slept for abt 90 minutes last night and its 8am and i have showered and braided this bodys hair and my brain feels augmented (in the lesser meaning of the word) and not the normal kind of bad, and at around 6am we realized (again, but that's fine, a hundred thousand times) how deeply art and music are the things that shape our perception of everything, absolutely everything right down to our place in the stupid universe and our interactions in the world. it's so weird that i forget that.

Medical Training (6/29) | MiaChanel Nguyen (UCI)
After spending the morning at dental training, I was super excited to meet the rest of the 15Gers and providers at medical training! As soon as I entered the training room, I immediately noticed someone playing Brawl Stars - as a fellow Brawl Stars addict, I can’t wait to brawl in Vietnam during our free time...
We rotated through different stations with our teams: the first for Psyduck was pharmacy. I had a little bonding moment with the pharmacist at the station since we have the same Vietnamese name (Thùy Linh) - we’re now Thùy Linh twins! Next, we practiced our Vietnamese with Hayley, and our team members were able to quickly pick up some words: the easiest being “bác sĩ” for “doctor”. Then, we reviewed CPR with Dr. Thao and performed an EKG with Dr. Âu Cơ.
Tumblr media
Above: Our Psyduck leader, Bao, focused on performing high quality CPR on the mannequin. Look at Hallie and Mira's shock at Bao's super strength!
Tumblr media
Above: Dylan working hard at placing the EKG leads in the correct location!
I really enjoyed learning from pediatricians Dr. Phung and Dr. Hseih about breastfeeding and the diagnostic power of ultrasounds. I thought it was so funny that Dr. Phung brought a little boob plushie to demonstrate breast pump use. The warm and enthusiastic energy from all the providers increased my anticipation for the trip since I now looked forward to bonding with and learning more from them. I also met a couple of the provider’s children; I found out that Emma and I share a mutual who's one of my closest friends! The SoCal Vietnamese community sure is small. We also practiced measuring vitals on each other - my finger was sacrificed for blood glucose & cholesterol. I have a couple of holes in them now, but all for a good cause!

Above: Thank you, Hallie for measuring my blood pressure!

For their latest video, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down turn a homemade film into 'Pure Cinema.'
Uniting while in lockdown, the clip gives added weight to Thao Nguyen's poignant words as she reflects on her past and present self atop a mellow sprawl ('I was once a shell/You could turn as well/Who do we think we are?/Live a little').
Nguyen explains about the track (via Under The Radar):
‘Pure Cinema’ is about taking stock of how adrift I’ve been, in every sense of the word. It’s very easy to feel lost and alone even as you are surrounded by people. I’ve had a very compromised relationship to touring over the years. if you’re not right with yourself it is only going to be exaggerated as you cast yourself out into the world. I’ve floated above my life for a long time; I’ve landed now. It makes me so happy to see my bandmates settled and happy in their own homes and lives, as I am in mine. ‘Pure Cinema’ is a cautionary tale and also an encouragement to keep faith and keep building home and family.’
While she adds about the clip:
‘‘Pure Cinema’ is such full band song, and it has so much to do with our years of touring as a roving family constellation, that I really wanted this video to highlight and celebrate The Get Down Stay Down. However much of a fraction I have been out there over the years, our band and crew kept me as safe and sane as was possible. They have been my stabilizing force for so long. As it goes with family I don’t know if I’ve ever truly thanked them or told them. It was so sweet and also quite bittersweet to see everyone at home, projected into our home. I don’t know when we can play shows together again, I don’t know what touring will look like. I miss the band.’
Thao & The Get Down Stay Down’s Temple is out now.

