"lust for life" works better thematically to me than "lust for power" because. ok the short answer is "lust for life" is stored in the same part of you as what you'd traditionally call lust, like, horniness, but "lust for power" is somewhere else. for a full explanation—

much of christian theology and philosophy, especially/including early-to-medieval christian theology (which is where the seven deadly sins comes from), is greek philosophy with a different hat on. (<-dramatic oversimplification but if it weren't we'd be here all day.) the specific idea im gonna talk about right now is Plato's theory of the structure of the soul*¹:

Logos (Greek logistikon)—your logic, reason, intellect. the "highest" and "most advanced" part that "rules over" the others. located in the head.

Thymos (Greek thumoeides)—your emotions, passions, spirit. located in the chest. could also be called the "heart".

Eros (Greek epithumetikon)—your gut carnal basal desires and needs. hungry sleepy horny itchy in pain. located in the belly.

when we studied this in my philosophy classes [boo hiss of course you were a philosophy minor in college] we usually called them the Head, Chest, and Belly, and i'll be calling them that here, which is why i bolded those words.

the seven deadly sins*² have at times been categorized by these parts of the soul.

the Head contains pride and envy (both are centered around your rational ideas of yourself and others)

the Chest contains wrath and sloth (sloth has kind of an interesting history as a Deadly Sin, short version is there have been times when it's more closely linked to depression than laziness which is why it's here)

the Belly contains greed, lust, and gluttony.

so, the Belly is where all of the hedonism is, all the indulgence for earthly passions. "lust for power" in my mind connects more strongly to pride, which, i guess you could Themes that with Luxu being the MoM's "mini me" in some ways, but if luxu's Themes ended up being closer to "lust for life" that would feel more true to me. i just think it's really interesting that they named such an important character lust and i'd be disappointed if they went with a rhetorical cop-out with "oh he inspires lust for power" etc. and avoided the "base, carnal desires" angle entirely!

DISCLAIMER: all of this is an objective factual description of what i have learned about these ideas. i don't think it's True, i don't think you should go acting on it, im not making any kind of moral point about it. like you neeed to understand the greeks (and christians) were capable of getting SO racist and misogynist about this. i just like thinking about Theams and Motifs and Symbolisms.

*¹funnily enough you can see the platonic structure of the soul in Kingdom Hearts—the idea that "heart" "body" and "mind"/"soul" are three different substances that can be extracted and divided from each other. this is because the ideas from Greek philosophy that found themselves in Christian philosophy have, thanks to Christian hegemony, trickled down through the ages to find themselves in mainstream American/Euro/English-speaking-centric fantasy genre tropes and media that uses those tropes!

*²fun fact, the seven deadly sins do not come from the bible—the last time i tried to find out their exact origins i ran into some trouble finding concrete sources, but at the very least they were introduced into christianity in like the triple digits AD

saw your spoiler-free review of y7, so cool you enjoyed the gameso much!! i was wondering if you could talk more about your thoughts on aoki specifically. he's kind of an underrated antagonist so it's always nice to hear the thoughts of players who enjoyed his character

I JUST SAW THIS but yes i loved aoki so much, i think he's definitely one of my favorite characters in the yakuza series. spoilers spoilers but i think the reason why i felt so connected to him is because even though he seems like some who has his life together and is someone who basically everyone loves, behind it all is just an insecure helpless kid who wants nothing more than to be seen. and it's really interesting to see how "fame" or more like, attention i guess? affects someone. the way he had people around him that cared for him and would support him but he threw it all way because he thought the only way to feel love is to be seen, to feel love is to be number one. i really do believe that the people who are the loudest and look down on others the most are some of the most scared people to exist. they're scared of someone seeing them that way so they do it first. and i think it scared aoki to see that ichiban TRULY cared for him. not his power not anything else, him. masato arakawa. the him from years ago that was still wheelchair bound, the "weaker" version of him. but in your last fight with him, when it's just ichiban and aoki fighting alone without all his bodyguards, you can see that he really hasn't changed. he thinks he's become so much stronger and developed this entirely new persona but in reality he's still the same aoki that ichiban had tended to. he hates being vulnerable and being seen in that light. that's also the reason why that particular fight is also one of my favorites in the entire franchise. just the entire contrast between ichiban and aoki, how much down to earth and sympathetic ichiban is and how much more trusting and loyal he is in comparison to aoki really sells it all. aoki really does just feel like a lost kid who lost his identity. doesn't know who he is doesnt have a grasp on himself.

and since i just finished kiwami, im gonna try to tie it in w nishiki, bc they are quite similar. to me the difference though would be that nishiki acted out of envy/jealousy of kiryu, meanwhile aoki just hated being disabled and "useless". which i personally prefer narratively bc it's a very internal fight aoki has with himself, not with anyone else. and THEN it can tie back to family, and how family will always see the real you and support the real you. no matter how weak. it's just too bad that aoki realized that a bit too late. but yes i really really love him

• also in his notebook are many many drafts of an annual birthday love letter he wants to give you, but he just NEEDS to make sure that it’s absolutely perfect and that he gets across that you are so so so so special and important to him <3

• keiji is So Good at keeping it a secret too, I think. he has everything under wraps. not in a way where he like pretends to forget ur bday, just in a way that leads u to believe he’s keeping bday plans low key and not planning a party. sneaky sneaky.

• he gets your preferred flavour of everything of course, and he assigns your friends different jobs so you don’t get suspicious about why he suddenly has to go and buy streamers or balloons. he wants it to be perfect.

• he really debates not telling Bokuto too far ahead because he fears his ability to accidentally let things slip, but he eventually realizes he needs help decorating and moving furniture around, and getting someone over requires working around schedules, so he enlists his help and Bokuto is over the moon that he’s in on the surprise because he ALSO wants things to be perfect for you :3

• the day of the party, when everyone is headed to the house to set up the cake and desserts and other last minute things, he makes sure to have you out of the house. date night baybeeeeee!!!

• he brings you to your favourite lunch spot, then you spend some time walking up and down the street and doing some window shopping, maybe you sit at a park for a bit with some ice cream… he enjoys the last little bit of alone time he’ll have with you on your birthday until the party’s over.

• makes sure to be very very very affectionate with you (well. as much as he can be in public) because he’ll be missing out on having you close while you’re mingling and having fun with your friends. he doesn’t mind one bit tho, because he loves seeing you happy and that’s top priority for him always.

Luster by Raven Leilani! I bought it bc it was on sale as a slightly damaged copy and I was having one of my periodic 'girl just read an acclaimed litfic. just do it' moments, and then I picked it off my shelf while locked in my room for some reason, and ended up devouring almost all of it then and there. sometimes... things which are acclaimed..... are good.

(i am not a litfic girlie. i read three literary novels this year and the other two went straight into the op-shop pile)
