Storia Di Musica #302 - The Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin - The Inner Mounting Flame, 1971

Mahavishnu: nella religione induista è uno dei nomi di Vishnu, e vuol dire all'incirca Divina compassione, potere e giustizia. Fu il maestro spirituale Sri Chinmoy, una delle figure più carismatiche e importanti nella diffusione delle filosofie indù in Europa e negli Stati Uniti, a dare questo nome al nuovo progetto di John McLaughlin. Il chitarrista era agli inizi degli anni '70 la nuova stella della chitarra jazz, uno dei personaggi decisivi e più incisivi nella nascita della jazz fusion. Era già famoso per il suo virtuosismo quando nella seconda metà degli anni '60 arriva negli Stati Uniti, dopo aver svezzato un'intera generazione di chitarristi inglesi (primo fra tutti un certo Jimmy Page). E fu quasi per caso che appena prima delle registrazione di In A Silent Way (1969): McLaughlin era negli USA da poche settimane per registrare con il fido batterista del secondo quintetto di Miles Davis, Tony Williams (il disco era Emergency! in power trio Williams, McLaughlin e Larry Young al basso), che con il suo fiuto eccezionale gli chiede di partecipare alle registrazioni. Ed è con il magone in gola per poter suonare con un suo mito che John inizia una collaborazione che lo porterà ad essere punta di diamante del successivo, e inimitabile, Bitches Brew, che fu registrato a poche settimane da In A Silent Way ma che vide la luce solo l'anno successivo. Nel mitico disco, una parte del suo assolo di chitarra in Bitches Brew fu isolato dal lavoro paziente e certosino di Teo Macero alla cabina di regia musicale e divenne un omaggio del maestro al suo chitarrista: John McLaughlin, dove Davis non suona nemmeno. Partecipa anche a On The Corner, ma già durane le prime registrazioni del 1969 fu lo stesso Miles a spingerlo alla carriera solista. Inizia con un gioiello: Extrapolation del 1969 lo vede in quartetto con John Surman (sassofono), Brian Odgers (contrabbasso) e Tony Oxley (batteria) in un disco che si lega ancora al bop ma che contiene già i semi di quell'albero fruttuoso che di lì a pochi anni inizierà a incantare una generazione di musicisti jazz. Nel 1971 fonda la sua band, come mentore Chinmoy, che fu influente consigliere anche di Carlos Santana, che diventerà grande amico e sostenitore del chitarrista inglese. La Mahanishnu Orchestra fu fondata insieme a Jan Hammer alla tastiera, Jerry Goodman al violino, Rick Laird al basso elettrico e Billy Cobham alla batteria, quest'ultimo anch'egli collaboratore di Miles Davis e uno dei più influenti batteristi di tutti i tempi per stile tecnica e innovazioni musicali.

Tutto è pronto per l'esordio. Presso i Cbs Studios tra la 49 East e la 52.ma strada in Midtown, Manhattan, in una sola e leggendaria sessione di prove ad Agosto del 1971, dopo averlo suonato solo un paio di volte in precedenza, viene registrato The Inner Mounting Flame, che esce prodotto da McLaughlin nel Novembre dello stesso anno. Sin da subito si capisce che la sintonia telepatica tra i musicisti è a livelli superiori, e rimarrà proverbiale negli anni a venire, e la scaletta sciorina il meglio della band e delle singole abilità dei musicisti. Meeting Of The Spirits è l'invocazione magica a colpi di assoluti istrionici di McLaughlin alla chitarra e Billy Cobham alla batteria, a cui si aggiungono pian piano quelle degli altri musicisti, in un incedere ipnotico e vorticoso. Con Dawn è come un momento di relativa pausa, un prendere fiato per ripartire con Noonward Race, rappresentazione clamorosa della velocità e della tecnica di Cobham e la chitarra che omaggia il da poco scomparso Jimi Hendrix di McLaughlin, sostenuti dal basso pulsante di Laird, il piano jazzato di Hammer e il violino “scanzonato” di Goodman. A Lotus On Irish Streams vede protagonista il violino di Goodman, grande colonna del brano, che disegna delle scie musicali che davvero fanno pensare al fluire liquido dell'elemento, in uno dei brani più sognanti dell'intero repertorio. Vital Transformation riporta sul groove funk e veloce di Noonward Race ma l'atmosfera cambia per The Dance Of Maya che parte misteriosa, poi diventa blues e finisce nella solita e proverbiale corsa a rincorrersi tra chitarra e batteria, vero marchio di fabbrica della banda. You know, You know, dalla struttura delicata, diventerà fornitura pregiata per molti artisti, ricordo David Sylvian in I Surrender, i Massive Attack in One Love, addirittura il rapper Mos Def, Cecil Otter e altri ancora. Awakening conclude con le tastiere di Hammer un disco dove la velocità e la potenza del motore musicale impressiona ancora oggi per precisione, vitalità e per la padronanza assoluta delle variazioni ritmiche, strutturali e sentimentali dei brani.