Thao Nguyen Doesn’t Stay Down
Oct 8, 2020

When I first listened to the title track off Thao & the Get Down Stay Down’s fifth album, Temple, I immediately hit repeat. After I finished listening to it the second time, I hit repeat again. And then again. And then again. I had a teenage urge to learn all the lyrics, so I could sing along at the top of my voice while cruising down the road. The song describes the pain of losing a home to war, an experience many of us haven’t lived through in America, and yet I still felt a deep personal connection with the song’s powerful message. Perhaps because this country is currently facing such extreme civil unrest, so the thought of experiencing war firsthand is increasingly becoming more real. But the song also touches on the turmoil we can sometimes feel in our own family lives as well. Thao Nguyen seems to be a master at crafting albums that exquisitely make complicated and painful matters a bit easier to bear.
Thao recently won a Sunny Award by CBS Sunday Morning (my most favorite of all morning shows) for the music video to her song “Phenom.” Not only is the video wildly creative and entertaining, it conveys an intergenerational rage that’s finally being collectively realized. It’s the rage of someone who has discovered it’s okay to feel sick of constantly being at the bottom of the ladder, and the message should strike fear in the hearts of corrupt politicians everywhere.
As if a timeless and timely new album and an award winning music video weren’t enough, I was triply astounded after watching the documentary Nobody Dies (available to stream Sat., Oct. 10), which follows Thao on a journey with her mom to Vietnam. The trip was Thao’s first visit to Vietnam, and her mom’s first time back since fleeing the country in 1973. It was a chance for Thao to see her mother in an environment where she wasn’t defined by being a refugee, as she often is in America. In both the documentary and the album, Thao paints a picture we don’t often see in American popular culture: the perspective of a child whose parents have lived through and escaped war.
Mossy: I watched your documentary, and it was such a beautiful tribute to your mom. Is there anything about your mother’s life and experiences that really stand out for you, that you think Americans could learn from?
TN: When I wrote Temple, it was because I wanted to offer a different narrative and rendering of someone who experienced war, and the idea of what a refugee is. And obviously in recent years, maybe throughout American history, how refugees have been reduced and the narrative that has been relayed. I think it’s really important to remember that there’s a distinction between an immigrant and a refugee. And also that someone is not just defined by this war that happened to them and their country. I think that’s why Temple was so important for me. I really wanted to capture my mom’s life before, after, and during; and just help enrich that community. I was raised in Virginia, and growing up, it was so stark the way people treated (refugees). I think that parents that are refugees or immigrants witness a lot of incredibly unfortunate encounters, where their dignity is dismissed. You watch your parents be dehumanized in either casual ways, or really serious ways. So this was one of my efforts to address and make peace with that.
Mossy: When I was watching your documentary I found myself smiling. And then I got to the story about your dad and I just started bawling. What parallels do you see between your father and the patriarchy at large?
TN: That’s an interesting question. My record before this one was about my dad. It’s called A Man Alive, and it’s just about our nonexistent relationship and all the bullshit. But what I started to understand when I was making that record, was just a facet of what it is to be emasculated in American society. And what that means for the families of the men who are emasculated. And I think that you see that a lot, especially in immigrant and refugee homes. And others, I mean, I’m only speaking from my experience. But what does a man do to assert power when he feels as though he’s denied power in society? I think it becomes a really personal and intimate, familial problem. And you know, it helps me understand his experience and what unresolved trauma that basically debilitates him, and renders him an irresponsible, reckless person. Patriarchy in general…I do think so much of it is people not knowing how to grapple with the expectations of masculinity. I could go on. (Laughs) I’ll just say it’s so detrimental in every direction, because if you’re not masculine enough, you will pay and then someone else will pay. And if you feel as though you’re  not respected enough, then the ways that men feel pressured to illicit that respect in our society is so deadly.
Mossy: You said in the documentary that when you went back to Vietnam, it helped you understand your dad’s temperament. That you understood it…but you didn’t. It’s like saying, “I do understand where you’re coming from and I empathize, but I don’t accept how you’re treating me because of it.” Which I feel is kind of where true healing from trauma can begin. How else do you deal with trauma?
