What Comes Next - Teuvo Teräväinen
Summary: Teuvo and Y/n visit their newborn niece for the first time. As he watches Y/n with their niece, he finds himself mesmerized by her warmth and natural instinct. He comes to the realization that he is ready to start a family.
Words: 921

The anticipation was strong as Teuvo and Y/n pulled up to Y/n’s sister’s house. It was a sunny afternoon, the kind of day that felt perfect for family gatherings. Y/n had been excited to finally become an auntie for months, and today was the day she and Teuvo would finally meet the little one for the first time. He was excited, but also a little nervous. He always loved kids but had never been in many situations where he was around babies.
When they entered the house, Y/n’s sister greeted them warmly, her eyes immediately lighting up as she introduced them to her baby girl. Teuvo was a little awestruck as he looked down at the tiny bundle in Y/n’s sister’s arms, but the moment Y/n took the baby in her own arms, his heart melted.
Y/n’s voice, soft and soothing, made Teuvo smile. She cooed to the baby in a way that made the little girl’s eyes light up, her tiny hands reaching out to Y/n. The baby settled into her arms, comforted by her presence as she gently rocked her. Teuvo couldn’t help but watch, mesmerized by how natural Y/n seemed. The connection between them was immediate and deep. She was calm, composed, and full of warmth - everything Teuvo admired about her.
As they spent the afternoon together, Y/n and the baby formed an unspoken bond, and Teuvo found himself both in awe and a little surprised at how much his heart swelled at the sight. He had always known Y/n was loving and nurturing, but seeing her with a baby (their own niece making it even more exciting) brought out a side of her he hadn’t fully known. It was as if she was born to be a mother, and Teuvo couldn’t help but imagine her being that way with their own child one day.
Teuvo watched as Y/n held the baby with such care, expertly handling the little one’s small body and adjusting her to be more comfortable, all while continuing to talk to her softly. He noticed the way her face lit up when the baby giggled or wrapped her tiny hand around Y/n’s finger, and something shifted inside him. The desire to one day build a family with her felt so natural.
As the visit came to an end, Teuvo’s heart felt lighter, but also heavier in a way. They said their goodbyes, and Teuvo felt a strange mix of excitement and yearning as they walked out to the car. The image of Y/n holding their niece stayed with him, and as they drove home, the silence between them felt different. Teuvo kept replaying the afternoon in his mind, and it wasn’t long before he knew he needed to share his thoughts with her.
That evening, after a quiet dinner, they settled onto the couch together. Teuvo found himself nervously playing with his fingers, forcing himself to speak up. Y/n was curled up beside him, her eyes half-closed as she leaned into him, but he could tell her mind was somewhere else.
"You were amazing," Teuvo said, his voice quieter than usual. Y/n glanced up at him, giving him a soft smile. "It’s like you were born to do this."
Y/n laughed lightly, brushing a piece of hair behind her ear. "Well, she’s such an angel. It’s easy to be good with her." She shrugged, looking down at her hands, a slight blush creeping up her cheeks.
Teuvo’s gaze never left her. He was silent for a moment, gathering his thoughts. He reached for her hand, his thumb gently brushing over her skin. "No, it’s more than that," he said. "You were incredible with her, and I couldn’t help but think about us. About one day having a little one of our own."
Y/n froze for a second, her heart skipping a beat as she turned to look at him, searching his face for any sign of doubt. "Teuvo?" she asked, her voice soft but filled with curiosity.
Teuvo let out a quiet breath, his thumb still gently caressing her hand as he continued. "I’ve been thinking about it for a while now," he admitted, his voice steady but full of emotion. "I want to build a family with you. Watching you with her today made me realized that we’re ready. You’re so amazing with kids, and I just know we would make great parents."
Y/n felt a lump form in her throat as she processed his words. She didn’t expect this conversation, but now that it was happening, her heart filled with warmth. She loved Teuvo more than anything, and the thought of raising a family with him, growing their love into something even bigger, made her heart race.
"You really think so?" Y/n asked. She squeezed his hand gently, needing to feel his touch as she absorbed everything he was saying.
Teuvo nodded, his eyes full of certainty and affection. "I know so. You’re everything I’ve ever wanted, Y/n. And seeing you with her just made me realize how much I want to share that with you. So, whenever you’re ready."
Y/n’s heart fluttered, a mix of joy and excitement blooming inside her. She always imagined a future with Teuvo and hearing him speak about it so openly, made everything feel even more real. She smiled, squeezing his hand tighter. "I’ve always been ready for a future with you."
Teuvo pulled her closer, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips. "Then we’ll make it happen," he murmured, wrapping his arms around her.

player using nicknames in their dialogue over “y/n” (baby/sweetheart/love)
if an author has an old work they and other people love would love a revisit especially if a player has since been traded or injured or even retired love to see where old relationships have gone in a one shot
I would love to see fics break away from the mould of traditional romance novels! I'm not a fan of third act breakups or other unnecessary issues for the sake of plot, and I think there are a lot of ways to write a good story without those elements and would love to see the creativity that comes from exploring alternatives!!
Angst and make-ups that don’t end in sex. I like that there’s other ways to makeup. Also good communication!! As someone who has never been in a relationship, good communication is great for me to like start to understand what a healthy relationship could look like
would love to see more enemies to lovers without someone being embarrassed or humiliated so I guess more rivals to lovers where there's a mutual respect but you still don't like them until one key moment, friendship dynamics with the other players on the li team, moving to a new city and meeting the player by happenstance in like a grocery store or coffee shop, soc-med team x player, first person they meet outside their organization after being traded

sydney i see the lack of teuvo x reader as a crime and i was wondering if you could write a sort of friends to lovers where the reader comforts teuvo after the game against tampa and they kind of end up confessing their feelings to each other? <3
A/N: You are absolutely right, this is a crime. I apologize. Here is your request to make up for it. I hope you like it <3 (And in all seriousness though, I had such a blast writing this!! Friends to lovers is such a good trope 😌 I also had to watch the game highlights to get some of the information right and all I can say after that is pain)
Pairing: Teuvo Teravainen/Reader
Word Count: 4.5k
Warnings: Nothin' but fluff, a bit of cursing, and mildly suggestive content
Tumblr media
I'm okay in your arms:
Ooh, You winced as Tampa Bay scored their second goal of the night, Ross Colton firing a shot from the corner of Carolina’s zone and just managing to shoot it right past his glove. And despite your hope and pride for the Canes, for your best friend, with that scoring of the second goal you just knew this game was over.
“That one’s got to hurt,” One of the WAG’s commented from beside you with a wince that matched your frown, and the only thing you could do was nod in agreement.
Tuning out the rest of the game, you scanned the ice for your best friend, finding him and Sebastian on the bench stuck in deep, hasty conversation in what you could only assume was about trying to get those goals back. Both of them were covered in sweat - in fact the whole team was - hair dripping and cheeks flushed red, Teuvo especially looking very good from your viewpoint in a way you could only find endearing— and no, no, you were not going there right now.
In case it wasn’t obvious, you had a massive crush on your best friend; typical, you knew, though you knew from the start it would only be a matter of time before you fell for the blonde hockey player ever since you first met him.
Though despite the lingering tension that remained after your first initial meeting, you and Teuvo never crossed that line of friendship even after months of knowing each other, after weeks of you eventually realizing you were completely and utterly infatuated with the hockey player.
How could you not be? You could confidently say Teuvo - and just by association, Sebastian Aho too, as needy as he was- was one of your bestest friends, always willing to listen to you go on long rants about your day, and you in return comforting him after a loss with a warm dinner and cuddles on the couch to watch The Office on repeat. In fact, Teuvo’s apartment was practically your second home with how much time you spent there, watching his games on the television when he was on road trips or even just sleeping over because you felt like it.
Yeah, you had a massive crush on your best friend that would never see the light of day. No matter how much you just wanted to blurt it out when watching other girls crawl up all over him at bars when out celebrating a win, you couldn’t, because Teuvo just didn’t feel the same and you had to respect that, for the sake of your friendship. No matter what you felt for him, you would never let it jeopardize your relationship with your best friend.
When the horn sounded that signified the end of the game, a loss you knew would be haunting the boys for days, maybe even months after, you watched sadly as the team shuffled slowly into the locker rooms, looking just as dejected as you felt after watching Tampa Bay practically mop the floor with them.
