Zhang Ruoyun is a HELL of an actor.
But also, on rewatch - so many what ifs. All our antagonists were so close to having Fan Xian out of their hair. He was going to marry Lin Waner and move back and be out of it all.
BUT
And so many other small things leading to this - all the fun and games and misunderstandings where Waner's brother thought she didn't want to marry FX and FX was unworthy and participated in the attempt and all that stemmed from that etc.
And the lack of any glory in death or any proper farewell. Teng Zijing is just dead. No glorious last words (only person there at the time was Fan Xian who was unconscious but even if he wasn't, he didn't say anything, he just died in an instant.)
And the rage.
One of the things that I love about Fan Xian is that he may be a joking, surprisingly easy going man but there is so much contained but all-consuming rage in him when the moment requires. He can be consumed by it, he will give himself to it.
And oh, the guts. The way he staggers off, barely able to grip a dagger, with a dislocated shoulder and dragging his leg, daring whoever tried to kill him to take another crack - because he's too angry to care.

Joy of Life S1 Ep 42 liveblogging
watching for the 1st time, so don't tell me secrets ;)
Fan Xian seems really sure he's the emperor's son. Hmmmm Do I feel confident the emperor likes him, as much as a selfish schemer of his kind can like anyone? Sure. Do I feel confident at this point that the emperor thinks FX is his illegitimate kid? IDK because this could be another cover and he was actually helping her hide something. I'm just not at the place yet where I am taking that as an irrefutable fact.
The look on FX's face when Xiao En says as long as he knows he's a Xiao. Good acting! You can see the compassion FX has for him. He's not only ruthless and vicious.
"Don't bury me. I don't want to be underground anymore." 😢😔
"I am sorry I am not your grandson. Sit tight. You won't be bothered anymore." All of his dialogue in this scene is simple but full of sincere feeling. FX is not as wholly dark as he thinks he is. What a fantastic, complex character. I really like him.
That secret was indeed underwhelming for me but Xiao En had a fantastic arc.
Chen Pingping always has like 5 reasons for anything he does. Love that about him.
LMAO Chen Pingping even set up things so evil Princess' plot ended up giving FX a chivalrous bestie. (He reminds me a lot of Korn, the mafia kingpin from Kinnporsche. Can't predict everything but makes great bets based on all the variables he can control and his understanding of people's hearts. Willing to risk it all for the reward.)
Hi Gao Baokun! Ohhhhhhhh now FX is on the trail of Chen Pingping's 5th Reason. Teng Zijing was set up to be in that village! Hand selected to be positioned into FX's life. Just a pawn.
Gao Baokun is just a random loser who got dragged into the mud (but wait--we already knew he didn't try to kill Teng Xijing's fam in the end, and that part was the Bureau? Or at least I thought we knew that.)
It's touching that after all FX still trusts Teng Zijing. His one true friend! ❤
ahhhhhhhh Fan Xian is super pissed at his uncles. Guys you may have miscalculated this. Like my beloved Korn from Kinnporsche, Chen Pingping & Emperor want it all and are betting big that they can have their power AND their chosen people. Or at least the Emperor really wants both. Korn won the day in that drama (tho fandom keeps punishing him in fanfic). We'll see if FX can eventually forgive.
His Majesty is actually calling it out that they say to each other & perhaps even to themselves that they see Fan Xian as their baby boy and yet.... I like the emperor for his self awareness and inner conflict about his hypocrisy
Does Fan Jian truly think of FX wholeheartedly as his foster son? Are Chen Pingping and His Majesty actually having real trust issues..? Remains to be seen.
We're back with Yan Bingyuan and FX admitting this was a test for him.
Who's Xiao En's real grandson? Yan Bingyuan? ....... LMAO that took the drama like 3 min to answer. Yep it's probably him.
nah don't tell Bingyuan any disabling shit before you are out of the country 🙈 this man is already like an anxious chihuahua
I believe the emperor sees what I do: that a fealty to Qing & determination to make it the most powerful does not necessarily = fealty to the current emperor. Saying Chen Pingping is dedicated to the best for the country does NOT read like perfect loyalty to His Majesty. It's not that he's against the emperor or FX and doesn't gaf, it's just that his obsession for the bigger goal is what it is. A common fear that cdrama royalty has to grapple with. They both hunger for personal loyalty & can't trust it.
oh is it Shen sister? She's way more fun than her erstwhile boyfriend, let her in!
lol that's right Bingyuan, give us nothing
FX just watching the drama because Bingyuan is too obvious
So..... Now Fan Xian wants to be the Investigations Bureau head and a top official.... to find out how mom really died and get revenge? 🤔

