Amphibia Weekly Season 3 Reviews: Fight at the Museum/Temple Frogs: A Most Jellical Hell
Tumblr media
Hello all you hoppy people! We’re on to Week 3 of my weekly coverage of Season 3! I’m Jake, I review stuff and it’s time for a bit of news and speculation before we move on to today’s episodes.
So picking up from last week where we got the episode titles for the second half of Season 3a, we now have the summaries to go with them, so it’s time to ooo and ahh over the latest episode summaries and see what’s ahead fo rour heroes, and speculate what that might entail.
Mr. X": Anne takes the Plantars to the movies, while the Boonchuys try to stop a government agent from finding them.
I’m mostly excited about this one because RU MOTHERFUCKING PAUL IS COMING. I haven’t watched Drag Race, you may now boo, but I love him in anything she does. Their work as Jackie Slithersteen in Harvey Beaks was a series highlight both times they showed up and it’ll be intresting to see them in a more serious role. Also it’ll be fun to see the Plantars at a movie theater. I love a good movie theater shenanigans story.
"Sprig's Birthday": Anne tries to give Sprig a great Earth birthday.
Nothing really to say here other than this one’s probably gonna hurt.
"Spider-Sprig": Determined to make his mark on Earth, Sprig becomes a superhero.
Tumblr media
I haven’t gotten to mention it on this blog as I haven’t covered anything Spider-Man adjacent, but I absolutley LOVED spider-man and hoped this would be some sort of take on that. And given we see a doc ock esque guy using the Annsterminator’s arm in the season trailer, this is going to be REALLY fun.  And while the title could just be “oh generic because he’s a superhero” Sprig DOES have most of Peter and Ben’s powers: he can crawl on walls, has incredibly agility and speed, and his tounge is a good subsittue for webs. He only lacks the strength and spider sense, which give shim a mild handicap but nothing he can’t handle. Point is i’m so ready for this.
"Olivia & Yunan": Back in Amphibia, Olivia and Yunan try to rescue Marcy.
Dammit I already used the sinister bug saying things were good.... hmmm
Tumblr media
Haven’t broken this one out in a while. Or the bug one come to think of it. But yes we finally get the incredibly gay rescue episode.. which is bound to end very horribly because we’ve seen the trailer. They PROBABLY shoudln’t of shown nightmare marcy. Just saying. Kinda spoils the suprise.
"Hollywood Hop Pop": Hop Pop tries to make it as an actor in Hollywood.
This one was inevitible and will likely be fun. Next.
"If You Give a Frog a Cookie": Anne trusts a questionable scientist who may have found a way to get them to Amphibia.
KATE MICCUI BABY! FUCK YES. God her and keith david on the same show it boggles the mind...
Tumblr media
"Froggy Little Christmas": Anne attempts to surprise her mom with a Thai Go float for the Christmas parade while the Plantars struggle to understand the holiday. Meanwhile, King Andrias plans a deadly surprise.
The big one! A heartwarming christmas story, rebcca sugar writing a song and PLOT ADVANCMENT. Who could ask for a better christmas present?
So with all that covered it’s time to dive into this weeks’ episodes!  Join me under the cut, full spoilers, etc etc.
Tumblr media
Fight at the Museum:
We open with an answer to one of the most burning questions of the season: Where do the Plantars sleep in the Boonchuy house?
Tumblr media
Look we had no real clear layout of the Boonchuy house and no real answer as Anne was apparently sleeping alone in “The New Normal’. I can wait on the other stuff because I KNOW we’ll get lore answers eventually because this show is fairly consistent at giving them, just at a slow pace between one off adventures, something this very episode lampshades in it’s own way.
The answer is their all crashing in anne’s room, but all plenty comfy: Sprig has a beanbag, Polly’s sharing the catbed with Domino, which .... just.. just look at it.
Tumblr media
My heart just exploded from adorable. And Hop Pop is , judging by the first ep alternating between the floor and Anne’s bed. Seriously the boonchuy’s HAVE a couch he could use that.
Anne however has been awake all night, can relate, trying to find a way back to Amphibia to save her girlfriends, the town and you know both worlds from the sexy wrath of Keith David as a Salamander.
But the realistic consequences of running 24 hours for several days in a row, especially as a child who needs rest, are catching up with her and she’s barely concious the next day, still hoping to spend it the same way she spent the night. The Plantars.. want to watch a british soap opera. My mom could relate... and so can I just replace “British soap opera” with “sitcom about the deep state”.  Hop Pop points out the honest facts: they’ve ALSO been working hard to find a way home, if offscreen, but they can’t burn themselves out. Trust me it’s not fun. I’ve burned myself out doing this and I don’t hold the fate of countlres worlds in my hands. I’ll get into the why of Anne’s desperation in a bit.
Mrs. Boonchuy roasts her daughter about researching for once before agreeing with Hop Pop. She needs to relax for once.. and Mrs. B needs to clean all the slime that’s built up in the house so their asses are going to the museum. Anne needs to catch up on missed School, the plantars can learn more about earth , and The Boonchuy House can stop smelling like a ninja turtle. Everyone wins!
We get an adorable montage of the plantars enjoying the museum while Anne nearly passes out a bunch: Sprig marvels at dinosaurs (”Guess you had a monster problem too huh?”), Polly relates to cavemen and Hop Pop is horrified to find earth people think the earth is round (It is)... and signals to Anne he needs to be kept as FAR away from the internet and B.O.B. as froggily possible.
Anne however is still obesseivly researching... until they find a clue int he museum itself and we get a rather huge move forward in the overall lore:  Said pot depicts Andrias’ frog friend who looks a LOT like Sprig coming out of a portal, gifting the box to a bunch of vikings. She DID steal it after all as I suspected.. I never thought Andrias lied about that outright.. he simply didn’t see she did it to PROTECT people from him and his god.
They then run into the Museum’s curator, Dr. Jan, an utterly nice woman who has a side hobby in crytozoology and is utterly curious abotu this mysterioius pot and would be HAPPY to help them. Anne turns her down and shoos her away, while Hop Pop wants to know why. \
Anne dosen’t know if she can trust her.. and that’s not only fair but ties into the very reason her obession is at it’s peak. It’s something that hit me this episode> For us True Colors happened about 5 months ago. We’ve had time to obesses over it sure but as simple observers we could move on to other shows and nonsense. For Anne? It was a just a little over a week ago BOTH her best friends/love interests deeply betrayed her, she fought off an invasion, found out the kindly king helping her was a tyrannical  monster bent on multiversal conquest, thought her best friend died, saw her new robot brother actually die,  went super sayian god super sayian, had one of the loves of her life stay behind so she could escape and saw the other stabbed in the gut while she was helpless to stop it. All in one fucking day, most of that in the span of a couple of hours. And she hasn’t REALLY gotten a break since: she had to emotionally reunite with her parents, spend hours explaining to them what happened after they had the whole frogs thing sprung on them by Hop Pop’s incompetence, was locked in her house for a day, had to fight off a killer robot, found out her new powers really hurt and is deeply disturbed by them, had to keep the plantars from getting themselves killed constantly, barely escaped a mall, had to stop her little brother’s shenanigans by driving a runaway truck with no breaks, and then had 8 cavities removed in one day just to top it all off.
Tumblr media
Like when your watching it week to week it dosen’t really register how much trauma this poor child’s been through and how short the time span’s been till you sit back and REALLY think about it. Though I did think about the timeline.. and by that was reminded by the episode list Reunion takes place three months after Anne arrived on amphibia, not only meaning the series has ALWAYS had a strict timeline, but that season 2 takes place over two months, perfectly slotting everything into place.
Point is she’s been through a LOT and after the two people she loves most and the last kindly stranger she met stabbed her in the back and into her gut, it’s understandable why she wouldn’t be quick to trust someone she’s only met 5 seconds ago. She could be a goverment agent or something. They don't know.
Anne being cautious here, especially since Hop Pop has the GALL to call her paranoid.... a week after again he WATCHED MARCY GET STABBED IN THE GUT BY THE MAN THEY ALL TRUSTED AFTER MARCY REVEALED SHE SENT THEM ALL TO AMPHIBIA ON PURPOSE.
Tumblr media
But her plan.. isn’t as acceptable. She wants to be bi, do crimes and rob the museum at night. Hop Pop BARELY agrees to it while naturally Sprig and Polly are on board. I’m pretty sure when Poly conquers the world at 12 be gay do crimes will be the worldwide motto. Sprig just likes to be an ally.
At any rate our froggy heroes deck themselves out in matching emo hoodies anne had because.. well she WAS dating Sasha, and rips once up for polly. Anne of course, having already had 80 outfit changes in her backpack alone, has a classic break in black ops outfit.
The break in goes suprisingly well. Phase One is to distract the Guards... which would be a genuine issue if they weren’t at this level of competence
So they simply have hop pop distract them by pretending to be a cat...
Tumblr media
Look you’ve seen the top, you know what he actually looks like, I know what he actually looks like. You already have the jellical nightmares. I’m not giving you more by giving it more time to sear it’s way into your soul. I will say they did hilariously mimic the stage makeup of cats well. I’ll also say they did well giving my worst fears and nightmares form.
The kids roles are SLIGHTLY less traumatizing. Sprig takes out the camera’s with his tounge and Polly turns out to have razor sharp teeth because apparently Spirg and Polly’s mom had an affair with a Critter. I mean she’s ball shaped, has razor sharp teeth, and hungers for blood. The signs were there all along this just proves it.
