Tracking Dumas Walker!
Many of us from my generation can shout out the line, “We’ll get a slaw-burger, friesAnd a bottle of Ski, Bring it on out to my baby and me!” to the song, “Dumas Walker”. The popular song came from the Kentucky Headhunters’ No. 2 country album, “Pickin’ on Nashville”. “Dumas Walker followed their previous hit, “Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine.” The song was written by the Kentucky Headhunters.…

Sierra Hull Gets Her Spot on Tennessee Music Pathways
- “I’m just so extremely honored,” Hull says
Sierra Hull is enshrined on the Tennessee Music Pathways.
Hull was selected to represent Pickett County in 2019, but the ceremony was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Unveiled Aug. 16, Hull’s marker is along Highway 111 in Hull’s birthplace of Byrdstown.
“We are so proud of her and excited to see where life will take her,” the Byrdstown-Pickett County Chamber of Commerce said in a statement.
Hull returned home to the place where “I’ve always felt loved and supported” for the unveiling and a concert.
“I’m just so extremely honored,” she said in a statement.
“I wouldn’t be who I am today without this place and these people,” Hull added. “No matter how many years pass, it will forever be home.”

How free online courses from MIT can “transform the future of the world”
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/how-free-online-courses-from-mit-can-transform-the-future-of-the-world/
How free online courses from MIT can “transform the future of the world”
From full introductory courses in engineering, psychology, and computer science to lectures about financial concepts, linguistics, and music, the MIT OpenCourseWare YouTube channel has it all — offering millions of learners around the world a pathway to develop new skills and broaden their knowledge base with free offerings from MIT educators.
“I believe OpenCourseWare and Open Learning resources will transform the future of the world for the better — in financial markets I know it already has,” says Michael Pilgreen, a sculptor, painter, and poet from Memphis, Tennessee, who discovered OpenCourseWare when he found himself unemployed in 2020 and used it to jumpstart a new career on Wall Street.
After watching several lectures about finance, computer science, programming, mathematics, and algorithms on the OpenCourseWare YouTube channel and website, Pilgreen enrolled in the MITx MicroMasters program in finance. He is now a business operations specialist for the Jameel World Education Lab at MIT Open Learning, where he helps the lab bring MIT ideas and know-how to educational innovators worldwide.
“MIT OpenCourseWare opens the doors to conversations that were previously closed to learners by geography, time, and class,” Pilgreen says. “As an open learner, I was able to leverage the best instructors in the world from my living room, and turn my time being unemployed into a productive period acquiring the skills I needed to work on Wall Street.”
OpenCourseWare is the brainchild of MIT faculty members. The platform was launched in 2001 when the age of digital sharing was just getting started, establishing MIT as the first higher education institution to make educational resources freely available to learners regardless of geographical location or institutional affiliation. Four years later in 2005, OpenCourseWare created a YouTube channel to further its commitment to accessibility and lifelong learning.
Today, OpenCourseWare — part of MIT Open Learning — remains a global model for open sharing in higher education, with an open license that allows the remix and reuse of its educational resources. OpenCourseWare offers materials on its website from more than 2,500 courses that span the MIT undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Educational resources include syllabi, lecture notes, problem sets, assignments, audiovisual content, and insights.
“We almost take for granted the idea that an enormous amount of outstanding educational content is available to anyone in the world with an internet connection,” says MIT President Sally Kornbluth. “Yet, the fact that this is now the norm has a great deal to do with a groundbreaking project launched at MIT in 2001. OpenCourseWare changed the landscape of education, and it continues to inspire students, teachers, and lifelong learners around the globe to follow their curiosity wherever it leads.”
Curt Newton, OpenCourseWare’s publication director, says the platform inspires millions of curious and motivated learners every year. With over 5 million subscribers and 430 million views, OpenCourseWare stands out as the largest .edu YouTube channel. The channel opens a window into MIT classrooms, giving learners the opportunity to pursue their interests, develop new skills, and even switch careers.
“Videos on our YouTube channel have proven to be an especially effective meeting place,” Newton says. “From introductions to computer programming and the human brain to what it’s like to pilot an advanced jet aircraft, these videos are both a complete learning experience in themselves and an entry into even more expansive worlds of learning found on the OpenCourseWare website.”
Emmanuel Kasigazi, an entrepreneur from Uganda, turned to YouTube during the Covid-19 lockdowns and found hundreds of complete lectures on the OpenCourseWare YouTube channel. He explored psychology, cloud computing, data science, and artificial intelligence.
“The channel opened my eyes to something I didn’t know was reachable,” Kasigazi says. “The psychology classes I took are 24 episodes; each episode is around 40 minutes. That’s a season of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ It’s amazing that I could spend the same amount of time on two different things, but one of them would change my life, my mindset, and the other would just give me a small dopamine boost.”
Play video
During his learning journey, Kasigazi also gained a community of open learners. He has teamed up with Pilgreen to shine light on the educational adventures of fellow OpenCourseWare learners. The duo is working on a podcast that will launch this fall.
“From the channel itself you get great value, but then you pull back the curtain and get to meet the people on the OpenCourseWare team, and it’s amazing,” Kasigazi says. “It’s incredible the people I get to talk to — all because I decided to watch something on YouTube. The most impactful thing I’ve gotten from this channel is the people I’ve met along the way and the things I’m learning.”
While learners get to expand their knowledge base through these free, publicly accessible videos, MIT faculty members preserve their knowledge for generations to come.
