headcannon that the one person who knew about andrew’s scars was matt. when matt came back from rehab after the speedball fiasco, he was terrified of letting people see his track mark scars. andrew silently pulled him aside one day, took off his armbands, and was like “listen. people know yours are there. there’s no point in making yourself miserable trying to hide them. you’re lucky that people already know, and no one is going to ask you about them. you’re a fucking idiot for being ashamed, because you won your fight already.” perhaps andrew was… not quite clean yet. matt knew not to ask about it, but he walked out of his dorm with short sleeves the next day.

hc that Kevin is extremely sensitive to smells so much so that he elects to wash his own uniform because he doesn’t like the detergent that gets used on the group wash. He will go to the shop at 1am if he has to in order to get his detergent despite Nicky claiming his smells the same. He’s very particular with his cologne and even though the rest of the team makes fun of him they can’t deny he doesn’t smell fantastic always. He can literally smell if something is off immediately and will throw it out despite the others claiming it’s still good for a day or two before the used by date. Neil can’t smell for shit anymore (one could say too much blood and smoke and burning skin has seriously tainted his sense of smell) and often will go to Kevin to ask what candles smell like for Andrew or what certain flavours smell like together.

The Columbia House, Sims 4 version

So, a while ago @codename-adler made a post asking people to drop their hcs for what the house in Columbia looks like, and since I was in the mood to play the Sims that day, I figured it would be a fun exercise to try and build what I picture in the game. It took me forever to finish it once I had figured out what I what I basically wanted it to look like, but here it is:

Before sitting down to work on this I roughly scoured the books for what scant descriptions there are to be as accurate as possible, and this is what I found: There is a downstairs bathroom and it has a window (specifically between the shower and the sink), the twins' rooms are upstairs on opposite sides of the hall, Nicky is downstairs past the stairs (as seen from the living room), the living room and kitchen are connected, and there is both a living room and a den. Also there has been no mention of a formal dining room afaik but there is a table in the kitchen, so that is what I went with. Also no garage, just a driveway.

Further I figured the house was pretty blandly suburban, probably a little older and smaller to make it cheap, so that is stylistically what I went with. The living room is open to the hallway and split level, half because of the age thing, and it also influenced the way I went about furnishing the house. I figured Nicky and the twins had probably sourced most of their furniture either from cheap stores (like ikea) or got older stuff for cheap from yard sales and the like, and otherwise I tried to capture an early 2000s vibe. So, here's the floorplan:

First the downstairs hallway. Not much to be said about it: There's a small console to the side for keys and mail and a mat by the door for shoes, plus some plants to make it look a little nicer. Imagine there are family pictures in the frames over the stairs. (I gotta say I do love love the retro vibes of the door though.)

Next up is the den. While half the reason the living room is open concept is the imagined age of the house, this room is the other half. Before I started this, I wasn't sure if there was a difference between a living room and a den, so when Neil heads to the den to sleep at the end of tfc I imagined him heading to some sort of living room space - and then thought it would be nice if there was a direct line of sight to the front door where Andrew was on the porch, keeping an eye on the others, so that Neil isn't fully removing himself from the small family moment they're all having. But since I wanted to be accurate I googled it, and turns out I'm wrong. However, since the den is at the front of the house you kind of have a view on the driveway from the recliners, so the hc is somewhat intact ;)

Also the octagonal shape of the room half killed me because it made the roof all weird and that influenced the upstairs bathroom and it was a whole thing. But I was looking around the game neighborhood for inspiration for the outside and saw this octagonal front room and fell in love, so I had do it. For the furniture it's canon that there are at least two recliners, and I imagined it to be this smaller secondary family room/computer room, hence the small, old TV and desk. The computer is probably a little older than would be realistic, but I couldn't bring myself to give them the imo even more unrealistic tower with a flatscreen monitor, so it is what it is. The Sims 4, despite not being that new, is pretty bad with 2000s era furniture.

