It shouldn’t be possible for Tessa to feel so energetic at this hour. Sure, she was an early riser but the night before had been a late one. And she hadn’t even had her morning coffee yet. Considering their discussion last night, that might’ve taken a toll on anyone. Love confessions and feelings shared could be draining sometimes. But not for her. Instead, she felt the opposite: elated and full of beans. Maybe it was the hopeless romantic in her that sparkled, the type of thing that usually had people rolling their eyes at her for being so idealistic. It was the exact same when they learned of her hobbies, her unrealistic expectations of the great unknown. Of ghosts and aliens and astrology. The type that people who chastise her, even her own friends, for being so willing to believe in things that didn’t exist - including her idealistic perception of love. Tessa always called those people boring; where was the fun in life if you didn’t believe in something beyond the universe? Diego, whilst he never hesitated to poke fun at her or roast her when she did (and when she didn’t deserve it, albeit she usually managed to get her taste of revenge), he never ridiculed for it. At times, she was even willing to admit he was maybe open to her ideas. Either that, or he did a good job of pretending to. She much preferred to think of the former - he couldn’t possibly have been that good of an actor. But this renewed sense of energy could be how everything felt lighter because he was here and with her. Maybe it was because Diego was the last thing she saw before falling asleep and the first she saw when she woke up. Could it get any better than that? It wasn’t that much different from the countless times this had happened, but this time was different because everything was now out in the open. The vulnerability in it was beyond something she could put into words other than it was beautiful.. Yeah, she still had plenty to process and her thoughts to get in order but she was looking forward to it. Looking forward to looking forward. Her heart was so full of love right now, it was intoxicating. It made her want to take back the need to think about it. What more was there to think about?
Well, everything, actually. Tessa wanted to ensure that when she (inevitably, because she knew damn well there was no other option at this point) told him how she felt, how she really felt about him, that she wanted for them to take the leap of faith and explore what could be. She wanted to ensure she was doing it for all the right reasons. Not because she was completely consumed by his confession last night, not because she was completely swept up in the moment, not because she wanted to rush. She wanted to be sure that this was what she felt. She wanted to ensure that even when the rush wore off and the dust settled, that she was still completely ready for things to change. It was becoming increasingly difficult to take her time with it all though, because it was all she could think about. The words that left his lips, the way it made her feel. The perfect scene around them, the jokes and laughter between them, the fleeting moments where she was oh, so tempted to close the distance between them. He was distracting. Definitely Diego’s fault and not hers. A girl can be in denial, can’t she?
Here he was, the same as he always was, poking fun at her. And she responded in the way she always did, rolling her eyes and trying to stifle a laugh but failing miserably. Then, Tessa proceed to pick up the cushion on the couch and throw it at him. “Shut up, you,” she shot back pathetically, “Don’t try me. I will do it.” She would never dream of it. Tessa respected him way too much to follow through on that. The internet was permanent like that and with someone who had an established social media presence like she did, she would never even dream of dragging him through it like that. Not without his consent. But they were kidding around, so she had to throw in an empty threat. Another playful roll of her eyes at the alien comment. What became a teasing torment soon found it’s way to being a term of endearment. Was it weird that she secretly loved it, even when she protested otherwise? Not many people would be thrilled with being called ‘little alien’ and Tessa probably wouldn’t, if it’d been anyone else calling her it. But this wasn’t just anyone. This was Diego; it was no wonder why her heart fluttered every time. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she replied with an feigned innocent, sweet smile. “I’m lovely, and you know-” She was very nearly tempted to add the line, you know you love me but feared that it might makes things awkward. Well, not awkward but almost like…it was complicated and it just felt like it was in poor taste, given recent events. “And you know it.”
And yeah, he absolutely one hundred percent nailed it when he implied she enjoyed being his pillow. But why would she give him the satisfaction in knowing he was right? Pfft. Not at this hour. “Uh, that’s because you’re heavier than me and I don’t have the strength to? Duh.” The last part wasn’t really a lie; whilst in that comment she suggested it was physical strength she was lacking but in reality, it was her beating heart which refused to move him. Besides, how many times had she used him as a pillow in the past? Maybe she was only returning the favour. However, Tessa knew it went way beyond that. She didn’t want to separate herself from him. If that wasn’t love, then truly, what was? Honestly, the more she thought and considered it, the more she wondered how on earth had she not realised this sooner. Last night, was as though he’d opened her eyes to all she’d been denying herself. Opened her eyes that he was there, right in front of her, open hearted and ready for her. For whatever their relationship consisted of after she made her deliberation. “So, yeah, definitely still a hostage situation.” A slow smile etched its way to her lips as her eyes watched him, every slight detail and reaction - it was how she noticed the colouring blush tinging his ears. Little details like that she wouldn’t normally come across, and no, she wasn’t staring. Pfft. D’s retort only made her want to play along and tease him even more. “Do you wanna know?” She could have a lot of fun with this, even if it was only made up.
Tessa crossed her arms over her chest, her head tilting as she eyed him, biting her lip to stop the stupid smile from gracing her lips, a rebuttal at the tip of her tongue. Shit, what was the last thing she remembered watching? Shrugging, she looked up at the ceiling like it would give her answers. It didn’t. “Oh, you know. The bit where the…the um, the guy did the…thing.” But she was adamant that she’d been watching. Very convincing. Even if her eyes had been watching the TV, she’d been too busy talking to Diego, looking at Diego, thinking about Diego…It wasn’t her fault he was so damn distracting. Which seemed to be a recurring thing these days. “What’s the last thing you remember then?” Deflecting from the question she couldn’t answer by asking him the same question. Perfect. Her hands rested on her hips as she pretended to scowl at him. The way he was giving her orders in her own house! The cheek of it. But it felt so natural, as if this was equally parts his place than hers. How comfortable he must’ve felt for doing that. “Wow, so you’re already giving me your breakfast order and now ordering me around my own house. Whatever happened to ‘ladies first,’ D, huh?” she teased, knowing full well he could do whatever the hell he wanted and she would give it to him. Her gaze drifted to his hair and a little grin crept on his lips as she moved towards him, one hand running through his hair. “Your hair looks cute like this though.” Could hair even look cute? According to Tessa, it did now. She slowed down as her fingers made their way to the back of his head, drifting down to his neck and then to his cheek. She couldn’t help herself, lingering a little too long, trying to focus on anything but the way her breath caught in her throat, her heart beating erratically. All of it felt so natural and right. The most comfortable, tender, real. It was then it dawned on her: weren’t the best love stories, the ones rooted in friendship? How she didn’t see or admit it to herself sooner, she would never know. A light flush coloured her cheeks as she was lost in thought, clearing her throat to bring her back to reality and reluctantly dropped her hand. “Go on then, don’t take too long though, okay?” Tessa insisted, a teasing tone in her voice as she grinned at him.
Keeping up with Tessa had not always come to him easily. In fact, many times, Diego wondered why he put himself through all of it. Was this girl's company truly worth the added stress? Lucky for him, he got the answer to that fairly quickly. Of course, no one really assesses someone's friendship and relationship potential at the same time. Diego only got as far as 'she's a good friend', but nothing more. When he came to term with his growing feelings, he was content. Call it a typical guy thing, but he didn't have many follow-up questions. Good friend equaled good girlfriend material, right?
He watched as she went through the motions to fully wake up. She hadn't said anything yet, about how uncomfortable it was to sleep on the couch. It was possible that she'd just save those remarks for later. Although, Diego had an inkling that he'd just deal with the teasing when it came. And with Tess, it always did. He didn't mind though. It wasn't intentional, but sleeping next to her was an irreplaceable moment. It wasn't the first time, of course, but it was the first time he fell asleep next to her with complete vulnerability. All parts of him were out in the open for her to leave or take. With last night's confession, there was no part of him that was hidden. "I have a hefty social media reach," his hands rested on his waist, teasing in an exaggerated tone. Diego really should tread carefully, because she was right. He was familiar with her social media presence, and at first, he had been hesitant about that - fearing one day, his worse picture would end up online. "You are a menace little alien."
Diego could only roll her eyes at her description, hostage. Someone in this room was a drama queen, and it wasn't him. "Hey, you could've pushed me off, but maybe you just like being my pillow. So, not really a hostage situation when you really think about it." But, he was silently grateful that she did stay with him all night and didn't abandon him in the living room. Surely, her bed was more comfortable, but having her here - Diego would take a hundred days on this couch over his own bed. His ears felt warm, an unconventional flush reaching them when she batted her eyelashes at him. How did she have this much energy so early in the morning? "Maybe I do, maybe I don't," he wondered out loud. It was unlikely he uttered anything in his sleep, so he played dumb.
"Oh, coffee is definitely on you. This is a more of a, I'm inviting and you're paying, kinda situation. Hey, we watched part of it. Right? What's the last thing you remember?" He offered her a wide grin when she agreed with more than one yes, god this girl was going to be the death of him. “Pancakes okay? I could go for a stack with maybe like a hash brown on the side. Lucky you that you can get changed, but before you run off, I'm going to at least splash some water in my face and do something about...this," he said, gesturing to his messy hair. "Then, bathroom is all yours." As he spoke, Diego didn't notice how...domestic it all sounded. How comfortable it all was.

With her best attempt to scowl at him like a headmistress or teacher scolding a badly behaved student, it did not take much for Tessa to break out of quick character with a soft laugh. Of course, he would be able to pull that out of her when she was trying to be mock-serious. "You can do that? Man, that's impressive; you managed to do with without even blinking or moving an inch. How did you manage that?" She asked, pretending to be serious as she narrowed her eyes, acting like she was scrutinising Diego, figuring out the hypotheticals. "I'll sit here and wait for them to take me away then. or at least they can try," she added, sticking her tongue out at him. If that were the case, she would be waiting a long time. It was funny to speculate and pretend, though. Just one of her random quirks he brought out of her; one that typically would have earned strange looks from other people. But Diego wasn't just anyone. Besides, it wasn't her fault that he essentially egged her on, and encouraged it. The littlest things were so entertaining, especially when he was there with her.
So many questions at the tip of the tongue and yet Diego managed to answer everything, taking them as they came. How could she not? Curiosity was her innate nature, something she could never shake off. It was her plethora of questions that drew her to wanting to uncover the unknowns of the universe, believe in something more. And maybe, along the way, she could discover the answer to matters of her own heart. Scrap that, she already knew exactly where she stood. Even though she needed to think about it, just to make sure she wasn't reacting upon the moments and not changing her mind, going back on her word after getting his hopes up. She couldn't do that to him. Never. For her, it was imperative to be certain. Maybe part of her was searching for a sign somewhere, why it wouldn't work. But so far, nothing. Which was a good thing, of course! This wasn't something she'd done first, being friends first. Usually, there was always that intention at the start when someone asked her on a date, or something or other. Never to the point of being close with someone for so long in a platonic manner, for feelings to develop without even realising it. There was so much more to lose, so much more at stake. Which is why she had so many questions. Needed to do it right. It all felt surreal, still. Like she was in a dream and would wake up at any moment. Diego took her out of her thoughts, a sweet smile gracing her lips when he confirmed no issues. "Good," she said with an emphatic, triumphant nod.
"Bold of you to be making assumptions. I just hope you don't get disappointed by the pay rate..." she said with a thoughtful hum, eliciting a soft laugh. Diego really did have a rebuttal for everything, didn't he? She loved every minute of it. Tessa's eyes were fixated on him, almost as though she was giving him some sort of death glare. Like she was trying to pierce through his soul with her gaze, in the hopes maybe she'd catch him out and off guard, enable him to get flustered in the way he had been doing to her for the whole time they were there. How he seemed....momentarily almost stumped for words. Was he? Or was Tessa wishful thinking? Still, her eyes bored into his, waiting for an answer, the same little smirk plastered over her face as she patiently waited. Hoping the effect was paying off. It felt like an eternity waiting for an answer, her eyes widening in genuine surprise when he finally spoke, quoting Tessa. He used her own words against her! How dare he?! Impressive, though. Impressive, indeed. "I think that's plagiarism. Not a good start here, is it? Assuming job pays, plagiarism the employer...we're going through bleak times. Shame, I was hoping for more than that from you," she said, shaking her head slowly, tutting at him. It was the opposite in actuality. Luckily it wasn't an actual job. But she couldn't resist messing with him some more, it was just amusing to play around.
As much as she liked being out and about, exploring, and being a bit too adventurous at times, there was something so nice about conversations in cars, she found. The simplicity of it all, of being immersed in the world around them but like there was a line, a separation of them. Like the car was their little bubble. Them versus the world. It made it easier to talk which was probably why she'd let slip some probably corny things. Or maybe it was simply in her nature. Just...natural. It surprised her, how easy it all was, how the words rolled off her tongue with ease. "That's because you are," she replied, pulling a face at him and quietly laughing before doing the same, heading out of the car and shutting the door.