TN: Well there have been different waves of awareness and lack of awareness of what I needed to be doing. I mean, I’ve done the typical things like drinking. (Laughs) I think touring helped. I’ve spent the majority of my adult life on tour, and it’s a refuge. But it also allows you to not deal with anything for a really long time. You could go your whole life without dealing with things. Of course, songwriting and making music. And really wanting to go there lyrically by being more specific with lyrics. Okay, and then therapy. But as far as music is concerned, I think it’s been really helpful to have these songs and talk about them, even under the auspice of promotion. But it’s also just connecting with people and talking about the songs. These levels of vulnerability make for a lot more humane experience. When we play live shows , if people get a chance, they’ll come up and tell me what a song has meant. And it really is so heartening and gratifying, and part of the healing.
Mossy: So you’re saying drinking didn’t work?!
TN: (Laughs) I still do it, so I’m not saying it doesn’t. Just don’t go crazy!
Tumblr media
Mossy: You have such a wonderful vocabulary, so I’m guessing you like to read. Who are you favorite authors?
TN: Thanks for saying that. Writing and reading favorite authors are how I prepare the albums and the songs. And when I’m writing songs, I never listen to music, and I only read. But I love, oh man, I grew up reading Toni Morrison and her way with language and the vivid pictures she paints and the way she renders people. Grace Paley is another writer who’s style I love. Marilynne Robinson. George Saunders. I typically am drawn to contemporary literature. And now there’s a lot of reading to be done to learn about how America has become what it is. And to that end, Octavia Butler and James Baldwin really influenced the writing of this record.
Mossy: So you’re like Kurt Cobain over here, writing songs inspired by literature.
TN: (Laughs) I wish I had a cool sweater.
Mossy: Ah, he had the best sweaters.
TN: He had the best sweaters.
Mossy: I saw on your Instagram that you support women prisoners and Critical Resistance. Why are you specifically interested in these causes?
TN: With the California Coalition of Women Prisoners, I’ve been involved with them since 2013. Originally it was because a housemate of mine was an amazing organizer, and has been with them for years. And I was home from tour for awhile and he asked me to join this advocacy group, where we went in to prisons and visited, and we were part of a legal advocacy team. So the album, We the Common is entirely about and in tribute to these people who live inside, and this organization.
Mossy: Do you need to have a law degree to do that? I wanna do that!
TN: (Laughs) You totally can! No you don’t have to have a law degree. So the people like my friend…they don’t officially have a law degree. They just know so much about the system, because they’re constantly trying to help people figure out their parole, and how to get their face back in front of a judge. So we went in conjunction with a lawyer. We were just a team that was basically working with a pro-bono lawyer.
Mossy: You mentioned connection and live performance in your documentary. How do you think the musical performance landscape is going to change since the pandemic?
TN: I don’t know what’s going to happen to the venues as they exist now. I don’t know what kind of modifications or concessions they’ll have to make. So I do think that there will be more unconventional and nontraditional venues that come up by the time we’re ready for crowds to gather. And I think there will be more multi-use spaces and art institutions and contemporary art museums. More of those kind of hybrid events. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the rock clubs. It’s so sad. But I do think that we were barreling towards a reckoning. And I liken the music industry to the restaurant industry in a lot of ways…how thin the margin is for survival. And I think people will play smaller shows, because they can happen more quickly. And I think there’s going to be a lot more direct to fan engagement. And those who have a preexisting fan base will lean more into those fans, and be less concerned with expanding.
Mossy: It’s almost like what’s happening in the music industry is symbolic of what needs to happen everywhere. More localizing and community building.
TN: Totally. And I think Bandcamp is going to take an even stronger role as leaders of a more ethical model. I think what’s happening right now with streaming services is, ah, (laughs) unbearable.

