I don't know what day it is anymore. I've been down here for so long that it seems like forever. Maybe it's only been a few days or maybe it's been fifty years. This wasn't how I expected to spend my afterlife but I've been down here in the basement for as long as I've been dead.

My mission? To keep everyone else away from the monsters. 

How do I accomplish this goal? Scaring the shit out of the residents.

So that's why I'm sitting here in the dark right now. I'm waiting for someone to stupidly wander down here so that I can make them pee their pants and run right back up to where they came from.

I hear the door creak open. It's one of the residents and they're talking loudly to someone else. The other person leaves and I hear their footsteps coming down the stairs. The light goes on but I quickly use my powers to turn it off again. It doesn't deter the resident from coming down the stairs with their flashlight in hand.

"Get out!" I growl from the darkness.

That's the first shot fired. It's a warning shot. I've got a lot more tricks up my sleeve. There's no way I'm going to let this person end up dead. I feel like it's my sworn duty to protect these people from what lurks in the dark down here. I'm not a bad ghost, just misunderstood. 

Sometimes it gets lonely. Sometimes I really want to go upstairs and talk to someone but I know that the moment I leave the basement someone will stupidly wander down there and get killed. No way that's going to happen. Not on my watch.

Sure he has to deal with the disgusting waste of human society all day long but at least he gets to come home to a beautiful bride and two great kids. He thinks he'll bring them home something special, maybe he'll pick up some ice cream from the store when he's on his way home.

The next patient arrives and Skylar takes his feet quickly off the desk. He pulls out the file and reads through it fast. He gets the gist of what the problem is but he wants to hear it from the patient as well. "So, how about you tell me a little bit about what you're experiencing?" he asks. "Don't be shy. We're here to help you." He smiles trying to hide his utter disdain for the patients of the asylum. He just thinks they're worthless and disgusting, the unwanted misfits of the state of Maine and surrounding areas. He's just glad they're locked up here and not out in society doing damage.

The alpha female awoke in spirit. The last thing she remembered was looking into the eyes of her former boyfriend as he crushed her throat. Her heart felt heavy. She looked at her hands but she could not see them. She didn't yet know how to make herself appear in a solid form. Her body was still lying where it was when she'd fallen. No one had bothered to pick her up or bury her. There was a lump growing in her throat. She wondered what happened to Danny. Surely he would have made sure that she received a proper Christian burial. Something terrible must have happened to him.

Or, she thought, maybe he didn't really care about her. Maybe he had become the monster she'd seen in his eyes. It was possible the corruption had claimed him completely. She wanted to see him again just to tell him that it was alright, that she didn't hold her death against him. She wanted to look into those blue eyes again and maybe even tell him that she loved him again. After all, ever lonely monster needs a companion. 

She took a floating step forward and stopped. Her body was like a mist or a fog in the wind. She could barely manifest herself to be seen by the human eye. If someone were to look at her they might see a wisp or cloudy figure. Someone was coming down the hallway towards where her body lay. She reached towards them. Her touch would be like a cold shock. 

"Please," she begged. "Lead me to the light." 

She didn't know why she spoke those words. They just tumbled out of her mouth. It was as though her spirit begged to be led to the afterlife. She couldn't figure out the figure in front of her eyes. They seemed blurry or like the puzzle pieces didn't all fit together. She wished it were Danny. She would ever so love to see him again, her only friend. He had tried so hard to protect her but in the end he was her undoing.

If anyone had asked Kurt what had happened, he would respond with the fact that he had no idea what just happened. At one point he was talking to Danny about space and stars, he vividly remembered talking about Pollux to be specific. It was almost like he blinked and then he was in an empty hall, just him and Wolfie.

He shook his head, looking at himself and his dog to make sure they were, still in fact, you know pretty much ghosts because for a while he honestly thought he just dreamt all of this up. But sure enough he was still dead and this was still the hotel. He wasn't even in the same hallway from the look of it. "Well this is a predicament Wolfie, a predicament indeed." He looked down toward his dog.

Something wasn't right though, he could tell by Wolfie's stance that he was on gaurd. Kurt blinked, kneeling down for a minute. "What's wrong ya noodle?" He teased softly, stroking behind the shepherds ears. He'd never seen Wolfie this distressed, and then he growled low in the back of his throat and barked. "Hey hey, what's wrong boy."

First he wasn't where he originally was and now his dog was upset, which was only proving to build up his anxiety and he could feel himself begin to mildly panic. Kurt then looked up and on the wall he saw a shadow of something, he couldn't make out what it was but it looked like it had horns and he froze. Wolfie barked again, trying to lunge and growl, teeth bared, so Kurt did the only logical thing at this point which was to grab Wolfies leash and take off in the other direction, dragging his very much upset dog with him.

Old Zeus woke slowly, as usual, and contemplated the fact that he was still living and had at least one more day in this world.  Once he came to grips with this fact and had sufficient time to roll himself in to a sitting position, he started to get ready for his day.  Normally, he would put his percolator on the stove while he washed up and dressed, but today he found he was fresh out of coffee.  That meant he would actually have to venture into the Inn, a prospect that made him grumble.  He dressed in his usual way: deep green dungarees, tawny cardigan, brown jacket, charcoal galoshes, tweed cap, and clomped out into the garden toward the main house. From the Gardener's shed it was roughly a straight walk to the large front doors of the Inn, but Old Zeus preferred the old servants' entrance into the rear mudroom.  From there he would skulk into the kitchen pantry to pilfer the coffee.  He reminded himself that it wasn't pilfering, after all he was the only one in the place doing any work.  He deserved coffee!  After making a fairly noiseless entry, he began rifling through the pantry like a racoon in an unattended campsite.

Losing people was always hard on her but she kept things bottled up inside and sealed with a cork of silence and quiet dignity. 

She took her place alongside the others and looked down at the ground where her old lover was buried. She thought fondly of all the times they'd had together and she secretly wished she'd been nicer to him. For all the good times they had there had been so many fights and her practically whipping him into submission and molding him into being someone else. She was amazed that for all she'd done to him he never outright hated her and continued to care for her despite all her shortcomings and temper.

"Daniel Aleister McQueen was a good man," she started, her frozen breath hitting the air like an icy cloud. "I never knew much about his past, who his relatives were or his life before we met. I knew he had a rough history but I strove to change his life for the better, but I... failed. All I caused him was misery and pain, and I regret that now."

She continued, "I wish I had treated him with the respect he deserved. I did love him and I believe he loved me at a point as well. As close as we were we were still far apart most of the time and I believe that was my fault. Yes, but I loved him, and I hated him, and our relationship was filled with many bumps and bruises."

"If I could go back and time and develop a stronger bond with him I would do just that. I wouldn't have locked him in the closet when he missed our anniversary. I wouldn't have left his stupid little dog out in the rain so many times. I especially wouldn't have left him handcuffed to the bed for three days because he told me that my dress made me look, in his words, 'like a silly cow'."

She wiped away a tear that came to her eye and licked her dry lips. She so desperately wanted Danny to know that even if it took him dying to make her realize it, she was always quite fond of him. 

"To conclude, I'm very, very sorry, Danny McQueen, for everything I ever did wrong to you. I'll miss you for as long as I live." She took in a deep breath. "Would anyone else care to say a few words?" she asked.

She looked at Mackenzie specifically, still holding her doubts that he was as innocent as he claimed. After the funeral, she would confront him about Danny's death and get the truth one way or another.
