, TCL, and ZTE have all received Ethical Consumer’s worst rating for supply chain management. In the same rankings, Fairphone was the only company to be awarded the best rating.
It’s a similar story for toxic chemical management. However, in this category, Fairphone received the worst rating as they failed to provide relevant information to Ethical Consumer. Their last known award, in 2016, was a middle rating. The fact that Fairphone, a company striving to produce the most ethical and environmentally-friendly devices, achieved merely a middle rating, shows how complex this area is.
In the EU alone, there are over 211 million new smartphones sold each year. In a 2019 Coolproducts study, it was estimated that Europe’s phones had an annual climate impact of 14.12 million tonnes of CO2, with 72 percent of that attributable to production and disposal. That tremendous impact is fueled by the tech industry, who market the slightest improvements as revolutionary, must-have new features.
The Fairphone 3’s Ethical Credentials
The Fairphone is a reaction against that industry. It is an alternative for those who don’t want to give up smartphones, but take issue with the way manufacturers run roughshod over the planet. The phone is easily repairable—there’s even a screwdriver included in the box—and if the past two Fairphones are an indication, it will be supported for years to come. That’s not to say that this is a 100 percent ethical and environmental phone.
Given the complexity of modern manufacturing, it would be unrealistic to expect this phone to achieve all of those goals. However, the past seven years have seen the company steadily improve their credentials and make significant inroads towards a better future. It’s also important to remember this isn’t a zero-sum game; some progress is better than none at all.
For example, the company found they weren’t able to identify the source of the gold used by many components manufacturers. Instead of abandoning their position, they now buy “fairtrade” gold and sell it on exchanges to compensate for the lack of traceability, acting almost like a carbon offset, but for gold.
Should You Buy the Fairphone 3?
Ultimately, the Fairphone 3 is a decent phone. But it’s the company’s ethical and environmental credentials which are its key selling points. It’s not an easy phone to compare against the competition, either. It lacks some of the specifications of the latest phones and even runs an older variant of Android.
However, it is easily the most repairable phone around, with iFixit rating it a perfect 10 out of 10. Fairphone’s commitment towards fairer worker rights, improved supply chain management, reduction of electronic waste, product longevity, and carbon impact are a significant part of the reason you’d buy the Fairphone 3. It may not be the fanciest phone around, but it doesn’t need to be.
This is a phone you’ll be able to keep for years, and can even repair yourself. As awareness grows of the impact humans have on the planet, the best choice you can make is obvious; the Fairphone 3.

How to Increase Clicks by Mastering Your Headlines
What draws people to your content?
In the past, I’ve explained how to write introductions that make the rest of your post irresistible. But before readers can even have a chance to read your intros, they’ll need to click on your headline.
Headlines go way beyond just blog posts. This is something you need to focus on for every piece of content you produce.
Whether it’s a new video on your website or a breaking news story you’re sharing via social media, it all starts with a captivating headline.
Obviously, you want people to consume the content you’re producing. But the reality is they probably won’t. According to research from HubSpot, 43% of readers just skim through posts.
But if your goal is to get clicks and drive traffic to a landing page, all you need to do is focus on the title.
That’s because 80% of people will read a headline. So there’s a good chance your headlines will be seen by most of your audience. Now, it’s just up to you to make sure it’s appealing enough to get clicks.
Include a number
Numbers are a great way to draw attention to your post and increase clicks. That’s because readers know what to expect when they see a number in the title.
I use them when I’m writing my blog posts all the time. Here’s a recent headline I used for an article about how to monitor your competition.
When someone stumbles upon this headline, they know exactly what the post will entail. Basically, it’s going to be a list of 10 different tools.
As I mentioned, readers like to skim through content. Lists are appealing because they make it easy to bounce from one point to another.
The reader doesn’t have to read every single word to scan through this list. As a result, they are more likely to click on it.
But what numbers should you use? According to research-based 2017 Facebook engagement data, these are the top ten performing numbers:
10
5
15
7
20
6
8
12
9
3
Numbers that are increments of five make up four of the top five results on this list.