So our heroes sucessfully break and enter, and get the vase. But as Sprig notes this being a heist their contractually obligated to have a twist.. and this one was set up earlier as we saw the Annsterminator forced to patch into the local antenna to scan for them, as it’s scanner was damaged in the fight. But it finds them via the one security camera Sprig DIDN’T sabotage, meaning he finds them, sets off the alarms and leaves our heroes trapped.
The result is an AWESOME fight across the museum as the plantars use EVERYTHING they can. From the cool stacking attack using armor, swords and a mace, to anne grabbing a sword again once again proving her strength to hop pop USING A MOTHERFUCKING GUILLOTINE TO CHOP OFF AN ARM WHILE SHOUTING EAT THE RICH.
Tumblr media
Cumulating in Anne holding Annsterminator off while the plantars DROP A DINOSAUR SKELETON ON HIM.
Tumblr media
Sadly bones don’t beat metal... they can beat off metal but that’s a whole other discussion, point is the Annesterminator escapes and nearly chokes the life out of Anne till Dr. Jan comes in along with the security so he books it out of there the only way he knows how
Tumblr media
Dr. Jan quickly covers for them with the guards who are luckily still this level of smart
Tumblr media
So they buy it, especially since the plantars had to ditch the disguises to be effective. Thankfully she’s not mad about the damage or almost theft and more curious as to what the hell any of this is, as you or I would be let’s be fair here.
So they fill her in offscreen and on screen she offers to help, notcing Anne is near passing out and needs rest before they can get to work and Hop Pop points out the simple truth: They can’t do this alone. And it didn’t hit me before, because they’ve come so far.. but they really can’t. I’m so used to shows and media like this where it’s left on the teen protaganists and maybe one or two adult shoulders I forget sometimes.. those people have limites. The Plantar-Boonchuy’s are plenty badass, talented cooks and all around just the best people warts and all, pun very much intedned... but at the end of the day none of them are, as far as we’ve been told as far as Anne’s parents are concerned, Engeineers, scientists+-, historians, superheros, sorcerers supermee.. the kind of people who can help them get back where they once belonged. As we’ve seen the best Anne can do is research, and she’s looking into something that is, at least as far as the public knows, impossible, meaning at best there’s a portal at a goverement black site.  With Jan being a historian and into this sort of weird paranormal stuff, she has contacts and tools to help them. She can’t whip them up a portal.. but having someone who can look into Amphibia’s history with earth is better than nothing.
So Anne accepts it, seeing Jan IS genuinely+ as good as she acts and agrees to her quid pro quo of sleeping in exchange for working on this. That night Jan studies the pot and takes Anne’s suggestion of running a black light over it for hidden messages, because why not. Shockingly there is.
Tumblr media
Fight at the Museum was excellent, letting the emotinal consequences of last season hit Anne in a subtle way. I do feel they need to talk about it eventually especially since we STILL haven’t heard from either of the girls parents. The fight scenes were also visually spectacular as always and cleverly used the museum setup, as well as having the Annesterminator loose an arm as setup for later episodes as we’ve seen. All in all another stellar episode from the show’s best season.
Tumblr media
Temple Frogs:
Picking up where we left off, Anne wakes up rested, refreshed and ready to eat that horse. And Jan messaged her about the temple so the Plantars are all excited to go learn about it. Given this is a children’s cartoon you just KNOW that means the adults in Anne’s life who aren’t frogs have other plans that are going to lead to a life lesson.
Sure enough the Boonchuy’s are headed to the Thai Temple for market day, a day for the local Thai Community to gather to set up stalls, participate in activities relating to said culture and in general just bask in the joy of community. Anne being a teenager with a world saving mission wants no real part of this but the Plantars do and Mrs.B wants her ot stay AT LEAST an hour. Still no name, though apparently Mr. B’s is Jeff so that’s at least ONE down. I missed it but apparently this episode reveals it.
Anne reluctantly agrees and the family heads down to Temple. The Plantars end up feeling right at home as the number of stalls and sense of community feel just like their own market days back home. Anne has grown jaded with it mostly due to having gone here her whole life. We even see an adorable picture of her as a younger kid. It’s precious.
The Plantars are more than happy to explore her culture, respectfully, and Anne lets them loose since they have an hour to kill and she’s on Sample duty.  The following part is easily the best and most charming part of the episode: The Plantars each find a part of Thai culture to enjoy and fit in with, without approrating it, and the local Thai community warmly welcomes them to join in.  It allows Matt to show off his cultural heritage and a bit of his own past, clearly having gone to similar gatherings at some point, and share them with the children, teens, and grown ass peoples (points to self) watching this.  I fully learned stuff with this as Sprig and Hop Pop’s activities are things i’d genuinely never heard of and googled to get the names right as while i’m fine with missing a character name or something, as this is usually from memory and on the day the episode comes out (this one’s way later than usual because the last two days have been kinda busy). It happens. But I flat out refuse to misspell something that people put their heart and soul into. It’s just genuinely nice to learn something about a culture that’s not my own, to learn neat stuff I never knew and genuinly apricate it. I honestly need to do this more often, as I genuinely LIKE learning new stuff and bits of history, in the most respectful way possible off course.
Sprig wonders around till he finds a game of Takraw, a kick based ball and net sport. It follows similar rules to volleyball except you can only use your feet to hit the ball, making it far more acrobatic and a sport i’m now fully interested in looking into as the idea of a bunch of talented athletes doing spider-man style moves while hitting a ball only with kicks sounds utterly awesome. And keep in mind i’m not a sports guy normally, i’m only now casually intrested in Soccer/Football because of Ted Lasso and Wrestling because of the hard works that goes into it, the intresting histories and the nice dollop of bollocks. So the fact this show got me intrested in a sport at all is a feat. Sprig casually kicks a ball back, already having the impressive talents for acrobatics and strong legs needed for the sport, and is naturally invited to join in.
Hop Pop is next and he finds Khon Dancing, where dancers act out the life of the god Rama via dramatic, well timed movements whle wearing glittery costumes and really awesome looking traditional masks. While not mentoined in the episode the story is told by singers on the side whlie the actors pantomime everything else. Hop Pop is naturally drawn to anything theater and fits in perfectly.
Finally there’s Polly who finds herself at Thai School, where they teach thai to children every week, Anne herself later remarking she used to go (Thoguh failed to really learn more than a few phrases. Turns out Polly is a natural, having learned the language from Mrs. B’s soap operas, and thus impresses the other kid.. minus one calling her a show off but that one can be thrown in the hole with Polly’s other enemies when she conquers our puny planet.
Anne notices her mom giving back a LOT of tupperware and getting some back, but thinks nothing of it. Me on the other hand? I got EXACTLY what this meant and reacated accordingly.
Tumblr media
Anne finds out it’s only been ten minutes and decides fuck it she’s leaving and gathering everyone.  I was dreading these next scenes as I figured , given the conventions of this kind of plot, Anne would drag her family away from their apprecation of her culture and get called out by them AND her mom for being an insesntive dip. But Matt Braly’s too clever for that. Instead as Anne’s clearly touched to see each of her surrogate family immersing themselves in her culture and truly loving every minute of it, and seeing her community gladly embrace them. She dosen’t bother them or even let her presecene be known, she just watches fondly and let’s each one go about there way. She’s especailly proud of Polly, baffled because Anne herself barely learned any Thai, but still proud she’s fluent in it. It shows anne’s heart: She gets that while the Plantars clearly miss home.. they likely also  miss their community and is glad hers is helping fill the void.
So Anne decides to fly solo only to run into her mom whose rightfully pissed Anne couldn't wait AN HOUR. The episode really does well setting up Mrs. B as being in the right too. I point this out because WAY too many cartoons have the adult be right because adult. This isn’t AS prevalent nowadays but growing up in the 90′s and 00′s I saw this a lot. Here Mrs. B is right.. because she’s right.  Before we even get to the episodes heartwarming and heartwrenching reveal, the fact is she acknowledges how important this is, even without knowing the full stakes, and gladly compromises to let Anne only stay an hour, so Anne still helps her and reunites with the community (having gotten heavily cheek pinched by old ladies earlier), but gets to go get the important info they need. The Plantars are fully willing to take the detour to the temple for most of the day and offered no resistance, so there’s no making them feel bad. The only one who’s impatient here is Anne and while understandable, it’s not really excusable given Jan didn’t say anything like “I might of found a portal home”. There’s no immediate payoff to whatever she’s found, and thus no reason it can’t wait an hour and help her family out and reunite with a bunch of people who thought she was lost and hurting, which to a degree she was.
So even without the next reveal, Anne was kind of a jerk for not staying and helping. The next reveal though clinches it: As I guessed the tupperware was all from dishes the community cooked for the Boonchuy’s while anne was missing, so they wouldn’t have to in the deep depression of loosing their daughter. Not only that the whole community stepped in and helped do shifts at the restraunt and whatever Jeff and Mrs. B needed during the worst moments of their life. And it’s very telling Mrs. B DIDN’T tell Anne till it was clear she needed to know. SHe didn’t want to burden her daughter with what they went through because Anne didn’t go on purpose. It was an accident, she didn’t do anything wrong, and she worked hard , as she likely outlined, to get back. Telling her how much her absence hurt them was unecessary. But telling her now, so she can now how much the community helped them, without asking anything in return, how much these kind people  made it so the Boonchuy’s surviived the worst 5 months of their lives with their buisness and sanity in tact, that was necessary. And Anne DOES geninely feel bad about being a dick about it now she realizes not only just what her parents went through, but how much this community really matters.
