Mushy May Day 11

Prompt: First I love you / Unspoken I love you. Rating: Teen Pairing: Aether/Swiss & Past Aether/Terzo Featuring: Angst. Grieving. Nightmares. Longing. Grief does weird things to people (and ghouls). Comfort. Quintessence. Word Count: 950+ Read under the cut, or on AO3.

Love is an easy thing with them. The pack is full of it. Casual I love yous thrown over shoulders. The press of thumbs over knuckles, the slide of fingers together. They all fit together. Bonded by experience, by undeniable kinship.

Aether feels it. Feels the swell of love, the burn of it in his chest. And he thinks about saying it back when Cumulus calls it to him. Thinks about whispering it in Dew’s ear when they’re curled up together. Thinks about letting those words fall off of his tongue again.

It’s been…he could pretend he doesn’t know. He could just say it’s been a while. It’s been almost a year. He can pretend that he doesn’t know this down to the day—the minute almost.

He wonders if Dew and Mountain have noticed. He’d be stupid to think they haven’t. He used to whisper it to their skin without thought. Easy to mouth the words against the hollow of Mountain’s hip. To gift it to them so freely. It feels impossible now. Weighted with grief.

There are moments it bubbles up in his throat. Mostly with Dew and Mountain. Familiar. Part of his old pack. Ghouls who know how he used to be. Ones he knows inside and out. He almost says it when he drags his fingers over the scars where Dew’s fins and gills used to be. But instead he calls him pretty, presses his lips to those places, offers up affection in devotion instead of words that don’t mean anything, but somehow mean everything.

He doesn’t think about it. Or, he tells himself he doesn’t think about it. That he doesn’t remember it when he’s laying alone in his bed. That he doesn’t think about it when Rain presses his lips to Aether’s temple and whispers it.

He thinks about him all the time. Those thoughts feel like contraband in an Abbey that has forgotten him. In the middle of pack where more than half of them never met him. He’s a ghost shared by Dew, and Mountain, and Aether. And Dew and Mountain never talk about him. They talk about Ifrit and Zephyr and Mist sometimes. Fondly. Tinged with lingering grief. But no one says Terzo’s name. A silent, oppressive, ghost that haunts their every move.

Aether can’t outrun him. Doesn’t want to. He plays that moment over in his head on a loop. Terzo’s hand scratching through Aether’s hair. Aether’s head pressed against his bare chest. Skin sticky with sweat. Terzo’s heart was hammering, breath still stuttering. He’d laughed, raspy and bright.

I think I love you. He’d said like a revelation.

Aether’d looked up at him. Violet eyes gone wide. Really?

Yeah. Terzo’d nodded, smiling down at Aether, face as open as he’d ever seen it, affection obvious. I do.

Good. Aether’d growled. Surging up to pull Terzo into a claiming kiss. I know I love you.

Aether dreams about it. Wakes from the dreams gasping just as it all starts to go wrong. Just when Aether is stumbling into Terzo’s room the next day to find him sprawled on the floor, cold, stiff. Gone. Aether can’t escape it. Even now. When Swiss is curled around him, purring deeply. He’s awake, dragged there by Terzo’s ghost. An insistent reminder of the last time he let those words fall from his lips. He knows it’s stupid. Saying them again doesn’t change anything. Not saying them doesn’t make Terzo less dead.

Swiss grumbles as Aether moves, fingers tightening against his side. The purr cuts off. Aether feels a wave of guilt.

“Sorry,” he whispers into the dark. Swiss nuzzles his face into Aether’s neck. “’s fine.”

“Go back to sleep.” Aether reaches up to sink his fingers into Swiss’ curls, to pet against his scalp. Swiss sighs, sinks deeper into Aether’s hold.

“You ok?”

Aether can’t talk about it. Maybe someday, maybe in the daylight. But not now. Not like this. But he doesn’t want to lie either. He opts for a shrug.

“Bad dream?”

“Sort of. Memories mostly.”

Swiss hums like he understands. “Want help getting back to sleep?”

“What?”

“I know I don’t advertise like you do, but I’ve got some tricks.”  Swiss picks up one of his hands to waggle his fingers in front of Aether’s face. Aether can feel him smiling against his neck.