But that doesn’t mean you should include numbers like 50 or 100. As you can see, none of the top ten results include numbers higher than 20.
That’s because people don’t want to spend all day reading your content. They know it will take only a few minutes or so to skim through a list of 10. But anything upward of 20 is much less appealing and won’t produce as many clicks.
Don’t overlook the length
Don’t ramble. Your headline shouldn’t be as long as an introduction. But it shouldn’t be only a few words either.
One sentence or fragment of a sentence should put you in a good spot to get clicks. That’s because it provides your audience with enough information to grab their attention.
Research shows that headlines between 16 and 18 words produce the most engagement:
Analyze your current headlines.
If they are fewer than ten words, it could be the main reason why you’re getting an unsatisfactory number of clicks. On the flip side, if your headlines have a word count that’s pushing 30, it’s still not optimized for the highest engagement.
Don’t get carried away here. Your headline needs to make sense and read well.
Adding or removing a couple of words just to fit within the 16 to 18 range isn’t going to help you if the title doesn’t make any sense.
In addition to your word count, you should also consider the number of characters in your headline.
Take a look at the data analysis in this article from Contently:
As you can see from the graph, headlines with the highest click-through rates have between 90 and 99 characters.
Interestingly enough, the title of this post is,
According to a study, There’s a Good Chance You’ll Click This Headline Because It’s 97 Characters.
The character count falls within the recommendations of the research.
Have you noticed anything else about this title? I’m sure you’re not in the habit of counting words. Truthfully, I’m not either. But for the sake of this post, I’ve been paying more attention to this.
The article from Contently has 16 words in the title. This aligns with the research on word count and its relationship to engagement I talked about earlier.
It hits the mark for both categories.
Basically, if you can write headlines that are between 16 to 18 words and have 90 to 99 characters, you’ll be putting yourself in the best position to get the most possible clicks.
Shock your audience
Come up with a headline that is too intriguing for readers to pass up on.
Make your audience ask themselves “huh?” or “is this even possible?”
Shocking headlines are sometimes referred to as click-bait. It’s okay to do it as long as you are not letting your readers down with your content.
Here’s what I mean by this. If you are going to use a shocking headline, the content had better deliver as promised.
Take a look at this old blog post I wrote about how I made $1 million with a Ferrari:
What a throwback picture! I almost don’t recognize myself with all that hair.
But this is the type of article that generates clicks because the headline is so shocking. It draws the attention of readers for several reasons.
First of all, a Ferrari is a well-known sports car recognized internationally. They are expensive and turn heads whenever they are seen on the road.
Second, I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t be interested in how to make a million bucks. And there’s a way to make money with a sports car? The title is too intriguing to ignore.
It makes the user question if that’s actually possible.
You can come up with headlines like this as well. Think of something exciting you’ve accomplished. Put it into your headline.
Set a benchmark
Another way to get people to click on your headlines is to use a benchmark.
Show them how they can achieve something by clicking on your post and reading more information. For example, let’s say your company sells dietary supplements.
A benchmark headline could say,
How you can lose 30 pounds in the next 30 days.
This strategy combines the benchmark method with the previous tactic of using a shock factor. Losing 30 pounds is extreme on its own. But doing it in 30 days? That’s something that even people who aren’t trying to lose weight would be interested in reading.
Just make sure your headlines are realistic. You want to set a benchmark that’s attainable.
Check out this example from my blog where I discuss how to get more Twitter followers:
The benchmark here is 10,000.
It’s a high number, but it’s still realistic. If the title said, “How to get 10 million Twitter followers,” it would be much less believable.
For most people, reaching 10 million followers on social media is unrealistic. I know my blog audience. I’m speaking to entrepreneurs and business owners, not celebrities.
I set this benchmark at a number I think they can reach.
Discuss relevant topics
Your headlines need to be relevant to a few different things.
First of all, they need to be appropriate for your brand and voice. If your business is in the music industry, you shouldn’t be writing headlines about how to survive an earthquake.
Yes, that example may be a bit drastic, but I’m sure you understand what I’m talking about.
