Nickname: Nahte (Only to family and/or lovers) Default Tarot Card: The Hermit

When the Hermit card is upright in a Tarot reading, it symbolizes counsel, inner strength, prudence, caution, vigilance, patience, and withdrawal. You might be impatient with people who cannot see what you can see, and you may have a desire to be alone. You are diving deep and figuring things out for yourself. It might mean you need to be alone to do the self-reflection that's necessary right now.

Do they have the Echo? If so, how did they discover it?: Yes, Nahte always had an especial attunement to the hearts and minds of others. He is able to understand speech regardless of language barriers, and is eerily good at sensing the intents of others. If you intend harm, he’s likely to know it. But on the flip side, if you’re a genuine soul, he’ll recognize that and trust his instincts even if the circumstances under which you meet are not ideal. Nahte is very in tune with the natural world, and tends to get along with animals. Even those that cannot speak, he is good at intuiting their desires or intentions, thanks to his Echo.

How/where does the WoL meet them?: When the WoL is sent to meet the slyphs, Nahte is a “poacher” who can be encountered visiting Little Solace to trade and share news. He is curious about your mission, and after watching from an amused distance as you jump through hoops to earn the sylph’s cooperation, ultimately willing to lend his help both diplomatically and as a guide. Being on good terms with the sylphs, and familiar traversing the less travelled regions of the Shroud, his help speeds things up considerably.

How are they recruited into the Scions?: Nahte’s assistance treating with the sylphs and familiarity with the goings on in the deep places of the Shroud where even Wood Wailers rarely tread makes him a valuable contact in watching for Primal activity and Garlean incursions. He will even lend his lance arm to protect others. His good nature and affinity for the Echo become apparent quickly enough, soon making him an obvious choice for an invitation.

Romanceable?: Yes! Though the WoL should be prepared for a somewhat unconventional courtship. While charming and openly flirtatious, Nahte has no prior romantic experience and any indication that his teasing is genuinely reciprocated will spook him, leading to some amusing (if awkward) interactions. The WoL must build a strong friendship with Nahte to advance a romance arc. Though he is only interested in a serious long-term relationship, he is available to any sex or gender WoL, as well as a monogamous, polyamorous and/or asexual partner.

Where they are in the open world:

(As a Scion): Initially Nahte can be found on rooftops outside the Waking Sands, and later up on the high walkways and lookout posts of Mor Dhona. For quests related to Gridania, he will enter the main city but remain on the outskirts.

(As a NPC): Nahte can appear in various remote places around the Shroud, most commonly around Little Solace or the Sylphlands. He will never venture into Gridanian settlements.

Default saying: (when you want to talk to them in open world, how do they respond?)

(As a Scion): “Back from another adventure, eh? You look like you could use a break. I found a beautiful spot scouting yesterday, nice and quiet. Perfect for a walk and a picnic. I could show you?”

(As a NPC): “I grew up a hunter in the Black Shroud, far out of reach of Wailer authority, and never faced the ‘wrath of the Elementals.’ I’ve met plenty of Gridanians looking for an Outsider they could blame their problems on, though.”

What do they typically do off-screen?: Nahte tends to keep busy, and is frequently afield in the Shroud on diplomatic and information gathering forays with the Sylphs and Moon Keeper families beyond Gridania’s reach. At the Scion’s HQ, he usually entertains others with song in the evening and dutifully studies the arcane. When needed, he volunteers as a healer.

Things they Generally Approve of: Honorable/chivalrous acts of kindness, succor, and generosity. Refusing to aid in ways that harm innocents. Attempting nonviolent resolutions before attacking enemies. Calling assholes out on their bullshit (esp. sarcastically) Things they Generally Disapprove of: Attacking first, escalating or glorifying conflict, especially towards beast tribes. (Note that in the case of racial/cultural insults, such as a Gridanian calling Nahte a poacher and heckling him, sucker-punching the Gridanian would NOT result in disapproval)

Small side mission(s): Nahte has a repeatable quest that involves accompanying him to various remote areas in search of trinkets, and will reward you with some playful banter and a random selection of crystals or gathering materials based on the location you choose to visit.

