Any songs on the tortured poets department or the anthology that remind you of Emilie agreste or any other ML character? (though I know Emilie’s your special interest) I feel like the albatross and I can do it with a broken heart remind me so much of Adrien, and I always love your Taylor swift lyric analysis posts.

EXCELLENT question considering taylor swift just released an emilie agreste album. (and you’re so right about the adrien songs i definitely thought so too.) there were 6 songs that stood out to me as emilie songs, the first being:

I Can Fix Him, No Really I Can

this one is. well. it’s obvious that emilie is into toxic men. i love the idea that when she first got entangled with gabe, he was just an absolute broke problematic punk bisexual disaster (we can't ignore the harriel evidence) who her parents hated sooooo bad. and like literally everybody was so right that he was bad news but emilie was so confident that she could fix him until she finally realized that she was fr dying and he was actually going to terrorize the world about it. oops.

I Can Do It With A Broken Heart

already mentioned as an adrien song (which it is) but emilie and adrien are admittedly very similar and this song hits on exactly why. it’s about having such a tight control on how you’re perceived by others, putting on a fake persona that can be idolized and adored by everyone no matter how you’re feeling inside. it’s about being SO good at your job that you can’t actually get out of it. accidentally mythologizing yourself. losing your grasp of what is performance vs authenticity. you get it

Clara Bow

OKAY THIS ONE MAKES ME CRAAAZY. okay okay okay. so SPEAKING of accidentally mythologizing yourself, the song clara bow hits on a lot of the same themes as icdiwabh but there's this added sense of inevitable circularity to it that just drives me insane. I especially think a lot about adrien almost inheriting his mother's space in the public eye - the way emilie's acting career and universal adoration paved the way for adrien to be famous from birth, the kind of fame that makes his life almost unlivable at times. the whole bridge articulates it beautifully, I think - "beauty is a beast that roars down on all fours/demanding more" and "it's hell on earth to be heavenly." the idea that the world demands beauty from emilie, and she gives and gives until her ambition eventually breaks her, and she passes the performance down to adrien. and he takes up the mantle. the future's bright, dazzling.

Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus

so again, we return to the alleged bisexual punk disaster youth of gabriel agreste😭 this song is mostly related to my personal way that I imagine gabe and emilie's early years lol. I imagine that one of the things that drew emilie to gabe initially was that he was so opposite of the way her british nobility family was, and she was trying to escape that life. but eventually, once the money and success got to him, he became someone exactly like the family she once ran from. and she became different too, in a way she always regretted. hence the "say that I loved you the way that you were." the part of this song that feels VERY emilie to me is the "I changed into goddesses, villains, and fools/changed plans and lovers and outfits and rules/all to outrun my desertion of you." I think that emilie is very malleable, easily adapting her personality and presentation to fit whoever she's trying to please at the moment. but she never plans to stick around for long.

I Hate It Here

this one makes me laugh bc "I'd say the 1830's but without all the racists😒" ABSOLUTELY feels like something emilie agreste would say😭 and feel like she cured racism. but as for the actual song, I see emilie as always tending toward escapism. no matter how content she's trying to be in her situation, she's always stitching together an escape plan in the back of her mind. she doesn't like being tied down. she's such a romantic, and constantly disappointed by reality. always planting secret gardens in her mind

The Bolter

THE BOLTER!!!!! IS THE EMILIE AGRESTE SONG OF ALL TIME. TO ME. okay okay every single line but especially verse 2. "he was a cad, wanted her bad/just like any good trophy hunter/and she liked the way it tastes" just SAY gabriel and emilie. just say it. also the "splendidly selfish, charmingly helpless" SCREAMS emilie to me. one of the first things that ever came to me about emilie was her being flighty and kind of unreliable, as well as deeply attention seeking. I think of her as someone who gets restless if she's in the same place for too long, who has trouble with commitment. it's easy for her to feel trapped, and her impulse is always to break free. thinking about how content she was to leave behind her loved ones, "there's an escape in escaping" really defines her character to me. and of course it bleeds into adrien's struggle with confinement and tendency to run away when he's feeling unwanted etc etc <3

Ok so about Johan why did he exactly kill the fortners?I understand why he left her at the fortners but then why did he come back after 9 years and kills them and hhen he wants to see her? Like what was his plan exactly

The tragedy of being one

This is the tragedy of twins: Johan is obsessed with the idea of being Nina and Nina being him, a single being separated into two entities, but a single being nonetheless.