Eventually moving to stand up with all of the girls beside you, you remained in the back of the crowd with a few of the younger girls as the security guards led you down to the locker rooms to wait for the players to come out.
“That was painful to watch,” You heard someone mumble from beside you, and you nodded in agreement as a few others began to chime in.
“There’s always next season, at least?”
“They’ll come back stronger from it. I know they will.”
The side conversations continued even when the doors opened and Jordan Staal led the team out with a somber smile, greeting his wife and kids with a big hug as the others followed. You stood on your tippy-toes against the wall, waiting for Teuvo to come out with a nervous bite of your lip. Even if they had won, you still would have ended up driving to his apartment with him, but now that they lost you weren’t really sure how the rest of the night was going to go.
Just as you were about to go join a conversation with a few other girls in conversation, the flashing of cameras that were only associated with reporters could be heard that were trying to exit the locker room, shouting various questions or statements as Sebastian stepped out looking just as stressed as he probably felt, Teuvo following closely behind with a hand running down his face.
Abandoning the group of friends, you quickly made your way over to the two boys who were being greeted by their other teammates and their partners.
“Hey,” You greeted your best friend quietly as you shuffled up next to Teuvo, flashing him your best grin of support. Based on the way his lips quirked up ever so slightly at your presence, you at least knew it wasn’t going to be a night of ranting or just plain silence.
Very quickly after that, Teuvo was saying goodbye to his teammates before linking his arm with yours and dragging Sebastian out of the locker rooms, avoiding the reporters and chanting fans from the parking lot as you made your way to his car. Like always, Teuvo had driven the both of you to the game since you didn’t want to drive in Raleigh traffic and Sebastian just didn’t feel like driving himself alone. It was a good system, one you especially didn’t want to fuck up on the off-chance you decided to confess the feelings you had buried underneath for the blonde.
Not tonight, You thought to yourself as both boys remained quiet and tense from the corner of your eyes. Normally they’d be talkative, Sebastian more so, going over the game play-by-play especially if they won— but tonight was nothing but silence, an air of sadness and disappointment filling the small atmosphere of the car until you arrived at the apartment complex.
“Remember we have those interviews tomorrow,” Sebastian managed to call out from behind you as Teuvo began to drag you to the elevator inside, you only managing to give back a hasty “I got it,” and “Bye Sepe!” before the doors closed with a thankful sigh from the man beside you.
You squinted up at Teuvo, nudging him playfully to give him any sense of normalcy before gesturing back towards the doors. “You would be lost without him always reminding you about these things, you know.”
Teuvo merely shrugged, huffing out a weak laugh as the elevator doors opened with a ding. “He understands if I’m short with him, especially after tonight.” And then things were quiet again as the both of you remembered why it was so tense to begin with— because the Tampa Bay Lightning had absolutely destroyed them on the ice, and everyone knew it.
You didn’t bother asking if he was okay when he unlocked his door and let the two of you in, and you didn’t ask either when he fell face-first onto his couch with you immediately turning on the lights to his kitchen. While you weren’t an expert at cooking, you were good enough to make a few simple meals which is what you had done prior to Teuvo taking you all to the game.
“Anything specific you want?” You called out from the kitchen, leaning over to try and peer into his refrigerator more - and really, you should probably help him organize his kitchen more, it was a mess - and only when you heard him mumble something faint from his living room did you turn around to hear him more.
“What did you say?” You peered over the counter to try and see him sprawled out over the couch, and you probably would have fallen over at his next response if you weren’t resting your arms on the granite surface.
“You. I want you-”
And… Wow— that… Sounded a lot more explicit than he was probably meaning it to be. If only the butterflies in your stomach would take the hint.
“-to turn off those lights and cuddle while we watch T.V.”
Yeah, that made much more sense, you told yourself with a strained sigh.
Shrugging, you merely huffed out a laugh before closing the fridge and turning off the kitchen lights, shrouding the entire apartment in darkness other than the twinkling through the windows. Shuffling over to where Teuvo was now on his back, you were just about to plop down next to him, but then - your heart couldn't take any more of this, really - suddenly you had a hand latching onto your wrist to drag you forward, causing you to trip over your own two feet and land right on top of Teuvo's chest.
"Was that necessary?" You scowled with little mirth, swatting at his arm when he only laughed and moved with you when you wiggled around to be pressed in-between the couch and Teuvo's side. Patting your chest with your hand, he let out a happy sigh as he gladly buried his head into the crook of your neck and his arms encircled your waist, tugging you close to the warmth of his body.
Now this, this you didn't mind, was your last thought before you rested your chin atop his head, this time taking the role of big spoon as he was practically cuddled on top of you, arms holding you so tight to him that you wouldn't be able to get up if you tried.
Not that you minded, though, you hummed as you turned on a random episode of The Office, resting both your hands on the back of Teuvo.
The television was merely background noise as you began to play with Teuvo's hair, playing with the soft strands and reveling in the gentle sighs he'd emit when you'd run a hand through his hair and massage at his neck.
"Thank you," Teuvo mumbled into your chest, head hidden from both you and the view of the television which you found ironic since he was the one who wanted to watch it in the first place. "Of course," you'd respond quietly, continuing your soothing motions for the boy on top of you.
You would have almost been worried for the hockey player if he wasn't always like this after every loss, though this time it seemed to be him needing more of someone to hold him rather than talk, which you were more than happy to do.
"Do you think we played good?" Came his weak voice muffled from the fabric of your shirt, and your heart practically broke at the frustration and sadness in his voice.
"I think you played as good as you could against a team that is 18 million dollars over their cap limit." You replied a bit too honestly, and while only getting a heavy sigh in response, you took no offense because the both of you knew it was not at you but rather the situation. Because really, despite what the Lightning did being really clever and strategic, you knew it brought nothing but dread and maybe even a bit of anger to your favorite team for having to play against them so soon.
"I think we could have done better." Came his next bitter response, though once again it held no malice, just defeat.
"That's what you say after every game. I don't think you could have played any better than you did against that team, Teukka. There's still always room for improvement, don't let tonight keep you from trying to remember that," You murmured, continuing your soothing strokes through his hair. And even though he was silent after that, you knew he heard and was taking your advice to heart like always.
Several minutes passed of quiet breathing and the soft hum of the television in the background, and it only took you a few minutes to realize Teuvo had most likely fallen asleep on your chest.
Attempting to move as little as possible, you gently scooted down the couch to where your body was no longer leaning against the pillows but rather on top of them, Teuvo's weight being a welcoming warmth rather than a suffocating furnace due to the coolness of his apartment.
Bringing your free hand up to brush against the soft skin of his face, you observed the way his eyelashes rested against his cheeks so delicately, lips pouted and forehead free of worry lines you had grown so used to seeing during the hockey season. He was beautiful, and it was yet another reason you had fallen so hard for him.
Sighing heavily, you bit your lip, conflicted, but thankful for the fact that he was asleep - or was he? - so he didn't have to see the way you contemplated spilling out your guts in the safety of his darkened apartment bathed in moonlight.
Your heart broke again for the defeat and uselessness you just knew he had to be feeling after the game tonight, even when asleep. None of the team had ever taken to losing well, especially Teuvo, and even when masking his hurt and disappointment with a stoic expression you just knew he had to be feeling his worst.
Maybe it was the fact you just knew he had to be hurting and hadn't had the chance to call his mom yet for her to tell him how much she still loved him that you decided to blurt out your feelings for the blonde in the dead of night, fingers playing with the lone pieces of hair that had fallen in his eyes.
"You drive me absolutely insane, you know," You mumbled into the silence of the night, playing with the strands of his hair with your hands. "And I can't do anything about it either, because I have to be there for you as a friend despite how much I want to be so much more than that.
"It's kind of sad, if you think about it. Well, either just sad or pathetic, or just both— I should have known it wasn't going to take me long to fall for you. Maybe I'm scared to say something because you're not just you, my best friend Teukka, but you're also Teuvo Teravainen, a star hockey player everyone has their eyes on.
"Or maybe I'm just a wimp, which I think is also pretty believable, too. Either way, Teuvo, I'm just a coward who's in love with you, and I don't know when I'll gather the courage to be able to tell you, if I ever do.
