The Captain and Cassandra p4
“Who’s that!? Is he riding a rhinoceros?” Cap asked as they stopped the horses. The place where the Great Tree used to be dropped away not far from them.
“Uh-oh. That’s Hector. Weapons free, dad.” Cass said as she hauled out Shadowblade. “He has a pair of bearcats with him, keep an eye out for them.”
They were picking their way around to the path that he had used to get around the loss of the Tree, it was narrow and cliffs made moving slow and dangerous.
They saw him stare down at them then his eyes went wide as he saw the Moonstone on her breast.
“No. No! NO! HOW DARE YOU!?” His eyes went fully insane as he extended his blade and spurred his mount forward.
“What do we do?” Cap asked. He looked around but the path was not very wide and turning the horses would take too long with the madman bearing down on him.
“We fight. Stay close!” Cass said as she charged forward up the narrow path. She switched the Shadowblade to her left hand. She wasn’t going to try a pass against him on the open side of the cliff. She hugged the cliff face and saw that her father was doing the same. The rhino was too big to get as close as the horses, but that big horn on the front made a difference.
Just then the bearcats came racing past Hector and accelerated toward her. They bounded up the side of the cliff face, they were trying to force the horses toward the drop-off.
Cassandra raised the Shadowblade then clenched her other fist causing black rocks to pop out of the rock walls flinging the surprised bearcats over edge into the ravine below.
She used another black rock to punch the rhino in the face, trying to force an opening. It began to move away from the wall but it was too heavy.
Cass loosed many black rocks to force the enormous bulk of the rhino out of their way, but she had to get them out of the way again so they could pass.
Hector leapt from his mount.
Cassandra stabbed up at him and their blades met.
Cass realized that he’s leapt would land him not on her but her father.
“Dad!” She cried.
The Captain of the Guard saw the man flying through the air at them. He could see where that jump was going to land. On him.
But not today. He braced his sword with both hands and leaned back himself. The kick to the chest Hector was expecting to deliver ended up missing and  the Captain instead pushed him up and over the horse and into the cliff wall.
Cassandra used a black rock to shove him across the path and into the ravine.
He fell with a shout before a thud cut him off.
Cap grunted as he straightened. His back did not like that.
Cass kept them at a gallop until they reached the top of the path, before allowing them to slow.
“You alright, dad?” Cass asked she she brought her horse next to her father’s.
“Mostly. I’m getting too old for these kinds of things.” He rubbed his back.
“That won’t have finished off Hector. We should keep moving as fast as we can and lose him.” Cass recommended.
“Good plan. Lets switch to remounts and keep going.” He said.
***
“How could that not have finished him? That was a huge drop.” Cap stated.
“I threw him off a hundred foot cliff before. He just got up and walked it off.” Cass explained as they came to the top of the cliff. Owl came down and landed on her shoulder.
“Great. Let’s switch to remounts and keep going.” Cap suggested as he brought his horse to a stop. The charge up the path had exhausted the horses they were riding. Cap was sweating from the effort of climbing onto the other horse. He wasn’t in shape for fighting anymore.
“I don’t know what it is about the Brotherhood, they are substantially better fighters than anyone I have ever encountered.” Cass said.
“And you’ve encountered a lot of fighters. I’ve heard about your exploits on this mission from people along the way.” Cap said as he urged his horse into a trot.
Cass shrugged. “I thought the Challenge of the Brave brought out the best fighters. Now that I’ve fought the best fighters, its no contest.”
“What makes them better?” Cap asked. He had seen how fast Hector had been, was there more? To leap perfectly in a dynamic situation like that and fight at the same time, was impressive and scary.
“They’re fast. Really fast. Faster then anyone I’ve ever seen, not a lot faster or we’d be dead, but faster. And strong. They hit like a charging bull. Blocking a swing from them is like trying to block a horse’s kick. I have no idea how they do it. I need saw Adira practice or train in anyway. She was always ready to fight when something came up. I’m thinking there is some kind of magical enhancement they are using.” Cassandra said.