Fears for prisoner of conscience after death threat
Human rights defender Tran Thi Nga recently told her husband in a hurried phone call that she had been brutally beaten up and has received a death threats by another inmate. After a previous call with her family, it appears that the attacks have been orchestrated by prison authorities to punish her. Detained for more than 18 months, Tran Thi Nga is a prisoner of conscience and must be immediately and unconditionally released. Trần Thị Nga, also known by her nickname “Thúy Nga”, told her husband that she has recently been beaten up and has faced death threats by other inmates during a five-minute conversation on 17 August 2018. Only allowed one phone call with her family per month, Trần Thị Nga had said to her family in July that she was being held in the same prison cell as a prisoner notorious for helping prison guards intimidate and beat-up other prisoners. Her husband has shared his grave concern for her safety as their connection was abruptly cut off when she tried to report her condition in prison. Her final words to him were “I have been often beaten and they recently threatened to kill me”.
TAKE ACTION NOW
Please write immediately in Vietnamese, English or your own language, calling Viet Nam’s authorities to:
Release Trần Thị Nga immediately and unconditionally, as she is a prisoner of conscience detained solely for peacefully exercising her rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly;
Ensure that pending her release, she is protected from torture and other ill-treatment, and all allegations are effectively investigated impartially and independently and those responsible are brought to account;
End prison transfers as a punitive measure and ensure that Trần Thị Nga has regular access to her family and lawyer of her choice, as well as to the adequate medical care she may require.

Batzorig Vaanchig and Latvian bagpipers, hang on, it's fantastic
Tumblr media
Batzorig Vaanchig throat sings his way into the show with Latvian bagpipers. Interested? We thought you would be! Spike from The Bearded Pig Forge recommended this one and what an excellent and rewarding listen it is. Mongolian throat singing with Latvian bagpipes. As Tobin says, please don't hit the off-switch, this is good. Real good. The Lovemongers give us an epic cover of a Led Zeppelin classic. In stark contrast to Batzorig Vaanchig, it is no less vocally splendid. Obviously it's completely different and more recognisable, but a fantastic vocal celebration nonetheless. As ever we've got New Music and much more besides. Secondly, Richard introduces us to his virtual friend and artist extraordinaire Carly Strauss. It's a full show so let's dive straight in. Where They Do Not Know My Name Bad LiversSwimming Pools Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay DownHunnu Guren Batzorig Vaanchig & AULIYou Decided Mia BergBattle of Evermore The LovemongersHe Don't Love Me Winona OakShot at a Bird, Hit Me a Stump Bad Livers Batzorig Vaanchig and AULI hook up Despite starring on the soundtrack to Netflix's landmark series Marco Polo, Batzorig Vaanchig also found time to collaborate with AULI. AULI are the Latvian bagpipe and drum outfit featured on Hunnu Guren. AULI had undertaken research into ancient singing techniques and this brought Batzorig Vaanchig firmly onto their radar. Just two members of AULI travelled to Mongolia in 2018 to meet Batzorig. They recorded three songs featuring Batzorig Vaanchig on the stringed instrument Morin Khuur whilst they were there. The tracks were further adjusted to suit the sound of the bagpipes and AULI further worked upon this on their return to Latvia. In March 2018 the whole band traveled to Mongolia to record the video for Hunnu Guren. The destination was the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. Meet Carly Strauss We've all done it. We've followed back an account on Facebook or Instagram and after time that follow back proves to be a very interesting ride indeed. Well Richard's new virtual friend is Carly Strauss, amazing artist, teacher, apparel designer and consistent Instagrammer. Add her cameo appearance on Savannah Pope's excellent Rock 'n' Roll No More music video and her educational merits and you've got a gorgeous human being on your hands. Carly's artwork is really a firm favourite here at Record Box HQ. Carly's artwork is also for sale! We're still deciding here which to go for, go take a look yourself. It's one of Carly's pieces that is the featured image for this post. However, not all her work is of the same vein. In fact, her work is incredibly diverse. Shame she's not a musician. Well she's not admitted to being one anyhow. Carly very generously offered us an invite to her recent exhibition in Los Angeles but being UK based we couldn't make it unfortunately. More's the pity, we are massive fans of her work and relished the opportunity, however difficult it was. Thanks Carly.