"Anyways, just… Thought you should know, I guess,” You mumbled quietly. “Even if you're asleep and I might not even remember this in the morning." And with that you shut your mouth, heaving a sigh that seemed to reverberate throughout your entire being before settling back, grabbing the blanket hanging atop the sofa and spreading it over the two of you.
And maybe if you'd paid attention a little more, watched for the subtle twitch of his eyes and the tightening of his arms around your waist when you'd first spoken, you'd have noticed the way a gentle smile had spread across your best friend's lips from where they'd been hidden against your chest, a smile so knowing yet mischievous.
And when you'd fully fallen asleep with the soft pillow behind your head and the comforting weight of Teuvo pressed on top of you, if you had paid attention to his tells just a little more, you would have stayed awake for the moment Teuvo carefully extracted himself from your hold, bundling you up in his blanket and switching your positions on the couch with this time you being cradled in his hold, head resting in the crook of his neck.
You'd have seen the way Teuvo pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead, whispering a soft "I love you" in the dead of night, scheming the moment you woke up so he could tell you.
Which was how you woke up that next morning, to being curled into Teuvo's couch with his way-too-comfortable blanket surrounding you, and you were pretty sure you resembled some sort of human cocoon.
Mind still fuzzy with sleep, you breathed in his scent you had grown accustomed to over the time you'd known him, burying your nose into the soft fabric without a second thought that friends didn't just casually inhale each other's scents.
But you and Teuvo weren't exactly the most typical of friends, either. You were secretly in love with him and sometimes Teuvo would say something that made you think he was flirting with you.
It was a weird dynamic, you knew.
You were eventually roused by the smell of pancakes, and by wiggling the blanket off of you to free your arms you groggily raised them above your head with a tired yawn, back cracking at the position you had slept in for most of the night.
The warm steam from a pan gathered your attention next, and you twisted around to face the kitchen where Teuvo was finishing a breakfast of nothing but sugar you were sure his nutritionist would have him murdered for.
Rolling up to your feet, you folded the blanket back up and placed it back in its original spot on the couch before making your way to the kitchen, hopping up onto a barstool to rest against the island and watch your best friend cook.
"Are you supposed to be eating that?" Were your first words of the day, and you laughed when Teuvo jumped in surprise, whipping around to face you with wide eyes.
"Probably not." Eventually came his honest response with an unbothered shrug, and he didn't even have the decency to look guilty about it, either. "But I think I deserve it after last night." And then he was frowning again, sinking into his thoughts despite having you as a distraction.
Attempting to hold any sense of normalcy for your friend, you rolled your eyes playfully and rested your chin in your hand to retort, "You'll drive both me and your nutritionist absolutely—"
And like almost coming straight out of a novel, Teuvo was suddenly shaking himself out of his head, interrupting you, and turning around to face you with such a mischievous grin it immediately made you suspicious.
"-insane?" He finished off. And normally you'd have brushed it off, ignored the way he was sometimes able to read your mind, but no, why was this giving you a sense of sudden déjà vu, and why in the hell was Teuvo smiling like that? A smile so wide and knowing yet nervous and—
Oh.
Oh.
You were suddenly speechless, smile dropping to be replaced with a gaping mouth as you struggled to find the words to respond.
Had he…? No! He was asleep! Wasn't he?
You remained frozen in your spot as Teuvo approached you, coming to stand in front of you in nothing but a loose t-shirt that did nothing to hide his muscles and an old pair of shorts, mind you.
"You—" You started, but Teuvo shook his head quickly before interrupting.
"That's what you said last night, right? That- that I drive you insane?"
And Teuvo looked so serious and hopeful all at once, blue eyes wide and running over every inch of your face which was currently frozen in shock. When you merely nodded, he was suddenly taking hold of your hands and bringing you in close.
"And— you were being honest?"
"I really don't want to talk about this right now—" You rushed out, eyes wide and cheeks on fire as you quickly tried to pull away because suddenly it was too much all at once, and you really didn't want to deal with his rejection right now.
"No, we're talking about this-"
"Teukka I really don't need to hear you say you don't feel the same, I get it, just at least let me go back home so I can suffer in peace—"
"But-" He tried interrupting, but you were already on a roll and couldn't stop.
"I shouldn't have even said anything," You moaned in what sounded like pain, head collapsing to press against the countertop so you wouldn't have to meet his eyes; but maybe if you did you would have seen the way he was biting his lip in frustration, wanting to shut you up so you could just let him speak. "Just, let's just pretend I never even said anything-" because the last thing you wanted to do was talk about your feelings that Teuvo didn't reciprocate. You wanted to run away, to avoid him, even if that was the wrong thing to do. Because you did understand, you were just his friend, and—
"Jesus christ, I love you, okay?"
You froze, your next words on the very tip of your tongue but wouldn't come out no matter how hard you tried— because he what?
"You-"
"I. Love. You." Interrupting once more, Teuvo leaned in even closer, rounding the counter to stand directly in front of you on the barstool.
"You don't have to-" you whispered weakly, and really you didn't know why you were trying to deflect his feelings, but you just knew you didn't want him to confess anything in case he just felt bad.
"You're overthinking this." Teuvo murmured quietly, looking so earnest with those blue eyes of his that were swimming with some emotion you thought you might have recognized.
"If you had listened to me before," Teuvo started once he was sure you weren't going to interrupt again, to try to avoid whatever he was saying. "You would have heard me say that I wasn't completely asleep last night, and that I really wanted to interrupt you and tell you that I had fallen in love with you too.
"You're just too stubborn," He huffed with a mildly amused grin, bringing a hand up to brush away a strand of hair that had fallen from your ponytail. "And you don't like to listen when it means you have to be, what's the word- scared? Too 'out there'?"
"Vulnerable?" you filled in the word for him sheepishly without a second thought.
"Vulnerable." He agreed with a determined nod of his head, shuffling closer to you.
"And you would know how whenever you do that thing with your lips when you're mad, that it drives me crazy because all I want to do is kiss you, but I can't because I can never figure out if you liked me too or if you were just being nice."
With every word that was escaping his lips, Teuvo was coming closer and closer, hands getting bolder and bolder as they moved from your hands to have one rest on your knee and the other reaching up to take ahold of your waist, tugging you forward with only a squeak of weak protest from you.
"And you'd know that I had stopped thinking of you as just my friend the moment you first showed up at my door with a box of lasagna after we lost that one game to the Stars without me having to call or text you. You just," Teuvo looked down for a moment, licking his lips in contemplative silence before meeting your eyes again. "You cared without me having to ask, and that was the moment I knew I wanted you in my life as more than just this.” Teuvo finished, and you were stuck frozen under the intensity of his stare as it penetrated through your entire being, and who were you to continue denying him?
“So you love me then?” Were your next words, spoken with a cheeky smile that was an attempt at hiding the way your heart was pounding outside your chest and the tomato-red flush of your cheeks. Merely rolling his eyes, Teuvo responded with a grumble that sounded vaguely like “shut up” before fully tugging you forward, causing your hands to fall against his chest to hold yourself up as you were now on the very edge of the barstool.
“Can I kiss you?” Asked Teuvo once he had you in his arms, the heavy weight a welcome warmth against your body as he brought a hand up to cup your cheek. And you wouldn’t have been able to say no even if you wanted to, not with the way he was looking at you like he wanted to devour you.
You nodded, a breathless “yes” escaping you before Teuvo was leaning forward and pressing his lips against yours, and the electrifying sparks that went off immediately at the contact were almost cliche as you kissed him back, starting slowly before it quickly turned passionate and then your hands were curling into the hair at the nape of his neck, eyes fluttering at the way he was now moving down to kiss your jaw, teeth gently nipping at the skin that left you humming and gasping out at the pleasure his intimate touch brought you, and— wait wait wait,
Suddenly you were pulling away with a breathless pant, Tevuo letting out a disgruntled whine as you pressed your hands to his shoulders to keep him at bay. “Wait, are—” You swallowed, trying to catch your breath despite the passion still burning through your veins. “Are you okay? To- to be doing this? From last night?”
Teuvo looked both flabbergasted and amused at your blabbering, mouth agape as he observed you with undulated confusion.
“Out of everything we just talked about and did you’re worried about me?” Teuvo asked with wide eyes full of both adoration and amusement, merely shaking his head with a laugh as he rubbed gentle circles on the embarrassed blush blooming across your cheeks with his fingers.