Yawning was contagious; he yawned, she yawned, and so on forth. Rolling her shoulders back, she lolled her head side to side, her hand reaching to rub the back of her neck. So, it wasn't the comfiest position to have slept in but she wouldn't change it for the world. Wouldn't have changed anything. Falling asleep next to Diego and waking up next to him? That was everything to her. And to think maybe...this could be a regular occurrence. Sometimes, it happened but... there was something about this that felt different. Knowing what she knew now. Or was she finally coming to terms with her own feelings, accepting them for what they were? Time would only tell. His threat made her laugh and she grinned, practically beaming at him as she shook her head in protest. "No, I don't think you will actually. I have a hefty social media reach...you mess with me and I'll plaster your most embarrassing photos for the entire internet to see..." she retorted with a smug smile, satisfied with her own threat. Not that she would ever do that to him...or not completely anyway. Depended on his definition of embarrassing, she supposed. Tilting her head a fraction, her eyebrows rose, giving him a look that said, 'duh.' "Yeah, what's your point? I couldn't disturb you when you were holding me hostage, using me as your pillow anyway," Tessa teased, though the thought made her smile affectionately. Besides, she silently tagged on the end, I would rather wake up in an uncomfortable position next to you than wake up in my room alone, knowing you're right here. God, she could imagine the relentless teasing had she said the words out loud. The 'what?' that came from his lips was simply adorable, her smile widening as he spoke. "What, so you don't think those things about me then?" Tessa asked oh-so-innocently, batting her eyelashes at him. How she was so bright first thing in the morning, when she didn't even get to sleep until late was beyond her. Always ready and rearing to go. "I thought coffee was meant to be on me? For being such a bad influence, getting you to come in and watch - or sleep through - a movie," she queried, recalling back to last night. "Either way, yes and yes. What are you thinking for breakfast? The most important meal of the day after all!" She clapped her hands together, rising from her seat. "I better get changed."
Damn, she was good. And he almost raised an eyebrow at her hypothetical. If this was anyone else, he’d wonder how they came up with these things, but it didn’t surprise him coming from her. She was always saying the most random things, Diego had grown used to it. Though, it had taken him a while. He remembered their early days, always surprised by the things she said. How her mind just came up with these random things. Still, the things that once caught him by surprise, he now found absolutely adorable. "And just like that, a recording of our conversation is being sent to the authorities." Yeah, he got her ass now. They both knew though, there was no meaning behind their words. Diego just kept going, partly to see the tint in her cheeks and to continue seeing that wonderful smile that brought him to his knees.
The questions were not too much of a surprise, but somehow, he was still unprepared. Funny. It mirrored how he felt about her too. Diego wasn't too surprised when he came to terms with his feelings. Once he got over the initial shock, and the questions along the lines of, how did this happen? Things made sense, his feelings seemed obvious. Yet, he still felt unprepared with the rush that hit him. Like getting smacked across the face with the truth. Oh shit, I'm falling for this girl. and then, a bit more relaxed, oh...of course, I'm falling for her. Hm, Tessa had a point. Maybe, he did deserve a bit more credit, but standing next to her, level one seemed pretty appropriate. "It could never be an issue," he assured her.
This pretend job interview had really been flipped on him, how did this even happen? "Ah, well I'm assuming the pay is good. What can I say? I'm optimistic." He couldn't deny that the smirk on her face made him nervous. He felt the odd butterflies rummaging in his stomach, and he wondered, is that the reaction he elicited in her? How did Tessa put up with him? Diego didn't know, but he hoped that she wouldn't get tired of him someday. Her laugh brought him to life, but the question stunned him a bit. Did Tessa really not know the actions he meant? How he was always a phone call away? Or how he showed up time and time again, despite her pushing him away? How he couldn't stay away from her, and he silently vowed to be there for her? Diego wasn't sure he was up for that today, for having to bare his soul further. He had done enough of that today, and he just couldn't...not when he didn't know how the story ends. So, instead, to answer her question about his actions...he quoted her. "That's for me to know, and you to find out." If he needed more time, Diego only shook his head slowly and offered a smile. As if to say yes, though he didn't point out who (between them) needed that time and space. That much, seemed obvious.
Tessa was saying all the right things, the words his heart didn't even know he wanted in that moment. No one else she'd rather share it with. That was heartwarming, and he felt special. Really special. So, maybe he did have a shot after all. His heartbeat sped up just a tiny bit, Diego shouldn't. He knew he shouldn't get his hopes up so quickly, but there was just something about exchanging these words in the comfort and privacy of his car. "You always think I'm exaggerating," he added, lightly squeezing her chin before letting go, and opening the car door.
The conversation had started with random facts. Diego reciting the fun facts he knew about the movie. Though, he wasn't a talker during movies, he did enjoy discussing these things afterwards. But between fun facts and their conversation steering away from the movie, he felt himself dozing off. That wasn't an indicator of the movie, or his company - Diego was very entertained, but it was like his exhaustion had caught up to him. Her hair looked a bit out of place, sleeping on the couch was definitely not the most comfortable. He couldn't help the yawn that followed, taking the opportunity to stretch his limbs. "Hey...good morning." The man hadn't even been awake for five minutes, and she was already calling him out. "Photos?" A groan fell from his lips. "I will get you back for that Tess." Despite his threat, a smile quickly formed. "Drooling on you, and yet you stayed with me all night." Hey, she could've easily moved to her bed and left him here, right? "What?" Did he? Diego did tend to mumble in his sleep sometimes, Tessa knew this, but a lot of what he said never made much sense. Or, was she just messing with him? That seemed more likely. A bit unfair of her to mess with him so early in the morning. "Did I? You sure you weren't dreaming it? Wishing I said all those things about you?" After a moment, he stood up from the couch and stretched once more. Just for good measure. "So, can I interest you in some coffee..maybe breakfast?" A glance down at his watch. "I have a few hours before work."

"I'd be careful if I were you... You're giving me ideas. Since, at least I don't think you have paper or a pen, then what's going to stop me from doing something before you have the chance to write a note? And here I thought you were smarter than that, D," Tessa teased, the idea amusing her greatly. As if she would ever dare, though the idea was tempting on the occasions where he pissed her off - nope, even then she could never. The idea of speculating was more than plenty for her to go on. Such as now, with the way he managed to get under her skin and fluster her without even trying. The smirk that adorned his lips indicated all too well that Diego knew what he was doing. Made her want to wipe it off his face but he also wore it so well that she would be content with leaving it there, no matter how often he left her with rosy cheeks. To his rebuttal, she just offered a sweet smile.
Tessa was simply the girl who asked too many questions. Her questions could range from: why do you have to 'put your two cents in when it is really only a 'penny for your thoughts?' Where’s that extra penny going? to are there any belly buttons on Adam and Eve? to where does it say Humpty Dumpty is an egg in the nursery rhyme? All varying kinds of weirdness. They were fun to ask; made for good discussion points. And this now, discussing his choices for level numbers, that was frankly another one of her usual questions. And maybe there was a part of her who liked to put him on the spot, naturally interested in his answers. She liked knowing what he had to say, his thoughts. Her eyes were trained on his as she patiently waited for an answer, tugging her lower lip between her teeth. "Okay. Fair enough, that makes sense. I still think you could probably give yourself more credit than level one, though. From what you've told me today, that is," Tessa mused. "But that's okay. I'm sure we can find ways to level you up, get us on the same level. Unless I keep leveling up, that is... but we'll see," she added with a thoughtful hum. Her smile grew at Diego's additional comment about liking her 'romantic vibe.' "Good! I'm glad it won't become an issue then."
How the tables have turned! Yes! Yippee! It was nice, refreshing even, to finally be on the other side. To be the...flusterer. That wasn't even a word, was it? She didn't care. All she knew that as much as Diego did his usual, trying to keep his cool stance, which she would normally have believed, but she knew him too well. The way he kept nodding along to whatever she said... almost as if he was stumped for words and then to top it all off, there was that little stutter when she suggested now being the interview. She caught him off guard and that gave her a wave of smugness and satisfaction, her turn to develop a little smirk on her face. It was nice to be in his shoes for a change. "But you just said the pay was good," Tessa pointed out, quizzically raising an eyebrow, that very smirk growing more and she never even tried to hide it. Why would she? It wasn't like he ever provided her with that same courtesy! "Your actions, huh?" she said, as though having to consider the words, unable to contain the bubble of laughter that slipped. "What actions are those then? And you never prepared for this interview? Did you want to completely throw the job opportunity or what?" Of course, Tess was merely teasing him. He had managed to get her worked up so many times today alone, and many more days to come she assumed, so this was her way of getting her own back. Seeing if she could return the favour and push his buttons for a change. "Would you like to reschedule this interview? Do I need to give you more time to prepare?" How funny that was, considering it was her who needed the time to prepare...whatever this was, whatever the next step in their relationship was. Assuming that's what would happen, that is. Of course, it would, who was she kidding?
Hearing him thank her honestly made her heart melt, and made her feel all warm and gooey inside. In the most sickening, cheesiest way possible. Tessa's perfect style and way of being, that was for sure. Such simplicity in a sentence, such a normal phrase and gesture, and yet, it meant everything to her. Diego meant everything to her. "Sharing is caring. And there's nobody else I'd rather share it with." Oh, god, had she really said that out loud? Being cheesy again. Was she allowed to do that, knowing she was making him wait for her to think about them? Again, she couldn't take that back either. It didn't have to be a big thing, and it wasn't really. It was the truth; there was no one else that she would rather share it with. That place, or anything else, really. Tessa wanted to share everything with him. Anything he wanted. Surely that meant something, didn't it? That whatever would happen between them, it was inevitable. The way he looked at her brought butterflies in her tummy, the sound of his laugh was like music to her ears. Anything he said and did had a profound effect on her... How long had it been like that? How long has these feelings been festering? "I think you're exaggerating, personally, but thanks," she said, eliciting a soft giggle. And why was her heart racing so fast when he held her chin? "That's me." Another laugh. She shook her head at his mention of bribery, muttering an offhanded comment about how he shouldn't need to be bribed under her breath, rolling her eyes when he called her a huge bully but laughed yet again anyway before they headed inside.
The Legend of Zorro probably wasn't the first film Tessa would have chose, honestly, but a deal was a deal. She'd let him choose for a change so she couldn't comment on it. In fact, it turned out she ended up enjoying it more than she thought - it had been a fair amount of time since watching it for the first time. Maybe she enjoyed it because she was in his company. And how much of the movie had she actually been watching when she wasn't talking to him? Sometimes about the movie, other times literally anything else. Diego was most definitely the first to fall asleep and she only realised when she rambled for about five minutes straight and received no response in return. She never had the heart to move him, besides he looked adorable when he was sleeping. After that, it never took her that long to drift off either. The next time she stirred from her peaceful slumber was when she heard the sound of his voice. "Hmm?" she murmured, yawning quietly before opening her eyes, tilting her head a fraction to peer up at him. "Hi," she giggled. "You fell asleep first, for the record. I have photos to prove it," Tessa teased, a little grin shaping her lips. "Drooling on me and anything, disgusting." She was only playing him up, teasing to get a reaction out of me. "And you were rambling in your sleep about how amazing I am. It was cute."
"If something happened to me, yep...i gotta get on it. I'm going to leave a note just in case and everything. Seeing you like this, they'll definitely never suspect you." Who would ever suspect her like that? Tessa looked beautiful, so innocent - she was absolutely right. No one would believe she'd do anything to him. He was lucky that this was all a joke, just playful what ifs. He couldn't wipe the smirk from his face, her face completely flushed. "Fine fine, maybe I won't find out." It seemed like just a matter of time really, he could wait.
He wondered what prompted her question, why she was so curious about his decision to place her in level 5. What was she trying to figure out? Was she collecting information to help her make a decision? Diego was comfortable with many things, the dangers of his job, the uncomfortable situations he was constantly in, admitting how he felt to her. Yes, all of that could be done. However, now...living in the limbo, waiting for her to decide. That was not something he was comfortable with yet. His chin rested on his hand, turning his head slightly to glance at her. Her piercing blue eyes meeting his. This was a sight he'd never get tired of, Diego was certain. "Level 5...well, I have to admit that I just picked a number at random. Five seems serious enough, and that romantic vibe just overflows from you. Compared to me, five seems appropriate." Okay yes, maybe it started with a random number, but his own analysis made sense. "I like your romantic vibe though, just for the record."