The late professor Patrick Winston’s foundational AI lectures have long been popular on OpenCourseWare. His “How to Speak” lecture, published on the OpenCourseWare YouTube channel in 2018, has become the most popular video on the channel with 18 million views. Winston’s annual talk, which had long been a revered event for the MIT community, has now helped millions of people improve their speaking abilities — from conversing with someone one-on-one to presenting research to nailing job interviews.
Gilbert Strang, a world-renowned mathematician, was one of the first professors to publish his lectures on OpenCourseWare. Today, his linear algebra courses have received more than 15 million visits on OpenCourseWare’s website and over 34 million views on YouTube.
Andrea Henshall, a retired major in the U.S. Air Force, credits her academic success to Strang’s lectures on OpenCourseWare — and other MIT open educational resources. Henshall discovered Strang’s videos after struggling during her first semester of her master’s program in aeronautics and astronautics at MIT. By the end of her master’s program, Henshall was getting A’s in all her courses. She is now pursuing a PhD at MIT.
Although Strang has recently retired from MIT after 63 years of teaching, his lessons will continue to be available online to learners in every country on Earth.
“Great teaching is timeless, from the insightful teaching of decades past to our newest video series — an introduction to using data to address cultural, social, economic, and policy questions, created by Sara Ellison and Nobel laureate Esther Duflo,” Newton says. “We’re honored to be preserving and sharing this knowledge for generations to come.”
MIT OpenCourseWare publishes new content regularly on its YouTube channel and website. Brett Paci, OpenCourseWare’s media publication manager, produces the podcast episodes and many of the video lectures published on the YouTube channel. He considers the channel a “gift to the world.”
“It’s very much in the spirit and mission of MIT to contribute to the global collective knowledge and facilitate learning,” Paci says. “It’s a mission we can be proud of.”

Minnesota's HSRA Leads the Way: Saving the Lives of Youth Via Hip-Hop
Tumblr media
The state of Minnesota is leading the way in demonstrating hip-hop's power to shape culture and save lives. Here's what they are doing. HSRA (Highschool of the Recording Arts: Invests in the Future Whitney Houston once crooned, " believed that children were our future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them the beauty they possess inside." And in Minnesota, David T.C. Ellis is doing just that. His creation, HSRA, affectionately known as Hip-hop High, stands as a testament to his commitment and the positive outcomes it has yielded. Over the years, Hip-hop High has indeed functioned as a beacon of hope for countless young individuals in Minnesota, making a significant impact on their lives and even, in some cases, saving them. The Difference Maker     HSRA. Image Source: HSRA How does one use education and music to save lives? They do so by developing a curriculum that reaches the student where they are at. And this is what Hip-hop High has mastered. Hip Hop High School isn't your typical educational institution. It's a public school with a distinctive mission of transforming its students' lives through a uniquely crafted curriculum. According to The 74, "HSRA teaches core subjects through a musical lens, enabling students to develop skills and agency to deal with real-world issues." The program's effectiveness is undeniably clear, and the testimonials of students like Cameron Keys underscore this. In fact, Keys enthusiastically attributes his life's transformation to the institution, going as far as to say it saved him. As The 74 records, according to Keys, "HSRA help put him on a pathway to where he is in life now — living in Tennessee with his wife and working a stable job as a Walmart manager." Ultimately, it's not astonishing to witness such remarkable outcomes. When a project is fueled by genuine passion and unwavering love, the results it produces are unquestionably powerful and impactful. Ellis's Dream: HSRA Interestingly, Ellis didn't initially set out to establish HSRA; rather, it emerged from his heartfelt desire to contribute positively to his community. According to HSRA, in 1996, Ellis endeavored to start a pilot program. It is noted, "Ellis started Studio 4 as a recording production studio." Amazingly, the youth came in droves. Recognizing the thirst in the community and seeing a young populace in need spurred him to stretch. Those seedlings of inspiration eventually led to the development of an "educational pilot program." So, in 1998, what began as a spark was fully manifested. And the HSRA continues to grow and be a haven in St. Paul, Minnesota. https://youtu.be/dbhTig4OpZU   Why This is Important Such a gesture stands out in the context of Hip-hop's 50th anniversary. In Ellis' work, he activates the fifth fundamental pillar of hip-hop, knowledge, one on which all others rest. He illustrates what hip-hop really means as a force of change and progress. As Midination highlights, Bambaataa's vision of hip-hop envisioned it as a catalyst for social change, a vision that emphasizes the importance of imparting knowledge, guiding individuals toward understanding, and facilitating practical implementation. This aligns perfectly with the mission and purpose of HSRA, which is dedicated to precisely these principles. So, at FM Hip Hop, we tip our hats to David TC Ellis for not only talking about change, but being the change. Written by: Renae Richardson Read the full article

10/31/2022 DAB Transcript
Lamentations 4:1-5:22, Hebrew 2:1-18, Psalms 103:1-22, Proverbs 26:23
Today is the 31st of October welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I can't believe it. It's the 31st day of October. So, this concludes our 10th month of a 12-month journey. And what a journey it has been. And on our journey through the Scriptures, we have made several transitions over the last couple of days. We’ve moved through and into new territory, which is where we find ourselves now. In the Old Testament we’re in the book of Lamentations. In the New Testament we have just begun the book of Hebrews, where we will camp out for little bit. And, so, let's dive in. We’re reading from the English Standard Version this week. Today, Lamentations, chapters 4 and 5.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for bringing us here to the very end of 10 months journeying through Your word together. We thank You for all the different transitions we've moved through over the last few days through Titus, and Philemon and now the book of Hebrews moving out of the book of Jeremiah and into and through and completing today the book of Lamentations. And we are looking forward to starting a brand-new month, the 11th month of the year tomorrow in brand-new territory in the Old Testament as we prepare to navigate through the book of Ezekiel. And, so, we thank You for where we are in this year and all that You have taught us from all different facets of the Scriptures. And we take this moment to just be grateful. 10 months every day step-by-step day by day through Your Scriptures has brought us here to this place in life and in community. And, so, Lord, we ask that You continue to lead us into all truth. Lead us forward. Reveal the narrow path that leads to life, that we may walk in it. And guide our steps on the pathways of righteousness, we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.
