“You should tell him.”
Emily sighs, briefly stopping herself from stirring her coffee, giving herself a moment before she turns back to look at her friend, “Pen, I’m not going to tell him.”
“But you told me.”
Emily throws the spoon she’d been using into the sink and holds her coffee between both her hands, the heat from the mug easier to feel than her frustration towards her friend.
“Yes, because you plied me with absinthe, which may as well be truth serum,” she grumbles, “The combination of you and alcohol can make me admit shit I literally wouldn’t admit under torture.”
Penelope, unbothered by Emily’s bad mood, carries on, “But peaches, you love Hotch-”
“Be quiet,” Emily says through her teeth, looking around to make sure they were still alone, the kitchen in the bullpen still mercifully empty, “We’re at work.”
She’d known it for years. The initial pull in her belly when he was missing after Foyet attacked him, something she had told herself was just concern at the time, morphing into something all-consuming. She’d feel her cheeks get warm whenever he stood too close to her. The smell of his cologne enough to make her lose her chain of thought, the heat that he seemed to have in excess rolling off of him and making her shiver if he so much as put his hand on her back to move past her on the jet.
If there was any part of her that thought it was just about sex she would have jumped him long ago. Let him fuck her against a door or wall, whatever the nearest surface was, to get it, him, out of her system. But it was more than that, it always had been.
She was in love with him. She loved his smile, its rarity making it all the more precious. She loved his dry sense of humour, how he’d use it to disarm the team to make them laugh when they needed it the most. She loved his presence, how she’d feel safe if he just so happened to be in a room.
And she loved how he loved people. The subtle way he looked after them all, and the not-so-subtle way he had saved her life.
In Paris, the feelings she had been able to push down burst into life. Everything that had once seemed to live in a grey area transformed into technicolour, settling into her very bones. Her love for him becoming such a part of her she knows she would never be able to stop. She told herself in Paris, those long, lonely days and nights stretching into an infinity, that if she made it back she’d tell him. That she’d take a gamble on the few moments she wondered if he loved her too. Hazy memories of him visiting her in the hospital, still in the suit from her funeral, that she’d half convinced herself were a dream, leading the charge. His hand tight around hers and his lips against her forehead as he promised her he’d catch Ian.
She didn’t want to do anything when she first got back home partially because she didn’t want him to think that it was out of some kind of gratitude. That he’d saved her life so she wanted to be with him because of it. But also because he deserved better than how she was when she first got home. A shadow of her former self.
By the time she felt ready for it, different than before but better than she had been, he introduced them to Beth. A woman who looked more like her than his ex-wife, and came without any of the complications than she would bring. So Emily did what she’d always done when she’d had her heart broken. She’d watched all the Star Wars movies in one weekend, cried more than she had in a long time and ate her weight in fries and ice cream. Then the next time she saw everyone she was ok again, content for her happy ending with Aaron to exist nowhere but in her fantasies that had never quite come to fruition.
Until a girl's night when she’d drunkenly admitted she was in love with him. Shocking Penelope but apparently not JJ, who claimed she had always known there was something there. Damage control hadn’t worked, and now Penelope brought it up often, sure that Aaron would feel the same way.
“Sorry,” Pen says, leaning in closer and lowering her voice, “I’m just saying-”
“Enough, Pen,” Emily says, sighing when she snaps a little more than she intended to, “It’s…not going to happen. He’s happy with Beth.”
“But he’s-”
“Please,” she pleads with her friend, her eyes flicking to the door to the bullpen as it opens, Aaron flashing her a smile as he walks in. She hates herself for the way her stomach flips, something that once excited her making her feel nauseous, “Please just leave it.”
Penelope sighs, watching as the sadness Emily clearly tries to fight floods her eyes, but she nods, knowing that for now, this wasn’t an argument she was going to win.
“Ok, fine,” Penelope says, reaching out and putting her hand on Emily’s arm, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok,” Emily says, smiling tightly at her friend, “I guess I just missed my chance.”
Penelope watches as she walks away, leaning against the kitchen counter, blowing out a steady breath as she spots Dave arriving for the day.
“Time to bring in the big guns,” she mutters to herself, an idea already forming in her head.
___
Emily groans as the looks at the clock, the time dragging on in a way that almost made her wish for a case. Her cell phone screen lights up, and Pen’s name along with a text message flashes up at her.
Can you do me a favour?”
Emily raises an eyebrow and types out her response. Favours for Penelope could range from the obscure to the barely legal, so she was hesitant to agree to anything without further detail.
What kind of favour?
The response is immediate as if Penelope had never put her phone down whilst she waited for a reply.
Can you get me some sticky notes from the supply closet? I’m all out.
Pretty please. I’ll owe you forever.
Emily sighs and shakes her head, already standing up as she replies.
You’re lucky I’m bored. The brightly coloured ones?
She smiles as she gets a response, slipping her phone into her back pocket once she’s read it.
You know me so well.
She’s distracted as she walks to the supply closet, not paying attention as she opens the door and then closes it behind her again, almost jumping out of her skin when she realises she’s not alone in the tiny room.
“Shit,” she exclaims, her hand over her heart as Aaron turns to face her, his eyes wide as she clearly surprises him too, “Sorry,” she says, clearing her throat, “I wasn’t expecting to see you in here.”
“It’s ok,” he replies, smiling at her, his dimples carved out into his cheeks as well as her heart, “Dave asked me to get some pens for him,” he says, holding up the box in his hand, “Although why he couldn’t get them himself is beyond me.”
She chuckles, “Well, I guess it’s always good to be kind to the elderly.”
Aaron laughs, the bright sound that made her heart swell in her chest, endless thoughts of what could have been enough to make her cry.
“I won’t tell him you said that,” he replies, “What are you here for?”
“Pen needed some sticky notes,” she says, reaching for a box of them from the shelf in between them, “Apparently we both have side gigs as assistants now.”
Any response is cut off by the lock on the door behind her clicking shut, and her eyes go wide, the trap that she had fallen into suddenly clear. She turns around and tries to pull at the door handle, sighing when it doesn’t open.
“Pen, open the door I know you’re out there.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Pen’s muffled voice says through the door, “It must be broken we’ll have to call facilities.”
Emily looks over her shoulder to look at Aaron, his eyebrows furrowed together in confusion and she looks back at the door, “I heard the lock click.”
“Funny,” Dave says, and she closes her eyes, leaning her forehead against the door as she realises Penelope wasn’t doing this alone, “I didn’t. Must be my age.” He quips, letting her know he’d been stood out there the whole time and heard their conversation so far.
“I swear to god, I will kill-”
“We’ll call facilities and get you out of there as soon as we can,” Penelope says, cutting her off before she can finish her threat, “You guys entertain yourself, talk.”
“Penelope,” She warns, but she can already hear footsteps receding, and she knows she and Aaron are alone. She blows out a breath and turns to look at him.
“What was that all about?” He asks, his eyebrows creasing together, and she sighs, running her hand through her hair.
As soon as she was out of here she was going to kill Penelope and Dave.
___
Aaron was in love with her.
He’d known it for years. The safety of her smile, her kindness, the place where he sought sanctuary more often than not. Using her as a sounding board when he needed it, drawn towards her because of more than her obvious beauty.
When he stood over a grave that he knew was empty, he told himself when he got her back, because he’d never been able to think in a world of ‘ifs’ as far as that was concerned, he’d tell her. He’d take a gamble that Dave had always told him was a sure one. His friend always keen to tell him how Emily looked at him when he wasn’t looking.
At first, he knew the timing wasn’t right. That she wasn’t herself, and he wondered if maybe Emily Prentiss had died that day in Boston. He still loved her and he knew he always would, but as time went on he felt more sure that their time had passed. That the closest he’d ever come to telling her how he felt was the kiss against her forehead in the hospital, apologies muttered against her skin.
Meeting Beth had been an accident. She was nice and pretty. Funny. And everything that any man would be lucky to find in a woman. At first, he’d turned down her obvious attempts at flirting, but then eventually he decided to give it a go. Any hopes of a fairy tale ending with Emily gone as soon as he overheard Penelope and JJ talking about Emily being in love with someone enough to convince him to let what had only been a few dates with Beth turn into something more.
“Aaron?”
He stops walking towards his office and turns back to Dave, his friend's use of his name pulling him out of his thoughts, “Yes?”
Dave smiles at him, something in his eyes glinting, “Would you mind doing me a favour?”
___
Emily swallows thickly as she places the sticky notes back down, her arms tight across her chest.
“I…”
She drifts off, unsure how she can get out of this without telling him what she had kept secret for so long, forced into admittance by well-meaning but interfering friends. She knew Penelope and Dave well enough to know that they wouldn’t let them out of here until they deemed the situation solved, or if there was an emergency of some kind. And whilst Emily wasn’t above wishing for a case, she thought there would be some sort of bad karma involved in actively hoping for a major incident.
Aaron frowns, concerned by her uncharacteristic quietness, all of the levity of their conversation before the door locked gone. He places the box of pens down and steps towards her, his hand on her arm. His concern only deepens when she pulls away like she’s been burned, folding further into herself in an attempt to put some space between them in the tiny closet they were in.
“Emily,” he says, his use of her first name purposeful, “You can tell me anything, you know that.”
She looks up at him from where she’d been staring at the floor and her eyes meet his. There’s nothing but understanding in his eyes, and something she daren’t call love.
“I’m worried it will change things,” she says, the words feeling heavy as they leave her chest. A vulnerability that she hated threatening to choke her.
“Well,” he says, stepping back to give her a tiny bit more space, respecting that it was what she needed, “That’s not possible, unless you’re about to tell me you were a spy for another government organisation,” he jokes, offering her a half smile, “In which case I’ll just be more impressed that you found time to do it all.”
She chokes on a laugh and shakes her head at him, “No it’s not…it’s not that, I promise.”
“Then tell me. You’ll feel better,” he says, wanting nothing more than to pull her into a hug, to offer her comfort he’s not sure she wants. She stares at him and blows out a breath, nodding before she looks back down at the floor, unable to look at him as she finally says it out loud.
“A couple of months ago I got drunk on a girl's night and admitted to Pen and JJ that I…that I have feelings for you,” she says quietly, hoping that by some miracle he won’t hear her, “And ever since then Pen has been trying to convince me that I should tell you. Which is why she’s locked us in here,” she keeps staring at the floor, tears gathering in her eyes at the continued silence, a confirmation she hadn’t needed that this was pointless, “I keep telling her that you’re with Beth-”
“I’m not with Beth,” he says, finally finding his voice.
She looks up so quickly her neck hurts, but she barely registers it, “What?”
Aaron clears his throat, the shock of Emily’s confession wearing off as the pieces fall into place. He realises that he was the guy that he overheard JJ and Penelope talking about weeks ago, and he shakes his head at himself.
“I broke up with her a couple of weeks ago,” he says, his hands in his pockets just to do something with them.
“Why didn’t you say something?” she asks, her heart beating so firmly in her chest that she’s sure he might be able to hear it.
“It’s not like it’s some big secret,” he replies, shrugging his shoulders, taking a small step towards her, “Garcia actually found out last night when she asked about my plans, I’m surprised she didn’t tell you.”
Emily chuckles humourlessly as she thinks about that morning, about her friend's seemingly newly revamped attempts to get her to admit to Aaron how she feels about him, and she shakes her head. She looks at him, her arms still across her chest as she tries to heave in a breath, her lungs seemingly full of nothing but him and his cologne because of how close he now was.
“Wh…why did you break up with her?” She asks, not entirely sure if she wanted to know the answer, sure that the hope that was sparking in her belly was nothing more than yet another thing she’d end up being burned by.
Aaron gathers himself, his chest tight with emotions he hadn’t felt since he was a teenager who was about to ask out Haley, the other great love of his life. He reaches out to touch Emily, tucking some hair behind her ear, and her breath catches in her throat, her eyes wide as they meet his.
“Because it didn’t seem fair on either one of us to stay with her when I was in love with someone else.”
His words hang heavily between them, the air thick with opportunity and what could be about to happen. She stares at him, her mouth open slightly as she licks at her lower lip, wetting it in a way she sees him watch.
“Aaron…”
“I thought…” he shakes his head at himself, “I don’t know what I thought. But I’ve always known you could do better than me.”
She frowns, her shock turning into outrage, “That’s not true,” she says, shaking her head fiercely, furious at him for thinking such a thing, “That’s not true,” she repeats. Everything that had happened in the last few minutes had thrown her for a loop, her entire body practically vibrating with things she didn’t understand, every nerve on edge as she came to terms with the conversation they were having. She grabs the lapels of his jacket, her eyes fixed on his tie, “I…I wanted to be better for you. You’ve been through so much, and I didn’t want to add to that burden.”
“Em,” he says, cupping her cheek, making her look back up at him, “I love you,” he says, and she chokes on a sound halfway between a sob and a laugh as she shakes her head, “You could never be a burden.”
She doesn’t know what to say, isn’t sure that there is anything that could be said, so she leans forward, closing the gap between them as she presses her lips against his. Everything else stops, and all she can feel is him. His hand at her cheek, the other pressing into her lower back as he pulls her closer, both of them lost in something they know they have been walking towards for years.
They only pull away when Oxygen becomes necessary, both of them laughing as they lean their foreheads against each other.
“I love you too,” she says, lifting her hand to cup his cheek, her thumb pressing into his lower lip, “I have for a long time.”
“We have a lot to talk about,” he says, kissing her thumb before she removes it, smiling as he leans in to kiss her again, “If we ever get out of here.” She laughs and presses her head into his shoulder, her body feeling light for the first time in as long as she can remember, “Still want to kill them?”
“Maybe not kill,” she says, tilting her head up to look at him, “But I’m sure I’ll think of some kind of revenge.”
Aaron laughs and leans in to kiss her, both of them once again lost in it, in each other, until the door is pulled open and they break apart at the sound of a squeal.
They elope seven months later.
They break the news to Penelope by leaving a photo taken at the courthouse on her desk, along with a message written on a brightly coloured sticky note.
Thank you.
Love, The Hotchners

