""SUBURBIA" IS ONE OF LINKLATER'S LEAST-LOVED FILMS, CONSISTENTLY RANKED NEAR THE BOTTOM IN INTERNET LISTICLES..."
NOTE: A film such as this would be mercilessly slammed today as there are virtually zero non-white actors in the primary cast. Furthermore, a film such as this would more than likely bomb even worse today than it did in '97.
"There is something particularly forlorn about the Texas suburb. In the opening frames of Richard Linklater’s SubUrbia, released 25 years ago this month, the camera drifts slowly past subdivisions and superstores plopped dispassionately onto the rolling Texas expanse. This erstwhile frontier, where mavericks and rebels came to wrest their fortunes out of the ground, is a blur of McDonalds drive-throughs and beige, boxy McMansions. It is uniquely dispiriting.
SubUrbia is one of Linklater’s least-loved films, consistently ranked near the bottom in Internet listicles appraising the Austin director’s career. And at least some of that is because it’s kind of a drag. Compared with the rest of what Linklater would, in 1997, call his “hangin’ out quintet” — an oeuvre that included "Slacker," "Dazed and Confused," "Before Sunrise," and his micro-budget debut, "It’s Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books" — "SubUrbia" is certainly less romantic or nostalgic about the dreamy idleness of youth. At the time, Linklater even told the Austin Chronicle that "SubUrbia" marked “the nail in the coffin” for those kinds of stories. It was a bold statement that, thankfully, didn’t prove to be true."
-- TEXAS MONTHLY, "A Reconsideration of "SubUrbia," One of Richard Linklater’s Least-Loved Films," by Sean O'Neal, February 2022

Bart Chat 9.2.19 Greetings all, I’m writing this on Labor Day, and not to belabor this point, but we should be celebrating LABOR on this day, but these days labor, labor unions and the idea of labor are not valued. Years ago, in any newspaper on Labor Day weekend there were stories and editorials about the value of labor, but not so much anymore, and certainly not in the Dallas Morning News. The New York Times had a really nice piece celebrating art workers. I’ve thought for a long time that arts workers were under-appreciated. For every kind of art event, there are the people in front of you and many people sitting in an office or backstage working long, hard hours, often underpaid, and almost always under-appreciated. So when you go to an event or gallery, thank the people you see. When you look at the program book/notes, read the section where they mention staff and volunteers and as you see them, thank them for making it all possible. This week I really want to talk about this upcoming season of Frame of Mind. It starts this Thursday night at 10 PM. Some of the filmmakers will be at a reception in The Texas Theater lobby at 8:30 PM on Thursday, Sept 4th to celebrate the season. We have a great team and a great line up. Along with Raquel, Susan Carol Davis has helped with so many details and Mary Beth Boehm edits with me but does way more in keeping us on schedule. Anne Bothwell, a great gift to all of us in the Dallas art world with her work at Art and Seek, keep Frame of Mind humming along and Bill Young brings a different perspective to my work. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to produce this show with these colleagues and to bring these great Texas filmmakers to your television. The show airs every Thursday night starting this Thursday until Thanksgiving at 10 PM, so set your DVR to record the series. We start with Shatter the Silence, Cheryl Allison’s, meditation on the #MeToo movement here in the DFW area that focuses on the local theatre and church community and how people here have been affected. On September 11th, we have a special show. We’ve seen many satires about what happened on that fateful day, but we have one you’ve never seen before. Jake Zellman, who works as a dispatcher for Southwest Airlines interviewed several dispatchers about their experience and what they did to land the planes that day. After that, we have two portraits of Dallasites, Ingrid a Morissa Maltz’ film about Ingrid Gipson who left her job as a fashion designer to live out a life of solitude in the Oklahoma woods, and Roosevelt Wilkerson, who went from living on the streets to creating handcrafted sticks that are owned by George W. Bush and Pope Benedict XVI. Along the journey, we have portraits of Norm Hitzges, Molly Ivins, Anne Richards, the woman who runs the Czech Stop, an Egyptian prisoner, twenty-five Texans in search of Santa Anna’s prosthetic Leg, several stories and struggles of immigration, critter man, Mean Green Quarterback, Mason Fine, a doctor who researched bone density to make space travel better, journalists trying to compassionately cover a church shooting, teen singing sensation, Luke Chako and a soldier navigating life with PTSD. You will learn what a hangover is, hear how the Peace Corps affected people’s lives, and so much more. So, what else is happening? On Wednesday, we screen the FINALS of the 24 Hour Video Race— these are the best ones, so come and check them out at the Angelika at 7 PM. The Texas Theater is showing a film that uses animation to tell the story of Bunuel, called Bunuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles. I have seen the trailer and it looks great. The Molly Ivin’s film is playing at the Magnolia and at Northpark. The Magnolia is showing The Man Who Knew Too Much. The First Tuesday Social Justice Film Festival is showing Pick of the Litter on Tuesday night at 3839 W. Kiest Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75233 Phone: 214.337.2429. That’s it for this week. See you at the Video Race and please make sure to watch Frame of Mind! Bart Weiss Artistic Director Dallas VideoFest