Il disco fu un successo, e venderà negli anni un milione di copie, uno dei più grandi successi del jazz. Il successo riporterà in classifica persino i primi esperimenti da solista di McLaughlin. La band si riproporrà con Birds Of Fire del 1973 (dove c'è un omaggio al Maestro in Miles Beyond), altra meraviglia, e si ritrova in studio a Londra, ai Trident, per registrare quello che secondo loro dovrebbe essere l'album definito del connubio jazz e rock. Ma la tensione è alle stelle e la band si scioglie a metà lavoro (qualcosa verrà pubblicato in Between Nothingness & Eternity). La band si scioglie, ma McLaughling continua e stavolta costruisce una nuova grande Orchestra con fiati, trombe e il violino di Jean Luc Ponty, fedele collaboratore di Frank Zappa, ed altri grandi musicisti per ampliare le visioni della musica che ha in mente, con risultati altalenanti. La Mahavishnu Orchestra avrà persino una terza rinascita a metà anni '80, e continuerà ad essere il sogno musicale di un eterno ragazzo inglese che una volta disse: Mia madre dovette sequestrarmi la chitarra per mesi perché stavo tutto il giorno a suonarla e andavo avanti nonostante mi sanguinassero le dita.

Interview #495: Quince Pan

q: Give a short introduction of yourself: a: I am Quince Pan, a documentary photographer born in 2000, currently based in Singapore. I am now waiting to enter university to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

q: What is your series "JBM" about? What was the process of making the series? a: “JBM”, my family’s abbreviation of “Jalan Bukit Merah”, is a documentary photo project centred on my maternal grandmother, Lau Giok Niu, her cultural heritage and her HDB flat where I spent my childhood under her care. It is my first exhibited series and also my first serious long-term documentary project.

In 2015, I followed my grandmother to visit her hometown in Fengwei, Quangang District, Quanzhou City, Fujian, China. Bringing my camera along on the trip, I noticed that instead of shooting purely for fun or beauty, I would include certain objects (for example, a calendar on the wall) in my frames because they had historical significance. I submitted those Fengwei photos as my portfolio for the 2016 Noise Art Mentorship (Photography and Moving Images). I got selected, and my mentor, Jean Qingwen Loo, urged me to pursue a project which I could speak authentically about. Through her criticism, I learnt to further prioritise meaning over style. My grandmother and my childhood were topics close to my heart, especially as she cared for me during my childhood and gave me the gift of the 头北 Thâu-pak dialect, a unique variant of Hokkien from the Quangang District. Eventually, “JBM” was born as my mentorship capstone, and was exhibited at the “Between Home and Home” Noise Art Mentorship Showcase at Objectifs in 2017. I haven’t stopped shooting; that’s why it’s an ongoing long-term project!

“JBM” contains a range of visual styles, ranging from photojournalistic fly-on-the-wall documentations of heated family discussions and visits by distant relatives from China to more tender images of sunlight at the void deck where my late grandfather’s wake was held in 2006. Rituals and festivities are anthropologically significant, so I pay particular attention to Chinese New Year, the Qing Ming Festival and the Winter Solstice, which my family celebrates. I also look at how other photographers document their families: Bob Lee, Nicky Loh, Bernice Wong, Brian Teo and Nancy Borowick.

More broadly, “JBM'' extends beyond photography and is a family history project. Since 2013, I have been researching the Quangang district, 头北 Thâu-pak dialect and my grandmother’s clan. I discovered that other descendants from her clan established an ancestral temple in Singapore, which initially stood on Craig Road but is now housed in a flat in Telok Blangah. I already did some fieldwork, interviews and preliminary documentation, which led to an article I published in April 2021 in Daojia: Revista Eletrônica de Taoismo e Cultura Chinesa. Maybe I will explore this in greater depth in future photo projects!

q: How did you get into photography? a: When I was around seven years old, I loved to play with my father’s Fujifilm compact. As a young student, I hadn’t heard of terms such as “light painting”, “Dutch angle” and “rule of thirds”, but those were the techniques I subconsciously used in my photographs.

I entered the Noise Art Mentorship, as previously mentioned. During the school holidays, I worked as a media intern at Logue and as an assistant at Objectifs for the “Passing Time” exhibition and book by Lui Hock Seng. Through these work experiences, I learnt so much from Jean Loo, Yang Huiwen, Ryan Chua, Lim Mingrui and Chris Yap: news angles, editorial writing, scanning and touching up negatives and slides, colour management for print, liaising with clients and issuing invoices, among other skills. As part of the Noise Art Mentorship, I was given a copy of “+50” by the PLATFORM collective, which opened my eyes to diverse approaches within the documentary genre. I started to regularly attend talks at Objectifs and DECK, where I got to know people in the local photography scene, particularly in the documentary tradition.

q: You also do videography. How do you see it in relation to your photography? a: Videography requires a different way of seeing and thinking compared to photography, because video has additional temporal and auditory dimensions. With photography, I don’t have to think about how long I want a scene to be, what foley and B-roll I want to overlay, or have a storyboard in my head before heading out to shoot. In that sense, photography is more reactive to and receptive of situational contingencies because it requires less pre-planning.

Also, photography can be a solitary endeavour, but it is quite difficult to make films alone, and the schoolmates I used to make films with have since embarked on separate paths in life. However, photography and videography share the same basics as visual media: composition and sequencing.

Fundamentally, I see myself as a documentarian, and this applies to any medium I work in, be it photography or videography, or even writing. The end goal is to record and share history by telling stories from lesser-known perspectives. Thus, the topics of my video projects are similar to the topics of my photo projects; sometimes I do both side by side! The films I made were all documentary shorts of places which do not exist anymore, such as the Hup Lee coffee shop at 114 Jalan Besar and the old Sembawang Hot Spring before NParks took over the site from MINDEF and redeveloped it.