Romancing Nahte requires the completion of his companion quest, Black Coerl, which involves defending and freeing one of his sisters who has been accused of poaching/angering the Elementals and captured by angry Gridanians in a remote town afflicted by plague. This ultimately requires soliciting the help of the Padjals to reassure the town that the Elemental's anger is not the cause of their affliction, and convincing the town (and Nahte) to allow him to tend them with his own healing magic alongside the Conjurers. Having done so, Nahte will trust you to protect not only him, but also his family and way of life, while helping him stay true to his own values when he was tempted to react violently towards the villagers holding his sister captive.

Potential tarot card changes:

If accepted into the Scions: Justice When the Justice card is upright in a Tarot reading, it symbolizes harmony, balance, equality, righteousness, virtue, honor, and advice. It can also mean a time for adjustments, as well as an opportunity to bring physical, emotional, social, and spiritual things back into balance. It also means it is time to stand tall and strong against the things that might be trying to throw you off balance.

If romanced by the WoL: Temperance When the Temperance card is upright in a Tarot reading, it symbolizes moderation, temperance, patience, harmony, fusion, good influence, and confidence. This card can also be a warning to temper your behavior and a reminder that irreconcilable opposites can be reconciled. You are truly connected to what makes a good life, and you are living it. You have a strict moral code, and you will work hard to reach your goals, whatever they might be.

If not recruited/kept as an adventurer: The Hermit (reversed) When the Hermit card is reversed in a Tarot reading, it symbolizes imprudence, hastiness, rashness, and acts of foolishness and immaturity. You might be too withdrawn from society and desperately in need of the company of others. It also might indicate that although you are very focused on being alone right now, you're still avoiding dealing with your real problems, both internally and externally.

Check out the e/book here! : www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer… Illustration © Games Workshop Art director/producer: Karen Miksza ++++++++++++++++++++++ The brief for this one was a three-way melee between Kor'sarro Khan of the White Scars, Tau Commander Shadowsun, and Captain Kayvaan Shrike of the Raven Guard, amidst a mixed-force battle of White Scars, Raven Guard, and Cadian IG versus the Tau fighting atop a rocky promontory with jungle. The main focus of the show is Shadowsun, whom according to the reference and specs sent to me, often fields two shield drones. I thought that could be a perfect excuse to not end up in an awkward “2 on 1” prong attack. So that resulted in our assault marine captain Shrike pulling off a DFA and Kor'sarro timing a strike to take out her shield on one side. Given the hardback template/format I decided early on to have two back to back crisis suits behind the main trinary to visually frame the action and hopefully some narrative link to what was going on in the background. While sketching in comp ideas I was thinking of World in Conflict FMVs (yeah I watched a compilation vid of the different sequences but set to just Audioslave’s Shadow on the Sun… how apt for our Tau commander ) which inspired that jungle crossfire for the back cover (left of image), along with some physics logic I thought should be observed such as “if plasma based weaponry gets spammed in the general direction of a forest, there should be a moderate to high chance of a forest fire occurring” which kinda explains why we see the charred dirt and branches and hints of trees on fire in the back. Other favourite points of interest that I recall from half a year back: -Singed/scorched Imperial armour versus cracked/gouged tau armour -Drones buzzing a tree (near the sun) -Devastator Raven going head on with the battlesuit turned away from us, armour in the process of being seared off chunk by chunk. -White Scar reading poetry on the lawn in an admirable last stand -Unfortunate IG, now literally half the man he used to be. This piece is, in my own way, dedicated to two very unique creatives whose achievements and trust in me have both inspired and helped me take my work to higher levels. Ghislain Barbe(

NOT because he is coincidentally now the art director on Eternal Crusade at BHVR

, but because when I was a kid I played a PC game called Heavy Gear by Dream Pod 9/Activision, and along with it came a printed game manual with wonderful mecha illustrations and diagrams that blew my little mind, and he was the illustrator of my favourite designs in the book.), and Peter Cooper(an incredibly kind and talented writer/director who years ago offered me the opportunity to do the illustrated set pieces for his HALO fan-film, Operation Chastity). Moreso because I think they might appreciate certain aspects of this image in their own capacities, like the pew pew lazars. Ok really its just about the lazars and the airburst munitions.

And my special thanks and apologies to my truly professional and patient producer, Karen Miksza, for enduring and evaluating a chickenscratch-sketch of mine that resembled more of a Rorschach exercise than anything. You rock!

