The drugmaker AstraZeneca announced on Monday that an early analysis of some of its late-stage clinical trials, conducted in the United Kingdom and Brazil, showed that its coronavirus vaccine was 70.4 percent effective in preventing Covid-19, suggesting that the world could eventually have at least three working vaccines — and more supply — to help curb the pandemic.
The British-Swedish company, which has been developing the vaccine with the University of Oxford, became the third major vaccine developer in this month to announce encouraging early results, following Pfizer and Moderna, which both said that their vaccines were about 95 percent effective in late-stage studies.
AstraZeneca’s results are a reassuring sign of the safety of the vaccine. It came under global scrutiny after AstraZeneca temporarily paused its trials in September to investigate potential safety issues after a participant in Britain developed a neurological illness.
Oxford and AstraZeneca said they would submit their data to regulators in Britain, Europe and Brazil and seek emergency authorization.
The company said its early analysis was based on 131 coronavirus cases. The trials used two different dosing regimens, one of which was 90 percent effective in preventing Covid-19 and the other of which was 62 percent effective.
The regimen that was 90 percent effective involved using a halved first dose and a standard second dose. Oxford and AstraZeneca also said that there were no hospitalized or severe cases of the coronavirus in anyone who received the vaccine, and that they had seen a reduction in asymptomatic infections, suggesting that the vaccine could reduce transmission.
AstraZeneca’s vaccine is expected to come with relatively simple storage requirements, which would be an asset once it gets rolled out. The company has said it anticipates the vaccine will require refrigeration, though it has not provided details about how long and at what temperature it can be kept. Moderna’s vaccine can be kept for up to a month at the temperature of an ordinary refrigerator. Pfizer’s can be kept for up to 5 days in conventional refrigerators, or in special coolers for up to 15 days, but otherwise needs ultracold storage.
AstraZeneca has said it aims to bring data from its studies of its vaccine being conducted overseas to the Food and Drug Administration — which would mean that the agency will likely review and authorize a vaccine before late-stage data are ready on how well the vaccine works in American participants. British regulators already have been conducting a so-called rolling review of the vaccine.
“Today marks an important milestone in our fight against the pandemic,” AstraZeneca’s chief executive, Pascal Soriot, said. “This vaccine’s efficacy and safety confirm that it will be highly effective against Covid-19 and will have an immediate impact on this public health emergency.”
Professor Andrew Pollard, the chief investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, said that “these findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives.”

In the wake of results suggesting that two prospective coronavirus vaccines are remarkably effective, the official in charge of the federal coronavirus vaccine program explained on Sunday news shows how the vaccines might be distributed to Americans as early as next month.
Dr. Moncef Slaoui, head of the administration’s Operation Warp Speed, said that within 24 hours after the Food and Drug Administration approves a vaccine, doses will be shipped to states to be distributed. “Within 48 hours from approval,” the first people would likely receive injections, Dr. Slaoui said on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.”
Two companies, Pfizer and Moderna, announced this month that their vaccines were about 95 percent effective, and Pfizer formally submitted an application to the F.D.A. for emergency approval. Regulators at the agency will spend about three weeks reviewing the application. On Dec. 10, an outside advisory board on vaccines will meet to discuss the application, and the agency is expected to make a decision shortly after that meeting. Moderna is expected to submit its own application soon.
Even if the first vaccine is authorized in mid-December, officials and company representatives have estimated that there will only be enough doses available to treat about 22.5 million Americans by January. Each vaccine requires two doses, separated by several weeks.
Dr. Slaoui said vaccines would be shipped to states, proportioned according to their population, and that states would decide how and where to distribute the doses. He said that likely within a day after a vaccine receives F.D.A. authorization, a committee at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would issue recommendations for which groups should be first to receive a vaccine.
High-priority groups are likely to include frontline medical workers and residents of nursing homes. Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former F.D.A. commissioner, said on the CBS show “Face the Nation” that those groups would likely be followed by other older adults and then expanded to younger adults in the spring. Both he and Dr. Slaoui estimated that tens of millions of adults could be vaccinated by sometime in May.
Immunizations for children would follow. Dr. Slaoui said on the CNN show “State of the Union” that the youngest participants in the clinical trials so far have been 12 to 14 years old and that approval for younger children and toddlers would likely not occur until late in 2021, after clinical trials for those age groups are conducted.
On “Face the Nation,” Larry Merlo, the chief executive of CVS Health, said that pharmacists and other medical staff from CVS plan to immunize residents of more than 25,000 long-term care facilities, beginning about 48 hours after a vaccine is approved. He said that for several years, CVS has been going to nursing homes to administer the seasonal flu vaccine, so “we have the systems, we have the processes, and we have built the logistics directly for the Covid vaccine.”
Mr. Merlo, whose company runs 10,000 pharmacies across the country, also said as the supply of the vaccines increase, they would be administered by CVS pharmacies and also by kiosks and mobile trailers that have been doing coronavirus testing in underserved communities.

Coronavirus patients are swamping U.S. hospitals in record numbers, straining the health care system much more widely than the first acute outbreaks did in the spring.
The total number of patients in hospitals with Covid-19 nationally has hit new highs every day since Nov. 11, when hospitalizations first exceeded the April peak. There were nearly 84,000 on Sunday, according to the Covid Tracking Project.
The surge comes as the Thanksgiving and the December holidays approach, when travel and family visits are expected to accelerate the spread of the virus and further strain hospitals.
With a week of November left to go, the United States has already had its highest monthly case total, reporting more than 3,075,000 new coronavirus cases since Nov. 1, according to a New York Times database. By the time the month is over, the tally could top four million, more than double the number in October.
November’s case total is nearly 2.9 million more than March’s total.
The landscape has changed markedly since March, when the virus was concentrated mainly in outbreaks on the East and West Coasts and in a few big cities like New Orleans and Detroit. In New York City, especially, when hospitals were flooded with patients in the spring, medical workers were flown in from across the nation to help, and the Navy deployed a hospital ship to the city.
Now, though, with the strain being felt nearly everywhere, few hospitals can spare anyone to help in other places, and the focus is on acute shortages of staff, more than of beds.
The explosion of cases in rural parts of Idaho, Ohio, South Dakota and other states has prompted local hospitals that lack such experts on staff to send patients to cities and regional medical centers, but those intensive care beds are quickly filling up.
After months of unrelenting stress from the pandemic, many workers are getting sick themselves, suffering from burnout or even retiring early. Hundreds of nurses near Philadelphia went on strike last week over the trauma of the pandemic, low pay and limited resources.
The military deployed medical crews to help overwhelmed hospitals in El Paso, and the Texas state government has been dispatching thousands of workers to assist in other hard-hit areas of the state. The traveling nurses that some hospitals depend on for crisis staffing are in high demand in many states, and their rates have shot up. Overall, about one-fifth of U.S. hospitals are now short-staffed, according to an NPR analysis of data from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Hospitals can set up more beds, but “where they’re going to get stretched is on personnel,” Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said Sunday on the CBS program “Face the Nation.” “They just won’t have the people to staff them.”
Angelia Gower, a patient access manager in the SSM Health system in St. Louis, said she has seen the problem firsthand. She has been filling in on night shifts after several of her employees contracted Covid-19 and one lost a parent to the disease, creating both a logistical challenge and a morale crisis for her department.
“That takes a toll, on not just my employee and her life, but all of the staff that knows her,” Ms. Gower said.
Early in the pandemic, she said, her team was strained by furloughs brought on by the financial pressures that the coronavirus put on the hospital system. Those furloughs are over, she said, but “we are still working short-staffed.”