Currently, I am working as a videographer for Sing Lit Station’s poetry.sg archive. Thankfully, this job can be done solo!

q: What or who is inspiring you right now? a: Bob Lee, for being an amazing father and spreading hope and joy to others through his images. Alex and Rebecca Webb, for pairing literature with photography. Tom Brenner, for approaching photojournalism like street photography. Sim Chi Yin, for her international achievements and being both an academic and a practitioner. Brian Teo, for being an eminent contemporary. Last but not least, Kevin WY Lee’s advice, “CPR: Craft, Point, Rigour”, which I try to benchmark my work against.

q: Upcoming projects or ideas? a: Nothing concrete on my mind so far. I am just going to see where life takes me and what topics life makes me want to explore or talk about.

q: Any music to recommend? a: First and foremost, my fight song: “倔强 Stubborn” by Mayday. A close second, Queen’s 1986 “Under Pressure” live performance at Wembley is a transformative experience. The catchy “他夏了夏天 He Summered Summer” by Sodagreen brings out the grandeur in the mundane. “Silhouette” by KANA-BOON and “Everybody’s Changing” by Keane remind me of the fragility of life and time. I also like The Fray, Kings of Leon, Last Dinosaurs, Stephanie Sun, Tanya Chua, and the Taiwanese indie band DSPS.

If you could only pick one favorite Queen song for every album, what would they be and why?

this is SO hard, thanks for asking it but also fuck you because how. does one choose?!?! some albums have like five or six GREAT songs on, it’s insanely hard to pick but i shall try!!

queen - i think it has to be doing all right because freddie’s voice is just. so high and pure and sweet and adorable, it makes me so soft every time i hear it. i love keep yourself alive so much as well though, especially as both of these really remind me of watching bohemian rhapsody, specifically the first time, sat in the cinema just so enamoured already, it was such a great feeling, i’d pay so much money to be able to experience it again for the first time.

queen ii - shoutout to this album for the white/black theme and brian and freddie just being Like That all the time, they’re so extra and particular about matching everything. black queen, white queen, and seven seas are all so good but if i had to pick a favourite it would be nevermore. i used to listen to this song all the time, there’s such beautiful emotion in it, the way freddie sings is so sad and regretful it’s a gorgeous sound, and when it gets a bit harder on the ‘when you say you didn’t love me any more’ and then so soft again.

sheer heart attack - obvious choice but killer queen, it’s just such a great song to sing along to. that said, in the lap of the gods, the way they sing it live where it’s a bit rockier is GREAT and if this version was on the album it would probably be that.

a night at the opera - i honestly cannot choose between 39 and sweet lady. i love brian’s voice so much and him singing 39 is everything, and sweet lady goes so hard and it’s got such a great, angry sound to it. loads of great songs on this album.

a day at the races - another impossible choice. god. tie your mother down, somebody to love, lover boy, and teo torriatte??? they’re all so different so picking one is HARD. i think, with a gun to my head, i’d choose teo torriatte. this song is utterly beautiful and brian does not get enough credit for how good of a songwriter he is.

news of the world - okay this one is also difficult because my favourite song from this album has changed. i used to be really obsessed with spread your wings a few years ago, it’s one of those songs that just Speaks to me w that escapism, miserable in your job sort of way. but it’s late is just too good. does brian think he’s subtle?! god i love him. (special mention just to the album cover for this because DAMN and i’m also always so into the fact that frank is holding both brian and freddie in his hand, they’re just led in a pile together because ofc.)

jazz - this has to be fat bottomed girls it’s just an absolute jam and another one to sing along to, it’s impossible not to. AaAAAaAAAArrreEEe you gonna take me home tonight? god it’s so good.

the game - first of all, another great album cover, brian in this outfit and those glasses Does Things To Me. some great tracks but save me without a second’s hesitation. another beautiful song by brian that doesn’t get enough attention, the lyrics, the soft sound, the emotion - this song is a work of heartfelt genius. i adore the way they play it live with brian on piano, i love SO MUCH that freddie is the band’s pianist but occasionally brian chooses to play parts for whatever reason so the song itself is freddie’s sole focus and the audience can focus on him. i really think this song is about freddie as well. fucking beautiful song.

flash gordon - does this count? i don’t know many from here but flash gordon. i LOVE the lyric ‘just a man, with a man’s courage’ i’d get that as a tattoo, it’s so simple and brilliant. just a man with a man’s courage - and that’s enough.

hot space - i actually love this album, i don’t know why people shit on it. it’s another hard choice, freddie’s sheer slut energy in staying power is incredible, las palabras is beautiful, under pressure is obviously a classic. my faves come down to calling all girls and dancer. i don’t know if i can choose. i love the video for calling all girls so much but i love the story within dancer, which is another song i think is about freddie (though tbh as i’ve said before i think most of brian’s songs are). i love that brian, for all his criticism of this era and how unhappy he clearly was, got involved and wrote this, and it’s really damn good. it’s a b-side but soul brother is obviously also great, i don’t think it’s the best sounding song but i love it anyway, bless freddie for writing this about brian. ‘he will rock you’, ‘he’s somebody you can love’ ok fred ok.

the works - this is probably my favourite queen album, it’s the one i usually have in my car stereo, every track is great. again there’s a song on here that used to mean a LOT to me, which is keep passing the open windows but i wouldn’t say that’s my fave any more. tear it up, radio gaga, i want to break free, and hammer to fall are all SO good. radio gaga was my fave queen song for YEARS, since i was a little kid. GOD this one is hard. but i think i’m going to say.......i want to break free. it’s a classic, you have to sing along, the video slaps (i so wish the whole thing had been the drag bit). such a great, instantly recognisable guitar solo from brian. shoutout also to is this the world we created - another great brian/freddie thing. just casually wrote this wonderful song together and decided to have another song with just the two of them on stage, roger and john must’ve been like, oh alright boys should we even bother to show up for the concerts or what?!

