Marijus Aleksa - As They Are
Throughout his remarkable international career, Lithuanian drummer & producer Marijus Aleksa has established himself as a bonafide shaman of rhythm. From making his debut at the Vilnius Jazz Festival at the tender age of thirteen, he has grown into a stage partner of some of the world’s most celebrated stars (such as Keyon Harold, Grammy award winner Bill Laurance, Joe Armon Jones, Ashley Henry, Dennis Rollins, China Moses, Ben Marc, Anthony Joseph, Femi Temowo, Oscar Jerome). An ambitious drummer and percussionist, he relies on his technical prowess and visionary endeavours. Through his work as a heralded band leader, session musician and solo artist, his music is not unlike the works by the abstract expressionist painters: rich in colour, vivid, intuitive and hypnotising, traversing musical maps by blending the worlds of jazz, rock, world and electronic club music. With the concept of collage forming a central theme of the record, 23 people from different parts of the world (Lithuania / USA / UK / Cuba) each contributed to the creative flow of the musical creation, forming a rich sonic tapestry - formed of 3 years of recording and re-editing jam sessions, creating a spellbind final piece constructed from smaller pieces that in the first instance may have seemed incompatible. This sensibility was also applied to the track titles, which were created by segmenting common phrases and reforming them. The artwork was also created by Japanese collage artist Mt.Chills. Femi Temowo // From Akure to Soweto
The band on stage has barely played together but it's hard to tell. That's because the groove emanating from their instruments sounds too in sync and in time. In fact, had it not been for the confession of tonight's bandleader, Femi Temowo, not many in attendance would be privy to that anecdote. For today's multi-band musicians, spur-of-the-moment sets must be the standard. For the audience, it's a fascinating musical roulette wheel.
It's another episode of jazz re:freshed, one of London's longest-running live jazz and funk outlets and it's the first time forty5sixty has ventured to the platform's new home at Ninety One Living Room on Brick Lane.
It's a band featuring the likes of Sam Crowe (of Giants Are Real) on keys, the youthful LOX in the drummer's seat, and Moses Olukayode on talking and sakara drum duties, adding to Temowo's superb guitar work. Tonight's set reads like an ode to his place of birth, Akure in the southwest of Nigeria. Intertwining lyrics in English and Yoruba, Femi takes the audience back to his West African upbringing with songs like 'Abeg Jare', 'Ore' (Friend), and 'Bola'.
Having moved to London aged, Temowo was late to pick up the guitar at 17, and remarkably, his dedication to the craft saw him start playing professionally just four years later. Stints with saxophonist Soweto Kinch's quartet and as a session guitarist for an array of global artists whetted the appetite for Temowo's own compositions which arrived in due course. Mixing slick and melodic guitar chords, Temowo slides effortlessly between afrobeat, Nigerian highlife folk music, and fújì - a popular Yoruba musical genre.
Tonight represents new horizons for Femi Temowo and jazz re:freshed. New locations and new directions but always landing in the right pocket.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford upon Avon, Thursday 24th February 2022 This new production of theatre’s greatest rom-com boasts an ‘afro-futuristic’ setting – obviously influenced by Marvel’s Black Panther film! As a world unto itself, this ‘Messina’ works very well. Jemima Robinson’s set design is simple but exotic, futuristic and yet retro. I especially like…

British/Nigerian/Jamaican Alternative Pop RnB artist, Bianca Rose, returns with a new single written with and produced by Jake Isaac. Rose says 'Run and Hide' encourages us to feel our feelings, specifically around loss. Juxtaposing this melancholia with Jake Isaac's musicality has created a piece of music that provides a moment to both our feelings, and also be lifted out of them: to feel but not wallow. Fearlessness is one of Rose's life messages: systematically facing every fear until there is No Fear Here.
‘You know this is one of those songs where I didn’t know what I was writing about until I started writing it. The words became the idea. The lyrics flowed from a subconscious place, tapping into feelings of loss where emotions are so acute and all encompassing, that you want the pain to both leave and stay. The aftermath of loss can be confusing, but at the same time, past memories can be the guiding lights for the new road ahead’
In 2017, Bianca Rose released her debut album 'No Fear Here', which has to date received in excess of half a million streams, and was produced by critically acclaimed jazz musician and producer Femi Temowo (George Benson, Andrea Bocelli, Amy Winehouse, The Roots, ESKA & Soweto Kinch). Following the release, Bianca embarked on UK and European tours as well as continuing to write for herself and other artists. Bianca, a proud independent artist also co-founded a company I am Independent which serves to resource and support independent music artists, cross-pollinating advice and experiences from artists and music industry members alike. Bianca's live shows have included sets for Sofar Sounds, Tigmus, London Jazz and Festival, City Showcase, The Vortex and the CrimeJazz Festival in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. With additional performances for Playstation, OH Tv & radio play on Radio 1 and 1Xtra. As lyricist in the Ready Riters song writing collective, Bianca co-wrote X-Factor contestant Annastasia Baker's debut album, resulting in Annastasia's 2014 MOBO nomination.
Bianca's new single 'Run & Hide', produced by Jake Isaac marks a significant change in Bianca's musical direction. It's her most vibey track to date, introducing synth and heavy bass to create an alternative RnB track with melancholic undertones.

JAB - Currents EP - intense rhythms of 3-4 percussionists juxtaposed with the calming sounds of a string quartet, with a groovy bass underpinning it all
Currents is JAB’s latests contribution as he creates and arranges a perfect synergy of heavy percussion and epic strings for the worlds movers & shakers to get lost in, meditate with and move within. Orchestrated with the emotional journey the world was experiencing throughout 2020 in mind, Currents does the focused and joy- stirring work of calling us back into ourselves during a time we may need it most. Having spent most of 2019 on tour, the inspiration for this new project was borne from a conversation with a dancer about the connection between vibrations and movement. Coupled with the undeniable impact of a global pandemic and with racial injustice taking centre stage, JAB shifted the focus of his compositions from complex rhythms to displaying raw emotion, tapping into the shared inescapable rollercoaster experience of life in lockdown. With a deep desire to create a sound that defies expectations of “dance floor” club music.
All tracks written & produced by JAB JAB - Percussion (1,2,3,4), Vibraphone (1,2,3,4), Drums (1), Organ (3), String arrangment (1,2,3,4) Will Fry - Additional Percussion (1,2,3) Oli Savill - Additional Percussion (1,2) Nathan Allen - Drums (3) Marijus Aleksa - Drums (2,4) Sean Allen - Bass (1) Yves Fernandez - Bass (2) Alex Bonfanti - Bass (3) Femi Temowo - Guitar (4) Gavin Powell - Additional Organ (3) Lewis Wright - Additional Vibraphone (4) Tymon Janusiewicz - Additional Vibraphone (2) Tobie Tripp - Additional String Arrangement (2) Amika Strings (on all tracks): Laura Senior - Violin Simmy Singh - Violin Lucy Nolan - Viola Peggy Nolan - Cello + additional string arrangement (3,4)

Sona Jobarteh - Jarabi
Sona Jobarteh hails from a long West African tradition of Griots and kora players; her grandfather was the master Griot Amadu Bansang Jobarteh. Creating her own history, she has broken from the male-dominated kora tradition to become the family's first female virtuoso of the instrument. Here Sona Jobarteh performs the traditional Malian song, Jarabi, accompanied by Femi Temowo on guitar and percussionist Robert Fordjour.