The nation’s health experts on Sunday pleaded with Americans to stay home over the Thanksgiving holiday and forgo any plans to travel or celebrate at large family gatherings, even as airports have recorded a significant rise in passengers.
Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease specialist, and other health experts relayed a clear message on Sunday morning news shows: with coronavirus cases surging to record levels across the country, turning nearly every state into a hot zone of transmission, the risk of getting infected, whether in transit or in even small indoor gatherings, is high.
Up to 50 million people could be traveling on roads and through airports in the United States over Thanksgiving this year, according to AAA, the biggest travel surge since the pandemic began, despite strong cautions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health authorities. A video of a packed airport in Phoenix has been circulating widely on social media. As of Sunday, 47 states — all but Hawaii, Maine and Vermont — were considered high-risk zones for viral transmission, and nationwide hospitalizations were at a record 83,227.

— Cleavon MD (@Cleavon_MD) November 21, 2020
“Please seriously consider decisions that you make,” Dr. Fauci said on the CBS show “Face the Nation.” Encountering large numbers of people in airports and on planes is particularly dangerous, he said. Although airlines have invested in air circulation and ventilation systems to minimize viral transmission, Dr. Fauci said, “sometimes when you get a crowded plane, or you’re in a crowded airport, you’re lining up, not everybody’s wearing masks — that puts yourself at risk.”
And gathering indoors, whether you travel or not, carries risk. “When you’re eating and drinking, obviously, you have to take your mask off,” Dr. Fauci said. “We know now that those are the kinds of situations that are leading to outbreaks.”
Dr. Tom Inglesby, director of the Center for Health Security of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said on Fox News on Sunday that because about half of infections are spread by people who don’t have any symptoms, “you can’t assume that you don’t have the virus, and you can’t assume that the people whose home you’re about to enter don’t have the virus, at this point in our pandemic.”
He recommended celebrating Thanksgiving only with the people you live with. People who choose to visit others’ homes should spend as much time as possible outdoors and “should be wearing masks indoors when they’re together, and only removing them when they’re eating.”
In Tulsa, Okla., Victory, a megachurch, canceled a “Friendsgiving” service on Sunday that had called on members to bring a friend after it prompted an outcry, instead opting to give away boxed meals, NBC News reported. The church did not respond to a request for comment regarding its planned “Thanksgiving Day Brunch,” which, according to its website, is set to be held on Thursday in the church’s cafeteria.
Dr. Fauci and others warned that Americans’ behavior over Thanksgiving would have critical implications for the coming weeks of the winter season, including risks to people gathering to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s, because the country is still months away from having wide access to vaccines and therapeutics and the cold weather drives more people indoors.
“We’re going to have to, you know, hunker down, reduce our interactions,” Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former Trump administration Food and Drug Administration commissioner, said on “Face the Nation.”
As an example of the risk, he said that in a state like North Dakota, where case levels are high, there’s a 50 percent chance that someone in a group of 10 people has Covid-19. “That’s the kind of risk we’re facing individually right now,” he said. “And that’s only going to get worse.”

Workers gather for Covid-19 testing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on Monday.Credit…Associated Press
Since the pandemic erupted in China, the country has grown adept at swiftly smothering coronavirus flare-ups by ordering residents across entire cities to line up for nucleic acid tests that can pinpoint carriers. So officials snapped into action after a cluster of infections linked to Pudong International Airport in Shanghai grew over the weekend.
On Sunday, Pudong International Airport ordered cargo handlers and other potentially exposed workers to immediately undergo tests. But this time, the plan faltered badly.
The urgent order prompted a crush of hundreds of workers who merged on an airport parking garage that had been converted into a temporary test center, and video that spread first on Chinese social media showed guards in protective suits struggling to hold back a seething, anxious crowd trying to walk up a ramp. Other video shared by Shanghai residents appeared to show a worker who had fainted being carried out of the garage.
Shanghai authorities ordered the blitz of tests after testing confirmed five cases since Friday linked to the airport, including three workers and two of their spouses. The scenes of workers jammed together drew criticisms that the poorly organized testing only exposed them to greater risks of infecting each other, and the video quickly began to disappear from Weibo and WeChat, China’s two main social media platforms, as censors apparently stepped in.
“Even if the outbreak is urgent, there aren’t even the most basic safety and distancing measures,” said one comment widely shared on Weibo. “This can cause big problems.”
The government moved quickly to combat the anxiety about the cluster and scenes of mayhem. The Shanghai police issued pictures of airport workers in orderly lines, waiting to be tested in the garage — apparently after officials had restored control. “Currently everything is normal and there is an orderly queue for tests,” said The Paper, a news website based in Shanghai.
Chinese health officials appear likely to step up tests and disinfection at airports and other sites that handle imported goods. Earlier this month, tests revealed two infections among freight handlers at the Pudong Airport, and Chinese experts have repeatedly raised the theory that the virus may be carried on goods from abroad.

Hunter Mortensen, a longtime Breckenridge ski patroller, recently shaved for the first time in 10 years. He worked at the resort last week with his ski patrol dog, Huckleberry.Credit…James Stukenberg for The New York Times
Tony Cammarata dreaded the news he had to deliver to his employees: They were losing their beards.
Mr. Cammarata, who oversees the ski patrol for an area in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver, had to clamp down on the facial hair so that the patrol could properly wear their N95 respirator masks.
But he knew this would be a tough measure for the men on his crew (47 of the resort’s 56 patrollers).
“You could tell people they’re not getting a merit increase, that you’re cutting their skiing privileges,” Mr. Cammarata said. “It’s not as bad as telling them they have to shave. The whole beard thing is ingrained in our culture.”
By and large, ski patrol members cutting their beards see it as a small inconvenience for the sake of safety and keeping the slopes active. But all the shaving has come with some peculiarities.
In ski areas like Arapahoe Basin, about 80 percent of the male patrollers have had to drastically change (or introduce) shaving regimens. A chart issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlighting the variety of facial hairstyles permitted with a fitted respirator mask has become a go-to resource.
“It’s one of the funniest government-issued documents I’ve ever seen,” Mr. Cammarata said. “It’s a pictogram with 40-plus styles of facial hair.”
Bearded patrollers say their facial hair serves as protection against the elements — a warm layer in strong winds, blizzards and frigid temperatures.
Still, many patrollers are finding a silver lining. “Most of us look a lot younger and less weathered,” said Hunter Mortensen, a longtime Breckenridge ski patroller who recently shaved for the first time in 10 years.