a kind of magic - who wants to live forever. several great tracks on this album - princes of the universe is a favourite of mine and one vision and it’s a kind of magic are both great. but who wants to live forever is in another fucking league. again, brian writing incredible, poignant, masterful songs that are ridiculously beautiful. this song is so emotional and powerful i actually skip it a LOT because it can be difficult to listen to.

the miracle - fuck this is hard too. breakthru is GREAT and i watch the video for this every time i’m feeling down. cannot choose between i want it all and scandal. literally can’t choose. both great brian songs, they both go so hard, i physically can’t choose between them. freddie’s voice on both is just incredible, the anger in scandal is palpable and the video is fantastic. and i want it all is so heavy and good, the opening with the guitar is just PEAK. freddie and brian’s random duet in the middle?? i’m born again. sorry for cheating but i refuse to choose.

innuendo - okay this album has the show must go on which is another one i can’t bear to listen to too often because it’s so much, it’s one of queen’s best songs. the grief in this song and the defeated acceptance are heartbreaking. i can’t live with you is a bloody brilliant song as well, it goes so hard, it’s so damn good but my favourite is of course headlong. headlong is my FAVOURITE queen song i fucking love, i could listen to it on repeat all day. it’s so fun and happy and boppy and still so rocky and hard. i love the video so much, another one i watch whenever i’m feeling a bit shite. AND YOU RUSH IN H E A D L O N G. feels like it should be on top gun. i really want a freddie/brian top gun au where brian is the put-upon instructor who knows Everything about these planes and freddie is the arrogant little so-and-so who flies them.

made in heaven - thinking about them making this album gets me every time. i think the fave has to be too much love will kill you. you can hear and feel the internal battle with this one, brian writes excellent lyrics, it’s SUCH a good song. the bit where it gets all hard and rough and angry in the middle/end is SUCH GOOD SHIT. i cannot think about brian listening to this in the studio, trying to mix it when freddie’s already gone but he’s still there singing this. god.

probably biased but ,, roger’s. my boy has so much good things to say my friend ,, he uses his voice so well and for the right reasons. but my faves currently are strange frontier, man on fire and surrender! although I’ve been listening to Freddie’s solo stuff a lot recently though, particularly love me like there’s no tomorrow 💖💕💖💕

This is the one album I will listen to every single song to without skipping you know ?? like .. millionaire waltz is just a masterpiece. teo torriatte is just ,, god it sweeps me off my feet dude. Good old fashioned lover boy? gay. amazing. Somebody to love?? There’s nothing like it. And d r o w s e ???? Come on this song is pure art, lyrically, musically, it’s just pure art.

I fan dei Queen sono sempre alla ricerca della registrazione, del documento che permetta loro di avere quel concerto in più che forse mai verrà pubblicato, di sapere cosa è successo sul palco, tra eventi realmente accaduti e autentiche leggende metropolitane. Part of me loves this song, but part of me is also is uneasy about it. The song is supposed to be from the PoV of an unspecified Native American tribe, speaking of how colonization has destroyed everything they have stood and lived for - but it’s written by a British white man, Brian May - and we have no idea whether he consulted a Native American for this or not. If he hadn’t, or hadn’t gotten consent, it would be him speaking in the voice of the oppressed while still holding the privilege of being White…and that’s a little disturbing. I love the song, and Brian May is my favourite Queen member, but I can’t ignore that this song has problems.

2: A song you like with a number in the title

Besides being an ace guitarist, Brian May is also an Astrophysicist with a Doctorate!! xD And this song really shows us his background in that area: it’s fashioned in the song tradition of a sea shanty, but is about outer space and time relativity. I called this "the plot of Interstellar, 39 years before Interstellar”.

Thankfully I got into Queen loooong after I broke up with my ex. BUT “More than Words” by Extreme and Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” hit very particular sore spots coz he dedicated them to me AFTER dedicating them to a girl he always had a thing for (long story gah).

This is a song by Roger Taylor, and it’s not really his best (he’s capable of far superior tracks: Tenement Funster, Radio Gaga, These Are The Days of Our Lives, Small), but it garnered a lot of money and royalties by virtue of being the B-Side of Bohemian Rhapsody.

This song ended up being used as a theme for commercials for Ford cars in the early nineties, as I recall.

I mean, just listen to some of the lyrics! “Floating around in ecstasy”? “Tiger leaping through the sky defying the laws of gravity”? “Travelling at the speed of light”? I personally think the songs about a whole lot more, but you can’t deny the narrator sounds very trippy lol.

She keeps Moet et Chandon in a pretty cabinet

Let them eat cake, she says, just like Marie Antoinette…

Not about alcohol really, but it does mention it.

So John Deacon wrote this lovely sweet song for his wife, and it’s got the most adorable lyrics ever.

10: A song that makes you sad:

🎶Mother Love🎶 from Made in Heaven.

This is spoken of as being the last song Freddie ever recorded before he died, and his vocals are OFF-THE-ROOF powerful here. Two verses are sung by Freddie, and the last is sung by Brian May, who co-wrote the song (because Freddie felt too worn and weak and tired to continue recording, and told Brian he would return and do the rest. He never did). To hear Brian complete the song because Freddie has gone…is quite heartbreaking, actually. I’d definitely recommend everyone listen to this gem.

11: A song that you never get tired of:

What I love about Queen is how appreciative they are of their overseas fans, esp those who loved them at the very start of their career. Way before Bohemian Rhapsody placed Queen on the map, they had a very devoted fanbase in Japan, and I believe this song was written specially for them. Bijou is very interesting because it was structured as an “inside-out” version of the usual song - there would be instrumental (guitar, in this case) where lyrics would be and lyrics where you would typically find a guitar solo. Haunting.