“You think there really is something like that?” Cap asked.
“I’ve seen magic hair and rocks, a snow potion, used the memory wand, and been turned into a bird. Yeah. I think there could be something like that.” Cass said.
“Wait, what? Turned into a bird!?” Cap asked.
Cassandra chuckled. “Yes, we all got turned into birds by a weird couple in the middle of a forest. They had a magic teapot that turned whoever drank the tea into a bird. And some magic eggs that turned you back. Rapunzel was a beautiful bird. Flying was kinda fun. But then we learned they were turning people into birds for their collection.”
“Uh-oh.” Cap said. Looking at his daughter.
“Yeah. The boys  were changed too and we were all in a cage. The woman, Mother, turned into a hawk and when we broke out of the cage I lured her away, then joined up with Owl here to keep her busy until Lance and Eugene could tackle the couple while Raps used eggs to turn everyone back, and…” Cass said.
Cass went quiet. Cap could see she was pensive about some something. He knew here well enough that something was bothering her, but she wasn’t ready to talk about it yet. He kept them going at an easy but furlong eating trot, hoping to put Hector way behind them.
She held up her hand and flexed her hand.
“What am I doing? Why did I do this? Rapunzel used the last egg on me, but I betrayed her and took the Moonstone from her.  For what, a power I can barely control and a destiny I am not ever sure I want.
“I’ve been trying to keep her safe and now I put her in danger. She looks up to me like the big sister she never had, but we shared a mother. She said we were even more like sister, and all I could do was rant how my own mother chose her over me. For what, so I could be locked in a tower and ignored for 18 years.”
Cass looked right at her father. “Dad, you were a better parent then mother ever wanted to be. But I am the worst sister and friend there ever was. I wanted to keep her safe, I thought she wasn’t listening to me, not trusting my judgement, but I was just trying to make her do what I wanted.”
“Its our job to keep them safe.” Cap said. “But we can’t tell them what to do. They have a job to do too, and we support them in that job. Their job is to lead. We are the ones that follow. You know, like the director of a play. When we are a player we listen to the director. Arguing with him isn’t a great idea.”
Cass snorted and smiled slightly at the memory, arguing with the director of the play she had wanted to be in, even getting her father to audition too. She had wanted to do more with her part but that wasn’t what the play was about.
“Well, you did do a good job singing and dancing. I think that was the only reason the director didn’t toss me out of the play completely.” Cass said with a smile.
Cap chuckled, “Maybe, but now what?”
Cass touched the opal embedded in her chest. “I’ve got to get this to her and give it to her. I don’t think I can stay away from her all that long. Demanitus said that if the Sundry didn’t join with the Moonstone the black rocks would destroy the world looking for her.”
Cap frowned at that, but they were headed in the right direction, so he’d pry into that a bit later.

“Did everyone else come with a date?” with Charles Sumner please.
This did not go in a direction either of us probably anticipated, but I’m on this particular kick lately and I cannot help myself:
Charles Sumner stared at
the invitation grasped firmly in his hands, still in utter disbelief that he
was going. Yes, he had befriended George Ticknor ages before, and had attended
countless parties thrown by Ticknor and his wife. It was commonly accepted in
and around Boston that any party that the Ticknor’s threw was considered the
event of the year, and to be invited was a great honor. Once again, Charles had made their list. Despite that fact, it was still a shock to him that
people seemed to enjoy his company at all. Self-doubt was crippling that way,
and though he agonized over the intrusive thoughts, he accepted the invitation
all the same.
He didn’t live too
far from them, so he decided to walk, hoping it would help calm his nerves. He found
himself in the main hall about 15 minutes later, a little cold but no worse for
wear. Before he had even fully pulled his coat off, a familiar voice rang out
from down the hall. “Charles!”