Then we have the infamous downstairs bathroom and the probably most detailed description of anything in the house. The window sits between the shower and the sink and is frosted. Unfortunately that isn't an option in the sims, so I put up some shades. But otherwise it's a pretty small and simple room.

The living room was a lot of fun. I tried to make it colorful because I feel like Nicky would try to make it look cheerful, and it's also where we have some of the biggest mixing of aesthetics. On the one hand there's an old cabinet, but then we also have some Billy bookshelves and a very cluttered Lack coffee table (side note why tf do I know all of these Ikea names?) and the most 2000s standing lamp in the back (I swear we had one of these). The armchairs I feel like are something picked up from a yard sale while the couch is more new. The fireplace is original to the house. And then of course there is a hi-fi system in the back. In game that's just a record player, I think, but realistically they would have at the very least a cd and casette player on top of that.

Next is the kitchen, which in my original draft was included in the open living plan, but that felt too open, so I changed it to an archway (in addition to changing the layout some). The cabinets are very old, the fridge and stove very basic and clunky, and I feel like that sort of glass dining table is a very 2000s thing (although I may be wrong about that). Now looking at the screenshots I think the chairs might be a little too contemporary, but I'm not about to go back and change anything. It's a very yellow room, but it fits with the generall blue/green/yellow color scheme I mostly went for with the house. Cheerful but in a pretty inoffensive way. This room is also the only one where I used some CC, because I just had to have a wall phone and the Sims 4 just does not have older technology.

And for the last downstairs room we have Nicky's bedroom. This is one of my favorite rooms in the whole house, and it came together so easily once I had the bed picked out, it was really fun. This is the most color in all of the house, which I felt fits Nicky, and then I went for this sort of hybrid adult/teen aesthetic because he's sort of caught in that transition phase. On the one hand we have a cleaner look, a framed painting, centered bed, nothing too messy despite the loud colors, but then in the corner we just have the pride flag and some posters taped to the wall in a way that looks very leftovers from a teen/young adult phase. Also please imagine there is a picture of Erik in the photo frame in that corner.

Then we're moving upstaris with a very uninspiring first look at the hallway. Nothing really here, a hall closet and a plant but otherwise not much effort put in here. I do wanna say that in reall life the measurements of the house would be a lot different and so this space would probably be smaller (i tried to make it so with the closet, but it still feels a little big)

The upstairs bathroom(s) unfortunately suffered from the roof that sits around it, making it take up more space than I wanted it to. I think realistically it would all be one big room, with the laundry next to the showertub combo and the toilet beside the double sink, but because that would have been too little going on for the size the room would have taken up in game, I split it up into a separate toilet, laundry in the hallway extension, and then the bathroom with the tub and the double sink. I do like the decals in the toilet room, I think either those are leftover from previous owners of the house and Nicky refused to take them down or he put them up in order to make the room look a little less boring and the twins absolutely hate them. I also really like the brown color scheme of the tiles, it looks very old fashioned and I like that.

And lastly the twins' bedrooms. First up, Aaron: I picked green and black for the color scheme and then the very light wood color that all of this very basic Ikea furniture comes in to lighten up the room somewhat. The layout is also very open, so that the black doesn't come across as too oppressive. Here we also again have like on the one hand some framed prints to seem a little more sophisticated mixed with just posters put up over the desk. I went with a gamer theme for those, which given the canon presence of a gaming console (not pictured in the living room) felt right. Like obviously it belongs to all of them, probably, but also if I had to pick who uses it the most that's Aaron. Also making these rooms I developed this hc that the beanbags in the dorm are just taken from the twins' rooms, so I made sure to give each of them one.