🎶Goin’ Back🎶 by Larry Lurex

This was the first ever recording we have of Freddie Mercury, under the name of Larry Lurex. The original was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. A sampling of it is used at the very end of Mother Love, as a way of rewinding to the beginning…a symbolic goodbye to Freddie by going back to the first words that sparked his career.

Damn. I’m emotional now. 😭😭

16: One of your favorite classic songs:

Most people would go for 🎶Bohemian Rhapsody🎶 - and for good reason - but I think 🎶Prophet’s Song🎶 from the same album is equally deserving of this. It’s beautiful, has a lot of echoes that make it surreal and ethereal to me, and very power-packed vocals and lyrics.

17: A song that you’d sing a duet to on karaoke:

The fun thing about any Queen concert is that the audience has always been as much participant as spectator. LoML is one of the few ballads that the band used to interact with the audience, who were always ready to sing along. Freddie started this tradition in his live concerts, and Brian carried it on when he and Roger went back to touring as Queen +. To this day, you will always find a Queen audience being as involved in this song as the people on stage. It’s beautiful to watch. No Queen concert is complete without the audience crooning this ballad.

This happens to be one of Freddie’s last written compositions, and it’s unbelievably beautiful and dreamy. He had very few months left to live when he wrote this gem of a song, and there’s so much joy and hope and tranquility in it, and the moment you listen you will inevitably feel a sense of peace washing over you. I can imagine sitting by a lake alone in Switzerland, looking out at the sky and the snow, just listening to the song and basking in all it has to offer.

This is also a very hope-filled song, composed by Freddie shortly after he was diagnosed and told he had very little time left. It’s a very idealistic view of the world, but yeah I really like this one too. Just not as much as I like A Winter’s Tale. 😂

On one level it’s about a girl who cannot see and the boy who loves her. On another I feel like it can also be about the sadness of unrequited love in general, and of an almost-relationship.

This song was about Freddie’s cat. It’s fun xD

22: A song that moves you forward:

🎶Death On Two Legs🎶 from A Night At the Opera

I can be a spectacularly petty bitch sometimes, and this number can be so vicious it satisfies those vengeful, bitchy parts of me lol. A lot of the lines in this song are particularly cutting, and it should be because it was written for someone who was fleecing the band dry in their early days.

23: A song that you think everybody should listen to:

🎶Track 13/Untitled🎶 from Made in Heaven.

Most people might be put off by this track because it’s 22:33 whopping minutes long, and it’s an endless loop of sounds but OMG is it trippy. Mostly a lot of synthetic, loops, Freddie saying words, and this overall ethereal, otherworldly vibe. Most Queen fans interpret this piece as a depiction of Freddie’s journey to heaven, and call it “Ascension”. Kind of like a requiem, a fitting goodbye to Freddie. I can see why. I mean I can always lie down, close my eyes and immerse myself in the tranquility of this track. All 22.33 minutes of it. It’s a strange recommendation, but in my mind a fitting one.

24: A song by a band/group you wish were still together:

🎶The Show Must Go On🎶 from Innuendo.

Queen aren’t together because their frontman passed away, not entirely out of choice 😟 (okay and John Deacon didn’t want to be involved anymore later on). This was written and composed by Brian May, but Freddie really makes this song his own in the singing. The way he hits some of those notes - at that stage in his life - is spine tingling.

