You're absolutely right. I do this for free. I do it on my time. I do it because I want to share with everyone. I just happened to decide to share this fic on a whim. When I started writing it, I had no intention of anyone ever seeing it but me. Then it kind of started taking shape into something pretty decent and I decided to share it, fully expecting it to flop and for me to eventually just delete it. But it blew up and now we're here.

Yes yes the loss of childhood innocence, the inescapable nature of change, and also the fact that longing for something that never happened… doesn’t really go away. Because even Max, who seems much more well adjusted in his life than Charles, still clings onto things from the past that he may have never seen again; he still kept their childhood blanket even though there was no guarantee he’d ever see him again.

I think through both of them, it shows the wistful lingering isn’t inherently bad, you know? It’s that in combination with a willingness to keep growing — running from vs running to.