Second, your headlines must be relevant in terms of their timing. If you’re reporting a news story that happened two weeks ago, you’re too late. That headline is meaningless now.
Here’s a great example of a relevant headline from Harper’s BAZAAR:
As a magazine that specializes in fashion trends, pop culture, and beauty advice, it uses a headline on topic for the brand. It hits the mark for our first component of relevance.
This article discusses fashion trends for the spring and summer of 2018.
But notice when it was published. The article was released on February 22, 2018. So the timing is perfect as well.
If it came out in the spring or summer, it would be too late. Readers aren’t going to click on something that’s old news. The time to buy their spring and summer clothing is before the season starts.
Teach your readers “how to” do something
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know I’m a big fan of creating informative guides teaching you how to do certain things.
If you are an expert in a particular field or industry, use your extensive knowledge to your advantage. Create step-by-step guides for your readers.
In addition to being informative, such posts are also a great way to get lots of clicks.
Here’s something else you need to take into consideration. Sure, you’ll be sharing your content on all your distribution channels. But that’s not the only way your content will be seen.
You’ll also need to write headlines based on organic traffic. Your organic traffic comes from unpaid search engine results.
If someone needs help accomplishing something, what do you think they’ll type into Google? There’s a good chance they’ll type the words “how to,” so it’s in your best interest to include these words in your headlines for SEO purposes.
Take a look at this article from BuildFire:
First of all, the content of this article is relevant to the brand—a topic I discussed above.
But based on this headline, it’s clear the post will show people how to do something.
BuildFire specializes in everything related to mobile applications. More specifically, they handle custom app development.
So they recognized the search terms someone would put into Google. Here’s a look at what I’m referring to:
Aside from a paid advertisement, this post from BuildFire is the top search result based on its headline.
If you can master your SEO skills, you’ll get plenty of clicks just by occupying the top position on Google. In fact, in 2017 the top position received 20.5% of all Google clicks.
Those click-through rates drop down to 13% for the second and third positions, which is still good but a significant drop from the top spot’s rate.
As you’ve seen from a few of my examples in this guide, I practice what I preach. Look again at the title of the post you’re reading right now. I’m teaching you “how to” do something, and my headline reflects that.
Conclusion
If you want people to read your content, you need to entice them to click on your headline before you can do anything else.
If you are just trying to drive more traffic to specific pages, writing an engaging headline is the best way to do this.
Writing a headline shouldn’t be taken lightly. There is science behind it.
Add a number. Readers love to scan content, so a numbered list with fewer than 20 topics is one of my favorite ways to generate clicks.
As you can see from the research I discussed, the length of your headlines is important as well. You need to consider both the word and character count to make your title as efficient as possible.
Use a shocking headline to wow your audience and generate clicks. Set an attainable benchmark. Just make sure all your content is relevant and released at appropriate times based on titles.
“How to” articles also produce lots of clicks. Your SEO skills should be applied to every headline you write to increase your organic traffic.
If you follow this guide, you’ll see a significant surge in your click-through rates based on your new and improved headlines.
What types of headlines do you write that encourage readers to click on your content?

SEO in 2017: Proven Content Ideas That Attract Backlinks
SEO in 2017: Proven Content Ideas That Attract Backlinks
In this guest post, Glen Allsopp explores SEO in 2017, offering up in-depth content strategy ideas to help you attract backlinks to your site.
Pat FlynnMarch 27, 2017
This is a guest post from Glen Allsopp from Gaps.com, who (fun fact) was featured in SPI Podcast Session #3 from over six years ago! He was one of the first in the world of SEO to really inspire me back in the day, and someone, although quite a bit younger than me, I very much look up to.
He’s been diving even more into the world of SEO since 2010, which is why I wanted him to share a guest post about what’s working today.
I’ve been actively involved in the SEO world for eleven years now, and if there’s one thing that has kept me so interested in the topic it’s the ever-changing landscape of what works, right now.
Since I was sixteen years old, I’ve been writing articles on what Google looks for when ranking websites. Back then I would talk about things like constantly adding content so your website appears “fresh,” how many times your target keyword should be on a page, and making sure all of your URLs had keywords in them, like this: terms-you-want-to-rank-for.html.