hihihihi! 🥹💕 i want to let you know that i adore your hotch fics! and i wanted to ask if you’d be ok—but no pressure!!!— to write one with bombshell!reader waking up from anesthesia and forgetting hotch and her are already together and starts flirting with him the way bombshell!reader absolutely would lol? thank you!
thanks for requesting lovely! fem, 1k
You don’t remember waking up, but you’re sitting against a pillow with a yoghurt in your hand. You must’ve been on some sort of auto-pilot… Are you in a hospital gown?
You put your yoghurt down on the table that’s been wheeled over your lap and stare at the white-blue chequered gown creased between your thighs. Your head feels heavy.
“You okay?”
You drag your gaze to the source of the voice.
Agent Hotchner sits in the chair next to your bed. He has one leg crossed over the other, but he notices your confusion and his nonchalance turns to concern. “You need help?”
“With the yoghurt?” you ask.
“Yeah, honey. I can help.”
You roll that over in your mind. Stern Agent Hotchner just called you honey.
You’ve been trying to convince him for a while that you’re someone worth being sweet to. Trying to sway him, because there are parts of him you can’t get out of your head when he’s not around. He has not yet been swayed. Honey is a hand held out you’re going to snatch.
Hotch stands. He goes to pick up your yoghurt.
“What, are you gonna spoon feed me?” you ask, a clumsy drawl to your voice.
“I was going to… but I don’t like your tone.”
Is he flirting back? You must’ve hit your head. “Coward,” you murmur. Speaking of hitting your head, there’s a throbbing behind your eyes, and a dryness to your throat bordering on uncomfortable. The yoghurt was there for a reason, clearly, but you don’t have the energy in you to eat seductively.
“My head hurts,” you say quietly.
You close your eyes.
“I know.” A hand touches your face. You stay very still, though your heart doesn’t. “You don’t feel too hot. Do you want a drink? I can get you anything.”
“Your hand is so big…”
“Not so much bigger than your own,” he says.
“Prove it.”
He says your name like he knows you well, which sets your racing heart off all over again. But, used to hiding from him, you open your eyes to watch him and wipe all surprise from your face. You raise your hand, and he raises his, and you press your fingers together. Your fingertips don’t reach his, his palm wider, warmer. You thread your fingers carefully into the gaps between his, your lips curling into a satisfied smile.
Less satisfied when he closes his hand around yours.
“You’re teasing me,” you say.
“Honey, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Why don’t you lay back properly?”
“Super, super forward.” You lay back under the pressure of his hand, stricken by the feeling that he’s done something like that before. You rest your head against your elevated pillows and have to give up —you can’t hide how surprised you are at his open touching, his face so close to yours you can see every warm fleck in his dark eyes.
“You look startled,” he murmurs.
“I think you’ve been bodysnatched.”
“I have?”
“Yes.” You nod. “I can’t keep up. And I’m usually pretty great at that.”
“At what?”
“Flirting.”
“Oh,” he says, taking your hand again, pulling it toward his mouth, “you think I’m flirting?”
“Is there something wrong with me?”
“Not beyond the usual. You’re more lucid than they suspected you’d be, actually.” He kisses your knuckles.
“I’ve hit my head.”
“No, honey, you were under anaesthesia. Everything’s fine.”
“You’ve hit your head.”
He breathes out a laugh. “I don’t remember any injuries, but I’d love to know why you think so.”
“You’re kissing me.”
He pauses, lowering your hand. “Yes?” he says cautiously.
“Would you want to do it again?”
Hotch puts your hand on your chest. He cups your cheek in one hand, takes your shoulder into the other, and leans down to see you eye to eye. “Are you feeling okay?” he asks. You can feel the love he has for you in each word.
Weirdly, you can feel it in yourself, too. Like, more than a crush. More than wanting him to spin you around or play with your thigh under a desk. You really love him.
“I think I forgot you,” you say softly.
“Amnesia is a very common symptom of anaesthesia, don’t worry.” He pulls your face up to peck you, quick but not without a gentleness that has your hands thrumming with pins and needle. “I thought you were acting strange, but I put it down to discomfort. Sorry, I imagine it’s very disconcerting to feel you don’t know me.”
He just kissed you. “No, I know you, I just… I think I love you, but you don’t usually want me back.”
He rubs your cheek with his thumb. “I’ve always wanted you,” he says, his dulcet tenor another comfort entirely. “And I love you, whether you remember it or not. Should we try to finish your yoghurt?”
“You really love me?”
He turns your face to press a kiss into your eyebrow. “You don’t remember?”
“I do–” You begin before thinking about it, and realise that you’re telling the truth. You remember that he loves you. Agent Hotchner loves you. He’s in your hospital room handling you like thin glass.
“Well, is there much else to remember?”
You practically smirk at him. “I can think of some things.”
“Wow!” He leans down for another kiss. “You’re awful,” he murmurs, his smile soft on your lips.

A Gentle Beginning
Aaron Hotchner was known for his intensity. In the field, his focus never wavered, every decision sharp and decisive. But here, in the quiet warmth of his bedroom, that intensity softened, replaced with something infinitely more tender. You lay beside him, your breath uneven, heart pounding beneath your chest as the weight of this moment pressed between you.
He had been patient, waiting for you to feel comfortable. Never pushing, always reading you with the same quiet perceptiveness he used on the job. Tonight felt different, though—the air between you thick with anticipation neither of you had addressed out loud but was felt in every lingering touch.
"Are you sure?" His voice was low, just above a whisper, the kind of tone he only used when it was just the two of you. His hand brushed your cheek, fingers warm as they traced the curve of your jaw.
You nodded, unable to meet his gaze, your cheeks burning. There was no denying the flutter of nervousness in your stomach, but the desire to be close to him, to truly feel him, was stronger.
He shifted closer, his chest brushing against yours as he pressed a soft kiss to your lips, slow and patient. It was always like this with Aaron—intentional, deliberate, like he wanted to memorize the shape of you with every movement.
Your fingers trembled slightly as they slipped beneath the hem of his shirt, exploring the solid plane of his chest. Aaron inhaled sharply at the contact, his eyes darkening with a desire he’d been holding back for your sake.
“You don’t have to be nervous,” he whispered, his forehead resting against yours. His breath fanned across your lips, and your heart ached with how gentle he was being. "We’ll take it slow... as slow as you need."
"I just..." you swallowed, the words stuck in your throat. You weren’t used to being so vulnerable, especially not with him. But Aaron had this way of making you feel safe, like he’d protect every fragile part of you if you let him. "I want to be good for you."
He pulled back slightly, cupping your face in his hands. His eyes were soft, the rough edges of his features softened in the moonlight filtering through the window. "You're perfect. Don’t ever think you have to be anything more than what you already are. Just… let me take care of you."
His words melted the last of your hesitation. You nodded again, this time more confidently, and Aaron’s lips met yours once more, deeper this time. His kiss carried a promise—slow, steady, and filled with unspoken love.
Hope you enjoyed :) xx

