While the part of interspecies communication is largely exaggerated here (there was only one sloth involved and he did not respond to the dolphins, just check the news articles), this is a very nice example of how zoos work to provide enrichment for the animals in their care. And the dolphins DO look interested in their new friend, that is awesome 😃
Tumblr media
[image ID: Text reading Texas State Aquarium staff stated that the animals have been getting a little restless. One of the employees had an idea to let some of the land animals spend time with some of the sea animals, and it has worked out brilliantly.
Putting the sloths near the dolphins was the biggest surprise of all. The dolphins are absolutely delighted with the sloths, and the sloths, normally very quiet animals, have been squeaking replies back to the dolphins for hours at a time. Who would have guessed these two species would be such a great match?
There is a photo of two dolphins in a large pool, their heads peeking out above the water to look at a brown sloth, who is hanging on a branch. End ID]

thinking about 2015 buck and 2015 eddie meeting but from maddie's perspective. postcards from all over the states until eventually they keep coming from el paso, texas. buck writing about how he's started bartending again, and how the people there are awesome, and he's met this great guy with the cutest kid. then a few months later, still in el paso, a year, two years, still in el paso; buck starts running out of different post cards and starts sending them from novelty places- the zoo, aquariums, amusement parks. all this time until "Eddie and Chris are moving to LA, so I'm going with them! I really missed the ocean. Can't wait!" then, one day, maddie escaping across the country, showing up on the doorstep of a house in LA, and the door opening to a man she's never seen before but who lets her in with concern immediately, like he knows her. and. oh. she thinks. eddie. because in a way she knows him too.

Photos from my last trip to Corpus Christi this past weekend. I included the Lexington at night, where they light it up blue to mimic its nickname the blue ghost. (She’s normally dark grey in daytime, and isn’t painted in WWII blue camo like the Battleship Texas Is)
Most of these are from the Texas State aquarium, and to clarify on all these animals, they are ones who were rescues but injured to the point that it is safer for them to stay here than go back to the ocean. What’s the dolphin show are some of the training they do for dolphins that can be rehabilitated and taken back to the sea.
The aquarium is very particular about this, especially as it is a rescue as well. All the sea turtles to my understanding our permanent residence due to air bubbles in their shells consistent beaching themselves or a missing flipper.
I have a photo with three of them stacked on top of each other because they thought it was feeding time, but I decided the two was easier to see them. That particular photo the small turtle on right has an air bubble so he can’t quite as low.
They recently opened up a rescue specific center, which is an extension of what they currently had. It was open, but Mom and I had to go back home because I had to go back to West Texas the next day.
The sailboat and Marina shot at sunrise are from one of the hotels that you still can go out on the balcony and take photos. Is the most sailboats I’ve ever gotten to see but this has been the calmest the Gulf has been in a while.
And that’s what I did on my first break in two months where I wasn’t going only to three cities every single day.

So I had my first heart attack of the summer.
For those who don't know I am seriously afraid of sharks, I'm terrified of them.
Can't watch anything with sharks, whether it's a movie, documentary, anything. I can't even go to the Texas State Aquarium without wanting to faint because I have a fear of aquariums too.
Saw a commercial for Shark Week.
All I ask is if you do post anything with sharks to please tag it. I seriously hate this event to the point I usually end up avoiding tv and some streaming apps because of the documentaries they'll have posted on the main page of sharks.
So please, please tag.