As for the artwork:

Reading the brief, and visualising the narrative and technical approach, made me want to crawl under a rock somewhere and just go into a coma. But it dawned on me it was really about huge battlesuits and powered armour on bikes in a desert--the very stuff my favourite SF childhood memories were made of. So I put on some Bubblegum Crisis tracks to remind me of what I felt was special about the genre and what I would like to see happen again, and got back to work. "Say Yes!" by Maiko Hashimoto in particular, really helped bring back those memories.

Bearing in mind this is meant to be a triple-fold/paneled illustration; I was to illustrate a White Scars Stormseer fighting a Crisis Battlesuit with a tulwar on the front cover(rightmost third of image), looming Riptide in center third, and miscellaneous combatants filling up the remainder. The White Scars were to seem joyous in the midst of their hunt, armed with lances or tulwars in addition to the bolters on their bikes. All this was to take place on a dusty plain. I immediately thought that a scene showing a breached frontline would work best, to help put across just how fast moving and aggressive the White Scars are known to be, and for all the long distance planning of the Tau once up close and personal with Space Marines on bikes, it can quickly descend into unmanageable chaos. Troops having to divert their attention from the front to acquire stray bikers without hitting their friends, and crisis suits engaging their thrusters to quickly manoeuver along the ranks and train their guns on the bikes. Crisis suits... in a crisis of their own... aha..haha..h-

As a Chinese guy, I felt it got really hilarious at one point painting Fu Manchu 'roid mongols in sun-bleached white armour going to town on the Tau. So I just rode that wave as best I could Having my own front row seat and getting into the mentality of what it means to create a 40K flavoured illustration is making me more and more of a fan of what I think the franchise represents on different levels. When I say I find 40K really insane, I mean it in a sincerely optimistic way, and I think I am finally getting better at understanding where that balance point between grimdark outlook, cautionary tale/social commentary, and outlandish spectacle sits.

This reflection of what 40K meant to me, had me throwing out the idea that maybe in order for the Stormseer to even be in close combat with a Battlesuit twice his height, required he be presented in a way that could rival the nuttiness of the idea to begin with. So imagining a narrative, I assume these guys could have force-lances that they could also throw, using that as a medium range large-caliber stopping weapon (illustrated at bottom right) and then move into closer combat with their shorter range tulwars. (This of course sets up the visual excuse for the flapping blood-soaked hair plume on the end of the lance up front.) The stormseer would realise that his bolters might be ineffectual at getting him within close enough range so he would opt to just pop a wheelie off the frontline Tau and use the bolter riddled chassis of the crisis suit as a landing ramp and shield to buy him precious seconds to plan his next move. They're Space Marines. Seemed legit. "SAY YES!"

Other favourite details:

-Please excuse the slightly overdone prismatic effect on the Riptide's shield. I still think it looks nice and it makes some sense. Just riffing off similar idea in the previous Tau codex supplement. I also wanted to illustrate how the hexa-projection areas might be linked to individual projection nodes, and we would see how individual 'tiles' pulse under stress as opposed to having a continuous 'texture pattern'.

-I keep reading in the fluff how much advanced targetting tech the Tau pack, technically a Fire warrior would have onboard sensors and targetting aids, that eventually gets meshed with higher level networked data from sensor drones, add on to that markerlight data and more... basically it just sounds like a Tau shooter could be drunk, falling over, and still hit a fly in between its eyes having accounted for atmospheric disruption from 600 meters away. So that I felt gave me the right to imply that they can shoot incoming rounds out of the sky. Which we can see to great effect in the background and right behind the Stormseer. There of course is the consideration for fans who think its unreasonable, so they also look like they could be randomly hit because the relatively slow moving missiles are travelling through a firestorm of plasma. But I just wanted to say what the original intent was Also to the left is a inverted Phalanx-CIWS looking burst cannon drone that seems to be in charge of clearing the skies for ground troops (when I saw that design I almost stood up and clapped at the screen). And for those of you who absolutely do not buy any of that, there's this:

-Poor Tau loses his head in the background-The bikes were initially block-modelled in Sketchup to help me give a sense of their geometry and what I could do with them.This took over a week to do, the longest I've spent on any of the illustrations to date and burnt a weekend or so (gladly so) getting it done. I hope it makes the Tau and White Scars fans amongst you happy and rooting for your favourites and for mech heads in general

TRUST NPC - Lancelot Chavers

Selection: “Hey, alright! We’re gonna do great!”