Shoot me. You are me and I am you.

What Johan wants for Nina is not for her sake, but for her to remain himself. Or more precisely, as her identity has been suppressed by her mother, to be Nina.

Johan isn't angry with Tenma for saving him, but he knows that by saving the monster, Tenma himself has prevented Nina from finding happiness.

You saved my life 9 years ago. Have you already forgotten about the twins?

There's something that I find is often overlooked in the analysis of the beginning, and which will be of vital importance later on. Tenma had to answer a dilemma, save the mayor or save a little boy, but in reality, another silent dilemma arose immediately afterwards, save Johan or save Nina? Because in reality, throughout the work, Tenma is trying to make up for his mistake, not just saving Johan, and therefore killing him as Nina had aspired to do, but also saving Nina whom he had condemned. 

Who was she trying to save ? Me ? Or my sister? Which of us ?

It's clear from the beginning that as long as Johan is close and alive, even in a comatose state, Nina is no more. The little girl in hospital needs to heal, just like her brother. The climax of all this comes when Johan ‘wakes up’ and Nina faints. They can no longer be two, they are condemned to be one. 

It's towards the end that we realise that this dilemma has conditioned the twins' existence: who between Johan and Nina? Tenma will have to answer the question. If he doesn't kill Johan, it's not just because he's afraid to kill, it's because he doesn't know how to answer it.

If Johan had actually been killed by Nina that night, Nina would finally have been happy, because the monster would no longer be there. Above all, death was the only way for Johan to be "happy", because Nina is him, and if she is happy, he would have been happy. But if he lives, he's not cut out for happiness. And because Nina is him, she can't hope for happiness and a loving family.

Johan contacts Nina as Prince Charming on his white horse who will cover Nina with flowers. It sounded weirdly romantic, but in reality the symbolism is something else. In the apocalypse, Death is a white knight. And the flowers only evoke those placed on graves for mourners. Johan wants to cover Nina in flowers. Or lose his loved ones.

Don't tell me you think Prince Charming on his white knight is going to come and get you ?

For Johan, attacking the Fortners was inevitable. The name alone is a problem : Fortner. People who gave Nina a name. A name that she's not supposed to have. Giving herself an identity is what sets Johan apart. And he won't allow it. To return, he has to empty this identity.

It is for this symbolic reason that Nina suffers from amnesia. Obviously because she's traumatised. But also because the more she embraces Nina, the less she is Johan, so the more her memories of him crumble.

That's why, automatically, when Johan kills the Fortners, Nina remembers having killed him. Suddenly faced with death (the white knight) and loneliness (smother with flowers), Nina remembers the existence of her twin, Johan.

I killed him.

Why did Johan wait so long ? I think we still need to answer this from a philosophical point of view. Johan wanted to see Nina again. She is him, he is her, she is the only being that matters. But the Fortners were just in the way.

Are they really on their way when they didn't really know about this meeting? They have in themselves interfered by giving Nina a name. Johan is nevertheless concerned about Nina's happiness because I think he really tried to give her access to a form of healing and peace. He wanted to die so that she could be happy without the monster inside him. Then, when she rejected him in hospital, he let her live without him.

I'd also like to point out that Johan changed his motivation after recovering some of his memories. Which will in fact be Anna's. By reading the story about the nameless monster. Before that, I think Johan's amnesia gave him a kind of block. And he himself was afraid of what he described as a monster. Who was actually Bonaparte visiting them at the Liebert house.

Johan could never trust adults so he didn't trust the Fortners any more.