Ethnographic Introduction
This blog is a compilation of individually researched ethnographies conducted for Anthropology of Infrastructure at the University of Texas at Austin completed by a group of students during the Fall semester. Our group research project focused on water, examining how Austin residents interact with the watershed in everyday life. In Green Cities, Christopher Anderson talks about the definition of “Watersheds”, being “topographically” defined regions that are drained by a given stream or river system. They occur along a range of scale—anywhere from small headwater streams with small catchments to large rivers with watersheds that cover continental regions.” When it comes to the definition of “Watershed Protection”, he defines it as a “myriad of human measure” to protect water quality. Some of these human measures include government policies, programs, and practices; these vary by municipality and region. One such government policy being the 1972 Clean Water Act (CWA), a federal law put in to improve water quality. Other topics mentioned are Best Management Practices (BMP), The Conservation Reserve Program, and the effects of urban development, such as roadways, and the harmful impacts of stormwater runoff. An important thing Anderson points out is “Environmental Flow” to keep a healthy aquatic ecosystem, but from what is seen today, there is not a stable flow of regulations and guidelines to keep these. As we began our research, we settled on the following sites: Town Lake, Hancock Golf Course, Shoal Creek, Waller Creek, Light Loads’s portable showers and laundry facility, and student apartment water use. We depend on each of these sites in our ethnographies to answer our research question. In their Annual Review of Anthropology article, Water Sustainability: Anthropological Approaches and Prospects, Ben Orlove and Steven C. Caton stress the worldwide need to provide an adequate supply of clean water has become an urgent theme in anthropology. Anthropologically, water is not only a resource but also a substance that connects society. Anthropologists examine the different forms of water valuation, the often-unequal distribution of water, the rules, and institutions that govern water use and shape water politics, and the multiple, often conflicting knowledge systems through which actors understand water. Anthropological studies of water offer ethnographic insights into key water sites (watersheds, water regimes, and waterscapes, etc.).
The watershed protection department plays a huge role in protecting Austinites from the potential impact of erosion, water pollution, and flooding. Every interaction with water ranging from sink water to lake water is screened by the Watershed Protection Department for potential toxins that could affect people’s health. Additionally, the department is responsible for effectively disseminating warnings in case of a potential deterrent to health. These responsibilities communicate the key role the department plays in the consumption of water in Austin. Frequently when people think about water consumption, the actions of drinking and washing with water are the first that come to mind. However, while many people may focus on water’s practical uses, its consumption can be observed across a broad spectrum, ranging from its physical functionality to recreational and aesthetic consumption. Water consumption in all forms creates spaces for community and sociability as seen through each of our research sites. From the shower trailers, Light Loads has established for people experiencing homelessness to Waterloo Greenway’s annual Creek Show, Austinites engage with water in a variety of capacities. Additionally, this engagement with water doubles as a space for human interaction facilitated by present infrastructure. This infrastructure is seen within the theme of consumption through functionality and practicality, and the recreational and aesthetic use. We see the everyday use of consumption through daily routines such showering, washing dishes, and doing laundry. Similarly, we see consumption’s reliance on infrastructure when interacting with and within public spaces such as lakes, rivers, and creeks. Through each of our research sites, we examine the interaction with the watershed through the theme of consumption.

Review: Revisit the controversial Biosphere 2 project with Spaceship Earth
youtube
Official trailer for Spaceship Earth, a documentary about the controversial Biosphere 2 experiment in the early 1990s.
In September 1991, amid much media fanfare, eight people entered a closed experimental facility called Biosphere 2 for a two-year stint in total isolation. They endured hunger, a dangerous rise in CO2 levels, interpersonal squabbles, a media backlash, and sharp criticism from the scientific establishment. Today, most people might recall Biosphere 2 as a colossal failure. But the truth is much more nuanced than that, as we learn in Spaceship Earth, Director Matt Wolf’s self-described “stranger than fiction” documentary about the controversial experiment. The film made a splash at Sundance earlier this year, and is now available for streaming on Hulu, Apple TV, and other select platforms.
Biosphere 2, a 3.14-acre facility located in Oracle, Arizona, has a long, colorful history tailor-made for the documentary treatment. Built between 1987 and 1992, its original objective was to be an artificial, fully self-sustaining closed ecological system—a large-scale vivarium, if you will. (It was called Biosphere 2 because the Earth itself is the original biosphere.) There were seven distinct “biome” areas: a rainforest, an ocean with living coral reef, a savannah grassland, a fog desert, mangrove wetlands, an agricultural system (i.e., a small farm), and a human habitat.
Spaceship Earth delves deep into the roots of the project, going back to the 1960s, when John Allen and several cohorts (some would later deem them cultish followers) moved from San Francisco to New Mexico and founded a commune called Synerga Ranch. They were inspired by surrealist/spiritualist French novelist René Daumal, among others, as well as Buckminster Fulller’s Spaceship Earth. They even built their own geodesic dome on the ranch, the better to hold communal gatherings and stage amateur theatrical productions. (They would later tour as the Theater of Possibilities.)
Once the ranch became self-sufficient, Allen grew bored and moved his core group to Berkeley, where they built a ship called the Heraclitus on the Oakland shore. Miraculously, given their lack experience, the Heraclitus proved seaworthy. Under the umbrella of what would become the Institute of Ecological Technologies, they also founded several successful business ventures around the world, in partnership with Ed Bass, the heir to a massive Texas oil fortune who was among those drawn to Allen and Synerga Ranch.
All that is prologue to Allen’s idea for Biosphere 2, inspired in part by the strong environmental themes of the 1972 post-apocalyptic film Silent Running. In that film, all plant life on Earth is becoming extinct, and a group tries to preserve as many specimens as possible in greenhouse-like geodesic domes, attached to a large spaceship just outside the orbit of Saturn. For his real-world project, Allen envisioned an enclosed, completely self-sufficient structure on Earth that could serve as a test module for setting up a colony on the moon or Mars.

That first two-year experiment produced mixed results. The biospherians managed to grow or produce 83 percent of their food, especially as their farming skills improved, but hunger was constant. A few ants and cockroaches snuck into the ecosystem before it was sealed, and over time threatened the crops. Just 12 days in, biospherian Jayne Poynter accidentally cut off the tip of her finger in a threshing machine while winnowing rice. She had to be temporarily evacuated for surgery, returning a few hours later. But she brought back a duffel bag—purportedly containing circuit boards, plastic bags, and a planting plan—which fueled media speculation that she was sneaking in food, and that the grand experiment had already been compromised.
Most seriously, oxygen levels began falling precipitously, down to just 14.5 percent (what one might experience at an elevation of 13,000 feet). When the team’s medical doctor became so impaired that he could no longer add columns of numbers, the managers intervened, pumping in pure oxygen to restore the balance. It was later determined that the primary culprits for rising CO2 were microbes in the enriched soils, which produced CO2 faster than the plants could produce oxygen. Making matters worse, the unsealed concrete in the habitat reacted with the CO2 to form calcium carbonate, effectively sequestering both oxygen and CO2.
The low oxygen levels no doubt contributed to the interpersonal tensions and overall low morale; ultimately the biospherians split into two factions that weren’t speaking to each other when they finally emerged after two years. But despite the infighting, they still managed to continue to cooperate for their shared survival. The same could not be said for management. Rifts emerged over the focus of the research, and Bass (frustrated by the massive cost over-runs, among other issues) ultimately took out a restraining order and ousted Allen and his team with the help of several police officers.
Some considered Biosphere 2 to be little more than “ecological entertainment.”
While Allen brought on several professional scientists as consultants for various aspects of the project, there were still those who considered Biosphere 2 to be little more than “ecological entertainment,” or, more harshly, “New Age drivel masquerading as science.” One early critic was Ghillean Prance, director of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, who initially dismissed the project and claimed Allen et al.’s “interest in science is not genuine.”
But Prance later changed his tune, impressed by the group’s organization and passion, and went on to design the rainforest biome. “You shouldn’t hold their past against them,” he told the Phoenix New Times in 1991. Independent scientific assessments in 1992 and 1994 concurred that the project was a legitimate laboratory for investigating relevant ecological questions. Nonetheless, in 1999 Time included Biosphere 2 in a list of the 100 worst ideas.
There is much to like about Spaceship Earth. Given all the controversies that have erupted over the years, it’s an inherently fascinating topic, and Wolf approaches it with an even hand, whether he’s portraying the group’s early days as rather naive idealistic dreamers, or chronicling the inevitable pain of disillusionment. Wolf has captured the essence of why Biosphere 2 proved to have such a strong hold on the public’s imagination—and just how impressive it was that Allen and his group managed to pull it off at all.
It’s easy to sneer at their hippie roots, or cringe at the amateur theatrics of the Theater of Possibilities, but you have to admire the ingenuity and sheer chutzpah of these people. The fact remains that they took on a daunting challenge and (mostly) got it done. There were setbacks and disappointments, but we really did gain some valuable knowledge from Biosphere 2. (Sadly, much of the original data collected from that two-year experiment has never been analyzed, and may be lost. ) As for the cult accusations, Allen is still living on Synerga Ranch with several members of that original group—friendships that have endured for some 50 years. Cults aren’t typically that enduring.