Easy to use CMSs (content management systems) like WordPress were not really a thing at that time so most changes people recommended for your site—like your URL structure—had to be done by manually editing files on your server.
While I prefer how much easier technical changes are these days, I do miss one thing from the past: picking up backlinks was so much easier.
We didn’t have the ‘nofollow’ attribute so people could devalue the links they were giving out. People actually linked out to articles they enjoyed reading rather than sending a tweet or giving a Facebook like. You could write articles for other sites without people thinking you were doing it just to manipulate Google rankings. And when blogging did start becoming a thing, we would use something called “pingbacks” to let people know we linked out to them, with the favor often returned.
That was a long time ago, so instead of reminiscing on the past, it’s wiser to think about the future.
Ranking in 2017 and Beyond
You could rightly say that the only constant in SEO is change, but almost all of us who try to improve the rankings of our website in Google would agree that links have always played a big part in their algorithm and will likely do so for a long time to come.
For those of you new to SEO, that’s simply getting people from websites that are relevant to yours to link back to you. Google follows these links, and it’s how they get a picture of the web.
In a recent round-up interview with some well-known SEO experts, they all unanimously stated that links will continue to be a big factor in 2017 as well.
Dan Sharp, creator of the popular Screaming Frog Spider, said, “I believe links will continue to play an important role in scoring in the longer-term.”
Dan Shure, a popular SEO podcaster, said, “Links will in my opinion always play an important role in rankings.”
With the premise that links are still hugely important in mind, the questions I want to tackle in today’s article are these: Are links really harder to get than ever before? If so, how do you go about building them?
I’ve spent a lot of time covering legitimate forms of link building (known as “whitehat”) like earning links naturally and also the more “greyhat” side of things like utilizing private link networks and creating private communities who link to each other.
Today, I only want to focus on one form of link building, and that’s writing content which entices others to link out to you. In other words, earning links by offering value.
In December 2016 I launched a new blog sharing online business opportunities with my audience. I hoped they would react well to my new focus—away from constantly writing about SEO. The results were far better than I expected.
In its first full month online (January 2017), the site attracted more than 140,000 unique visitors, which I couldn’t be more happy about. Visitors found Gaps via my email list, Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, where I was the number one story for the day in the “Entrepreneur” subReddit.
There is just one noticeable downside to reaching so many people that wouldn’t have happened in the past: I wasn’t picking up any links.
Some of the articles I’ve written on Gaps would have picked up hundreds of links in years gone by, but today the links that trickle in are those from social aggregators like Inbound.org or Growthhackers which link out to dozens of other sites on a daily basis. I haven’t picked up any of the powerful links I would have done previously from some of the biggest names in marketing.
I’m not writing this to complain. Not at all. But if links to content are harder to get than before, does any content still attract links?
Do People Really Link Out Less Than Before?
It’s easy to say something like, “People are more likely to tweet than give a link,” but I would rather not make any claims without backing up what I say with real numbers.
Link building certainly isn’t dead. I did pick up a few links from forums where people talked about my articles and someone even wrote about how much money I spent on my domain name. But is it fair to say that sites which regularly pick up links struggle to get them in the same numbers as before?
The first site I want to inspect is the blog of Seth Godin. The site hasn’t changed much over the years—he writes short blog posts, frequently—so it should be a good indicator of how our linking habits have evolved.
While Seth has a presence on both Twitter and Facebook which he couldn’t have had in the past, he is not behind either accounts. There is nothing personal about them. They just share links to his latest blog posts.
Here are the number of referring domains (unique sites) that have linked to Seth’s most popular blog posts which were published in their respective year.
We can see that the three years from 2008 to 2010 were very good for Seth in terms of attracting links. We can also see there is a clear decline in how many unique sites link to his articles over the past few years.
Moving on, the next site I wanted to look at is Nerd Fitness from my good friend Steve Kamb. Steve receives hundreds of thousands of visitors to his site each month and while he hasn’t been around for as long as Seth, we still have seven years of data to look at.