From Szu-Han Ho:
“this has been such an intense, exhilarating, beautiful, difficult week. MIGRANT SONGS took the stage at Revolutions Theatre Fest this past thurs and fri, and i’m still wordless to describe how i feel. i am only now really seeing the piece in full from the outside through all of your posts, and it is surreal to see the images of something that felt very uncertain for such a long time. more images are to come, this is just an initial taste of what we collectively experienced
• • • • •
all this has happened while migrants are being detained *under a bridge overpass in cages and makeshift camps* at the El Paso crossing: activists are trying to throw tarps and sleeping bags over the fence so families can cover themselves from the pigeon shit falling on them from above. this is the REAL state of things right now, and the manufactured crisis is still unfolding. from my statement about MIGRANT SONGS: “Migration and displacement come in many forms, and does not simply begin/end with border walls and checkpoints at nation-state boundaries. These walls and checkpoints are being built on stolen lands…lands on which migration of both humans and non-humans has been part of the story for millenia. I believe that the real crisis in this country occurs when we allow some to create a fear of others, and the state-sanctioned violence happening as a result and in parallel...”
Thank you to the interviewees who generously shared their stories: Flora María Gutierrez, Isabell Solis, Jennifer Zafra, Khadija Al Alwan, Maggie Kentilitisca, Margarita Copas, Martha Gamboa, Msambya-Amisi Eboko, Razia Ayab, Samia Assed, Selene Vences-Ortiz, Sumaya Almansur, Sylvester Niyongira, Thao Nguyen, Tiba Abdul Jabbar, Zahra Ishaq, and others who wished to remain unnamed.

Vietnam: Activists held incommunicado may face life in prison
Three Vietnamese activists, Trương Minh Đức, Nguyễn Trung Tôn, and Phạm Văn Trội, are being held incommunicado at B14 prison in Hà Nội after their arrests on 30 July 2017. They have a range of pre-existing health conditions that require treatment and face a sentence of up to life imprisonment or capital punishment.
Trương Minh Đức, Nguyễn Trung Tôn, and Phạm Văn Trội are members of the Brotherhood for Democracy, a group formed by human rights lawyer Nguyễn Văn Đài in 2013 to peacefully advocate for democracy in Viet Nam. They were arrested separately on 30 July 2017 and are accused of "carrying out activities aimed at overthrowing the People's Administration" under Article 79 of the 1999 Penal Code. The vaguely-worded offence, which falls under the overbroad "national security" section of the Code, provides for a sentence of up to life imprisonment or capital punishment.
All three men suffer from pre-existing health conditions that require access to medication and medical care. Trương Minh Đức has a heart disease and high blood pressure. Following a stroke in mid-May, he needs daily access to a number of medications in order to safely control his condition and help prevent another stroke or a heart attack. Nguyễn Trung Tôn suffers from kidney and prostate problems for which he takes medication. In addition, he has badly injured knees after he was abducted and beaten by unknown men in February 2017. Phạm Văn Trội has stomach ulcers for which he takes medication. Although their wives have attempted to pass on medicine via prison authorities, they are unsure whether it has been delivered, since they have not been able to visit their husbands.
Incommunicado detention can facilitate torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and when prolonged can itself amount to such practices under international human rights law and standards. In addition, the right to promptly communicate with a lawyer and prepare a defence is an essential part of the right to a fair trial.
Please write immediately in Vietnamese, English, or your own language urging Vietnamese authorities to:
Release Trương Minh Đức, Nguyễn Trung Tôn, and Phạm Văn Trội immediately and unconditionally as they have been deprived of their liberty solely for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and association;
Pending their release, ensure that they are protected from torture and other ill-treatment and are allowed access to their family, a lawyer of their choice, and adequate medical care; and
Ensure an immediate end to the arbitrary arrests and harassment of members of the Brotherhood for Democracy and other activists who peacefully express their views.