Wow, Tessa sure had a lot of questions today. Though, maybe he did this to himself comparing their situation to applying for a job. Diego didn't mean to, it was another way to tease her. Now, it seems like the tables turned on him and Diego was the flustered one. He nodded along, agreeing with the interesting portion of it, but he was treading carefully. Scared he was already in the metaphorical dog house, and he just didn't know it yet. "Pay rate...oh well, I don't think I know those details yet, but the benefits are very promising. And that's all I really need to know or care about." One more glance her way, and the smile on her face confirmed all he needed. He was still in her good graces. "T-the interview?" Oh, was it? "I'd hope you didn't have to ask that, that my actions would kind of speak for themselves." He gave her a shrug, Diego supposed he couldn't really prevent her from asking. He loved it though, loved knowing that she had questions and wanted to know more. It meant he was on a good path. Making good progress. "Ask away, though now I feel I should've prepared more for this interview." What if he failed? Diego was beginning to get in his head about this fake interview, debating his answers. Thoughts suddenly interrupted by her next words. I will show you whatever you want. He couldn't help the smirk tugging on his lips. Tessa probably didn't have any specific meaning in mind, and he knew he shouldn't let his mind run free. "Whatever I want, huh? I'll keep that in mind."
Yes, it was late, but now Diego regretted interrupting their night. Clearly, neither of them was ready to go home. Leaving just seemed like the mature thing to do. Now, as the car was idling and his gaze remained on her, Diego knew - he wasn't going home just yet. "I appreciate you sharing it with me," he confessed with a wide smile. It's partly why telling her how he felt seemed right, felt right. A soft laugh fell from his lips, shaking his head slowly. Impossible to pretend he didn't hear that. The deep flush in her cheeks driving him crazy. Diego glanced at her up and down, brows playfully raised. "My view is pretty good too, stunning really." It was the truth, but it also helped that this could fluster her - the same way she had earlier. He playfully rolled his eyes at her, "sure, a good girl," reaching out to hold her chin. "Coffee is all the bribery I need Tess." Diego offered a triumphant grin, his eyes lighting up at her comment. Something so simple, but their plan amused him greatly. He could be content with this for months to come, even if she didn't decide. "Hm, nope. You're a huge bully, but I'll take my win. I'm in, let's head over." The idea of Tessa bullying a man like Diego was laughable, but if they knew them...honestly, it'd make a lot of sense.
The movie he picked? The Legend of Zorro. He wasn't too picky with the movie choice, he rather pick a movie he had already watched. It allowed for any possible conversation in between. Diego wasn't usually the conversation type. He liked watching his movies in silence, enjoying every moment. But, with Tessa...he knew he'd be distracted regardless. What he didn't expect though, was to doze off in the middle of the movie. As he woke up, he wasn't too sure what time it was. He found himself snuggled against her shoulder, the blanket they were using earlier still half-draped over them. A quick glance at his watch, 5:00 am. The tv screen displayed the streaming site logo, the house quiet as any other. God, he really didn't want to go to work now. "Tess...hey, wake up sleepyhead. We..uh..kind of fell asleep here."

"You don't look very frightened. Wait, I don't you don't get scared anyway? Now you're just being a jerk," Tessa said, shaking her head and rolling her eyes at him playfully. Of course, she never thought for a second that he was being a jerk, but he was playing her up as per usual so she thought the insult - or endearment, depending on which way you looked at it; probably both - certainly applied in that situation. A grin splayed across her lips and she shuffled a bit closer, leaning forward as if to scrutinise his face quizzically. "If something happened to you? Like what? You think the police are going to do anything with someone who looks as innocent as me?" she teased, posing as if waiting for someone to take a photo, batting her eyelashes at him. It was typically something that enabled her to worm her way out of sticky situations at times. Not that she got into many sticky situations but she definitely was not completely innocent as she may seem. To be expected considering her constant thirst for adventure. "Wow. Can't believe how lucky I am. How will I ever thank you?"
Uh, oh. That look...Tessa knew that look all too well. She could tell he was trying his hardest but if she peeked, she could see the way the corners of his lips twitched upwards. "Because..." she trailed off too, her mind scrambling for words before she would inevitably grow flustered once again. That man will be the death of her. "Because...because it just is! That's for me to know and for you to...maybe not find out," she claimed, scrunching up her nose and pressing her hand against her cheeks, feeling the way they heated up again. And now she couldn't shed herself of those thoughts. Diego was just... The effect he had on her was something she could not describe, nor admit to herself.
"Why level 5, specifically? Why not levels 2, 3 or 4? 5 feels very advanced, even for me." Why was this even a legitimate question coming from Tessa? In reality it probably was just the most random number Diego's mind summoned at the time, but she had a tendency to ask random questions for no reason. She was sure he was used to it by now with how long they'd been friends. As she awaited his response, she tilted her head slightly, bright blue eyes gleaming with curiosity. Wondering how much she could push. Was that even fair? Because she was making him wait, and it had been enough for him to admit his feelings for her to begin with so... all this waiting, pretending like he's applying for a job or something felt like it was almost unfair. Then again, he did this to himself by sounding so formal - she wouldn't have commented otherwise! She was in two minds about it but still, she waited. "Oh, really? That's interesting, very interesting. What is the pay rate exactly? I don't remember seeing it on the job advert..." Good benefits? That brought another smile to her face. If it wasn't already there that is. "Is this the interview? Is this the part where I ask you what makes you think you're a good candidate for the role?" Now she was definitely tormenting him, she knew that. But it was payback for the 'almost or not' conversation from earlier. When Diego smiled, she smiled too. His smile was contagious and she would do anything to see it remain on his face. It complimented his other features, enhanced them. "I will show you whatever you want, Diego." She never realised the potential weight that those words could hold; they were words that came and left her mind without a care or thought in the world. Swinging their hands together during the walk to the car, she never responded at first, grinning to herself as she listened to him until he seemingly got caught off guard by her words. His reactions were always priceless. "I know that. But you were the one outing yourself as an old man!"
Her belt unbuckled yet she made no move to get out yet. It was nice, just sitting here talking as usual. It was nothing new...but at the same time it felt like there was something new. Something brewing... Tessa knew she had a lot to think about but as her mind continued to gravitate, she was half certain her mind was already made up. Needed time to double check though. No rush, he would wait, as he promised time and time again that night. "Yeah, it's one of my favourite places; the view is beautiful..." she sighed in contentment, her gaze flickering back to him, admiring his face. "The view here is nice too." Did she just say that out loud? Oh crap. Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap. As always, her cheeks completely flushed, her eyes widened - mortified that her thoughts meant to be for her own brain, had tumbled out loud right in front of him. Tessa laughed nervously, biting her lip to stop herself from uttering more word vomit as she looked out of the window in front of them. Her eyes lit up when he accepted her suggestion to have a movie night, clapping her hands together excitedly. It may have been late but the night was still young - or so she would say. It could be early hours of the morning and she would still insist it wasn't late. "I don't know what you mean. I'm a good girl," she protested with feigned innocence, giggling softly. "But it's a deal! Coffee is on me. I'll give you however much coffee you need." The question about the movie choice earned a shrug from Tessa; honestly, she hadn't thought that far ahead. "I don't know. I was thinking you could choose, if you want? We always watch whatever I pick - and no, I actually don't bully you, so shush! - and it's a nice change to let you. You can flick through all the choices while I get our popcorn sorted, if you'd like?"
It's not an accusation if there's truth to it, he mimicked in his head before playfully rolling his eyes at her. She was right after all, doesn't mean he liked it. "Yeah, violence. Verbal threats and all, terrible. It's very frightening," he added, just for dramatic effect. Diego looked up at the sky, as if considering all his options. What did happen if she wasn't so lucky? "Oh, easy! there would already be a police report with your name on it. You know, in case something happened to me," he explained, patting his chest to emphasize himself. "But, again...I like you. So, you're off the hook."
For a moment, Diego wondered if he had taken it too far. The whole 'proving a point.' Though, her laughter showed him otherwise. He almost didn't catch the way her breath came out a tad bit slower. Was she expecting something? He did his best to contain his smirk, the idea of kissing was also on her mind. Wasn't it? And if it wasn't before, he wondered if he had left that thought in her mind. "Why's that cruel? Unless..." Diego let his words trail off, just waiting to see if there was any follow-up.
"Fine fine, I'm level 1 and you're like...level 5." Or at least, he felt that way. Maybe around her though, he'd eventually catch up. Clearly, Tessa had ideas for him. He'd happily oblige with her ideas. After all, he'd been doing that all along. "Hm," he hummed in thought, debating the answer. Would one answer or another get him in trouble? Suddenly, it felt like he was walking on a tightrope. "Resume? Here I thought, I could bypass all that paperwork. Well, it sounds like the pay rate is good..good benefits too." He explained, giving her another slight nudge. Benefit of being with her, yeah that was pretty good if you asked him. It was as if his ears perked up at her words, had Diego heard her correctly? Hie smile was inevitable, did that mean what he thought it did? He couldn't be sure, so he tried to not read into it too much. A dream come true if she did show him. "You'll show me? I'll hold you to that." Diego didn't know much in this world, but he did know that her hands fit perfectly in his. The walk back to his car was only more amusing, the conversation not ending despite them heading home. In some way, Diego was annoyed with himself for even suggesting ending the night. But, it was the responsible thing to do, and what was he, if not responsible? “Yeah, I guess I’m really not, just a couple years ahead and—” what? Of course. He should’ve known that Tessa would flip the words on him, would eventually get back at him. His eyes widened at the word, icky.“Gross! God, no. I mean you’re younger than me, but not by much.”
The trip home only reminded him that he did the right thing, by telling the truth and not letting his feelings dominate his reactions. Her smile was ever present, playing around with his car radio - no discomfort in sight. And that’s all he wanted. Things to remain the same between them, even with his developing feelings. Diego couldn’t assure it yet, but he was almost 70% certain that if Tessa didn’t feel the same way, he’d be able to react with logic rather than his heart. His heart would have a meltdown, of course, but she didn’t need to know that. Besides, how difficult could it be? Keeping his heart and mind separate was all he did. “Thank you for showing me that spot, it really was beautiful.” All these thoughts were crossing his mind, somehow keeping him focused on his driving. The car was still running, he had no intention of staying longer. Responsibility and all that. Well, he also had work early the next day. He glanced over at her, the corners of his lips turning upward into a wide smile. The squirrels, of course. “You are a terrible influence, you’ll owe me coffee tomorrow morning. I hope you know that,” he teased before nodding enthusiastically. A warmth in his chest spread, content to know that she also didn’t want tonight to end. Maybe it wasn’t just him after all. Parking didn’t take too long, the motivation to spend more time with her was too effective. “What movie are you bullying me into watching today? Let’s hope they didn’t get to your stash too, but if they did then hopefully you have some popcorn.”

"Yes! No... yes? I don't know!" huffed Tessa, rolling her eyes in exasperation, at herself more so rather than at him. Oh was he being serious right now? "I'm pinning what on you? No, actually, don't answer that." She sounded frustrated and maybe she was; he was winding her up, he had to be. At the same time, it was funny. So as serious as she tried to sound, it didn't last. "I am not confused all the time. You're just playing dumb on purpose to get an even bigger reaction from me and now, aren't you?" She managed to stop herself before going on a full-blown tangent which she knew full well he'd probably wind her up even more with his jests and wit. It was one of the many things both she loved and loathed about him. Depending on the situation, depending on the circumstance. "If I had something to throw at you, I would right now. I hope you know that." As much as she got flustered, it was obvious that she was being very unserious about it. Throwing things did happen occasionally... but only soft things. Items she knew wouldn't cause too much damage. Like a pillow. Or something. Maybe she would find something soon enough like... maybe flicking a leaf at him or something. If Diego pushed her to it, she would. They were only poking fun at each other, after all. They both dished it out and could take it. It always comforted her to know they both had that about them, no matter what came next. To be extra childish, she playfully stuck her tongue out at him, as though it complimented her retort perfectly.
Diego's reaction to her little outburst amused Tessa. The corners of her lips twitched upwards as she mirrored his expression - another immature habit she picked up somewhere along the lines, just because she could. "I wasn't yelling," she countered, albeit she was unsure. Her voice had maybe raised a little during that little whatever it was... but yelling? He had to be exaggerating. "I was just...making sure you listened to me," she settled with, lower lip jutting out in a pout as though that would persuade him. Almost scared, though? That tickled her and even though she already replied in her own defense of not yelling, she couldn't resist commenting. "Didn't think you were scared of anything, D. And don't say you're not because you said 'almost'. It still applies. I saw your face." With that, she poked his cheek.