Aether knew about Swiss’ quintessence since the moment he was summoned. Like calls to like. He could feel it. But Aether’s never seen him use it. He’s watched Swiss set fire to plenty of things. Watched him turn into shadow at a moments notice. He’s seen him do a hundred incredible things with his mixed powers. But never soothe a headache, or dig into someone’s brain and put them on their knees.

“I’ll be gentle,” Swiss promises.

“Do you know what you’re doing?”

Swiss rolls his eyes. He presses his hand against Aether’s neck, and Aether feels the familiar cold of quintessence slip through his skin. Swiss is gentle. Aether can feel the way he prods at the anxiety knotting in Aether’s brain, at the tension in his shoulders, gentle tendrils easing him toward relaxation. Aether sags against the bed, eyes slipping closed as Swiss works. Mental energy finding knots and untying them. Pulling him toward boneless. When he’s done, Aether’s the one purring, a raspy rumble. Swiss kisses his temple, laughing softly as he does. “Better.”

Aether pulls Swiss closer, gluing their bodies together as tight as he can. “You should advertise.”

“Dew would never let me up if I did.” Swiss settles his face back into the crook of Aether’s neck. “Glad I could help.”

“Swiss,” Aether says, voice quiet. He’s floating, adrift on warmth and love and the high of quintessence. The words are right here, so easy.

“Hmm?”

“I—”

“I know,” Swiss cuts him off. Aether’s immediately grateful for it. “I love you too.”

Remember how I said I couldn't stop thinking about Ghouls? yeah LOL. Anyways, I finally finished my "Ghoul Guide" which is a comic featuring made up lore about summoning nameless ghouls as well as things about them and their roles!

this by no means is comprehensive of everything I've made up for them, but I'm testing the waters with this comic! if it gets enough love I'll make an additional comic about ghoul origins, element types, and maybe even design non-assigned ghoul outfits for each era costume hehe.

A rite of passage for becoming “Papa”, It starts with a will and your judgement

A specialized chamber is necessary, 1) to avoid interference 2) to prevent escape.

After all; feral ghouls are raw elements, And to survive, one must tame them.

Each element has a diversity of strengths and rarity / and the first ghoul summoned sets precedent for how a leader is perceived.

Additionally, the first is the personal servant and an important assistant for life; Often times assistance is needed for future summoning, but a limit of 2 maintains respect to show you’re still capable.

However, they must accept you- you must earn their respect, and they only choose if willing. And they are not always willing.

One must be prepared to face Hell itself. To prove one is worthy to take the stage, controlling the devil’s magic is key.

It’s important to roll the dice and summon a variety, but one may only tame as many as the power of their sin allows, which, naturally, varies.

And while they’re loyal as determined by one’s rank… / Remember: The ministry comes first.

Hello Ghesties, Ghouls & Ghoulettes! Welcome to Angels run-down show-down, where I (Angel) do a run down of the Ghovie for all you lovely folk!!

Didn’t get the chance to see the Ghovie aka Rite Here Rite Now? Fear not for I am here! This post will contain a run-down of what happened during the Ghovie.

So this is your warning:

‼️SPOILERS AHEAD ‼️

I will be breaking this down into separate parts:

Lore: contains all lore that was mentioned

Songs: songs that were played

And Theatrics: stage play and other attributes that happened.

Another fair warning: there is a possibility that not everything that happened in the movie is noted here, I may have forgotten some things!! But I will do my best to include everything🤍

Additional notes: many fans including me were worried that this project would be incredibly low quality due to the fact it’s a movie operated by a band. More so worried that the movie would be the same quality as the YouTube episodes. I can confirm that the camera quality for this movie is amazing. You can compare the filmography to Taylor swifts era tour movie. Each shot for rite here rite now is shot with a high-to-low speed motion camera. The audio quality is above and beyond, even nihils ghost is very detailed and realistic. Every film shot is synchronized with the songs and instruments (example: camera changes for each beat/camera focuses on certain ghouls for their assigned solo)

Lore:

Story: the plot of the ghovie is a showcase of their Kia forum concert mixed with short lore scenes. Between every 2-3 songs there would be a scene of Copia running behind stage and talking with imperator and nihil OR getting dressed and ready for his next performance.

When he talked with imperator and nihil, he mostly talked to them about what would happen after the concert. Nihil and imperator told him numerous times that he was “focusing to much on the past and future instead of living in the moment, living right here, right now.”

Copia realizes this before he does his encore, so he goes out and does a great encore assuming he’ll soon die. After the encore and when the concert is finished, unfortunately imperator dies and gives a note to Copia.