I love me some angst and this sounds like it would be killer so: qz lives (but no one else does), please and thank you. Anddd if I’m allowed to ask two!!! I would also like: yet another faking of death in the house :D
you can absolutely ask for two; i am always delighted to share!
qz lives (but no one else does)
this one was started as a "wouldn't it be fucked if" type au because @myhamartiaishubris wrote an au where YSS is the only one who lives. I currently have exactly two lines written for this and probably won't write more for a while at least so enjoy!
Qian Zhao wakes to the news that Sun Lang and the emperor are dead. He spares the emperor a brief, snarled “good riddance,” and then demands Shisan take him to Sun Lang’s grave.
yet another faking of death in the house
so this one is another JoL post-canon fixit-ish au. I have nothing actually written for this au beyond the ask that spawned it here, but if you don't want to read all that, here's the basic rundown: Shen-xiaojie fakes her death during the "betrayal" where yby stabs fx. She runs off and meets Grandma Fan and becomes a confident woman. Meanwhile, yby drags fx to the Teng Family Farm, where it's revealed that Teng Zijing was *also* faking his death (again).

Forward Guidance*
Today I offer a progress report on the Interest Rate Committee's efforts to restore investment stability for the benefit of the global markets and those that depend on them. My report must begin by acknowledging the reality that we have scant headroom for further interest rate increases without incurring the risk of significant deflation and we are entering, therefore, a period which calls for a careful balancing act. In particular, my colleagues and I are acutely aware that there is something of a queue at the liquidity window, which places artificial constraints on market activity. We continue to believe that we can only resolve these constraints by coordinating IRC decision-making with fiscal policy and public expenditure to maximise policy transmission and its impact on the economy.
We have noted the rising costs of essentials like food, housing, and transportation. To the extent that they are a reflection of the real economy, price movements are the responsibility of the Bank. Unless we address pressing concerns about the direction in which prices are moving consistently and with gusto, the economy will not work for everyone. If we fail, vulnerable members of society will be hit hardest. The Bank intends to address the issues we have identified using our entire suite of tools...and to use them to the fullest.
The Bank has recently diversified its portfolio of overseas assets and has invested in money market instruments denominated in the Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT). This has resulted in a modest increase in the size of the Bank's balance sheet.
In addition, the Bank has established a swap-line with the Central Bank of Jordan in order to provide liquidity support denominated in the Jordanian Dinar (JOD) to a small number of participants in the London markets who have substantial assets in the Middle East and who are currently experiencing liquidity disruption stemming from political developments in the region. This development does not require the Bank to increase the size of its balance sheet at this stage.
The Bank is currently looking to establish a swap line denominated in off-shore USD, Pesos or Bolivares to provide liquidity support to London market participants active in South America.
In light of the additional FX exposure to which these developments will give rise, the Bank recognises the need to schedule a regular suspension of trading in foreign assets, to act as "circuit breaker", which will reduce the risks associated with market volatility and allow the Bank's trading systems to be refreshed. Our current expectation is that such a suspension will be implemented on a fortnightly basis for 24-48 hours.
Returning to monetary policy, my colleagues and I are strongly committed to doing whatever is necessary to bring volatility under control but not in such a way as to create further risk in the markets by over-compensating for temporary market developments. After our last meeting, we noted that we anticipated that rate increases would be significant in the short-term but measured and sustainable over time. We believe that the time has come to place emphasis on "measured and sustainable" rather than "significant".
Monetary policy affects the economy and inflation with uncertain lags, and the full effects of our rapid tightening so far are only just beginning to be felt. Thus, it makes sense to moderate the pace of our rate increases as we approach the level of restraint that will be sufficient to bring inflation down. The time for moderating the pace of rate increases may come as soon as next week. Given our progress in tightening policy, the timing of that moderation is far less significant than the questions of how much further we will need to raise rates to control inflation, and the length of time it will be necessary to hold policy at a restrictive level. It is likely that restoring price stability will require holding policy at a restrictive level for some time. History cautions strongly against prematurely loosening policy. We will stay the course until the job is done.