“It was a hard loss for you guys,” You tried defending yourself with a mumble, huffing when Teuvo just laughed, the loss against Tampa Bay temporarily banished from his mind now that he finally had you.
“You’re cute,” Said Teuvo with a goofy grin once he caught his breath, and then he was gently grabbing you by the waist again to bring you in closer, beginning to press tiny butterfly kisses against your neck as you wrapped your arms around his middle.
“Only for you,” You grinned, kissing his cheek when he eventually let you go to grab his phone that had suddenly began to buzz from the counter.
As Teuvo answered the phone with a vaguely irritated “what, Sepe?”, you couldn't help but laugh to yourself, watching the furrow of his brow as he talked to his teammate and the curse that left his mouth once he realized the time.
“I have to get to the arena for those interviews, or whatever they are,” Said your boyfriend - maybe? - as he rushed around to turn off the stove, handing you the plate of pancakes he had prepared.
And as Teuvo was just about to exit his apartment, you suddenly jumped up from your seat and grabbed his wrist, spinning the larger man around so you could press a sweet kiss to his lips.
“I love you,” You murmured, grinning when the tension left his shoulders as he heard your voice and kissed you back.
“I love you too.” With a gentle kiss to your cheek, Teuvo was waving goodbye as he hurried off down the hallway, leaving you not only just breathless, but so, so in love.

i need a lover not a friend with teuvo plz ❤️
pairing: teuvo teravainen
warnings: mention of a shitty ex, mentions of sex (nothing explicit though)
word count: 1k
i need a lover, not a friend
You have a lot of friends, maybe even an overabundance of friends depending on who you asked. There are casual friends who you don’t think about when they’re not in front of you, friends you would ask to help you move, friends you would ask to help you bury a body, friends who secretly want to fuck you. There’s your best friend Abby and your long distance best friend Annie and all the other people who love you.
Then there’s Teuvo.
It had been an accident that you’d met at all. You’d been working in the emergency room of Duke Raleigh after having followed your long term boyfriend to North Carolina. Prior to the move, you’d not really cared too much about the Hurricanes, but they were the local team and the only team whose games were featured on the local channels, and so they had quickly risen to become one of your favorite teams. That first year in North Carolina, sometimes it felt like the Canes were the only good in your life as your relationship fell apart.
One might assume you’d met while working a shift at the hospital, but you’d actually met at a mediterranean restaurant when he’d nearly walked off with your order. One thing led to another led to you leaving with his number in your phone. Had you been single, you sometimes think that things would have turned out completely different.
The boyfriend hadn’t lasted, but the Canes had and certainly Teuvo did too. He went from a would-be food thief turned casual acquaintance into someone you genuinely enjoyed being around. Your friend groups had blended together almost seamlessly and your coworker Kylie had actually ended up hitting it off pretty well with Teuvo’s best friend on the team only further cementing the ties between you.
And then a year and two months into knowing Teuvo, it happened. What had started as a lowkey celebration of the boys’ latest win had quickly turned into something a little more rowdy once the tequila shots had been brought out. You weren’t drunk by any means, still totally in control of yourself but you were tipsy enough that your inhibitions had been lowered. Much like your initial meeting, one thing led to another, except this time the outcome was you, sneaking out of his bed early in the morning.
What is it they say? Once may be a mistake, twice is a decision, and three times is a habit? And it really wouldn’t be a problem except you’re not entirely sure where you stand. He flips and flops between devoted lover and casual friend so easily, you could almost be convinced that you’d never slept together at all. But the memory of what it’s like to be touched by him isn’t easily overwritten.
Above it all, things never feel weird, which had been your major fear and predominant reason for sneaking out the first time you’d slept together. And maybe that was the clear separation Teuvo was able to have between being your friend and being a guy you had sex with.
You’re not quite so good at it, pining written all over your face. Your friends don’t know, though. Only Kylie, and by extension Sebastian. You’re not sure if it was Ky or Teuvo that spilled it, but you’re certain he knows all the same.
The friend in friends with benefits is never more appreciated or needed than when you’ve had a bad day. It’s early evening and you’re exhausted after a twelve hour shift. Instead of driving home to your warm and familiar bed, you find yourself driving to Teuvo’s condo instead. Despite not even bothering to send him a courtesy text, he buzzes you up after the first few rings and rips the door open before you’ve even reached it. You don’t have to say a thing, the dried up tears at your waterline and the smudged mascara say it all. The giant hug you find yourself wrapped in has damn near magical properties if you’re being honest.
After eating takeout from your favorite mediterranean restaurant - the very same restaurant that you’d met in - you curl up on the couch between his legs with your head on his chest. The position is familiar, but you’re focused on the way your body fits in so perfectly next to his own, and the way it feels pressed against him.
You’re upset, and you still haven’t really spoken a word yet, but you decide to let your lips do the talking as you begin to press gentle kisses to his jawline. It’s a bit confusing and a lot heartbreaking when he pulls away from you. You’re not deterred though, an additional few minutes pass while you pretend to focus on the movie and not your friend and sometimes lover before you’re at it again, sliding your hand up his chest. He grips your wrist and moves your hand back to your own body and the simple action has your chest aching.
“Why don’t you want me?” slips out before you can really stop it. It’s a bit of a cringe moment but he only furrows his eyebrows in confusion.
“It’s not that I don’t want you... You’re upset,” he explains, and you just roll your eyes.
“And I know just the thing to make me feel better,” you insist, shifting again.
He pulls away yet again. “I’m just trying to be a good friend!”
“I need a lover, not a friend, Teuvo. I have enough friends!” It’s a silly thing to say, and you’re not even sure if you mean it, but it has the unintended, yet very welcome, side effect of darkening his expression. “I don’t want to be just your friend!”
There’s silence and you worry you’ve really done it this time. Your gaze is focused on the tiny logo stitched onto his sleeve, you’re unable to meet his gaze until he gently lifts your chin. “I don’t want to be just friends either.”
It’s a long buried secret come to light, a time capsule unearthed from the dirt. It’s the press of his lips and the flex of his hips and it’s all yours.
After all, what is a good lover if not a friend first?

svech: a very serious and responsible primer
ok @totally-necessary and @needsmore, i am gonna write you an andrei svechnikov primer and i am going to do my best to produce a work of responsible well-sourced expository prose instead of an embarrassing thirsty disaster like the rest of my andrei svechnikov blogging.
here is my introductory paragraph:
Tumblr media
wait, no, give me another shot. i swear i can actually do this. here is my introductory paragraph:
Tumblr media
HOW CAN I NOT LOVE THIS GOOD-NATURED FEARLESS JOYFUL SHOULDER-FRECKLED SEX KITTEN????? HOW CAN I DO ANYTHING BUT CRY ALL THE TIME?????
.......ok. sorry. let me try it again. i’ll do it right this time, i promise. here is my introductory paragraph:
once upon a time in siberia, two-year-old andrei svechnikov put on skates for the first time and cried because he couldn’t follow his big brother evgeny onto the ice. eventually evgeny’s coach let andrei join the team’s workouts, and then coach started giving the older players a hard time when andrei would beat them.
Tumblr media
the backstory of the svech bros sounds a lot like every other hockey kid who didn’t grow up privileged: parents who worked multiple jobs and sacrificed and moved cities to make sure the kids got hockey opportunities. in interviews, the svechnikov brothers have referenced not knowing where food or clothes were going to come from, and they emphasize how close it made them. evgeny says:
Having a brother that we eat from one plate--sleep in one bed sometimes--we went through everything. It's just one person by your side always. It's like going hunting alone or with somebody.
they wear the same number. they talk every day. as soon as the season paused in march, evgeny drove to north carolina. lately, they’re hanging out in michigan. basically, if hockey is not being played, they are together. basically, if you are going to write a primer about andrei, the most important thing is evgeny.