That said, at nearly two hours, Spaceship Earth is overlong; it would work better at a more nimble 85-90 minutes. It also hews a little too closely to a strict chronological timeline. After a short introductory 1991 segment, Wolf jumps back 25 years and spends a big chunk of the film reminiscing about the group’s earliest days. That period is vital to provide context for Biosphere 2, but it’s also frankly the least interesting. The material could have been trimmed back substantially—possibly even sprinkled throughout the documentary as flashbacks when that context was relevant—while still making Wolf’s major points.
Spaceship Earth ends rather abruptly with the premature termination of the second Biosphere 2 mission (which did manage to achieve total food sufficiency with no need for oxygen injections), the ousting of the original management team by Bass, and the dissolution of Space Biospheres Ventures. It spends very little time on what’s become of the facility since then. Biosphere 2 is no longer a closed system experiment. Columbia University switched the research focus to that of a “flow-through” system when it took over operation in 1995, using it to manipulate and study shifting CO2 levels for global warming research—notably the impact of high CO2 levels and ocean acidification on coral reefs.
Today, Biosphere 2 is owned and operated by the University of Arizona. Some of the older structures outside are a bit worse for the wear, like the old test module and original quarantine labs. But solid science is still being done on-site, and Ed Bass continues to supply occasional funding, most recently donating $30 million in 2017. The projects are smaller and more focused, including a lunar greenhouse, designed to explore how to grow vegetables on the moon or Mars; a vertical farming project constructed in Biosphere 2’s west lung; and a Landscape Evolution Observatory, tracking how volcanic rock slowly develops over time into rich soil. Biosphere 2 also offers public tours and hosts space camps and small conferences.
For Wolf, the timing of his film’s release couldn’t be more relevant to our current predicament. “While making this film, I could never have imagined that a pandemic would require the entire world to be quarantined,” he said in a statement. “In light of COVID-19, we are all living like biospherians, and we too will re-enter a new world. The question is how will we be transformed? Now with a visceral sense of the fragility of our world, it’s on us to protect it.”

The inglorious rise of Two Buck Chuck
The tale of two men, one wine brand, and the economic revolution of an entire industry.
BY ZACHARY CROCKETT
Walk into almost any Trader Joe’s store and the first thing you’ll see is an enormous display of Charles Shaw wine — or, as it’s more affectionately known, “Two Buck Chuck.”
At $2.99 per bottle, Two Buck Chuck is one of TJ’s all-time best-selling products. Since debuting in 2003, it has won the hearts of critics and customers alike and has sold over 1B bottles.
“I’ve tried a lot of cheap wine,” a young Trader Joe’s-goer in Austin, Texas assures me. “Charles Shaw is the crème de la crème.” Clutching two bottles of 2017 vintage Chardonnay, a shopper in Palo Alto, California adds that it “goes down smooth and [is] cheaper than water.”
How is a supposedly decent wine sold at such a low price-point? And where did it come from? This is the tale of one wine brand, two men, and the economic revolution of an entire industry.
Will the real Charles Shaw please stand up?
Charles Shaw embodied the elitist aura of the wine industry.
He obtained degrees from West Point and Stanford Business School. He worked as an investment banker in France and spent his summers wearing polo shirts in Nantucket. He could sniff a glass of Gamay Nouveau and pick out the “notes of banana.”
In the early ‘70s, while banking in Paris, Shaw fell deeply in love with the craft of winemaking.
So he quit his banking gig, bought 20 acres of land in Napa, California with his wife’s inheritance, and launched Charles F. Shaw Winery.
Shaw’s wines were not crafted for the plebes. Debuted in 1978, his flagship bottle, a Beaujolais, retailed for $13.50 ($35 today), and won international acclaim. “It had an amazing garnet color and was really quite striking, he later told Thrillist. “I liked to drink it with a Tiffany's all-purpose glass.”