Bigger issues crop up though as it turns out the Annesterminator has dragonfly drones it sent after her. Anne brushes them off as being from the school newspaper, some reporters were seen earlier trying to get the scoop on her absence. This also puts her disappearance to me around late may early june given we have the Christmas special coming, and the plantars had to get back for the harvest, with the Shut In, , non canon or not, taking place in october and just after the Plantars returned. Which would mean these eps take place in early novemeber or late october. Look I have all eterneity and a few more weeks of episode to figure out the timeline. Point is dragon flies a comin and Anne prepares for a fight.. as does the temple. You mess with one of them, you mess with all of them and EVERYONE organizes to fight, with Hop Pop, Sprig and Polly putting their new skills to work: Hop pop uses cermonial swords to cut down dragonflies, spirg and his new team use the ball to take some out, and Polly organizes everyone. Everyone elses uses pots, pans and wahtever to kick ass. IT’s a sight to behold. Sprig and Polly finish them off with a Takraw Spike Special, and our heroes win. Unfortunately their also fully unmasked in front of a large crowd, and we get that close up from above.
The good news though is the community warmly embraces the Plantars and dosen’t need to know where they came from: They stood with them when they needed to and very clearly took care of Anne. That’s all they need to welcome them. Anne is touched by this and decides to stay both out of respect for her community, and because it’s now not just hers.. but the Plantars too. Plus more people she can honestly tell the frog thing to so that’s nice.
She gets karmically rewarded for this as Dr. Jan couldn’t wait, and having gotten a text from Anne earlier, drove down here. So Anne not only gets to bask in community but gets her clue. ducking behind a tree, Jan reveals the black light message.. and it’s nothing she can read. But thankfully Anne has Marcy’s journal.

Look if the shipping wasn’t at critical mass enough now Anne just.. casually  has Marcy’s things in her bag. Though frankly wanting to run away together, blushing a lot together and ... let’s just save time and say just about every scene with Anne and Marcy kinda already told us everything, this is just more blatant evdience their lesbians together.
The message says “Find the mother of olms, she’ll lead you to her destiny” So they have a CLUE... but no earthly idea who she is and I only know what an olm is because of the recap page for this episode on TV Tropes. It’s a species of Salamander. Still it’s better to have SOME direction than none and wether this gets the Plantars home or helps them be Andrias it’s SOMETHING. So point for Jan and for Anne.
Thai Temple is an utterly fantastic episode. It embraces Thai culture, gives us more text to what went on while Anne was gone, has another fantastic fight scene and is just a joy to watch, bucking most of the conventions fo rthis kind of plot to create an utterly heartwarming tribute to Thai Culture. Easily a contender for my best of the year list and that is a tight race and I suspect with only more episodes left it’s only gonna get tighter. I had to give this show an extra slot, 6 instead of 5, simply because it has SO many episodes this year.
Next Time: The Moment’s we’ve been waiting for. Polly tries to rebuild Frobo with the help of some cosplayers, while the Boonchuy’s FINALLY find out the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Bring it on.
If you enjoyed this review consider commissioning an episode, as I haven’t covered any of season 1, and am happy to, along with several ducktales episodes and all kinds of good disney and non-disney stuff. Just shoot me a message or ask, pricing details are on my blog. Or if you want a guaranteed review a month and for me to review an amphibia a month, just shoot over to my patreon. Just one dollar a month will get me to review one episode of amphibia season one (and that’s aa half hour by the way not the 15 minutes0, guaranteed, and 5 gets you a guranteed slot a month. A bit more gets the owl house. So join on up

Hello! Can u please write Helena Bertinelli with a Fem!reader tomboy that's a muay thai fighter and look like super cool and cold, but in the apartment its a very soft and lovely girlfriend with Helena? (And how the birds will react when them met her) Thank you,I Love you writing and HELENA IS SUCH A BAE!!! THIS GAL NEED MORE LOVE AND SUPPORT!❤
masterlist | word count: who fucking knows | 🏷 @kurreapormaranet @emofairygay | a/n: ;0 There are some things you might want to look up on youtube so you have a general idea of what’s happening. Clinch positions, tactical stand ups, thips
The rink’s seats filled massively, stretching to every wall that bounced the cheering back and forth.
The overall mission seemed simple, but it had Helena dreading this moment since Harleen explained what needed to happen.
The trust fund brat of the devilish Rossini family kidnapped the Rossini’s pride and joy: their little baby girl, Ayala. Ayala Rossini, four years old, is the Brat’s younger half sister and the new written in heir of the Rossini fortune. The Brat, Carmen, had been written out of the will after she kidnapped the new little bird Batman was keeping under his wing. She’d been sloppy and left behind all marks of her family’s (unbeknownst) involvement. She made serval costly mistakes which included Batman’s uncovering of the Rossini family’s plans of Gotham, Star, and Jump city. Half the family became arrested.
Carmen was all but disowned by her father, whom she already resented for marrying another woman so quick after the death of her mother. To get her revenge, she kidnapped Ayala.
So, Mr and Mrs Rossini employed Harley and her rag tag team of anti-hero thugs.
To get Ayala back, the girls would have to go undercover.
Their heroic deed would get them 30k each, so that was good enough. The Rossinis are precise and focuses; they’d been willing to pay as much as they had to in order to ensure the safety of their little crime lord baby.
Now Harley had her connections. She knew a guy who knew a guy who saw a friend with a girl outside of the 31 Flavors ice cream shoppe, and this girl just happened to know that Carmen spends her free time hosting epic fights in the secret tunnels of Smallville.
It’s a long ways away from Gotham, but is a perfect place to host such gatherings. The fights are frightfully violent and brutal. Also very illegal. No one would ever know that beneath the wheat and corn fields of Lil’ Ol’ Smallville county lays an intricate mafia maze.
Carmen Rossini is notorious for entertaining the winners to a “fine dinner with wine”. The rumors go that she runs an entire harem of Thai Fighting women, using them for sexual favors and personal security.
The entire mission is actually depending on that rumor.
The plan was to send in Dinah as a participant in the rink and hope she would win and earn the attention of Carmen.
But then Dinah got bronchitis. It was a nasty case, too, in which she wouldn’t stop coughing and hacking up green stuff into tissues.
The entire thing would have been called off if you hadn’t admitted that you are, in fact, trained in Muay Thai.
You’re positive that Helena would have rather kept this a secret, because she doesn’t like putting you in harms way. It’s a nuisance to have the world’s most protective girlfriend. Heaven forbid you even get a paper cut, else she’d make you wear rubber gloves while you read a book.
The entire group (save Helena) jumped for the chance to replace Dinah with you. You’d do perfect, Harley said, sounding so confident.
You intended to be flawless in the ring.
You’d not competed since high school, when Muay Thai was still just a recreational hobby. You’d had your wins and losses, but that was before you grew up to spend majority of your time fighting mafia crime lords.
Once Dinah officially relinquished her role of the mission, you took to the heavy bags. The repetitions became intense and harsh in the following weeks. You spent every night limping into bed.
Your sweet whispers that begged Helena for a soothing massage fell onto her deaf ears. She is stubborn, and she had been attempting to force you out of this competition since the day you’d agreed to it.
You were not afraid of Carmen, or anyone else she’d make you fight against. For the sake of the little Ayala, you would do this. Besides, you tell yourself, what’s the worst that could happen? With the Birds and their abilities, there isn’t much that could happen.
Nothing would slide through the cracks.
Hopefully.
The day did come faster than you’d imagined, though. The drive to Smallville was tense, especially in the backseat where Helena was frostily ignoring you.
Harleen was road raging, passing every trucker on the two way road that didn’t exceed 65 miles an hour.
“You know the speed limit is 45, right?” Montoya asked after she had taken a long drag of a cigarette. She had her legs propped up on the dash. Between her and Harley sat Cass, who was oblivious to the chaos around her as she sang along to a pop Spanish song. “Yeah, and?” Harley quipped. She cast her bright eyes towards Montoya, a wicked smile playing on her lips.“You gonna arrest me?”
Montoya couldn’t do much but sigh in defeat. If Harley didn’t mind crashing, then she didn’t either.
Between the bickering and the loud singing of the three front passengers, you and Helena were sitting silently in the very back seats. Your head was leaned up against the window which rattled as the tires of Harley’s ‘64 Starfire rolled across the gravely road.
Helena had been refusing to speak to you since the fight you got into last night. It was a real fight. She’s made it clear that she’s against you fighting in Carmen’s ring, and is especially against you joining her harem.
You’d first thought she was afraid of disloyalty; you had promised her that you wouldn’t ever cheat on her, even if it was for a mission. But it became revealed that’s not what Helena was worried about.
She feared for your life. She fears for your life every single day. No matter how small of a task, she can’t help but worry. She lost her mother, father, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles; everyone. She’d been so helpless. She could only watch as she became the sole Bertinelli.
Helena couldn’t live on if something happened to you.
The fight ended on a confusing note. It didn’t end, per say, and you two did sleep in the same bed. However, neither of you has said a word to each other. You tried this morning, but she’d given you the snippy, cold shoulder.