Announcements:
dailyaudiobible.com, that is homebase, that is where you find out what's going on around here. And as I mention often you can put that right in the palm of your hand with the Daily Audio Bible app, which you can download free from the app store that is connected to your device. And, so, check that out.
And what's going on around here is tomorrow, tomorrow is release date for a brand-new resource coming into the community here. We’ve been talking about it for almost two weeks. It’s called sleep, a contemplative journey and it is a resource similar to the previous recording like this that was called Heart, a contemplative journey, which is available now. This resource is made to create space and a large enough sonic space, as large of a sonic space as we have technology to create, this was created in spatial audio. And, so, very much looking forward to releasing this and for it to be a resource that creates space for rest and calm in your life. And, so, this will release tomorrow wherever it is that you get your music. You can preorder it today and it will show up tomorrow. Just search for sleep, a contemplative journey or you can search for Brian Hardin, my name, and you should be able to find it wherever you are in the world. And, so, check that out. Looking forward very much to tomorrow.
If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, if the mission here to bring the spoken word of God read fresh every day and offered freely to anyone who will listen anywhere on the planet any time of day or night, and to build community around that rhythm, if that is meaningful to you than thank you for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage at dailyaudiobible.com. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.
And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, you can hit the Hotline button in the app, that’s the little red button up at the top, looks like a Hotline just press that from anywhere in the world if you’re using the app or you can dial 877-942-4253.
And that’s it for today, and that’s it for this month. We have concluded 10 months together every single day and it has brought us to this point, and we will begin to turn into the home stretch as we begin a new month tomorrow. And as we begin that new month, I mentioned this before, like things start speeding up. Like, it won’t feel like that tomorrow but before November is over, we’ll be in full Christmas swing and the busiest most wonderful time of year. It’s a joyous time but it can also be a stressful time and that ultimately affects the way that we rest. And we want to be present, we want to be rested, we want to be alert, we want to be awake. And, so, looking forward to it very much.
I’m Brian I love you and I will be waiting for you here tomorrow.
Community Prayer and Praise:
Hey my fantabuloustic DAB fam this is Kingdom Seeker Daniel. Family it's day 269 of praying for our marriages and today I want to pray for James in Nebraska. Hey brother I heard your call concerning your wife Mary and I want to lift her up. So, family let's all gather around James and Mary. Father, we thank You that there's nothing You cannot do. You have all power. And God we're praying that You would step into Mary's world and bring healing to her soul. It is believed that she's been drinking excessively due to the loss of her dad. I mean…I'm praying that Lord You will resolve the hurt, resolve the pain, and walk her through the grief and help her to grieve properly. And I pray Lord that she would surrender her heart to You. God that's the first step that needs to take place. She needs to say yes to You. So, Lord will You bring her to the point of making a decision to follow Jesus? Holy Spirit, will You grab ahold of her heart in her mind and give her a breakthrough spiritually so that Lord she can walk out of the prison of alcohol and walk into the arms of Jesus Christ as Lord and savior? I pray for the son Dominic who's been affected by this and struggling with all of this. I pray that You would walk him through this…this…this circumstance that he's facing with his mom, and I pray that You would bring healing to James and Mary's marriage. Oh God would You restore what the enemy has ripped away? In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Hi DABbers, it's Marilyn calling from California. God bless you all. I just listened to October 26th and I wanted to call in and pray for the woman in Texas who's having a hard time getting out of bed after her car accident brought out some trauma. Lord I just hope that you can be with her and wrap your loving arms around her. Give her the comfort and the peace that she needs right now and know that it's OK to sometimes be in bed for a while and it's OK to feel the pain and that we will all be lifting her up in prayer and you will be right beside her as she faces this and goes through this. And we just want to lift her up to you and help her know that the healing is coming and there is a light at the end of this. And we just send lots of love and hope your way. I also wanted to thank Sparky for calling in with his kids. Pray for you Sparky and your wife all the time. So, thank you for sharing your kids too. Thank you Blind Tony for the beautiful poem that you read to us on the 26th as well. And also, Val, thank you for calling in and giving us an update about your shoulders. So glad to hear that you're doing better. And Renzo, always thinking about you and praying for you on your journey. You're so encouraging to all of us. And also, Sean in the UK been thinking about you and thinking about you on your journey battling addiction. And of course, thank you Brian, Jill, China and Ezekiel for everything that you do. You all bless me so much. Take care. Love you.
