As someone who was so excited for Neverafter before I knew it would be played with DnD rules. I was seriously disappointed with this choice.

It seriously neutered the horror element. As someone who loves non-dnd systems. Specially horror based systems there are so many more cool things you can do!

The thing that makes me really sad is that they could have easily made it more horror themed by porting way more Call of Cthulhu or even Delta Green mechanics into their game. Where are my proper sanity mechanics? How about Delta Greens bond mechanics which essentially gamifies your connections to other people. There is no depth to their added horror mechanics. How was the sci-fi season better modded than the horror season? I know they can do it. The time loop element feels rushed and the red bead mechanic even more so.

Before people are like „but Witty, it’s a comedy show“. I know that thank you. But horror and humor aren’t mutually exclusive. Good storytellers, can do both. Hell, d20 has done both. A Crown of Candy has better horror storytelling than the horror season. That episode in the church. A masterpiece. Is it strickly horror? No but the horror of that season is way better than Neverafter.

I think the worst part is that there is no build up of dread. episode 3 is by far the best episode in that season and for a super long season that sucks. The fleeing from the castle is another good one but I feel it’s over far too quickly. It’s good because it plays on that dread. It gives you that slow fading of hope. Seeing the character die one by one is really good and cool. Again fading hope and the setting in of dread.

A lot of horror and specially horror TTRPGs are disempowerment fantasies. While DnD is by its nature an empowerment fantasy, which makes TPK really rare. Again empowerment fantasy. Not that it can’t work, but… it doesn’t work here. In DnD, more often than not, the good guys win. With mostly their shit intact. Your abilities do not decrease as you lose health. This would be such a cool mechanic! again peak dread. To be fair, this mechanic doesn’t appear in CoC or Delta Green. I’m pretty sure. Though healing, both physically and mentally is way harder and takes way more time. Plus, sanity loss effects can throw a great monkey wrench into the works.

Someone on the Call of Cthulhu Reddit group summarized it best when they said „sometimes an investigators best chance are their legs“. Running away and being defeated is a huge part of horror. Again DREAD and hopelessness are huge staples in the genre. Doesn’t mean our heroes can’t win. It’s just harder. Every battle is harder. The chance of loss is so much higher and so much greater.

I do want to say that I do get it. Learning a new system is hard. Especially one that is so different from DnD. They all have incredibly busy lives. Plus I’m not sure how familiar Brennan is with running full-on horror. That’s a lot to ask, even from one of best DMs. Especially to ask him and the cast to play a new system in front of a big nerdy audience. A lot of whom love and are deeply knowledge about horror. Having to perform in front of a big audience in a system you don’t know really well is a lot to ask. It’s fine if one or two people are new, but the whole table? One of my favorite things about Ally‘s arc on Fantasy High, season 1 is them learning how DnD works on camera. It gave me the confidence to try as well and showed me that it’s ok not to be amazing at DnD at first. Because it turns out the most important thing about TTRPGs is having fun. Though clackity magic math rocks are a great perk. But the Ally arc only works because they are sat next to Brian Murphy. An incredibly good player, who just so happens to have been forsaken by dice Christ but still does this as his full time job. He’s up there with Matt, Brennan, and Aabria. So having him next to Ally makes complete sense. That wouldn’t work if they are both relatively new to the system. Also it’s hilarious that Ally seems to have been blessed by dice Christ while Murph has been forsaken.

That said, Murph rolling bad for table right before the final showdown is my favorite thing in the world.

It’s a fine season. It’s just not a good horror season.

Secondly, before Burrows End premiered, Aabria mentioned she picked D&D for Burrows End for a reason.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable about various TTRPG systems but you seem to be, so I thought I'd ask you. Would you say D&D was the right system for this season? Or do you think it took away from the story they were trying to tell?

Hi anon, thank you! I am, to be honest, only a dabbler in systems outside of D&D but honestly I feel D&D was fine. I know that with TTRPG systems, the system does to an extent dictate the story, but I don't think that's the problem here - though I do think it might be the problem in Neverafter, which might have gone better in a system designed for horror.

If you were to ask me how I'd "fix" Burrow's End, honestly, what I would do is retain the basic structure of a stoat family displaced by human intervention and I'd keep the concept of Last Bast as a First Stoat-run police state in an exclusion zone nuclear reactor. I would nix the concept of Phoebe entirely and I'd be vaguer about the timeline such that the humans could simply be reasonably returning after however much time is wise to wait, and I'd make this a story strictly about how an external enemy/threat (even one that is only distantly perceived rather than viscerally realized) can radicalize a society into the fascist state we saw. I'd make the First Stoats the final big-bad, expand upon the world more, and limit the radiation to a comics-esque "yes, it made the first stoats live longer and be more powerful" situtation, perhaps with them controlling access to the (well-contained) source of radiation and therefore power rather than the whole secret history of them attacking Dr. Wenabocker.