Aaron tossed off the blanket, letting out a small sigh of relief. “When did it get so hot?” he grumbled, his morning voice prominent. As he rolled over to his back, you spotted a big wet spot on the front of his tee shirt from just how much he was sweating.
Still, you scooted closer to him anyway and tossed an arm over his abdomen, his familiar scent filling your senses. “News said there’d be an excessive heat wave today.”
“It's probably ninety degrees already,” he complained, “and it's not even 9:00 yet.”
Rolling onto your side to face him, you left a trail of kisses along his jawline. “Hey, Mr. Grumpy Gills,” you giggled, referencing one of your kids’ favorite movies. “When life gets you down, you know what you gotta do?”
“It's sweltering! How in the world could you possibly want to cuddle right now?” Aaron ignored your attempt to brighten the mood, instead opting to toss a pillow over his head and groan into it.
You just pulled the pillow away and left another peck on his jaw. “Because I love you. And because our children are gonna come in here any minute to take you away from me.”
He noticed the small pout that followed your statement, the expression enough to soften even Aaron Hotchner, king of stoicism, up. “Alright, fine. I'll allow it. But only because you drive a hard bargain.”
Your pout was replaced with a smirk as you snuggled closer into his side. “Mmm, that means a lot, coming from an ex-prosecutor. Maybe I should've gone to law school with you.”
“You're too sensitive for the big house, or whatever they say,” Aaron snickered. After noticing your look of offense, he quickly covered with, “I didn't mean it in a bad way. You have feelings. It's a very nice thing to come home to after dealing with emotionless psychopaths all day.”
“I think you're trying to compliment me. I'll take it.”
His lips met yours for a quick peck before saying, “I have nothing but compliments for you, my love,” Then, he met you with a second, much longer kiss, and while he tasted like morning breath, moments like this were so rare that you were willing to look past it.
One of his large hands met your leg, his calloused fingertips trailing along your bare skin. It felt like a lifetime since you'd been like this, with two children always needing your attention and the FBI always needing Aaron's. Just a simple touch of his fingers had you forgetting about the outside world, if even for just a moment.
Your lips met his neck, his stubble scratchy against your skin. He'd been away on a case in Seattle for about a week, and you were certain he hadn't shaved the whole trip. You liked it that way anyway.
His hand traveled further up under your nightgown, settling on your thigh. He squeezed the supple skin, a gesture of both affection and want.
“Are you trying to go for number three?” you joked before kissing his neck once more.
“Believe me,” Aaron chuckled, “if I knew I had enough time, I'd certainly try.”
As if on cue, four scurrying feet came stamping across the hardwood floor into your bedroom. “Good morning, Daddy!” both of your children yelled in sync, climbing onto the edge of the bed.
“That's why you're not allowed a third,” you mumbled into his ear. “The ones you have don't even appreciate me.”
“They love you, I promise,” he whispered, kissing your cheek. To the kids, he said, “Good morning. Don't you have anything else you want to say?”
They both turned to you, sheepish looks coming across their tiny, adorable faces. “Good morning, Mommy.”
“That's better,” Aaron said, gaining him a snicker from you. “Now, may I ask why the two of you are up so early and you're already in your swimsuits?”
It was then that you realized he was right. Jack, the older of your children, was sporting his favorite Spiderman swim trunks, while his little sister, Libby, had managed to dress herself in a cherry-print swimsuit she hadn't quite grown into yet. They made your heart melt.
“Daddy,” Libby sighed, clearly exasperated with her father, “don't you know what day it is?”
It happened to be the day your kids hadn't stopped talking about for weeks: the beginning-of-summer pool party you and Aaron threw every year for your friends and his coworkers at the BAU.
Aaron tapped a finger against his chin, his brows furrowing as he thought. “Let's see… it's not Libby’s birthday, and it's not Jack’s birthday, it's not my birthday, and I don't think it's your mom’s birthday,” his last comment earned him a sarcastic look from you. “Hmm, what day could it be?”
You joined in on his little game, tapping against your chin as you pretended to think. “Perhaps it's Christmas?”
Jack narrowed his eyes at you. “It's too early in the year for Christmas,” he said matter-of-factly.
“You're right.” As you continued tapping your finger, you shot Aaron a knowing look, which he gladly returned. He could tell by the gleam in your eye exactly what you meant with that look. “Is it…”
Each of you grabbed a kid, tickling and eliciting little squeals and giggles. “Pool party day?!” the two of you shouted in sync.
Libby thrashed around in your arms, laughing and squirming, while Jack attempted to escape his father's arms. Moments like these were almost as rare as the ones with just you and Aaron, so you had to take advantage of them while you could.
“It's pool party day!” Libby squeaked, while Jack was laughing so hard, he could barely breathe.
Their smiles and laughs pulled at your heartstrings. You wondered when the universe decided to make your babies grow up, since it seemed like only yesterday when you had a newborn and a two-year-old.
Bringing yourself out of your nostalgic trance, you pulled yourself out of the bed, grabbing each kid by the hand. “Who wants to make pancakes while Daddy’s in the shower?”
Soon enough, all your friends had arrived and it felt like summer had too. Penelope and Spencer were currently entertaining all the kids, while the other men were crowded around the grill and the rest of the ladies were sitting poolside and working on their tans.
“You ever wonder if either of them will have kids?” JJ asked, nodding toward Penelope and Spencer.
“Spencer, a hundred percent,” Emily answered, like her statement was a fact. “Penelope, I'm not so sure.”
You were next to jump into the conversation, not even bothering to look up from your magazine. “Why do you ask, Jen?”
JJ let out a longing sigh. “It's been so long since we've had a baby around here.”
Putting the magazine down, you looked over to her, eyebrows creased. “Henry's only three. It hasn't been that long.”
“You don't miss having a baby at our get-togethers? Emily, where do you stand?”
“Don’t look at me,” Emily said with wide eyes. “If I didn't have to change another diaper for a lifetime, it still wouldn't be long enough.” She was the one person in the group that was rather indifferent to children, but babies, she'd rather not talk about or be around.
“Yeah, babies are nice,” you said, “but the pregnancy part? That's what I'd rather go a lifetime without.”
“Well, I'm sure there's one thing we can all agree on,” JJ snickered. “At least making the baby is fun.”
Emily tossed the pillow behind her back in the direction of her coworker, giggling all the while. “Jennifer!”
“What?” she laughed as she swatted the pillow away. “Am I wrong?”
You let out a small snicker yourself, shooting a glance in the direction of your husband, who was currently taking his turn in manning the grill.
Neither of your friends missed that look, both their mouths falling agape at the expression. “Spill!” they squealed in sync.
Penelope made her way over from the edge of the pool, her face overtaken by the brightest smile known to mankind. “I heard the ‘Someone has beans to spill’ variety of squeals and giggles. What am I missing?”
“Nothing,” you insisted with an eye roll.
Emily patted the edge of her chaise, welcoming Penelope over. “Come sit, we're gonna get it out of her. After all, two out of three of us are profilers.”
Your eyes narrowed at the brunette. “Do you forget that I also used to be a profiler before my kids came along?”
“Stop changing the subject,” Penelope said with a swat of her hand. “Spill your guts. What did I miss?”
“Well, we were talking about how it's been so long since anyone on the team, past or present, has had a kid,” Jennifer explained.
“And someone looked at her husband with that look,” Emily further explained.
You scoffed. “It was not that look.”
“It totally was,” your friends spoke in sync.
Penelope's face lit up like a child in a candy store, her mind clearly running rampant with ideas of what the look meant. “Oh my God, are you-”
“No!” you quickly interrupted, knowing exactly where that question was headed. “Not yet anyway,” you mumbled under your breath.
The three of them practically jumped out of their seats and gathered around you, all screams and smiles.
“We haven't even had the conversation yet!”
“But you're going to!” Penelope insisted.
You rolled your eyes, but internally, you couldn't be happier for the gift of friendship from these three women. Jennifer, the mom friend in more ways than one. Emily, the voice of reason who not-so-secretly had a funny side and always knew how to make you laugh. And Penelope, the perfect shoulder to cry on and perfect soul to confide in. Lucky didn't even begin to describe how you felt about knowing these women.
Suddenly, you found yourself— as Penelope had said— spilling your guts. “I don't know. This morning just felt… different. Like, maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have another baby around.”
The three of them flooded you with comments of love and support, hugs wrapping around you from each direction. Having another baby would be different, of course, but your friends were making sure that you knew it would be a good kind of different.
“I still have to get Aaron on board, so no one get too excited,” you reminded them.
JJ was already way ahead of you. “We've got the kids, Rossi and Derek have the grill. Don't worry about anything out here. You and your man deserve a moment of free time.”
“Just so we're clear,” you said, pointing a finger as if to further prove your point, “we are just going to talk. No funny business.”
Emily snickered. “Yeah, the same way you guys used to ‘talk’ on the jet?” Your cheeks heated to a bright red shade at her comment.
“Ew, Hotch is in the mile high club?!” Penelope practically screamed. Luckily, everyone else seemed too engrossed in conversation to hear her, but you were still mortified nonetheless.
“Okay, scratch what I said. I'm actually going inside to give myself a lobotomy.”
And with that, your friends were shouting in sync different variations of “Have fun!”
Then, with a smile on your face from both the joy of friendship and the love you had for your husband, you found yourself heading over to the grill and pulling Aaron away. His reaction was nothing short of laughter as you practically dragged him toward the house, his shirt nearly coming off with how hard you were tugging it.
Lips met skin as you closed the back door behind you. Aaron let out another chuckle, though he surely wasn't protesting your affection. “Woah, that look in your eyes tells me you're the one thinking about number three,” he commented, referencing your words from that morning.
“Well,” you said as your fingers started to trail under the hem of his dark gray tee shirt. With another kiss to his neck, you continued, “About that…”

I saw you’re taking Aaron requests… I would love if you write where Aaron and reader were in love in college but obviously life happened and they split apart and they meet up again all these years later and how you think their reuinion would go 🥹 ty
Hii, lovely🥰 ty for this cute request....hope you like it!! Warnings: fluff, mom!reader, use of y/n, mentions of school, (1.1k)
Aaron is running late. Nothing unusual with how busy he gets with the work, but it still bothers him. It's the parent-teacher conference, and he really didn't want to be late. Especially when he knows that Jack's teacher put him as the last parent of the day (knowing how long he works from previous experiences).
There is only one car in the school parking lot when Aaron finally arrives.
He basically sprints from his car to Jack's classroom, even though he called the teacher he would be late. Aaron knocks on the door, and comes in.
"Good evening," Aaron greets the teacher warmly, extending his right hand to her. " I'm sorry for being late. Thank you for waiting for me."
"It's no problem, Mr. Hotchner, " she says, "you aren't the only one late today." She adds with an amused smile.
"Oh, really? " Aaron's always the last one here, so he is a bit surprised to hear that.
"Yes, she should be here soon, too...-" the teacher replies, just as there's another knock on the door.
"Would it be a problem for you, Mr. Hotchner if I combined you two last parents of the day together?" the teacher asks. She, as expected, wants to go home already, too.
Aaron understands that more than anybody, " of course not. I don't mind at all." And why should he mind? Jack's always more than good in school, great grades and well-behaved. So he's not afraid for the other parent to hear that. He wouldn't be afraid even if Jack wasn't doing the best in school either.
"Thank you so much," the teacher says before she gets up, and opens the door.
The wind gets knocked out of Aaron.
It's you.
Fuck, it's really you.
And gosh. You look even more beautiful then he could remember.
You were just two young fools in college the last time he saw you. And now....And now Aaron can't believe his eyes. He should have known you would never grow out of your beauty.
"Aaron? Aaron Hotchner? Oh my god, is it really you?" You can't seem to believe the sight in front of you either.
Your eyes are wide open in shock, amd a small smile appears on your lips. He looks exactly as you thought he would.
Still so handsome, and the few streaks of white hair making him look it even more. And don't even get me started on the suit he wears.
"Yeah, it's me," he chuckles. Aaron stands up, and out of the routine he extends his hand out to you.
You completely ignore it (along with the etiquette of what's an appropriate greeting after seeing somebody after a long, long time), and embrace Aaron.
Aaron heart skips a beat, but he embraces you back. Maybe just a tiny bit less tightly than you.
The teacher watches this whole commotion in pure shock as she goes to sit down in her chair.
The click of her heels against the floor is the thing that brings you out of your delighted shock, and you pull away with a light blush on your face.
"I take it you two know each other?" the teacher jokes, and you and Aaron take the seats opposite her.
"Yes," you both say at the same time.
"Uh, college..." you also add. The teacher just politely nods, and starts talking about Jack and your son.
Oh god. You have a son, too! Aaron haven't even realised that you were there for the same reason as him since he's laid his eyes on you. It's all like a fever dream.
The counseling finally comes to an end, and Aaron is more than eager to get out of the class just to catch up with you for a bit.
As soon as you two exit the school, and head into the parking lot you are looking at each other.
"Oh my gosh, how long has it been, Aaron?" you question with a smile, and you look him over a few more times.
"More then 20 years," Aaron tells you with a same smile as yours. His eyes all over you, too.
"Oh, wow. We are getting old huh?" You chuckle. Aaron laughs a belly deep laugh.
Surprisingly, it's so good to hear that you both have the same laughs as you did in college. It stirs something in both of your chests.
"I am," Aaron says, "but you are definitely not." His compliment catches you off guard, yours cheeks heating up for whatever reason like some school girl's.
You smile sheepishly at him," you don't look too bad yourself."
Aaron only chuckles at your words. "So what are you doing here?" He asks, suddenly more serious and so much more curious. "I thought you lived across the world as a big lawyer...?"
You nod with an amused but a bit sad smile, " yes, but you know, life happened, and I got a pretty great offer for a position here so I just took it, and moved here a few weeks after that...."
"And I was actually wondering if you still lived here-" you get interrupted mid sentence by your phone ringing.
"I'm sorry," you say, and pick up the phone. It's clear that it's the nanny calling you, and Aaron knows you have to hurry home before you even hang up the phone.
With your phone in your pocket you tell Aaron with a regretful expression," I'm sorry, Aaron. I have to run home, the nanny can't stay much longer."
"No, it's totally okay. I should hurry home to Jack, too."
"I wish we could talk longer, Aaron, and catch up on things. Would you- Would you like to go for a coffee someday soon?" You hesitantly ask, and Aaron just thinks how there's no reason for you to be unsure of his answer, when he would always say yes.
"It's like you're reading my mind," Aaron smiles sincerely at you," I wanted to ask you the same thing. Here," he swiftly scribbles his personal number on his business card, and hands it to you.
"Call me?"
"Or you call me," you basically do the same thing with your personal number on your business card, and you hand it to him.
"I will," he promises, and you know he's honest with his intentions to do just that. You could always count on is words, his promises.
"Great, I'll see you soon then. Goodbye Aaron Hotchner." You say your goodbye. You want to get in your car as quickly as you can just to calm your racing heart.
"Goodbye, y/n." Aaron says softly, his eyes following your figure until you get in your car.
He even waits for you to drive off first just to make sure he didn't just imagine this whole thing.
And he is more than relieved to know he didn't.
And lets just say that Jack wonders why his dad keeps smiling so weirdly once Aaron finally gets home.