And last but not least, probably my favorite room in the house because I'm biased af: Andrew. I legit got a little emotional furnishing this because I love him and it was so fun to imagine what his room would look like. The main color is obviously black, and the basic furniture is all the same as in Aaron's room, just in a black swatch. The whole thing imo teeters between cozy and overwhelming, and the layout certainly adds to that with the Kalax separating the room instead of being shoved to the side. But when I put the furniture down before moving it to its intended places I sort of just had it standing there and it felt right. I'm not sure if in actuality Andrew would dislike not being able to see the door or if he would prefer having an obstacle like that between the bed and door, but I do like the effect it creates. Then we got this punching bag which I also felt he probably would appreciate, and lastly in my head the red wall is because Nicky put his foot down on painting the whole room black and so Andrew picked the most aggressive, terrible red just to be contrarian (but it does match with some of the posters and the punching bag and everything). Also over both of the twins' beds is the closest the game has to glow in the dark stars, which I imagine Nicky put up and while they complain that they're not little kids they actually do love those a lot.

I love how the AFTG fandom has been expanded upon so far from the Canon content; I don’t mean just overwriting potentially questionable canon choices but also creating its own content surrounding the USC Trojans, Pro-teams etc, like Laila and Alvarez were created in response to the first fanfiction written about TFC being about the Trojans and two original female characters a fan wrote about, It’s so interesting to read about when someone creates fan fiction surrounding topics that weren’t even touched upon in canon, or the fact that the majority of us, despite not being mentioned, come to the same conclusions and head canons regarding certain characters, like we’ve all universally agreed that Matt and Dan aren’t white, Allison is tall, or Jeremy is tanned etc

thinking about tfc instead of studying and i shall jumble down my thoughts on the new book and why i probs won't read it:

a) my entry into fandom as one of the first to write fic (there were less than 50 tfc fics on ao3 when i wrote touchstone which is buck wild) was triggered by 50% enjoyment of the characters and 50% the thought I could do better. whether or not this was true when i was 23 doesn't matter and is in retrospect pretty funny but still.

b) i was a fucked up 23 year old and my involvement in the fandom back then was tied up in my mental health being a total dumpster fire to the point where the two main features of 2016 and 2017 for me were aftg and being super depressed. and i just don't wanna go back there tbh. it's very tangled up in my head and i don't love it.

c) totally undeveloped characters from ten+ years ago that have been widely explored by fandom including me are always going to be weird to read canon stuff about after this much time. i didn't like the extra content for that reason (and also that the author was needlessly into increasingly violent untagged stuff that kept popping up on my dash despite my best goddamned efforts) and i feel the same way about a new book.

anyway this is my very public diary and opinion and y'all can do what you want ofc but i will probs continue to live in peace and judiciously blacklist the tags

Heya! Since the 7th comic has been confirmed, Id like to ask you 2 things. What do you want out of the finale? And since I've seen you have issues with the comics sometimes, what would you do differently?

I think I'll answer these in reverse order, it's been a weird path of at first finding them super funny if somewhat dated to being more... ehhh... on them.

I think the main problem is that they suffer from being mean-spirited. Like, looking at other TF2 media and the games, you get the feeling of these goofy characters inhabiting a somewhat serious world. These guys are losers, but you root for them, and it feels good to see them win.

In the comics Soldier is just stupid. Demoman is just sort of incompetent. Even Heavy's serious moments get sort of diluted by the absurdist humour rather than complemented I find. The TFCs are all sadists or pedophiles unless it's Fred being bumbling and hapless. Engie, Admin and Gray all sort of exist to make the plot go forwards and don't have much in the way of character arcs or shifts in dynamics.

Actually... idk if any of them have much in the way of character arcs. The world they inhabit not only doesnt take itself seriously but every potential development has to be lampshaded by having something ridiculous happen right after. It's cynical.