Hello, my DAB family this is Jamie in New Jersey standing on the word of God. I humbly ask you to please pray with me. Dear Father in heaven thank You that our lives are in Your hands. Thank You that You are sovereign. Thank You for Your love and that You will not withhold any good thing from us. We know that You are sovereign over all things and that You are at work in the world to bring forth salvation and righteousness according to Your perfect plan. Jesus, You hold all things together. You are the creator of all things. Everything belongs to You and is under Your authority. You are almighty. You are our fortress and our refuge. We are so thankful for Your sovereignty that guides, protects, and holds our lives together. Thank You that before even the creation of the world out of Your great love You sovereignly chose us to be Your children. We are humbled that we are known and loved by You. Thank You for revealing Yourself to us and drawing us into Your eternal Kingdom. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. Thank you for praying with me my brothers and sisters. It means the world to me that you would pray along with me. I ask that all of you would lift me up in prayer. I'm struggling with just a lot of thoughts of…I guess regret. So, help me, Lord. Help me, Lord. Pray for me my brothers and sisters. I love you all dearly. Have a good night.
Hello DAB family this is Brian from Hebrew Heights calling for urgent prayer for my son Mitchell who we believe was getting help. He's got mental illness, he's a drug addict, he is homeless, and he was getting help at a…at a mental place. Lord…Lord blessed him with that, and he got kicked out. Now he's on the street. He needs help. I don't know what help to give him. I'm at wits end. All I could do is turn him over to…to Jesus and ask him to be with him to bless him with the help that he needs, that he would not be homeless, and he would get the mental health that he needs and he would get the drug addiction help that he needs. I dropped him off at a motel yesterday at…at approximately 7 o'clock. I got…I got a phone call which I had slept through at 2:00 o'clock in the morning from the motel. So, Lord knows what's going on. So, please pray for Mitchell from…from Dayton OH that…that my son that he would get the help that he needs, and that God would lead me and his mother to know where to draw boundaries with him, that we would be safe and that he would be…get the help that he needs. Please pray for Mitchell.
Hi Daily Audio Bible I'm calling in to pray for Daniel, Rosie's grandson. Rosie I had a call the same night to go and rescue and pick her up, Catherine who I've called several times about. She's the homeless lady who…she could lose her life, but she drinks. She was in a halfway house and I had opened my home to her again with unconditional love. I cannot change her desires, but I can give her a home to let her know she's loved. She is saved. I truly believe that, that we have broken strongholds. So, I'm leaving this control. It is a blessing that God said He will complete the work that He started. Life or death we will be with the Lord. So, when I pray for Daniel, I pray for his safety. I pray for our emotions that You cover them in your blood and trust like a little child, that our desires to help and rescue people, You will let us know when and make us available for that time, we cannot control it nor do we want to. We leave it all in your capable hands. We love these people, and we want you to glorify yourself in their lives.
Good morning this is One Penny Saved from southwest Missouri, and I just wanted to say I'm so excited about this new sleep music journey that has been made available to us. I do want to say that I have…I've thought about calling it so many times because I suffered night traumas and can honestly say I don't remember when I got a good night's rest. And I'm like nearing 60 years old, but I did download or upload whatever you call it, Sneezing Jesus and Reframe by Brian Hardin and I listen to that sometimes when I go to bed at night until I can fall asleep. And I guess it's because listening to the word read by Brian for over 15 years it just brings me peace. And, so, I am so excited that we're going to have music added to this. And I'm just encouraging all of my DAB family to get this because I believe it's going to be an answer to prayer for me and I believe it for you too as well. Love you guys. Bye.

Meet Christelle Ancajas, organic chemist
1) What do you do?
I’m what you call a “synthetic organic chemist in training” since I’m currently a third-year PhD student in Chemistry. Research in our group includes the design of liposome systems for drug delivery applications and the synthesis of lipid probes for elucidating biological activities.
In my work, I design, synthesize, and characterize unnatural lipid substrates that can be fed to live cells to produce chemically functionalized versions of important lipids. I then perform various techniques to detect the abundance and localization of labeled lipid products using fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence-based thin layer chromatography, flow cytometry, and lipidomic mass spectrometry.
This research is important because certain lipid classes play important regulatory roles or are important biomarkers. While many detection methods are known for studying DNA, RNA, and proteins, tracking lipids is a particular challenge due to the constant interconversion between lipid species that are not directly encoded in the genome.
This area of research is exciting, and I think it’s time for us to shift some focus to look at a different class of biomolecules. We are really interested lipid metabolic pathways and its potential use for targeted delivery of drugs. Protein-lipid interactions is also a big area to explore.
2) Where do you work?
I’m pursuing my PhD in Chemistry at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville under the guidance of Dr. MIchael Best. I do most of my research in a typical synthetic organic chemistry lab and also spend hours conducting studies at other departments such as in a microbiology lab and an advanced microscopy-imaging center on campus.
Outside of research labs, you may find me in organic chemistry teaching labs or proctoring exams in lecture halls depending on the semester or assigned class for TA (teaching assistant) work.
 3) Tell us about the photos!
[Left:] Selfie with my hood- where all the cooking happens (top). I spend hours and hours using the confocal microscope (bottom).
[Right:] Selfie with my amazing labmates while at the neighboring Oak Ridge National Lab (top). Joined Bachata team and got to perform at a stage for the first time right before the pandemic hit in 2019 (bottom).
4) Tell us about your academic career path so far.
Elementary: Visayan Nazarene Bible College in Cebu, Philippines (2008) I was born to a dedicated field engineer (my father) and a passionate chemistry teacher (my mom).