The note states that he will not die, but rather be gifted a new higher status in the clergy. In which he’ll further be known as Frater (Latin for brother, which makes sense if we think about the title for sister imperator). And because there is no head for the ghost project they will bring in a new front man. The movie ends before the front man is revealed and we are left on a cliffhanger.

The lore for the ghovie is very similar and the same to what we already know! Not to much was revealed but here were the key points of what was mentioned:

⭐️the other brothers were not directly mentioned or shown on camera. The only references to the other emeritus brothers was the backdrop for the stage (stained glass windows portraying the previous brothers & nihil)

⭐️it was confirmed that Nihil was copias father and that during the kiss the go-goat music video sister imperator was pregnant with Copia.

⭐️Copia even acknowledges nihil as his dad, in one scene where he says “thanks dad”

⭐️sister imperator ends up passing at the end of the movie but becomes a spirit and is seen with the rest of the spirits (nihil and the twins, yes, the twins seem in the YouTube episodes apparently have died)

⭐️the ghouls were not to involved with the lore except for the fact they all surrounded imperators dead body when she passed. (Idk if this counts as lore but) the ghouls also talked in the movie, only for a small scene though. Bass ghoul (Rain) is the ghoul that talked.

⭐️nihil says that he produced three songs. The third song is the one we see during the credits. Song is : the future is a foreign land, as shown here:

⚡️miasma (nihil told Copia that he didn’t want to die, but even when he did he was still happy because he got to perform and bring joy to people temporarily when they revived him. Nihil also told Copia to focus on the good in life)

⚡️ mummy dust

⚡️respite on the spitalfields (each ghoul/ghoulette got a solo)

⚡️dance macabre (skeleton dancers come out for a second time with silk fans)

THEATRICS:

Some silly theatrics that happened include:

💙Copia huffing the gas from a whip-cream can before performing.

💙jumped in a storage transfer crate and had a whole convo with nihil.

💙has a the tour manager (Ashley) come out on stage and change his shoes for him.

💙only Copia can see the spirits of his family, so when he would talk to nihil or imperator, spectators around him would think he’s crazy and talking to himself.

💙many of the behind the scenes crew of the band were included in the movie such as : Ashley(tour manager), and many of the security guards & jesus( you know who lol)

💙remember when everyone was freaking out about the fact there’d be a blowjob reference? Yeah well there was no actual blow job scene, the warning for the blow job was for when Kyle aka Jesus came out and blew away the confetti.

💙there is also a scene at the end in which Copia is flying away from the concert (I guess that’s his preferred way of transportation lol??) he is flying in the hot air balloon we see in the cover for rite here rite now. He flies into space before falling, ouch!

💙during his flight there’s a montage of sister imperator being pregnant with him, during this montage we see twins. Twin babies, twin children. We are unsure if this is a reference to Tobias’s twins or if Copia has a twin.

I made a guide to all the ghouls and ghoulettes!

I was trying to familiarize myself with some of the ghouls from previous eras so I made some notes for future reference. I think it could be useful to anyone else too, especially new fans, so I included all the ghouls and I thought I’d share it here <3

As promised I went ahead and continued my "ghoul guide" with a part 2 (part one linked in replies)! This one covers stuff specifically with a made up lore guide of in-world ghoul stuff as if they were a sort of unique magic entity.

This one wound up way longer and had to be split so expect a third final one eventually lmao. for now though... I'm gonna take a break and yell. Bonus extra info plus the transcript under the cut!

Bonus note: While not portrayed in the guide, it’s important to know a detail about ghouls’ origin called “memory echoes”. While ghouls are formed from humans past who lose all memory of their previous self while maintaining an assumed personality from before, at times certain instances of events, actions, items, and otherwise can trigger these “echoes”. Echoes are very rare, but a valued treasure to ghouls; they make them feel more connected to their past and more “human”. Upon triggering an echo, a ghoul will become completely listless, unable to respond or react until the echo has completed, usually within seconds.

“Memory echoes” are described as blurry faded memories that often show featureless shapes and colors, but a very strong “feeling” of a Deja-vu of the moment. They feel viscerally real and can have a mix of the senses i.e. touch and smell, but produce no recognizable faces or imagery of the self. No ghoul has ever reported fully remembering one, nor any semblance of their true past beyond the haunting leftovers.