Although the trendline would have looked very different if he hadn’t written such a killer post in 2010 (The Beginner’s Guide to the Paleo Diet), it’s clear that in 2015 and 2016 his most-linked-to articles simply didn’t attract links like before.
When I started my personal development blog back in 2009, one of the sites that was growing quickly was called The Art of Manliness. Digg, a site similar to Reddit (which Reddit later overtook in traffic), could easily send 30,000-50,000 visitors to a website, and The Art of Manliness was regularly featured on their homepage. They’ve amassed over one million likes on Facebook so the brand is still going strong, but what about their backlinks?
The decline here is much more horizontal, with recent articles still attracting links from hundreds of different domains. That’s a good sign for those of us worried about our link building future, so let’s see if there are any more sites on a similar role.
Tim Ferriss, author of The New York Times bestsellers like 4-Hour Body and 4-Hour Chef, also has a popular blog at FourHourWorkWeek.com. It’s great to see that the decline for Tim here is even less, meaning he’s still able to attract links to recent articles.
If there wasn’t such an anomaly with his results back in 2007, this would have been the most consistent chart yet.
And last but not least, I couldn’t write a guest post for SPI without looking at the data for Pat’s blog as well. I know Pat himself would be interested in this, so here we go.
With an absolutely killer post in 2008, with 454 domains linking to him, Pat really outdid his other content nine years ago. While the numbers are low in 2015 and 2016, they’re not too different from 2009, 2012, and 2013 where his best article received links from around 40 different websites.
As a side note, please accept that the figures above are never going to be 100 percent accurate. We don’t have direct access to Google so it’s impossible to say how many links they find for each site. I used Ahrefs for this data and it is widely regarded as the closest alternative we have.
One could argue that my data is flawed. The older posts have been around for longer which gives them more time to pick up links.
But we can also counter-argue that there are far more people online these days, and with social media, these featured websites are reaching a lot more readers who own websites and could link out to them.
What I care about more than how scientific my results are is the fact that great content still attracts links. So let’s look at what they’re writing about, and who’s linking out.
1,700 Linking Domains to a New Piece of Content
While sites seem to be receiving fewer links than before, they’re still receiving links.
Jon Cooper of Point Blank SEO recently tweeted a great example of an article that had gone viral in link building terms and amassed a large number of links for a relatively unsexy topic. The article was on the state of American consumer debt (I did say it wasn’t sexy) by the blog NerdWallet. Here’s how many links it received.
The rapid growth in the chart is a little deceptive—the article was written in 2015 and then the links were redirected elsewhere—but it has picked up links from places like The Atlantic, LifeHacker, Zillow, and Fool.com.
What should be interesting is not where they’re receiving links, but the context of those links. Let’s look at the actual sentences with the underlined text being where the link would be.
The biggest sources of debt? Housing education
According to NerdWallet’s 2015 American Household Credit Card Debt Study
Roughly 40 million Americans owe more than $1.2 trillion in combined student debt
The links don’t stand out. They’re more of an afterthought to a point that the author is trying to make. This is because the NerdWallet article is focused on data, so when the author from another site wants to make a point, they casually link to that data to back up their claims.
NerdWallet’s data comes from a large survey of their audience, which allows them to present the data in an attractive way each year that only they can produce.
What could you survey your own audience about which could create some interesting charts and numbers for other people to mention?
During a speech at HackerCon in 2015, the founder of NerdWallet stated that his team’s goal is to produce 500 content pieces each month with the aim of generating more links back to their site. They realized that SEO was the biggest driver of new visitors to their site, and certainly learned how to master it.
They’re not the only one who use surveys to good effect. SEO software company Moz.com has picked up thousands of links over the years to their annual industry surveys. It’s interesting they let a guest author share one for 2016, but it still resulted in a very popular post.
You don’t need thousands of people to take part to have value to offer. Some of the best data I’ve seen comes from surveys which only had around 100-300 people take part. And if you’re not design-inclined, you can use a tool like Survey Monkey to help you collect data and create charts.