TOP: Charles Shaw (left) samples a glass of his 1986 Gamay Nouveau (The Tennessean, April 23, 1987); BOTTOM: An advertisement for one of Shaw’s “fine boutique wines” (San Francisco Examiner, 1990)
Charles Shaw Winery soon expanded to 115 acres, 60 employees, and 15k cases per year. Business was booming. Shaw and his wife, Lucy, epitomized the Haute couture of Napa Valley: Tall, elegant, and beautiful, they turned heads at fancy galas and industry events.
Then, in the late ‘80s, things began to fall apart.
Shaw lost “hundreds of thousands of dollars” after a supplier error tainted 1.4k barrels of wine. He dealt with a devastating root louse infestation that claimed 50 acres of his vines. He over-anticipated the demand for Burgundies. He went through a nasty divorce that took a toll on his management. Then, a recession hit.
By 1992, Shaw was $3m in debt and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. He “stashed the last of his cash under the floor of his car,” took a final glance over his trellised hills, and left town.
The box wine baron
Fred Franzia did not share Shaw’s air d'élégance.
He was unrefined and heavyset, with a body shape the New Yorker likened to a “gourmet marshmallow” (Business 2.0 Magazine called him “a cross between John Madden and Shrek”).
Reclusive and gruff, he shied away from public appearances and scoffed at Napa Valley’s wine snobbery. He referred to winemakers as “bozos.” He didn’t care for France.
Franzia came from a long lineage of winemakers. His great-grandfather, Giuseppe, had immigrated to California’s Central Valley in 1893 and set up Franzia Brothers Winery (later sold to Coca-Cola); his uncle, Ernest Gallo, had built the largest wine exporter in California.
In 1973, Franzia launched his own wine company, Bronco Wine Co. In a rickety wood-paneled trailer held together with duct tape, he set out to produce extremely cheap, high-quality “super-value” wines — wines that rejected the pretentiousness of Napa Valley.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c896f06d46d22ba389b3c1aa50f65b2e/tumblr_inline_pf5ivuTDxP1qzd9qg_540.jpg)
TOP: Fred Franzia (right) breaks ground on Bronco Wine Co. with his brothers (via Bronco); BOTTOM: Franzia inhales grapes (via Michael Kelley, Business 2.0 Magazine)
Initially, Bronco operated as a wholesaler, buying bulk wine and selling it to larger wineries at a profit. But soon Franzia saw an opportunity to produce his own cheap wines — wines, as he later put it, that “yuppies would feel comfortable drinking.”
He developed a strategy of buying out distressed wineries with distinguished-sounding names — Napa Ridge, Napa Creek, Domaine Napa — and using them to sell his stock of less-desirable Central Valley wines. Through a legal loophole, he could say the wines were “Cellared and Bottled in Napa,” so long as the brand was founded prior to 1986.
On a summer day in 1995, a few years after Charles Shaw Winery went bust, Franzia purchased the winery’s brand, label, and name for a mere $27k.
"We buy wineries from guys from Stanford who go bankrupt,” he later boasted. “Some real dumb-asses from there."
Unbeknownst to the real Charles Shaw, Franzia was about to transform his once-fancy wine brand into an impossibly cheap “everyman’s juice” — and change the wine industry forever.
How Franzia “shorted” the wine business
In the late 1990s, there was a wine boom: Vineyard acreage grew by 24% and suddenly everyone from car mechanics to plumbers was putting up vines on spare California land.
Soon, there were rumblings that the industry was over-producing grapes and could face a crash. While most dismissed the warning, Franzia hedged a bet on it.
He constructed a faux-Tuscan, 92k-square-foot bottling plant with high-speed lines that were capable of producing 18m cases per year — 2x the amount of wine in the entire Napa Valley. He also stopped producing wine altogether, and his 452 stainless steel storage tanks sat empty, waiting for the market to go belly-up.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8244cf0b28308782702c606c3631db2b/tumblr_inline_pf5iwyO60n1qzd9qg_540.jpg)
A small portion of the vineyards at Bronco’s San Joaquin Valley vineyard in Central California (Bronco)
Franzia’s intuition paid off. The industry soon faced a massive glut, and while other vintners suffered surpluses, he bought up as much cheap wine as he could get his hands on.
Wineries were forced to “purge” massive quantities of their high-quality wine, or risk oversaturating their own market. Franzia was able to suck it up for as little as 50 cents/gallon — an astonishingly low price compared with the going rate of $10/gallon just a few years earlier.
Franzia had let the Charles Shaw Winery brand sit dormant since purchasing it years before. Now, he was ready to bring it back to life.
Using the exact same name and label (which pictures Shaw’s old tennis court pagoda), he launched a large-scale production effort. His facilities ran 24 hours a day, 7 days per week — and in a short time, he’d churned out a two-story-tall stack of Charles Shaw cases ready for distribution.
The inglorious rise of Two Buck Chuck
Trader Joe’s already carried several other wine brands operated by Franzia, and they were willing to give Charles Shaw a whirl.
In the Spring of 2002, the label made its retail debut at the shockingly low price of $1.99 per bottle. Early on, in an internet chat room, a Trader Joe’s employee dubbed it “Two Buck Chuck” — a moniker that caught the eyes of budget-conscious shoppers.
These were the days following the Dot-Com bubble and the early 2000s recession: There was a demand for cheap wine. But nobody — not even Franzia — could’ve anticipated the wine’s success.
Come Fall, certain locations were selling up to 6k bottles per day. People would come to Trader Joe’s and fill up their SUVs with dozens of cases; some days, customers would line up outside the stores before they opened, and an entire supply would sell out in minutes.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b354cbd3a3e9b433dacd186ea6463467/tumblr_inline_pf5jbr9wJK1qzd9qg_540.jpg)
Charles Shaw wines were met with surprisingly good reviews (via assorted newspapers 2003-4)
“People went apeshit,” Keith Wallace, a wine expert, told Thrillist. “It was the ‘Macarena’ of wine… And it was this blue-collar pride thing. People thought, ‘This bottle is just as good as one that's $20. Screw those snobs.’"
By early 2003, Charles Shaw had already sold 60m bottles, accounting for 12% of all of California’s wine shipments within the state. It was, by wine experts’ estimation, the fastest-growing wine in US history. When Franzia sold his 400-millionth bottle of Charles Shaw in 2009, he had only one thing to say: “Take that and shove it, Napa.”
For a $2 bottle, it performed astonishingly well in competitions. The Chardonnay won a double-gold at the 2007 California State Fair, and Wines & Vines Magazine rated it higher than a $67 bottle in a blind tasting.
Two Buck Chuck, declared one critic, had “revolutionized wine drinking” forever.
How to make money on a $2 bottle on wine
Franzia pulled off something wine experts never thought possible: He managed to produce a rock-bottom-priced wine that people actually like to drink — and make money on it. How on Earth is that possible?
For starters, though the Charles Shaw label boasts “Cellared and Bottled in Napa,” most of the wines’ grapes come from the Central Valley, where Franzia owns 35k+ acres of vineyards. Though he capitalizes on the Napa name, his operation is rooted in an area with dramatically cheaper land and operation costs.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/42fba6e834447ae9958feeeeda6621f9/tumblr_inline_pf5j4clWfi1qzd9qg_540.jpg)
Franzia’s enormous holdings have allowed him to produce Charles Shaw wines at an extremely low price point (The Hustle)
These days, most Charles Shaw bottles contain a blend of bulk-purchased grapes and grapes grown by Franzia on his own land. Using a suite of 700k-gallon tanks (most small wineries use 700-gallon tanks), he is able to pump out 90m gallons of wine every year.
Franzia also has a hand in nearly every part of the supply chain: He maintains his own bottling plant (which produces 250 bottles per minute), a 62m-gallon storage facility, and a distribution network that includes a fleet of steel tanker trucks.
Lastly, every corner is cut: He uses oak chips to ferment his wine rather than barrels; he swaps real corks for composites; he subs traditional wares for lightweight bottles and crates.
Franzia has stated that his tactics would make the average farmer “shit in his pants.” But his robust empire, tremendous output, and ruthless bulk-buying tactics have allowed him to keep prices down and earn reported revenues of ~$500m per year.
Just business
Today, Charles Shaw lives in Chicago and works at the Chicago Board of Trade, a futures and options exchange.
At 74 years old, he has mostly moved on from wine — though he once referred to the continued use of his name as “embarrassing and demeaning.” He has never seen a penny from Two Buck Chuck.
"It's not a Napa wine, and not of the quality of the Charles Shaw brand [that was] estate grown with layers of complexity,” he told the Napa Valley Register, during the height of the Two Buck Chuck boom in 2003. "To take [my name] and come out and have a lesser wine from another appellation — that isn't what I started out to do, was it?”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/66b8cb9471864b1ae02d95e090317da2/tumblr_inline_pf5j5oDNDE1qzd9qg_540.jpg)
Charles Shaw and Fred Franzia today (The Hustle)
Franzia, on the other hand, continues to rake in the big bucks from his Charles Shaw and his other 150 labels.
On his compound in the sparse agricultural town of Ceres, California, he works 100-hour weeks. As his friend, Michael Mondavi, once said: “He sleeps, drinks, eats the wine business... He doesn’t worry about yachting or golf. Just business.”
His role in changing the wine industry has earned him near universal hated by “true wine people” — mainly vintners who claim he’s “cheapened” the good Napa name. But this doesn’t bother him much.
“You tell me why someone’s bottle is worth eighty dollars and mine’s worth two dollars,” he retorted. “Do you get forty times the pleasure from it?”