Oggi è il cosiddetto Black Friday, evento preso dagli Stati Uniti che oggi, il venerdì dopo il giorno del Ringraziamento, hanno forti sconti sui prodotti in vista del Natale. Ho scelto oggi un album “nero”, di una band americana che non solo con questo disco vendette milioni di copie, ma fu accusata di essersi svenduta. La band di oggi nasce agli inizi degli anni ‘80 in California quando James Hetfield, chitarrista, già in alcuni gruppi, incontra Lars Ulrich, batterista di origini danesi. Ulrich è amico di Brian Slagel, che nello stesso periodo stava fondando una etichetta musicale e una rivista: i due decisero di chiamare rivista e etichetta Metal Blade, e la band Metallica. Per Slagel scrivono Hit The Lights che finisce nella seminale compilatioin Metal Massacre Vol. I (1982) che viene considerata l’alba del thrash metal: riff allucinanti e allucinati, batteria che picchia fortissima, una velocità di esecuzione vicina a quella della luce. I Metallica si candidano ad esserne i paladini, quando nel 1982 con l’arrivo di Dave Mustaine e Ron McGovney il gruppo inizia a suonare da spalla a grandi gruppi durante i concerti, incidendo una demo di No Life ‘Til Leather, che diventerà un brano leggendario nonostante non fosse mai stata ufficialmente pubblicata. McGovney se ne va, sostituito da Cliff Burton, e così fa pure Mustaine, che però ha già imparato abbastanza per fondare i Megadeth, altro futuro gruppo culto del thrash. Viene consigliato al gruppo un funambolico chitarrista, Kirk Hammett, da allora pilastro sonoro della band. Tutto è pronto per l’esordio discografico, che arriva con Kill ‘Em All (1983): una bomba per potenza sonora, un suono cattivo e fulminante nelle hit Jump In The Fire, Hit The Lights, Seek And Destroy, Metal Militia: é nata una stella. Nel 1984, già al secondo disco, inizia un lento processo di cambiamento, con il durissimo Ride The Lighting, che contiene sempre la solita granitica musica thrash ma i testi iniziano ad essere più profondi, indagano sulla vita giovanile ed iniziano a sfoderare citazioni colte come in Call Of Ktulu, che omaggia il gotico di H.P. Lovencraft. Passano alla Elektra, e nel 1986, Master Of Puppets li proclama eroi mondiali del metal. Disco che apre alla melodia, dimostrando che oltre al rumore sanno sia suonare che cantare, e ormai i loro concerti riempiono gli stadi, con nuovi inni tipo Welcome Home (Sanatorium). Lo stesso discorso si riscontra con ...And Justice For All (1988), prodotto insieme a Michael Barbiero, Steve Thompson e Flemming Rasmussens, con il nuovo bassista Jason Newsted, dove compare la prima ballata che farà storcere il naso ai puristi, One. Dopo un grande tour mondiale, che li fa diventare ancora più popolari, i quattro chiamano a dirigere Bob Rock, che cambia radicalmente il loro modo di lavorare: non più parti suonate da soli e poi missate, ma registrazioni in presa diretta, un controllo corale del lavoro di scrittura di Hetfield e Ulrich, un’opera di perfezionamento sonoro che portò l’album a tre completi rimissaggi, con un costo di produzione che superò il milione di dollari. Nell’ottobre del 1991, esce Metallica, che subito viene ribattezzato Black Album per via della copertina totalmente nera, dove compare il serpente della bandiera di Gadsden, simbolo della Rivoluzione Americana del 1776. L’album è più maturo, diviene bandiera del nuovo heavy metal, smussando i toni ed i tempi del thrash e aumentando le parti melodiche. Basta l’intro e il riff micidiale della stupenda Enter Sandman (in omaggio al personaggio della graphic novel di Neil Gaiman) per sancire il passaggio alla maturità, così come l’assolo di Hetfield in Sad But True, le power ballad come The Unforgiven, il portentoso suono di Wherever I May Roam, divenuta famosissima. Don’t Tread On Me, che riprende il motto della bandiera di Gadsden, per molto tempo fu pensata una canzone pro guerra (si era nel periodo della Guerra del Golfo), diviene uno dei momenti clou dei live, che diventeranno oceanici. Ma il tocco che farò gridare allo scandalo i fan della prima ora è la sofferta e magnetica Nothing Else Matters, che li farà diventare star del rock. L’album viene ripudiato da chi li seguiva già, ma diviene uno dei più grandi successi di tutti i tempi, avendo venduto decine di milioni di copie in tutto il mondo. Apro qui una parentesi sulle critiche, piovute anche da loro colleghi, sul fatto che si sono “venduti”, critica che trovo per molti versi inaccettabile: si può tranquillamente fare una critica estetica al lavoro, e fin qui nulla da dire. Ma accusare una band che aveva già venduto decine di milioni di copie di essersi “venduta” quando già allora facevano questo di mestiere, per lo più al massimo livello, è la critica meno incisiva possibile, che tra l’altro si scaglia con la libertà, di qualsiasi artista, di sperimentare ciò che vuole. I Metallica sentirono tantissimo le tensioni dei cambi portati da questo album, soprattutto in fase di costruzione, tanto che tre dei 4 divorziarono dalle loro mogli. Bob Rock fu accusato di essere il maestro della svendita, un po’ come lo fu Teo Macero per Bitches’ Brew di Miles Davis. I Metallica tra l’altro non scriveranno niente di paragonabile, tranne lo stupendo S&M (1999) dove rifanno i classici, soprattutto del Black Album, in versione orchestrale con la Filarmonica di San Francisco diretta da Michael Kamen. Un’altra offesa per molti, per altri un modo di reinventarsi e per fare esperienze.

O Corpo Não É Metáfora 19 a 22 de setembro Sala Lima Barreto (99 lugares) Grátis

Uma retrospectiva da diretora e artista visual Barbara Hammer (1939-2019), um dos maiores nomes nos Estados Unidos quando se trata de Cinema Queer e de cinema experimental. Ela é destaque entre as vanguardas americanas realizando mais de 40 filmes entre curtas e médias-metragens. O interesse de Barbara, quando iniciou os estudos de cinema na Universidade de São Francisco, era usufruir do experimentalismo para discutir assuntos tabus, como sexualidade feminina, orgasmos femininos e relações sexuais entre mulheres. Em uma entrevista, Barbara explica que antes de levar qualquer tipo de ativismo político para os filmes, ela quis explorar suas experiências pessoais e compartilhá-las.

“Dyketactics” (1974) foi seu filme de conclusão de curso na universidade e foi realizado por uma vontade de transpor a sensação do orgasmo entre duas mulheres. Este acabou sendo o primeiro filme com interações lésbicas interpretado por lésbicas. A descoberta sexual de Barbara converge com o início de sua carreira como cineasta. Seus filmes passaram a ser um estudo pessoal da própria sexualidade, explorando um formato que vai além do documentário ou da ficção, transitando entre o filme ensaio e o cinema experimental.

A 1ª Mostra Cine Brasil Experimental tem como foco os cinemas experimentais do Brasil e da América Latina de ontem e hoje. Dentro de seu eixo histórico, a mostra apresenta alguns filmes importantes dessas cinematografias que foram recentemente restaurados ou digitalizados, tais como “ORG” (1967-1978), de Fernando Birri; “Lupe”, de Jose Rodriguez-Soltero; curtas-metragens do mexicano radicado na França Teo Hernandez; e curtas-metragens do francês radicado no Brasil Raymond Chauvin.

