but yeah!! the editing is nothing too over the top and lighting in-game is doing most of the heavy lifting. don't sleep on what the game alone is capable of!! turn off those overhead lights and turn on a lamp or 2 😩

📩 Simblr question of the day: Do you have a process for making your simblr posts?

- an anon ask contribution for @simblr-question-of-the-day (Hi squat!)

I decided to do a separate post, just like what @changingplumbob did a question ago!

Since I mostly do story posts, here is my workflow:

a.) I draft the next story updates. Nothing serious, nothing deep. Just a rough draft that I want to happen. I have drafts in my laptop,

as well as in my phone [spoilers? lol]

Sometimes just one paragraph, or two, as long as I get the gist of it. This draft will be the basis when it comes to shooting the scenes.

b.) Before taking the scenes, I make sure that I have the poses and some specific clothes that I want and need. When it comes to clothing, it's rare that I use specific clothes on some scenes, because I have tons of CC in my mod folder, but I download it in advance. Some of it are already download in advance (that is not yet needed now, but is used far in the future)

b.1.) Sometimes, when I need a certain portrait of a character for a scene that is from a different save file, I make sure I do that first before I load the main save.

b.2.) When I need a certain build for the scenes, I have to build it myself. This is evident with the Strauds' nightclub and the Beau-Asvang's penthouse. It took me weeks to finish these. This is tedious for me, so some updates gets delayed, especially when I feel overwhelmed or bored.

c.) After that, I shoot the scenes. I base my scenes on the draft. This is another tedious part for me, especially if it involves a lot of characters. Sometimes, it has to be in a certain time of day. I don't mess time in that save, because I fear I'll mess up the calendar, so I rely in the fast forward function. The only thing that I mess with it is the weather. It can take me a whole IRL day, or a few days to finish this step.

d.) After taking the scenes, I choose which shots are the best, then delete the rest. I don't edit the photos because the reshade preset I use was made to skip editing it, but will only edit if necessary. No resizing is done (sorry if I'm lazy ;-;).

e.) In this step, the draft that was written before will be finalized once the scenes are done. Most of the time, the drafts get changed, because I change the parts of the story based on the scenes I took. The whole essence or message of the story doesn't change, only the flow and how I structured it will be modified. The finalized script is written in MS Word. A tip for everyone: type the tags you're going to use for the post in the document, so all you have to do is to copy the tags and paste it here in the text editor!

f.) Next, I'll upload the scenes and the script here in my Tumblr drafts. Sometimes, I break the scenes in separate posts, but sometimes I post it in one, depending on the story and the flow.

g.) Finally, I either: queue the posts, or I post it myself. I post the posts that has the "previous | next" links myself, because I want to quickly add the links as soon as I post it. I only queue on some posts, namely Beneath, and New Beginnings.

Again, this is my workflow when it comes to story posts! Gameplay posts like The Life of the Hatcher only get captioned based on the shots, and is not as heavily planned as the DLU (Davis Legacy Universe).

Part 2...two months late 😅 The funny thing is, these captions have been written since the end of April! I wish I had a better reason for the delay other than work, life, and lack of motivation, but unfortunately, I don't. I'm excited to share Part 3 with you soon! It's the last part of the foster mothers' episode, and if you read Part 1, you can probably guess what's going to happen in it.

Side note: when taking these screenshots, I bizarrely decided to test out a new Reshade to see if I liked it better. Unfortunately, I didn't, and it kind of messed up the vibe of the pictures. I had to do a lot of editing to get these pics looking as normal as possible, so if they look a bit different than my previous episodes, now you know why! In the future, everything should be back to normal. Sorry about that!

Evelyn: These animals are pretty—wait, is that llama looking at me?

Geeta Kaur (walking by and waving): Evelyn, hi!

Evelyn: Geeta?

Geeta: In the flesh! Lovely to meet you outside of emails and video chats. How are the teens doing?

Evelyn: Honestly? Pretty good! Didn’t expect them to adapt as well as they have.

Geeta: As for you and Audreyanna?

Evelyn: She’s good, too. Slightly frazzled. And me...well… (scoffs) Perimenopause, classroom politics, the usual. It’s nothing, really.

Geeta (concerned): Doesn’t sound like nothing.

Evelyn: I don’t want to take up too much of your time.

Geeta: Perish the thought. I’m practically prehistoric compared to these animals. My grandson has likely forgotten that I exist.

Evelyn: You sure?

Geeta: Of course! Social work has made me quite a good listener.

Evelyn: I almost feel embarrassed for even thinking about these things. But after two months with these kids, I expected...well, I don’t know what I expected. More? For them to need me?

Geeta: They do need you, Evelyn. Even more than to give them a place to lay their heads at night. Irving’s got his diagnosis, Wes is struggling to stay on the right path…

Evelyn: True, true, but they don’t like to talk to me about those things. I can barely get a word out of either of them. And take Chloe—the girl has every second of her day planned out. I’d love to talk to her as a woman, you know? Ask her about life, crushes, college. I don’t even know if any of them are going to prom!

Geeta: Hm, that is tricky. You can’t make them talk to you—you can only show that you’re a safe person for them to confide in. (looks down at her phone) Here—I have a forum that I recommend to all of my foster parents. Should have told you and Audreyanna about it ages ago. It’s a great place to find support when you need it.

