Okay- so I’m totally disappointing you on this one. A while back I wrote Lost and Found which was based on the soulmate trope that when you lose something it winds up in your soulmate’s possession.

I had a couple requests for a sequel but didn’t know what to do with it. Until now. @noxsoulmate and @sanjuwrites helped my brainstorm one day and I got all the pieces figured out.

Unfortunately, I ran out of time and did not get any farther than numbering my first section. So there will not be a snippet of this one.

the superbowl vhs tape he brings her when she wakes up from her coma in one breath (and her deadpan "i knew there was a reason to live")

tickets for a football game to watch together in irresistible

bringing her flowers to the hospital in memento mori (he lies, saying he stole them from a guy with broken legs to make her laugh)

the birthday keychain in tempus fugit (and when she finds a meaning to it, he claims "i just thought it was a pretty cool keychain")

that is a man who is always thinking about her.

The Sightstealer Saga: Part 2

Ahhh, I just love royal tribute collectors, don't you? They cleaned up a few sightstealers that must have been loitering near the trading spot, which was very nice of them. The fewer sightstealers we have to deal with, the better!

Jut and Ivy seem to be getting along—I like to imagine they've bonded over their shared void-tentacle-parasites. Jut's ideas of appropriate conversation topics for eight-year-olds are... well, they're unique, for sure.

I also love his sombrero lmao

We are the Mechanitor's Message, and it seems like the best way for a pair of Mechanitors to fight a swarm of void monstrosities is to, y'know, summon mechs.

While a lot of sightstealers did wander into our killbox (and get completely obliterated for their efforts), there were still far too many of them for our liking. We did contemplate going out to meet them face-to-face, buuuut... in the end we decided it's safer to huddle in the safety of our walls and wait for the mechs to arrive.

Oh, and also Ludwig—the crash-landed fifteen-year-old from the last update—recovered and decided to leave. We ushered him out while the sightstealers were busy with the tribute collectors and the killbox, so he's not taking up resources anymore.

Next time on The Sightstealer Saga: can the hostile mechanoids defeat the sightstealers? Or will we be required to turn to... other places for help? *squints at the psychic ritual spot, the nociosphere, and the outposts*

The moon is a smoldering hole in the velvet night sky.

You watch it through the shattered window of this sinking house as it rises higher and higher. It arcs in the sky as your fever begins to arc inside of you.

Tao has the nerve to light a cigarette.

The spark in the darkness makes you wince.

"Really?!" You snap, sweat prickling on the back of your neck. Not even the chill from the night does anything to cool you.

"What?" Tao asks around it, the end burning red like the moon for a moment. You smell tobacco. "Not like we're going anywhere anytime soon."

You're both stuck in this wayward, dilapidated house on a job gone wrong. There is certainly something supernatural going on, but you've been here for hours now, endlessly searching for an answer or a way out, and have come up empty.

Worse than that, your heat is coming on early.

(In this unnerving house, with an unmated Alpha that you've despised since you've known her.

And the moon is making your temples throb, it's exasperating your cycle. The wind howls like a bad dog, rattling the shutters. You jolt.)

You're trembling all over.

You need to sit so you slide yourself down the wall and bring your knees to your chest. You try and draw in breath, but your chest is tight, and you're hot all over.

You sniffle.

In the dark, Tao moves. You smell vanilla and tobacco first, and then she's beside you, shoulder to your shoulder.

You can see her face better now, the sweat beginning to bead at her temples, and you realize she isn't quite as cool and collected as you thought.

You don't have it in you to put up a front.

"I'm scared, Tao." You get out, voice breaking.

She looks at you for a moment, eyes softening fractionally. Then she suddenly plants her hand on the top of your head and draws you to her shoulder. You tip into her with her guidance. And then you're sitting, your head on her shoulder. Her hand in your hair. She ruffles you a little and usually, it would irritate you, but all you can smell is wood sap and tonka. The smoke of her cigarette, suddenly familiar and comforting.

You feel her voice more than you hear it;

"I've got ya, kid."

renate lives in a world where dwarves only really get magic from the spirits of their ancestors -- people who did some amazing feat in the past and now are revered by their society. renate comes from a family that is directly descended from one of these ancestor spirits, renate (original flavor). she was named after her ancestor in some "look how great our daughter is going to be" way. so. pressure.

but she thrives under the pressure. she has an older brother -- age difference just small enough to live at home together for a little bit but large enough to not be close -- she watches him sail through life being Perfect at everything, effortlessly connecting with and getting magic from renate (original flavor), and she thinks "yes, this is achievable" and gets to it.

so she goes through her teens and into early adulthood determined to be the Best at Everything, and she is. except it doesn't come easy. she spends all her free time locked away in her room studying and practicing and pretending that she's not. she lies a lot to make it look easy, but she doesn't consider it lying, really -- it's aspirational. it's harmless. it's what she is in her head.

and then she gets to the point where she decides it's time to start reaching out to her ancestor, and spends hundreds of hours working on a LARGE intricate stone inscription (one of the only things she does that she actually really loves) lovingly depicting the history of her ancestor's greatest feat -- defeating an archfey goblin king that was terrorizing her people. and renate tries every. day. to connect to her ancestor. and every day she can't. and maybe she spends a little too long carefully carving the face of the archfey adversary -- it's only because if you revere a hero, if you believe what they did was remarkable, you have to believe in the power of their enemy.

so when renate connects to Something, she assumes it's her ancestor and runs to her community to celebrate. but the magic is just a little off. the color is just a little bit too sickeningly greenish alongside the copper of her brother's. not enough to really worry, but hey, she's only level one.

25. What’s your favorite decade? 

Well, I have some internal nostalgia for like. Objects? from the 90s? I miss how tactile everything used to be, VCRs and cassette tapes and clunky ass house phones and 8 trillion pound TVs you could beat on a little if they weren't getting signal right. But I don't really long for the social or political conditions of the past, I'm like. sort of banking on the hope that my favorite decade will be one of the future ones. I wanna see what happens, I just hope it ends up being good.

26. What are some seemingly childish things you like? 

apple juice boxes, animated series like Gravity Falls or Over the Garden Wall, talking in baby talk (usually to animals but also to myself lmfao), laying around thinking up anime AMVs. Idrk what I actually think is childish, but I know that a lot of times silly harmless things we like get classed that way, so yeah. stuff like this I guess lmfao. I love enjoying things.

27. What’s your favorite book? Or just one you’ve read a few times? 

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, by Stephen King, is one of my very most favorites, I think I've read that book like 15 times. the whole LOTR series, Inkheart, Faerie Wars, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. I'm reading Demons by Dostoyevsky rn which is really interesting. I used to read really avidly lmfao, but I feel like my brain has turned into cauliflower in recent years.