Tim Ferriss’s Most Linked-To Blog Post of 2016
If Tim’s blog, The Four Hour Workweek, had not had such a well-linked-to post back in 2007, his link attraction chart would have been almost constant over the years.
Even in 2016 some of his articles are picking up hundreds of links from other websites. Of course, it helps that Tim already has a big audience, but he wrote a lot of articles in 2016 which didn’t entice people to link out to him. Tim’s most linked-to post of 2016, which picked up more links than his best articles in 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2015, was his interview with Seth Godin.
Seth Godin has done a lot of interviews with podcasters, but this one was pretty notable. Not only was it over two hours long but it covered Seth’s daily habits and disciplines, something a lot of people were genuinely interested in, especially when said individual has written over a dozen bestselling books.
It’s not the first time that interviews have helped people to get noticed. When Nathan Chan, owner of Foundr Magazine, was on the Smart Passive Income Podcast, he talked about how landing an exciting interview helped catapult his brand into the big time. He pushed for weeks and weeks to interview Richard Branson, and eventually, he got his wish. For a new business magazine trying to show credibility in a competitive market, landing a single interview with a big fish like Richard was enough to do just that.
Tim and Nathan both say they’ve regularly reached out to people for months and months before finally getting them to agree to be interviewed.
Is there a person in your industry who is notoriously difficult to get on a podcast? Or is there someone who has done interviews but hasn’t been asked questions you would love to know the answers to?
It will take a bit of work, and perhaps some outreach charm, but the results could most certainly be worth it.
The Classic List Post . . . With a Twist
If you’ve been using the Internet for more than a week you’ve likely come across a number of list posts popularized by the first bloggers and then taken to the extreme by sites like Upworthy and BuzzFeed.
Headlines like “11 Reasons to Eat Avocados” and “6 Quick Tips to Improve Your Snowboarding” are the kind of articles that healthy eaters and snowboarders are likely to click on to get their content fix.
As a marketing tactic, the list post idea has been done to death, but there is a twist that can keep them valuable, and that’s to make them both valuable and timeless.
Instead of whipping up another quick guide for pageviews, try to put something substantial together that people can benefit from for years to come.
The Art of Manliness did this with their guide, 100 Books Every Man Should Read, which has picked up over 4,500 links from 632 different websites. Even more impressive is it still picks up new backlinks every few days.
Another great example of this tactic in action is from The Simple Dollar, who wrote about 100 great tips for saving money.
The article was written just over a year ago and has managed to attract links from over 550 different websites. The key difference between list posts that attract links and those that don’t, seems to be substance. Not just throwing up a quick “7 days to do this” article, but really going into a topic in depth and sharing a lot of insights.
130 Links in the Last 30 Days: The Pat Flynn Approach
Since I’m writing for Pat’s blog today, I had to cover one of the tactics which has helped his website earn hundreds of thousands of backlinks.
The following post, which was written back in 2012 (!), still picked up over 100 new backlinks in the last 30 days. Tools like Ahrefs—used to analyze this data—aren’t only going to pick up great links, but there are definitely some in there.
As Pat has been known to do over the years, he created a step-by-step guide to a topic he knows his readers need help with. In this case, it was getting started with podcasting.
Pat put together a complete tutorial including the “5 things you should prepare before you begin recording.”
The reason articles like this continue to pick up links years after being published is because—just like the list posts which attract links—they’re timeless. Pat can link back to this guide any time he recommends podcasting as a marketing tactic as the overall information hasn’t changed. And if it has, he can update the post.
His guide has picked up links from the likes of:
Lifehacker
Problogger
ConversionXL
Mixergy
Buffer
Besides Lifehacker, these are some of the biggest brands in the marketing world and the exact type of place that any marketing blog would love to pick up links from.
I wrote a guide about WordPress SEO back in 2010 which still picks up links to this day. Steve’s Nerd Fitness has more links to his guide to the Paleo diet than anything else. Steve Pavlina has thousands of links to his articles on how to get traffic to a blog written over seven years ago.
So, ask yourself this question: What would your audience love for you to write a tutorial on? What could you write about now that you could reference in a year or two from now and people would still be interested in it?
