Teenage writers, completely seriously: she was at the height of her career. She was a CEO, a girlboss, a mother of a teen, soon to face retirement. Sometimes she woke up at night feeling the cold touch of the grave on her soul and in the morning the rheumatism had got into her bones. She was at least thirty.
Actually published middle aged writers, straining back into the mists of time to write from the the perspective of a 19yo, wheezing and crying: but that terrible fate wouldn’t come for her for years and years, not until she was an old, old woman — at least twenty eight, maybe even thirty.

"Just do as you're told," Mogget said firmly. "Think of yourself as Abhorsen's sworn sword-hand, if it makes you feel better, though in this present era, you'll find common sense is more important than honor. "Very well", Touchstone muttered, humbly. He stood up and put on the underclothes and shirt, but couldn't get the trousers past his heavily muscled thighs. "There's a kilt and leggings in one of the chests back there," Mogget said after watching Touchstone hopping around on one leg, the other trapped in too-tight leather."
if you, as an author, aren't introducing your male love interests like this, what are you even doing with your life?
(from Sabriel, by Garth Nix)
#garth nix you were so real for this#if you haven't read these books for context mogget is (for the moment) an untrustworthy talking cat#guess who's back on her old kingdom bullllllllshitttttttt#the chokehold this book still has on me#(i bought my son terciel & elinor for xmas and then i read it and then i wanted to re-read the whole series)#(loved it btw the abhorsens have such dreadful kuchiki energy)#(also did not expect sabriel's mom to have like 12 ranks in clowning and buffoonery but you know what? based)#touchstone is a real fixer-upper of a man but he is trash for sabriel and that will win me over every time#the time he went into a berserker rage and used it to run up a hill with her crushed to his tits. peak.#i have a TYPE okay?#i have two types actually and if i had a nickel for every time i get an otp out of it i'd have two nickels and i can live with that

It's objectively hilarious that Terciel felt ill-prepared to be Abhorsen. He spent like a decade apprenticing and never had been past the 6th gate? Bruh Lirael found out she was Abhorsen-in-waiting about 15 mins before she had to walk into the 9th precinct and then go defeat Orannis. Baptisms by fire for both his daughters rip

The Abhorsen family tree(as close as I can make it) SPOILERS BELOW, this is a long one
As disjointed as it is, The Abhorsens are highlighted in green, with their known place in the timeline. There are so many i couldn't connect, and only some are named. Blue are members of the Clayr Bloodline present in the tree, and orange are members of the Royal Bloodline. Un-highlighted means they are either related by marriage/partnership or did not obtain the Abhorsen title. This is a link to the wiki where i was able to piece together some of them.https://oldkingdomwiki.fandom.com/wiki/Abhorsen , There are some i don't mention that have a concrete placement.
The clearest concrete Abhorsen however (Other than their namesake) is Kalliel, who is number 12, while 13 is her unnamed grandson. Even Clariel/Chlorr is a part of the family(Her grandfather-Tyriel) at roughly 600 years before Sabriel/Lirael.
There are 16 more named, but out of order Abhorsens. I have done my best to put them in order(I just don't know their official position)
Soraniel (m)
Feriniel (f)
Madarael (f)
Kariniel (f)
Tyriel, Teriel(A-I-W, before death) and Yannael(A-I-W, before Belatiel)
Belatiel
Jaramiel
Jerizael
Alleil
Herraniel/Tizaniel (siblings, but unknown order)
Then of course, there are named ones who I dont even have a hint for:
Cassiel (Lirael wields their bells)
Yezael
Ulamiel
Bannatiel
Keramitiel
Anyway, I hope this is remotely correct and that you enjoyed
EDIT: Looking at this, it looks like Elinor and Terciel are distant cousins? Since the family tree is funky, but the wiki says Elinor is "Of the line of Tizanael", she's also descended from an Abhorsen
(G-G-Grandparent Jeremiel) herself.
EDIT 2: Added names i forgot that have rough placement

I finally got around to reading Terciel and Elinor after buying it months ago and I enjoyed it! It wasn’t the strongest prequel in the series but I really enjoyed learning more about the Abhorsen line and history and Mogget and charter magic. I’m not a huge romance person so the Terciel/Elinor stuff was kind of secondary to everything. I was really there for devouring all the new world building tidbits.
I enjoyed Terciel and Elinor and all the other characters though! Really liked Tizanael because my weakness will always be hyper competent bitter old gilfs. I loved seeing Mirelle making a badass dnd ranger cameo. I was honestly surprised there weren’t more cameos since we’ve been to nearly all the settings before.
I don’t think romance is Garth Nix’s strength but it’s not so weak that it ruins any of his books for me (save for Lirael bc that girl is a lesbian you can’t tell me otherwise I’m sorry Nicholas)
His queer rep is a bit iffy but it’s not bad for a boomer that started the series in the 90s. With every book he’s been more open to diversifying the cast but never as much as I’d like. At least in this new book it’s implied that in Ancelstiere queerness might not be looked down upon. One of Elinor’s friends is implied to be a lesbian and no one has a problem with it. The Clayr have always been free love bisexual glacier hippies.
What I have always appreciated is that there aren’t really any assigned gender rolls or tropes that especially older fantasy can fall victim to. The setting is very egalitarian.
8/10 if you like the Old Kingdom series I do suggest it. If you are interested in starting the series don’t start with this book though, definitely start it in its release order beginning with Sabriel. You’ll probably appreciate the prequels Clariel and Terciel & Elinor more that way.
Anyways please read this series it’s The Locked Tomb’s spiritual precursor in a lot of ways and my favorite world building and magic system of any fantasy series I’ve ever read.

I've been working through an audiobook of Terciel and Elinor
a prequel to the Old Kingdom series, with the good-aligned necromancers, and the permanent splice between mundane 1920s-ish Ancelstierre and the place with magic and zombies and such, introducing the parents of the first heroine, Sabriel.
Elinor, the mother who died off-screen just before the start of book 1: introduced doing amateur theatre and juggling knives.
Terciel, actually survived nearly to the end of book 1: "I Am Sir Does-Not-Want-Kids, My Life Is So Shit It Would Be An Act of Depravity to Bring Another Life Into This..."
Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear...

"What's the difference, anyway? Is it simply a comedy is funny, and a tragedy is sad?"
"For Breakespear, the comedies end happily, usually with a wedding. In the tragedies everybody dies. Or almost everybody."
"Everybody does die," said Terciel quietly. "Or they should."
"Yes, but preferably at the right time," said Elinor. "The tragedy is when it is too soon."

I’m about three-quarters of the way through Terciel & Elinor, and I think this might just be the sluttiest book Garth Nix has ever written.
This is not in any way a complaint.
Elinor is confronted with being the eleventh-hour Replacement Chain-Bearer on the Kerrigor Hunt and responds to this by going “Welp, time to lose my virginity,” and honestly, LOVE that for her. Tap Terciel’s himbo ass, girl.

the way I asked for clariel and goldenhand for christmas but am probably gonna finish abhorsen in the next few days (if not today)
#the turtle speaks#i could always buy terciel & elinor and read that#but i am slightly concerned that based on the fact that it is the latest released book#that it relies on lore established in clariel and goldenhand

Props to T&E for finally exploring something I’ve wondered on and off for years, courtesy of cover art — whether the forehead charter mark is the same for everyone or individual. Because the marks have meanings, so is the meaning simply ‘baptised into the charter’ or a family symbol or something to do with their personality or horoscope or what.
