REVIEW | "Tegan and Sara: Junior High" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Junior high school is that time where one starts a finding their true selves. It’s a strange in-between place, where you are constantly conflicted between acting like a kid or an “adult”. But everyone has gone through this, from the most average of people to — in this case — a two twin sisters who’ve played to audiences all over the world. Tegan and Sara: Junior High tells the somewhat true story of the Quin sisters, with some relishing of the truth for the sake of the plot.
Although it was 1991 when Tegan and Sara were in middle school, this version of their story instead places the twins in the modern day. With their parents separated and their mom dating a new-but-nice guy, there’s already a bit of heaviness in the lives of the sisters. But upon entering junior high, both Tegan and Sara find their way to overcome obstacles, be it as a duo or on their separate paths. Of course, this also means that the sisters bump heads over the new people in their lives, especially when it comes to possible bullies and love interests.
It’s clear that one twin has it rougher than the other. Tegan’s shyness in the beginning makes it a struggle for her to make friends, whereas Sara easily gels with her classmates. But with them being twins, the weird questions start coming out, ranging from telepathy skills to, well, questioning their very existence. However, things get a little weird between the sisters when Avery enters their lives, a girl who bullies one but befriends another.
Much of Tegan and Sara: Junior High focuses on the duo’s first year in their new surroundings. They deal with their share of academic issues, their first bras, and experiencing puberty in the most awkward of ways. Going to see their original first friend Faiza acts as a comfort zone for both, but — as long-distance friendships go — they start drifting apart and changing in ways that make them look like a much different person from before. It’s also the time when the twins start figuring things out about themselves. Well…okay, one does, at the very least.

Middle School Monday: Tegan and Sara: Junior High by Tegan Quin & Sara Quin with illustrations by Tillie Walden
Tegan and Sara are identical twins who start growing apart as they enter junior high. The sisters are used to doing everything together, but as they take different opportunities and make different friends, they start to wonder … who are they when they’re not together?
This graphic novel blends fiction and autobiography, taking the authors’ childhoods and reimagining their story in the present day. It provides a sweet and heartfelt look at family problems, school problems, coming out, and evolving into the kind of person and the kind of friend you want to be. Tegan & Sara's unique perspective as sisters, twins, and friends is the backbone of this coming-of-age story.
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who enjoy graphic novels about families, friendship, and creativity!

Tegan & Sara: Junior High GN - Tegan & Sara Quin & Tillie Walden
Before the indie-pop duo Tegan & Sara took the world by storm, Tegan and Sara Quin were identical twins trying to find their place in a new home and new school. From first crushes to the perils of puberty, surviving junior high is something the sisters plan to face side-by-side, just like they always have. But growing up also means growing apart, as Tegan and Sara make different friends and take separate paths to understanding their queerness. For the first time ever, they ask who one sister is without the other. Set in the present-day, this fictionalized autobiography offers a glimpse at Tegan and Sara before they became icons, exploring their shifting sisterhood, their own experiences coming out, and the first steps of their musical journey. A prequel of sorts to their New York Times-bestselling adult memoir High School, it's the story of the people they are now, and how so many of the trials they faced in their youth not only brought them to music stardom, but to a rock-solid relationship with each other.
Tsugumi Project GN - ippatu
In the western Pacific Ocean floats an island archipelago, cut off from the world and full of mysteries: scientific secrets that some believe are best forgotten, decaying monuments to an era of human decadence two centuries gone, and strange, radioactive monsters that tear apart any human beings foolish enough to set foot there. Its name, spoken only in whispers: Japan. It's illegal to go near this dangerous place-but, after being torn from his family and convicted on a false charge, that's exactly where Leon has been sent. An experienced soldier of fortune, Leon is tasked with retrieving a powerful weapon called Tsugumi. Can they stay alive long enough to find this Tsugumi? Just what the hell is it, anyway, if that's even the right question? And does it have anything to do with the quiet, brutal girl with taloned feet who swoops in to save Leon's life?
Yokohama Station Fable GN Vol 1 - Yuba Isukari & Tatsuyuki Tanaka
All Hiroto has ever known is a life on a tiny coastal speck of Japan. Much of the country has been swallowed by Yokohama Station, a mysterious, ever-growing series of buildings that's been around for as long as anyone can remember. The few who live outside its many entrances have never seen Inside and know only rumors and legends of the station's interior. That all changes when Hiroto is given an 18 Ticket, a mysterious item that lets him enter the massive complex for five days. The young man has always sought a purpose, but the one he finds may not be the sort he'd hoped for...