As much as you hate putting her through so much anxiety, you know that you can’t back down. A girl’s life is at stake; it’s not the money you care about. Not to mention Carmen Rossini is about to make the top 50 worst criminals in Gotham County.
Harley rolled the car to a stop around a patch of gravel and dust. Everyone climbs out, rocks crunching under their shoes as they stretch and look around.
“Where is it?” Cass asks, shoving her hands in the pockets of her loose denim jacket. Her chapped lips are stained blue from the tootsy pop that she’d crunched on in the car. The soggy stick now hung from her lips, as if she had been imitating Montoya’s cigarette.
Harley locked, double checked, then re locked, then triple checked her car. She turned around, using her hands to shield her vision as she scanned the open wheat fields. “Dunno,” she admitted. “I guess I supposed someone woulda been here to meet us.”
You shifted on your feet. You wanted to try and make Helena happy before you’d at least go inside and get in the ring. The only issue is, she’ll only be happy if your forfeit now.
You would not.
Across the way, by a few yards at most, a rustling came through the wheat that came at least up to your hips.
A young man emerged; he approached the Birds with a guarded look that furrowed his thick, blond eyebrows. “You are Carmen’s guests, yes?”
He spoke with a thick accent. His honey blond hair contrasted his coffee brown features. He had a handsome face with a strong jaw, but something about him seemed off. He seemed intimidated despite being taller and broader than most.
“We are,” you answered for the Birds. “I am Y/n. I am the contestant.”
The man beckons you all forward. Helena glared at him, her hand steadily tapping the outside of her thigh. She was prepared to draw her gun and shoot anyone that could get in her way. In your way.
You tasted a bitter foam in your mouth as you attempted to stop Helena without raising too much attention.
“We––I––am here for the  Carmen’s...event.”
The honey blond man tallied the Birds on his fingers, visibly distressed. “I do not thinka’ Miss Rossini expected so many of you...”
After a brief, strangled silence, the man shook his head and waved his arm along to escort you. “The bunker is just this way,” he explained. Harley and Cass walked after him.
Helena meets your eyes. Her gaze is firm, and maybe even angry. No way could you defuse that situation while still heading into the rink.
The wheat and grass crunched under your boots as you marched across the pace-by-pace clearing. A trap door in the ground lifted up swiftly, silently, as if they grease the hinges every damn day.
You remembered how this turned out for Suzie Salmon; casting one more look over your shoulder, you assured yourself with the presence of Helena.
Down the hatch, under the ground, you, Harley, Cass, Helena, and Mr Cannoli over here shuffled down the hall to a big dressing room. The entire layout felt more like a stadium then an underground crime rink. The dressing room has lush sofas and fur blankets; in the corner a SodaStream is mounted on an Ikea book table.
“Miss Rossini will join you shortly,” Cannoli-guy told you, nodding his head regally. He bowed out of the room, shutting the heavy oak door after him.
Cass jumped on the sofa. She sprawled out over the furs, kicking her muddy Chuck Taylors up. “Luxury.”
Harley snipped to Cass to get her dirty little feet off the merchandise.
You took a seat in the swivel chair in front of the large mirror. It looked like pure Broadway with the heavy lightbulbs that wreathed the glass.
“Can’t say they don’t know how to entertain a guest,” Harley squealed as she migrated to the SodaStream. “They got homemade cream soda!”
Cass jumped off the sofa to run after Harley.
Instead of facing you, Helena took a heavy seat on the couch. Her legs spread out, looking spectacularly muscular in her tight, black pants.
Unfortunately, you’re too annoyed with her to go lounge in her lap.
As much as you’d like to make amends, you know the only way to do that would be to back down. You’re going into that rink.
The door flew open at the second Harley had poured herself and Cassie a drink.
Carmen Rossini strutted in and you stared in awe. You tried not to let your jaw drop. Tall, voluptuous. Her hair is wavy auburn, her eyes deepest green.
She looked at you immediately. Reaching out for you as if you were the messiah, she chuckled. “You’re even cuter in person! Oh, sweetie, you––you do know how to drive a hard bargain. Your agent Harleen contacted me, where is she?”
Harley waved her hand from the corner. “That would be me. Ain’t Y/n a real figure?”
Scowling, Helena crossed her legs. She glared up at Carmen, and you remembered that Carmen is doing what Helena hates the most; complimenting you.
It’s not so much that Helena doesn’t like that you receive compliments; it’s just that she prefers giving them to you.
“I’m so happy to see you all here tonight,” Carmen said, clapping her hands loudly. “There’s nothing more exciting than tonight’s event. Did you know,” she cooed as she ‘boop’ed your nose, “that I’ve got people betting about two million dollars that you’ll win? I am so, so pleased that you’ve chosen to make your debut in my arena.”
You nod, your neck stiff. “I guess I’m excited?” you mumbled.
Carmen snapped her fingers. She signaled to one of her lackies to come forward. A box Is presented at your feet.
“I hope you don’t mind, but I brought you a little something. A uniform of your own, courtesy of moi. Don’t you love it? I had your photos analyzed by a fashion expert, and they designed your shorts to compliment you perfectly.”
The high waisted, Thai shorts are a deep ivory shade, with black flowers sewn into the design. They’re the most beautiful Thai shorts you’d ever seen! Your own were cute, but simple, considering that you didn’t usually think to be a fashionista while working out.
“They’re amazing,” you admitted. Over the top? Definitely. Did you expect anything else? Honestly, you’re not sure. You weren’t sure what to expect.
“Oh! I almost forgot.” Carmen, as she smiled, reached into the deep pocket of her red silk kimono-blouse. In her hands is a thickly wound prajoud, made of fine threads and paracord. The black and red jumped out at you like an old friend.
“I hope I got the rank right?”
“You did,” you say as you took the prajad from Carmen. “I could have brought my own if you’d asked.”
“It’s really not a big deal, my darling,” Carmen purred. She ran her hand through your hair, taking note of the silky feeling of each strand. “I will be watching. There will be people outside the door waiting to escort you to the arena when you’re done dressing.”
Her fingers are heavy with her bejeweled rings. The heavy tear shaped gems get tangled in your hair.
“You have ten minutes,” Carmen adds.
Helena glowered after her as she flitted out of the room. Her heels clacked down the hallway following the click of the door shutting in place.
Montoya took a long drag of her cigarette before she  chortled.“You just gonna let her mark her territory like that?”
Helena didn’t say anything.
“Oi, Katniss,” Harley said loudly.
Helena’s cloudy eyes finally look to her friend. “What?”
“Carmen Rossini basically stole Y/n from you, and you let her!”
As you pulled out of your jeans, you sent Harley a little glare. “No one owned me to begin with,” you snapped.
“Hey, I’m all for women’s rights,” Harley exclaimed. “But it just seemed like—,”
“I know what it seemed like,” you snapped. “That’s the entire goddamn point, isn’t it? Get in her good graces?”
Case choked back her soda. “If that’s your idea of getting in Carmen’s creepy ‘good graces’ you gotta do better than that. You didn’t act sexy or flirt back at all!”
Helena stood to her feet. She brushed down the front of her black zip-up sweater. “I’m waiting outside,” she declares before stomping out with a frown wrung on her mouth.
Harley grimaced as the door slammed shut.
“Kid, come on,” Montoya sighed.
“I’m right,” Cass scowled. “You know that I am. We knew from the start that in order to get the little girl back, sexual favors would probably have to be granted.”
You pulled up your shorts. “Can everyone shut up?” You asked.
“What’s that?” Cass proceeded to ask, given she couldn’t talk about Carmen anymore. She pointed at the arm band that lay over the counter.
“Prajoud,” you tell her. Thank you pulled out of tour shirt. The heavy duty sports bra was already in place, but it gave you major uniboob.
“What does it do?” Cass asked again. Unable to contain her curiosity, she grabbed it off the vanity and fiddled with it.
“It’s like a belt,” you explained. “Instead of wearing a black belt, I wear a black prajad.”
“Who come up with that?” Cass asked.
“Uhm, Thai people?” Harley said as though it should be obvious. She snorted and jerked her thumb towards Cass. “Get a load of this guy.”
You rolled your eyes. “It’s alright to ask questions, guys, just try not to be annoying. ‘M a little stressed out already.”
Harley took a final gulp of her soda. “Well, I guess we know who’s not getting action tonight. And that’s Y/n!”
“Why is Helena so upset anyways? Because Carmen was flirting?”
“No,” Harley explained. “See, she’s angry because Y/n’s going out and doing this fight, one, without asking her to begin with, two, for some other little kid, and three, with a evil Italian mafia tigress. She’s projecting her childhood fear that she’ll never be able to protect anyone she loves. She’s also rash, irritable, and possessive, so it’s just a cherry on top that the plan includes Y/n using her charms to sway Carmen.”
“Bravo,” you plainly say. “It’s almost like you’re a doctor or something.”
“Yeah,” Harley grinned. “Or something.”
You pulled the prajad over your forearm. You pulled the band tight, holding the laces in your mouth so you could knot it tight with one hand. You looked in the mirror, unsure of what to think of yourself.
You kicked your boots off next.
In socks, you turned to look at Harley and Cass. “Let’s do this,” you sighed.
Helena had been waiting loyally outside, leaned up against the jamb. Her eyes flitted up and down your figure, before rolling up towards the ceiling. “Let’s do this,” you said, sounding as if you’d already lost.