Appeal to Your Readers’ Core
Around nine years ago I ran a personal development blog. The site was reaching approximately 100,000 visitors per month after the first year so it’s fair to say I had learned what people were interested in reading about.
Guest blogging for SEO was not something that was looked down upon back then so it’s something I actively did. I’m talking about writing for thirty different blogs in a single month. I didn’t just write for other blogs for links, of course. I hoped to write something valuable that their audience would enjoy and that would, hopefully, incentivize them to come on over to my own website to read more of my writing.
Once such guest post I wrote for a site named Dumb Little Man went viral. The view counter for the article passed 150,000 before they redesigned the site recently and reset all the statistics.
Here’s the headline I used:
I aimed to take people out of the mundane, typical web browsing and appeal to them on a core level.
I’m not the only one who has succeeded with this. Steve Kamb of Nerd Fitness recently wrote a post about why your heroes are flawed. It’s a headline that inspires you to learn more about what you’re reading and re-think what you currently believe in.
It’s no surprise then that it’s picking up links in 2017 faster than anything else he has written.
You can really take a different, more personal viewpoint on any topic and turn it into something that readers care about. We’ve already mentioned how successful Steve’s site was in picking up links about the Paleo Diet and his recommendations for it, but you can also turn the subject on its head and attract attention.
The Everywhereist was named as one Time Magazine’s top 25 bloggers, and this is their most linked to article.
As a final example for this strategy, I had to include an article I loved which went viral recently in the marketing and business world.
With over 16,000 likes on Medium, it’s the most popular article I’ve ever seen on the site. If you write something that a lot of people see, picking up links is almost always going to be a natural byproduct.
Can you write a headline that makes people jump out of the frame of what they would typically expect to read, and back up what you’re saying with great points?
If so, there could be a lot of links heading your way.
The Light Bulbs that Attracted 309 Backlinks
With any product on the market you can think of, people are going to be running comparisons. Which brand makes better cross-country running shoes: Nike or Under Armor?
What’s better, an LCD TV or Plasma TV? Is Ultra 4K really that much better than HD? It may be surprising to you that people are also interested in light bulb comparisons.
The Simple Dollar compared exactly that and had more than 309 links sent their way.
Another example of very niche comparisons comes from Bryan Harris who put together detailed reviews of some of the best email marketing services.
It’s not the type of content that’s going to go viral and have the planet talking about it, but it is the kind of thing that people who are unsure about which email marketing tool to use are going to read.
I have been with Aweber for nine years and followed Bryan’s updates like a hawk because I’ve been curious about what features I’m missing out on from companies that have been quicker to uptake new features.
Staying with the marketing world, Search Engine Land recently wrote a comparison between Google Home and Amazon Echo.
SEL picked up over 900 backlinks from 150 different websites with their comparison, including from sites like:
Techmeme
Reference.com
Street Fight Mag
That’s a lot of links for an article that was only written a few months ago.
The key to succeeding with this comparison model is to compare something very specific to your audience.
People outside of Internet marketing are not going to care about email marketing service reviews and people who don’t care much for being frugal aren’t going to read thousands of words about light bulb comparisons.
What would your audience be interested in seeing you compare?
Share a Journey
Toward the end of 2016 I came across an article from a man named Filipe who had challenged himself to wake up at 4:30 a.m. for twenty-one days.
The resulting article shared a number of interesting insights, and picked up links from big brands like:
MTV.com
Business Insider
Rappler
Today.com
It inspired me to start my own early-rising challenge and I even created a personal website to share my journey. It’s something that gathered a lot of interest from my audience.
Another public journey that was well received was the “12 Startups in 12 Months” challenge by a man named Peter who goes by the moniker Levels.
Just like Filipe, Peter also picked up backlinks from some huge brands like:
The Next Web
Hacker News
Startup Grind
PHPDeveloper.org
And, as you can see from the chart below, the links keep coming.
Is there a personal challenge that you could take on, relevant to your industry?? How about living on just $300 for a month? Or trying to lose 30 lbs? Or beating a personal record in the gym?