“Bagdad Cafe” (1987)
The basics: Wiki | IMDb | Ebert
Opened: Percy Adlon’s Bavarian-housefrau-in-the-desert comedy Bagdad Cafe opened at the Vogue on Friday, September 16, 1988. It played once a day for one week, and as far as I can tell, never screened in Louisville again.
Also on the bill: During the six days it was showing in Louisville, it played with the 1987 Italian drama The Family. Both were shooed out the following week for Louis Malle’s acclaimed Au Revoir Les Enfants (and also for James Fox’s much less acclaimed White Mischief).
What did the paper say? ★★1/2 in the Courier-Journal, though this was another one outsourced to Janet Maslin at the New York Times. She said it was “too slow-paced to work as a comedy” and “simultaneously shapeless and pat,” but praised Marianne Sagebrecht’s performance as Jasmine, the German tourist who befriends C.C.H. Pounder’s Brenda, the harried owner of a roadside diner in the Mojave Desert.
What was I doing? I was eight years old. Even if I could’ve seen it (the nudity makes it unlikely), I’d have been bored. This is potentially something I could have rented in high school. But it didn’t even look like it was on cable that often, based on the listings.
youtube
Like Lair of the White Worm, which also screened for one week a few months later, considering Bagdad Cafe in the context of the Vogue Theater in 1988 is to consider some very low numbers. There’s no way that more than a handful of people saw this during the week. The lukewarm review in the C-J didn’t inspire much confidence (the local critic didn’t bother writing about it), there were no ads in the paper, and word-of-mouth only goes so far if it’s playing for one weekend. I’d be curious who turned out, but these are the sorts of the facts that are lost to historic record. Maybe some German ex-pats who saw anything playing in German. Percy Adlon didn’t have the devoted following that some of his West German colleagues like Fassbinder, Herzog and Wenders had, but perhaps there were a few film nerds who loved the New German Cinema and turned up out of curiosity. So for six screenings, maybe we’re looking at about a hundred people, max.
This is the kind of movie that falls by the wayside in the United States, although apparently it was enough of a hit in Germany that the real Bagdad Cafe in California, where the movie was filmed, remains a tourist destination for Germans to this day. It’s funny in a low-key way, and it’s got the sort of aimless ‘80s indie weirdness that feels charming viewed thirty years later. Fuzzy aimlessness onscreen was in a transitional state in the ‘80s, I think: less grim or politically fraught than the ‘70s version (a la Altman), and not quite as self-aware or studied as the ‘90s version (a la Kevin Smith).
The movie begins with a series of low, flashy shots and untranslated German dialogue between Jasmine and her soon-to-be former husband, who abandons her in the desert after an argument. It’s stylized to the point where it seems almost like a hip trailer. It’s kind of hard to say what Adlon had in mind for the movie, as far as whether he’s making a cool hipster curiosity or a sweet and cuddly tale of friendship and love. His MTV-influenced camerawork and minimalist dialogue would seem to indicate the former, while the title track is a bubbly harmonica ballad that suggests the latter.
It’s not really a movie with any big ideas, which is kind of refreshing. Adlon and his partner Eleonore, who co-wrote it, seems to regard the oddball small-town Southwestern community as a type of racially integrated paradise inhabited by outcasts and eccentrics, African-American, Hispanic and Native. The characters’ primary problem is not poverty, lack of social services or racism, but a sort of good-natured aimlessness that can be set right by a little bit of stoic German know-how. Jasmine and Brenda are at loggerheads at the beginning -- Jasmine, a provincial German hick, has a weird, racist fantasy about being boiled in a stew initially (!), and Brenda is pretty provincial herself, instantly suspicious enough of this German woman to call the local sheriff (!!).
Eventually, though, they build a relationship over time that blossoms into a professional partnership. Jasmine tidies everything up, and more importantly, picks up some magic tricks from a kit left in her husband’s suitcase. By the end, the diner has a floor show that’s made it a destination for truckers and tourists. The warmth and eccentricity reminds me much less of a brutal quasi-nihilist like Fassbinder than someone like Jonathan Demme. Proto-Andersonian character-focused whimsy was in ample supply during the period, though, so I don’t know if this one made much of an impression nationally (and certainly not locally). Not all of these could become cult films, I suppose.
A lot of German filmmakers seemed to be fascinated by the United States in the 1970s and ‘80s, like Wim Wenders, whose Paris, Texas deals with some of these ideas a little bit more effectively. I wonder how a reversed Bagdad Cafe would play today, now that the roles have partially reversed from the 1980s: United States is a tired, decaying superpower in decline, and Germany often seems to be the last best hope of democracy. What would a displaced Texan tourist bring to a community of people in Berlin or Frankfurt or small-town Bavaria? Not in the familiar way of a free-spirited American liberating a bunch of uptight Germans (though, to some extent, that’s what happens here: Jasmine is able to let her inner magician/cabaret star shine in this free-spirited environment).
Rather, made from a German perspective, what would such a tourist learn from the community? Would she toss aside her stubborn, contrarian individualism and embrace the communitarian ethos of an efficient and cosmopolitan society? Would something about her sense of independence, in fact, assist in the communitarian German project? It’s Jasmine’s firm but humanitarian sense of order and discipline that liberates the people of the Bagdad Cafe from their own ennui and frustration. Her Germanness allows the Americans to be all the more American: happy, successful, idiosyncratic, fun-loving, harmonious. Could Americanness allow a German community to become more German?
Who knows what anyone seeing Bagdad Cafe at the Vogue thought about any of this. Socio-cultural considerations, aside, there was such a rich vein of this kind of movie in the 1980s, as I noted before. My guess is that, compared to other charming culture-clash character studies like Local Hero or Down by Law, Bagdad Cafe got lost in the shuffle. The fact that any small, independent movie was able to find any kind of audience nationally when in many cases it showed in a city for just a single week is sort of miraculous.