High School: Bluestone High School and Governor’s School of Southside Virginia (2010-2014)
College: B.S. Chemistry at Randolph-Macon College (2014 - 2017) During my undergrad years, I was fortunate to conduct awesome research in two separate labs. While I spent most of my senior year working through a glove box (physical organic chemistry), I had a short research stint that involved cellular microscopy techniques as well as working with mice (cell biology). I graduated in 2017 before taking a gap year to complete my graduate program applications.
Current: Ph.D in Chemistry – Candidacy stage (2018 - present)
5) Anything else you’d like to share?
Outside of research, I have very diverse interests- mirroring the very nature of my research (Think jack of all trades, master of none if you recall the various areas of my work: organic synthesis, lipidomics, imaging, cell culture…)
For one, I love dancing as much as I love science. Play any type of music and you’ll see my foot tapping away. Particularly though, I enjoy social dancing (bachata and salsa). Second, I’m a language enthusiast. If time allows, I watch TV shows and podcasts in Spanish. Although first language attrition will never happen to me kay mag binisaya man gihapon ko pirmi (because I constantly still speak Bisaya), I try to listen to as much OPM as I can so I don’t lose touch with my Tagalog. I’m also a bigtime fangirl and love me a boyband with good harmonies. Some of my favorite bands are SB19, SHINee, and CNCO. All in all, these interests are part of my identity as a #PinoyScientist.
Lastly, for fellow scientists out there, research is humbling, and we encounter failures every day. But we do what we do because we love it! However, making mistakes over and over again and failed experiments day in and day out can be taxing to your motivation, self-confidence, and how you value yourself. It’s very easy to get your self-worth mixed up with your productivity level. The pursuit for knowledge and discovery is definitely not easy and motivation comes in waves. So, hang on to the extracurricular things outside of research- those little passions that bring you joy and light you up.
If you want to chat or follow along my PhD journey, I document my research life on my chemstagram account: @chemistelle

Nashville Ambient Ensemble - Cerulean - after a teaser last July the full album is out today on Centripetal Force
The Nashville Ambient Ensemble is based, as you may have guessed, in Nashville, Tennessee. Organized and led by electronic composer Michael Hix, the ensemble’s lineup is made up of some of the city’s most creative and innovative artists, many of whom have been heralded by Bandcamp as being part of an experimental music movement dubbed the “New Weird South.” Cerulean is comprised of six compositions that draw upon the strengths of all the musicians involved, particularly their ability to let space guide their path. This willingness to commit themselves to the margins of sound allows each artist the freedom to explore and develop the ethereal tone and character of each song. The resulting effect is most evident on selections like “Inga” and “Conversion,” as the ensemble’s careful balance of structure and improvisation carries over to the listening experience, transporting the listener to realms of mindful and meditative bliss. In addition to being committed to a Nashville ethos that values collective collaboration, Cerulean explores musical pathways with a distinctive Nashville sound, a unique approach amongst similar artists and releases. We believe this is what sets the Nashville Ambient Ensemble apart from their contemporaries and think that you will agree.
All compositions by Michael Hix, except "Cerulean" by Jack Silverman Cover art by Wendy Walker Silverman
Musicians: Cynthia Cárdenas, Michael Hix, Timon Kaple, Deli Paloma-Sisk, Kim Rueger, Luke Schneider, Jack Silverman

This is a very personal post for me. I never thought I would be making it, but I would like to share the trip I took with J exactly a year ago; I’ve spoken about this trip on a number of occasions and it is what really bonded us together. We’ve been inseparable ever since. J is not the kind of guy to open up easily, yet this trip was the very beginning of the both of us learning how to trust again.
I don’t like to share such personal details of our relationship, but it’s been a year since all of this took place and I kept it mostly quiet for that time; I’ve had the chance to hold this close to my heart and keep it only to my own knowledge, but now I would like to document it, as I’ve been looking back on it heavily today.
The rest will be under a cut, because there are pictures and I don’t want to clog everyone’s dash with useless info, photos and such if you don’t want to see. For those that read on, please enjoy.
In all of my life, I have never been away from my home for the holidays. Every Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day, I am never anywhere but home. Last Thanksgiving was a ‘spur of the moment’ kind of thing that came to fruition only a few months before the holiday.
I had been sick a week prior to the trip and J had remained with me throughout that time. I can’t say I am completely new to F/Os, though before joining this community I did not know that self-shipping had a “name” or that “F/O’s” is a term; I have never had another F/O stick by my side during an illness. I tend to push them out of my mind when I have a virus, but I learned quickly that J is persistent. He did not leave. I was completely alone for the entire day and feeling J there kept me from utterly falling apart.
After my illness, the very next week we were on our way to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. If you’ve never been there, it is extremely touristy and crowded, but I love it. It has been practically a second home to me for so long; my family and I used to go there every summer. We stopped a long while ago, but I was thrilled to finally be back in a place so familiar. I know where all the restaurants are, all the stores I like, the aquarium (which we visited!) and more.
Our first day there was not much because we had been traveling the whole way. We rented a bed and breakfast up in the mountains; it was a fifteen minute drive of terror to get there. There were no guard rails on the steep hill and nothing keeping us from a sheer drop every time we came up or down, but what was at the top made it all worth it. Our little apartment was perfect and the view was spectacular.