PLEASE SEND APPEALS BEFORE 20 OCTOBER 2017 TO: Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc Prime Minister’s Office Hà Nội, Việt Nam Email: [email protected] Salutation: Your Excellency
Minister of Public Security To Lam 44 Yết Kiêu St. Hoàn Kiếm District Hà Nội, Việt Nam Fax: + 844 3823 1872 c/o Ministry of Foreign Affairs Email: [email protected] Salutation: Dear Minister
And copies to: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Bình Minh Ministry of Foreign Affairs 1 Ton That Dam Street, Ba Dinh district Hà Nội, Việt Nam Fax: + 844 3823 1872
Also send copies to diplomatic representatives accredited to your country. HIS EXCELLENCY MR THAO VAN NGUYEN, Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, 12-14 Victoria Road W8 5RD, 020 7937 1912, Fax 020 7565 3853, [email protected], www.vietnamembassy.org.uk
Please check with your section office if sending appeals after the above date. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION On the morning of 30 July 2017, Trương Minh Đức and his wife were stopped on a street in Ho Chi Minh City by Vietnamese officials in plain clothes and forcibly escorted to a local police station where an arrest warrant was read. The same morning Phạm Văn Trội and Nguyễn Trung Tôn were arrested by police at their homes in Hà Nội and Thanh Hoa province, respectively, where arrest warrants were also read out. A fourth individual, Nguyễn Bắc Truyển, was forcibly disappeared on the same morning (see https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/asa41/6964/2017/en/ for further information). According to State-run media, all four men are alleged to have connections to human rights lawyer Nguyễn Văn Đài who was himself arrested in Hà Nội on 16 December 2015 and, along with his colleague Le Thu Ha, is charged with "committing propaganda" against the State under Article 88 of the Penal Code and "carrying out activities aimed at overthrowing the People's Administration" under Article 79.
Trương Minh Đức is a former journalist and prisoner of conscience. Prior to his arrest he worked as an administrator for the Brotherhood for Democracy and as an advocate in the Viet Labour movement, educating workers about their human rights. He was arrested in 2007 and imprisoned for five years after being convicted of "abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State" under Article 258 of the Penal Code for reporting on land grabs in a number of Vietnamese publications. In May 2009, his detention was found to be arbitrary by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (Opinion 1/2009), however he remained in prison until the end of his sentence. Since his release from prison in 2012, authorities have frequently raided his home, making it difficult for his family to earn a living from renting spare rooms at the back of their property. His adult children have been repeatedly questioned by officials about his activities and he has been badly beaten on a number of occasions by men in plain clothes whom he recognized as security officials.
Nguyễn Trung Tôn is a Protestant pastor and former prisoner of conscience who has written about and promoted freedom of religion in Viet Nam. He was arrested in January 2011 in connection with his writings and imprisoned for two years after being convicted of "conducting propaganda" against the State under Article 88 of the Penal Code. Nguyễn Trung Tôn and his family have been harassed for many years by authorities and unidentified assailants. Human waste, oil, and dirt have been thrown at both a market stall operated by his wife and their family home on a number of occasions. In February 2017, Nguyễn Trung Tôn and a friend were abducted in Quang Binh province by unidentified men and badly beaten. He was hospitalized and required surgery to repair injuries to his knees.
Phạm Văn Trội is a writer, activist, and former prisoner of conscience. He has provided advice to workers and land grab victims and written about human rights and democracy. He was arrested in September 2008 for his writings promoting multi-party democracy and imprisoned for four years, including six months in solitary confinement, after being convicted of "conducting propaganda" against the State under Article 88 of the Penal Code. In May 2009, his detention was found to be arbitrary by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (Opinion 1/2009), however, he remained in prison until the end of his sentence.
Viet Nam is in the midst of a sustained crackdown on human rights which has resulted in the arrest and arbitrary detention of at least fifteen peaceful activists and government critics since January 2017. Prison conditions in Viet Nam are harsh, with inadequate food and health care, falling far short of the minimum requirements set out in the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Nelson Mandela Rules) and other international standards.