[John K. Ross] Short Circuit: A roundup of recent federal court decisions
Please enjoy the latest edition of Short Circuit, a weekly feature from the Institute for Justice.
A central tenet of property rights is that owners can exclude others from their property; what's mine is mine, not yours. So, urges an IJ amicus brief, the Supreme Court should review a California court of appeals decision forbidding an owner from excluding the public from his beachfront property (unless he obtains a "development" permit) and requiring him to run an unprofitable business on it.
Then-Secretary of State allegedly tells parents of Americans who died in Benghazi terrorist attack that amateur filmmaker is to blame, a falsehood. Four years later, the parents sue the Secretary alleging that terrorists accessed her private email server and used its contents to carry out the attack. D.C. Circuit: Can't sue over that yet; need to exhaust administrative remedies first.
Then-teen supplies gun, sits in passenger seat of getaway car outside robbery-turned-murder at Philadelphia jewelry store in 1990. Jury: Which is first-degree murder. Third Circuit: New trial. Seems likely that, because of bad instructions, the jury incorrectly attributed the shooter's intent to kill to the teen.
After the arrival of Uber, Philadelphia cab company earnings decrease 30 percent, the value of cab licenses drops 85 percent. Can cab companies sue Uber for attempting to monopolize the industry? That would be no fare, says the Third Circuit; the companies "have no right to exclude competitors from the taxicab market."
In 2004, upturned anchor embedded in Delaware River riverbed punctures single-hulled oil tanker, spilling 264,000 gallons of crude, a mere 900 feet from its destination after a 1,900-mile journey. (Single-hulled tankers are now banned from WOTUS.) Cleanup is successful, costs $143 million. Who pays? The shipping company and the gov't can recover much of their cleanup costs from the oil company, says the Third Circuit.
Maryland transit cop suspects he's found a stolen vehicle; he alerts the vehicle's owner, who gets a ride to the scene. Uh oh! The officer inquires whether the men in the car are in the country legally. They aren't. Suppress the ride giver's confession? No need, says the Fourth Circuit.
Lower court slaps attorney with $175k in sanctions, refers issue for possible disbarment for "habitual, bad faith misconduct." Wowza! Among other things, the attorney filed police report accusing opposing counsel of stalking and making terroristic threats, submitted over 100 court documents with ad hominem attacks (and often false statements) on opposing counsel, filed slander suit against opposing counsel's legal assistant, fabricated out of whole cloth an email to be used as evidence and lied to the court about doing so. Fifth Circuit: Affirmed.
Sexagenarian dies of West Nile encephalitis after bite from infected mosquito. Did he die an accidental death (for which his family gets an insurance payout) or of a disease (no payout)? Fifth Circuit: A jury could conclude the bite was an unforeseen accident and that his age, morbid obesity, diabetes, and hypertension did not contribute to his death. Case should not have been dismissed. Dissent: West Nile encephalitis is a disease.
At 2006 traffic stop, St. Tammany Parish, La. officers allegedly beat handcuffed suspect unconscious; he needs several facial reconstruction surgeries. His federal excessive force suit is stayed while he's tried in state court for felony aggravated flight. After a quick deliberation, he's acquitted in 2012, but prosecutors pursue additional charges based on the same 2006 incident. He declines to turn himself in, has been in the wind since 2013. Fifth Circuit: No need to enjoin the state's continued effort to try him.
Texas home health company seeks hearing to dispute accusation that it has overbilled Medicare. Gov't: Neat! But the backlog for a hearing is up to five years. In the meantime, pay $7.6 million. Company: That will force us into bankruptcy. Fifth Circuit: Which is a due process violation.
Allegation: Pretrial detainee's foot gets infected, stinks foully, turns black; he can't walk. Rapides Parish, La. jail staff decline to provide care. Ultimately, his toe must be amputated; his kidneys fail in hospital; he needs dialysis. District court: The jail's paramedics were practicing outside the scope of their training without physician supervision; the detainee can sue the sheriff for that. Fifth Circuit: Nope. Qualified immunity.
Distressed to see that a case has languished for nine years, Fifth Circuit attempts to goose district court judge into action. Judge responds that case will be resolved "soon." Fifth Circuit: Not good enough—MANDAMUS!
Allegation: Woman arrested at family BBQ sets seatbelt on fire, burns herself in attempt to escape squad car. Wayne County, Mich. jail staff do not abide by hospital's wound care instructions or provide her psychiatric medication. She ultimately needs a skin graft. Sixth Circuit: She can sue several staff.
Michigan state police sergeant alleges coworker sexually assaulted, harassed her; investigations result in no action. Boss demotes her, transfers her far from home and family. Illegal retaliation? Sixth Circuit (2014): District court shouldn't have excluded evidence of the demotion, among other things. Sixth Circuit (2016): No need to revisit $350k award in her favor. (Also, counsel should be careful not to make a series of misstatements to the court, particularly if all cut in favor of one's client.)
Allegation: Media, interested citizens convene impromptu press conference outside courtroom at criminal trial of former Hamilton County, Ohio judge. Police demand that two individuals, both African-American, stop filming and search their recording devices. They're handcuffed, arrested, and bogus charges are filed against them. One loses her job because of the incident. Police do not interfere with the other press conferees, who are white. Sixth Circuit: No qualified immunity.
Prior to indictment, Memphis robbery suspect is offered plea deal. Yikes! It expires, and he ultimately gets a sentence 10 years longer than what had been on offer. He says his attorney failed to relay the plea offer, thereby violating his Sixth Amendment right to effective counsel. Sixth Circuit (sitting en banc): There is no such right prior to indictment. Concurrence (dubitante): The Founders would disagree; the Supreme Court should reconsider its precedent here.
Police called to home of suicidal Ankeny, Iowa woman say she waved gun around, gave them thousand-yard stare. They shoot her dead. Excessive force? Eighth Circuit: Qualified immunity.
Police called to home of schizophrenic Jasper County, Mo. man place him in "modified bent arm lock" after he does not submit to cuffing. The man moves suddenly, snapping his own arm. He continues to resist, however, so police use nunchucks to pry, restrain his other arm and tase him repeatedly. Excessive force? Eighth Circuit: Qualified immunity.
DEA agents interview pilot in the pay of a pair of Paraguayans. No drugs found; he's not arrested. But wait! His plane's auxiliary fuel system (powered by cigarette lighter and secured to plane's wing by duct tape) is not FAA compliant. Eleventh Circuit: Which is illegal. (He gets a year's probation and a $100 fine.)
And in en banc news, the Fifth Circuit (over six dissents) will not reconsider its ruling that a pretrial detainee held (on bogus charges) for 96 days before seeing a judge can sue Choctaw County, Miss. sheriff. (We discussed the case on the podcast.)
Friends, Little Pink House, a major motion picture that tells the story of IJ client Susette Kelo's Supreme Court showdown over the abuse of eminent domain, will be screened in select theaters across the nation starting April 20. The film stars two-time Academy Award nominee Catherine Keener and Emmy nominee Jeanne Tripplehorn—and also features an original song by rock legend David Crosby. Exclusive: the country, in Americaare rampant, the first Research of its kind in modern times Reveals
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/636f459ad7f450f40be1371e0db4d6bf/0b03f72737f13711-64/s540x810/975220c117a81d842b9c7acc91197eee9ef0fbbf.jpg)
Children playing feet away from open pools of raw sewage; drinking water pumped together with cracked pipes of untreated waste; human faeces flushed back into kitchen tubs and sinks whenever the drains come; people testing positive for hookworm, an intestinal parasite that thrives on extreme poverty.
These are the findings of a new research into endemic tropical diseases, not at all places usually associated with them in the developing world of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, but in a corner of the richest nation on earth: Alabama.
Scientists in Houston, Texas, have raised the lid on one of America's darkest and deepest secrets: that concealed beneath fabulous wealth, the US tolerates poverty-related disease at rates comparable to the planet's poorest countries. Over one in three individuals tested positive for traces a parasite which was believed to have been eradicated from the US decades ago, of hookworm.
The long-awaited findings, revealed by the Guardian for the very first time, are a wake-up call to the world's sole superpower because it grapples with growing inequality. Donald Trump has promised to "Make America Great Again" and handle the nation's crumbling infrastructure, but he has said very little about enduring chronic poverty, especially in the southern countries.
The study, the first of its kind in modern times, was carried out by the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in conjunction with Alabama Center for Rural Enterprise (ACRE), a nonprofit group seeking to deal with root causes of poverty. In a poll of people living in Lowndes County, an area with a long history of racial discrimination and inequality, it found that 34% tested positive for genetic traces of Necator americanus.
Lowndes
The parasite known as hookworm, enters the body through the skin through the soles of feet, and travels around the body until it attaches. Over years or months it causes weight loss and anemia, iron deficiency, fatigue and diminished mental function, especially in children, helping to trap them.
Hookworm was uncontrolled in the south of the US in the earlier 20th century, helping to make the stereotype of the lazy and lethargic redneck and sapping the power and educational accomplishments of both black and white kids. As public health enhanced, most experts assumed it had disappeared entirely by the 1980s.
But the new study shows that hookworm not only survives lacking even basic sanitation, but does this on a scale that is breathtaking. None of the people had travelled outside the united states, yet as was inadequate waste treatment parasite vulnerability was found to be widespread.
The peer-reviewed research paper, published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, concentrates on Lowndes County, Alabama -- the home condition of the US attorney general, Jeff Sessions, plus a landmark place in the background of the nation's civil rights movement. "Bloody Lowndes", the region was known as in reference to the violent response of white residents towards efforts to reverse racial segregation in the 1950s.
It was through this county which Martin Luther King led marchers from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 in search of voting rights for black citizens, More than half a century afterwards, King's dream of what he called the "dignity of equality" remains elusive for many of the 11,000 residents of Lowndes County, 74% of whom are African American.