Fanny Longfellow
looked positively radiant at the foot of the stairs, waving him over as
excitedly as propriety allowed. “I’m so happy you’re here,” she whispered as he
stepped beside her. “I hear the Ticknors have a special surprise for us this
evening.”
“Do they?” Charles
asked, vaguely curious. His main goal for the evening was simply trying to survive
it, but if the Ticknors had some sort of Christmas surprise, that could
potentially be a bit of fun.
“No one knows exactly
what, but I have some guesses.” Fanny grinned, taking his arm.
It was at that
moment he noticed something important was missing from the scene. “Where’s
Henry?”
“Probably talking
with Corny, I’d wager. Or sampling the wine table,” she laughed, giving his arm
a squeeze.
“And why are you
standing here all by yourself?” he asked, patting her hand gently.
“I can handle
myself every once in a while. Though present company is certainly a marked
improvement.” Charles’ cheeks reddened at that, but he smiled all the same.
“Shall we?”
“We shall.”
Arm in arm, the
two of them made their way to the main ballroom. Henry, sure enough, was off to
the side, sipping a glass of red wine. The Ticknors were parading around the
room triumphantly, King and Queen of their own tiny little kingdom. Friends and
acquaintances alike were dancing the night away or talking happily in the
corners. Children ran around the room, firing off poppers and playing games. It
was picture perfect, like something out of a story book.
The ballroom
itself was filled with garlands of holly draped artfully along the walls, and wreaths
hanging quaintly in the windows. In the center of the room stood a table, with
a large screen standing upon it. Beside the screen were sundry presents, each
addressed to one of the young boys and girls in attendance. Charles wondered
what was hidden behind the screen, but Fanny seemed even more curious than he
did.
With Henry and
Fanny now by his side, Charles seemed to visibly relax, though something tugged at the back
of his mind. He couldn’t place it at first, but as more and more people
trickled in, he realized just how paired off all the adults in the room were.
“Fanny…” he
finally asked, after chatting away with her and Henry for a while. “It could be
my imagination, but… did everyone else come with a date?”
Henry and Fanny surveyed
the room. It wasn’t entirely the
case. It would have been almost impossible for Charles to be the only one
present without a plus one. There were certainly others in his shoes, but far
less than one would expect at such a large party. Even the teenagers in the
room seemed to have paired off for dancing and courting- their parents keeping
close, watchful eyes on them.
Fanny smiled,
taking Charles’ hand. “Not quite... Tom certainly didn’t.”
Sure enough, Fanny’s
brother had also come to the party alone, but unlike Charles he savored being
the center of attention and found himself surrounded by a large group of admirers.
Henry also smirked,
putting the glass of wine down and squeezing Charles’ arm reassuringly. “You’re
not alone, Carlos. Especially with us.”
Charles nodded, unconvinced.
“It’s true,” Fanny
pressed. “You’re one of us, aren’t you?”
As Henry and Fanny
both stared up at him expectantly, Charles felt the heat rising to his face
again. Uncomfortably clearing his throat, he nodded, trying to avoid eye
contact. Perhaps he had imagined it, but he could have sworn he saw Henry and
Fanny wink at one another.
“Attention!
Attention!” Ticknor suddenly yelled, a bright smile on his face. “Everyone, make
a circle now- children in front of me, there we go- now, before we get to
presents, it’s time to show you what our grand surprise is.”
As the trio made
their way closer to the center of the room, the lights around them began to
dim.
“Merry Christmas,
my friends,” Ticknor smiled, and with a wave of his hand the servants pulled
the folding doors of the screen, revealing a beautiful Christmas tree inside.
The children
gasped with delight to see the tree done up in gold and red, with candles illuminating
its branches. Henry and Charles smiled, both wrapping an arm around Fanny-
Charles somewhat more tentatively. Fanny didn’t seem to notice, completely
enraptured by the sight before them.
“I’ve never seen
one before,” she whispered reverently, looking far happier than all the
children around her.