2 out of 5 stars
Tegan and Sara are a musical duo that are twin sisters (which, I had no idea they were actually sisters, let alone twins before I started this book). This graphic novel is a tale that is inspired by their lives when they were tweens. As they were born in 1980, they definitely didn't have the internet or cell phones when they were tweens, so they decided to set this in modern times to try and hit that connection with the current generation.
They move to a new school and have to face the awkward stage of their lives where they're unsure of who they are, what they're going to do, who they should be friends with, on top of trying to be original and true to themselves while also being a "set" as people can't tell the differences between them.
Overall, it was a good story about puberty and bullying and friendship, but I felt like the way it was told was kinda chaotic? There was so much going on with each page that it was distracting and hard to keep track of the who was who--not just the twins, but their friends as well. The artist did try to give each twin their own color when they were having internal monologues, but I kept confusing which one was which and had to turn back.

1, 2, 3, and 4 for the book asks!
1: favorite book of all time?
AUGHHHHHH WHYYYYYYYYY?!???! Ahhh… it’s got to be… UM… THE INQUISITORS TALE BY ADAM GIDWITZ!!!!! Man. One of the most beautiful books I’ve ever had the fortune of reading. It’s a fictional tale of medieval France and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Literally one of the prettiest books I own because it’s ILLUMINATED!!! Like old scripts done by medieval monks! But instead of monks, it’s Hatem Aly, and he does a truly lovely job of enhancing the book with his illustrations. God. I think about this book all the time ok I used to read it once a month that’s how enchanting it is. I’ll never shut up about it and I’ll never stop loving it.
Also A Little Princess by Frances Hodgeson Burnett bc that book basically raised me <333
2: favorite book at the moment?
ooooh idk… I’ll say The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo for now bc it’s got so many beautiful stories and it’s also one of the prettiest books I own… it’s kind of a twisted fairytale anthology of sorts, remixing a little mermaid, beauty and the beast, the nutcracker + the velveteen rabbit, Hansel and Gretel, and also putting a twist on classic tropes and it’s LOVELYYYY (it’s also set in the Grishaverse so uh. check it out if yiu ever have the time <33)
3: most recent book added to your favorites?
AHHH!! I went to the library recently so I got to find new books and oughhh I have really good taste based off of covers apparently. It’s called Junior High and it’s by twins Tegan and Sara Quin, and it’s another middle-grade graphic novel! It’s a memoir of sorts about Tegan and Sara’s 7th grade year, and it’s illustrated by Tillie Walden (I LOVE TILLIE WALDEN SO MUCH AUGHHHHH) and it’s a really really cute coming-of-age book!! I cried 👍✨
4: a few books you’d recommend?
HAHAHAAA MY TIME HAS COME! look them up yourself bc I haven’t the time to go in detail about them all but trust me that they’re good books and don’t judge them off the cover only ☺️ Also I’m rating them out of 10 so you know how I feel about them!
Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World by Ashley Herring Blake - 12648/10
Queen of the Sea by Dylan Meconis - 10/10

📚 for me to grab the book nearest to me, flip to a random page, and use the first line of dialogue I see as a starter pg. 139 - "Junior High" graphic novel - Tegan Quin & Sara Quin
"I mean, I just get excited to hang out."
He's just trying to explain what's got him in such a cheery mood - especially since the other times he's bumped into Anaïs, he's been less than thrilled. Usually looking exhausted, or out of it... or that one time, covered in Lee's blood.
Maybe not his best moment.
"So any time someone's coming over... yeah, the whole day just feels a bit brighter." He explains, holding his coffee as he looks at the woman from where he's seated on a bench outside.

Middle School Monday: Tegan and Sara: Junior High by Tegan Quin & Sara Quin, Illustrated by Tillie Walden
As twin sisters Tegan and Sara start junior high school, they feel their lives going in different directions. But the discovery of their stepfather’s old guitar and their growing interest in writing and playing music helps to bring them closer together.
This is a fictional story set in the present day, but it’s inspired by the sisters’ childhood / teen years back in the 1990’s. It’s a sweet and heartfelt look at family problems, school problems, coming out, and evolving into the kind of person and the kind of friend you want to be. This book is being marketed as a “prequel of sorts” to their memoir called High School, which we recommended for teen and adult readers!
Tegan & Sara's unique perspective as sisters, twins, and friends is the backbone of this coming-of-age story. Give this graphic novel to older kids and younger teens who enjoy LGBT stories as well as books about families, friendship, music, and creativity!