Tumblr media
(my theory is that evgeny is at least part of the reason andrei does not like it when dougie and foegs joke about him being their kid brother. it’s the only joke i’ve ever seen svech refuse to roll with.)
evgeny got drafted by the red wings in 2015 (round 1, 19th overall). he started out with the AHL affiliate in grand rapids, and in 2016 mama svech packed up andrei and moved from russia to michigan. andrei played a season for the muskegon lumberjacks in the USHL. he led the team in scoring and was named USHL rookie of the year. the next season he was the first selection in the CHL import draft, and played for the barrie colts.
ok, so while we’re knocking out the backstory, i want to note that svech’s full name is Andrei Igorevich Svechnikov. don’t tell me that’s not sexy.
furthermore, the very spelling of andrei is sexy. i had a russian-speaking colleague once who had a son named andrei and she would say his name with a little lift at the end. not like the i added another syllable, just like a little caress. i hear it that way when i type it. it makes me happy to type that i at the end. andrei. andrei.
oh sorry, did i veer off topic?
the carolina hurricanes selected andrei second overall in the 2018 draft. he looked just as dumb as everybody always does in their draft night jersey photos, but here’s his draft day suit:
Tumblr media
oh wait, can’t pass up the opportunity for a combine photo
Tumblr media
did i say COMBINE? i meant JAWLINE
Tumblr media
wait one more photo from the combine, just because he looks especially dead poets society in this one:
Tumblr media
upon moving to raleigh, andrei emphatically wanted to live alone, which seems unusual for an 18-year-old entering the NHL and is therefore fertile ground for all sorts of headcanons. he keeps his floors very clean and gets mad when his buddies won’t take their shoes off. i am not making this up. he lives in the same apartment complex as dougie hamilton, warren foegele, joel edmundson (rip), and teuvo teravainen. andrei does not cook and he’s constantly calling them to see who wants to go out to eat.
in that last video i linked you can see foegs stumble and jump off his scooter just before he hits the gate to their parking garage. then the gate rises like magic and svech glides straight through. this is an unsubtle metaphor for andrei svechnikov’s entire athletic existence.
svech purportedly does not play video games, which is wild to me. instead, he practices magic tricks. again, i am not making this up.
wait i’m sorry it’s been at least ten minutes since i looked at a picture of andrei svechnikov holding a bunch of kittens
Tumblr media
ok where was i.
svech had a pretty solid rookie season in 2018-19, but you can look up the numbers elsewhere if you want them. he was the first player born this century to score in the NHL but we don’t like to think about his 2000 birthdate. he played on a line with jordan martinook for a lot of that first season, and you can read more about that romantic nonsense in the ship primer i’ll be writing next. more recently the canes have settled into a top line of svech, sebastian aho, and teuvo teravainen, which is a pretty deadly combo.
one incident of note from svech’s rookie season is that he got knocked the fuck out by alex ovechkin. we’ll be talking more about that in the ship primer too, but if you want the video it’s here.
here, have a little celly:
Tumblr media
svech’s most touted accomplishment is scoring the NHL’s first-ever Michigan-style lacrosse goal. this article has a very good description of how it worked. the postgame interview from that game is so endearing it makes me want to claw my face off. he’s talking so fast (for him) and he keeps repeating that his brother taught it to him, just absolutely determined to make sure everyone knows this milestone belongs to evgeny too.
also, this season, he scored the first playoff hat trick in franchise history.
the thing about andrei svechnikov is that nobody has a bad word to say about him. everybody thinks he’s an amazing player (”skilled and tenacious yet loose and creative”) and everybody compliments his work ethic (shooting pucks for hours after practice or a game) and journalists call him a “transcendent star.” everybody says he’s a great person. everybody calls him special. jordan martinook says svech never has a bad word to say about anyone.
ok it’s kitten time again!
Tumblr media
more svech facts of note:
drives a black mercedes, poorly. “he wants to win on the road, too,” says foegs.
his voice gets very soft when he is uncertain about something but he’s loud when he wins a card game. (”GOOD NIGHT, BROTHER! SEE YOU NEXT GAME!”)
loves french toast for breakfast.
guilty pleasure is milkshakes.
if he was an animal, he’d be a bear (”like a russian bear.”)
does monster summer workouts with ivan provorov
look how fucking cute he is
Tumblr media
the invaluable social media team over at hurricanes hq understands the svech content the world needs. i’m gonna tackle some more of this in the ship primer, but here are the best ones:
who’s your daddy? this video features svech confusedly asking “daddy?”, which is literally everything i ever want in fic or in life. once he finally understands he’s expected to choose between two teammates, he chooses the one who’s his buddy. and then after he’s catcalled from offscreen, he slouches down in his chair and changes his answer. “both,” he mutters, looking unbearably smug. “both.”
cookie face. it takes marty a very entertaining 49 seconds to eat the cookie. then svech hacks the game and wins in 7 second flat. “he’s good at everything,” marty marvels from offscreen.
this is a terrible concept for a video but it does feature svech and dougie doing the famous scene from stepbrothers, and svech giving a sweeping bow. i will forgive him for wearing a duke hat but only because he wears a tarheels hat in the three amigos video above.
has it been too long since a kitten photo? it’s definitely been too long since a kitten photo.
Tumblr media
in conclusion, andrei svechnikov is a massive life-ruining problem and also he is perfect. i love him.

Squeamish - Teuvo Teravainen
Tumblr media
Yet another player that I didn’t realize was such a cutie pie and a half!  I thought this was pretty cute and I hope you like it!  Much love pals! <3
Word count: 730
Warnings: needles (if you don’t like those haha)
Request: “Heyyy, would you write either 38 or 71 with Teuvo? That would be awesome since there isn’t too much of him” - @henna-harpoons
Prompt: “You fainted…straight into my arms. You know, if you wanted my attention you didn’t have to go to such extremes.”
Up next: Sidney Crosby
*******************
“Nope, I’m not doing it!” you grumbled from the car.  You were currently parked outside of a travel clinic to get some basic shots.  You however, hated needles with every fiber in your being and Teuvo was having a very hard convincing you to go in.
“Maybe it’s not worth it, I won’t die if I get these diseases right?!” you pondered, turning your attention to your phone.
“Y/N” Teuvo laughed, “you have to get the shots, come on!”
“I don’t wanna” you grumbled, givng Teuvo your best puppy dog eyes.
“That’s not gunna work this time.  You’ll thank me when you don’t get the nasty flu that’s going around!”  He opened his car door coming around to open yours.  When you didn’t get out he knelt down beside you, placing his hand on your thigh.
“Please Y/N? It won’t be that bad!”
You shook your head no.  You just really hated shots.
“Fine, how about this?  You go get your shots and we can go get ice cream after?”
You smiled and got out of the car, “I think that can work!”  You interlaced your fingers with your boyfriend’s and the two of you made your way into the clinic.
After checking in, you both sat down and waited to be called in.  You tapped your finger on your thigh, your anticipation growing.  Teuvo wrapped his arm around your shoulder, “it’s gunna be ok” he whispered in your ear.  You leaned into his shoulder and tried to relax, thinking about the type of ice cream you were gunna get after.
“Teuvo Teravainen and Y/F/N Y/L/N” she called, beckoning you into the small office.
You both sat down and she closed the door behind you, “so you’re just here for your flu shots correct?”
“Yup!” Teuvo replied as you nodded your head.
“Who wants to go first?” she asked, prepping and sanitizing the equipment.
“I will!” Teuvo volunteered.  He moved onto the bench, rolling up the sleeve of his t-shirt.  The doctor wiped the area down with rubbing alcohol then quickly poked the needle into his arm, taking it out and applying pressure with a cotton pad.
You looked at him with wide eyes, “that was so fast holy.”
“I told you it’s not that bad!” he jumped off the bench, making space for you to sit down for your turn.
You got up, your legs slightly wobbly and moved onto the bench.  You took a deep breath and stuck out your hand for Teuvo to grab.  The doctor wiped down your arm with the cotton pad, a shiver going through your body from the cold.  Teuvo was watching you intently, and gave your hand a squeeze.
“And 1, 2, 3” she counted down, pressing the needle into your arm.  You felt light headed then looked at the sharp piece of metal in your arm and that’s all you remember.
“Y/N, are you ok?” Teuvo asked as you blinked open your eyes.
“What happened?” you asked quietly, finding yourself still in the doctor’s office with both Teuvo and the doctor looking at you.
“You fainted…straight into my arms” Teuvo laughed, “you know, if you wanted my attention you didn’t have to go to such extremes.”
The doctor handed you a cup of cold water and you eagerly gulped it down and turned to Teuvo, “see I told you I wasn’t good with needles!”
“But at least it’s done! Now you’ll be flu free!”