Like I think more and more the whole writing philosophy underpinning it just doesn't vibe with me, and it's not even like longing for it to be Everything or a super lore-heavy intellectual endeavour but looking at the whole even when I enjoyed some of the parts I don't feel like there's enough binding threads to be attached to the plot or feel that intrigued by the story being told and where it's heading. Or even just to be so in love with the character portrayals as to want to see where they end up.

it's hard to want anything at this point or even feel particularly excited. Part of it is like. I think the way people approach media and canon as an irrefutable lore that cannot be challenged is dumb and the fact that this thing is as hyped up as much as it is means whatever happens, folks are probably gonna love it, hate it and henceforth build their own ideas around it - even by subverting it. I dont think I like the overall story enough to be that thrilled with the ending, whatever happens.

I think I'd be ok with not liking it more if this wasnt like. The definitive TF2 Story now.

whats even worse is that kevin is karen 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 beautiful but not very smart…… i think theres an argument for kevin as gretchen but at least at the point of canon jean seemed to do most of the upkeeping of riko’s reputation + was (rightfully) the anxious mess of the three so. i see it all in my beautiful mind palace :)

making Renee a lesbian who realised in her 20s makes so much sense to me because it would just add so much more to her inner turmoil and her grappling with faith.

I like to think that in her younger years in the gang, she kind of thought that she was attracted to men but in the aftermath realised it was more about their validation, or what she could gain from them. Learning to uncouple the idea of male validation from genuine attraction took years of work.

And I’ve seen a lot of discussion and posts about the idea of the monsters and the upperclassmen mirroring each other and how Renee mirrors Andrew. Andrew who also had to grapple with the idea of his homosexuality. Andrew who is a gay man. Renee who is a lesbian woman. It just makes so much sense that they could also bond over the shared struggle of figuring themselves out after being hurt.

And you may be thinking, but what about all the subtext with Jean in the actual books? I say have you considered that Jean connects with her because she is just a good person, who is kind to him, and listens, and is a genuine friend who wants nothing but his safety.

Anyway, Renee lesbian supremacy because learning to experience her faith and sexuality in a healthy way is such a Renee thing to do.

Listen... LISTEN. I know Henry's an emotionally messed up shut in. I know he's basically gone nuts by the time of Pizza Sim. I know he's morally grey. I know all that... But

Number 1: You can't hand me a character who to speaks to me due to socially suffering because of how trapped in his own head he is, let me relate to him in a way I have rarely felt with any other character, and then yank him away from me and tell me he's a bad person. The primary reason I won't read TFC is because I can't take that.

Number 2: I made him a good guy in the Greg Punching Mike in the Nose fic under the impression that he only loses it after Charlie dies. Charlie isn't dead, Henry's still sane. William's jealousy towards Henry in that fic (the jealousy that would have motivated him to kill Charlie if things had gone as canon) stems from Henry having no way to relate, but trying to give advice anyway. William hates being told how wrong he is by someone who doesn't understand (and already hates himself enough) he goes to take out Charlie as revenge.

Number 3: Greg Punching Mike in the Nose AU Henry is still off in his own world. He really is almost as oblivious as William thinks he is, but without the malice.

Number 4: I get it, Henry's bitter and cold. But, he also "seemed like a nice enough guy but was obviously terribly alone". Can't I use that as the basis for my characterization? Pizza Sim is 40 years after Charlie died. People change in 40 years. What about before the murders, huh? Can't he just be awkward and trying his best and then get jaded later? Most of my fics are about before.

I don't want people to think I'm dumb because I wrote a less then accurate fan fiction.

The Fae king and queens have gone away, closing the knowes behind them and abandoning their offspring to the mortal world. As the Fae have spread far and wide, their bloodlines thinning if not vanishing forever as they flee from mortal persecution... two Fae have found a way to reopen the knowes - Kayleigh Day and Tetsuji Moriyama. The Fae regroup once more, the balance of power shifted amongst them, and 'changelings' appear now and then in the mortal population.

Andrew Doe is one of those changelings, a young child suffering in the foster system, shunned by his peers for some reason and hearing voices in his head.

Alex - the latest name gifted to him by a charm - is on the run along with his mother from his father, using their talents as shadow walkers to slide between worlds and stay one step ahead of the powerful Fae. Except even that is not enough anymore. Except that's not Alex's only talent.