Tumblr media
1. Facial communication
10:07am, Behavioral Analysis Unit, bullpen.
You were sat at your desk, not really far from Spencer, looking up at him from time to time. It’s not as if your relationship was that new but it was still blossoming. However you weren’t over those looks you could give the other, the tiny smile on the corner of your lips when you catch the other’s eyes, mostly when you can't help thinking about last night. Skin against skin, warmth against warmth, and that relaxed feeling when waking up in the morning after those activities. To be honest, it may never fade. Your co-workers would find it cute if they noticed or just laugh at it at first if they catch you at the beginning, but they would stop with time.
It’s been over two months you’re dating, and a year of knowing each other, when you joined the BAU. Somehow, even by being the unit chief's daughter you’ve never got the chance to meet him before, as you were always out or the nose in your studies. Surprising right ? But to your father’s dismay, he would have preferred that it wouldn’t happen. That you would have continued to do your own stuff, become a pianist, instead of deciding to follow the same dangerous path as him AND decide to get in a relationship with one of your co-workers. As if you couldn’t get more involved with them, with a dangerous life that could, will definitely change you. But you were young, stubborn and now in love.
As you looked up at Spencer just to get a brief look at something else than down at your papers, somebody scrap his throat making you look to the side where the sound came from. You locked eyes with your father as he was walking to his office, eyebrows slightly furrowed in your direction. You feel your cheeks heat up and look back down at your work, as if nothing happened. This may be nothing but it was enough to feel embarrassed about, facial communication being important between the two Hotchners. You haven't told him but he is not dumb, it was that protective father scold, the "don't even come next to my daughter" type. Spencer seemed to have noticed that small interaction as he became a bit clumsy with his papers, which made you grin.
2. Longing touches
5:18pm, Kansas City, Kansas.
Here it is, the final moment. The UnSub was finally caught, Albert Schumacher an ex-teacher who couldn't bear the thought of being separated from his beloved job. If he couldn't take care of children, why not making his own kindergarten ?
Because of the sweet month of November, it was already dark at that time, and cold, but not enough to be blinded by the night. The unsub in the car, Spencer was once again to your side, his hand on the small of your back as usual. The case was heavy, but it was finally over. You let out a breath as he was just resting his hand here, stroking his thumb a bit as an attempt to provide you a bit of comfort. Honestly, if he could hold you closer, he would. Even in front of everyone, gluing at your side.
An hour and half later, you decided to take a walk to clear your mind. To warm your heart through Kansas' cold, Spencer decided to keep you company. Through the walk he resisted the urge to take your hand in his, wrap an arm around your waist, hold you, hug you, warming you with his body warmth to keep you from shaking and feeling yours as well. He hated when other people touched him but he never got enough of yours. He kept wanting more even more because of the situation with your father who still didn't know about the two of you.
3. Keeping compagny
9:10pm, FBI private jet, Kansas City, Kansas -> Quantico, Virginia.
It was late, the winter night and cold were almost overwhelming, the case was over, a case involving children disappearing. The flight from Kansas City to Quantico may have been a two hours flight, but everyone was tired from all the efforts given in the last few days, few hours of sleep in the agents' system and the possible small jet lag that might hit the next day, the cold hitting their bones.
When you sat in the jet, you sat as a reflex not next to your father but next to Spencer, seeking comfort to him just like most of your nights after work for the last few months. He didn't realize either that he took the seat where your father was about to sit on, as he just sat to your side, closer than if he was sitting next to anyone else. Your father walked, prepared to sit next to you but stopped when he saw Spencer almost glued to your side in a blink. Instead, he sat in the seat in front of him, keeping a visual on the both of you. It's been a while since he has been observing you, your bond. He knew something was happening, not just because he was your father but also because he knew there was something happening, something above co-working, above friendship.
You were doing your best not to show it even when going back together from a case but right now you just didn't really care hiding this. You were both too exhausted to continue on this, maybe it was the irrationality of tiredness talking but anyway. Everyone knew there was something between the two of you, he would have known a way or another. Fuck the way you planned again and again to tell him, you just want to lean into the other and sleep until the end of the flight.
Everyone took a small nap during the flight except Hotch who was keeping himself busy, thinking back about the details of your position, the way you leaned to the other in your sleep. He thought back about the glances you throw to the other, the touches and the more he thought about it, the more he was upset.
Two hours later, you woke up as long as the other as the plane had landed. You give Spencer a small shake to his shoulder to wake him up. At the same time, you saw your father getting up and giving you a quick look that told a lot. He seemed tense at you but you shake that thought off as Spencer woke up, looking at you. Oh, how you couldn't wait to go back to his apartment and just lie in the bed next to other and have rest.
You both get off the plane and see your father outside. Usually, he would wait for you to at least wish you a good night/evening or something of that kind, but this time no. He didn't go right away but when you got off the plane he was just starting to walk away.
"Good night..?" you said to catch his attention.
It visibly worked as he stopped walking. He looked at you with tired eyes but still with distance in his look.
"Good night..." he answered with a small hesitation. He seemed to want to add something so you just let him talk, even if it was a bit tensed. "Do you need a ride home ?" he added as he proposed you usually, but already knowing the answer this time. Not that he never did but this time he was just sure. He never liked the co-driving with Spencer. You had your driver license and you could afford for a car, why relying on your co-worker even if you lived not so far from the other ? He didn't need to make express his discontent to make himself understood this time. He wasn't waiting for an answer.
"No thanks.. Spencer is driving me back home tonight." you answered, it was a bit awkward but you tried to get past that.
+ Confrontation
He nodded and scoffed a bit. "Yeah, of course."
You felt a tinge of guilt at this, something was wrong. You may know why he reacts like this and you don't think to have the mind at this at the moment, and you don't think he has either. "What do you mean ?" you asked, oblivious.
He faced you, looking at you in the eyes. He was silent at first but finally answered. "You know what I mean." There was a hint of venom in his voice. He kept his voice low enough for you and Spencer to hear. Spencer who was just in the back, tired and uncomfortable. This was clearly not how he wanted to get things clear about your relationship and neither do you.
"Then tell me. Tell me what you mean, what's wrong." You replied, looking at him in the eyes. You knew it would hurt but the conversation had to be done, and if he was going that way then his suspicions would be confirmed that way.
"What's wrong is this," he said, referencing to Spencer and you, giving him a look. "Do you have any idea of how unconscious it is ? Dating your co-worker, really ? And without even preventing anyone, you could get more than suspended, did you even think about your lives ?" he added in his boss tone. Yes, he wasn't just your dad but also your chief, but to be honest, you weren't expecting your unit chief talking to you.
All you did was nod once, looking slightly down before raising your eyes to him again and as you were about to answer, throat tight, but he speaks again.
"I'm not finished. What if one of you gets in danger trying to avoid an something to the other ?" He added, his voice was hiding of emotion by his attitude. You catch a glance of Rossi in the back who was about to call for your dad to calm down a bit, to let his role of chief down to let the father speak. He knew that he just wasn't ready for you to grow up as your relationship looked serious and not just a story without tomorrow. He was still getting used to having you around at the BAU, his daughter, what's left of his family alongside Jack.
You said nothing, letting him cool down. The atmosphere wasn't as tensed but more awkward. "And- and he's too for you. Why didn't you choose someone your age ?" he added after a small blank. You knew it was just an excuse, your gap with Spencer wasn't even too big, around five years. You knew it was an excuse not to say "why didn't you choose someone who's not from the FBI ?", questioning your career choices.

A/N: I'm so sorry I didn't know how to end this so here it is. Might do this series though ? I would like that. I want to make a happy ending but I just can't align more words. I don't think anyone would be interested btw but let me know. Perhaps it made me think about the first chapters of that series "Spencer x Prentiss!Reader" if you read it but I can't explain why lmao. It was so weird how I wrote this: I started by 1 then continued with 3 and the bonus then ended with 2 so I'm sorry if it was short lol

hi dear, I just saw that you sre taking requests and just ran here 🥹🥹🙏🏻 could you maybe do a aaron hotchner x reader, where he just confesses his love for her? maybe in a tense situation or something? thanks 🥹🥹🩵
note: this may be really bad because i’m not good with non smut related things lol. but i tried my best pookie
warnings: hostage situation (unsub kidnapped hotch and reader), love confessions, emotions, angst, general criminal minds related issues, etc.
you woke up with a throbbing pain in your head as you opened your eyes to a dark room. your eyesight was blurry, probably from a concussion you likely had. you could feel it. as you tried to move your wrists, you realized they were bound.
the last thing you remembered was walking into the abandoned storage house with hotch and next thing you knew, you were waking up in a dark room. and then it clicked that you had been kidnapped. you looked around, desperately trying to see if aaron was in the room as well. and that’s when you felt movement against your back.
the two of you were tied up together, your backs against one another.
“hotch-“ you whispered only to be shushed by him.
“be very quiet,” he whispered back. “we’ve been taken. i’m not sure how long it’ll be until the others find us.”
you nodded your head though you knew he couldn’t see it. how you saw it was that this was a highly dangerous situation. the unsub you guys were close to catching was a man who wanted to make a name for himself, having a personal vendetta against the BAU and causing the most gruesome murders. to be tied up in his warehouse, well it wasn’t a positive situation. and you knew aaron was scared too.
“what do we do?” you whispered. your hands were tied behind your back but you tried your best to reach for aaron’s fingers, seeking to comfort him and yourself.
“there isn’t much we can do,” aaron said, squeezing your fingers. “except try to talk him down. but we profiled that he wouldn’t go down easily and that he would likely go down with suicide by cop. he will not listen to reason.”
you bit your lip, swallowing. the situation didn’t seem to have a positive outcome regardless of how you looked at it. either you and aaron were dying or the unsub will die trying. to say you weren’t ready was an understatement.
and without thinking, you simply said “i love you,” very quietly. thinking that you were going to die really puts a stop to anxieties towards admitting your feelings. perhaps that’s why a lot of people admit to things when on their deathbeds.
aaron tensed for a moment before swallowing. your words had made him tear up as he heard the rawness in your tone. “i love you too,” he said back to you.
those words alone provided a comfort to you. that even if you were to die, you’d die knowing the man you loved indeed loved you back. and that’s all we need right? to know that we are loved in death just as much as we are in life.