Job: Paladin (PLD)

Weapons: Sword and shield. Uses the Enhancing Sword and Ritter Shield model.

AI Behavior:

A little slow to pull, tends to stick to small packs as well. Can be encouraged to pull more by healers or DPS players, but always finishes the current pack before moving on. Picks up aggro well and is sure to catch any stragglers that try to pick on other party members.

Tends to take most tank AOEs to the face, but is good with dodging others, if not a little slow. Tries his very best to keep the boss and mobs facing away from the party to keep dodging simple. Might mess up the first few times, but after getting hit with a mechanic will perfect it the rest of the encounter.

Usually will not move from his position in front of a boss unless for stack markers, and in most cases if it’s on him he will let the other party members come to him. Tends to ignore mechanics that include moving to click things or adds that don’t need to be tanked as well. Very focused on boss damage and aggro.

Will not LB unless absolutely needed due to a mechanic, or a hard-hitting AOE is coming and the entire party is less than 50% health.

Lance is very chatty for a Trust, usually making polite comments or friendly banter through most non-combat running. He seems to be very interested in what everyone else brings to the table, and will ask questions based on their Jobs or abilities.

Very congratulatory, especially after successful boss kills. His comments will depend on how long it took for a kill, number of deaths/raises, and successful mechanics. They can range from outright cheering to a more modest “We’ll get it next time.”

If left idle for at least 5 minutes, Lance tends to get bored and wander in small circles while grumbling.

Will’S RP PLOTTING CHEAT-SHEET

Who the heck is my muse anyway:

Newest member of the Indigo E4. Magician on the side/for funz. Secret phantom thief. Disaster magnet. A fucking nerdlet.

Points of interest:

Appearance: It ain’t Will if he ain’t wearing his mask/dressing like he’s going to a costume party. Pretty tall and fit with a naturally curvy figure. Couldn’t bench press a large stick. Very fair skin that burns easily. The lilac blue color of his eyes can be seen faintly through the whites of his mask upon close inspection.

The First Elite: He’s the first Elite Johtonians/Kantonians face, and is thus the weakest of the 4 + Lance. However, he is also weaker than both the 8th Gym Leaders of the Indigo League (Clair & Green) when they choose to fight at full power. This power discrepancy makes him feel a need to constantly reaffirm (be it to himself or others) his worthiness of being an Elite.

Budding Psychic Master: His skill with Psychic types is enough that he has already been granted the title of Master in his Type, and he already has secretly unlocked a lot of his own brand of destructive Psychic powers. Talented as he is, he still has a long way to go to perfect his skill and lots more potential to realize.

Secret Identities: A runaway whose village was wiped off the map to make room for Johto’s Safari Zone. A phantom thief that uses his psychic powers to steal and expose evidence of corrupt, untouchable criminals. An unknowing descendant of a dead clan of Psychics. And many more. Tl;dr: He is never who he appears to be to most people.

What they’ve been up to recently:

By default, Will is always looking for new ways to further improve both his powers and his Trainer skills. And by night he is trying to find and expose those criminals that have ascended above the law, though that same law is still trying to hunt him down. In his free time, he continues his hobby of treasure hunting and exploring, always excited about the possibility of finding new Pokemon, items, or adventures. Due to his job as an Elite (and the first Elite at that), he doesn’t have nearly as much free time as he used to.

Soon, once his thread with Sabrina is underway, he’ll also take an interest in discovering the secrets of the dead clan he apparently descends from.

Where to find them:

Indigo Plateau: It’s his workplace, so he kinda has to be there most of the time. All Trainers are guaranteed to meet and fight Will, so he gets to meet lots of new people daily. Since he is the one of the E4 that fights the most Trainers, you can also often catch him in the Plateau’s Pokemon Center.

Johto/Kanto: Will can be found anywhere in Johto/Kanto, whether it be on business from the League to take care of some issue or just to explore. He especially loves to explore the Lake of Rage/Mahogany Town area during peak rainy/flood season.