If anyone is on the same journey or just curious about how you’ll get on, you may find many links being sent your way.
The Item-Hype Formula: A Secret Template
The item-hype formula is simply the name I’ve attached to a style of headline I see that is both popular and effective at attracting links. The name of this headline style is actually derived from the headline itself.
Item is the subject you’re talking about and hype is the follow up which makes people want to read it.
For example, a post I referred to earlier, “WordPress SEO: The Only Guide You Need.” The start is the item—the topic I’m talking about—and the hype comes after the colon.
Other bloggers have successfully used this title, in cases such as:
Open Source Blogging: Feel Free to Steal My Content (1,000+ links)
Geek to Freak: How I Gained 34 lbs. of Muscle in 4 Weeks (1,000+ links)
Vibram Five Fingers: The Barefoot Alternative (600+ links)
Just think of the last headline in a little more detail to see how it grabs your attention. There’s an alternative to going barefoot? People actually walk around barefoot? The headline creates questions in my mind, and I want to read the post to get answers.
Start a headline with the core topic you want to write about, and then add some hype to what you’re saying.
This is better than the typical clickbait headlines you’ll see from BuzzFeed because you’re setting the tone of the topic upfront. If you don’t have the content to back up your awesome headline, then it’s pointless crafting such a good headline that gets clicks in the first place.
Your headline, first and foremost, is purely designed to get people to read the rest of your post. Even though they’re reading it, they still have to enjoy it if they’re going to share it.
If I’m going to write a post about WordPress SEO and call it “the only guide you need” then I can’t just give a few generic tips on the subject. I have to make it the best guide online.
The Best Advice I Can Give You on Your SEO Journey
I don’t mean that you need to assemble a team of people to work for you or even partner up on your projects. I simply mean that you should find people on the same journey as you so that you can help each other along the way.
Brian Clark of Copyblogger fame and Darren Rowse of Problogger linked to each other hundreds of times during their first few blogging years.
Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land and Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable did the same.
Jeremy Schoemaker and John Chow grew their blogs rapidly while promoting each other. It’s interesting to note that both blogs seemed to have died down in a similar manner.
JD Roth of Get Rich Slowly and Trent Hamm of The Simple Dollar grew massive audiences in sync and supported each other’s journey.
Pat started Smart Passive Income around 2009 and I started ViperChill as a marketing blog in 2010. For the first few years we chatted regularly, mentioned each other’s brands and learned what worked in growing an audience.
Ideally, you’re looking for three to four people who are already on the same journey as you. They’re trying to grow a brand in a similar field but you clearly aren’t competing for the exact same audience; or if you are, you’re not trying to sell the same products.
You won’t have much luck trying to convince people to build a site similar to yours or get involved in the same industry so you can promote each other. Even if you do, those people likely won’t stick around for very long. You’re looking to find people who have already proven that they’re self-drivers and have an inherent interest in the same subject as you.
If you’re active in your niche online, you’ll already know some of the up and comers in your space, or the big players who may be more approachable than you would expect.
The most obvious way to connect with these people would be to introduce yourself via email, but I wouldn’t do that to start with. Instead, I would start looking at how you can add value to that person by leaving comments, linking out to them, or suggesting improvements to their website.
Do it in a genuine way that shows you want to help rather than get something back.
Over time, these random moments of interaction can often lead to something more. You could always speed up the process by reaching out—after some prior value giving—and having a chat on Skype or even meeting up in person if possible.
Again, I recommend trying to connect with three to four other people on the same journey as you. In every niche there are always a few brands which get noticeably more traction and readers than everyone else.
With your new connections you can discuss and take part in things like:
What content worked that people shared
How promotions went in regards to product launches
Which traffic sources are bringing the most valuable readers
Linking to each other in relevant articles
Mentioning each other when being interviewed
They say two heads are better than one, and when it comes to link building and creating an online brand, I would totally agree.
There are so many facets to SEO that I have literally written hundreds of articles on the topic, but if you’re looking for content ideas that people are still shown to link to, the examples I’ve covered should help get you well on your way.