A mostra também fará uma homenagem aos cineastas Vivian Ostrovsky e Luiz Rosemberg Filho. Em seu foco contemporâneo, serão exibidos filmes das cineastas Ana Vaz, Letícia Ramos e Louise Botkay.

A peça conta a história de Brian. Depois de uma operação logo após o nascimento, em que seu pênis é cauterizado, ele é submetido a uma redesignação sexual e passa a ser educado como menina: Brenda. Organizado por Taciana Barros e Paulo Lepetit, o show “A Nossa Onda de Amor Não Há Quem Corte” é uma homenagem ao compositor, jornalista, poeta, DJ, agitador cultural e visionário Júlio Barroso, criador da Gang 90 & Absurdettes, cuja morte aconteceu há 35 anos.

É uma deliciosa viagem pelas canções e hits dos discos do grupo, e esta formação mescla a formação original com artistas do cenário atual, com Taciana Barros (voz e piano), Paulo Lepetit (baixo), Gilvan Gomes (guitarra), Beto Firmino (teclados e voz), Michelle Abu (bateria) e o auxílio luxuoso das incríveis cantoras Bianca Jordhão e Elô Paixão (vocais).

5 settembre Rad 1 (new entry) Band di lungo corso, tra le più seguite, i Rad 1 nascono nel 2001 dall'unione di alcuni membri dei MisterX insieme ai membri della Paola Turci band. Della formazione originale rimangono Cesare "Rad" Zanotti (voce e chitarra) e Mario "Il Fabbro" Zapparoli (batteria e cori). A loro negli anni si sono aggiunti altri tre musicisti d'eccezione: alle tastiere Francesco "Nillo" Vernillo (Solidamor, 4U, TGP, ecc…), al basso Roberto Galli (Spagna, Tozzi, Ritchie Kotzen.) e, alla chitarra, il direttore Marco Santaniello. Maestri della rivisitazione, spaziano da Queen a Metallica fino a medley folli, come l'ormai noto "Mix Pazzo".

6 settembre Guitar Mania E' un Tributo alle leggende della chitarra elettrica formato da grandi professionisti delle sei corde e non solo. Infatti i Guitar Mania sono formato da Fabrizio Kiarelli, chitarra e voce per artisti come Dolce Nera, Tricarico e New Trolls. Alla batteria c'è invece Marco "Nano" Orsi (Franco Battiato, Enrico Ruggeri, Ron, Marco Masini…). Al basso e voce invece invece c'è Alberto Bollati (Paola Turci, Mike Terrana, Paul Gilbert) mentre come ospite fisso c'è pure Luigi Schiavone, chitarra elettrica e coautore di tanti brani di Enrico Ruggeri. La band nasce intorno ai grandi capolavori del rock e della chitarra. Queste opere d'arte, le canzoni, sono un patrimonio da diffondere e conservare. Lo show dei Guitar Mania celebra le grandi opere di David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Angus Young (AC/DC), Brian May, (Queen), Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, The Eagles, BB King, Chuck Berry, e molti altri. Un sogno ad occhi aperti per tutti gli amanti e gli appassionati della musica immortale... rock e non solo.

7 settembre Jovanotte I Jovanotte, ossia Thom, Teo, Gimmo, Ste e Ricky, nei loro spettacoli, partono da "La mia moto" fino a "Tutto l'amore che ho", per arrivare alla raccolta Backup e ai successi più recenti del Lorenzo nazionale. Un cammino lungo due ore per riscoprire tutti i successi più emozionati di Jovanotti. Carico, energetico, frizzante, divertente, il percorso ad ostacoli attraverso la lunga carriera del cantante-rapper toscano, conosce un solo imperativo: saltare e cantare dall'inizio alla fine... che è una figata!

8 settembre Exes Cover band tra le più scatenate d'Italia, gli Exes, nei loro spettacoli, escono dai canoni tradizionali, adattandosi ad ogni contesto. Un concerto degli eXeS è carisma, affiatamento, impatto scenico e cura dei minimi particolari. La band ha un sound d'impatto carico di energia. Il gruppo ha alle spalle più di di 400 concerti dal vivo, solo nel periodo che va dal 2007 al 2010. Tra i brani originali spicca "La tua malattia", con ci la band si è aggiudicata la vittoria del prestigioso concorso di scouting nazionale "Pop Rock Contest" edizione 2007, poi registrato con la produzione artistica di Massimo Varini (Nek, Pausini, Adriano Celentano e tanti altri).

9 settembre Gary Baldi Bros Il repertorio dei Gary Baldi Bros si snoda tra i grandi successi dance degli anni '90, revival, pop commerciale e vere e proprie acrobazie musicali (qui proposte in chiave acustica). Completano il tutto i costumi e l'energia dirompente dei suoi 6 componenti. Ma chi sono veramente i Gary Baldi Bros? Vale la pena raccontarlo con una storia, riportata anche sulla loro seguitissima pagina Facebook. Che inizia con una madre che mette al mondo 6 fratelli gemelli, all'apparenza diversi ma uguali in tutto. Un giorno sulla terra cominciò una danza tribale al ritmo di una musica lontana. Un giorno una luce si stagliò all'orizzonte... ed ecco il segnale! Una famiglia al servizio del pianeta, pronta a mettere in scena una perfetta miscela di musica rock, dance e divertimento.