You'll run away so the monster doesn't catch you.

I think Johan's conclusion was that the only person he could trust was Doctor Tenma. So he left it to him to explore a past that he wanted to keep forgotten. I think he really did entrust Nina to him at the castle. Because Johan was there! He shot the henchman who was going to kidnap Nina. He was there when Nina met Tenma.

Why didn't he show up? Because he realised that Nina wasn't ready. Because she fainted when she saw him. She couldn't see Johan, the reflection of a past she didn't have the key to.

He killed the Fortners on Nina's birthday. A random date set for a nameless orphan with no history. Johan came to give meaning to this birthday. The day of Anna's rebirth.

And Johan's rebirth. Everything he did, he did for himself too. He has no name. Nina had to lose her family, she had to have a name without any substance. What are the Fortners without their parents? There is no longer a Fortner family.

The nameless monster simply ate his escaped second half.

One went east, the other west.

Then the monster who had gone west said to him. We don't need a name. You can be very happy without a name. Because we are the nameless monsters.

The little boy ate the monster from the west.

Your post regarding Johan and Anna being a yandere for one darling intrigued me so much and I just wanna know what you think would happen if, say, their darling prefers one twin over the other? For instance, the darling prefers Anna over Johan, and vice versa. I personally think that if the darling prefers Anna, then Johan would sorta emulate himself to be a bit more like his twin sister (and I imagine him having an identity crisis low-key 😭) — what are your thots?

my friend do you WANT him to break down??? His whole source of trauma is having their mother pick between them 😭😭😭. This would absolutely not end well for all parties involved. But I do understand the angst factor. Let's say darling prefers women, he may just have to pull the wig out (jk jk). If this was Pre-Rurenheim, he'd have no problems playing dress up for you. He doesn't have his own identity so he doesn't really care. You like Nina? Well you're just in luck now you'll have another her. They're the same person anyways. But if this was post monster I don't think he can subject himself to that same trauma again of living his whole life as his sister's alternate/being just one half of a person. If you prefer Johan on the other hand, I think Nina would be more understanding about it. Even if she was also yandere in this scenario. She thinks her brother deserves nicer things now (you). She doesn't mind taking a back seat for now since she was able to live a good life in fairness to him. She was actually able to have a nice foster family and some friends. So she'll support it. As long as you don't forget she's here too! Her brother can't have all the fun of course.

yandere ANNA on the other hand (i'm so sorry. if this is confusing ToT Nina and Anna are different. Anna is if nina was the "monster" instead of johan ), would feel slightly upset and jealous and might even find you picking between them redundant. She's practically the same as Johan or even better, what does he have that she doesn't? This is dumb. Either don't pick between them or pick her if you had to. Their mother obviously picked her to give away, they picked her to prod and experiment on, so why can't you pick her this time? Proceeds to guilt trip you. to summarize: picking favourites between yandere johan and nina? Therapy needed picking favourites between yandere johan and anna? World War 3.

See, what seems to be a million years ago, now, Anna's son brought home his roommate from college for Thanksgiving. He had told them all that Matt was different, whispered hushed through the phone, that he didn't come from anywhere nor have anywhere to return to, and that it had taken days of embarrassing pleading on his part to get Matt to even reluctantly agree to the visit. So Anna had said okay, honey, sounds good, and then she'd hung up the phone and worried with her husband as to what exactly it was that Foggy was bringing home with him. (What it was, was this: A kid, mop-haired and shy, mumbling please and thank you and offering to clean the dishes and jerking with surprise every time her husband clapped him on the shoulder.) (What it was, was this: Anna's third son.) She remembers Foggy telling her about Matt's--disappearance, the first time. She'd kept making an extra serving of dinner and dessert, just in case he returned, and eventually, he had. A bit quieter than before, a bit sadder, but whole. She doesn't remember Foggy telling her about Matt's second disappearance. Her own hands had been gritty with dust, or ash, or whatever it was they called it. She'd watched her husband crumble to pieces between her palms and then she had to open the front door to tell her son that his father was gone, only to find out that her other son was gone, too. And yet. And yet. Her husband is here again, and Matt is-- Matt is sitting at her kitchen table, socked feet tucked up beneath him, Foggy at one shoulder and Karen at the other, and he's saying please and thank you and offering to clean the dishes and it's like no time has passed at all, even though so much of it has. She passes her fingers through his hair as she sets their plates on the table. He doesn't flinch, not anymore. Instead, his body leans into the touch, and remains.