A Compendium of Hell’s Derivates

While there are many theories on the demonic nature of ghouls,

The true source is surprisingly Human.

Souls cannot be recreated; rather, they’re Recycled and Reborn

The cycle of ghoul creation started for unknown reasons…

But one thing is Certain:

Natural forces do not change easily.

Raw elements collide with the fuel of life itself until one connects

by His command

A violent injection of pure elemental magic

Rewrites and erases all memory and one’s past, drastically altering the soul…

These new powers lend to the powerful allies of the ministry,

However….

… new powers are a dangerous toy.

While coined as “Feral”, new ghouls would better be designated “Raw”, “Unbound”, and “Lawlessly Dangerous”

First formed, they are still elements;

Torrential, Aimless,

Incapable of coherent thought or rules

-but with time, coherence returns to the individual

Who grows much like a life cycle’s stages without necessarily aging.

The overall cycle is the same per ghoul, yet varied enough each rises differently…

First form: “Raw” – Second form (1): “Feral” – Second form (2) – Third form: “Stabilized”

Catalyst, violent, poor formation – Unaware, wild, chaotic – Conscious; can act like oneself; less raw – fully formed and recognizable

The first form, “Raw”, is notably so violent the devil himself does not release them until stage two.

The second form in stage one of a “Feral” ghoul is much like the forces of nature; free willed and wild, understanding minimal speech.

Take caution: they can be mischievous and cause decent damage.

In the second stage of a “Feral” ghoul, they behave like typical people; however, they’re still very free and may choose to never fully stabilize.

Note: you can tell they’ve reached this stage by presence of a tail and civil habits.

If desired, a ghoul reaches the final form: “Stabilized”. They’re transformed into a stable humanoid body, a form less powerful but safer.

Note: Talented ghouls can change form at will in this stage between secondary Feral and Stable.

When it comes to location, each form is most likely to be found:

Raw: Hell, contained

Feral (Stage 1): wilds/natural areas

Feral (Stage 2): wilds and civil areas

Stabilized: anywhere people go

Seeing feral ghouls is not uncommon, and can even be considered lucky!

They tend to provide free protection to keep their home

Ghouls can only stabilize via ministry ritual;

One can assume they’re ministry members if stable, even off duty.

Ghouls are uncommon, but found most places if looked for;

This seems especially true near ministry placements.

Ghouls only form from adults and don’t “age” traditionally, yet they’re still mortal

Deceased ghouls do not seem to return or recycle.

Summoning intentionally pulls only second stage feral ghouls or stable ghouls from anywhere,

They don’t always like this however (see other guide).

The cycle of ghouls serves a main purpose – as forces for the Dark One, in return for rebirth

However, there are two channels through which they serve.

1) Natural defense against corrupted holy magic

Non-stable ghouls defend at will naturally where they live

2) training to fight, protect, and uphold the ministry’s efforts in the name of the Devil.

Contrary to belief, summonings cannot grab from “nothing”;

Like the creation of a ghoul,

Their element, once developed, is what becomes pulled by nature

The force of such pull is incredible,

A disorientating test of will so great…

…it can render even the most sound minds rather violent.

This is why while some choose to stabilize, others may not;

But should a mind change, they can be freed or re-summoned.

Alternative to wild summoning, one can summon from trained ghouls over feral;

Many ghouls are trained for ministry positions all over, but any can be summoned if unassigned.

Though stabilized, unassigned ghouls are not contractually bound to anyone until assigned.

They’re great for extra work hands and being able to know what kind of team mates you’ll get without leaving it to chance.

Summoning any ghoul however reverts them to feral form, and the challenge to tame them remains the same.

Just because you know a ghoul does not mean an easy summon.

Finally, be warned: forcing unwanted breaking or upholding of a summoning contract

Will have dire consequences.

Aside from rarity of an element, there are “power classes” within each element.

Tiers:

Rarity of an element does not equal strength.

The break down is as follows:

Rare – extreme and dangerous power. These ghouls earn a specialized title.

Quite strong, stand out in their class and very sought after.

Most common tier; average and decent powers that are expectable.

Weak powers, but some uses are applicable.

Uncommon – ghouls who possess little to no powers. Ghouls in this tier may at times suddenly change power tier without warning to any other category.

S-Tier ghouls are quite rare and a sight to behold- truly, they embody nature’s power.