As reports of other incidents are beginning to come in, I thought I’d make a thread on all the crazy break-ins going on in the zoo world since the beginning of 2023.
Tumblr media
On January 13th, Dallas Zoo closed due to a loose clouded leopard. Within hours she was discovered close to her home and safely returned to her enclosure with her sister, who had not left. Her wire mesh fence was discovered to have been intentionally cut open.
Tumblr media
The next day, January 14th, it was announced that another cut had been discovered in the Dallas Zoo’s spectacled langur exhibit. However, the monkeys did not leave their enclosure and all were reportedly accounted for and uninjured.
Tumblr media
On January 22nd, a highly endangered lappet-faced vulture at the Dallas Zoo was found dead in his enclosure with a “suspicious wound.” The wound appeared to be unnatural and is suspected of being a stab wound.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On January 29th keepers at Zoosiana discovered that 12 of their squirrel monkeys were stolen in the night. The remaining monkeys were uninjured but stressed.
Tumblr media
On January 30th, attention was back on the Dallas Zoo as it reported that two of its emperor tamarins were missing after their enclosure had been cut into. As Dallas was in the middle of a freeze, it was doubtful the monkeys would have left their heated enclosure willingly. They were believed to have been taken.
Tumblr media
On January 31st, Dallas police released photos and a video of a person of interest who may be connected to the theft of the tamarins.
Later that day, the tamarins were found in an abandoned home following a tip from the owners of the neighboring church. The monkeys were in a closet filled with bird feces and moldy clothes. Police also found cats, cat feces, pigeons, and a water jug containing dead fish in the home.
The tamarins were reportedly very happy to return to their warm home, but had lost weight. The zoo currently has them in quarantine to get their weight back up and monitor them for any illnesses they could have caught from the other animals in the abandoned house.
On February 2nd, 24-year-old Davion Dwight Irvin was arrested after an employee of the Dallas World Aquarium recognized him from the “person of interest” photos. He was reportedly scoping out mesh enclosures at the aquarium and approached the employee to ask questions about the animals’ care.
Apparently there had been unreported thefts in early January of feeder fish and fish supplies as well as training supplies taken from the behind the scenes otter area at the Dallas Zoo.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, also on February 2nd, someone cut open the stainless steel mesh of the Central Park Zoo’s Eurasian eagle owl exhibit. The owl, Flaco, has been under zoo surveillance since he was located on the 3rd and the hope is to lure him back with food once he gets hungry. As of today, February 8th, he has not eaten or drank, as he does not know how to in the wild.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back to Texas, and despite zoos in the area doubling security, on February 6th keepers found a 4-inch cut in the Houston Zoo’s brown pelican enclosure. The birds are reportedly all accounted for and unharmed.
On February 7th, it was reported that Davion had not only confessed to stealing the Dallas Zoo’s monkeys, but also stated that, if released, he would go right back to stealing animals.
Davion confessed that he had attempted to take Nova, the clouded leopard, but he was only able to pet her before she climbed out of reach. He was also linked to cutting the langurs’ enclosure, but not charged since the langurs did not escape.
It was also revealed that Davion had been a person of interest after staff recognized the zoo regular as someone who often asked a lot of abnormal questions (such as how to shift the tamarins in and out of their various spaces) and had been previously been caught sneaking into staff only areas.
So far the vulture, Pin’s, death is still under investigation. Pin’s enclosure was on the other side of the zoo from the area Davion had been targeting.
As for Zoosiana’s squirrel monkeys, an arrest has been made in connection to the theft. 61-year-old Joseph Randell has been taken in for questioning. The 12 monkeys remain missing.
As it stands, we still have one dead vulture who’s killer may still be at large, 12 missing squirrel monkeys, and an owl in danger of starvation or injury in New York City.
I will reblog with updates to ongoing cases as they become available, or if more zoo sabotage happens (God forbid). Please feel free to correct me if I’ve gotten any dates or information wrong and I will edit or update this post.
(Also, I am on mobile and won’t be able to add a readmore until I can access a computer, sorry) Update: I was finally able to add a readmore and also turned all news links into hyperlinks.

With Apollo’s passing, I sincerely hope Nick isn’t housed alone again. He spent nine years by himself between Indy’s death in 2011 and Hemingway’s arrival in 2020 (I really don’t understand how that was allowed to happen, but Clearwater isn’t accredited, so I guess they got away with it).
CMA has already proven they’re willing to bend their “no boys and girls together” rule when they decided to move Rosie in with Rudy, but in my opinion, Nick should be transferred out to join a proper bachelor pod. It probably isn’t wise to bring in another companion for him until they get their situation under control.

Joe Quinn x Corpus Christi 🌊🏝️
Tumblr media
I was inspired by a Joe x color blue moodboard 💙 that I saw and had put my Texas spin on it. All the pics featured in each square are some of my fave spots in Corpus such as the iconic Selena statue, 🌹🤍, The Bay bridge which lights up at night and looks soo pretty, the Texas state aquarium, 🐬⛲️, the coffee mugg ⚡️🪄✨☕️ which for those aren’t familiar is a Harry Potter themed coffee place, which is soo cool in the inside 😁, Hester’s cafe, which the dishes are delish and are named after jazz musicians 🎶🥁🎺🎹, and the US Lexington ship 🛳️
I hope y’all like it as much as I enjoyed creating it 🤗