The Holdernotes Compete Internationally
Tumblr media
This Saturday the Holderness a cappella group, "The Holdernotes," competed in the quarterfinals of the International Competition of High School A Cappella group.  Music Director Alec Sisco sent me the above photos and wrote:
"Holderness' first ever a cappella group, the Holdernotes, competed in Boston in the quarterfinals of the International Competition of High School A Capella (ICHSA) this past weekend. Although they didn't podium or receive any specific accolades, the group dynamic was electric. The excitement was barely contained before, during, and after they left their aca-hearts out on the stage. This experience was brand new for these brave young students, who seem to have caught the 'a cappella bug.' As the only Lakes Region school with a competitive a cappella group, the Holderness community is beyond excited to support their journey to become excellent musicians who share their love for singing and dancing with anyone who is willing to listen."
Thank you, Mr. Sisco, for making the opportunity possible for our students. And congratulations to our singers Camden Bachochin '22, Allegra Driscoll '19, Shelby Geaney '22, Emilijia Jakumaite ‘20, Nicole Kanowsky '22, Linh Nguyen '19,  Thao (Natalie) Mai '21, Kai Parlett '20, Chip Peterson '21, and  Addy Robison '22.

Super supper: crab soup kitchens provide warmth on rainy Saigon days
Tumblr media
At the Notre-Dame Cathedral
One of the oldest crab soup eateries in Saigon is located in an alley off Nguyen Du Street near the famous cathedral.
The soup served here has crab flesh, flour, mushrooms, eggs and several spices. The flour gives it a pasty texture and the fatty crab flesh adds a sweet flavor.
But what set the crab soup apart are its special additional components. In one version of crab soup, ground beef ball strengthens the meaty elements of the dish. The dish is also served with century eggs, which are preserved in a mixture of clay, ash, salt for several weeks or months.

20 years old crab soup in the middle of Saigon
The dish is sold at a small alley off Nguyen Du Street. Video by VnExpress/Phong Vinh
The eatery used to be located in the corner of Nguyen Du Street and the Cathedral, that is how it has the name. Later when the place is crowded with customers, the place moves to a small alley off Nguyen Du Street.A serving costs VND25,000 ($1.1), which includes century eggs. The restaurant also sells papaya salad with VND15,000 ($0.64) per serving, and sugar cane juice at only VND5,000 ($0.21). It is perfect to take a walk around downtown Saigon and drop by the eatery for an energy boost from crab soup; customers can also park their vehicles in front of the restaurant with VND5,000.
Address: 86 Nguyen Du Street.
Price: VND25,000 – 35,000 ($1.1 – 1.5)
Lan’s crab soup
At this restaurant, crab soup makes an impression with its special seasoning. At a reasonable price, the serving here is considered big compared to those of other places. The crab soup casts an appetizing fragrance with whisked eggs, mushroom, steamed quail eggs. The cook manages to keep the crab flesh in big pieces.
instagram
Foodies can add some pepper or chilli to strengthen the warmth of the dish. The flavor is complete with some spicy vegetables. The dish also stands out with an addition of fish air bubble in the soup; customers can place an order to try the special feature. The eatery is situated on Luong Nhu Hoc Street, District 5.
Address: 239 Luong Nhu Hoc Street
Price: VND20,000 – 40,000 ($0.86 – 1.7)
Thiec market crab soup
The stall, also called Ms. Bong’s soup by its patrons, is located in an a jewelry markets on Pho Co Dieu Street, District 11. The dish’s ingredients at this place also include crab flesh, mushroom, quail egg, century eggs, with an addition of torn chicken flesh. The sizzling soup is ornamented with the bright green onions.
instagram
The price of crab soup here ranges from VND15,000 ($0.64). Besides the familiar ingredients, diners can order the soup with pig’s brain and pork bones as additions. These special components keep many patrons coming back to the eatery from all over the city.
Address: 166 Pho Co Dieu Street
Price: VND15,000-20,000 ($0.64 – 0.86)
Thao’s crab soup
The flavor of Thao’s crab soup stands out thanks to delicious century eggs and pig’s brain. The crab soup stall is located in Ho Thi Ky market flower, District 10. The fatty pig’s brain is among the selling points of this stall.
instagram
However, if you want to enjoy, you have to go early because the pig’s brain for a long time will lose its deliciousness. The price for a full serving is VND25,000 ($1.1).
