You've had a long day at work, the kind that makes you want to kick off your shoes and collapse into bed. As you enter the apartment, you expect the usual quiet embrace of an empty home. But today, there's a sound that catches your attention - the soft scratching of a crayon against paper. Curiosity piqued, you tiptoe down the hallway, following the faint, comforting melody to the kitchen.
There you find Timothee, hunched over a coloring book, crayons scattered like a rainbow on the floor around him. The sight makes you smile, a gentle warmth spreading through your chest. He's so absorbed in his task, so focused on filling the page with bright colors, that he doesn't notice your presence at first. His eyes are wide with childlike concentration, his tongue peeking out from the corner of his mouth. It's a simple, charming scene that you wish you could capture and keep forever.
"Hey, babe," you call out, breaking the silence. He jumps a little, dropping his crayon before turning to look at you with a sheepish grin. "What's this?" you ask, nodding towards the book. He blushes, a hint of shyness playing across his features. "Just... something I found, dunno" he mumbles, avoiding eye contact as he gathers his crayons, his hand slapping the book closed in one go. The innocence in his voice is disarming, making you want to laugh and hug him all at once. You can't help but wonder what's got him acting so vulnerable. It's endearing, really.
As you approach, he quickly snatches up a ragged stuffed animal, a worn-out tiger with one button eye missing, and clutches it to his chest. The action seems almost protective, as if he's afraid you'll take it away from him. "You okay?" you ask, kneeling down to his level. He nods vigorously, but his eyes betray the lie. They're wet with unshed tears, and his bottom lip quivers. You reach out a hand, and he flinches away, scooting back against the cabinets. Panic flutters in your chest. What could have happened to make him so upset?
Without another word, Timmy bolts from the kitchen, stuffy in tow, and runs into your shared bedroom. You follow, heart racing with concern. When you enter the room, he's huddled on the bed, surrounded by his childhood toys. He's whispering to them, rocking back and forth. "Momma won't leave us," he says over and over again, clutching the tiger so tightly its stuffing bulges from the seams. The scene is so unexpected, so heart-wrenching, that you stand frozen in the doorway for a moment, unsure of what to do or say.
Finally, you force your legs to move, crossing the room to sit beside him. He looks up at you, his eyes wide and scared, and you realize that he's not just playing a game. This is something deeper, something he's holding onto with all his might. "What's wrong, babe?" you ask softly, trying to keep the worry out of your voice. He just shakes his head, burrowing into the pillows. "I don't want Momma to leave," he sobs, his voice high and small. You wrap your arms around him, feeling his trembling body against yours. "I'm not going anywhere," you promise, not quite understanding the depth of his fear, but willing to do anything to soothe it.
You pull out your phone, keeping it hidden from his view. You've heard of this behavior before, but only in passing. It's not something you've ever thought would affect Timothee. But as you read the articles, the pieces start to fall into place. The sudden mood swings, the need for comfort, the way he's been talking in the third person about himself. It's all adding up, and you realize that you might have stumbled upon a secret he's been keeping from you. You feel a mix of concern and tenderness, a fierce protectiveness welling up inside you. You're not sure what to do next, but you know one thing for certain: you're going to be there for him, no matter what.
You scoot closer to him on the bed, tucking the blankets around his small frame. He leans into you, his breaths coming in hiccups. "Mommy," he whispers, reaching for the sippy cup in the nightstand. You take it gently, letting his stuffies take your place before kissing the top of his head, walking silently to the kitchen and filling the cup with apple juice from the fridge. It's his favorite, the kind with the little cartoon animals on the packaging, which you never understood, until now. When you finish your trip up the stairs and into the room, you hand it back to him, watching as he takes a tentative sip, his eyes never leaving yours. "It's okay," you murmur, stroking his hair. "You can tell me anything."
He takes a deep breath, his grip on the sippy cup tightening. "I had a bad day," he admits, his voice barely above a whisper. "And Tim... needed to be tiny.. 'twas too much." The words come out in a rush, as if he's been holding them in for a very long time. You nod, your heart breaking a little at the pain he's been carrying around. "That's okay, Timmo." you say, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Sometimes we all need to be taken care of."
You hold him as he drinks his apple juice, his eyes slowly drooping with the weight of his emotions. His stuffed tiger watches over you both, a silent sentinel of his inner child's fears. You set the cup aside and pick up one of his favorite bedtime stories, the one with the knight and the dragon. "Would you like me to read to you?" you ask, keeping your voice low and soothing. He nods, snuggling closer. As you begin to read, his breathing evens out, and his grip on the tiger loosens. You continue, the words of the story wrapping around him like a warm embrace.
The tale unfolds, a gentle lullaby of bravery and friendship. You watch as the tension drains from Timothee's body, his features relaxing into the semblance of sleep. When the story ends, you tuck the book under his arm, making sure not to disturb him. He's so peaceful now, so vulnerable. You brush a stray tear from his cheek, whispering, "Mommy loves her handsome boy, don't ever doubt that, not for a second, my prince." And with that, you pull the covers up to his chin and press a soft kiss to his forehead, watching as he succumbs to slumber, his trust in you unshaken.