This was our place at the top of the mountain and the spiral staircase that led to the loft where I stayed with J:
Tumblr media
I could tell he felt safe up here in the middle of nowhere; I wanted to take him somewhere he wouldn’t be recognized. Within the hustle and bustle of the city, though, he had to be careful. He wore old clothes that he had saved that had been his, dark suspenders and black lace up shoes most days. This trip was the first time I saw him without his face paint. The point of the trip for us, was for us to be able to grow closer. J is a tough nut to crack, but we’ve known each other a long time; we got to know each other in a much different light on this trip.
This is the view from our balcony the first morning after we arrived:
Tumblr media
We achieved a kind of solitude up there that we never would have in the city. J doesn’t like the city, despite his adamant request that we continue to live there. He has such a recognizable face that he is only truly at ease in a place like this, with civilization miles away.
When we did go into town, we stood in line for donuts. Of course since it was Thanksgiving, it was swarming with crowds and crowds of people (J hated that and several times he thought someone had recognized him.) J is a sucker for sweet treats and he was thoroughly excited with the idea of donuts; I later took him into a candy store in the same venue and he behaved, well, as one might suspect. I think he shoved a bunch of rock candy into his pockets because when we got back to our apartment later I heard him crunching on something and we didn’t buy any chips.
This was where we stood in line for donuts (I got a glazed donut with white frosting and sprinkles and J had something called a ‘pillow’ which was basically a square-shaped donut with creme filling):
Tumblr media
We sat on a bench by the fountain and ate our donuts; J had his finished in about thirty seconds and was licking his fingers by the time I was on my third bite. That was the best food we had had there so far; the night before, we went out for pizza and it was horrible.
After we had had our donuts, J was ready to get away from the crowds; he felt like someone had been staring at him, so we headed out to the park for a while. J is not much of an outdoorsman, but he likes the solitude and that no one would be around to spot him. Everywhere we went, there were people, so J and I headed further back in the park where there was less of a chance to be around anyone. We got out and walked along a deserted pathway and stood on the edge of the creek as it rushed past us.
Here’s a photo from our walk:
Tumblr media
After that, we headed back into town for lunch. Before we went inside to sit down, J dug around in his luggage for a purple knitted hat of his and put it on so he’d be less recognizable and his identity would be concealed enough for us to sit down long enough to share a meal. We had Mexican food; I learned that J has a thing for tortillas and extremely spicy salsa (and that he’s a messy eater.) We had our food fast and I think J had a margarita or two, but his scars were attracting some unwanted negative attention and people were staring, so we left fast before he could say anything. We went and bought tickets to the aquarium, per my request.
Inside the aquarium was the first time J saw my childish side; I get super excited at aquariums and zoos because of all the animals and it reminds me of all the fun school trips I used to take when I was little. We saw all kinds of sea creatures. J was most fascinated with the sharks and the jellyfish, while I was busy looking at the sea turtles and string-rays. However, my favorite exhibit was the penguins. We stood and watched them for close to thirty minutes. The staff members were feeding them and the little penguins got so excited. One man held up his cup and straw to the glass and one little penguin tried to grab it!
J and I were shocked when we saw this sitting inside the medical facility’s window where they tend to the penguins (for those who don’t know, Burgess Meredith was the actor who played the Penguin in the original Batman television series with Adam West as Batman, Burt Ward as Robin and Cesar Romero as the Joker):
Tumblr media
We spent much of our time that day in the park after the aquarium trip and then we retired to our apartment at the top of the mountain and spent that night watching movies. That night was the night J told me the origin of his scars. He had never told anyone the full and completely truthful story and that was the first time he ever did and probably the last. This trip was full of ‘firsts’ for us; it was the first time we ever made love (watch him get pissed at me for saying that pffft.)
On Thanksgiving morning, J whipped us up some cinnamon rolls. It was a scene watching him try to use the oven; it was an extremely ancient appliance and he was dropping f-bombs left and right and I think he also burnt his hand on the pan. The only thing J will make correctly are things that come from a can, tin or otherwise are pre-made or sweets. In this case, we had a very decent breakfast:
Tumblr media
We spent the rest of that day in the park and then that evening, we traveled over to the next town for our dinner reservations. Even though we had reservations, there were so many people we still had to wait over an hour to be seated. It was cold and we were wedged into a tiny corner as we waited. There was nowhere to sit and so I leaned back against J; he rested his chin on top of my head and would occasionally tap on my shoulders along to the music coming through the overhead speakers.
When we were finally seated, we were brought several courses, the first being apple fritters and drinks (the highlight of the meal), then we had some soup and it was terrible, and finally we were brought the main course: turkey, ham, green beans, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce and dinner rolls. There was so much food and, spread out across even such a large table, it was unimaginable how we were expected to eat it all. J finished almost all the turkey and about half the ham (he didn’t eat all day so he could “save room” for the meat.) He went to town on the rolls and mashed potatoes as well. He kept sneering at the cranberries and watched me with disgust as I ate them. He threw a dinner roll at me across the table to get my attention and grinned when I looked at him; he had corn stuck in his teeth. he took his hat off halfway through dinner because it was warm inside the dining room and somehow he wound up with mashed potatoes in his hair.