Marching down the hall in tow of the honey blond Italian, you tried to make eye contact with Helena. She was good at ignoring you. You’re not sure if it’s because she’s angry, stressed, or both.
Riddled with anxiety, you wish that she would look at you, or hold your hand at the very least.
At the entrance of the arena, you could see it was filled massively to the brim of its walls. You hadn’t realized how far underground you really are until you looked at the expansive seating. The rink’s seats filled massively, stretching to every wall that bounced the cheering back and forth.
You stepped to the stairs that wound up to the cage. You could smell the sweat and the matts; above the sound of the crowd cheering, you could hear your blood rushing fast in your ears.
“Find Ayala,” you muttered in Harley’s ears. “I don’t want to be here longer than we have to be.”
Her blue eyes sparkled with mischief, but they were momentairly dulled by a silent question. “I thought...?”
“No,” you said firmly. “We shouldn’t be here any longer than we have to be,” you tell her. “I’ll stay here, I’ll do my thing; you take everyone and look for that girl. If you’re not done by the time the match is over, I’ll distract Carmen.”
Harley couldn’t respond by the time you were dragged up the stairs. Outside the cage’s gate, you were given a little table at which you could rest at. It had a pitcher of ice water, some glasses, a washcloth, and a bottle of brandy. You took a large drink of the brandy first. You peeled off your socks.
It felt like a blur as you stepped into the cage.
Your opponent was your size; she looked your weight, too. You suppose that’s fair, at least. It’s not like in the movies. The real competitions are done by weight and height.
You turned your head to give one last glance to your friends.
Helena stood beyond the cage, her hand resting over the gun holster. Her eyes were fixated on you.
You had to look away.
Tying your hair up in a tight bun, you walked out onto the mat. Your opponent did the same; meeting you half way, you two shook hands.
You didn’t exchange names; that would only make it harder.
“The rules,” a voice boomed around the stadium, “are there are no weapons to be permitted in the arena. Please watch as the fighters return to their corners then begin the match on the sound of the bell. The match will consist of two rounds, each lasting seven minutes.”
You hovered in the corner of the cage. You stretched and jogged in place. You have enough training for this. You do. You know that you can do it; hopefully, you will.
The bell rang. You take a massive sprint out into the middle of the ring where your opponent had already paced out.
You wound up a punch. Your feet lifted off the mat as you leap into the air, and you delivered the blow to the side of her face.
Her teeth crunched under the impact. It was such a hit that you saw it spew out of her mouth, and hit the cage.
The crowd exploded into a frenzy.
Hovering at your face your hands remained in constant motion. Her kicks were well calculated and her movements tactical. She gave away all of her tricks, though, by looking twice at the target she would next go for. If she looked at your side once too many times, you would crouch and use your arms to block your ribcage.
The sweat that built up made the more precise attacks difficult. Your punch began sliding off her face, keeping you staggering forward, and in her wide open range.
You were struck once, twice, then thrice on your left cheek. It sent blood and saliva dribbling down your chin.
Your prajad began to slip as you struggled to regain your balance.
The girl’s long leg extended forward. Her foot jabbed a strong thip into the center of your stomach, practically digging against your bladder.
The bell rang, then, marking the end of the first round.
You fell into your corner with a wheezing gasp. You crawled for the little table. You drank directly from the pitcher.
You looked back to the crowd, half expecting to see a flash of unfamiliar faces.
Helena still remained at the ringside. Her hands are clenched through the cage, and her eyes are desperate to meet yours. You were confused. Why hadn’t she left with Harley? Did Harley not need her? Or did she want to stay and watch?
You felt stronger with her just a few yards away.
You staggered to your legs, where your knees wobbled like jello on a plate.
The two minutes of rest time had ended, and the bell rang once more. You slid back rather than go for her first.
She sauntered to you like a bear, her shoulders hunched and her fists close to her face. She swung hooks and uppercuts that you could just barely dodge. You were close to slipping backwards a few times.
“Y/n, watch out!” Helena shouted suddenly.
You couldn’t see the girl racing towards you like a battering ram through your blurry vision. Her fist slammed over your temple. You swore you could feel your brain tumbling around your skull as you fell to the floor.
You clutched your ear with your bare hands. Pain gushed out of you like water. You thought you could see it, visibly, as it poured down bright green and crystalline.
It wasn’t there; it was the spots dancing in front of you. Disorientation is a real bitch.
One tactical standup later, you’re back up on your feet. You pushed yourself forward, forcing the remaining energy you had out of your hands. You grabbed the girl by her long pony tail and dragged her into a tight clinch. She attempted to swim out of it; the friction of her wrists against your neck burned.
You tugged her down, driving a sharp knee into her stomach. She stayed in your clinch for a long time, gasping for air as she couldn’t evade the knees. You finally released her. She staggers back. She falls onto her ass, visibly shaken up and at a loss for breath.
The crowd began to scream at you. Some did a countdown, others urged the other girl to get back up.
It was too late for her.
The bell rang, marking the end of the seven minutes, as well as the second round. She had lost, and you had won.
You limped towards her. Despite your own pain, you lifted the girl onto her feet.
“Good game?” she rasped.
“Hell yeah,” you wheezed.
It felt like the ultimate orgasm to go back and gulp down the water. The cold, damp washcloth made a good compress for your busted lip. You judged by the twitching of your left eyelid that you had a pretty sizable welt there.
Helena ran to meet you as you limped down the stairs out of the cage. She threw her arms around you tightly. “You’re alright,” she gasped.
You tried to hug her back. Your arm hung loosely over her lower back as you tried to laugh. “Did you doubt that I would be?” you asked her. “Where’s Harley and Cass? Montoya?”
“They went to find the girl,” Helena said in your ear. “I couldn’t leave you...I had to stay and watch. I had to make sure.”
She pressed a kiss into the crook of your neck. “Let’s go,” you said firmly, “before Carmen comes for us.”
Helena helped you leave the arena. By the time you vanished, the stadium was already announcing it’s second match, featuring a woman named Selina. The people went into a hectic frenzy of excitement when Selina’s name was announced over the speakers. You knew as you were walking out she would never be able to escape this place.
Honey-blond-haired Italian guy jogged to keep up with you. “Miss Carmen asks that you wait in the dressing room,” he called out. “Yeah, yeah,” Helena called out. “We’ll be there.”
He followed you down the hallway, keeping several paces back to maintain a steady watching distance. He paused as he watched you and Helena head straight into the dressing room.
Sitting on the sofa inside is Harley, Cass, and a little girl sleeping in Harley’s arms. You were shocked. For a four year old girl, Ayala was incredibly small and fragile looking. Her olive skin and auburn hair is just like her elder sister’s. The hollows beneath her eyes are dark and colored by her greenish veins.
“Let’s scadadle,” Harley hissed as she rose to her feet, though struggling to keep Ayala in her arms.
You all rushed out of the hallway, quickly as to make it before Carmen could come back from the arena.
“Where’s the exit?” Cass asked.
“It’s this way,” Helena says. She pointed straight down the hallway. “The car’s waiting for us above the trap door.”
“Yeah, unless someone stole it,” Cass mocked. “What if we get locked in? Like in Hotel California?”
You could hardly begin to understand what Cass was saying. Her words were jumbles of sounds and her figure a blur of her dark hair and red jacket.
“We’re not getting locked in,” Harley exclaimed. “Let’s just get outta here!”
Helena climbed up the ladder first. She punched the door up, then open. “Give me the kid,” she said quietly.
Harley struggled to lift Ayala up.
Helena scooped her easily into her strong arms. Ayala stirred awake and whined as she became more and more aware. “I want to go home,” she mumbled, her voice quiet and empty.
“We’re taking you home, pumpkin,” Helena assured the little girl. “I’ve got you.”
As Cass was going up the ladder, a loud clatter arose down the tunnel. “Uh oh, spaghetti-os,” Harley whistled. She pushed you up the ladder next. “I’ll meet you guys up there,” she promised, sounding entirely confident. “Montoya,” she whistled between her teeth. “Feel like doing some target practice?”
It was the first time all day that Montoya smiled.
As you climbed up, you heard Harley’s shrill laugh between the shots of two, little handguns.
“Into the car,” you wheezed to Cassie. She looped her arms around your waist to help you limp into your seat. “Buckled in?” you heard Helena ask the little girl. She looked so shy despite all that’s going on. The curls of her hair were brushed behind her ear as Helena held her tightly. “You’re going back to your parents.”
Harley came running out seconds later. “Let’s get this show on the road,” she exclaimed.
“You have the keys!” Cassie shouted back.
Harley jumped into the drivers seat. She honked the horn loudly. “Renee, let’s move it!”
Montoya was limping a few feet away, struggling to keep up Harley’s pace. She crawled inside and as soon as she did, Harley pressed the gas, and sped away.
“Smoking is so bad for you, you know that, right?” Harley chastised. “Maybe if you just used the nicotine patches I bought you for Christmas, then you wouldn’t have so much trouble keeping up with us.”
“Take the patches,” Montoya huffed, “and shove them up your ass.”
You couldn’t help but laugh. You leaned back into the headrest of the rear seats. Helena held Ayala beside you, stroking her hair gently as she held her cellphone to Ayala’s ear. Her parents were on the other end, and you could hear the cries of relief.