10 settembre Capitolo Zero (Tributo a Renato Zero) (new entry) E' una tra le più affermate e riconosciute cover band di Renato Zero in tutta Italia. L'attuale formazione nasce nel 2010 da un'idea di Patrizio Sinibaldi (vocalist) e dall'incontro di musicisti provenienti da importanti esperienze con una forte attività professionale che suonano esclusivamente dal vivo. Capitolo Zero ripropone fedelmente lo spettacolo musicale e scenografico del Tour live 2004 ed è molto attenta al look e alla presentazione dei brani.Grande attenzione viene dedicata, inoltre, alla creazione dei costumi di scena. Il risultato è uno spettacolo carico di energia e con una qualità artistica piuttosto elevata.

11 settembre Banda Liga, tributo a Ligabue La Bandaliga è tra le tribute band dedicate a Luciano Ligabue da più tempo in attività. Nata nel 2000, è oggi composta da Simone Solari e Marco Bruschi, che sono fondatori ed ideatori della Bandaliga, Valter Pavana Bonetti, e gli ultimi arrivati, Max Cottafavi e Michele Minneci. Nel momento in cui la formazione prende vita, il nome è in realtà Bandaloma. Dopo un anno e mezzo di attività, avviene il primo ed unico cambiamento e, dunque, il progetto diventa Bandaliga - Tributo a Ligabue. Seguiranno oltre 1000 concerti, svariate apparizioni radiofoniche e televisive, citazioni su quotidiani di settore e nazionali ed un tour nei locali praticamente infinito.

12 settembre Max Pezzali Tribute Ad oggi i numerosi concerti nei più importanti locali italiani registrano regolarmente il tutto esaurito, così come le feste in piazza che lo hanno avvicinato ad un pubblico vasto ed incredibilmente eterogeneo. Due ore di grandi successi in uno show di notevole impatto emozionale. Dall'ultima hit estiva "Le canzoni alla radio" fino ai classici con gli 883, da "Come mai" a "Sei un mito a "Una canzone d'amore", il viaggio musicale dei Max Pezzali Tribute è sempre accompagnato da contributi video. Completano il tutto, la somiglianza vocale e la bravura del cantante, nonché la collaborazione con alcuni dei musicisti che hanno suonato con Max Pezzali.

13 settembre Ostetrika Gamberini (new entry) La band formatasi nel 1996 ha all'attivo più di 1500 concerti con una media di ben 140 eventi all'anno nei più importanti locali e Festival del Nord Italia. E' una cover band dalla grande personalità e spesso collabora con brand importanti (Lovable, Ducati, Nike, Datch, Automatic, Diadora). Il 2013 vede la partecipazione del leader Timothy (chitarra e voce) nel Talent televisivo "The Voice of Italy" in onda su Rai Due da febbraio a fine maggio. Il secondo posto assoluto gli permette di ottenere un contratto discografico con la casa discografica Universal, e una collaborazione con Diadora come Testimonial. Gli Ostetrika Gamberini hanno incisco anche diversi dischi, che hanno avuto ottimi risultati sulle radio e sugli store musicali. Il loro nuovo singolo per l'estate 2017 si chiama "Nudi e perpendicolari".

14 settembre Blascover (tributo a Vasco Rossi) + Maurizio Solieri (new entry) "I Blascover calcano il "Fronte del Palco", onorando con professionalità il piu' grande rocker Italiano: Vasco Rossi". Questa la frase con cui si presentano sul loro sito… e questa volta sul palco con loro hanno pure Maurizio Solieri, mitica chitarra solista di Vasco e recente protagonista di Modena Park, il mega concerto da 230.000 persone. Nato il 28 aprile 1953 a Concordia sulla Secchia, Solieri a 10 anni si trova fra le mani una chitarra acustica Eko, ed è amore a prima vista. Completamente autodidatta, nel '77 conosce Vasco Rossi. Da qui ha inizio un lungo sodalizio musicale, prima come conduttore radiofonico, poi come musicista e autore di molte delle più belle canzoni di Vasco, soprattutto negli anni '80 ma non solo (tra le tante ha scritto la musica di Canzone, Ridere di te, Dormi dormi e Lo show). Migliaia di concerti in Italia e nel mondo, chitarrista in molti dischi Vasco e dei suoi tour, lo storico sodalizio col rocker di Zocca non avrà mai fine. E infatti Solieri era sul palco di Modena Park, nell'estate 2017.

15 settembre Vinile 45 + Villa Jacob Sewit I Vinile 45 sono una cover band scatenata che fa Rap'n'Roll, ovvero ripropone con la sua energia i maggiori successi del panorama rap e rock. La loro scaletta comprende diversi generi musicali, e contiene solo grandi successi nazionali ed internazionali. Questi sono alcuni dei tantissimi artisti di cui i Vinile 45 ripropongono dal vivo i grandi successi: Caparezza, Lorenzo Jovanotti, Neffa, Fabri Fibra, Articolo 31, Black Eyed Peas, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Bob Sinclar, David Guetta… I Vinile 45 sono perfetti per un party zero noia! Per questo concerto con loro sul palco c'è anche Sewit Villa jacob, artista che sta accompagnando proprio in questo periodo in tour Fedez e J-Ax.

16 settembre Super Up Super Up è una band composta da 4 artisti in grado di entusiasmare il pubblico come pochi. Con la loro decennale esperienza sui palchi di tutta Italia ed Europa, il quartetto milanese dà vita ad uno show dinamico, divertente ed emozionante, qualsiasi sia il contesto. La band è formata da Lallo Visconte, fondatore, bassista e showman dal carisma travolgente; Sergio Ratti, già batterista di Maurizio Vandelli, Radio Noiz, Senit e molti altri; Luca 'Ruben' Vaghi, chitarrista e già collaboratore di Gianluca Grignani, Loredana Bertè; Leonardo Proglio, giovane cantante e autore piemontese in carica alla Sugar.