The series follows the plight of teenage grime MC Dionne ( Chanelle 'Shystie' Scott ), as she tries to achieve her dream of obtaining a major-label record deal to help provide for her grandmother. He'll be digging deep into his bag of plates to play some of the most sought after tracks from back in the day, many of which coined the language of drum ’n’ bass but were forgotten or written out of official histories of the scene, talking through his life in drum 'n' bass from behind the record shop counter and on the roster of one of the great labels. Dubplate Drama is a British television drama series, created, written and directed by Luke Hyams, first broadcast on Channel 4 on 11 November 2005. The good people at Wordplay Magazine have gone back and selected their top highlights from the weekend and were kind enough to include my dubplate soundclash with the don Skitz as one of their picks. Shouts to the entire fun soaked situation.

@tardis-stowaway tagged me in a “get to know you better” meme, and I am always a sucker for an askmeme, so thank you!
favourite colour: I love a good, rich purple.
currently reading: apart from all the fic in the world? I’ve been REALLY bad about reading actual books since the pandemic started -- I’ll read like half a novel in one sitting and then ignore it for months for no particular reason. Yesterday I read a few chapters of “The Fated Sky”, which is the second book in the Lady Astronauts series by Mary Robinette Kowal. I really really enjoy it! I have no idea why I’ve left it sit untouched after started it several month ago! And now I’ll probably ignore it again in favor of fic for a while. (I think it’s the mobility thing -- I like to read CONSTANTLY, which means fic on my phone has a huge advantage because it goes with me everywhere, while a physical book feels more like a Specific Choice That I Am Making With My Time Now.)
last song: According to the playlist I was listening to yesterday, Vienna Teng’s “Momentum”. I only really listen to music when I’m out for a walk.
last series: I am working my way through FX’s Trust in fits and starts while my wife is out of town (because I know she would have ZERO interest in it), which means I should probably finish it this weekend. It’s very, very well done and also very intense, so I’ll binge a few episodes in a row and then not watch again for a week. But Luca Marinelli is indeed deliciously unhinged in it, as promised by the twelve thousand Primo gifsets I’ve already seen. (Real MVP of the series is Brendan Fraser, though, he’s a goddamn delight.)
last movie: Eternals, which I enjoyed a lot more than I was expecting! I like that it was so deeply character-driven in a way that the MCU has strayed away from lately; unfortunately, the leading characters were by far the least interesting to me. More Phastos and Makkari and Gilgamesh (and Kingo, though he had plenty of screentime as the primary comic foil), please. I still kinda resent the comparisons to Old Guard, which did the immortality and relationships far, far better, but Eternals is telling a completely different story, so that helps.
sweet, savory, or spicy: All are good, but also, sweet all the way.
currently working on: I’ve been blocked for over a month now -- basically I haven’t written anything since posting the purpose of art. There has been a lot of traumatic emotional upheaval in my wife’s family this past month, and while I’m not directly impacted, it’s been...simultaneously A Lot and long empty stretches of nothing all at once, since there’s nothing I can do about any of it and my wife has been halfway across the country for weeks to be with them while I’m just here alone pretending to be productive at work, and my mental health has been kind of crap. So, yeah. This week I’ve been trying to force myself to finish the Finn/Poe soulmark fic I abandoned over a year ago, since if I can’t manage any new creative energy I might as well slog away at something I’ve long since lost the spark for anyway, and I’ve made a little progress there -- shuffling a few things around, hammering out connective tissue between scene fragments I’d already written, coming up with a workable if uninspired outline for the last chapter. I’m hoping my need to be DONE with this fucking WIP will beat off depression brain enough to actually finish it. I hate having it hang over my head. But yeah. It’s been a fucking miserable month. Figures that the ONE perk of having the apartment to myself for weeks is having plenty of time to write, so of course my brain goes on strike and I can’t write a damn thing.
Tagging people is stressful. If you want to play along, consider yourself tagged!