Whirl Islands: Will frequents the depths of Whirl Islands in order to pay respect to its resident Legendary, Lugia. He has never seen the bird himself, but he is able to sense its presence at the bottom of the ocean. He relates to the stories of Lugia’s alienating power and losing its home and literally just wants to give it some kind of company. He doesn’t really do anything while he’s here. He just sits quietly, thinks, stares down at the waterfall, etc.

Literally ANYWHERE: Will, thanks to Xatu, can Teleport anywhere in the world he’s visited, which as a former world traveller is a lot. Anywhere he hasn’t visited, he usually can just Teleport near its general location and walk/fly there. As a naturally curious explorer, he’ll especially gravitate towards mysterious areas (eg Solaceon Ruins) or places that offer new experiences (eg a new Cafe in Kalos or a festival going on in Unova).

Current plans:

I got something set up with fireredrules’ Red with some hijinks regarding one of Will’s little phantom thief operations gone wrong.

I also have something set up with infragments’ Sabrina regarding Will exploring his clan ancestry with her.

And I also have a fun FE AU verse thread going on with tulog’s Caitlin.

And then systematrical’s Gold is having a doodle fight with Will.

I may be forgetting someone so if I am then I’m sorry and I’m not purposely leaving anybody off this!

In addition to that, I’d say I’m up for misadventure-type threads, threads where he meets new people and maybe is able to help them in some way (or vice versa), and anything exploring the weird or the mythical or the mysterious, etc. Will is very aware that there is a lot of spoopy and inexplicable stuff out there, and outside Ghosts, he’s very curious about it. It also allows for great fun with going wild with hc’s!

In general, he needs more close friends, as in friends who actually know some of his secrets and can help him out with just a thoughtful ear. I’d also love for him to hang out with other League members (any region but especially Johto & Kanto). He also does have his personal issues regarding his perceived inadequacy as an Elite, some personal fears regarding his powers, etc. that I’ve been wanting to rp. Though, those would take more build up.

If you have an idea for something tho, feel free to throw it at me in an OOC ask or IM! Even if we can’t come up with a plot, I’m always game for throwing hc��s around for good fun.

Offered interactions:

Well, as a friendly explorer-type, Will can often be found anywhere that’s needed. So he can always bump into anybody and let whatever whirlwind the other muse is caught up in sweep em both up.

Also, if you feel like making them go on any kind of adventure, supernatural hijinks or no, that’s kind of Will’s thing. He can very easily sweep people up into his OWN shenanigans, which often involve anything from strange ruins to mishaps with his own Psychic powers.

Finally, he does have a vigilante alter ego. He can prove to either be a formidable foe to muses that come up against him, or he can maybe get mixed up with a civilian in some silly mistake he didn’t mean to. It’d really all depend on the muse and what you want. He’s decently flexible.

The 2nd Act Breakup, or Why it Makes Sense for Keith to be Away from Lance in S4

I’ve seen a bunch of people freak out about Keith and Lance having very few moments in S4, what with Keith leaving for the Blade of Marmora, and so I wanted to maybe help ease some people’s anxiety, by writing a meta on why Keith leaving makes perfect sense for klance, because honestly? That is the conclusion I walked away from S4 with.

We know Keith and Lance are each other’s romantic interests, and as this post says, in the very first episode Lance was introduced as the main character, and Keith as his love interest. Why does this matter? Well, because every good story establishes its themes and growing conflicts right off the bat, so the audience will know what they’re getting into and what problems should be resolved, as well as the different characters involved. Putting something like this in your first episode? it’s a big deal. It’s saying: here’s a pair of characters, this is their current dynamic, now watch it change over the course of our show. This is highly common for a romance arc, which is defined by TV Tropes as “the journey of two characters from strangers to lovers.”

And while Keith and Lance aren’t complete strangers when they meet in E1, they didn’t really know each other before the first episode. Which still fits (TV tropes also mentions how this trope “comes in a myriad forms and flavors”).

So how does any of this relate to Keith leaving in S4, you ask? The answer lies in the Three Act Structure.

The Three Act Structure is a typical and frequently-used narrative structuring template. Most of the mainstream movies released by Hollywood conform to this template, but it can be found in other story-telling forms as well. The idea is that the story is structured so that all of the action falls into one of three acts, with regular plot-points (or reversals) used to bridge each act, and send the narrative into a different direction than it had previously been going.