“Let’s make it a
tradition, then,” Henry replied, kissing her cheek. “What do you say, Carlos?”
“It’s very…
German.” Charles responded awkwardly, trying and failing to be helpful.
Fanny just laughed,
still captivated. “Someday you’ll feel Christmas spirit, Mr. Sumner. Someday.”
“I assure you, Mrs.
Longfellow. This is the most I’ve felt in a very long time.”
Fanny and Henry
both looked up at him again with the warmest expressions on their faces. Charles returned the look, pulling them both a little closer.
As the three leaned
into one another, happily observing the odd new tradition in front of them, Charles couldn’t help but feel that this was exactly where he belonged.

Appointed to Marry
Alafia and Lójàjù were female and male friends living in Òjìjí town years ago, before the recent technological advancements and the introduction of the myriads of social media, it was Facebook that was first known in their town, Òjìjí before others started emerging like vk.com, Google+, Pinterest and many others too numerous to mention. The world has changed greatly and it is yet evolving everyday because the scientists have not relent in making life easier for all and sundry globally.
Lójàjù and  Àláfíà were very found of each other in their class at the College of Education, Òjìjí town. When they graduated, each left for its town. They were both thinking about of each other for a while after their graduation from the institution, but because distance has kept them apart now and with near no possibility of coming together as before, they were soon to grow over this thought about each other.
At each person's location, they were trying to make advancements academically and otherwise, because they do not want to put all their eggs in the same basket. What was eventually established was their academics as they got admitted into different universities to further their education. Not long afterwards they graduated from their respective universities. It was not too strenuous for them to secure employment at their respective location because they have moved up on the job seeking pyramidal level from more crowded regions to less crowded level.
After securing employment they were promoted at their respective places of work and their status and profiles started rising.
However both of them have difficulties getting someone to be married to where they were because those they were seeing do not fit in to the kinds of persons they will love to be settled with maritally.
When social media came on board, and people were saying there are many nude and other obscenities on those channels, both of them were not ready to be a part of the obscene development that has overtaken the world like torrents because they were both religious and of high moral standards.
They continued like this for years until one day that a lady who has been Alafia’s friend since when they were young came across her where she was walking. It was an un-expected contact. Alafia took the time off her work to take the lass out to one of the big eateries in town where they really had time to talk at length about their pasts, what they have been doing. It was during this time that Alafia knew her friend has been married to one man who has been troubling her when they were living together and she was happy that they were married because the guy is really a nice guy.
Soon enough this lady decided to leave and she was seen off. While leaving they exchanged their telephone numbers and promised to be talking. In the meanwhile the lady asked Alafia if she is on any of the social media. Alafia replied that she is not on any of them, because it is better to flee what is wrong than trying to manage it, “I do not want to be exposed to those nude pictures that is common on those social media”, Alafia enthused.
Her friend told her that it is not like that. When one joins social media you will look for those that match you, those of your faith, those who have the same ideologies and believes like you are to be friends with, and it is not important to be friends with many people, you can make the circle small by being friend to families and close friends. If you can give it a trial you will see that it worths it because through it you will be connected with old friends like me and can relive the past as often as you wish.
Alafia heard what she said and promised to give it a trial. That was how she got registered to one of the sites that her friend registered to. “At least she will be putting me through”, she reasoned as she joined the social media.
The social medium to which she joined has some other old friends there where a group has been formed for them through which they can be sharing things together. Alafia started enjoying this.
It was not long after this that the news of her being on the social media gets across to Lójàjù, he really wanted to see how Alafia looked now after decades of parting thus Lójàjù joined the social medium to which Alafia belong and they re-ignited their age long friendship again. Lójàjù was very elated to see that Alafia has not changed much, she added weight, but other than that not much of her has changed.