Here’s our meal before J had ravaged it all 9utter chaos ensued after this photo was taken):
Tumblr media
Our last full day in Gatlinburg was fairly relaxed; we went into the city that morning, but it was even more crowded (it was a Friday) and J decided we’d better head out. We went into the park and started up one of the mountains. I let J drive and he drives like a maniac; we made such sharp turns I almost ended up out through the open window. He sped up the mountain and we quickly made it to the top. The view was breathtaking but J didn’t even blink. I know he had to have appreciated it as well, but he doesn’t make a big deal out of things. The farther up we went, the more deserted the lookout spots became and when we found ourselves alone, J scooped me into his arms and kissed me. Seeing tiny glimpses of his humanity was unsettling at first because I had never known him as such; J still finds ways to surprise me, even now.
This is the view we had at the top of the mountain:
Tumblr media
and this is the spot where J kissed me:
( Cameron: and she kissed me
Pat: Where?
Cameron: in the car )
Tumblr media
Little did we know that on the way down from the mountain, we would be sitting in the car for almost three hours stuck in traffic. We made the most of it; J wouldn’t let me turn on the radio for some reason, so I talked to him. He didn’t say much, but he listened. This was when I found out J was more of a listener unless he was in a playful mood.
When we got back to the apartment that night, we watched a Christmas movie together. I don’t fully embrace Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving - I owe it to all the holidays to give them equal time and attention (and I like Thanksgiving a lot.) No Christmas movies, music or decorating until after Thanksgiving. J kept talking through the entire movie and every time he laughed it scared me because he was so loud. It doesn’t bother me if he talks through movies because I do it too.
The next day, we packed our things and left to come back home. This is the view from outside our balcony on our last day:
Tumblr media
I keep coming back to the memory of this trip because it was the last trip I got to take before the start of Covid; no one knows when it will be safe to travel again or if it will even be next year. I miss when everyone was able to do so and we weren’t risking our health and safety as well as other people’s just by going out. Of all the trips I’ve taken, this one will always be special to me because of J; he was like a light in my life and he came in at the most opportune time.
I haven’t felt that happy in so long. I had been suffering greatly a few months prior to the trip, but because of him things were beginning to change. I might not be a part of this world if I hadn’t met him again at the time I had and I am lucky that I got to experience such a lively time in my life and all the little ways loving J has renewed my sense of self-love and awareness in the world and things around me.
This trip is one I owe to J, but also to myself; I felt aware of myself and my space in the world.
I have no idea how I talked J into making this trip with me, nor if I’ll ever convince him to come with me anywhere ever again, but I will hold the memories close to me forever and I’ll always look back on this time of the year as something special and happy.

Prompt: “Is that mistletoe?”
“It’s not Christmas without snow.” You grumbled, slightly disappointed . You were used to blankets of white covering fields, not twinkling city lights in seventy degree weather. Whilst you were glad to trade living in the middle of nothing-town way up north for the warm palm tree lined streets of California, you couldn’t help but miss the little things that your hometown offered; like snow.
“I know, but at least you don’t have to put up with your granny bugging you about when we’re getting married or if we’ll have kids.” Your boyfriend, Michael, offers as you walk up the pathway to your friends Christmas party. You hummed out in agreement. It was nice to have a few more weeks until your trip back home to introduce Mike to your extended family. You had no doubt they’d grill you over your gorgeous boyfriend, wanting to know every detail about him. You were grateful he’d be there by your side to make the interrogating easier.
Michael also was missing the snow. Being from a tiny town in Tennessee he was also used to snow coating everything in sight and much like you, he wasn’t thrilled about going home for the holidays. Staying in Cali together truely was a dream for you both. You couldn’t help the grin that suddenly arose to your face at the thought of spending your first holiday together. You glanced up at Michael to find him looking at the house before you. The holiday lights played across his handsome face, making his blue eyes twinkle and beard more noticeable in the night.
He took your hand as the front steps appeared before you, his warm, strong hand locking onto your much smaller one naturally. Your smile instinctively broadened at the act. The door was already open, the house filled with mingling people inside as drinks were passed around; music played through the home amidst friendly chatter. You were excited to see so many friendly faces.
“After you, my love.” He winked as you slid into the threshold before him. You only made it a few steps inside before one of your friends spotted you and gave you a tight hug along with a tipsy kiss on the cheek.
“Hi! Oh my gosh girl, you’ve gotta try the pretty red shots, they’re amazing!” Brittney gushed. Her bright blue eyes were slightly unfocused, bouncing around the room along with her blonde curls.
“I see. They must be good, you look like you’ve had a few.” You teased. Her eyes returned to yours, a large smile taking over her face.
“Yes! And they are excellent. Now if you’ll ‘scuse me, I’ve gotta go track down the bubbly. I don’t want to miss out,” she sounded as though she was going to continue, but never picked back up to do so.
“Get me a glass?!” You called after her. She rose a palm in acknowledgement before disappearing into a crowd.
“For you, m’lady.” You turned to find your boyfriend holding out a glass to you. During your encounter with Brittney, you hadn’t realized he snuck off and snagged a glass for each of you. You took hold of the flute carefully and thanked him as he clinked your glass against his. You watched his lips touch the glass and take a sip, you brought your glass to your lips to do the same. He took your arm with his and maneuvered you through the crowd, stopping off and on to chat with friends.
A short while later you found yourself near the staircase, champagne flute abandoned somewhere you can’t recall, laughing over something Michael has said. Your head tilts back as your eyes shut, laughing as his arm comes around you, bringing you chest to chest.
“I have a surprise for you.” His warm voice calls you back. You open your eyes to look up at him, a teasing smile playing on your lips.