chaotic hotchner siblings hcs (alternatively titled, jack and ellie hotchner; reasons 2 and 3 why hotch takes anti anxiety meds)
-you ever see that tiktok of that little boy meeting his baby sister, and she’s wrapped in a blanket, and the first thing out of his mouth is “she doesn’t have any arms?” that’s how your lovely son introduces himself to his sister. it’s brought up by every member of the BAU every time they see jack for years after
-when you guys try and teach ellie how to ride a bike, jack runs holding the handlebars to get ellie some speed before he has her try by herself. he sends her off with a “don’t eat shit!”. aaron gets halfway into his lecture before a crash cuts him off—ellie had hit a curb and flipped herself into a bush. her curly head of hair pops up moments later, gleefully proclaiming “i ate shit!”
-they match each other’s hyperfixations a little TOO well. one time it was michael jackson and not only did jack twist his ankle trying to moonwalk, “HEE HEE” had to be banned because if aaron heard it from across the house one more time he would have had an aneurysm
-ellie’s middle initial, O, might as well be short for “out of pocket”. she was benched at one of her soccer games once because a girl on her team had said something hurtful about jack not being her “real” brother because they had different moms. your daughter promptly responded with, “well, YOUR mommy had you and she never comes to our games!”
-despite their age gap, you and aaron will refer to them as the tornado twins because when the two of them are hyped up about anything, they’re forces of nature.
-the first time ellie was ever catcalled, she was 13, and it was by a neighbor boy skating by while she and jack gardened outside. before jack could turn around and give him hell, ellie promptly switched settings on the hose and powerwashed the boy off his skateboard. the “YES!” jack screamed scared you and aaron, but by the time you two had made it outside, the two of them were mid chest bump and the boy had long vanished. thankfully, your ring doorbell had gotten the entire thing. aaron will watch it whenever he needs a laugh
STOP i love each and every one of those oh my god????
jack 😭 i can imagine him entering the hospital room, ready to meet his sister after waiting what has felt like forever, but he's soo shy 🥺 he's all smiles when he sees you, but soberly approaches ellie's little bassinet. when he sees her, his eyebrows furrow all quizzically, looks up at aaron, and asks about her arms 😭 he's so sweet
first, the visual of aaron lecturing jack, but then being interrupted by ellie's crash 😭 aaron immediately sprints ahead to her rescue, but not without tossing over his shoulder (over ellie's initial wails before she pops up 😭) "we're not done discussing this🫵🏻"
and omg aaron has soo many, "oh god help me🙄" moments due to the two of them just wreaking havoc 😭 but despite it all, he wouldn't have it any other way 🥹🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
THE SOCCER ONE i'm 100% writing a full fic about that omg 😭 hold me to it PLEASE
ellie with the hose 😭 it's the way she does not hesitate AT ALL. and jack being all celebratory about his sister's actions LMAO i love them both so so so so so so much 😭
you're quite literally a genius thank you for sharing all of those 😭 i'm actually obsessed and will be thinking about them forever 🫶🏻

prologue
once again a huge thanks to this angel @criminalskies 🥹🫂🩷

“Haley, I said no.”
“I don’t understand why you’re so opposed to that name.” She smiled; Aaron assumed it wasn’t a genuine reaction, but more of an attempt to lighten up the mood.
This happened a lot. She’d say something that made him think of you, he’d have a reaction, and she’d pretend she didn’t notice. It broke his heart, but there was nothing he could do about it.
“If you have a different name in mind I’m open to suggestions,” she added, taking his hands in hers.
He leaned in to kiss her. “Just any other name besides Jack. Please.”
“Okay.”
--
(20)
“Aaron…” you whined, kicking one of the pillows that decorated your bed on the floor. “Be done with it already.”
“My exam is at 8 am. I won’t have any time to revise in the morning. Just give me thirty more minutes.”
“I can’t sleep without you.”
“I know. But if I come to your bed to study, I will not be studying,” he argued, since there was no need of you to say anything for him to get what you were insinuating.
“I’ll just lay my head on your chest. I promise I won’t even talk to you.”
“Fine,” he said, always unable to say no to you; even though your weight on him and your sweet scent would definitely make the letters on his papers start dancing.
But you kept your promise. You carefully laid on him, letting him wrap one of his arms around you. The only thing you did before closing your eyes was kissing the inside of his wrist, just like you did every night.
“Good night.”
“Good night, tulip,” he whispered and turned his attention back to his notes. He’d ace the test and then he’d get to hear the words ‘I’m so proud of you, baby!’ from your sweet lips. Then all the sleepless nights of studying would be worth it.
--
(21)
That couldn’t be right. There was no way that was right.
H.B.
Aaron would never forget the heartbroken look on your face when you saw those letters. The way your excited smile faded into an expression that went straight through his heart and made it bleed.
He was desperate to comfort you, but how could he find the right words to say when his whole world was crumbling in front of his eyes too? Every single dream, every single plan for the future, every single promise had vanished into thin air.
“These are not my initials,” you said quietly. You were still holding his hand in yours, staring at the new mark on his skin.
“Baby…” he whispered, cupping your cheek.
“No, Aaron,” you said, your eyes slowly filling with tears, “These are not my initials.”
Aaron pulled you into his arms as you broke down crying. You were holding onto him with a strength he didn’t know you had. He rubbed your back, trying to clear up his own thoughts.
How could the girl in his arms not be his soulmate? His best friend, his lover, his partner in everything? You were his family.
“I don’t care,” he whispered in your ear. “I don’t care what the mark says. You’re my soulmate.”
“I’m not,” you sobbed, pulling back so you could sit face to face again.
“You are. You’re the love of my life.”
“Apparently I’m not though,” you raised your voice. He knew you weren’t angry at him, you were angry at life. “God, Aaron, what the fuck? How could we have been so wrong?”
“We haven’t been wrong. I’m not gonna let an unknown fucking force decide who I’m spending my life with. You’re the one I want and I’m staying with you.”
“That’s not how it goes.”
“That’s exactly how it goes.”
You closed your eyes and breathed deeply, the way you always did to calm yourself down.
“Maybe we’re just meant to be friends.”
Aaron grabbed your jaw with his hand and pulled your face close to his, “Tell me when I was inside you earlier making you cry about how good you felt, did it feel like we were meant to be just friends?”
You wrapped your hand around his wrist and removed his hand from your face. “It doesn’t matter how I feel.”
“That’s actually all that matters to me.”
A deep sigh escaped your lips. “What are we going to do, Aaron?”
“I don’t know. We’ll figure it out, as long as we’re together.”
“This isn’t how tonight was supposed to go.”
“I know, my tulip.”
“It’s unfair,” you added, like a kid whose toy was stolen by their sibling.
“I know. But I love you, okay?”
“Okay.”
Aaron was grateful you let him hold you when he pulled you into a warm embrace. But it was impossible to keep the thoughts from running into dark places. Like the clear skin on your own wrist which would be soon stained with initials that weren’t going to be his either.
--
(21)
It felt like the mark on Haley’s wrist was mocking you.
A.H.
The two letters you had been craving all your life to have them written on your skin, were decorating her wrist instead.
Haley was beautiful, smart, popular. The perfect girl next door.
You and Aaron had met her in high school. She was staring in a school play he was forced to participate in because of a bet he’d lost. You got along with her pretty well, and so did Aaron.
Back then you weren’t worried over the way they both used to geek over Star Wars – which you simply couldn’t get into, no matter how hard Aaron had tried to make you love – during rehearsals. You weren’t worried when he’d invited her to his birthday party that year and you had noticed her eyes sparkle when he had played his favorite Beatles’ song.
Back then none of that mattered. Because back then, Aaron was your soulmate.
Yet you still couldn't hate Haley, because she was in pain too.
Her birthday only a month after Aaron’s had confirmed your suspicions that his soulmate was her. And you could relate to her heartbreak, when Aaron had to break the news to her. When he informed her that no matter what their wrists said, he was choosing you instead.
Neither of you truly had him, and in that way you understood her.
--
(21)
“Here.” You placed the hot cup of coffee you’d made for Aaron, next to his book.
“Thank you, honey,” he said, reaching out his hand to touch your waist under your shirt. With that motion he pulled you close to him, so you were standing right in front of his chair.
He wrapped his arms around you and your own hands got lost between his hair. Aaron left a tiny kiss on your stomach and looked up at you. “I’m anxious.”
“You’re going to do great. You’ve been studying non-stop for days now.”
“I don’t feel like I’m doing enough,” he admitted.
“You’re always so hard on yourself.” Your thumb rubbed the short hair on his temples as you kissed the tip of his nose. The nose kiss was followed by a soft one on his lips, before you pulled away again. “You’re doing more than enough. And I’m so proud of you.”
His dimples made an appearance and your heart smiled at your success. “There’s my boy.”
“Shut up,” he laughed, rolling his eyes. You could just pinch his cheeks every time you made him shy.
“Do you want me to help? We can go through some questions together. I’ll ask, you’ll answer.”
“Yeah,” he said, looking through his notes. “Haley gave me-”
At the realization of saying her name, he paused.
“It’s okay, you can mention her around me, I’m not gonna break,” you said, hoping you successfully hid the fact that you were annoyed.
He cleared his throat and continued. “Her cousin took the same exams last year, so she gave me his notes. He has written down all the questions that were on the test.”
“Good then. Let’s get to work.”
--
(45)
“Good night, buddy,” he whispered, leaving a sweet kiss on his son’s forehead. Jack usually replied with a ‘Good night, daddy,’ but he was already fast asleep.
As Aaron made his way to the living room in order to clear up the floor from his son’s toys, he heard a knock on his door.
He walked towards it as silently as he could, and looked through the peep hole; the fear of a possible intruder still poisoning his blood.
But the face he saw on the other side of the door took his breath away.
A face he hadn’t seen in years. A face he saw every night in his sleep.
He didn’t let a second more to pass before opening his door.
“Y/N?” he said in a breath.
Your eyes were red, and full of tears. “I didn’t know where else to go.”