This is the second time I legitimately bawled in this drama; the first was when Fan Xian was talking about death with Wan’er’s brother.
Like bawled and bawled. Over a character we only met a few episodes ago and who was largely an antagonist.
(Fan Xian answering him after the man is dead and can hear him no longer - ooof. And when he told Fan Xian (thinking FX was his grandson) not to seek revenge even as he was looking at the last minutes of the wreck of his life - double oooof.)
Also, all to set this up, to get the knowledge of the divine temple which is not even of any use to them, the Emperor and CPP ruined so many people - Teng Zijing and his family (his wife and child were supposed to be KILLED!!!!) and he was framed just so he’d have no choice but feel gratitude and be signed up as an assassin to attempt to kill and be converted bu Fan Xian, Guo Bakhun who, while I am not a fan, was a normal prideful young aristocrat living his normal life, not a family-destroying monster, who deserved to get beaten to a pulp and have his father arrested and family ruined, GBH’s family, Yan Bingyun (who was set up to accept false assassination orders and then blamed for his “failure” and sent to spy in Beiqi as punishment and then got tortured for God knows how long while CPP and the Emperor were planning the best time to send Fan Xian to check it out in no hurry as part of their plan), that martial artist who killed TZJ and was killed by Fan Xian, Wan’er’s brother who was pushed into trying to have an assassination, Xiao En and his adopted son and said son’s second in command, everything.  It all had flown down into so much death and pain and horror and for what?
Not to mention that Fan Xian himself could have died so many times; clearly the Emperor and CPP operated from “well, if he can’t survive the insane situations we put him in, ehhh, there are other kids” principle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They knew what Princess Royal was but let it go on and encouraged it because it helped their plans and set a bunch of other life-ruining plans into motion to boot.
I freaking hope Fan Xian rips out all their throats.

Hi!! I was the one who commented on your ao3! Is it possible for you to write an au where shen wan’er actually dies after getting stabbed by her brother? And how yan bingyun copes/regrets?
hello! this has absolutely not been sitting in my inbox for over a month, and i am absolutely not writing this directly into tumblr like a maniac when i should be working on homework.
anyway!
I'm going to be completely honest, my whole schtick is saving minor women from death so I'm going to modify this a little bit right off the bat by saying she's not actually dead, just faking her death and Yan Bingyun is not in on it. This has no real effect on YBY's side of things but it does mean that whoever saved her (Fan Xian probably) is real shifty by the end of the timeline. (This modification has the added bonus of my romantic shipper heart being satisfied at the end).
okay so. We're at the battle, right? And Shen-xiaojie is on the sidelines, watching the two men she loves most in the world trying to kill each other. And then her brother has her beloved knocked down and is about to stab him. So she does what any self-respecting minor character's love interest does in a cdrama--- she throws herself in front of the sword, taking the wound for herself and stopping the battle in its tracks. Yadda yadda yadda, canon plot happens. Fan Xian goes and saves her and they start back for Qing.
Here's where things diverge. (rest under the cut bc this got long)
So, this could go a few different ways, but the following is my favorite: Shen Wan'er wakes up, finds herself in a carriage on its way to Qing and comes to the completely reasonable conclusion that she is to be a hostage and summarily tortured for information she may have received from her brother. She decides "fuck that shit, I'm outta here" and sneaks away in the middle of the night. She has somehow timed this perfectly with Xie Bi'an's cornering of Fan Xian and Yan Bingyun, so the two of them are too distracted to notice that she's gone until they have bigger things to worry about. Thus, she is given up for dead.
(She is not dead--- she spends the rest of the fic wandering around future fantasy china, eventually ending up in Danzhou, where she meets Grandma Fan and learns to have some self-respect. After all the shenanigans in the capital have passed, Grandma Fan makes a visit and Shen-xiaojie meets YBY as a woman confident in herself)
Back to YBY. He's just had to help fake Fan Xian's death (bc until s2 comes out and tells us otherwise, he was working with Fan Xian). And then suddenly the girl he's not allowing himself to like is gone. She was badly injured (because of him), surrounded by foreign men (because of him), and in an unknown location (because of him).
His reaction at first is to put in a box with the rest of the emotions he's not allowing himself to feel (read: all of them). But throughout the fic, as YBY is bullied into caring about himself by Teng-furen and Fan Xian (bc he still takes FX to the Teng Family Farm and Hospital bc how can I not have my bamf Wen Yinhong in any au lbr), he starts to allow himself to think about the fact that he did, actually, like Shen Wan'er. Grief is not an emotion he is used to--- he would also be realizing that he maybe kinda sorta also cared for Teng Zijing. But by the end of the fic, he's maybe reached a sort of equilibrium in that he's not actively repressing everything anymore, but he's also not emotionally healthy, because Fan Xian and Wen Yinhong are many things but licensed therapists they are not.
(And then the end is the two of them reuniting and getting to restart their relationship on much more even footing for the both of them)
Anyway, I'm not sure if this was quite what you were asking, but I do Not have to time to write a full-fledged fic like this at the moment, so enjoy this ramble-y and un-edited plot summary!