Address: 68/4 Ho Thi Ky Street
Price: VND15,000-25,000 ($0.64 – 1.1)
Trang’s crab soup
instagram
This diner is located on Van Kiep Street, Binh Thanh District from the morning to the afternoon. One soup bowl costs VND10,000 ($0.43). The soup is thick with a lot of crab flesh, exerting typical crab flavor.
Customers can order additional food such as century eggs or crab flesh. Besides crab soup, the restaurant serves a variety of other snacks such as chicken legs or offal.
Address: 210 Van Kiep Street
Price: VND10,000 – 20,000 ($0.43 – 0.86)

May 1, 2017
11:26pm
6 years ago, on this day,  a really dorky, totally-not-my-type boy asked me to be his girlfriend. But not in a normal, conventional way. It went a little like, “Hey, if I were to ask you out, what would you say?”, and I was just taken aback and responded with a hesitant “yes?”. And thus, the unexpected but expected relationship of Nemo and Thao began. Mind you, this was the first time ever a boy had explicitly expressed his interest in me, and I was just really confused by this whole ordeal. Add to the fact that we were sitting on the roof of the kitchen building behind the temple that we both attended youth group at. But you know, as strange as our relationship started, it was the perfect beginning to how it would blossom and grow. We were a couple that not many people who knew either of us would ever imagine us to be together. We weren’t in the same circle really, and I had a history of crushing on the boys who had a fuckboy style, but sweet personalities. I had always had little flings, never official, with these boys but everyone knew we were kinda flirting. So when it got out that I had become “official” with Nemo, the dorky gamer with the glasses and long hair, everyone was so appalled. I bet his friends thought the same thing, like what was he doing with this preppy, annoyingly bubbly girl? He wore dark colored t-shirts and jeans exclusively, while I was someone who tried to dress up and straighten my hair and pick out different pieces of jewelry every day. We were as opposite as you can get. But somehow, we made it work, and throughout the next 5.5 years, we grew into each other, opposite, but never clashing. It was more of an opposite that complemented each other. We taught each other a lot, and our communication was arguably the type that should be taught in every book teaching about relationships. We were straight up with each other, never beating around the bush and never holding back our frustrations or appreciation. We talked about everything and worked everything out, never brushing anything under a rug. There was nothing that we couldn’t reach a compromise on or talk about. Of course, there were always very difficult, breaking points we reached, but we got through those too. Both of us were stubborn, but in love with each other. Our pride never beat the love that we had for one another. He was a jealous guy, but he acknowledged the fact and always expressed to me when it got to the point where he was bothered, and so I would back off or reduce the interactions, just out of respect for him. Through my immense insecurities and downfalls, he was there for me, never failing to make me feel beautiful, loved, and safe. What started as me giving him a small room in my heart, grew to have him spread yourself throughout my heart, filling it with his love and memories and the happiness we shared.
I never realized how much he helped me to grow and become the person I am today. I never got to truly thank him for all he had done for me as not only my boyfriend, but as my best friend in the whole entire world. There was never a time I couldn’t rely on him, and he always put in so much time and effort into making me happy. All I can hope is that I was able to do the same for him. I wish every single day that I had been more persistent in texting him on that day and that I hadn’t been so busy in the days leading up to that day. I often sit and wonder if there had been any sort of sign I could have seen, anything I could have done to prevent losing him. It’s been hard since that night, but today was especially difficult for me. There’s nothing more I wanted than to have spent the day in bed watching scary movies and cuddling like we usually did. I am so blessed to have had someone like him in my life and have all these memories that we made together. We talked about the future often, and I wish that that future was still possible, but I know that he’ll be there in my heart no matter what.
I miss and love you with every fiber of my being, Nemo Nhien Nguyen, and I think about you each and every day.