"I did not say that. Now you're trying to put words in my mouth! I know you'll flat-out deny it but we both know the truth here, so don't even start," she retorted, shaking her head at him with yet another laugh. He was a pain in the ass when he wanted to be, wasn't he? Tessa remembered calling him exactly that in one of their arguments time back. All he was doing was looking out for her because she was having a hard time and went radio silent on him, and she didn't want him pushing so called him a pain in the ass. She regretted it as soon as the words came out, especially when she saw his reaction. She meant nothing by it at the time, just a bit frustrated expression of disdain when she wanted to be left alone. But now she was thinking of it... he was her pain in the ass. This time when she thought of him as a pain in the ass but never voiced it because she was nice now, she felt it like a term of endearment and affection. He wouldn't be the same if he didn't push buttons others couldn't, if he couldn't wind her up with the slightest of comments. Yes. Her pain in the ass. She liked the sound of that. Anyway... The digression of thoughts once again. She did consider Diego's question then, knowing full well he was probably trying to tempt her once more...and she was so close. So, so close. She took a deep breath as if buying her more time, rolling her head side to side as she thought of her answer before she looked at him shyly. What was up with her? "What if I said both?" Tessa asked meekly, "Can't it be both?" That being said, she probably (obviously) was at the wanting to stage more so than the wanting to be baited. After all, she wanted their first kiss to be special...not the result of being baited to. Maybe that's what she was waiting for. Hoping the perfect moment hadn't been and gone already. First kiss. God that sounded so dumb, and it made her want to lowkey cringe at her own thoughts. But Tessa was a hopeless romantic at her. Who could blame her?
In all honesty, there was a part of her that remained unconvinced at his confirmation but she decided against pushing him for the answer. Maybe part of her was worried about what the actual answer was. Whether she'd done something...no, she needed to stop. If she did something, he'd tell her. If he could do something so brave like confess his feelings for her then surely anything else was a walk in the park. "Okay." Tessa nodded; his answer was fair. "I'll be as fast as I can, I promise. I'll catch up to you soon."
She shrugged at his observations, smiling to herself. He was cuuuute. Damn it. Get a grip, Tessa. "Maybe I am a little bit. In a good way. I just..." she looked down, a light giggle leaving her knowing how dorky whatever she was about to say would sound. "I always thought I was the romantic one." Basically admitting without explicitly saying that she thought of them as being...well. Whatever. "It's nice to know it's not only me then. Makes it better. I know how silly it sounds, so I'm going to shut up now." She smiled again, nodding her head along as Diego spoke. He had a point. Besides, she never gave him a reason to show her that side of him, she supposed. "Showcase your skills," she repeated, putting a hand over her mouth to conceal the laughter bubbling in her throat. "You make it sound like you're applying for a job. Or taking part in a talent show or something." It was just so...him. She never wanted him to change. Not for her, not for anyone, not for anything. Tessa was about to quiz him on what other occasions meant exactly but it seemed stupid to do so. It was obvious, wasn't it? She was about to tell him that she hoped to see or be part of these other occasions but his comment about dragging him into haunted houses set her off into a fit of laughter, and she playfully swatted his knee. "Oh shut up. Don't use haunted houses as an excuse to not be romantic. You can totally still be romantic, you've just got to be creative! Don't use that as an excuse because you were just a scaredy-cat. You love every minute of it, don't deny it," Tessa quipped, still laughing as she spoke, jabbing his knee once more for emphasis. "And yes, it is a crime! Now we're paying for it by having no chocolates. Damn you, Diego, damn you."
Sighing dramatically, again she knew how right he was. Still, it didn't mean she had to like it. All good things needed to come to an end...but maybe after tonight, as much as it had to come to a close sooner or later, Tessa hoped this was the beginning of something. Something more. Of course, she needed to think about it, just so she was certain it wasn't the heat of the moment kind of deal. It wasn't. She already knew. But she needed to know 100%. "You do sound like an old man... but I think that's just a Diego Personality Trait," she teased with a small smirk forming, standing up slowly and holding out her hands to him so she could pull him up. Though it faded a little as he continued to talk. "You haven't dumped anything on me, Diego," she said softly, looking up at him once he was on his feet. "Telling someone how you feel about them isn't dumping anything on them...but sure. Sounds good to me."
"Now I'm confusing you?" He playfully scoffed at her words, "sounds more like you're pining it on me. Maybe you're always confused." He didn't push his luck tonight. It had already been a big win to event tell her, to put those words out there in the universe. Well, he was doomed. Tessa had begun rubbing off on him with the universe and the ghosts. Diego had told her their dynamic wouldn't change, but he wasn't as certain as he claimed. Part of him worried that there was too much between them, that she was too ingrained in his life to let things go back to normal. It was something that was pushed too deep down to cause trouble right now though, Diego made sure of that. He had already fucked up once by retracting his words. He did wonder why not? They felt the same way, what was the hesitation? Perhaps it was something he could change, something he could to to help ease any hesitation. Diego would like to know if that was the case.
Brows raised at her reaction, half-scared him just how certain she was. How fiercely she denied his conclusion that he was too much. Any doubt he had about regarding his lack of dating went out the window, Tessa scared it all off. “Okay okay, I believe you. I was almost scared you were about to yell at me some more.” He noted her change in tone, speaking a bit quieter and trying to save her reaction. It only worked if he pretended not to notice.
"Shush because it's true? Right," he added with a shake of his head. Her laughter was one of his favorites, the kind that motivated anyone to say more...say anything to hear it once more. Lucky for him too, it was an indicator that things between them were okay. And they could remain that way, as long as he held it all together. There was a moment where things went silent between them, but it didn't feel awkward. At least Diego didn't sense any awkwardness. It was more those silent moments where Tessa's mind was elsewhere. That had been something big for him to adjust to. Diego let the silence reign between them, just taking the time to appreciate the night sky. He knew Tessa would leave her daydreaming eventually. Though, curiosity was piqued. What was running through her mind? Her response was definitely not one he was considering. He only hummed in response, trying to prevent the first thing in his mind to fly out. Probably another comment baiting her. A bad method? Sure. Effective? Probably. And he'd be lying to himself if he said he didn't want to kiss her because Diego wanted to. Really badly. "Hm, well which is it now? Wanting to or falling for the bait?"
He nodded, confirming that he was sure. 100% sure that processing was the lie he was going with. "Yup, completely sure." Little lies don't hurt now and then, at least he thought so. Diego had matured a bit, enough to handle this situation calmly - but not mature enough to be that honest all the time. Besides, that wouldn't be helpful right now. "I guess that's true. I don't know my own time frame yet, I hadn't considered it. Fair thought. My only thing there is..I'd like you to tell me rather than letting time run out and be my answer. Whichever way this goes, if we're leaving it on some imaginary timer to do the work for us....I don't know. But either way, we have a deal."
If Tessa kept a secret list of items she wanted in someone, Diego hoped he was acing the test. At least to a certain extent. He knew it was impossible to check off all the boxes, for anyone. Unless you changed things about yourself to make it fit. And that just wasn't him. He would be willing to open up more about himself, and let their experiences open him up to new things. If change came from that, so be it. He just didn't see himself changing things to fit a perfect list. "I can see that, you sound...very shocked." In a good way or bad way? If Diego knew anything about Tessa, he'd guess 'in a good way.' She was the true romantic between the two, he was a sourball in comparison. Still, he had bits to offer. "Maybe there's a lot you still need to learn about me. It's not secret, well..not really. It is reserved for other occasions though. I don't think you've ever met one of my girlfriends, and my past relationships. We were never serious enough to let me showcase my skills. And with you, well kind of hard to be romantic when you're tossing me in every haunted house that creaks." Diego shrugged, completely amused by the comment. Damn these imaginary squirrels stealing imaginary chocolates. "Honestly, a crime that I hid them, the squirrels definitely took advantage of it."
The suggestion was not his favorite. Frankly, he would've happily stayed here with her until morning, but that wouldn't be responsible. That, and he did half-worry that if he stuck around right now, he'd end up saying something that would make her uncomfortable with everything that was discussed tonight. She needed time, and he needed to provide that with no interruptions. Besides, Diego had his work cut out for him. A lot to consider, a lot to think about. He said so many things, some promises more doable than others. It required a plan. "At the risk of sounding like an old man, it is the smart thing to do. It's been a great night, believe me. If I could guarantee we won't be tired tomorrow, I'd stay here. But, I dumped a lot on you, and you need to rest. I'll drive you home though?"

“Oh? Is that so?” Tessa’s brows raised; interest piqued. Before she knew, she did wonder… well. She felt a bit embarrassed to admit to herself that she’d been curious about his… For fuck sake, Tessa. The girl couldn’t even finish her trail of thought. It was difficult to think about anything really, especially when Diego was looking at her like that. It was distracting. And knowing what she knew now, it changed her outlook on…everything? It felt like he was almost staring into her soul. Her eyes widened a little when he spoke. Not many. She had wondered. Was he now a mind reader, too? “Really?” Her nose wrinkled at the way the word came out almost like a squeak. Why did she have to say it like that? What an idiot. Nevertheless, she managed to laugh it off. “So, only some then?”
How many times had she wondered what Diego was doing when he wasn’t with her? How many times had he been the person she threw the latest conspiracy theories at so they could debate the potential of it? How many times had he sought her out on a bad day, even when she was deliberately trying to stay away from people? And how many times had she done the same for him, upset when he reacted in the exact same way as she did? All this time, she thought it was just a token of friendship but… maybe it was love. Obviously, love could be platonic but… maybe, just maybe – she didn’t know what to make of it all. It was a lot to process, though in reality why was she so surprised? They bickered like an old married couple, and when they were apart, she missed him. Definitely more than anyone else in her life. That should’ve been a sign really.
With his arm around her, Tessa scooted closer to him, a completely natural action. It was always like this with them. She always felt safest when she was curled up against him, in the warmth of his arms. Another glaringly obvious indicator of something beyond friendship, but something that had gone completely over her head all this time. That thought soon faded away when he spoke… She knew what his tone entailed. It was Tease Tessa Time. But she could at least try and get her own back at some point. Still, a quick tilt of her head, a second glance at him told her all she needed to know. And that stupid smirk. Oh, he really was loving this, wasn’t he? And she’d given him all the ammunition he needed. Not that she could help the way her words came out, or the stuttering and stumbling… but it was like that question gave her a sudden sense of bravery, nerves fading out of pure stubbornness… Maybe. Mostly. Sorta. Probably not. “Oh, zip it. You shouldn’t give yourself that much credit – you couldn’t make me nervous even if you tried.” Yet, of course, her voice had betrayed her statements. She tried to withhold the urge to laugh at his retorts, but a giggle slipped. Tessa shook her head and reached up, clamping a hand over his mouth. “I said zip it, didn’t I? Also, if on the off chance you did find something like that, it would mean you have a secret admirer. The handwriting wouldn’t be mine.” The girl quipped with, “Are you going to behave now?” A playful sparkled in her bright eyes, and she removed her hand to let the man speak.
His explanation suited her just fine. Tessa was sure of his honesty. After all, they were being sincere with each other now, why wouldn’t they? What would be the point to not? Besides, everyone said things they didn’t mean all the time. It was obviously a knee jerk reaction in the spur of the moment. She couldn’t hold that against him. Many occasions she stuck her foot in her mouth by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. It was good enough for her. “It happens.”
Another smile etched across her face at his admission. “For what it’s worth, I don’t really know what I’m doing either; it’s been a while,” Tessa replied, hoping it would help Diego feel a little easier about everything. If the two of them were both kind of stumbling around this threshold blindfolded, at least they could do it together. Two heads were always better than one, after all. Especially if one of those heads were his. If she told him that she would joke it would only make his head bigger. But given the weight of their current predicament, she figured it probably wasn’t the best idea right now. “Whatever I’m feeling… right…” Suffice to say, her nerves had returned. She nodded her head slowly, trying to ignore the distraction of her hammering heart in that moment. “One… when have I ever held back?” she said in jest, trying to lighten the mood. “And two… what if I’m still trying to figure it out… what I’m feeling?” Tessa sighed, frustrated that she couldn’t explain herself in the way she wanted to. “It’s just… I don’t want to hurt you… and…” she inhaled shakily, up through her nose, exhaled out of her mouth. Why was this so hard?