“How are you feeling?” the doctor asked, looking up from the chart.
“I feel fine, a little light headed still but besides that I’m ok!” you explained, carefully hopping off the bench, Teuvo steadying you.
“Alright, well you’re more than welcome to go home, just no driving and take it east for the rest of the day alright?”
You nodded in agreement, “I can do that!”
You and Teuvo made your way back to the parking lot and into the car.  “Home we go!” Teuvo announced as he pulled out of the spot.
“Oh no you don’t, we’re getting ice cream!”
“But the doctor said – “ you cut Teuvo off mid sentence, “the doctor said to take it easy, eating ice cream isn’t hard you dork.”
“Fine!” Teuvo agreed.
“Also, I’m getting like four scoops since you put me through all that trauma today.”
“Anything for my little warrior” Teuvo grinned, placing his hand on your lap.

Dessert|| Part I|| T. Teravainen + Reader
Tumblr media
Requested: No... Just me and my new obsession hanging out Word Count: 1,861 Warning: None - just fluff and more to come.
Part II Part III
The wall is cold against your skin as you lean into it. The earbuds in your ear all but drown out all of the sounds coming from inside the arena. Before, you could hear the other team practicing, now it was more background noise than anything. The scrape of the ice under freshly sharpened blades is a sound you've always enjoyed, even when the team isn't one you work for. The thwack of the pucks hitting the boards and the glass are music to your ears, but you felt a little out of place, standing around listing to the opponent as they practiced.
The game wasn't for several more hours, but you were at the arena to let them in and to be on-site should there be anything they need. That was part of your job description. It wasn't a bad job, truthfully. You really liked what you did. You liked the team you worked for and the perks that came with the job. Some of those perks were getting to interact with teams you grew up watching and loving. You didn't always get to see the games, too busy running around making sure everything was going off without a hitch, but still, you had fun. It was a production and you were the director.
The screen of your phone flashes with images while you watched a game broadcasting from the east coast, it's nearly over, halfway through the third and not going the way you wanted it to. That wasn't the point, though. At least you get to watch a few hockey games while wandering around your arena, it wasn't like you were actually needed. You were simply there as an in case of an emergency kind of thing.
This was your routine when there was a home game. Let the team in, hangout until their practice was done, busying yourself with your work or hanging out in your office watching a game from across the country if there was one on. You didn't typically chill on the concourse or down in the locker area, only because it was hard to get signal. That and you didn't want to be accused of spying on the other team. Not that that was a thing, but you always worried. Some teams got a bit touchy about the opposition seeing them practice before the game.
It made your eyes roll, but you supposed you could understand it. You hadn't made it very far down the tunnel before you'd gotten distracted by the game you'd called up to watch. It was hard not to get sucked into a hockey game, and the fact that somehow your cell signal had no trouble through all the cement this time made it easy for you to pause and just... watch the game.
You're so plugged into the game blaring in your ears, you don't even notice the sounds on the ice have ceased. Perhaps you have the volume up too loud, perhaps you're too focused on the high-speed plays you're watching and the heart racing commentary that's being screamed into your ears. Whatever it is, you practically jump out of your skin when something, someone, taps you on the shoulder. You know you screamed, but you could barely hear it until you plucked the earbuds from your ears.
You heart races as you whirl around, mind screaming at you, make up wild scenarios, all not even remotely possible where you are. Overreact much? It takes more seconds than you would like to admit for the image of the person in front of you to catch up to your brain and you recognize that someone from the other team is standing in front of you.
He's tall on his skates and you have to look up to fully understand who you're looking at, it's not just a practice jersey with the eye of a storm in the center. His face is unobstructed by the helmet you're so used to seeing players wear, though the red line across his forehead tells you it's only recently been removed. His blonde hair is slick with sweat and pushed back from his face. It's not just any player from the opposing team, you know who you're staring at - Teuvo Teravainen. You do your best to feign indifference as your heart starts to race for another reason. You may or may not have a few of his jerseys in your collection of hockey memorabilia. You weren't about to fess up to the truth.
"I didn't mean to scare you," he says just before his lips press into a thin line and his bright blue eyes dip down at the corners. The apology is as clear as the eyes that look at you. His accent is thick but it's smooth and his words are honest.
"You didn't," you lie. It's a lie neither of you believes if the skeptical look that's being reflected at you through those blue eyes was anything to go by. Even if you hadn't done your best imitation of a damsel about to be killed in the latest cheesy horror flick, your pulse was moving faster than a hockey puck shot across the ice. "Okay, maybe you did... A little. That's what I get for not paying attention."
You stuff the phone in your team hoodie pocket, the earbuds following suit. You're technically out of uniform for your line of work but at this moment you hardly care. It's early and cold down in the tunnel. The sweatshirt covers your suit pants and blouse making you look like a strange mashup of a professional and a straight-up hockey fan.
"What can I help you with?" You ask in your most professional voice. You do your best to ignore the heat that's started to creep up your neck as the embarrassment of the situation finally settles between your shoulder blades. First impressions are always something you pride yourself on, this was not an impression you wanted to leave on anyone, let alone this someone.
"I, uh," his lips press together again, a habit you've noticed throughout the games you've watched, he does when he's looking for a word in a language still very much foreign to him. "The puck broke the glass."
A smile spreads across your lips wide enough that your eyes crinkle at the corners and your top teeth bite softly into your bottom lip. "Oh, that's exciting!" You tell him honestly. It's a pain in the ass, as everyone knows, but it always gave you a weird rush of joy to see that happen. "Did you break it or was it someone else on the team?" It's not meant as a tease, more wondering who you should be impressed with, but you're pretty sure he thinks you're teasing him if the blush that creeps over his pale cheeks is anything to go by.
"I did it," he admits, "I'm sorry." And he truly looks it.
You do your best to wave off the apology, truly there is nothing to be sorry for. It's a piece of glass being hit with hard rubber biscuits at speeds that cops would pull drivers over for. It's a wonder more glass doesn't break. "I can get maintenance to get that fixed right up, don't even worry about it. Give me a few minutes, yeah?"
"Thank you," he says, his smile matching yours. It's the first smile you've seen from him since he walked up and scared the shit out of you. He's got a nice smile, you think, though not for the first time. "And uh, I'm sorry for scaring you, honestly"
Your smile softens almost instantly and you feel the warmth of a blush creep up again. "It's fine, seriously. You're not nearly as scary as the game I was watching."
"What game?" He asks because of course, he has to ask.
"Uh," you say, top teeth worrying into your bottom lip. "Just, an eastern conference game. I'm from back east so... I try to keep up with the teams."
"Who were you rooting for?" He asks, clearly still interested in what you were watching.
"Not the team that was winning," you say honestly.
"Who was losing?" He knows you're dancing around the answers, likely sure you're trying not to admit that you root for a team that wasn't the one you worked for.
You sigh softly and pull your phone out of your pocket and open the screen. The score is 3-2 Flyers over Maple Leafs and you gasp. "Holy shit," you say staring at the score, "they won! You made me miss it!" You turn your phone around to show him the score, but you're kind of laughing. Of fucking course, your shit team finds a way to pull a win out of their ass when you aren't watching.
"I'm very sorry," he says again. It's the second or third time he's apologized to you in the span of the maybe ten minutes the two of you have been standing there talking. He didn't make you miss it, even if he kind of did. You'd missed most of the game before you'd tuned in anyway.  "You should let me make it up to you."
Your laugh dies softly on your lips and your eyebrows shoot up into your hairline. "Oh yeah?" you say, a smirk growing at the corning of your lips, "How do you plan on doing that?"
"Dessert" he offers, "after the game, perhaps. As an apology for bothering you."
He hadn't bothered you, not really, but you're certainly not going to say no to a sweet treat. "Yeah, okay. I mean," you roll your eyes a little, the smirk on your lips growing,  "it's the least you can do. It's not every day the Flyers actually win and I did miss it because of you." You're joking. The grin on your lips tells him so. It's kind of fun being playful with a member of your team's opposition.
"That's very true. Winning isn't what they're known for," he says with a laugh. If others had said that, it would have needled you, but it didn't bother you coming from him, not when coupled with the dimples on his cheek and the light shining from his eyes.
"Let me go get maintenance to fix the glass and we can finalize our plans, yeah? I know just the place you can take me." Your grin is big and bright, you don't even bother trying to hide your pleasure at the turn the conversation had taken.
