Play Time

“Woosh! Boom! Bam! Sergeant Jimothy reporting for duty!” Dahlia announced as she ran towards the table, making sure that the action figure's arms were raised so he could properly fly. He landed on his feet, of course, ready to face the Teddy who had been revealed to be evil just moments before. “I am here to defeat you, Teddymonster!” She shook the action figure and then brought his arms down to his side. “You will release my fellow toys! Or else!” One arm of the action figure went up to point dramatically at the stuffed animal. “They're mine! And I'm not playing your stupid game!” Oscar shouted at her. “These are my toys and I get to decide what games they play!” “They're daycare toys, they're everybody's toys,” Lewis said. “We're all daycare kids. That means we can play with daycare toys.” “And who's mom is the daycare lady? My mom! That means they're my toys and I get to decide how they get played with! And if you don't listen then I'll tell my mom on you!” “Guys, she's coming back!” Danielle peeked down the hallway towards the baby sleeping room where the daycare lady had left to change a diaper. Oscar smiled. “Now put the toy down Dahlia! I decided we're all gonna watch TV. The toys are all going to watch, too.” “But me and Lewis and Danielle wanna play something else! You don't need all the toys to watch a movie with you,” she argued. “Yes I do need them, or else they won't all get to watch it! They're my toys and I want them to watch the show with me!” Danielle rushed away from the door and to the table. “Guys, she's coming! For reals.” The door opened and Oscar's mom stepped in with her pink converse and khaki capri pants, her shoes matched to the color of the breast cancer awareness T-shirt she wore. “Are we all playing nice?” she said. “I heard somebody say you were going to watch a movie? Well I did get a new DVD last night I know Oscar is excited to watch, how about you kids?” “Mom, Dahlia won't give me back my action figure!” Oscar whined. “I need Sergeant Jimothy to watch the movie with me,” he hugged his mother's leg and looked up at her with puppy dog eyes. “Dahlia, play nice now, and give Oscar his toy back,” the daycare lady said. Dahlia handed the action figure over without saying a word. She couldn't wait until she was older, she thought. She couldn't wait until this surely childish rule of unfairness was over, when she would be an adult and everyone else would be mature enough to understand how to share.