Maybe he was right, about taking time. But she felt awful – Diego was there, certain with his feelings for her. And she… she was tangled up in hers, wavering on the line between knowing what she wanted and still unsure. “It’s not that I don’t want to take that step with you…because… because I do,” she explained, hoping that might assure him even if by a small piece. “It’s just… I feel like we have something good. You know? Something special. You are… you are special, to me.” And there she felt herself heating up again, cringing at the way she sounded. “It’s – I can’t help but worry… worry if we… if it doesn’t work out. I don’t want to lose you, D. I would hate to be without you. That, I’m sure of.” But if she didn’t take the leap of faith, if they didn’t at least try… wouldn’t it leave her forever wondering what if? Maybe all this time, they’d been tiptoeing across that line anyway. She had never been afraid of the unknown before. In fact, it excited her. But this… this was different. In a thousand different ways too complex to explain to herself.
However, congenital curiosity roused within her when he mentioned the ‘official question.’ One that she just had to know about… because it was news to her. And partly because she wanted to see his reaction. Would it make him squirm? Or would he be cool as a cucumber? Was that cruel? Probably. But he had teased her not long back… so she could consider it revenge. “What’s the official question? I want to know. You make it sound so formal..”
"You still don't know how many broken hearts I've left back home," he joked. His statement was far from accurate. That didn't mean that he didn't date, but he was selective about who he spent time with. Friends and relationships alike. It made him wonder just how Tessa snuck past his defenses this way. His gaze didn't leave her, taking the time to take a mental photograph - a futile attempt to capture her beauty. He knew he could look at her for hours and still get nowhere. "Not many, in case you were wondering." Maybe she didn't care, but he still felt the need to clear things up. He couldn't have her thinking this was a common occurrence.
Diego wondered if he wasn't obvious enough, if he didn't show her enough love. And if that's why this came as such a surprise. Was he too dry or was she just used to his displays of affection? Did those displays lose their meaning that way? Big displays of affection weren't in his nature, they didn't come naturally to him. Diego's affection was shown through gestures. Showing up with your favorite food or taking the day off work to spend time with you. His hand remained on hers, giving it a light squeeze. It wasn't long before he dropped her hand, opting to place an arm around her. It wasn't weird, he did this all the time. He just hoped that it wouldn't influence her thoughts. Diego wanted to hear that she felt something for him, that they could try something, but he wanted her to be sure. Not feel pressured to say it.
The follow up questions were inevitable. He wanted to be honest with her, but that also meant wanting to know everything. Having the full picture, and there were answers that only she could provide. The way she stumbled over her words and let silence run between them did not go unnoticed. He couldn't help the smirk that tugged at his lips. "Am I making you nervous Tess?" Diego asked, nudging her ever so slightly. "That sounds oddly specific for it to be fake? What if I randomly find a calendar with those exact words?" The blush in her cheeks causing yet another surge of pride. She was too cute for her own good. It was one of the many reasons he fell for her. She could never hide what she was feeling, her facial expressions always giving her away.
"Yeah, it's not much of an explanation other than...I wasn't thinking." Momentarily, he looked away, eyes catching a glimpse of the night sky. Oddly enough, it was providing him a sense of comfort. He understood why this place was so special to her. It made him feel special that she had even shown him. "I'm not trying to defend myself, but I'm very rusty with all of this. I haven't really done a....whole confession thing in years. Don't know if that's better or worse." He was quick to shake his head, not accepting her claim to blame. This wasn't on her at all, Diego hated thinking this was truly how she felt. "No, you don't have any blame here. I was not very gentle with my words. You don't have to say the right thing, just...whatever you're feeling." His heart was beating 100 miles per hour, the warmth in his face spreading further. Diego didn't agree with this 100%, but it was the necessary thing to say. For her sake. "I can take it, don't hold back on my account."
A small sigh fell from his lips, trying to use that moment to think of what to say. How to best say it. Diego didn't really know next steps, it really depended on what she wanted. He was not going to impose his will. "Well, I would love to know your answer and have an idea of where we go from here," he half-joked. Hopefully, there wasn't too much truth in his voice. "But, it is a lot. I think you should take some time, think about it. I'll let you know where I stand. I am willing to try, if you are. There's other feelings there, beyond friendship and I think I've known that for some time now. I understand if you don't want to take that step, and that's okay. Just take some time, I'll respect whatever you decide. We'll go from there. If you decide to jump into this, I'll even ask the official question."

The more she thought about it, the more she noticed how her feelings for him had truly been different than the others. Very rare had she been friends with someone first before dating them. And when Tessa fell for someone, it was usually fast – too fast and all consuming, usually ended disastrously too. Her flaw was she felt too deeply and too quickly, she’d often be told. She could be pretty…intense, when she wanted to be. And she’d worked hard on that. Or guys would think she was just a pretty face, someone to tag along on their arm without making much more of an effort beyond that. For a while, she thought maybe that was it and her expectations had been too high and she should have settled for less. She had grown up a lot since, though, and she knew she deserved something more. But her problem was she had no idea what that looked like. Not in the way she had expected, anyway.
But sometimes… Sometimes the best things in life were the things you least expected. That certainly rang true in their case. In hindsight, she really was an idiot for not noticing sooner. If he was the one person she wanted to be around, to tell things to, to spend time with even if it was doing nothing at all, surely that was a sign of something more than friendship. Before feelings were confessed, Tessa had often wondered how Diego was single. It seemed ridiculous, something that should have been impossible really. He was wonderful in every way – not that she’d always tell him that, because she didn’t need his head to grow any bigger (avoiding being teased on it, more like… but whatever helped her put her own feelings at bay) or have fun poked at her. Though she always secretly loved that, too.
“See what I mean? I told you your jokes are terrible.” Tessa said in jest, nudging him lightly. Even when they were having a serious conversation, it wouldn’t be them without a little jest in between, even if it was there purely to alleviate the tension. It was an opportunity, and she would take it. “We can’t have you breaking the hearts of a nation now, can we?”
There was something so intimate about this conversation, something she wasn’t sure she’d experienced before. A heart to heart, maybe; the whole confessing feelings ordeal was daunting and she hated the way it had made her feel so nervous. She never had reason to feel nervous around him, and she didn’t want to start now. It was just… tricky. Tricky to put her feelings for him into words, especially when she was still trying to figure it out. Tessa noticed the way he had moved closer to her, the sudden desire to feel even closer to him becoming more prominent, a fluttering feeling in her tummy. There was a tenderness in his eyes she hadn’t noticed before, had her looking at him in a different light. And his other hand on top of hers caused the familiar feeling or warmth flood through her.. and yet, at the same time, it wasn’t enough. Tessa wanted more, but she also knew there was no rush; they had all the time in the world, as far as she was concerned. Not only that, but she cared about Diego too much to have them take a nosedive and ruin things before they truly began. And she had wanted her questions answered… after that? After that, who knows what would happen?
Tessa should’ve known that her questions would be met with questions on his part, too. Why did that make her feel more nervous? How long had she really been thinking about this, about them? She gulped as she tried to think, biting on the corner of her cheek in concentration. But truthfully, she didn’t know precisely when the line was crossed. It was a gradual build up, something that was present longer than she had realised. “I… I don’t know…” she admitted sheepishly, shrugging. “Do you think I have a date written in my calendar with the words ‘#HotForDiego Day One’ circled with love hearts and kisses?” She said in jest and yet her own words made her blush even more furiously. The funny thing was, it was probably something she would have done with a crush back in high school or something. The dire thought made her cringe at herself. Wow. How was she supposed to look back at him now? “Yeah, me neither…”
Feeling his hand loosen a little had her feeling like something was missing once again. Such a minuscule movement, but to her she realised it was probably because of her tangent of questions. Caught off guard, perhaps? She wasn’t sure. She dared to steal a glance at him, noticed the way his face was completely flushed and she couldn’t help the little smile. She was probably just as red, if not redder, than him. Listening to every word, she was certain he answered with honesty, nodding her head slowly in the right places. Tessa looked down when he’d mentioned how he first saw her as an annoying little sister; it reminded her of her own sister, the one she’d lost years ago. Tessa wondered what Hayley would’ve thought of all this… She probably would’ve teased her, probably would have gone and told Diego on Tessa’s behalf well before now. An unintentional sigh escaped her lips at her memory, the pangs of missing her sister like an old wound that never fully healed. He was right though. Their dynamics initially did feel like sibling rivalry or some sort… the way they bickered over everything. But he was right, somewhere along the line things had changed and it was quite strange to think that they were on the verge of something more.
Still, she listened as he answered her questions. Appreciative of the way he was honest, didn’t try and change the subject and gave her the answers she’d so desperately wanted. “That’s okay… I just wanted to know, that’s all. I get it.” Her words were earnest, and she peered up at him with sincerity, unable to help the way her body had shuffled that little bit closer to him. She didn’t want him blaming himself for it either. “I could’ve made it easier by stopping you there and then. I could’ve told you how I feel right in that moment… but I guess I was too caught off guard by the sudden change, that I didn’t really know what the right thing to say was…” Even now, Tessa still didn’t really know what the right thing to say. But sometimes the right thing wasn’t even spoken at all. It may have been in the quieter moments, the stolen glances, the closeness between them. “I… so…” A brief pause. “What happens now? What do you think we should do… about… about this? About us?”
The longer the silence went on, the more he wondered if she really didn't know what he meant by his question. Or she was just really good at forgetting their previous conversation? In her defense, he'd also try forgetting that if he could. Diego just couldn't bring himself to put that past him, it was a mistake he had to hold himself accountable for. Still, he had to admit the silence was helpful in its own way. His mind began wandering, was he enough for Tessa? She had always had a...very positive outlook on life, and the way she's described love - it was beyond anything Diego had experienced or provided before. He liked to believe he was a good companion, a good boyfriend but it was no surprise that he's been dumped every single time. If anyone was keeping a record, it wasn't helping him. Did Tessa deserve what he had to offer? Probably not, she could find better anywhere else.
Honestly, he didn't fully understand what possessed him to ask her this question. It could be the place, the beauty of it all, the peace of the surrounding area. Or maybe it was his lingering thoughts, wondering if they had a chance, if he ruined everything. Most likely, it was her. Tessa's rosy cheeks, the way her eyes had shone when the sunset's last rays reached them.
It took everything in him to not roll his eyes once more. Unbelievable of her to avoid answering his questions by bringing up every other thing. Diego was slightly tempted to just change the topic, give her an out. This was not going the way he thought. He turned his head to catch a glimpse of her, and in that moment, all traces of irritation faded. She wasn't doing this on purpose, he could tell. Diego couldn't be annoyed with her, after all, he had sprung a lot on her. Besides, the way she talked about him - when you really listen, it was enough to warm his heart. With every complaint about his bad jokes, Diego heard one more reason he had a chance. "It's not like I joke with everybody about something like this...unless you want me to." One terrible joke on his part to help ease tension. His mouth was beginning to feel dry, the wait was killing him. Was she delaying something? Trying to find a way to let him down easy. Diego would deserve it, though he’d hate it. It could be a sign that it just wasn’t a good idea. It’s what he initially thought, not wanting to make their friendship complicated. He should’ve stuck with that.
Diego leaned in as she took his hand, it was involuntary - he just wanted more of her touch. This was it, could end all his hope or give him a small chance. His lips drawn in a tight line, keeping himself from blurting anything out or saying the wrong thing. That had doomed him once before. And, she was nervous. He couldn't add to that. Her voice was shaky and if he didn't care for the answer, he would've dropped it to keep her from being so jittery. Diego nodded slowly as she spoke. It wasn't precisely the answer he was hoping for, but it wasn't a resounding no. He could work with that. It was more than he deserved. Diego just wasn't sure what to make of her words, she thinks there's more. What kept her from being sure? He listened intently, placing his free hand over hers - trying to provide some kind of comfort.
A small smile escaped him upon noticing the tint in her cheeks. There was a sense of triumph coming over him, the triumph of knowing that she's thought about this before. It wasn't just him. "How long has this been on your mind?" It was only fair that he asked too, each word she uttered presented him 10 more questions. "I...I didn't know. I never realized that this has been around us for so long." It would've been so easy for him to get caught up in his thoughts, but her follow up question stunned him. Now, his face was flushed - down to his ears. Of course that would be brought up. "Right, that occasion." His grip on her hand loosened just slightly. Diego knew it would have consequences, he just hated that it had plagued her thoughts this way. "I...listen, it wasn't you. Or anything about you really. It was more so, my...resolve to not change anything about our friendship. There was a point where I saw you as an annoying little sister, or at least what I understand from it." Diego being an only child, he only had outsider knowledge on siblings and how they got along. His bickering with Tessa resembled that a lot. Going from that view to more than friends was an odd jump to him. "I guess, I just didn't want to make things weird with you. Or make you feel like it's impossible to have a friendship with a guy. I don't know, whatever that's about." He was certain he'd heard that complaint somewhere before. "I thought it was easier to cut it all out. Clearly, I was wrong. All this to say, it was all me. My overthinking got the better of me, and after that day, I heard my own words and how it sounded. It just seemed pointless to clarify."

