10 Great Things to Experience in Thailand
I was earlier asked to write my top ten things to do whilst in Thailand. I can tell you that is not an easy task. There are so many more that I wanted to include (Khao San Road, the national parks, Kanchanaburi province to name a few more!) but as the guy asking me had a gun to my head I suppose these are my top ten.
Originally I hadn’t planned to put them in any order, however having written it and looking it over, this could well be my order of priority. Now I take no responsibility if you try any of these and they suck. For me, they’re all great fun and things I’ve enjoyed on several occasions. I’m sure you’ll disagree with some and have your own ideas but hey, you’re not writing this, are you!
10. Take a boat tour through the canals of Bangkok – James Bond Style! This is awesome fun and gives you a completely new perspective of the city. View from below as the city passes you by and swap from boat to boat at the easy to use boat taxi stops. Seriously, you can get around the city easily, cheaply and without the insane traffic that Bangkok has in abundance.
Tumblr media
9. The Stunning North – Yes, I know that Thailand has more than its fair share of idyllic sandy beaches but it also has so much more to offer. Take a cheap flight or comfortable overnight train to Chiang Mai. Clean air, stunning mountains, friendly people and great accommodation await you. From Chiang Mai it’s easy to discover the forgotten Thailand.
8. Hug an elephant – Unfortunately there are many camps in Thailand that are there to train the elephants as performers. If you’re considering taking in a day or more with an elephant please do your homework and search out those who let the animals thrive in their natural surroundings. Possibly the best place to do this in Thailand is in the north eastern province of Surin, known as The Elephant Province.
Tumblr media
7. Koh Samui – this is a tourists island dream. Unspoilt, uncrowded beaches. Excellent value backpacker accommodation to the best 6* resorts. Easy to reach and fun. Make Koh Samui your island getaway if you’re looking for the ‘real’ Thai island escape.
6. Markets – Thailand has them everywhere. They’re fun, interesting and lively, offering everything from the latest DVD copies to fake brand name clothing to, well you name it and you can get it. Bangkok is also home to the worlds largest outdoor market – a bargain hunters paradise!
5. Street food – in this authors opinion, the best food you can buy is something that tastes good and won’t cost you a ridiculous sum of money. I give you the Thai Street Food Industry! On almost every street corner you can sample anything from deep fried scorpion to BBQ’d fresh fish, all for less than the cost of a Mars bar. What’s stopping you?
4. Full Moon Parties – OK, not for me anymore, too old now. But for anybody who likes to party, this is it. The original all-nighter with beach bucket (if you don’t know what one of those is, think sandcastle bucket full of a concoction of ice, alcohol and a mixer!), fluorescent paint, fire-breathing acrobats and the best sound systems on the planet! 50,000 people a month can’t be wrong. Right?!
3. Overnight Train – if you want to travel on a train, take an overnighter. Better still, take one close to a national holiday (if you can get a ticket!) Night trains are fun, comfortable and a great way to meet fellow travellers. They’re safe and clean, cheap and pretty much run on time. One of the best is the night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai as it reaches the mountains of the north just as the sun’s beginning to rise. Unforgettable!
2. Tuk Tuk – Yes, they’re extremely clichéd, but hey, as a traveller aren’t you supposed to experience the culture and history of a country? Well tuk tuks, until recently, were the mode of transport. Still in operation but numbers are dwindling so ride one while you can. Oh, and fix a price before you get in it and accept a ride! NOTE: if a tuk tuk driver offers you a full day trip for a ridiculously cheap sum of money, it’s a con. Don’t accept!
Tumblr media
1. The Grand Palace and the River of Kings – these are both a must-do in Thailand. Even if you ignore, or disagree, with the previous 9 points, you can’t disagree with this. The Grand Palace is a spectacle to behold. As it’s located so close to the River of Kings (or Chao Prayah to give it it’s real Thai name), to complete your day take a river boat taxi and watch one of Asia’s busiest shipping lanes in full swing.

Elephants are India's heritage animals and they greatly deserve to be treated with care, love and nobility. Such acts of violence and torture against these sentient creatures is totally RUTHLESS. . . #saveourelephants#elephant #elephantloverforever#elephants #savealltheanimals#stopviolence #loveelephantssomuchmore #dontkillcuteanimals#elephantsarelovely #saveanimalslives#art#inhumanehumans #mentalitymatters#artistxish#mandalaart #mandalas#mycreativity#creative#creativity #thailandelephant#artworks#mandaladotart #instaart#instagramart#instagram #instagood#instalife #insta #artstagram#instadaily . We have wanted to do some sort of elephant retreat for years, but it was very important for us to make sure that the elephant tourism we supported was ethical towards the elephants . Almost everwhere in South East Asia offers Elephant camps, but many of them force the elephants to do tricks, paint pictures, or offer rides to tourists. While this might seem harmless, The training process to get the elephants to learn these "tricks" is quite brutal. . So after a lot of research we discovered the Elephant Nature Park, about and hour north of Chiang Mai, Thailand. This park has rescued elephants from less than favorable practices and given them a place to live in peace, where they are not forced to perform. We decided to join the more personal Karen Elephant retreat, offered by the company, And couldn't have been happier with our experience. . I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic in the comments . . . #elephant #elephants #elephantlove #stoppoaching #thailandelephant #thailand #chiangmai #ig_thailandia #responsibletourism #tourtheplanet #aroundtheworldpix #travelingourplanet #awesome_photographers #earthofficial #earthescope #earthfever #wildlife #elephantnaturepark #cooltravelpix #tourtheplanet #majestic_earth #amazing_pictures #lonelyplanet ##bbctravel #elephantlove #wonderful_earthpix #gettyimages #discoverglobe (at Chiang Mai, Thailand) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bur-bzah7kI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1k8qs2xsbulv4