The average income is only $18,046 (#13,850) annually, and almost a third of the population live below the official US poverty line. The most basic waste disposal infrastructure is.
Some 73 percent of residents included in the Baylor survey reported that they were exposed to sewage washing back as a result of faulty septic tanks or waste pipes.
The Baylor research was inspired by Catherine Flowers, ACRE's founder, who invited the Houston scientists to perform the review afterwards she became concerned about the health consequences of having so many open sewers in her home county. "Hookworm is a 19th-century disease that should by now have been addressed, however we're still fighting with it in the USA in the 21st century," she explained.
"Our billionaire philanthropists like Bill Gates fund water treatment around the world, but they don't fund it here in the US because no one acknowledges that this amount of poverty is present in the richest nation on the planet."
Flowers took witness the Guardian on a tour of Lowndes County the states in. 1 stop was out Fort Deposit that illustrated the catastrophe in a group of mobile homes.
An eight-year-old child was sitting on the back of one of the trailers. Below him a pipe ran from his home, into a copse of pine and sweet gum trees, and across the yard only a couple feet away from a basketball hoop.
The color of petroleum was cracked in several places and ceased just inside the copse dripping ooze. Above the sewage pool, a pipe ran up to the home, which turned out to be the main channel.
The sewer that was open was festooned with mosquitoes, and a very long cordon of ants could be seen trailing along the waste pipe. In the close of the pool nearest the home the fluid that was treacly was glistening in the dappled sunlight -- a closer look revealed that it was really moving, its effluence heaving and churning with tens of thousands of worms.

Ruby Dee Rudolph, 66, noticed her septic tank was gradually sinking unevenly into the ground. Photograph: Bob Miller for the Guardian
"Here is the definition of 'Make America Great Again'," explained Aaron Thigpen, 29, a community activist who assisted with the hookworm research. "Here is the reality of how people are being forced to live."
Thigpen's cousins live in the trailer park, and he has talked about the perils of dumping it off and piping sewage from their homes. "They're disgusted about it, they are sick and tired of living like this, but there is no public help for them here and if you're earning $700 a month there is no way you're able to afford your own private sanitation."
He added that people were scared to report the issues, given the spate of offender prosecutions which were introduced by Alabama state between 2002 and 2008 against residents who were open-piping sewage from their homes, unable to afford appropriate treatment systems. For neglecting to purchase a tank than her entire income, one grandma was detained within a weekend.
"People are fearful. They don't want to speak out as they are worried the health department will come across and cause difficulty," Thigpen said.
The challenge to places like Lowndes County is to not revive public infrastructure, because there's absolutely no infrastructure here to begin with as Trump has promised. Flowers estimates that any sewerage system uncovers 80 percent of the county, and in its absence people are anticipated -- and sometimes legally forced -- to supply their own.
Even where individuals can afford up to put in a septic tank the terrain is contrary to them. Lowndes County is situated inside the "Black Belt", the southern sweep of loamy soil that's well suited to growing cotton and as a result spawned a great number of plantations, each worked with a large enslaved inhabitants.
The same thing that made the land great for cotton -- its possessions -- also makes it a danger to the tens of thousands of African Americans who still live on it now. When the rains come, the soil becomes overwhelming waste systems saturated and offering a breeding ground for hookworm.
Ruby Rudolph lives beside the main Selma to Montgomery street where King led the demonstration walk. There's a history placard to mark the spot where Rosie Steele, her grandma, ran the tired marchers a campsite.
The campsite was cleared and after they moved on, Rudolph said, her grandma's grocery shop was set on fire in an arson attack. She was 13 at the time, and can remember the flames.
Rudolph, now 66, has her own septic tank in the back of her property, which she reveals us in the sweltering 41C (105F) heating system. But it doesn't function properly and when it rains the tank spills over, spreading waste all around the yard. "That is better than when it melts into the home, and I have had that also," she explained.
She has been told a replacement system will cost. Her finances are run through by her: she gets up to perform an early change at a Mapco convenience shop, which brings in less than $1,200 a month. When it is hot and there is the power bill that may be more than $ 300 a month from this sum she must pay $ 611 for her mortgage and the air conditioning is busy. There's not a lot left to put toward a brand new tank.

Perman Hardy, 58, stands with her grandson Carlos near the pipes that carry sewage from a relative's nearby trailer house into the woods, approximately 30ft from the back door. Photograph: Bob Miller for the Guardian
Perman Hardy, 58, lives in nearby Tyler in a selection of seven single-storey homes all inhabited by members of her extended family. Only two of them have septic tanks, the remainder creeks and only pipe waste in the woods.
Hardy is just one of the lucky ones with a remedy system of her own, but it is often overwhelmed with faeces in the drains. That the stench was so poor while it was professionally cleaned she had to vacate the house for two weeks over Christmas.
Hardy has traced her family back to slaves. The street that results in the old plantation from her residence is still called for this day by white neighbors "Nigger Foot Road", she said, though she and other African Americans call it Collerine Cutoff Road.
As a young child, Hardy worked after school and, conscious of her family's slave history and that in the cotton fields, she is determined to see a much better future for her grandchildren. "I don't want the exact same for my boys. But it's still a battle. It's the 21st century and we shouldn't be fighting like we still are today."
The hardship faced by fellow and Hardy, Rudolph inhabitants of Lowndes County is reflected in the glaring Journal of 34% testing positive for hookworm of the Baylor study. The sample size was low -- 67 people participated giving stool samples, all of whom were African American -- but the results are so crude that the Houston scientists want to conduct a survey that is larger throughout the region.
"We now must find how widespread hookworm is over the united states," explained Dr Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, who led the research team along with Rojelio Mejia. Hotez, who has estimated that as many as 12 million Americans might be affected by neglected tropical diseases in poor areas of the south and midwest, told the Guardian the results were a wake-up call for the nation.
"This is the inconvenient fact that nobody in America wants to talk about," he explained. "These people live in the southern United States, and nobody appears to care; they are bad, and nobody appears to care; and more often than not they are people of colour, and nobody appears to care."