“You’re joining Chip N’ Dales?” You tease, dragging your hands up over his muscular chest, across the collar of his shirt before resting around his neck. He chuckles warmly whilst glancing down at you.
“Oh you’d love that. No.” His lips place a soft kiss to your cheek. “Look up.” He whispers into your ear, warm breath tickling your skin. Glancing up, you spot a cluster of greenery.
“Is that mistletoe?” You utter, looking back into his blue eyes. “You romantic cheeseball.” You tease. He beams back at you, showing his perfect smile.
“You love it, admit it.” He insists, his hand coming up to cup your face as the other plants itself on the wall behind you. Slowly he backs you up against it before capturing your lips with his own.
“Maybe I do.” You admit before diving in again for another kiss. He pulls back with a smile.
“Oh, you do.” He confirms. You blush, knowing you’ve been caught. No longer can you claim the stereotypical mistletoe is a ‘pointless holiday tradition that should be abandoned’. You finally admit it; the damn thing has charm and is romantic.
“You win. I love the damn thing.” You admit defeat before gripping him suddenly and rising up to your toes to bring your lips roughly against his. Your sudden aggressiveness takes him by surprise. In a moment the rest of the room is forgotten as his hands take hold of your waist, holding you against him hungrily. He groans as you nibble at his bottom lip.
“That was hot.” He breaths out, causing your head to fall back as you laugh. He beams down at you before running his nose along your neck, causing goosebumps to rise along your skin. “We should leave. Right now.” He utters.
“Okay, let me just grab that mistletoe real quick!” You bolt from his arms, a teasing smile playing at your lips. You watch a look of hunger cross his face as he follows behind you,
“Please do!” He calls out, hot on your heels.

Dear Los Angeles, please say hello to Winifred Rae Brooks.
This 28 year old Nashville, Tennessee native is currently employed as a singer/songwriter at Empire Records, but when she isn't busy working you can find her writing music for others as well as herself, hiding away in the forest to connect to nature or singing at local open mic nights.
Friends say that she is compassionate, humble, and dependable, but the rumor mill says she can be a bit self-sabotaging, profectionist, and argumentative. We'll let you be the judge and jury.
So who is Winifred Brooks?
- She is 28 years old who currently resides in California. Winnie is also the second half to the Lewis Twins of Nashville, Tennessee. Growing up Winifred came from money. She had anything she could have asked for but it wasn’t how she pictured her life. Win had dreamed of being a star since she could remember. Her grandfather gave her a guitar at the age of 7. She learned how to play a 6 string before she entered the first grade. She comes from an Estranged family. Her father used to be her best friend. Her mother was her other half but she decided to give up following in her father's footsteps of working in politics and law; Lewis and Associates Law firm for music which caused  them to shunn  her. Her father didn't believe in the Hollywood lifestyle.  He made her choose which resulted in her cutting her parents off from her life. Her twin is the complete opposite of her. He's the perfect son. The man who would drop everything for his family if need be causing a strain between the two. He is the only family member in contact with Win at this time.
Everyone has at least one thing they don’t want anyone else to know. Something that might ruin their reputation, relationship or their lives if it ever got out and we've got the tea on Winifred!
- Winifred had an abortion when she was 21 years old. She got pregnant with West Michaelson. A hockey player she was in a serious on and off again relationship with. He was often out seen with different models causing a scene. It caused a lot of issues in their relationship. When Winnie found out she was pregnant with his kid, it came out he was currently cheating on her with a model. He was even on a trip with her at the time. Instead of telling him that she was pregnant. She ended up having an abortion without telling him. She still till this day hasn’t told anyone and it eats her alive. A lot of Winnie’s songs are clear pathways into how she felt about ending that pregnancy and how it still eats her alive today. Most of her fans believe it’s lost love but it’s not. Her song all too well, is a straight shot into her world with West. She thought they’d have that future together. It kills her still to this day. If it ever got out that she had an abortion she knows she’d be cancelled by a lot of her fans. Her dads platform is anti abortion and could ruin his run for senator. She also have to be in contact with West again and she doesn’t know if she’d be able to handle that.

T.G. Sheppard Honored With "Tennessee Music Pathways" Marker
Tumblr media
Country music legend and SiriusXM host T.G. Sheppard was honored by The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development with the unveiling of the “Tennessee Music Pathways” marker in his hometown of Humboldt, Tennessee. Earlier that morning, Sheppard served as Grand Marshall in the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival. After both events, at a special reception, Sheppard was also presented by the City of Humboldt’s Mayor, Marvin Sikes, and President of the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival and Humboldt Alderman, Shane Lynch with a proclamation, declaring May 12, 2023, T.G. Sheppard Day in Humboldt, Tennessee and announced that Eastend Drive would be named “T.G. Sheppard Way.” “Being from Humboldt, Tennessee is something I am very proud of and always have been,” shares T.G. Sheppard. “Some of my fondest memories are from growing up there. When I left home to chase this crazy dream, I always knew Humboldt was my home. It’s such an honor to have the Tennessee Music Pathways marker unveiled at Downtown Green Space Park and to have Eastend Drive named T.G. Sheppard Way. It was an additional honor to be the Grand Marshall in the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival and to be a guest speaker at the Governor's Luncheon, and to top it off, Mayor Sikes proclaimed May 12, 2023, as T.G. Sheppard Day. What an incredible day that I will always remember.” “I am honored and excited to have T.G. Read the full article