If we take into consideration that the show has a 78 episode contract with netflix, we can assume there will be at least 7 seasons (assuming each season has 13 episodes like the previous seasons, with the exception of S3 and S4 which were originally intended to be one season), it would make S4 the second act.

This makes S4 absolutely the perfect time for Keith to leave the group and Lance, ESPECIALLY after their closeness in S3, because of the Second Act Breakup, which is a commonly featured trope (examples can be found in the link) that teases a relationship by separating the two love interests, adding angst and drama, usually over a misunderstanding.

Now let’s look back at season 4. Separation? Check. Angst and drama? Definitely check. Misunderstanding - it’s pretty clear that Keith joined the BOM because he doesn’t think he has a place on team voltron - there’s still one paladin too many. I’d say that’s a big check for misunderstanding.

It fits. Moreover, the Second Act Breakup is just that, a temporary separation of the lovers in Act 2, after-which the lovers are reunited for the Third Act. To me, it’s a pretty clear indication that: A) Keith will be returning to team voltron, no doubts about that, and B) When that happens, I expect the Keith/Lance dynamic to take a romantic turn and really develop. That’s probably when we can expect the “will they/won’t they” tropefest. This should be towards the end of the series (which would make sense - if they get together too soon, the audience is left with nothing to root for).

So yeah. That’s why I’m not worried about Keith leaving for good, or about his absence from team voltron “killing” klance (what was it about absence making the heart grow fonder?). Anyways, I hoped I managed to ease some of your worries / anxiety. Thanks for reading!