Try #2 wording the Hunger AU questions I want to ask, let's see if this one also ends up with me giving up and giving tidbits instead. XD

The quick, TL;DR version: I'm curious about the characters' backstories before fic's canon/Hermitcraft canon.

The very long version: MCYT fandom is in this weird ambiguous area where you *technically* have access to a lot of info from the content creators' IRL lives and their past SMPs/Let's Plays/etc, but how much of that factors into any one fic's canon changes depending on the author. Each author has different levels of how much "canon" (SMPs, Let's Plays, etc) they've had time to watch, how familiar they are with IRL stuff, how comfortable they are incorporating IRL stuff into their fic, whether everyone is a basic player or whether you have players who are avians or vexes etc., or a variety of other things. Each fanfic author has their own version of canon, and none of them are really wrong, because canon itself is kind of fluid.

Originally, I started asking a bunch of little questions (Are Scott and Jimmy exes? Does Grian still have a biology degree, or something like it? Is Scar still afraid of snakes (and if so, does that fear of snakes also mean a fear of worms)? How close were Grian and Mumbo pre-Hermitcraft (because fanfic and IRL episodes seem to often have different opinions on that)? Does Pearl still turn things upside down if they're in a virtual world where Australia presumably doesn't exist?) However, as I was looking at these questions, I realized it wasn't so much that I wanted like concrete answers to each one, so much as like ... I wanted more of an idea about the characters backstories. Right now, we're very much in Grian's head, and he's not exactly in a good enough headspace to be thinking that much about his own pre-Watcher past, much less anyone else's past. I assume it will be awhile until the fic gets into a place where we can find out some of this info without it feeling awkwardly jammed in, so I just kind of want a better idea of where each character (or at least, Grian + Grian Retrieval Squad) is coming from.

Like, you mentioned all Hermits except for Joe and TFC were spawned, not born, but as examples to show what I mean: how old were Grian & co when they spawned? Did they spawn in a single player world (which I think is implied from how you said single player worlds are formed around players, correct me if I'm wrong) or a multiplayer world? Did they have anything like caregivers/guardians/non-blood-related family when they were younger? What was their first multiplayer experience like, and how'd they find Hermitcraft? What education did they have? What led them to becoming redstoners (Tango and Mumbo), builders (Grian, Scar, and Pearl), or admin (Xisuma)? How did Grian meet Mumbo and/or Pearl? (Reminder, these are just examples of the type of info I'm curious about, not looking for each one to be answered specifically.)

So yeah, basically, not really any specific questions so much as "character backstory info please? *puppy dog eyes*"

OHHH MAN i will fully admit i havent done a ton of research into cc histories and previous smps etc etc-- i know some stuff thru fandom osmosis, but i dont know a lot of details (hence why i find your tidbits really neat!!!!!) and so unfortunately i dont have,,, the most detailed or even semi-detailed answers for this rn 😭😭😭😭😭

I can however offer that i do tend to sorta cherrypick and meld some irl cc stuff with the characters sometimes as almost easter eggs??? So like with the Mumbo and Grian stuff, i'd want to sorta glance at the dates on those irl eps vs the dates of the Evo eps and base backstory stuff of that!!! Basically in short, i'd need to actually do a bit more research and figure out how i want to incorporate things before fully committing to anything just yet!!! Im sorry i dont have a better answer for you 😭😭😭💀💀💀💀

3rd photo is lightblox's full canon appearance!! :3 and in the first 2 photos the ourble stick (TFC!!) and the triangle-looking-but-not-really-a-triangle curser (ycurser (derogatory /hj)) belong to a friend on here called @sunnelliot who has some very silly characters . (they are ALSO up for asks !!!!!) and the first photo on the right is also my sticksona hehehehe,, the thing on their head is a rose and it is also on the usual persona lol. the fourth photo is me practicing among us hands :3