Penelope has always cared too much for her own good. At least, that's what everyone tells her. She doesn't think that baking cookies for her brooding boss is 'too much', but as Derek treks through the hallway of his apartment complex with her, cookies in hand, she can tell that it's on his mind.
She turns on her heel at the door, glaring viciously at him (he is not scared).
"You be nice to him, Derek. I know you have your little joke-y 'boss man' thing, but he looked really sad yesterday. He's alone, all alone and I don't care if he made you work last sunday, no one deserves to be alone!"
"Alright, alright, sweetheart," He promises her, though it's rather reluctant, "I won't tease him."
After one last long, scathing glance, she's sure he's telling the truth. She buzzes his apartment, hearing a gruff 'coming' from behind the door.
When Aaron Hotchner opens the door, and yes, Penelope does have to blink and make sure it's really Aaron Hotchner, there's a pink kiss mark on his cheek. It's glaringly obvious, perfectly-shaped, and a complete 180 from his typical attire.
"Penelope," He greets, confusion marring his features, "Morgan? Is everything alright?"
She doesn't have to turn to know that Derek is grinning.
"Uh, yes," She nods vigorously, "Everything's- fine. We just wanted to bring you.. cookies?" She brandishes the bag in her hand, and reaches blindly behind her for the one that Morgan has.
"'Got a little sugar of your own, huh boss man?" Derek quips, and Penelope rams her heeled foot into his toes.
Hotch's brow furrows, but no sooner does his confused frown form than a hand slips into view, tissue-clad and rubbing furiously at his cheek. He startles, glancing frantically to the side, at someone Derek and Penelope can't see.
They hear you, though, your panicked whisper, "My lipstick!"
Then he understands. His eyes widen, and he holds up a single finger, ducking behind the door as if he could rub it away and resurface clean-cheeked without any suspicion. They hear whispering, frantic and aggressive, then a smooch, and Aaron reappears smearing a thumb over his lips this time.
"Thank you for the cookies," He reaches for them, a pink-stained hand reaching for the bags that Penelope is clutching, "I, um.. we will enjoy them."
Penelope nods dumbly, and Morgan has to tug at her hand where she's frozen in place, "Yeah, and you'd better enjoy lunch at the BAU mondday, Hotch! You know little miss blabbermouth'll have the local news station reporting on your mystery woman if you don't do it first."

hello! may i say i absolutely love your writing??? so i thought i’d request something :) aaron is readers first actual relationship (like her first serious one?) and her family dynamics have been difficult while growing up (absent father, not a really close relationship with her mother, she always felt like more of a flatmate to her yk?), so she hasn’t experienced what it feels like to be truly loved and wanted and aaron has given her that, which makes their relationship even more special and important to her. he’s basically the only person she fully trusts and vice versa. when they get into their first big fight, she gets overwhelmed and is afraid he’s going leave her and thinks things like “i knew this was too good to be true” etc. of course, they make up and aaron comforts her and assures her he’ll never leave her.
if this is something you don’t want to write, that’s totally fine!!! 🫶🏼
Thank you, sweet nonny, for your kind words and the request 🥹 And sorry this took me so long to post!! I hope you don't mind I tweaked a bit to play more on reader's anxiety than the fight aspect- I hope this is what you were looking for 🖤
Pairing: Aaron Hotchner x female reader (angsty angst + hurt/comfort)
—————
Stupid, you chastise yourself for the umpteenth time as the apartment door closes behind your partner. Evidently he’s taken all the air in the room with him because your lungs can’t seem to find any oxygen to breathe in. Stupid, stupid, stupid girl. What did you think was going to happen?
Rather than staring at the closed door in the vain hope that Aaron will walk back through it, you scrub your hands over your face and head down the hall to his bedroom. You stand on your tiptoes to reach your duffel bag in the closet that’s been sitting on a shelf since he first insisted you keep some things at his apartment. Maybe if you just give him space and then apologize, he won’t leave. After your dad walked out, that strategy had worked on most of your mother’s relationships, however short-lived they happened to be.
Your heart breaks at the thought of losing Aaron over something so seemingly trivial. Why hadn't you fought harder, spoken with more confidence in your voice? Why couldn’t you just let it go?
You had planned a quiet dinner at Aaron’s place to celebrate six months of absolute bliss together. All you had told him last week was there would be a surprise waiting for him at home, courtesy of the shiny new key on your ring you had yet to use. You spent the evening cooking the recipe that you had been buying ingredients for when you bumped into him at the grocery store, a smile on your face while the memory replayed in your head. As the clock neared seven, you left the food in the oven to stay warm and went about setting the table, complete with fresh flowers, candles, and Aaron’s favorite red wine. Music played softly in the background, a series of songs you put together that reminded you of your boyfriend that he was never allowed to find out about. You gave the sauce simmering on the stove another taste test, smacking your lips together before adding another pinch of oregano.
Then, you fired off a quick Can’t wait to see you soon! text to your boyfriend and settled down on the couch with your book to wait for his arrival from Quantico.
You waited… and waited, and checked your phone, and waited some more. As the minutes ticked by and the smile on your face faltered, you reasoned with a sigh that the BAU had probably gotten a case, and he was busy briefing the team before heading halfway across the country. You were no stranger to receiving a text or call from the jet, an apology for the untimely case and promise to make it up to you as soon as he was home.
But this radio silence felt different, and you released your bottom lip from its cage beneath your teeth with a quiet hiss when the familiar metallic taste of your anxiety getting the better of you touched your tongue. A thousand and one scenarios flew through your mind, possibilities of Aaron being hurt in the field or succumbing to another one of those fainting spells that his teammate and friend, Dave, had once warned you about.
Or maybe, just maybe, he had grown tired of you and was trying to figure out how to break things off.
Reaching the six month mark was a new milestone for you in a relationship. Most of your other relationships, if you could even call them that, didn’t make it past the third date. Aaron could probably profile you in his sleep, tell you that the absence of your father in your life and your strained relationship with your mother made it hard for you to recognize genuine connection. That you were a serial people pleaser, even at the expense of your own health and wellbeing, convinced that if you said and did all the right things, you would be worthy of people’s attention, time, and affection.
Hell, the person who cut in front of you in line for coffee could probably tell that about you by the way you insisted they go ahead first.
As the digital clock on the stove flickered to 10:00, your nerves over Aaron’s welfare outcompeted your guilt over bothering him at work. You unlocked your phone to find your earlier text to him delivered but unread, and pressed his contact picture to place the call. He picked up on the third ring, and you released a sigh of relief until he answered with an easy, “Hi, honey, how are you?”
Confusion muddled your features, but you kept your voice even as you answered, “Fine, my love. You got a new case?”
“Luckily no, and I’m so sorry I didn’t respond to your text earlier. I just got caught up trying to finish this report so I don’t have to work this weekend while we…” He trailed off with a quiet curse before coming back on the line. “Baby,” he breathed out, a heavy sigh laced with regret. “We were supposed to celebrate tonight, weren’t we?”
“It’s okay,” you offered immediately, not really answering his question as your gaze flicked up to the wax dripping down the half-eroded candles.
“No,” he responded firmly, and you could hear the distinct shuffling of papers in the background. “It’s not okay. It’s late, so there shouldn’t be traffic now. I’ll be home in twenty.”
You had spent those twenty minutes cleaning up the kitchen and convincing yourself that you weren’t really upset, just worried that he hadn’t eaten all day or taken proper care of himself. Then you changed out of your dress, opting instead for sweatpants and one of Aaron's old law school shirts to appear as casual as possible. By the time you heard his key in the lock, you were ready to meet him at the door with a smile.
“Hi, baby,” you purred in greeting, cupping Aaron's face in your hands and drawing him down for a sweet kiss. He practically melted into your touch, pressing his lips to yours between words of apology. “It’s okay, really,” you answered easily with a shrug. “We can just have what I made tomorrow!”
Aaron’s mouth turned downward at that, and you immediately criticized yourself for mentioning the meal at all. “Sweetheart-”
“Aar, baby, it was nothing,” you attempted to laugh it off, but his brows furrowed even deeper at your insistence.
“Why aren’t you upset? You should be upset.”
“Why?” you challenged in return, smoothing your hands along his arms even as your fear that he was trying to push you away reared its ugly head. “I know how difficult your job is. I don’t expect you to remember every little thing we talk about.”
“Y/N, no.” His voice was firm as he gripped your shoulders and dipped his head down to meet your gaze. “This wasn’t a little thing. Just… give me a minute and then we’ll talk.”
And now, here you are, hastily packing your bag and trying to make your escape before he returns to avoid having that dreaded conversation. The trite It's not you, it’s me and It’s for the best and You should be someone’s priority. Aaron had already sighed out the classic You deserve better before walking out the door.
You jump in surprise at the sound of Aaron’s voice rumbling over to you from the bedroom doorway. “Are we going somewhere?”
You look up at him and his heart breaks at the way your eyes are glistening in the dim light. “I thought I should spend a few days at my place. Give you some space to breathe.” And save you the hard part of saying we shouldn’t be together anymore.
His bags fall to the floor unceremoniously, and Aaron crosses the room in two short strides to cup your face in his hands, brows furrowed, eyes searching yours. “Why would I ever want to be apart from you when I don’t have to be?”
You gape at him in disbelief. “You don’t want me to leave?”
His answer is firm, resolute, a simple, “No.”
“And you’re not leaving me?”
“Absolutely not.” He sits on the edge of the bed and pulls you down beside him, tucking you into his broad chest. “I’m sorry I wasn’t clear when I left. I just went to get my things from the car, sweetheart.”
“I’m sorry for assuming the worst,” you whisper. Your voice is so small and fragile, and Aaron tightens his hold on you. “I just thought…”
“You’re used to people not sticking around?” You nod, his starched shirt brushing against your cheek with the movement.
Aaron pulls back a bit to tilt your chin up, his gaze soft yet determined as he looks into your eyes. “I love you, and I’m not going anywhere. You understand?” You nod again, and he dots kisses all over your face until your mouth turns up in a genuine smile. “You-” He takes a deep breath and pulls your hand into his lap, running his thumb over your knuckles before continuing, “You have made my life- and Jack’s- infinitely better, and I can’t picture our family without you now.”
You lift your joined hands to your mouth to press a kiss to the back of his hand. Then, hesitantly, you ask, “Aaron?”
“Hm?”
“Why did you get upset about me not getting upset?”
“Because you deserve the world, angel,” he answers firmly. “And you deserve better than the bullshit I pulled tonight. And…” He trails off, and you can feel the tension mounting in the rise of his shoulders. Placing your hand on his taut muscles, you rub it back and forth in a soothing pattern until he releases a breath and admits, “It reminded me of my marriage, when things started falling apart before the divorce. Haley had gotten so used to my absence or making work a priority that she would just excuse things. First it was little things, like not answering a text for hours.”
“Huh, you don’t say,” you interject, and Aaron’s gaze cuts over to you to find a cheeky smile on your face.
He nudges your shoulder with his own, muttering an apology before continuing, “Then it was bigger things. Holidays and trips and back to school nights. I even- I missed Jack’s first steps, y’know that? I was on a case, halfway across the country, and I didn’t see the video she sent me until days later.”
“Aaron,” you sigh, now tucking him into your chest. “Do you know what Jack’s going to remember? That you were always there when it counted. He’s going to remember the night you went out in the rain to find his special Darth Vader suit for Halloween, and the countless hours you and Dave put in to coach his soccer team to the championship, and the blanket forts and movie nights and walks in the park with ice cream dripping down our wrists until it’s an unsalvageable mess. You’re his hero, you big dummy.”
Aaron shifts until his head is in your lap, looking up at you with a small smile and glistening eyes. “How did we get here?”
“You gave me a key to your apartment and then missed our anniversary dinner.”
“Thank you, you sassy little thing.” He playfully tugs at your hair falling down from your shoulders and framing his face. “I mean, I was supposed to be apologizing and groveling at your feet for my transgressions, but here you are comforting me instead. You really do-”
“If you say deserve better, I’m going to beat you up, Aaron,” you threaten, although the smile on your face says otherwise.
He mimes zipping his lips, then twists his wrist around to glance at his watch. “It’s still our six month anniversary for another hour or so, and the apartment smells divine. You up for a late night meal?”
Leaning down, you nuzzle your nose against his before answering, “Deal. But I’m sitting pretty at the table and you’re serving me, Hotchner.”
“In just an apron and nothing else underneath?”
“Oh, hell yes,” you squeal in delight. “You’re in trouble now, baby. I’m going to milk this for all it’s worth.”
“As you should, my love. As you should.”

