Reading HoL back to back with the final girl support group was a rare Perfect Literary Experience. Because you go directly from That into a thriller about how society simultaneously glorifies and demonizes women who have survived traumatic events, and it really feels like an extension of Karen’s story.
the real horror of House of Leaves is being Karen and having 600 magazine articles and academic essays about why you're a stupid skanky no-good bitch slut whore

Started reading two books last night and both had such major red flags in the first ten pages I put them in the donation pile. One had major pregnancy triggers and the other, I swear to god, on the first fucking page said "she had her shirt slightly unbuttoned to show ample busom" and I was like uh NO. That's what I get for taking a chance on a non queer book (I was doing pretty well lately with the final girl support group and my heart is a chainsaw but man, straight sff authors cannot be trusted). But then I started reading dreadnought and it's A M A Z I N G this is the trans superhero novel you've always wanted. I'm only 1/3 of the way in but I already recommend it 100%.

I went to just check the tag and apparently anyone who's posted about it loves Grady Hendrix and his books, going so far as to say HE'S the male author you trust most with writing women???? ARE WE READING THE SAME BOOKS???
Mostly I just wanted to know if anyone ELSE had to DNF "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" after he has this white lady literally describe a lynching but ONLY in the context of how it affected her white father at 28% in the book and IMMEDIATELY returned it to the library. Like goodreads WARNED me this books was racist and sexist but I wasn't fucking ready for THAT level, y'know? (Also to be clear it WAS racist and sexist before that, which is why I gave up reading and was just listening to the audiobook, which is how I get through books I don't care about. But that is a HARD limit for me.)
And the "Final Girl Support Group" sucked. It was bad idk what y'all read but it was a trash book. "Good at writing women" my ass, your expectations were just on the floor. Or am I just supposed to gloss over the only gay character having a wife who the main characters just let fucking die in a park aND LEAVE HER BODY THERE and everyone just gets forgiven for it?? Was I just supposed to accept that? In addition to the main character being the most annoying fucking character ever and practically every character just being a flat stereotype.
I cannot believe people actually refer TFGSG to people, or that people can somehow gloss over the straight up lynching made as a plot point to the WHITE characters or how every black character is a stereotype and also the vampire seems to only target them in TSBCGTSV.
Grady Hendrix cannot write women and how he writes ANY minority is concerning at best and he's officially moved to "author I will no longer read".

Can we get a sequel to tfgsg where we find out everything the dream king did because you CANNOT tease me with a goth serial killer like that!! The whole book I'm like "these people are trash for idolizing serial killers and glorifying violence" and then they're like "goth serial killer" and I'm like OH OKAY.

Oh God as a gigantic fan of the final girl support group I would love to do a horror movie au in which the virgin and the slut survive together... how amazing would that be? But I'd have to have a bunch of other characters in it that get killed and it's SO HARD for me to kill characters even in aus. We could have a serial killer that killed everybody's shitty parents but like... why would we stop them. I could go off on killing mchie and Martin's shitty hs friends... this is an idea I'm not entirely taking off the drawing board. What if we did a literal tfgsg au where martin, jarvis, rhiannon and some other characters are all survivors of their own serial killers... ohhh I could see that. Because they would all make good final girls. They're all survivors. Can you imagine rhiannon?? Because what we need is a schizophrenic trans final girl. Ohh I can see the killer being like reality bending and fucking with rhiannons hallucinations... dove would make a good final girl too, we could do a ghul cultist thing (because everything I write is also a caitlin r. kiernan au). Then we could do a couple of other final girls who get killed. NOT A BAD IDEA HM.
Jarvis: I'm just saying, if this is a horror movie, I've got to be cautious. The slut always dies first. Martin's the smart, virginal one, he's going to be the Final Girl.
Martin: I'm the what? I'm not a girl or a virgin!
Jarvis: It's an archetype, Martin.

tfgsg is really good in the cabin in the woods sense of asking the questions: why do we like watching these terrible things happen to these girls? Why do we need to punish a jock, a cheerleader, a slut etc? What does the killer represent to us? I LOVE these questions. This book was fascinating. Pays homage to so many slasher films and asks the question what happens to the final girl when it's all over. Seriously, I just finished it and I immediately want to read it again. 9.5/10 would reccomend.
Ok I'm reading the final girl support group and its FUCKING GREAT and while I've never been super into the slasher genre (especially the grosser torturey ones) I did REALLY like scream and scream 2 in high school and I think it's time to rewatch and see some incredibly hot young skeet (and revisit my first celebrity "holy shit I'm bisexual" crush on courtney cox).