It was very surprising to him seeing this. From this group connection they started private discussions and friendships and they were getting on well with each other. Old friendships on fire, old friends are better than new friends they would say to each other. They started sharing common things started discussing about their private lives after all they were not all that strange from each other before.
They were living in the same building outside the campus while students at Òjìjí town and had shared many good moments together before their graduation from the institution.
Their seeing became close, and it became increasingly difficult for each of them to go out of the house nor go to bed without telling the other party though hundreds of miles away.
One day, Lójàjù decided to pay Alafia a visit in the town she was living in and working. He left his place very early having taken two days off the work he was doing and was ample ready for the hotel bills and other things before he sees her.
Soon enough he located her, and he discovered that she was sharing her 3 bedroom apartment with a friend who has just been employed in her work place. This member of staff is junior to Alafia, she has just finished her University too and was from a very low class in the society. Pending the time she will have money to get her own apartment, Alafia decided to offer her a room to be living with her in her apartment after all they were both females and single.
The lady was elated for this kind gesture shown unto her by her boss in the office.
Thus when Lójàjù called Alafia that he was in town, Alafia became speechless and was thinking he was around on official assignment, but when she heard that there was no official assignment that could have taken him to their town now, except if he registered with United Nations Voluntary work and he was posted there with others, but outside that, there is no way he could have come to the town. The kind of work that usually involves his office with the town she is working in is usually being handled by his juniors in the office.
Alafia could not hide her surprise. She showed him to different people in her office as a friend who has come to pay her a visit.
Everyone in her office was elated to see a young charming man paying her a visit. After taking him round, she decided to take her to the same eatery where she took the lady she unexpectedly came across months back to and through whom she registered into one of the social media which engineer though unknowingly this coming together again.
The social media have realy been of assistance, you are not different from the pictures I was seeing in the medium, Lójàjù said. Alafia replied that is true oh, you are also not different oh. Do you know I have been skeptical of becoming registered to any of the social media sites until lady Ibukun’s unexpected contact? The same with me, Lójàjù replied, in fact it was when I was told that you have registered to the site that I decided that I would be a member of the site, Lójàjù said.
“Uhmn! I take that with a pinch of salt, can’t someone else make you join the site?” Alafia asked.
My best of friends have made frantic efforts to make me join but all to no avail. All I used to tell them is I will give it a consideration. Since it is not by force neither is it going to fetch me money, they decided to let me be.
Well that is good. I feel elated that through me someone also joined the social blog to which I belong, Alafia said, as she continued to drive him through the town.
Alafia now has a car, she took the loan to get a car from the office, they were in her car talking and laughing. They were not that new to themselves, much so that the social medium has bridged the gap before their eventual seeing now.
Soon enough, Alafia parked at the eatery and they walked into the eatery with Lójàjù examining her from head to toe, saying within himself, that this lady is a paragon of beauty, her beauty is improving everyday.
They were in the eatery talking and laughing, as phones of either of them keep ringing, those calling them were the junior members of staff in their respective offices and they want them to put them through some things they are attending to since they were neither on seat nor in the premises. They will put them through and continue with their discussion.
The office hour was over and Alafia knows that she could not return to her office again, she asked where Lójàjù would put up for the night, thinking that he had a friend in the town, but when Lójàjù told her that he would be putting up at a hotel on the outskirts of the town, Alafia would not agree with him because she has an empty room in her apartment and she wants him to come and put up with her there.
They went to the hotel got his things from the hotel hand over the hotel room’s keys and left for her place. There they were able to see, discuss and play at length.
It was old friendship come alive.
It was not difficult for them to know that they are really meant for each other.
Two weeks after Lójàjù’s visit, Alafia also paid Lójàjù visit in his town, and it was all fun.
Lójàjù proposed to Alafia during her visit to him, and it did not take time for her to reply him.
Tumblr media
When others heard of this development, they were elated, very happy for them and what friends who had known them started saying was that, they are appointed to be husband and wife for no one could say they would come together again after about 12 years of separation.
