STONEWALL FOREVER
Documentary
The Past, Present, and Future of Pride
You Tube
youtube
Stonewall Forever is a documentary from NYC’s LGBT Community Center directed by Ro Haber. The film brings together voices from over 50 years of the LGBTQ rights movement to explore queer activism before, during and after the Stonewall Riots.
The history of the Stonewall Riots is equally as cherished as it is charged. There are questions of who was there, who “threw the first brick” and who can claim Stonewall. This film doesn’t answer these questions but instead it aims to expand the story of Stonewall by including more voices in its telling.
Stonewall Forever brings together queer activists, experienced and new, to look at the movement for LGBTQ equality before, during and after Stonewall. It highlights trans people, people of color and homeless people who were at the forefront of the movement, and who have often been erased from the narrative. It explores how the activism of today stands on the shoulders of the activists who have come before. And it asks us all to recognize the legacy of Stonewall that remains today, when the struggle for queer rights is far from over.
Stonewall Forever was directed by Ro Haber and created by a predominantly queer and trans cast and crew who are proud to be a part of preserving this legacy.

Terrorbird Media CMJ Showcase
I love Cake Shop. And Win Win are cool. And Michna's new EP is solid. And that new Flume track is cool. And I met Prince Rama once...and they seemed like nice enough girls. So even though there is no way I can get to this, I thought I'd share.
Terrorbird x CMJ x Cake Shop from polychronicus on 8tracks Radio.

I am by no means a New Yorker, native or otherwise. Still, I have plenty of (mostly sweaty) memories related to Cake Shop, like:
- a bourbon-shooting Shilpa Rae playing a set best described as Stereolab fronted by Glenn Danzig
- standing next to Avey Tare of Animal Collective as some guy endlessly bugs him with questions about Noah while Avey is DJing
- Marnie Stern's "vag bag" and the beginning of her exhausting "seven shows in five nights" run at CMJ 2010
- My first Math The Band "load out"
- Several Terrorbird Media day parties, at which I've seen countless bands I'll likely never see here in Norfolk
So take a minute to click the title link and head to Cake Shop's Pledge Music site. They've got a bunch of cool pledge incentives, like free drink tickets, guest list passes, a mix tape of rare cuts from bands that have played there, and access to "secret showcases".
And, sure, there are hundreds of venues in New York City. But take it from someone who's seen venue after venue close - you don't realize what you've got until it's gone.

The first time I heard Teen Daze was at Terrorbird Media's 2011 CMJ showcase. I couldn't help but think that if Tron:Legacy had been created in some alternate universe that he would have created the score. After all, with his new record, All of Us, Together , Jamison AKA Teen Daze says: "I wanted to make a record that sounded more synthetic but also inviting - this is futuristic music with heart."
While we wait for the new album, arriving May 22nd on Lefse Records, he's just released the first single, "Brooklyn Sunburn." I have no idea how a Brooklyn sunburn differs from a regular sunburn, but somehow, this track feels more like the balm you place on after you've received said sunburn. Also, feel free to visit Teen Daze's Bandcamp page to hear /purchase his previous EPs and check out this self-curated mix of his remixes of artists such as Toro Y Moi, Tycho, and Earth, Wind, and Fire.
End of line.

I remember seeing Cloud Nothings at Carpark's CMJ showcase back in October and being surprised. The first time I heard Dylan Baldi's voice, I pictured him being some awkward guy wearing oversized cardigan sweaters, flannel shirts, and torn jeans. Maybe his hair would be in his eyes and he'd be hunched over his microphone. Then I remembered: this was 2011, not 1991. And I was in New York, not Seattle.
Instead, I saw a fully confident, bespectacled, twenty-something that was putting his all into music from an album coming out next year. On "Stay Useless" it seemed as if the two biggest rock bands of the past twenty years had mated, mixing the jangling guitars of The Strokes and throat-shredding vocals of Nirvana. And songs like "No Future, No Past", "Wasted Days", and "No Sentiment" made me want to scramble onstage just to throw myself off. "Wasted Days" especially left me with flashbacks to all the "angst-filled alternative rock" music I heard growing up, with its scrawling guitars and Baldi's declarations that:
I know my life's not gonna change/and I live through all these wasted days/Never thought that I'd end up this way/And I know it's gonna stay the same
The album featuring these songs (and more), Attack On Memory, will be released on January 24th by Carpark Records. In the meantime, click the link above to stream the full album via Complex.

Tycho's "Hours" has just become my summer jam, despite the fact it comes from an album that will not be released until the tail-end of the winter release schedule. With a slowly rising dream-like intro that evokes Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" that quickly evolves into a thumping bass line and even woozier synths a la Music Has The Right to Children, what's not to love? Still, it's going to be hard to listen to this with the windows down in 40-50 degree weather, so I recommend checking it out now. Download it at the link above and look for his new album, Dive, to be released on Ghostly International on November 15th.

On this, the same day that Jarvis Cocker, Erol Alkan, and Boyz Noize unleash a Leonard Cohen cover/dance remix, Jesse Lortz takes us back to the cabin in the woods with his video for the track, "Daggers" from The World Is Just A Shape To Fill The Night. Jesse and his group of female background singers easily bring back memories of the first time I heard Songs of Leonard Cohen, especially "So Long, Marianne".
While it's safe to say The Dutchess and The Duke are no more, it seems as though Jesse's not quite ready to shake the California folk sound they so easily made their own. This won't fit the bill for the summer jam I'm still seeking, but you can bet I'll be playing this one very often when it arrives on August 16.
Hear more of the album at MTV Hive, or download two tracks at Stereogum and My Old Kentucky Blog.

So, I've known about Kyle Andrews for a few years now. And, truth be told, I've also been trying to ignore him. And I'm not sure why or how I've even managed to. His music's been everywhere the past year or so (Grey's Anatomy, Doritos commercials) and almost every time my fiance watches "The Real Housewives of [insert your town here]", the Holiday Inn ad campaign using his song "You Always Make Me Smile" is bound to run at least twice in the hour. And no matter how many times I tell myself to stop, I always find myself humming along.
And so here I am posting a remix of a track from his upcoming album, Robot Learn Love. Created by Starfucker (or STRFKR) from Portland, Oregon, this song is like R. Kelly pulling a rabbit from a hat that is also pulling a rabbit from a hat. As Andrews sings of his relationship problems, STRFKR supplies a smooth R&B jam beat complete with synths and drum loops, fitting perfectly with the theme of the song. All that's missing is the MIDI strings. Oh, and Kyle's omnipresent "Whoo!" is there, too.
Final thoughts: You can dislike Kyle's music as much as I used to, but you can't deny the guy can write a damn good earworm.