Hii<33 I'm the one who asked for requests lmao
So... I just had this thought and I can't shake it off </3
dbf!Hotch is having a bad time. Haley had been complaining about his schedule at work for a while, their love life wasn't going well, and Hotch starts to realize that he could feel something for his best friend's daughter. 👀
So when Haley tells him that she wants a divorce, (and to consider themselves divorced immediately, they just have to sign the paperwork) he doesn't have a place to live, and when his sweet, lovely, and caring best friend hears him, he suggests that he might move in with them for a while 👀 (Reader is happy that he's coming to live with them, even if she doesn't yet know why)
I really don't want to make this long (and I'm sorry ughh) but what about Hotch having a nightmare about losing Reader, but she somehow notices that he's not feeling well, and they sleep together?
You know, some flirt around the house and some fluffy and the end 🥹
Feel free to ignore this, I know it's a bit meh LMAO
would it be a sin?

It's bad timing. All of it is bad timing.
Fine, it could have been worse. The case was much like all the others, not one of the ones that wrenched Hotch's heart out of his chest and tore it into little pieces. Although maybe it would have been better if it had been one of those, seeing as the outcome of the day was the same.
"Get out. Me and Jack can't take this anymore."
"Haley, please, let's just talk about this. I'm not going to try and change your mind, but we need to talk about the details-"
"No, Aaron, get out. Just get out. And don't come back."
That gets Aaron's attention. Haley had kicked him out before, but never with the stipulation not to return. His wide brown eyes settle on her, assessing her.
"Haley... This is my house."
"God, you love throwing that back at me, don't you? If it's your house, why are you hardly ever in it? It's your house, but it's Jack's home. He didn't even recognize you when you came home."
"He was watching TV and called me by one of the characters' names. It's developmentally appropriate-"
"I'm filing for divorce, Aaron."
"Daddy?"
Jack walks into the room, clutching his teddy to his chest. He's in his blue astronaut pajamas.
"Can you read me a story before you go again?"
"I'm not going anywhere, buddy."
Jack's face lights up. "You mean... even two stories?"
Aaron grins. "Yeah. Even two."
Haley glares at him. "Actually, Jackers, daddy is leaving. He's gotta go."
Jack looks between his parents, clearly confused by their conflicting words.
"But he said-" Jack starts.
"Go to bed, Jack." Haley rubs her forehead.
"Haley, it's not even seven yet, let me-" Aaron takes a step towards Haley. She takes a step back and looks over at Jack.
"Bed, Jack. Now."
"But daddy's home."
Aaron's heart twists in his chest. He's always felt like the luckiest man alive to be the person that this sweet kid calls that, and the disappointment on Jack's features is sharper than any knife.
Haley shoots Aaron a look that says 'this is all your fault', and Aaron's stomach drops. Maybe he should have slept on the couch in his office. How could he expect Jack to handle this? The constant coming and going, the late nights, the missed soccer games...
"Okay. Alright buddy, I'll see you soon."
Jack's face crumples. "No story?"
Haley scoops Jack into her arms and starts walking towards his bedroom. She glances back over her shoulder and mouths 'out'.
And that's how Aaron finds himself back in his car much earlier than he'd expected to be. He scrolls through his contacts three times before he finds someone he feels okay about calling at dinnertime on a weeknight.
"Hey, Aaron. What's up?"
"God, I don't know where to start. Uh, so it looks like I might need a place to stay tonight. I'd book a hotel but with the concert tonight-"
"Fuck, man. Haley again? It's no trouble. I'm actually out of town for a few days, there's a conference in Dallas, you can stay in my bedroom."
"I'll sleep on the couch-"
"No, my kid's visiting this week, I think they'd prefer if you stay in another room."
"Oh, of course."
You, Aaron thinks. Lovely, intelligent, kind. Of course you're visiting your dad. Of course your dad forgot to block out the time to see you.
"Alright, you know where the spare key is. Let yourself in. Stay as long as you need, I'll be back Friday morning though. Hopefully Haley's cooled off by then."
Three days alone with you. Aaron feels guilty for intruding into your space like this, but he's just about out of options. There's a feeling low in his belly, hard to ignore and harder still to admit, but he pushes it down as far as he can.
He drums his fingers on the steering wheel and watches the streets pass. Soon enough, there's your house. He rings the doorbell as a courtesy, but eyes the potted plant that he knows has a hollow base.
"Oh! Mr. Hotchner."
"Hi, uh, I just called your dad-"
"He called me too. Come in," Your smile is inviting, if the way you swung the door wide open wasn't enough.
You turn on the kettle and take out two mugs, then tap the instant coffee and the box full of teabags in turn. Aaron nods towards the tea. You gesture for him to take a seat. He calls out from the living room.
"I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I know it's short notice."
"No, no. I only cancelled my birthday party."
Aaron winces. "Oh my god, please, I'll hide out in your dad's room."
You just smile and laugh easily. "I'm just kidding. I thought you knew my birthday wasn't for another few months."
Now that Aaron thinks about it, he did know that. Your birthday was closer to his than this time of year.
You bring out the two cups of tea, setting out a little plate of cookies.
"Have you eaten anything? You look like you're wasting away."
"Thanks," Aaron huffs a laugh. "A week of takeaways will do that to a person."
You look Aaron over. "Hmm. Strong Southern boy like you... How about some green bean casserole? It's just leftovers, but..."
The humility in your eyes, matched with your robust generosity, your effortless thoughtfulness, makes Aaron swoon.
"I can even sweeten the deal with some mashed potato."
He wonders how long it's been since you saw him last. Maybe a year? It's not often you're in town. And this is how you greet him.
"If it's not too much trouble."
You shrug.
"Be trouble. It sounds like you've had a rough day."
Aaron sighs. So your dad told you.
"Jack looked so sad. Haley is, well. I understand that I'm not enough for her, but my son... I should be there for him. He needs a father."
"You are there for him," You cock your head.
"Not enough."
"If Haley isn't capable of parenting him on her own, she shouldn't have settled down with you."
Your tone is cool, but you're not saying it to be cruel. Hotch knows you're right. Haley knew what she was getting into.
"Anyway. You probably don't want to talk about it."
Aaron nods. "Your life is probably much more interesting than mine."
You shrug. "Trying to find the right combination of work and play. Much the same as yours."
Your lives couldn't be more different, but Aaron sees what you mean. You understand.
You finish the last of your tea with one large gulp and head for the kitchen to heat up some dinner for Aaron.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Aaron can't hold back. His heart is full from your conversation, and the food you'd given him sits warmly in his belly. He knows this room shares a wall with the guest bedroom, where you're sleeping, so he bites the fist of his right hand while his left hand is... occupied.
A grunt slips from his lips, and he can't help it, it sounds like the first syllable of your name. He scrunches his eyes shut, ceasing his movements. He waits for you to bang on the wall, or to knock on his door, but nothing comes.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Three nights pass that way.
You used earplugs on the first night, but your curiosity and desire dissolve your ethics. He's breathy, a practiced quiet from nights in hotel rooms beside his colleagues. They could almost be the breaths of sleep, but they come slightly too quick, slightly too sharp.
[Aaron wonders why you haven't said anything. He's not exactly trying to be loud, but...]
The thought of your mouth on him makes you feel electric. You bite your lip, willing your mind to think of anything else. This is completely inappropriate. You'd hate to make him uncomfortable. It feels like a violation of privacy.
Later that night, Aaron bursts into your room, trembling. He's been sleeping in a pair of sweatpants, shirtless.
You blink slowly, willing the heavy sleep from your limbs.
"Aaron?"
He takes a seat on the side of your bed.
"I'm sorry, I know it's the middle of the night-"
You shake your head. "Is everything okay?"
He rests his hand over your own.
You lift the covers, the same way you've always done for friends, close family. You pat the bed beside you and he slips in. You sit hip to hip with your backs pressed against the wall behind you. To stay warm, you keep the covers pulled up to your chest.
"Haley's going to leave me."
"It's a hard situation-"
Aaron shakes his head, cutting you off.
"Haley's going to leave me, and instead of dreaming about her, I was dreaming about you."
He can't look you in the eyes, instead staring at the foot of the bed.
"What did you dream about?"
"Psychologically, it would be sensible to dream about losing her. But we were on this ship, and there was all of this swell, and a wave came, and I couldn't save you. You were just swept right off the deck and I couldn't save you."
"Hey," You coo. "You're okay. I'm okay." You wrap your arms around him. "I'm right here."
"You're important to me," He breathes. "I didn't realize it until now, but-"
He turns to face you, and you realize too late that your faces are very, very close together. He glances at your lips, then back up at your eyes.
"Aaron," You breathe.
"Kiss me?" His voice is soft from sleep, but there's a plea in his eyes.
You shake your head. "I don't want to take advantage of you."
He smiles. "Take advantage of me? When I came into your bedroom in the middle of the night?"
"Okay, okay. And you're older, and more experienced, and whatever. But you're tired. I can see it in you. And you just had a nightmare."
You run your index finger over the creases in his brow.
"What does it mean, that the dream was about you?"
A more conscious Aaron would have known the answer, but he's exhausted, sleep-deprived. Without his typical routine, his kitchen, his suits lined up by colour. He's missing his armour.
"Think about it in the morning."
"Can I stay?"
You run your fingers through his short hair. You'd daydreamed of this moment for years. All of your logic is telling you that it's not a good time, he's not in his right mind, he has a room he can easily go back to, and he's still married. The golden band is still on his finger. He sees you seeing it.
He slips it off, letting it clatter on your bedside table.
"Don't let her make the decision."
"So, stay."
Aaron gestures for you to lie down, and you do. He lies down on his back and you move to rest your head on his chest. You drape one of your legs over his own.
"I'm not going to be a rebound."
"I wouldn't let you. You wouldn't let yourself."
You nod.
"Try to get some sleep. God knows you need it."
Aaron nods.
You count the glow in the dark stars that glow on the ceiling. You count again, and again, waiting to wake up. The sun rises before you do.
When your father walks into his bedroom the next morning and finds it empty, the sheets rumpled, he's confused. Aaron isn't the type to leave a bed unmade.
He pushes the door to the guest bedroom open slowly, just enough to see inside. You're in bed, which he expected. What he didn't expect was seeing his best friend beside you. You're both still asleep, curled around each other like you've known each other all your lives. Your dad supposes you have known Aaron all your life, and he's known you all of yours.
He expects anger to well up inside him, or betrayal, or grief. But seeing your bodies entangled in the sheets, he only feels peace. You fit together like this is what you were made for. Your dad smiles and closes the door gently.