if we look at the race hair, it has two things, shorter hair is a lot softer while the curls seem more frizzy. Curly hair is often more hard to maintain and if you have curls like Paul then its always best to have curl specific shampoo and conditioner (which from my experience makes curly hair puffy especially if its longer)

I think he might not have had correct hair products or he doesn’t use correct one and uses regular one you can buy at a store just for race weekends (or he uses ones you get from hotels)

what also influences this is weather as he travels alot, curly hair has alot more texture and pulls in more humidity and dryness which makes it seem more frizzy.

its alot more different when it cones to off season hair, it seems like he has correct hair products and is taking more care (maybe even using hair masks) it can also be from feeling less stress that makes the hair seem more healthy

the frizzyness when it’s short is so 🥺 like in monaco and spa? very cute 🤭 oooo interesting about the haircare, i didn’t think about that…. yeah it would make sense for him not to have the right products (or not have the energy/time to properly tend to his hair) during race weekends, but the thought of him actually thinking about that and putting a lot of time into his hair when he's at home 😭

oh yeah i bet the weather affects it a lot too, and also just the racing in general? i suppose having a helmet rubbing down on it when it's all sweaty and the helmet is fuggy/stuffy is not great for the volume & curls either.... but the off-season hair, the puffiness!! the volume!! love how its sometimes very like individual, tiny curls and sometimes just a big flop of curl 🥺

i do have pets! my childhood dog (who lives with my mom rn) is a lab/shepherd mix who's name is zeus! he is afraid of literally everything, and has zero brain cells, lmao. he's eight so he's in his retired old-man couch potato era :)

my dad has a dog as well and she's a mini schnauzer named kyra! she is a menace (lovingly) and she's probably like three or younger so she has all of the energy and zero social skills (she barks at and scares away anything that steps into her yard). she has very specific routines and unfortunately is a class traitor (she makes my dad return to work after lunch for the routine :/)

i don't live with either of my parents rn so i don't really have any pets on my own :( i am moving this summer though and i'm hoping to get a dog in the next year or two once i see how school/work is timewise :)

my only preferences with the dog are that i wish them to be a rescue/shelter dog, middle ageish so they're potty trained and i have a good idea of what the energy/temperament needs of the dog are and if they match with my lifestyle, and that they're a medium-sized dog who is cool with a cuddle.

(also idk if worms count but i think composting would be neat and if i did it with worms i'd def count them as my pets, lmao)

exactly. THE worst. you're not escaping them. If we're talking Johan and Nina then at least it's like a good cop bad cop thing where Nina is at least trying to keep things at a level. The classical yin and yang balance. She genuinely wants you to enjoy their presence without any stress or discomfort while Johan could not care less if you're scared or not, since he knows you won't truly escape them anyways. He finds it amusing even— both on how visibly unnerved you are, and how much lengths Nina will go through to keep you in the dark of their obsession. He almost finds it like a game: how uncomfortable can he make you and how good of an excuse can Nina make this time? But if we're talking Johan and Anna, on the other hand, the Anna Liebert I have in my head (the one who's objectively WORSE than Johan): There is no pleasantries. Nada. They want you, they have you. That's it. They don't even bother to hide their freakishness (well maybe at the start, just to lure you in. They have to be on their best behaviour after all). But other than that, no chance at things being normal. Zero. You have two traumatized blonde twins touch starved for affection and connection and they will get exactly that from you. No matter how unsettling you find them. Not like you could do anything about it anyways.