"Sure! Oh, I'm Teuvo, by the way," he says extending his hand out to you.
"I know," you tell him with a smile, "I'm Y/N. I'll be right back."
It takes you a moment to excuse yourself from his gaze but once you have, you're on your way to locating Chuck, your resident handyman. He'll be able to fix the glass and get the rink back to snuff so that the rest of the Hurricanes practice can continue without a hitch. If you're a little distracted by the idea of going to dinner with Teuvo, well, no one needs to know that, right?

Late Mornings:
Teuvo loved mornings.
With the late morning sunlight trickling in through the window and covering you in an ethereal golden glow that never failed to take his breath away, he just couldn't resist wanting to have your beautiful smile be the first thing that greeted him as you woke up, even if it was only he who got to witness it.
You loved mornings too, but not because of breakfast or the quietness of the world as nature simultaneously woke up as one (though those were close reasons), but because of the way you woke up each and every morning, without fail, to your boyfriend hugging you in close and pressing sweet kisses to your face, neck, and finally your lips to rouse you from your sleep.
“Good morning,” He murmured as he kissed the soft skin of your cheek, and without opening your eyes you let a lazy smile spread across your face before blindly moving your arms to curl around his neck and hug him close, unwilling to let go of the comforting warmth he provided on top of you.
"A good morning indeed," You murmured against his chest, not even bothering to make a noise of protest when Teuvo rolled the two of you over to where he could hold you close on top of his chest.
He didn't offer any words after that, just kissed the top of your head with a hum and let you bury your face into his neck, watching you doze off to the serene quietness of the room with a hint of a smile on his face.
He didn't think he'd ever get tired of the sight. His fingers ran a slow trail up and down your back in a barely-there caress against your bare skin, admiring the sunkissed glow of your body thanks to the early morning rays, your eyelashes resting gently against your cheeks.
Teuvo hated the off-season, especially during the first few weeks when he wasn't able to fly back home to Finland just yet. But being here with you, having you tangled in his sheets with a blissed-out expression on your face that he had the pleasure of seeing, it made the early loss against Tampa Bay just a little bit easier for him to cope with.
The right-winger shot a glance over to the nightstand where his alarm clock lay, arching his neck over the endearing mess that you liked to call your hair. It was rather late in the morning, for him anyways, but you always had a knack for making him sleep in late mostly for the fact that he just couldn't resist your puppy eyes.
He'd probably panic at the time if there was something scheduled for the day, though luckily for him there wasn't. Teuvo had finished up the last of his interviews the day before, and the optional practice skates weren't happening for another week, so now was the perfect time to take advantage of lazy mornings, or rather a lazy you. You probably enjoyed the off-season more than he himself did, mostly because you could wrestle him into cuddling on the couch during the late hours of the night without the worry of having to prepare for hockey the next day.
He wasn't complaining though. Especially when he got to witness you slowly rouse yourself from the lazy doze you had found yourself in previously, watching the way your eyes fluttered softly before revealing to the world, to him, the prettiest pair of eyes he had the pleasure of witnessing. The windows to the soul indeed, and you may have called him crazy for it, but he swore that it was just him merely looking at you for him to fall fast and hard.
Really, Teuvo couldn't help himself, not with how sweet and tired you looked just curled up on top of his chest, so he let himself enjoy it when he went to kiss the tip of your nose, delighting in the scrunch you made. In retaliation, you tangled your hands into his hair and tugged gently, smirking when he only shot you a meager glare in return.
"What time is it?" You eventually asked after a long yawn, stretching your body out and, regretfully, rolling off of his own in the process to get a better look at the time. "Just a bit past ten," he answered, watching with a grin as with the revelation of the time, you immediately attempted to scramble out of the sheets with a large stumble in your step.
He found it amusingly ironic for how horrified you'd get when seeing how late you slept, and yet you did nothing to fix your sleeping schedule when you'd stay up until midnight watching Netflix.
"Shit, Teukka, don't you have those interviews?" You exclaimed as you unsuccessfully tried to run a hand through your hair to try to smooth it down.
He raised an eyebrow. "Those were yesterday, babe." And then he slid out of bed after you, stretching out the kinks in his neck and ignoring the way you were ogling him with a slight drop of your jaw.
Teuvo approached you, wrapping his arms around your waist to pull him into his chest. "You're getting worried again," he told you, resting his cheek on the top of your head and swaying the two of you side-to-side.
"Guess I haven't quite calmed down from the craziness of the regular season, then," You wryly stated, your speech getting split up with a yawn as you happily rested your weight against your boyfriend.
You remained like that for a few silent moments, trapped in his comforting embrace and swaying to some imaginary rhythm in the middle of the room.
"Wanna get back in bed?" You eventually asked, tilting your head up to meet his eyes with a cheeky grin that failed at hiding the sleepiness still present in your expression.
"I thought you'd never ask..." And then Teuvo was picking you up with only a surprised squeak escaping your mouth at the movement, the sound quickly turning into a giggle when he brought you down with him to collapse on top of the bed.
You happily snuggled up against the hockey player's side, letting a pleased hum pass through your lips when his arm curled around your waist to bring you in closer.
And then you closed your eyes, letting the morning rays lull you into a state of bliss as you huddled in closer, reaching up to press a gentle kiss to the corner of your boyfriend's jaw.
"I love you," You murmured sleepily, missing the way Teuvo's face lit up at your words and how he grinned so widely that his cheeks hurt. He didn't think he'd ever grow tired of hearing you say those words to him.
Teuvo pulled the sheets over the two of you, cocooning you in a comforting warmth that easily lulled back into a state of dreamless sleep. "I love you," he whispered to you, eyeing you adoringly as even in sleep, you still attempted to be as close to him as possible.
The serene silence of the room only made the scene that much more intimate, and Teuvo let out a sigh of pure contentment before letting his eyes fall shut to follow you into the world of dreams. And screw timeliness, according to his schedule and the silence of his phone (though he had muted notifications the night before), he quite literally had all the time in the world to doze off with you, the love of his life. The reason he got out on that ice every day and played till his heart's content, but nobody would ever hear him say it out loud unless it was just to you.
You made some sort of noise in your sleep, a sweet mumble of unintelligibility that made him pull you closer under the sheets because he just couldn't help himself.
Yeah… Teuvo really loved mornings.

This Week in Caps: Week 11
Welcome to This Week in Caps, a weekly newsletter where I recap everything important that’s been going on in the world of the Washington Capitals this past week.
This Week’s Games
12/11/18 vs Detroit Red Wings, W 6-2
Tumblr media
After a strong win in Columbus, the Caps got a huge lift, as T.J. Oshie returned to the lineup after missing 11 games due to a concussion. The Caps would be looking for another strong showing at home against the Red Wings.
And the Caps indeed got the party started early. Lars Eller got tripped just two minutes in, and the Caps converted on the ensuing power play. On the tail end, Brett Connolly tipped in a John Carlson shot to give the Caps an early 1-0 lead. Midway through the frame, the fourth line got to work. Dmitrij Jaskin skated all the way down the ice to beat the icing, passed it to Nic Dowd, who passed it to Travis Boyd, who finished off the passing play to make it 2-0. Just two minutes after that, Alex Ovechkin shot the puck way wide, but it banked in off a Red Wings player, and the Caps went up 3-0. Chandler Stephenson got a pretty breakaway, but did not end up scoring. The Caps ended the first period scoring three goals.
Ovechkin was at it again in the second period, and halfway through the frame he broke in on a two-on-one with Oshie, took the shot himself, and scored his second of the game. Thirty seconds later, Dowd got cross-checked, and the Caps got another power play. Oshie scored from his usual diamond position, and the Red Wings made a goalie change, replacing Jonathan Bernier with Jimmy Howard after the Caps went up 5-0.
The Wings got themselves on the board very early in the third; just a minute in, the Caps got a little lazy in front of their own net, and Dylan Larkin easily tucked in a rebound to make it 5-1. Then the Caps asserted themselves once more; about halfway through the period, Ovechkin took a shot from the left side that trickled through the goalie, and he scored his third of the game to make it 6-1, and the hats rained down for Ovi’s 21st career hat trick. The Red Wings scored once more with three minutes left, as Gus Nyquist capitalized on another Capitals turnover, but that was all she wrote on the scoresheet, and the Caps won 6-2.