Check out the e/book here! : www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer… Illustration © Games Workshop Art director/producer: Karen Miksza ++++++++++++++++++++++ The brief for this one was a three-way melee between Kor'sarro Khan of the White Scars, Tau Commander Shadowsun, and Captain Kayvaan Shrike of the Raven Guard, amidst a mixed-force battle of White Scars, Raven Guard, and Cadian IG versus the Tau fighting atop a rocky promontory with jungle. The main focus of the show is Shadowsun, whom according to the reference and specs sent to me, often fields two shield drones. I thought that could be a perfect excuse to not end up in an awkward "2 on 1" prong attack. So that resulted in our assault marine captain Shrike pulling off a DFA and Kor'sarro timing a strike to take out her shield on one side. Given the hardback template/format I decided early on to have two back to back crisis suits behind the main trinary to visually frame the action and hopefully some narrative link to what was going on in the background. While sketching in comp ideas I was thinking of World in Conflict FMVs (yeah I watched a compilation vid of the different sequences but set to just Audioslave's Shadow on the Sun... how apt for our Tau commander ) which inspired that jungle crossfire for the back cover (left of image), along with some physics logic I thought should be observed such as "if plasma based weaponry gets spammed in the general direction of a forest, there should be a moderate to high chance of a forest fire occurring" which kinda explains why we see the charred dirt and branches and hints of trees on fire in the back. Other favourite points of interest that I recall from half a year back: -Singed/scorched Imperial armour versus cracked/gouged tau armour -Drones buzzing a tree (near the sun) -Devastator Raven going head on with the battlesuit turned away from us, armour in the process of being seared off chunk by chunk. -White Scar reading poetry on the lawn in an admirable last stand -Unfortunate IG, now literally half the man he used to be. This piece is, in my own way, dedicated to two very unique creatives whose achievements and trust in me have both inspired and helped me take my work to higher levels. Ghislain Barbe( NOT because he is coincidentally now the art director on Eternal Crusade at BHVR , but because when I was a kid I played a PC game called Heavy Gear by Dream Pod 9/Activision, and along with it came a printed game manual with wonderful mecha illustrations and diagrams that blew my little mind, and he was the illustrator of my favourite designs in the book.), and Peter Cooper(an incredibly kind and talented writer/director who years ago offered me the opportunity to do the illustrated set pieces for his HALO fan-film, Operation Chastity). Moreso because I think they might appreciate certain aspects of this image in their own capacities, like the pew pew lazars. Ok really its just about the lazars and the airburst munitions. And my special thanks and apologies to my truly professional and patient producer, Karen Miksza, for enduring and evaluating a chickenscratch-sketch of mine that resembled more of a Rorschach exercise than anything. You rock! As for the artwork: Reading the brief, and visualising the narrative and technical approach, made me want to crawl under a rock somewhere and just go into a coma. But it dawned on me it was really about huge battlesuits and powered armour on bikes in a desert--the very stuff my favourite SF childhood memories were made of. So I put on some Bubblegum Crisis tracks to remind me of what I felt was special about the genre and what I would like to see happen again, and got back to work. "Say Yes!" by Maiko Hashimoto in particular, really helped bring back those memories. Bearing in mind this is meant to be a triple-fold/paneled illustration; I was to illustrate a White Scars Stormseer fighting a Crisis Battlesuit with a tulwar on the front cover(rightmost third of image), looming Riptide in center third, and miscellaneous combatants filling up the remainder. The White Scars were to seem joyous in the midst of their hunt, armed with lances or tulwars in addition to the bolters on their bikes. All this was to take place on a dusty plain. I immediately thought that a scene showing a breached frontline would work best, to help put across just how fast moving and aggressive the White Scars are known to be, and for all the long distance planning of the Tau once up close and personal with Space Marines on bikes, it can quickly descend into unmanageable chaos. Troops having to divert their attention from the front to acquire stray bikers without hitting their friends, and crisis suits engaging their thrusters to quickly manoeuver along the ranks and train their guns on the bikes. Crisis suits... in a crisis of their own... aha..haha..h- As a Chinese guy, I felt it got really hilarious at one point painting Fu Manchu 'roid mongols in sun-bleached white armour going to town on the Tau. So I just rode that wave as best I could Having my own front row seat and getting into the mentality of what it means to create a 40K flavoured illustration is making me more and more of a fan of what I think the franchise represents on different levels. When I say I find 40K really insane, I mean it in a sincerely optimistic way, and I think I am finally getting better at understanding where that balance point between grimdark outlook, cautionary tale/social commentary, and outlandish spectacle sits. This reflection of what 40K meant to me, had me throwing out the idea that maybe in order for the Stormseer to even be in close combat with a Battlesuit twice his height, required he be presented in a way that could rival the nuttiness of the idea to begin with. So imagining a narrative, I assume these guys could have force-lances that they could also throw, using that as a medium range large-caliber stopping weapon (illustrated at bottom right) and then move into closer combat with their shorter range tulwars. (This of course sets up the visual excuse for the flapping blood-soaked hair plume on the end of the lance up front.) The stormseer would realise that his bolters might be ineffectual at getting him within close enough range so he would opt to just pop a wheelie off the frontline Tau and use the bolter riddled chassis of the crisis suit as a landing ramp and shield to buy him precious seconds to plan his next move. They're Space Marines. Seemed legit. "SAY YES!" Other favourite details: -Please excuse the slightly overdone prismatic effect on the Riptide's shield. I still think it looks nice and it makes some sense. Just riffing off similar idea in the previous Tau codex supplement. I also wanted to illustrate how the hexa-projection areas might be linked to individual projection nodes, and we would see how individual 'tiles' pulse under stress as opposed to having a continuous 'texture pattern'. -I keep reading in the fluff how much advanced targetting tech the Tau pack, technically a Fire warrior would have onboard sensors and targetting aids, that eventually gets meshed with higher level networked data from sensor drones, add on to that markerlight data and more... basically it just sounds like a Tau shooter could be drunk, falling over, and still hit a fly in between its eyes having accounted for atmospheric disruption from 600 meters away. So that I felt gave me the right to imply that they can shoot incoming rounds out of the sky. Which we can see to great effect in the background and right behind the Stormseer. There of course is the consideration for fans who think its unreasonable, so they also look like they could be randomly hit because the relatively slow moving missiles are travelling through a firestorm of plasma. But I just wanted to say what the original intent was Also to the left is a inverted Phalanx-CIWS looking burst cannon drone that seems to be in charge of clearing the skies for ground troops (when I saw that design I almost stood up and clapped at the screen). And for those of you who absolutely do not buy any of that, there's this: warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Ai… -Poor Tau loses his head in the background -The bikes were initially block-modelled in Sketchup to help me give a sense of their geometry and what I could do with them. This took over a week to do, the longest I've spent on any of the illustrations to date and burnt a weekend or so (gladly so) getting it done. I hope it makes the Tau and White Scars fans amongst you happy and rooting for your favourites and for mech heads in general
