Besides the obvious factors of income instability that have already been mentioned, I think another reason many Millennials and Gen-Z'ers don't donate to large non-profits is because we're inherrantly distrustful of big organizations — charitable and otherwise — because they're done nothing but screw us over for most of our lives. We also don't take what we're told at face value and don't automatically believe things just because they come from a "reputable company/charity", so we research things. We fact check. We look at Charity Watch to see what goes where. We all have everything we need to do so in the palm of our hands through our phones, after all. We get made fun of by Boomers and many Gen-X'ers for always having our noses in our phones, but it's because we actually use them for productive things in addition to keeping in touch with people.
My little sister and I have successfully gotten my family to stop donating to Salvation Army bell ringers and I tell as many people not to as I can during the holidays because fuck that selective morality bullshit. Help everybody or help no one.
Whenever anybody in my family travels we always hoard the mini soaps and shampoos from hotels because homeless/women's/LGBT/etc shelters LOVE receiving those as donations — they're easy and sanitary to hand out to individual people, which they can't do with normal sized bottles of hygene products due to health regulations. We all donate wrapping paper, bows, and tape to local charities that let parents in need pick out toys for their children at Christmas and wrap them. They told us they get tons of toy donations but people rarely think about wrapping supplies which they also need just as badly.
I go the route of a lot of Millennials with donating what I can afford to GoFundMes, Ko-Fis, Patreons, and other individual donation drives. I buy food bags at the grocery store at the holidays for the Tarrant County food bank. I donate to breast cancer funds at grocery stores during October so long as it's not Komen (fuck Susan G Komen to hell and back, seriously) because my middle sister died of breast cancer. The only "charity organizations" I auto-donate to every month are Human Rights Campaign, the ACLU, and Planned Parenthood. I also used to donate to the PetsMart charities when Sushi was still alive and I had to stop in for food and stuff for her. I always donated at the register, as did my Boomer parents. We're suckers for animals.

I have a real and true humanitarian perspective of how the United States is today. Last year I employed myself via my tax returns to help the East coast with "30 hurricanes" and I found myself knee deep in the core issues this country faces. I have filed cases with the ACLU in Texas and have more human rights cases to file in San Juan, New Mexico. I am shocked that this country as a whole has forgotten the basic principles our country was founded on and through time we have never ACTUALLY achieved our "mission" statement. We, as a country have been living a lie. And now, with Trump in the Presidential position it creates a deeper threat to every single citizen of the WORLD. I am clueless as to how a whole nation has been blinded for so long. I am a social scientist and I believe I have figured out how to fix our Nation, mend ties with other countries and put the whole world at rest. I can argue and prove my point and life from any and EVERY standpoint that is brought before me. I do not have a lot of education and I am in the bottom of our countries socio-economic ladder. I am classified as 'chronically homeless' and have given my life, every second of every day and then some in these past three years. I have been to various shelters in Arizona and Texas. I have been in the jail systems and ILLEGALLY detained in Texas and New Mexico. As a self-proclaimed social scientist I believe I have mapped out our past and our present. In doing such, I have also found a way where 'We the people' as a whole entity can save our Nation and the world from total collapse. I am all out of ideas and am exhausted from the emotional, psychological and overall stress of having a 30 year career in taking care of my brother, sisters, ancestors, Native Americans and African Americans. I need to finish my job that I have known for my whole life that I have had. I didn't really understand what my job is specifically until recently. But, the essence of the world, innocent children and animals has become overwhelming and I need help to understand it myself fully and help in conveying the message and truth to the masses. I feel that time is of the upmost importance and I have no idea on how to collect the 30 years of my life's journey which has manifested into a real true piece of humanitarian art work. The best type of art that I never believed was possible. I would like to help the "throw aways" of our American society as it is today. I have the best view of how to fix America and get each and every citizen the human rights that we are supposed to have, according to the United Nations. In not following the basic regulations of the United Nations, this country is currently in a very scary and serious time. We, as human rights activists have the obligation to get this information out. Our time is running out, for each and every human life in this world. My mission in this is not to be famous or have a face among the masses, I would love for everyone in America to BELIEVE in each other and the power a unified body can have. I want every single citizen to be elevated to true and ACTUAL freedom, without carrying a firearm. I can explain my life's work and prove it in 360 degree angle from every aspect of my life. I would love your help and plead for your attention in this matter; from a self proclaimed social scientist with a humanitarian eternal job. I have a deep, deep belief in everything and nothing at the same time. Looking back over the first month of the Trump administration, I fear that US democracy is headed in a dangerous new direction. The US is led by a man who shows little respect for democratic institutions and government accountability. Attacking the media… Insulting the courts… Fearmongering and lying to the public… We’ve seen this before, and we know where it can lead. We’ve seen how demagogues around the world undermine democracy by chipping away at checks and balances. For decades our researchers have exposed abuses by leaders intent on concentrating power for themselves. That’s why we need you with us. With your special gift, you’ll be helping to defend millions of people whose rights are under siege. Today’s difficult times shake the foundation of the work that we do, but they also reinforce its enormous importance. I feel privileged to spend my days working alongside dedicated colleagues to defend our shared rights values. But it’s even more heartening to see the backing of so many supporters and activists across the country — people just like you. Together we are part of a movement that — by virtue of our collective voice — has the capacity and responsibility to resist government abuse. Support us today and take a stand for our democratic values…speak out for what’s right…fight back. Trump’s policies pose profound threats to the dignity and rights of people in the US and around the world. Human Rights Watch is here to hold Trump to account, expose the truth, and defend the values of democracy and humanity that bind us all. Stand with us on the right side of history.