You met Helena’s gaze, and you managed a smile on your busted mouth.
“I love you,” you mouth to her.
“I love you, too,” she replied.

Muay Thai 1.01
[Read Ahead] [Mirror]
Silence hung in the air, heavy for its awkwardness. Did she need to say something? She probably did.
“Uh, thank you for coming,” she said, eventually.
The two women nodded back at her as they collected their water bottles. One of them waved, and Nairi waved back, shifting her weight from one foot to the other as she watched them leave. After a moment she realised that that was probably creepy, and averted her eyes, walking over to her front desk as though she’d left something there that she needed to consult.
The little bell over the door made a pleasant noise as it swung open and shut again, and Nairi looked up, watching her first and only beginner judo students walk down the street.
She watched them until they moved past the frame of the front window, then glanced down at what was actually on her desk. The two forms for her new judo students on top of her notebook, clunky clamshell laptop in the compartment under the topmost surface of the desk, and a stack of mail next to the forms.
The large digital clock on the wall next to her head said she had fifteen minutes until her Krav Maga class was due to start. Nairi doubted the bell would be ringing for any interested students though; the judo women were the only biters in the two weeks she’d been open.
The top two envelopes were junk mail addressed simply to ‘the owner’, and Nairi dropped them in the wastepaper basket without a second thought. Movement caught her eye and she resisted the reflex to look up—it was only her reflection.
Mirrors were a necessary part of any dojo; you had to be able to see what you were doing to know you were doing it right. The long walls of them in the rooms had been why she’d bought the old dance studio in the first place. All of the places she’d trained and learned and taught in had been filled with activity and other people though, you got used to the movement when it was always happening. She just didn’t like to be alone with herself.
The building was old, janky by the standards of the gentrification that was slowly creeping up the street, and the first floor was made up of two large rooms that were ideal for her purposes. The front faced onto the street with the glass walls and doors, and the second was only a little smaller and behind a door, which would be useful if she ever had students in want a private sparring space. The only adjustments she’d really had to make downstairs was ripping out the barres and replacing the flooring.
The back room also had the interior staircase leading up to the second floor. Nairi had added a door with a lock at each end of that, considering that was where she was living. The renovations upstairs had been more intensive; stripping out the mirrors, adding a couple of walls, installing everything needed for a functional kitchen and a bathroom that consisted of more than a sink and toilet that looked like they’d been sized for pixies. The end result had been a large living space and two smaller rooms either side of the newly expanded bathroom.
Floor number three, the last, had been identical in layout to the second, but Nairi didn’t have a use for it and wasn’t entirely certain what to do with it. She’d installed another door on the stairs leading up to it and left it locked, tucking the key away in her pantry. The ‘front’ entrance was next to the pantry in the kitchen and lead out onto a rickety little structure that could generously be called a balconette with a bare set of aluminium stairs leading down into the side alley that bordered the building and where she parked her car. It was probably meant to be the fire escape.
Nairi wasn’t entirely certain what was supposed to go in a ‘real home’, one you weren’t planning to leave, and the magazines her kitchen contractor had given her didn’t look very lived in. After about a week of staring at the blank walls and counters she’d gone out and bought a fern for the kitchen and moved her punching bag up to sit in the corner of the living room.
The fern was already dead. The only other arguably decorative item she had in the apartment was her calendar with her dutifully circled dates for each quarterly reminder to change her locks.
The last envelope was larger, heavy card stock with a ‘DO NOT BEND’ sticker under the stamps. She’d been waiting for this one and bent to open the first drawer, pulling out the shrink-wrapped frame she’d bought in anticipation of its arrival. She tore away the plastic wrap and popped out the backing carefully, wiping down the glass with the bottom of her shirt before setting the frame face down on the desk and picking up the envelope.
She tore away the envelope tab and tilted it towards her hand, gently shaking the certificate out into her hand. A brief inspection showed nothing folded up or out of place, and she gently pressed it into the frame, setting the back into its slot and folding the tabs down.
That done she checked the door again, making sure no hopeful students were about to open it up and walk in before she ducked into the back room. The bell didn’t ring in the time it took for her to cross the room and open up the cupboards where she kept the floor mats, pads, and the stepladder.
She took the stepladder across to the front desk, unfolding it and setting it against the wall. She should figure out the sound system, probably, she thought idly as she picked up the frame and stepped up to hang it on the wall next to its twins. It was too quiet.
The first two certificates declared that Nairi Smith was qualified to teach the martial arts of Krav Maga and Judo to a brown belt level, signed by teachers at a school from across town. The third and newest was from a gym a little closer and decreed that she was able to teach Muay Thai as a black and gold level instructor. Both schools had cheerfully agreed to grade any students she sent their way if it came up.
Most of the people she’d met while actually learning Muay Thai didn’t really see the point in using colour grading to advertise how ‘good’ you were, but the way she was teaching demanded a certain… Aesthetic. People liked having markers to determine their progress, and she’d started in Judo, so she understood the impulse.
When she glanced back at the clock as she stepped off the ladder, there was still eleven minutes until her Krav class was due to start. And no hopeful students. The temptation to just call it, to flip the ‘closed’ sign on her door and go upstairs so she could order take out and stair at the ceiling was overwhelmingly strong. She pulled her eyes away from the door that would take her upstairs and set about to try and do busy work.
Putting the stepladder back and restacking the mats she’d knocked over while moving it killed another four minutes. Examining the frames next to the desk and making sure they were hanging evenly ate thirty seconds. Booting up the laptop and checking her emails took a minute in loading, and another minute in refreshing. She resisted the urge to start pacing up and down the dojo.
A shadow walked past the front window and Nairi glanced up with forced casualness. It was a pedestrian, pausing outside her door to check road traffic before jaywalking over to the 24-hour Japanese restaurant opposite. It was a good little place; she’d certainly eaten enough of their tempura at three AM to judge.
Three minutes.
Nairi pushed her fringe away from her face again and frowned, tugging her hair tie out of her ponytail. Her hair was the longest she could remember it ever being, hanging in a straight, black curtain down about her jawline. With an inch-long tideline of bleach around the bottom. She crossed the room to stand in front of the tall mirrors and forced herself to look in it so she could tie her hair back again. Her fingers moved brusquely, and she did her best to ignore the way the motions translated into tugging tension across her scalp. Dark eyes blinked in the mirror in front of her as she worked, not really processing her own reflection. One minute left.
The cuff of her long-sleeved shirt had shifted up past her wrist revealing tattooed skin. She tugged it back down to cover the ink without looking at it and headed back to her the desk. The clocked ticked over to seven o’clock as she walked, bringing a cheerful ‘ping!’ of a noise and no students for Krav Maga.
She should really wait for a few minutes, just in case. People were late all the time.
Nairi flipped the sign on the door to ‘CLOSED’ and switched off the lights, cloaking the room in sunset and shadow. She fetched the laptop from the desk, tucking it under her arm with the power cable, before crouching and retrieving her keys from the bottom drawer, which was secured with a combination lock.
Instead of crossing through the back room she went outside from the front and locked it externally before going around the corner and up the outside stairs to get into her apartment. The less she was in the habit of using her interior staircase, the less likely it was that anyone would notice that you could access her home like that.
Realistically she could probably get away with changing the locks on that staircase every six months instead of every three; the exterior locks presented an existing challenge. Though, if someone was going to be familiar enough with her habits to use the interior access then they’d probably bypass the entry locks by virtue of being a benign part of her routine—like a student, or a delivery person.
Better to keep them on the same change rotation, then. She could always consider off-setting the months if she wanted the extra security.
Nairi paused in the doorway to the kitchen, taking a moment to consider the light levels before flipping the ceiling lamps on and locking her door behind her. All of her doors were fully open where she’d left them, and her doorstop was still on its mark. She set the laptop on the kitchen counter and picked up the stack of takeaway menus from next to her microwave, padding towards the couch as she started to leaf through them.
This area was heavy on the East-Asian food which was nice. It was easy to get sick of pizza, and they usually fucked up and put meat on it anyway. Once she got tired of rice she could just swap to noodles and vice versa. The Indian place a couple of blocks away looked good for tonight—they did a good paneer.
The young woman on the end of the phone sounded extremely bored. “Saag paneer with saffron rice, a garlic naan, and two bhaji,” she rattled off with practised ease. “Can I get a name for the order?”
Nairi hesitated, giving herself a moment to stare at her ceiling and take a deep breath. There was no reason to lie to a teenager working takeaway. “Nairi.”
If the teenager noticed the pause, she didn’t comment. “Great. That’ll be sixteen dollars and ready for pick up in fifteen minutes.”
“Thanks,” said Nairi hanging up the phone and bringing her total social interactions of the day to three whole people. Four, if you counted the fact that she’d have to go to the restaurant and pay when she picked up her dinner.
Class was completed and food was cooked. The apartment was eery and silent, and Nairi sat there for about a minute before she caved and turned the TV on just to have some background noise. A news segment was playing; grim-faced anchors discussing a brutal murder with a uniformed police commissioner.
Nairi blinked, stock still where she was sitting on the couch with the remote pointed at the TV, the thoughts in her mind distant and hard to reach. The camera cut to show yellow tape and her fingers moved without any direction from her brain, pushing the channel one over. Canned laughter played over a crowded kitchen set, immediately sliding into white noise in Nairi’s periphery, and she un-tensed, setting the remote down again.