I started a new run for Cyberpunk with Val in v2.01 and try to get my lighting, raytracing and ReShade back to what it was before, so I do many shots at the moment just to test things.

I summoned the "vigilante" ( I use a reskin from AMM because I don't like the open hood) and this happened. I (affectionately) call this car roach now. ( I tested raytracing on the car paint)

Val is having a breather in Reconsiliation Park. (I tested the fall of sunlight on surfaces and clothing and also a few ReShade filters)

I love when it rains in NC, but I need to tinker with the rain still to make it more visible in shots. (yes I know there's a mod, but I want to see how far I can get without it)

I was tinkering with sharpening tools and dof, to have the structures of the clothes in front sharp, but not e.g. the faces bc it looks "too much".

How much saturation is too much, mama Welles?

Increase the sharpness on faces without being unrealistic.

And since I'm bored ( I'm certainly not, my workload atm is horrible) I also started a Halloween fic at the start of October, which isn't finished yet, but I try to get it to y'all asap 😅

The bullets hit his body, but they just left faint scratches, nothing more, and when the guards realized that they couldn’t kill him, they tried to leg it but weren’t fast enough. Val made just one forced jump and landed on them. One of his hind legs on one of their backs. Val was now hungry for blood and bit the throat of the first one while crushing the other one's skull on the pavement. The blood made him rage. He finally turned into the monster that legends told about lycanthropes. It made him more powerful and dangerous. When he looked down on the one he had bitten, he felt nothing other than the urge to do it again.

So that's what I'm wasting my time with. (affectionate)

As a "virtual photographer" who has worked for EA as a promotional screenshot artist, your current shots will do nothing for you. If you do it for fun, you're fine, but these are not bringing anything to your table. And please for the love of god, don't pay for premium reshade presets, you're being ripped off. You can edit photos and shots for free e.g. with Photoshop, Lightroom or Photopea better than what reshade will ever be able to offer.

I don't pay for premium presets, I create my own. I pay for a couple of premium shaders to help me create better lighting. I have little to no interest in using Lightroom etc, I prefer to do it all in-game if I can, that's part of the hobby I enjoy.

I do take screenshots for fun, anon. That's the only reason I take them. I'm not looking to storm the art world with my egotistical brilliance. I'm having fun, enjoying myself, and some people seem to like the screenshots I take, which is an added bonus.

Should I decide to pursue a change of career I'll be sure to keep you on speed dial.

The only thing I've done differently recently is change my story pic size using srwe (and subsequently increase font size). Other than that, which was a few months back, I've done nothing different!! I do think the bigger crop makes things more crisp. Still using my favorite preset for stories and adjusting brightness/contrast/topaz in photoshop!

How do you take such beautiful game photos? I, for one, can't take a sim in the game photo in such a way that it looks good.

tbh i'm really lazy when it comes to taking photos now - i used to try really hard to fit a certain aesthetic (and failed every time) but now i just enjoy doing silly lil bright and colourful ones instead, because it's fun. I use a super light reshade preset (i actually play with it on 100% of the time, only if i'm taking a picture, sometimes i'll use dof too), and take all of my photos using GeForce Experience (basically does the same as SRWE, which for some reason doesnt work for me idk why lmao). Then I just open em up in photoshop, resize them, and use the gameplay actions from this set. basically im lazy and do nothing myself asdfghjklkjhgfghjk

It's easy, they said 😶

Changed the deck's ssd, and every step along the way was stressful enough I now have 5% more grey hair.

Stripped one of the screws. Guess my screwdriver sucked, but god is it hard to find clear instructions which size to use. (With the ifixit set, for me it was a PH1 for the backplate and a PH0 for the internal ones.)

Ordered a new set of bits, a screw remover set (which didn't end up working, but got it out with a tiny flathead instead), and a new set of screws. Together with the SSD, could have just bought the more expensive tier of the deck in the first place 😅

Prying the backplate off was stressful, omg. All the cracky noises. (Thanks to the ifixit video reminding me to remove the microSD, would have snapped it in half.)

"Just unplug the battery!" There was nothing "just" about it, googled, and wriggled, and pried, and wriggled some more, and scraped off some fingernail trying to get that damn connector out.

Meanwhile actually changing the ssd took like 1 minute.

Still haven't put the screws back in (wanted to see if everything works first). Might give it a few days and keep an eye on the thermals just in case.

I ended up buying an usb case for nvme ssds and cloned my drive. Didn't even need to install software, Linux does that with a single command. It worked perfectly fine, except that somehow, Steam has forgotten most of its settings, which really, small issue, but mildly hilarious. Yes, everything is still there, but here, have some beep sounds on menu navigation and all your emulated games forgot that they used to be in a collection.

Was it worth it? I think so.

I've owned the thing for 2 years now, so I am absolutely certain of two things: 1) it's worth the money and more b) 256 GB is too little space for me and sd cards won't be saving me.

The main reason why I wanted an upgrade is that one of my games performs terribly off the micro sd. It took several minutes to load into a map; quickly hopping in to kill a boss? Sorry, boss is dead now.

Unfortunately, that game is also 72+ GB and can't just be finished and uninstalled, so that's like 1/3 of the space permanently taken.

Also honestly, navigating two of each common and compatdata-folders for savegame hunting, mod installing or snoop-around-in-files-purposes is just a huge pain in the ass. I'm sure it works for those people who think changing a wallpaper is witchcraft, but I like mods/reshade and not every game I like supports cloud saves.