#thailandelephants This time 3 years ago I was playing, bathing, and eating lunch with elephants in Thailand. I was actually teaching in Bangkok, and had 3 days off so I flew to Chiangmai Mai to explore. It was one of my favorite experiences, and quickly became one of my favorite places to visit when in Thailand. In many ways it seems so far long ago, and yet like it happened yesterday. I don’t think I’ll be bathing an elephant this Memorial Day weekend, but I’m sure there will be just as much joy, love and if I’m lucky mud involved 🤣 Happy Memorial Day Weekend!! #tymihoward #yogabender #yogateachertraining #yogaeverydamnday #yogavibes #warriorsofthedivine #baliyoga #theyogabarn #tymihowardyoga #godwinks #guruvyoga #strongsexysoulful #manifest #thailand #iloveelephants #elephants 🐘🐘🐘🐘 (at Manifest Yoga with Tymi Howard) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPdEeQUNCrn/?utm_medium=tumblr

The tusks of an elephant are modified incisors that grow throughout an elephant’s lifetime. An adult male’s tusks grow about 7 inches a year. Tusks are used to dig for salt, water and roots, to debark trees, to clear a path and occasionally in fights. Additionally, they are used for marking trees to establish an elephant’s territory. Welcome to trunk.
Hello and thanks for clicking on our little blog, our little space on the web to offer news and updates on what’s going on each day at trunk,  what we’re up too, what our guests are up too, what the elephants are up too, and more.
You’ll get a genuine insight in to the day to day running of an award-winning, ethical and responsible travel company dedicated to the ongoing support of rescued and captive elephants across South East Asia.
From company meetings, to our plans for the future, to video interviews with our guests, plus more general and insightful information on travelling and experiencing life in this incredible sub-continent.
Our plan is to showcase a wide array of what we’re going through as we work our way up to being the go-to company for any individual or travel brand looking to incorporate anything elephant-related in their tours.
Trunk has over 40 years experience in helping to shape how travel works with elephants and whilst we all want to see elephants returned to the wild, that’s simply not option given where countries are with over-development, de-forestation, lack of poaching and hunting controls, pesticides in farming and many more reasons.
We work with local experts in each country to ensure that what we’re doing and how we do is the best way forward. We guarantee that everything we do has been checked by the relevant professionals. We take advice, develop and learn. We’re certainly not fly-by-nighter’s looking to make a fast-buck off the exploitation of the elephants, our heart is well and truly in ensuring that the elephants and the local communities benefit positively from the work that we do.
Please feel free to ask questions. Let us know if there’s anything that you would like to see more of, or learn more about, better still come and meet us and see everything for yourself!

These elephants are all rescued or saved from the tourist industry where they’ve been exploited and not cared for. One of our favourite experiences ever was getting to spend the day with them, feeding and playing with them then swimming in the river! @Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, Thailand 🐘🐘

Regrann from @thailandelephants - Dodo needs the help of @kindredspiritelephantsanctuary but they can only do it with our help... “Dodo has been living and working in riding camps for over 10 years, very recently he was told to leave the camp after becoming antagonized from being over worked and confined. This is when his owner approached us asking for our help, he wants to give Dodo the best life he can, whilst also ensuring that he and those around him are safe. Our co-founder Sombat and the mahouts on our program have known Dodo and gained his trust for many years, we and his owner are confident that they can provide the best care for him.” Can you spare a few quid to help secure him a life in the forest? 🐘❤️🐘 We’ve spent many a years working with the guys at KSES so believe 100% in their ethics, morals and ambitions and know any donation will be spent directly on funding Dodos return to the forest! https://www.gofundme.com/bring-an-elephant-home-fund #elephant #charity #travelthailand #elephants #thailandelephants #rideabikenotanelephant #forest #returntotheforest #elephantlove #chiangmai #fundraiser #gofundme #gofundmedonations #jungle #donation #donate #forthelephants @kindredspiritelephantsanctuary @gofundme@imaZnowflake - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/BmTjQrHH_E5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=q38vkswyx64z