She picked up the laminated sheet next to it, looking over the grid labelled with the days of the week across the top. Down the side were hour long blocks starting from one in the afternoon, and the squares were blocked off with labels for Judo and Krav Maga with different colours for the difficulty levels. Nairi picked up her marker and cleaner and got to work fitting Muay Thai into the schedule, ignoring the sitcom happening in front of her.
Later, lying on her back with the light from a talk show playing across her face and the empty take out containers on the coffee table in front of her, Nairi tilted her head a little to watch the clock on her microwave. It ticked over to twelve-oh-one, June 26th, and she sighed, wishing herself a quiet happy birthday.

The closer we get the more my anxiety plays up...
What if I can't keep up with my journal that I worked so hard on?
What if I mess up something I can't change on my island? (I don't WANT to have to reset, but if it's the first day i will... i don't want to have to reset two or three days in because i change my mind about something...)
And the bigger ones.... I've been so tired I can barely stay awake two or three hours at a time. I can't do a whole lot of recreational things because I'm asleep. Right now I'm attributing it to depression, but I am going to ask my oncologist if maybe the meds could cause it (the meds I DID stop, but thay messed with my hormones anyway) or if the slight bit of anemia I have could cause it maybe? What if I am not awake enough to fully enjoy the game?
I go to the oral surgeon I think for a consultation to get some teeth pulled, what if he wants to do it anytime soon after the game is out? Will it mess with my enjoybility to have that kind of procedure? (Last time I had teeth out... my wisdom teeth I did very poorly, I got two dry sockets and was in some of the worst pain... I was LUCKY to be able to sleep as much as I did, because the pain was awful. And I followed instructions, so I don't know if I am more prone to those kinds of things or if it was the fact he didn't tell me to stop my birth control or what... but it was bad. And now I have a much higher tolerance to pain meds and will have to use the ones I'm ON so they'll be less effective probably. I'll die if I get a dry socket. Pain tolerance, mine is high until you get to my mouth and then I'm an absolute crybaby.) So say he wants to do it the Monday after... will I be out of commission to play for two weeks or more while I recover? I know this sounds more important, but to me the game is important, too. I want to be able to put in at least some work daily for quite a while so I can create a beautiful island at the same time others who start on the 20th are. So it may not seem like a huge deal, but it is to me okay? Enough of a huge deal for my anxiety to use it against me.
Those are just examples though. I have an anxiety disorder which in past years has become more generalized and entwined with my bipolar symptoms. So I am in no short supply of things related to the 20th to be anxious about.
I wish I could just be happy. And I mean, I am. We have less than a week and I'll be playing a game that is 7 years in the making for those of us that play Animal Crossing. I've been waiting with baited breath probably more than a year, to the point where when Pokemon Sw/Shld came out it was just a distraction instead of the main event, at that point I was already craving New Horizons desperately. And here we are nearly at the end of our waiting, I am happy, don't get me wrong.
But my mind never just let's me be happy.
What if I am too late to make friends in the first few days like I've planned? Everyone else seems to already have their friendships, but I knew I couldn't keep up with a friendship that long. So here is the week to make friends, and I don't feel I know how, or I feel like most people already have their friends. I have maybe two people besides my sister to play with. And I'm excited for that. But I'd love to be included in a larger group of friends or something, you know, that sort of thing is nice. If I only have a few close friends though, that'd be nice too. And i think the first few days it seems people might just be playing on their own, i don't always NEED someone to play with, I'll probably prefer to play alone, or maybe with my sister mostly, or just my close friend when I play. But it's just i guess i expected to use this opportunity to make more friends and now i feel i am wasting it. I don't often have such an "easy way" to make friends because I am disinterested in most things and just don't have a lot to talk about. This common interest is an amazing thing to talk about and should make things easier, but it doesn't as much as I hoped I guess.
What if I don't finish my journal? I worked so hard on it, but i need my dad's help with the label maker and need to finalize the decisions about what I'm going to record in it before I do make the labels. It can still be changed later because I am using labels on plastic tabs and a discbound journal but what if I don't have time once i'm playing?
Ugh. Just all the "what ifs". And I know some people will think "why'd she bother making this post?" Well random person, it does help to get them out in the open. Since most everything I have been thinking has been AC related lately, this has turned into a bit of a personal blog. Sorry for that. I do plan to make it a New Horizons blog and post as much original content as I can once ACNH is out.
Oh another one. What if posting original content is too hard?
Like, I want this blog to have original content and all that, but if you have to remove your memory card and get on a computer to do it, that's a lot of trouble and extra energy I don't have these days. And you had to do that for New Leaf and everyone did including myself, but I had more energy and it seemed easier. And it seems like it was less effort those days because people DID THINGS on the computer including myself. Now I use my phone and ipad as computers, you can do almost all the same things on them, and my laptop sits idle which might be the reason it doesn't run as well these days. Or it may just be that it's old as crap for a laptop. I mean, I guess it's moderately old for what it is, it's a very nice laptop, but I think it's the same one I had for New Leaf so it's been with me a while. Anyway, it SEEMED like less trouble because you were on the computer doing stuff anyway, so just pop your memory card in there and go while you're checking your stuff. It's not that easy on a phone, BUT I am hoping you can post photos and screenshots to SOMETHING through the Nooklink app. We don't know everything about the app yet as it isnt out yet, and I doubt you can post straight to tumblr (though that'd make things easy, huh?) because this is not the most used platform anymore, but if I can post them to anywhere (like facebook or twitter... I'd probably post them privately to facebook because I am less versed in twitter stuff, but then I did recently become an AC twitter on my personal twitter because I never used my personal twitter anyway, so... yeah...) I can grab them on my phone once they are uploaded and reupload them here. But I also plan to make my "diary like" text posts here. I am not recording a diary in my journal having to do with NH, I only want like... data and information I can use, etc. But that doesn't mean I won't want to write diary like entries, and I am less likely to lose my blog that a physical journal anyway it feels. (I say less likely... I lost my New Leaf blog for a few years there, but with effort I did recently find it.) So it could be very easy to post original content here, or if the app doesn't do things it really totally should, then it might be a bit more effort and I don't know if I have that to give right now, so I'm nervous about that. Everything I post here about my game experience is going to be more for me to look back on than anything, so I WANT to be able to post about that stuff here. But I guess we'll have to wait to see, along with waiting for the game.
And everyone knows how well waiting and anxiety get along. They are two peas in a pod, they play off each other like it's no one's business.
But I hope everything in the end will just be okay. I am "lucky" in a way. Since I'm chronically ill, disabled, and have cancer, I don't have work or school to worry about and while being sick is a big bummer, that does take a lot of stress off of me. I don't know how I would handle a job or school even just mentally these days, I don't see how it could go well and I guess that is because I am so sick, even just mentally... but I know a lot of disabled people DO still do those things anyway, sometimes because they HAVE to, so I am glad I am in a position at my age where I am still largely take care of. My disability money doesn't cover a fraction of my necessities, so I feel blessed everyday for my parents, even though my mom and I fight like cats and dogs. Annnndddd now I am getting to be anxious about what happens to me when my parents are gone and that's a WHOLE different type of anxiety... yikes... I need to stop letting my anxiety run rampant now I guess, it's gone too far.
But I am very "lucky" to be in a position where once the game comes out it can be my main focus for a while. Partially because i don't have the energy to focus on many different things, so it's good Animal Crossing can take up that main spot in my life for now.
Come on now, back to AC anxieties. Ya stupid general anxiety...
And I guess I am anxious about the typical things people are anxious about... what fruit will I get, will I like my first Islanders, etc. but to me those things arent as major. All the fruits are so pretty I could really get on with any of them I think, and hopefully my first villagers will be great, but I'll make myself a net if they're not, and I do have amiibo cards for moving in some of my favorite villagers later on, so I can deal with a dud or two.
I'm a little anxious about map layouts too, just picking the right one seems a little difficult to me since there are some things you cannot change. But I think I can make a good choice, I'm more worried if I'll be able to draw it in for my journal or not. I should draw the general layout for the map, but I don't even know if I can do that right.
Oh I also have a package to finish working on and get in the mail before Friday, BUT I finished the hardest parts (writing a bunch of postcards, basically a latter's worth of text but on postcards) last night, so I just have to do finishing touches and get it out. I maybe want to type another letter to send out, too, but if I don't get it done I'll try not to beat myself up. I got really burnt out on mail stuff lately and as much as I still get, which is about one or two things in the mail daily, I can't reply to all the things I should. I'm stressed about it, but I won't let that ruin my New Horizons time. Especially since mail was supposed to be a fun hobby for me and just... stopped. But that's a whole different thing, that has less to do with New Horizons than the other stuff.
Now I genuinely do feel less stressed since I rambled on for a while. Thanks for reading this, if you read any of it. I don't expect anyone to read all this anxiety inducing, depressing junk.
But anyway, now I am going to try and think about the Nooklink app and what kind of features I think it should have. Like I said, it really should have a way to post screenshots/pictures to social media, and I bet it's got something like that since we have the camera in game. I bet we maybe even can post pictures to social media from the switch. I mean, well, I know we can technically, but I mean I bet we can without having to leave the game. Because you can do that in New Leaf now. Gosh would that have been handy YEARS ago. I guess it came with the "welcome amiibo" update?