The Caps were outshot 37-25 and had the faceoff disadvantage at 47.8%. The Caps capitalized on 2/2 power play chances and kept the Red Wings to 0/1 on theirs. Braden Holtby saved 35/37 shots.
Ovi had a dominant game, scoring his 21st career regular season hat trick. Nicklas Backstrom had a huge hand in that, collecting 4 assists on the night, assisting on every one of Ovechkin’s hat trick goals. Holtby also had an excellent game, and the fourth line (Jaskin-Dowd-Boyd) had excellent chemistry yet again.
12/14/18 @ Carolina Hurricanes, W 6-5 (SO)
Tumblr media
The Caps got yet another welcome addition to the lineup, welcoming back Tom Wilson to the lineup after missing three games with a concussion. Strap yourselves in, this was a wild one.
And when I say wild, I mean lots of scoring. Jordan Martinook scored on a wraparound goal less than a minute in to give the Canes an early 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, Jonas Siegenthaler made a nifty pass to Alex Ovechkin, who bombed it home to tie the game 1-1. Later in the period, the Caps were on a power play, but they were not the ones to score. John Carlson fumbled the puck at the point, and the Canes got a two-on-nothing break, and Sebastian Aho scored on the backhand to give the Canes a 2-1 lead on a shorty.
Things got worse for the Caps before they got better. In the second period, the Canes scored two power play goals in quick succession: first Aho on a one-timer for his second, and Teuvo Teravainen in front on a wire to make it 4-1 Canes.
But then the Caps were the ones who came back. After a scramble in front, Wilson put home the rebound to make it 4-2. Then it was Ovechkin again, holding the puck in the zone, as Siegenthaler made a great play and then set a screen in front of him, then Ovi faked then scorched the puck home. Then Travis Boyd tipped in a Carlson shot, and the Caps left the second period tied, 4-4.
In the third, the Caps managed to take the lead. Ovechkin scored from his office on the power play, giving the Caps a 5-4 lead and netting his 22nd career hat trick, and his second in two games. But the lead would only last for a few minutes, as Braden Holtby hit the back of the net on a clearing attempt, and former Cap Justin Williams tucked the puck into the wide open net, and the game was tied 5-5.
This game would require overtime. There were chances both ways, though the best chance was when Matt Niskanen took a tripping penalty, and the Canes had a power play for the last ninety seconds of overtime. The Caps would survive, and the game would go to a shootout. It would go as thus: Janne Kuokkanen no goal, T.J. Oshie no goal, Jaccob Slavin no goal, Evgeny Kuznetsov no goal, Phillip Di Giuseppe no goal, Ovechkin no goal, Dougie Hamilton goal, Nicklas Backstrom goal, Justin Williams no goal, Lars Eller no goal, Brock McGinn no goal, Jakub Vrana goal. Caps win the shootout 2-1 in six rounds, and the game 6-5.
The Caps had the shots advantage 29-27, and had the faceoff disadvantage at 41.7%. The Caps converted on 1/2 power play chances, and the Canes converted on 3/6 of theirs. Holtby saved 22/27 shots.
Ovechkin had another great game, potting his 22nd career regular season hat trick, which gave him hat tricks in two straight games. Boyd also extended his goal streak to three games. Siegenthaler had a fantastic game, helping out directly on two out of three of Ovechkin’s hat trick goals, with a primary assist and some fantastic defensive work. The assist was also his first NHL point. Vrana’s game-winning shootout goal was also his first-ever shootout attempt, and his career percentage remains at 100%. On the flip side, the special teams really needs to pick it up a little.
12/15/18 vs Buffalo Sabres, W 4-3 (SO)
Tumblr media
The Caps returned home on the second half of a back-to-back to take on one of the hottest teams in the league this season. Alex Ovechkin, the man of many hat tricks, was looking for a hat trick in a third consecutive game, something that’s never been done before.
It would be Buffalo that got on the board first; just as a Buffalo power play expired, Jack Eichel sent home the rebound on a tight angle to make it 1-0 Buffalo. But less than a minute later, the Caps took advantage of a misplay by goalie Carter Hutton; Devante Smith-Pelly ripped him off, and Brett Connolly tapped it into the empty net to tie the game 1-1. Halfway through the period, Jakub Vrana one-timed home a blistering slapshot off a pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov, and the Caps had the 2-1 lead.
The Sabres came back quickly in the second. On yet another power play, Eichel deked his way past every Cap and scored a beautiful goal to tie it 2-2. A few minutes later, again on the power play, Rasmus Dahlin came down from the point and ended up with the puck on his tape off a rebound, and he scored to restore the lead for the Sabres, 3-2.
But the Caps, specifically the Captain, would not be denied. While playing four-on-four, Ovechkin got the puck in the offensive zone and blasted home a shot to tie the game 3-3. Both goalies, Carter Hutton and Pheonix Copley, played excellently for the rest of the game. This game would go to overtime, and both teams had great chances to end it. Sam Reinhart had an empty net and hit the post in the last minute of regulation, and Kuznetsov had a breakaway in the last minute of overtime which was stopped by Hutton.
The game would go to overtime, and it proceeded as thus: T.J. Oshie no goal, Eichel no goal, Kuznetsov goal, Tage Thompson no goal, Nicklas Backstrom no goal, Casey Mittelstadt goal, Ovechkin goal, Jason Pominville no goal. The Caps win the shootout 2-1 in four rounds, and the game 4-3.
The Caps outshot the Sabres 38-29 and had the faceoff advantage at 53.4%. They were shutout on the power play 0/4, while the Sabres converted on 2/3 chances. Copley made 26/29 saves.
The game was incredibly tight and fun to watch; neither team ever got a lead larger than one goal. Ovechkin was hot yet again, and while he didn’t score a hat trick, he extended his points streak to a career-high 14 games. And yet again, the special teams needs to pick up their game. But overall, a fun game to watch. And if you want to watch Buffalo again, they’re back in town next weekend.
Current record: 20-9-3
What’s Going on in the World of the Caps
Injuries and Recalls
Tumblr media
It was a week of good news and bad news. Two Caps made their return to the lineup this week: T.J. Oshie returned on December 11 vs Detroit, and Tom Wilson returned on December 14 in Carolina. On December 12, Brooks Orpik skated for the first time since undergoing knee surgery. No timetable yet on his return, but important progress for him. Now the bad news: after suffering an injury in the game against Detroit, it was announced that Christian Djoos will be out indefinitely after surgery on his left thigh, which he underwent successfully on Thursday. It will be a long time before he comes back. The Capitals made a corresponding move, and on December 15 they called up defenseman Tyler Lewington from the Hershey Bears. This is Lewington’s first time with an NHL club. He’ll likely spend the majority of his time sitting the bench as the extra defenseman, but there’s a chance he could get into a game or two and see NHL ice for the first time.
Siegenthaler’s First NHL Point
Tumblr media
On December 14 in Carolina, Jonas Siegenthaler recorded his first NHL point, a primary assist on an Alex Ovechkin goal, his first of three hat trick goals that night. It is also the first NHL point for a player of Thai descent. Right after the goal, the Captain made sure to get the milestone puck for Siegenthaler. (x)
The Caps Drew Holiday Cards, and You Can Buy Them
Tumblr media
The Capitals are now selling holiday cards. Even better: all the cards were drawn by some of the players. They are selling in packs of 12 for $20, and proceeds are going to charity. You yourself can own questionable art drawn by T.J. Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Travis Boyd, and more. Kuzy was especially proud of his. (Article, Video)
Max Scherzer at the Caps Game
Tumblr media
Washington Nationals pitcher and three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer attended the Capitals game on December 11 against the Red Wings. He and his wife Erica had great seats to a fantastic game, and when Alex Ovechkin netted a hat trick, Scherzer threw his hat onto the ice. (x) (x)
Capitals Players Host Holiday Party for DC Families
Tumblr media
Brett Connolly, Nic Dowd, Chandler Stephenson, and Pheonix Copley hosted a holiday party at Medstar Capitals Iceplex for local families on December 12. Families were able to play hockey, get face painting, and participate in other holiday activities. Gifts, which were purchased by Caps’ and Wizards’ significant others, were distributed. (x)

Social Media Post of the Week