"It's not an accusation if there is truth to it, Diego!" Or was that allegation? Words were tricky sometimes, what could she say? Whatever. She knew what she meant...and she knew he knew what she meant, which is all that mattered in the end, right? Even if he happened to be endlessly tormenting her about it. Tessa couldn't help but laugh though. She always laughed around him, it was hard not to. Even more so when she knew full well Diego was deliberately winding her up. Another eye roll issued to him, pulling her lower lip in to conceal the smile that threatened to plaster all over her face, attempting to resist the urge to laugh. Attempt being the emphasised word here. "Violence? Never expected you to be such a drama queen," she retorted with gentle sarcasm. "Oh yeah? What would've happened if I hadn't been so lucky then?" As soon as Diego mirrored her expression, she absolutely cracked. How could she not? They were acting like such children. It was funny. And it didn't help that he was stupidly cute either. There was no way she could even pretend to be mad about it - the ending would always result in the same.
Singleness. So, it clearly wasn't just Tessa who found words hard today. Was that a word? In all fairness to him, it could have been. It sounded like one of those words that shouldn't be words but were. He made it difficult not to respond to his silliness with even more silliness. They really did act like children, didn't they? "I wasn't worried," she shot back with ease. His explanation of the word 'almost', funnily enough, almost had her rolling her eyes yet again at Diego. But...there was that look on his face. The way the volume of his voice suddenly lowered to a whisper and he leaned in and Tessa's heart was doing flips, the butterflies in her tummy fluttering around. He was going to be the death of her. Her breath had caught in her throat for a moment, her eyes flickering to his lips in anticipation. Was he going to - and...of course he was doing it to prove a point. The urge to grab his face between her hands, pull him in, and kiss that idiot was so, so tempting. Tessa's resolve was cracking, she could feel it. Still, she exercised restraint, determined not to succumb to his stupid charms. For now, anyway. He made it so difficult. "You're cruel. But okay, point taken," she shook her head with a light laugh, exhaling slowly.
Tessa knew immediately that 'not now' meant probably soon. She knew full well if roles had been reversed she totally would have said something similar. It amazed her, the way how at times they were two completely different people, and yet she always found plenty of similarities between them. It's why they meshed so well. Another time. Damn. It was her own fault though, so she couldn't express slight disappointment. After all, she didn't want to rush into things whilst also giving a potentially different opinion. She wanted to be certain, even if she pretty much already was. Anyway. "Okay then, another time," she repeated, offering him a warm smile.
A laugh escaped her when Diego playfully questioned whether she was worried about him stealing her self-proclaimed title from her; she shook her head in response. "Level 0? No - there's no such level! You've gotta start at Level 1 at least. Even I know that." In response to the makes what better? question, she shrugged, tapping her nose with a gleaming smile that implied 'That's for me to know and you to not find out.' Besides, to answer genuinely would mean to get her more flustered again and set herself up for more teasing off him and more reasons to blush furiously. Childishly, Tessa couldn't help but nudge him back when he nudged her. "Are you? Where's your resume, then? I didn't realise you were applying for a paid position. Is the pay rate any good?" she teased, shaking her head to herself with another quiet laugh. that was one way of putting it. Was it really like applying for a job? She wasn't sure how she felt about that. It felt wrong to her but she didn't know why that was. "Again! I say: be creative. Clearly, you're having a hard time with that. But don't worry - I'll show you." Didn't that confirm everything with her thoughts about them already? His face was a picture when she called him a scaredy-cat, her eyebrows quirked up in silent question: Really? You can't fool me. "Whatever you want to believe..." she said in a sing-song voice. "It's okay. I think I might have some at home actually. One of us has to because clearly, it's not you," she teased, grinning at him as she helped him up. Maybe she held on to his hands a little bit longer than necessary, briefly glancing down at their joined hands before looking back up at him with a smile. "Uh, says who?" Tessa quipped, tilting her head a fraction, a laugh passing from her lips yet again. "You're not that old. How about if I turn it around on you then, huh? Begs the question of whether you're into younger girls. Which sounds a looooot ickier, if you ask me." It never bothered her. Neither of them acted their ages, really. she couldn't help but say it to tease him though. "I would have already combusted if that was the case. Come on, let's get going or else we'll stay here foreverrrr..."
And with that, they were on their way home. It had been a lovely time and Tessa couldn't contain the smile off of her face if she wanted to. They continued to talk about anything and nothing at the same time whilst she fiddled with the music, switching between various radio stations until she found one she liked. Even though they were in Diego's car, not hers. Stealing glances and smiles when she wanted to. Truly, she never wanted the night to end. With what he told her remaining very fresh in her mind, her heart already knew what she wanted but simply needed the time to be sure she wasn't just caught up in the moment. How could she think of anything else? And despite the constant teasing, he really had been so diplomatic about the whole thing which made her appreciation for him only grow that bit stronger. It had been a laugh, nothing made awkward. And even with all of this to process and consider, it still felt like nothing changed between them. Maybe the transition between friendship and more than that would be easy. Her face had ached from all the smiling and laughing, which only further proved how enjoyable the day had been, how being with him had always been. Her thoughts cut off as they finally pulled up outside hers, a sigh escaping her. All good things must come to an end but...they didn't have to come to an end just yet. Unless Diego had other plans that was. "Thank you...for today," Tessa said, turning her head to face him as she unbuckled the seatbelt. "Are you coming in? We could watch a movie and see if I have any chocolate after all? Let's hope the squirrels haven't stolen my stash ."
Amusement remained on his features as she rolled her eyes. The reactions he caused her were simply adorable, no other word could accurately describe it for him. "Are you accusing me of playing dumb? That's rude." He feigned offense, though Tessa had read the situation pretty accurately. He was playing dumb, testing his luck to see how many reactions he could get out of her. Still, it didn't mean he'd admit it to her. It was much more fun to let her wonder. "And now, resorting to violence...woah. I'll pretend you didn't just threaten me, you're lucky I like you." Though, Diego knew that the most she'd toss his way would be a pillow. Nothing that would truly hurt him. All he could do was mirror her, sticking his tongue out as well. If anyone saw them right now, they'd assume two kids were bickering on the playground.
"Not yelling, so just speaking pretty loudly. Hey, no judgement from me. On the contrary, I appreciate you defending my singleness." Was that even a word? If it wasn't, he hoped it at least made sense. "I definitely listened, you don't need to worry about that," he spoke as he turned to look at her. The pout on her lips easing some of the teasing. Maybe, he could pause it for a bit. Very persuasive, and he wondered if she knew that it would work. His head tilted, trying to not roll his eyes at her comment. Of course, she couldn't resist teasing him. He was bound to say something that she could use. "Almost isn't certain, isn't that the whole point of the word?" He said, a small smile on his lips as she poked his cheeks. "If I lean in super..super.." his words began lowering, whispering for dramatic effect as he leaned into her shoulder, laying his head on it momentarily. "..Close to your lips, and I pulled away at the last second. Did we kiss or almost kiss? If it's almost, then it didn't happen." Perhaps, a bit too much to get his point across, but impossible to resist.
"Okay okay, I won't start...for now." Instead, he'd save it for another moment. Catch her off guard, use another occasion to make her laugh or bring that flush to her face when she was flustered. Either reaction was a win in Diego's book. He'd been annoying enough for one day. It was no surprise that she called him a pain in the ass. It'd be a badge he'd wear proudly, with perhaps one exception, but luckily she had not used that tone on him in a while. That one did hurt, though he hadn't mentioned that to her. It was a tough time for her, why add more to it? Maybe one day, he'd tell her that, just to make sure he didn't keep something from her. "Both..yeah," he was pretending to consider. Like a philosopher pondering over the meaning of life. "It can be both, but I'll save that for another time." This wasn't the right time. Not that Diego cared much for 'a right time.' If he could, he'd cup her face in his hands and pull her in, press his lips against hers. Tell her everything he's been keeping hidden. But, he had to keep reminding himself that this was Tessa. And, he promised her time. Most importantly though, she'd probably want something special. Something that would mark the occasion.
Diego was grateful that she didn't question his answer. He wasn't sure he had enough conviction to reaffirm what he'd said earlier. "Thanks, I mean no rush but definitely don't take 10 years. You know, for my sake...I'm also not getting any younger."
Tessa's smile did not go unnoticed, "are you scared I may take your title? Of the romantic one?" It was cute, her surprise at his confession. It was an odd one, but though his efforts could be considered romantic, he wasn't sure he was worthy of the title yet. "You still are, I'm like level 0 compared to you. Makes what better?" He asked curiously. Diego's interest was definitely piqued. He nudged her softly in reaction to her comment, of course she'd tease him about that. But he couldn't blame her, it did sound terrible. He had to get with the times. "Okay we get it, Diego is an old man. But, in my defense, I am sorta applying to a job," he mentioned, nose scrunching up slightly at the thought. "Creative?? While a house is falling apart? You have a very funny definition of romantic if that's the case." He frowned momentarily, scaredy-cat? Diego? Impossible. "I don't get scared when we go to those places!" Unless they counted the time he yelped slightly when a wooden beam fell in the basement. But that'd scare anyone, right? "We can get chocolates on the way home if you want." He took her hands, and helped himself off the ground, tempted to pull her in closer. Though, he opted against it. He was afraid they wouldn’t end up leaving if he listened to his instincts. “The Diego personality traits are the best,” he countered. “But yeah, I won’t deny I am an old man. Begs the question of whether you’re into older guys.” Just teasing again, though it was a fact that he was a bit older. “I guess so. It just feels like throwing a lot of information at you. I wouldn’t want you to combust with all I said.”

"I don't know if expectations is the right word. Maybe? Maybe not?" Tessa said, unsure. What was she even talking about now? Was it just Diego getting her all flustered - not for the first time that night? "I don't know. You're getting me all confused," she said with a light laugh, pointing an accusatory finger at him. Was it sheer, pure luck that everything seemed to have gone well, even if she hadn't given him a proper answer as of yet? He seemed to be taking it all on the chin so perfectly... It made her more hopeful, that no matter how things played out between them, he was right; nothing would have to change too much.
There were so many different ways his confession could have gone. At least, she hoped she handled it in a diplomatic manner, or at the very least, to the best of her ability. It went in the complete opposite direction as before; when he sort of half backtracked on his words... There he was, adamant, certain and their dynamic hadn't changed in the slightest, not really. The teasing banter between the two, that she always loved so much; it was a miracle how easy this all seemed. It made her wonder even more what she was worrying so much about. Obviously, she had feelings there. Why not just act upon them? It made her more frustrated with herself, and yet there she was, still taking her time. Waiting for...something. The right time? Moment? An epiphany? Hearing Diego speak took her out of all thoughts entirely, snapping her head up straight to look at him incredulously. "What?" Tess immediately said out of shock. He's too much of...himself? That simply wasn't true. "Get out of here. Absolutely not! There could never be too much of you!" She shook her head furiously, a stern look on her features, softening seconds later as she realised what she said, the fierceness that had just rippled through her. Even she was surprised at herself. Where did that come from? "I mean..." she quietened then, looking down sheepishly, a nervous laugh escaping her. "Don't say things like that, silly." It may have been said in a joking manner but regardless, she wouldn't have any of it. The last sentence did make her laugh, genuinely laugh. Her eyes focused on the ground still but she couldn't help but steal a glance at him. The way his eyebrows had rose. A subtle challenge, perhaps? A hint? Or maybe that was just his face. Still. "Maybe they should," she remarked, tilting her head slightly. Maybe she should. Maybe she will. One day. Again with the waiting. Ugh.
His retaliation to her response earned another laugh from Tessa. How could they be doing this? Knowing the full gravity of their current predicament, Tessa holding the keys to their future, essentially with her decision still hanging over them. And sure, she may have been caught off guard when he joked about it but only because she still couldn't stop thinking about it... about him. And what it would be like to - and oops, there she goes, daydreaming again. "Haaaaaaa. Very funny. Now shush," she shot back, rolling her eyes playfully. It was amazing how incredibly normal this felt. Their bantering back and forth was always an aspect of their relationship she loved but she was surprised how easily they could just carry on like this. How natural it all was. She considered his next words, her next response to said words. A little back and forth between her head and her heart and before she knew it the words slipped out without realising she'd spoken out loud. "Maybe I can want to and be baited all at the same time." Did that even make sense? She didn't know. Didn't even mean to speak at that point. Didn't want to make things awkward. Her eyes widened at her own remark and she quickly looked away from him, at something, anything in the distance ahead of them.