But at least we know we can scan in QR codes. I dunno if you've noticed but I have been collecting some and tagging them (you can find them under the "QR" tag on my blog, or by type of QR code, likes dresses I just tagged "dress") so I have them once we are able to use them in game. I am going to check my @playtimewithmadi blog to see if I have QR codes saved that I used in New Leaf, too, so I can reblog any good ones here. All of that gives me something to do, I suppose.
I could also work on my journal, or my mail. Both need to get done before Friday and need work.
But honestly, I am probably gonna play Happy Home Designer right now. I'll design at least one house, and then maybe I'll work on my mail and journal stuff. We'll see.
Anyway, thanks again for sticking with me, I love everyone who stays subbed to this blog even though the BS posts like this. Sorry for rambling on, but I needed this, so thank you for letting me have it.
Off to more distraction then...

The Ultimate Guide to Design a Website That Is Credible
Design a website that is credible
When creating a website, especially a website for selling products online, the most important thing is to design a reliable website that looks credible and ultimately successful based on the principles of website design. Must contain these things
Modernity
A good website that is attractive and able to attract customers to buy products on the web is modern, so website design should always be modern. And constantly changing page layouts or product updates, news and information. To keep the site up-to-date, it looks like an abandoned site.
2. Art
Art will also help attract the attention of the audience. Therefore, whether using color or game style, you should create a website which is the best software house in kuala lumpur that is an artwork that can convey the emotions to the audience and clearly show the uniqueness of the products and services, but the colors used in the design should be integrated without Too confusing, the key is to find the target audience clearly.
3. Have clear seller information.
How reliable is the website? What is the truth based on complete seller information? With all the main information, all necessary things are the company name, address, phone number, map, store, fax (if available) and other contact methods that can be contacted quickly and easily. And there is clear evidence that can create more credibility and confidence for customers
4. Don't worry too much about sales.
Website pages with too many ads or pop-ups can be boring and annoying to viewers, especially when those ads are displayed in content areas of interest to customers. In addition, forms that include contacting stores should not be designed to appear on the homepage, because if customers are interested, they will go to the contact page and fill out the form themselves. Therefore, it is best to use hard sales appropriately.
5. Reference service period
A website that is open for a long time will create greater credibility for viewers, because most customers will be convinced that a website or store that sells products for a long time will not cheat on the website. The reference period for opening the service should be real, not just one month. But claiming to be ten years
6. Outstanding figures, easy to read
The characters used must be distinctive and easy to read. By choosing the right font size, reduce the size to use a clearly visible font color. Choose the most standard font that looks weird but difficult to read. For the average person, it should never be used.
7. Constantly update or present information
Websites without any updates are often considered obsolete and cause customers to wonder if the store is still selling products. Will I receive the product when I order it? In the end, I decided not to buy, so the information should be updated at any time to perform various actions or upload new products. Adding articles to the website will make the website look more vivid and reliable.
8. Spelling the letters correctly.
Although today is considered an era of Thai language disruption, most people start using online social media that uses the language widely. But creating a website should focus on spelling as accurately as possible. Must be beautiful, readable, well-spaced, and well-organized, especially if you use English, you must write it correctly according to the grammar, and the grammar will help build the confidence of customers who view the information on the site
9. Clear goals
Most people tend to read the information on the website silently. And I don't like to read too long information, so in terms of content, ordering process, payment, waiting for various products, it should be written in a concise and clear way. For example, if you are interested in the website, please click here (place a link on the order page for The customer clicks to the page for all purposes), if there is a promotion, please tell them not to indirectly tell the customer what the media seller wants for a clear purpose, if they want to buy, want to promote, what is obvious, It will impress customers and hope to buy more from stores.
10. Mention of using services
Referrals to people who have used the service can also help build customer confidence, which may include references and titles to customer reviews on the web. Or let customers independently check the store ’s product experience, and if they talk about starred users, they will attract more customers.
11. Rewards received by representatives
If the store has won awards before, whether it's the "Outstanding Store Award" or any award that shows credibility on the web, those awards tell the store's identity and make it reliable. More. Also, if there is good news about their business, suggestions are also displayed on the website
There are many ways to build trust in a website. All of these are just a few of the things that interest customers and visitors in placing an order on the site, what is important is the contact details and seller details. Because it can show the identity of the store owner, website designers must pay attention to many components, especially the structure of the website. In order to make the website reliable and attract the attention of the viewer, for those who want to create a website, the design should be given priority, especially the design that matches the interests of the main target group.

HI if i might bother u for a hot second i wanted to ask u. if merhaps u had used a guide somewhere out there to do ur lil tbh mod and if yes if u could share it. bc like i got basemod and i understand the various .txt/.xml files needed but i havent been able to find anything describing the various functions u gotta write for ur .dll c:
oh my god! unfortunately there ia not really any one good guide ☺️ but i toiled and trudged through the corners of the interwebs and i do offer you my finest advice on how to Get Shit Done:
(under the linebreak because i wrote Entierly too much and no one who does not want to see should be subjected to seeing this.)
if youre not already in the project moon discord servee linked onnthe sub reddit, go and join it, thwres a channel called #lobotomy-mods that you can either ask for help in, or try to scrape using the search tool to try to find anything remotely helpful.
in the pins is also a tutotial on how to MAKE the DLL file if you dont already know what to do (good for people who came into it with zero previous experience, like me <- literally learned c# to mod lobotomy corp and Ruina) but it dosent really go further than making a namespace for the mod.
There is a somewhat guide on making a custom abnormality on pjm-famous modding forum site DCinside, but unfortunately it's in korean. gtranslate does a fine enough job of getting the basics across though, so I'd still reccomend it. link <- this should be the guide. (if youre like me and confused as to where the images are, click the things thay look like URLs and it opens an image in a pop up window, idk what would happen on mobile but you should be modding on your computer anyways.)
other than that, its most simple to look through the code of base game and/or other modded abnos to get an idea of what and how they are doing things, and then to reverse engeneer that for your own mod. especially other peoples mods, it gives a goog guideline of things like the file hierarchy you need and the basics of the layouts and stuff... forexample i used a silentgirl abno mod on nexusmod for groundwork of TBH's hierarchy. amen.
it is a lot of work thoguh and because basemod was built for and by a kr audience it can get hard to debug stuff well especially if youre like me and screw up the EGO stuff. and coding in general is very finnicky. forget one semicolon and you explode (not that visual studio wont try to point at it and yell at you before you export it.) asking for help in the discord can yield mixed results but theres some really knowledgeable folks in there so i think if youre really stuck or confused on what something is its always a fine enough thing to atleast try.
if all you would like, dearest anon, is sir tbh as a mod, (which i kind of assumed from the phrasing of your post but i wanted to infodump anyways 🥹[correction i reread your post and Hmm maybe i misread it the first time . either way im offering both sides of the information #win]) then im working on improving our beloved creature to be a more suitable abnormality starting like. tomorrow. its 2:40 am and i should be asleep, but insomnia calls. so does lobcorp modding because it's way more interesting than lying still with my eyeballs closed for several hours.
as of right now, tbh has like 80% work sucess rate on everything, it has no story entries nor special managerial procedures, and the weapon and armor and gift are all just reskins from the silentgirl mod i was using as a base (because thus far i was focusing on getting the damn thing to show up properly in its cell rather than the little details.) but soon enough i Will finalize tbh and offer it to the public, I'll hopefully give it some cool bells and whistles, and then I'll let it run free across the pastures of the internet. so Stay Tuned. you're anon so unfortunately i will have no direct means to let You specifically know when it is completed, but I'll probably upload it to Nexus once i deem it to be functional enough. so you can just sniff around on there if you'd like !! ^^
sorry for rambling i Love talking about things im passionate about i love modding videogame . teehee. anyways i Hope this answered your question(s), if not feel free to send any followup, but i may not respond till later because of sleeping and/or classes. but! i promise i am extremely engaged and will not forgwt abt you anon! yayy !!!! falls over and passes out . happy 3am

A new snapshot from https://sagesacre.com/2021/10/05/first-run-of-batch-21-fermented-hot-sauce/
First run of Batch 21 Fermented Hot Sauce
First round of hot sauce from batch 21. These peppers fermented only 4 weeks before bottling
While a lot of the garden veggies didn’t do all that well this year (more on that later), the Hidden Lake Hot peppers did just fine.
I started Batch 21 of my annual fermented hot sauce at the end of August, but rather than letting letting it all ferment for a full six months as I normally do, this year I’m pulling about half to bottle every few weeks and topping off the fermenter with fresh peppers.
Hot peppers after 4 weeks of fermentation
This is the first round which fermented for about four weeks before getting pureed, adding vinegar and cooking down to a sauce consistency.
My goal is to have a whole bunch of samples pulled from now until March (when I usually bottle) to see how the flavor profile of the hot sauce changes over time.
This first batch is spicy with lots of fresh, hot pepper taste and very little “funk” flavor or aroma from the fermentation. There isn’t much heat up front, but the finish kicks you in the tonsils.

It's been a little more than six weeks since we began the fermentation on Batch 20 of my hot sauce. Today I'm popping open the fermenter to see how it's going and give the peppers a stir to keep thing moving.

Batch 20 of the fermented hot sauce hit 5 gallons of fresh peppers 8 weeks early, so I'm bumping up to 10 gallons by splitting peppers between 2 fermenters. As for what I'm going to do with 10 gallons of finished hot sauce next spring, I have no idea.
