November 1975. I feel like this moment from BATMAN #269 tells us more about how Batman does operate than we necessarily wanted to know. The woman is Terry Tremayne, who is sort of a pastiche of Brigid O'Shaughnessy in THE MALTESE FALCON; writer David Vern dedicates the story to the late Dashiell Hammett.

For the anon who was asking for book recs, here are some of my all time favourites. Historical mysteries: Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma series (Ireland, 600AD), Candace Robb's Owen Archer series (England, Middle Ages) and Lauren Haney's Lieutnant Bak series (Ancient Egypt). Haven't been able to get my hands on all the books in the first two, but those I've read I've loved. In the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre: Kim Stanley Robinson: Three Californias Triptych, 3 diff. post-apocalyptic stories (1/?)
(2/?, book recs) David Brin: The Postman (forget the movie), The practice effect, and of course “Earth”, which has a bit of something for nearly everyone. Author intro to Earth: “As writers go, I suppose I’m known as a bit of an optimist, so it seems only natural that this novel projects a future where there’s a little more wisdom than folly… maybe a bit more hope than despair. In fact, it’s about the most encouraging tomorrow I can imagine right now. What a sobering thought.“
(3/3 book recs) Tad Williams: for a lighter read: Tailchaser’s song. Or his fantasy trilogy "Memory, sorrow and thorn”, and the sci-fi series “Otherland”. He’s a great storyteller. And Connie Willis “Doomsday book” was also a very interesting read. And last, but definitely not least: Terry Pratchett!! Anything by him, though most will be from his Discworld series. All are good but I particularly liked “Small Gods” and “Witches abroad”.