Whenever Aaron is away on a case you all miss him dearly just as he misses you. He does his best to keep in contact with you throughout his day and then before the kiddos go to bed he tries to make sure he can facetime you all before they go to sleep.
The little Hotchner bugs are always excited when they get to see their dad even if it's only over a video call. He still manages to make it fun for all of you even if he can't actually be there. It's always a nice way to end his day. It's more than just missing you all but he also needs to make sure his little family is okay. Especially if it's a case involving kids. He always calls more when children are involved.
"Daddy's calling! Answer it answer it!" Your little girl is yelling excitedly when Aaron's contact pops up and you immediately press the answer button. When his face shows on the screen you smile and wave at him before the little Hotchner bugs steal the device from you, not that you mind.
"Daddy! Look look! I made this for you for when you come back home!" Little girl Hotchner holds up a drawing she had made earlier that day. It's the four of you, or at least it's supposed to be. It's really just four colourful blobs. One is you, another is Aaron, and the other two are her and Jack.
"And I made this for you in school!" Jack shows Aaron his own art piece which is definitely easier to make out but both are equally loved by you and Aaron.
"Those are both beautiful! They should be in an art museum." Aaron smiles big and it warms your heart.
You all tell Aaron about how your day went and he listens with that same grin as his little bugs ramble on and on happily. Jack's sister tends to go off topic more often than not but Aaron doesn't mind. Neither of you do. He's just happy to hear their voices and see their faces.
"Daddy what happened! You look like a kitty!" Your little girl exclaims when the face of an animated cat covers Aaron's and moves when he turns his head or talks. You're giggling as he talks to them and pretends not to know what they're talking about. Then it turns to a dog and Jack laughs as your little girl gets a confused, but joyful expression on her face.
"Daddy, can you do a T-rex? Please?" Jack asked as he looks at the screen in front of you all.
"Oh no. What's that sound?" You can hear what you think is Aaron imitating a dinosaur and then the dog face goes away and is replaced by Jack's request.
"Rawr!" All three of you giggle when you see it and you hear Aaron's big laugh come through the speaker and your heart flutters at the sound. You miss him but you understand he can't be there as much as you all wish he could and that's why you always make as much time for things like this as you all can when he's away. It's important to all of you that you spend time together even if it's just a video call. It's still special to all of you.
Eventually you have to end the call because the little loves need to go to sleep, everyone is disappointed and they both bed for five more minutes. Of course you give in. They miss Aaron and you won't deny them that time with him as long as it's not insanely late and as long as he doesn't need to leave so he can work.
After the five minutes is up, Aaron tells them it's time for bed and they both frown but nod in understanding.
"I miss you all and I love you. I want you both to be good for your mother, okay? I should be home in a couple of days and then we can do whatever you want. How does that sound?" He smiles at the end and they both cheer up and nod eagerly.
After you all say goodbye and hang up you don't get them ready to go to sleep right away. Instead you all make a little video telling Aaron you love him and saying good night then send it to him. You know he feels a little down when you have to end the call and you want him to have something to bring his spirits up a little bit.
That's when you finally get the Hotchner babes ready and give them their nightly forehead kiss good night. You always give them both two kisses each when Aaron is away. One from you and one from him. Which they both return to you. One for you and one for their dad.
It's hard to be away from Aaron but you know it's even harder for him. When he's away you still have the little ones. It always makes you sad so you're constantly sending him photos and videos of you and your sweethearts so he still has some of the feeling of being home. It helps him get through those rough cases and he saves every single memory you send him.
When he finally gets home he's been so kept up with everything from the calls and messages that it almost feels like he wasn't even away. You make sure to keep him well informed on all three of you so he doesn't feel like he's missing out as much and he's incredibly grateful to you for it.

How about Hotch who rejects reader once they confess their feelings? But later on he comes to the realization he actually loves the reader!!! And he tries to win her back?? I know you’d write this so well 🥹
→ hi lovely anon, I love this idea! I wrote this with a shy reader who works in the BAU but is not a profiler/agent, I hope you enjoy <3
cw: mentions of being insecure and self-doubt, angst and pain, Aaron's father is mentioned
Aaron Hotchner x shy!female reader
Time and Tide
A Lifetime
That's how long you’ve been a shy, out-of-the-way, quiet creature. You’re a diligent and skillful worker, but socially awkward and prefer to keep to yourself. You’re often unsure of what to say to strike up or even maintain a casual conversation. But your Unit Chief makes it easy. Your first year working with the FBI has been rocky but Hotch has been the most supportive and compassionate boss you’ve ever had. He is welcoming, always lending a listening ear, offering you advice and standing up for you. You quickly learn that he is an advocate for every member of his team and not just the few agents he works with on a daily basis. You find yourself admiring him from afar, daydreaming about him, and committing all of your interactions to memory.
A Year
That's how long it takes for you to build up the courage to say something to him. Having now established some semblance of a friendly working relationship, you decide to make your move. That move is to reciprocate his kind gestures for once instead of crumbling at the mere sight of him and fleeing from the scene. And it works.
You develop this tradition after cases where, after the official debrief with the team, Hotch has another, more intimate debrief with you. Your presence is a calming force, a sense of serenity he craves daily. He usually sits in his chair while you wrap up your work for the day in his office, often times you’re the one talking - about your day, the work you did, the latest office gossip, and the new boots you're saving up for. You’ve become truly comfortable in his presence, and he basks in it. Sometimes he’ll indulge you in his day-to-day with his son or a story from his days as a prosecutor. You listen eagerly, with an open heart, ready for the taking. You’ve fallen hopelessly in love with him and worry if the feelings will ever be reciprocated.
An almost fatal injury suffered on a case is what pushes you over the edge. The thought of losing something that was never yours to begin with breaks your eager heart.
A Month
That's how long you spend skirting around the words that occupy the majority of your brain space. For an entire month, you show up at his doorstep, food in hand, always offering him some company. More often than not, he takes you up on the offer. Your traditional post-case debrief sessions are now spent within the confines of his home.  Aside from the physical pain in his body from his injuries and the emotional pain in your heart from loving him, nothing much has changed.
One Day
One day you finally make your move. Sitting side by side on his couch, eating tortilla chips, watching some documentary he’s been raving about all week. You turn away from the TV screen to face him.
“Aaron, I-I like you.”
He chuckles lightly in response, and a slightly confused look sits across his face, “thank you, I like you too, Y/N.”
“No, Aaron I like you more than a friend, I...I have feelings for you.”
The silence that follows your confession suffices. He shifts uncomfortably in his seat, shoulders tense, jaw set tight. The energy in the room has shifted and you suddenly feel like an intruder in his home.
“Y/N…..that’s not going to work.”
That's all he manages to say before standing from his spot on the couch, awkwardly eyeing the door.
You lift your jaw off the ground and clear your throat, “I’ll see myself out.”
If you could have one wish, it would be for the ground beneath you to open up and swallow you whole. His rejection stings worse than any embarrassing scenario your mind could ever conjure. You feel the familiar thoughts of self-doubt and disgust begin to swarm your mind.
⋯⋯⋯⋯⊱⊰⋯⋯⋯⋯
You keep your head down at work, slowly reverting to your old shy and insecure self; you hate it. So when an FBI tech named James begins to hang out at your desk and bring you coffee every morning, you welcome it. You view it as a chance to rebuild yourself, to rid yourself of this heartbreak over a man that was never yours. And James is good to you, he’s sweet, doting, and totally enamoured with your being. You allow yourself to get comfortable, and receive love for once. And it feels good.
Hotch has made it a point to maintain his distance from you ever since your confession. That hurts worse than the rejection itself. He never looks in your direction, never speaks your name, and never makes any direct contact with you at all. It's like you never existed.
So when he stops by your desk one evening to extend a personal invite to the team’s Christmas dinner, you’re stunned and speechless.
“You haven’t spoken to me in nearly a year,” your words are a soft whisper, spoken mostly to yourself, but he hears you.
“That’s not true-”
“It is, Aaron. You always push people away, I never thought you’d do it to me.”
When he looks into your eyes, he immediately regrets it. The memory of your friendship comes back to him in a rush, the stories you two shared back and forth, the time you spent in his office to keep him company, all the words of advice he’d offered, the 30 consecutive days you'd shown up at his doorstep with warm home-cooked meals. All of that was your testament of love, and he threw it all away without giving you a chance.
Aaron doesn’t say anything in response. He trudges back into his office, only looking back once, desperately hoping to catch you looking back at him. Instead, he’s met with the sight of your boyfriend kissing your cheek and gathering your things to go home for the night. Your hand slips perfectly into his and the two of you walk out together.
The sight of you walking off with another man brings back a bitter memory of his father and a phrase he would often scold him with.
"time and tide wait for no man"

Aaron Hotchner getting his first ever Valentines day gift from r 🥹 he's taken aback, because he's not used to getting things and being loved so openly
Lovely request anon, thank you for sending this one in and sending you all the Valentine's kisses 💗 enjoy!
You’re both running late for work; Aaron is fastening his tie, getting his cufflinks on, while you’re smoothing out your skirt and putting on your courthouse shoes. You grab your briefcase, lipstick and perfume, nearly tripping over each other as your paths cross.
Thankfully, Aaron is there to catch you; one hand on your back and another on your ass, as he hums appreciatively at the way your skirt leaves a very flattering impression in the mirror.
“You’ll be late if you don’t let go,” you warn, practically ready to sprint towards the car.
Aaron doesn’t seem to be bothered at the prospect anymore, eyes cast downwards towards your white shirt—also tight and rather delicate.
At this, you remember that you had something you wanted to give him.
“Actually,” you say, reaching into your bag and handing him a small, velvet blue box. “I have an early gift for you.”
Aaron takes it in his hand, suddenly confused. “You never told me you were bad at remembering birthdays.”
You laugh at his snarky reply, playfully tugging on his tie. “No, silly. I know exactly when your birthday is and I know when I owe my boyfriend a Valentine’s Day gift. I know it’s not until tomorrow, but my murder senses are tingling and something tells me you’ll be flying off somewhere far away on a new case tonight.”
Aaron doesn’t respond, stares at the box some more and you realise that he might be nervous about what it is.
“You can open it now, if you want? Or tomorrow, it’s your choice, baby.”
“I have a gift scheduled to be delivered to you tomorrow,” Aaron finally responds and looks back at you with soft eyes. There’s something else, there, too—a warm, almost moved, expression of disbelief. “I wasn’t expecting you to get me anything.”
“What do you mean, you weren’t expecting me to get you anything? It’s Valentine’s Day and you are my gorgeous boyfriend.”
“Yes, well, I’ve… never really been in a relationship where I’ve gotten a Valentine’s Day gift before.” It’s a frank admission, which makes your heart hurt a little. You try not to linger on the subject, giving him an encouraging smile instead.
“Well, then I think you should open it now so I can be a part of this extra special moment with you.”
He smiles to himself, opens the box and is left speechless for a few seconds. “I… baby, where did you get this?”
“Oh, there’s this watchmaker I know that restores these beautiful vintage watches, but they like adding their own little twists to the restored pieces. The leather strap is all new, but the gold case is kept from the original. Do you like it? I thought you needed something a bit more lowkey, but still you, for our vacation days.”
“I love it, really, thank you so much. You want to go on vacation?” Aaron’s eyes sparkle a little at the suggestion. You haven’t yet discussed this topic before, but things are getting serious and something tells you Aaron is very, very down for the idea.
“Let’s save that conversation for date night, because we have gone from almost late, to very late. I love you,” you drag him in for a kiss, nipping and murmuring sweet promises for later, stretching it out for a few luxurious moments before the rest of the day starts.