In short, I'd make it Rats of NIMH/Watership Down meets 1984 with radiation as the resource; rather than Rats of Nimh/Watership Down meets the goofiest of Golden Age Superman meets Generic Police State Vibes meets only the apocryphal bridge of death scene from HBO Chernobyl meets Chariots of Fire meets Bunnicula. Which you could still run quite well in D&D, because D&D is a game that understands the concept of power structures and advancement therein. I don't think the system was the issue here (and honestly, part of why I'm so disappointed is that the intraparty RP, character builds, and combat sequences, all of which D&D supports well, were great and deserved a much better plot).

On the first day of the new year, I suppose it is customary to think about the day, weeks, & months that have passed & reflect on the high points that have taken place. When thinking about the past 12 months, there are a few things that come to mind for me. The first which is sorta a downer is that I lost my 98 year old grandmother in February of last year. She was, like I said 98 & had lived a good life. I do miss her dearly every day. The other things are more positive. I was promoted last January & enjoy my job a helluva lot more than I did. And. And. And. I started playing DnD on a regular basis. Every week I have either 1 or 2 games that I am a part of. I have seriously fallen head over heels for this crazy ass game that completely overtakes my life. For that though I have to thank Critical Role & all of the amazing moments that the past year gave to us. The Aeor arc that lead to the final battle with Lucien & the most amazing dice rolls known to man in episode 140. Last year also gave us the one thing that many CR fans & the table were waiting for, THE DATE & the beginning of Beau & Yasha as an official couple. We were also graced with the amazing Aabria as GM for EXU with Aimee & Robbie coming to the table. I do hope that we get EXU 2 or at least Aimee at the table as Opal for C3. That would be epic to say the least.

With the world of CR & DnD, I was able to meet some pretty awesome people who I am more than grateful to call friends. They are all incredibly gifted individuals & have no idea how I got so lucky to stumble across them. Whether they are here in the states, or in Prague, or Brazil, or Canada, or France, or wherever they are. They have each had a profound impact on my life & made the past year one to remember. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart.

I do want to take something that Marisha has said these past few months & run with it. All bets are off. I am walking into 2022 with a determination that is unmatched. Here is to 2022 & wishing you all the best in the coming year.

Oh dear, with combat not being standard 5e stuff I’m used to, it’s definitely going to have me zone out during.  All weird spells and stuff….at least it’s the standard action/bonus action/movement it seems.

Oh hey, the only clip of this I’ve ever seen!  Which is Laura swapping out her dice mid-game XD  I lean towards Liam and Sam’s view of dice which is that the dice don’t care, but I do adore Laura’s rituals and such.

Sam goofing around that he doesn’t play ESO makes me wonder how they decide who among the main cast is going to be in the one shots.  I always assuming that Liam’s in a ton of one shots because he loves d&d so much, whereas Sam is in a bunch of one shots because he’s the humor boy, but it does make me think.  *looks at actual attendance*  So Liam is in 31, Matt in 30, Sam and Tal at 29, Marisha at 28, Laura at 27, Travis at 24, and Ashley unsurprisingly at 11 (which I’m sure will pick up more now that blindspot is no more).  (aww, it looks like Matt only got to play in 7 of them, had to DM the rest).  You know, look at that now it’s actually way more balanced than I would have suspected!  Though also looking at these, not sure if I’d actually count some of them as Critical Role one shots, as it includes the Campaign Tips/Critical Troll, as well as the Kinda Funny and Gamespot one shots as well.  ...what is this Sloth and Sundry?  *takes a peek* ….OKAY watching this next, I think.  And the Stephen Colbert one shot is on here too….. ALRIGHT so my own headcanon list of what counts toward the ‘official’ count and whatnot is clearly skewed, so I give up XD

Speaking of costumes (we weren’t but that’s okay) I hope that everyone is a comfortable temperature.  This group is such a mix of costume weights that I feel like either Michelle’s got to be freezing, or Taliesin and Sam are going to start sweating.  Glad that Michelle’s ears look to be on a headband though, I was worried she had them actually on her ears cause that would be painful as fuck for any longish period of time.

Wow I have never seen Matt basically give someone proficiency just to get them past the point where they are stuck.  (again, difference of a one shot vs a campaign, but still!)  This group is rolling SO BAD.  Also they have super low HP, so I wonder if they’re like, level 2/level 3?

It’s an interesting combination, I’m enjoying watching Aabria play, but at the same time this PC feels like all the NPCs from ExU.  I think I said it at the time, but it holds true now.  Creating a ‘character’ doesn’t need to be an integral part into d&d, because she’s just as enjoyable as the other players without feeling like ‘someone different’.

(I am NOT going to go into dRaMa here, but watching this is also reminding me that there are things that some CR cast does in their regular style of play which I just don’t vibe with overall.)

Roll20Con 2020 was a blast.