"Good." Diego was processing? Processing what? She wasn't entirely convinced, nor was she completely unconvinced. Debated between two minds whether to continue to question him on it, whether she'd even like the answer. "Are you sure?" She queried gently, not wanting to push if it really was just a case of processing - after all, he poured his heart out to her with such clarity and certainty, answered every question with honestly. Why would that suddenly change now? And why should she continue to press on? "Yeahhh, that would be fucked up. Hopefully it shouldn't take that long. I mean - if it takes longer than... I don't know your mental time frame but if it feels too long then it probably is. And I guess in that way, you'll have your answer." Was she even making sense? Probably not. "But I promise to try and not let it take that long." and yes, he was a catch but she knew he'd tease her endlessly if she agreed with him on that one. She probably would've normally joked about his head getting potentially too big there but missed the opportunity really. Focused on the more important aspects of the conversation taking place between them. She admired the way he was so... chilled out about everything. Honestly, Tessa thought he was pretty brave for doing so. How much courage it took to confess his feelings, and not be seemingly worried about her reply, about how she felt - regardless of whether she returned his feelings or not. "That sounds fair. Deal."
Tessa grinned at Diego when he self-proclaimed himself as a romantic. If only he knew all the boxes he was ticking in the back of her mind right now. Not that she had boxes to be ticked but generally speaking... "I'm...surprised? This is a new side to you I wasn't expecting to hear about. You think you know someone..." she said in jest. "I'm not gonna lie; I really did never think you were the romantic type. Why so secret, though? I think it's absolutely something to be used accordingly." What else had she yet to discover about him? That very question made her feel more intrigued. More determined to hopefully be able to bring this side out of him. That would be one way of stealing her heart for sure. Though, let's be honest - he already had. Tessa just needed to give herself time to be surely sure. As stupid as that sounded. "Huh. Can't believe you've been hiding chocolates from me. Disgraceful," she scoffed, though the smile on her face betrayed her feigned annoyance. "Definitely out of luck now. The squirrels have probably run off with them by now."
She knew he was right when he suggested they leave soon. Deep down, she didn't want to. Everything about this, them, tonight - it all felt picture perfect. And she didn't want it to end, it felt too premature. But she couldn't deny that there was a part of her starting to feel a bit tired. It had all been a lot to digest. But she wouldn't change it. It had been lovely. Whether it was the setting, the company, or a combo of both. "I know, you're probably right. It's a shame, though. It's been such a nice night...sad it must end at some point or another."
“Hm, so you had higher expectations?” He questioned, completely amused by her current mood. This was going much better than he could’ve expected, not that he planned this at all. But as soon he asked her, do you love me? The possible reactions quickly ran through his mind. Them laughing and joking about everything was not one of those options. Maybe the setting helped. It turns out, it was a pretty magical place. And here Diego thought that she was just saying that like when she mentions a place is haunted. Not super believable, but he’ll tag along anyway.
Whichever way he looked at it, he was lucky. Lucky that things didn’t take a bad turn and they were both just enjoying the night and the laughter. Still he decided to put this all out of his kind. All this thinking of their reactions and what ifs was distracting him. Keeping him from her. It didn’t take him long to find something new to focus on. Her flushed cheeks were easy to spot. Almost like a new shade of red forming on her skin. Unless the moonlight was playing tricks on him. Diego listened to her words as she continued explaining. “I’m too much of…me? Guess that can be a lot for some. I don’t know, guess people just don’t take advantage of my singleness.” More like, he kept things cut and dry with others. Not allowing them the chance to misinterpret anything. He raised an eyebrow, almost nudging Tessa. As if to question, why don’t you take advantage of my singleness?
The kissing comment stunned her, didn’t it? It partly surprised him as well, why would he even say such a thing? Creep alert! Diego was ready to backtrack, tell her to ignore the comment or maybe follow up with another joke. It was meant as a joke, one he clearly didn’t think about. He’d be lying if he said the thought didn’t cross his mind though. Her soft, pink lips. Okay, so maybe it was more than a joke and he did want to kiss her. But, there was a lot happening and adding more complicated layers didn’t seem right. Not when she wasn’t even sure of her feelings. He’d have to cut it out. Diego only chuckled at her comment, “you’re not down Tess.” Following up on the joke was the right move. For someone who just confessed his feelings, Diego had no trace of nervousness. Unlike Tessa. He wondered for a second, but it was fairly obvious. He had already gone all in, the ball was in her court. It definitely listed an odd weight off his shoulders. “Kidding, it was a dumb joke. Don’t worry, I’m not baiting you to kiss me. If you ever do, I want you to do it all on your own. Because you want to.”
A sympathetic smile formed, “nope. Nothing wrong with being rusty or out of the game.” Damn, so she noticed his expression change. It had only been a second, but it was quick enough for her. “Nothing you need to worry about, I’m just processing.” Why was she questioning his feelings changing so quickly? Diego wondered what her idea of love was, what understanding did she have on feelings that she thought it was possible? “Well, I don’t think you’ll figure it out overnight. I’m a catch, but I’m sure there’s other things to consider.” He continued with the jokes, a way to ease her mind. Ease her worries, clearly there was a lot running around in her mind. “When you finally figure it out, I’ll be waiting. I hope it’s some reasonable time frame. Unless it’s something like 20 years, though it’d be kind of fucked up to leave me hanging for that king. At that point, just let me down gently?” It was a fair request. “Fair or not fair, I’m signing up for this. Aren’t I? If we don’t do this after all, then…give me some time. Just some time to move on, get used to the idea, and then we’ll be back to usual business.” His words were so certain, he was believing them himself. And honestly? He was a bit shocked by his own maturity. Guess that’s growing up.
Was that too cheesy? It was one of the weirder things he did, even if it had been a while since he bought a box of chocolates. His dates just never seemed to reach that point, which was fine. Diego always swore that he was simply too busy for all that stuff anyway. His job was chaotic, it was probably for the best. In some ways, being this honest with Tessa was odd. It was ignoring everything that would complicate it for them, wanting to go for it anyway. He’d say delusional, but she’d probably disagree. The stars aligned or something? Well, if she felt the same. Diego hummed amused, “hm don’t look to me to restore your faith in humanity, but I suppose this one is okay. What can I say, I’m a secret romantic.” Yet another question he wasn’t expecting, but it was fair game. “Maybe so,” he replied, glancing down at her to try catching a glimpse of her face. “I came by earlier and stashed the chocolates in the tree. But, they are reserved for that occasion..so I think we’re out of luck.” He offered a smile, pretty content with himself. This honestly could’ve been a disaster. All the ingredients were there, but they somehow managed. Frankly, it was impressive. Diego wondered if staying out later would tempt fate, to fuck it all up. He hoped not.
“It’s getting pretty late, I should probably get you home soon.”

"Heh... maybe I am," Tessa admitted sheepishly, cringing inwardly at herself. "I don't know what I was expecting. Erm, just... something, higher... maybe?" Here we go again with the nerves. She felt like a right dumbass for even trying to explain herself. "Kinda just hm.. how do I put this right, um -" Shaking her head at herself, she let out a hesitant laugh. "Not that I thought you were a player or anything like that! Because I know you're not. But... well. I mean -" A fresh wave of heat warmed her cheeks once more. She truly would not win today. Every time she thought she couldn't get any redder, she proved herself wrong again and again and again. "You're... well... you're you... So..." Tess knew what she was trying to say. But finding the right words to explain it proved more difficult than anything. Words she wouldn't dream to say out loud. Such as: 'a handsome, very attractive man such as yourself should attract a lot of attention, I would've thought'. She could imagine what Diego's face would have been like if she had said that aloud. The relentless teasing and all. But no, she refused to let him have the satisfaction of that. Not when she was already flustered enough as it was. Since when did he have such an effect on her? "Why would I be worried?"
She rolled her eyes at Diego's retorts, unable to wipe that smile off her face. She couldn't even find it in her to pretend to be serious with him. Even when, essentially, he was calling her a liar. Jokingly, obviously. There really was just something about him, something about tonight, this moment... It was pure. Magical... In her idealistic little head, like the stars had aligned or some cringy shit like that. Because of course, Tessa believed in that sort of stuff. In everything, really. It made life that little more exciting. What's the point if you don't believe in the impossible? How mundane other's lives must be, to not even try and believe. Or belittle those who did believe all because they weren't open-minded enough to try. She never felt like that around Diego, thankfully. Sure, he may not share the same beliefs as her... but he was always respectful of them, of her. And she did try to be persuasive, and he was always willing to take the chance.
Then he had to bring up kissing. Which, naturally, had Tessa thinking about what it would be like to do that. To...to kiss him. Sure, the fleeting thought had come up a few times over the course of their friendship but... Things were different now. They were seeing each other in a new light... That didn't sound right. It wasn't new... but it was their first time properly sharing said feelings. Instinctively, her gaze drifted to his lips as her mind drifted back and forth between the temptation. That wouldn't be fair on him if she did, would it? Not when she hadn't given him a definite answer as of yet. The anticipation made her heart flutter, she couldn't deny. And she did wonder...It was plaguing her thoughts for a little moment there, biting her lower lip like it would enable her to hold back. "Oh, now there's a thought," Tessa finally said after a moment, her eyes meeting his once again. "Careful, Diego. It sounds like you want me to. Like... like you're lowkey baiting me to. Like a.. a challenge, or something." She couldn't take the jittery waver out of her voice as she spoke, almost quietly. Like she was torn between wanting to just go for it, or secretly hoping that he would... It wouldn't be fair on him, she kept telling herself.
Tessa nodded her head with a warm smile when Diego settled with the idea of their 'rustiness' with heartwarming rather than concern. "Okay then. That makes two of us. I don't think it should be concerning. I mean - there is nothing wrong with being rusty, is there? Only get concerned if the rust gets rustier..." she trailed off, a questioning look painted on her features as though she was saying 'what the hell am I talking about?' without explicitly stating the words verbally. The way his demeanor changed ever so slightly did not go unnoticed. A small frown etched on her face, she tilted her head a fraction, studying his expression. Was it something she said? "Everything okay?" She couldn't help but ask, unable to shake off the feeling that he wasn't particularly pleased with what she said. His reassurances meant a lot to her. Made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside. And still..."You don't know they won't. They might do," Tess pointed out in response to him saying his feelings for her wouldn't fade overnight. "What if I finally figure it out - and it takes me too long and by then you've moved on? These things do happen. Besides, it wouldn't be fair to you to keep you waiting. Especially if in the end..." she trailed off, not wanting to say the words 'if we don't do this after all.' And yet he remained adamant and sure that no matter what happened, they wouldn't lose their friendship. It was delightful to hear, the way he seemed so sure of it had her believing in it too, believing in his every word.
"Okay. If you're sure. No losses. That's good." She said, nodding her head with conviction like she was affirming it to herself. Normally she'd have made a joke about how she always got sick of him, but never long enough for it to be permanent. It didn't seem right. Not in a moment like this. If she decided to be no more than just friends, though. Could they ever truly go back to that? Could she do that? Knowing what she knew now... knowing that there is that part of her knowing that there was something there but never giving it a chance to fruition because she was scared? It was all too confusing. Why couldn't she just tell him, yes. Yes. Yes yes yes. There and then. She wished it was so easy. She didn't want to tell him yes and then backpedal on it after. Too much could go wrong... and promises of it not changing anything in the longrun are different to it actually happening. Why was she so indecisive?
The way Diego answered her question made her laugh. Again with a witty remark. Half a shrug rolled from her shoulders. "Maybe I did." It wasn't a lie...albeit with that confession in the open, it didn't necessarily mean she knew her answer. Which again, seemed very unfair to him. Her brows rose as he started to explain the question. Here she was, seeing yet another side of him. She thought it was adorable. People actually used to do that? Heck, younger Tessa would've loved that. How could someone say no to a gesture that was so cute? It was such a simple thing, yet something that continued to warm her tender heart. She was willing to bet that actually worked, too. Hearing him say it was endearing, and her smile stretched further. "That's so sweet. There is nothing wrong with old-fashioned..." she assured, pushing some of her hair behind her ear. "Just goes to show chivalry is not completely dead yet. You're restoring my faith in humanity, D." Turned out the more she learned from him, the more she was beginning to realise just how much she had missed out on. The little things to make someone feel special... She would've done anything for that. "Since you said you um, were willing to ask 'the' question... Does that mean you're also hiding some chocolates, somewhere?" Tess teased...mostly. It was cute; he was cute.
"You sound pleased with my confession." He pointed out, a chuckle slipping past him. Okay, maybe this was amusing. "Were you expecting a higher number?" Diego did wonder if this was something important to her, a dealbreaker of sorts. Had he ever come across as a heartbreaker? "Only some," Diego reiterated. "So, nothing for you to worry about." And of that, he was certain. He did know he wouldn't be bringing up something like this if he was tied up elsewhere.
His smile was inevitable as she moved closer to him. At least that was still intact for them. Diego couldn't be sure yet, there were still so many unknown variables, but this helped him believe that they'd be okay. No matter where things ended up for them. It was his biggest hope, now that everything had been placed out there. Getting rejected would be rough, sure...but losing a friend like her - losing his go-to person? That would hurt him more than he wanted to think of. He was willing to bargain with her, anything in order to keep their friendship. Though, he selfishly hoped it wouldn't come to that.
Confirmed, yes - he was loving this. Diego was loving every second of this. Her stuttering over her words, the flush in her cheeks, the stolen glances in between. It was quickly becoming his favorite language to decipher. "Hm," a hum came from his chest, pretending to consider her words. Nope. "That's not what it sounds like Tess...but sure, whatever you say." Hearing her giggle made his heart skip a beat, Diego was certain. Still, it didn't prepare him to reach up and cover his mouth. Clever way to prevent him from speaking his truth! A secret admirer, is that what she was calling herself now? He playfully rolled his eyes at the explanation, sure. Whatever she needed to tell herself. To her next question, Diego raised his hands in the air - as if caught red-handed, and nodded yes. "Geez Tess, didn't know you'd go to those lengths to shut me up. Kissing is a lot more effective, you know." He joked, gaze falling on her once more. It was a joke, unless she felt differently.
Diego was a bit surprised she accepted his reasoning, didn't ask more about it. Believing he was an idiot was probably not that difficult, huh? "Well, not sure if it's heartwarming that we're both rusty...or concerning. I'll believe in heartwarming though, just for our sake." At least they were both on the same level of experience here. Maybe it made the conversation easier. "Well, I'm hoping that's the attitude you keep. Not holding back and such." Brows furrowed at the second question. She was still trying to figure it out? Well, that was not where he expected this went. Diego thought this was more of a yes/no deal. He cleared his throat, regaining any composure lost. "Well...you need to take time to figure out what you're feeling." That's where this was going, the usual - don't want to hurt you portion. "Hey," he spoke softly, gently squeezing her frame. "I'm serious. It sounds like there's a lot going in your mind. I don't want you to feel pressured to answer right this second. This isn't a limited-time offer or something of the sort. My feelings won't expire tomorrow." That much he was certain of.
The idea of waiting scared him a bit, Diego had to admit. His feelings wouldn't change, he knew that, but the possibility that she decides otherwise left him a bit nervous. Waiting didn't guarantee she'd reach him where he was. Giving her time was the right thing to do though. It was a fair ask. If his life wasn't so rigid, black and white, he'd probably need time too. "Against my better judgement, I'm reiterating. Think about it. I'll answer what I can, like...the fact that you're special to me too and I can't afford to lose you. I can remind you that no matter how this ends, i'll be there. We were friends first, right? I'll be around until you get sick of me. But, I'll also say that it's okay, if you just want to be friends. We don't risk anything, no loss."
Tessa's follow up question surprised him, but only for a moment. She asked out of curiosity, that was all. He had to remind himself of that, at least until their situation was defined. Was she asking to catch a reaction from him? The smirk once again making an appearance, "got excited there for a second, thought you wanted me to present the question to you." He half-joked. "The official question, well you know...like those school yard confessions. You bring the box of chocolates, guide them to a corner of the playground, and officially ask, will you be my girlfriend?" This sounded a lot better in his head, explaining this was a bit embarrassing the more he thought about it. "Hey, it was very formal back when I was in school. I don't know why, girls loved it. Maybe it was because the question was asked. Anyways, little Diego kept the tradition alive, so yep, the official question. Perhaps a little old-fashioned though."

Up until now, Tessa enjoyed how they hadn’t yet resorted to their usual tit-for-tat, winding each other up, back and forth teasing. Though she secretly loved it – it was their ‘thing’ after all – it was nice to just enjoy and embrace each other’s company without getting under each other’s skin. Not that it ever affected their relationship, that is. There were a few instances that had one of them took a step too far, leaving the other to sulk for a few minutes, hours, or sometimes days depending on the mood or severity. But that was because they were as stubborn as each other, and though they were two different people, it was like they were somehow the same. Now? she would have done anything to have that back than having to talk about this… whatever this was. One thing was for sure, Tessa could not stand the tension that now lingered in the atmosphere, despised the heaviness of it between them. Wished it was all so much simpler. That they could go back to bickering and annoying the hell out of each other with no consequences.
She should have known, sooner or later, this day would come. But she thought she would have more time, especially with how last time this went. Tessa couldn’t shake it out of her mind, the way the words stung her but she never even had a chance to process it properly or address it. The words had never escaped her, and she’d been left reeling ever since. Up until now, that is. By now, she should have had enough time to contemplate her feelings for Diego, and no matter how long and hard she’d thought about it, so many nights laid in bed unable to sleep because she couldn’t stop thinking of him and what he’d told her.
You know what I mean. Maybe she did. Maybe she didn’t… didn’t want to know what he meant. There was so much that could go wrong if it didn’t work – was it worth putting their friendship on the line? She cared so much about him, Tess would hate to lose him… But on the other hand, she was equally terrified of still losing him anyway if she broke his heart. Was it love? Again, her ideas of romance was usually unrealistic, she’d been told by plenty of other people. Idealistic. Fairytale-esque. The type that only happens in stories or in movies. The more she dwelled on it, though, the more she realised this: the way they were, always bickering amongst themselves yet cared about each other with an undying ferocity that would put other friendships to shame. How they had tried to discuss their feelings before – well, Diego did briefly before the whole ordeal went to shit – and how they were here in this picturesque moment, conversational topics aside… It almost felt like she was in a rom-com and they were the main characters.
Maybe that was it? Was that the sign she needed? Whenever she was in trouble, she wanted to confide in him. Whenever she was upset and having a bad day, even if she tried to warn him away from her, he was still there (and she wanted him to be, obviously). When she had a good day, she wanted him to be part of it. If she needed a film plot explained to her, she would rather ask him than conduct a simple internet search. Was it love? Tessa sighed. How was she supposed to know when she didn’t even fully understand her own feelings?
Regretting moving away from him the minute she did leave her feeling like something was missing. She couldn’t keep still, hands delicately tracing the edge of the blanket as she wished she was touching him again, instead. Tess scrambled for all the words she longed to tell him, even if she did not quite understand them whilst still listened to him carefully, tentatively, like if she missed any part of what he had to say then she would ruin it all.
His acceptance of friendship caused her to hesitantly raise her head, to steal a glance in his direction. It took her a moment or so, but she just managed to catch him rolling his eyes at her reply. A mixture of frustration and vulnerability in his voice as he challenged the notion of a jest caused her heart to ache, pangs coursing through her. She wanted to reach out, to apologise… but for what?
“I don’t know,” she admitted with a feeble shrug, averting her gaze towards the scene before them instead. “But, I mean… your jokes are the literal worst, so it’s not that much of a stretch…” she trailed off with a hint of a laugh, half a smile gracing her lips in an attempt to alleviate the heavy weight permeating the environment. The laughter faded naturally after he continued to speak, her heart racing a mile a minute as she once again tried to consider his question. With a billion and one thoughts speeding through her already frazzled mind, how was she supposed to come up with a reasonable response?
“Any other feelings for you?” Tessa echoed the question, her tongue darting out to wet her lips as she contemplated an answer. “Yes… I mean, sometimes, you can be a right pain in my ass. Those feelings are strong, you know –” she joked (mostly) then, a nervous glance at him but her face softened as her eyes locked on to his, a cascade of emotions washing through her. Diego really was serious, wasn’t he? Tentatively, she reached over for his hand, both of her hands clasped over it. She looked down at their hands, mindlessly stroking her thumb against his hand as she tried her best not to let her own emotions completely overwhelm her.
“I – yes. I think I do.” Her voice trembled with each word, exhaling shakily as she admitted it. It wasn’t as profound as a full-on ‘I love you’ – but in her defense, the first time it was brought up – he told her he’d liked her. Like and love are two different things… that’s what she told herself. It was a start. Other feelings. That she could do for now. For now, she hoped it was enough. Curiosity got the better of her thought, and naturally, she had to ask. “I believe there is something between us that goes beyond friendship. I’ve spent a lot of time wondering about the possibility of… of us. But..” Feeling the heat rush to her cheeks, she looked down sheepishly. Thank god for the dark of the night. “When you said…the first time… that you’d rather not like me. Why did you?” She hated how vulnerable she sounded, the way her voice shook. But like him, she needed her answers, the peace of mind. “I spent so many nights after that, replaying what you said over and over. Wondering… what it would be like… but also wondering why you’d say something like that. Whether it was just – whether you felt like that in the spur of the moment, whether you’d changed your mind in an instant, whether I’d done something wrong to make you feel like I –” The words came out fast, rendering her breathless by the end. The more she spoke, the more she wished she hadn’t. By the end, she was quiet, feeling stupid for confessing to that conversation playing on her mind ever since. Her heart was racing a hundred miles a minute, craving answers almost as much as she craved being closer to him again now feelings were out in the open.
continued from here // @cursivebloodlines
Getting a call from Tessa usually meant there was a plan in progress. Diego knew he had to prepare for some last minute adventure. He may not tell her, but he had learned to love that about her. He was almost certain that, without her, he would rarely leave the house. That's how he ended up here, still in his work suit - rushing to catch the sunset at this view she swore was the best of the city. He didn't fight her on that statement, at least not yet. Diego had a few spots of his own, though now, he wasn't too sure if they rivaled this one. Besides, it was also a plus that she even chose to show him this place.
Diego laid next to her, tossing his backpack to the side and allowing himself to be captivated by this. The view, the company, and just...the day. It was all mesmerizing, though it also helped that they had not started bickering about their latest disagreement. It was inevitable, a matter of time before one of them said the wrong thing. It was always easy for him to talk back or take her sass, probably because Diego knew that they were close at the end of the day. That, this was their way of communicating and despite it all, they really care about each other. The idea of caring about each other had been on his mind lately. Taking over all his thoughts. Once, he had told her the wrong thing. The right thing to shoot all hope down, but the wrong thing for him and what he truly wanted. It was easier to believe that things were less messy that way, that they couldn't handle an extra layer of chaos now. Still, the question wouldn't leave his mind. Do you love me? A hint of regret immediately made its presence known. Why poke the bear when he had already shot it all down? He couldn't answer that.
As the night took over, Diego was grateful for the darkness. It helped hide some of his embarrassment for asking. He didn't dare look over, the question filling the air and his gaze on the sky. Anyone would guess he asked the stars if they loved him, but Tess knew otherwise. Diego knew. He continued looking up, the words quickly leaving his mouth. "You know what I mean..." Why were they pretending otherwise?
Finally, he turned over to see her. Maybe her face said what she was delaying. Diego liked to believe he could read faces pretty well, it came with the job after all. His eyes closed slowly upon feeling her touch, he didn't fight it or question it. He didn't want to say anything to scare her off. Diego felt her closer, the way her skin brushed against his. He almost wondered if this was his answer, if that's all he needed to know. Would he be content with that? With the in between? In that moment, he answered his own questions. Yes and yes. He could live with whatever she was willing to give him. Anything her generosity could offer.
But, no. Eventually, he would want more. All or nothing. He wanted to be the guy that could be satisfied with crumbs, with bits of love, but that wasn't him. He needed to know that he had earned someone's love, that he could give his love freely without fear that one day it'd be too much. But maybe for her...maybe he could pretend to be satisfied with pieces.
He followed her lead, sitting up on the blanket. The moment was over, the area her fingertips touched now felt cold. Empty. Diego shook his head slowly, knowing this answer all too well. As friends, of course. It felt like an easy let down. Though, maybe he deserved it. He studied her face, the way her eyes missed his, the way she had shifted closer to him, but now moved slightly back when she sat up. Impossible to read. All he did read was that she was nervous. "Friends, that I understand." Inevitably, he rolled his eyes at her last remark. Did she really think he'd joke about this? "Why would I be joking about this? It's a terrible joke." A hand ran through his hair, a deep breath falling from his lips. "I don't mean as friends. I have been thinking a lot about us. I know our last conversation...it was bad. Consider this a redo. Do you have..other feelings for me?"