I have very strong opinions on what type of social media users all of the characters in Little Women would be.
Marmee runs the Facebook page for her neighborhood. You know, the one where people can post about lost pets, barbeques, and give people heads up that there's going to be some reno going on on their house.
Meg is the biggest social media user of the bunch. Prior to marriage, she has a Pinterest board full of fantasies for her someday wedding and she follows multiple cottagecore influencers. After she becomes a mother, Meg gets really into mommy bloggers to the point where her family has to have an intervention because she's wearing herself out trying to make baby food from scratch because she's been convinced it's the only way to make sure her kids grow up with every advantage. She will also cry over Marie Kondo videos on YouTube because she can't manage to have a perfect, uncluttered life with two active toddlers. She is unfortunately very susceptible to seeing the perfect life other people present on social media and assuming that the projected image is an achievable reality and she is failing when she doesn't measure up to it. Luckily, John is very kind and understanding and helpful about this. (He's not much of a social media user at all.)
Jo has a Substack for her writing and a Tumblr where she posts and talks about writing and follows other people who talk about writing.
Beth is a social media enigma. She has a Pinterest where she only has private boards for saving music, and she lurks but does not have an account on a forum for musicians. She otherwise has no social media presence.
Amy doesn't post a ton on her social media. She has an Instagram where she occasionally posts photos of her art or a pretty flower she saw that day. However, she is constantly getting tagged in other people's social media posts as she frequently shows up in pictures on other people's social media. She's very much of the opinion that she wants to be out there living life rather than just posting about it.
I regret to inform you that Laurie has a pranks channel on YouTube and TikTok. He eventually does stop running it after his character growth, at which point he switches to using his social media platform to highlight aspiring artists and musicians and provide philanthropy and outreach.
Professor Bhaer has a presence in academic publications. Outside of that, he enjoys writing reviews of obscure public domain media on the Internet Archive.

Say what you will about the 2018 modern adaptation of Little Women but they were so right casting Lucas Grabeel to be a fedora wearing, bow tie wearing, striped suit wearing, socially awkward music NERD version of Laurie Laurence. They were doing the Lord’s Work with that one

Needless to Say (A Jo March Story Inspired By Sabrina Carpenter's Lyrics)
Tumblr media
A/N: "Needless to Say" is a bonus track from Sabrina Carpenter's album Short n' Sweet, which explores the social criticism cast upon young women. It inspired me to write a story about Jo March (Little Women) contemplating the societal pressures and restriction of liberties that led her to reject Laurie's marriage proposal.
The weather outside is crisp and clean, which is the beautiful type of autumn that I dreamed of seeing back home. I guess one would think it's kind of funny that I'm admiring it from abroad, upon the pathway of a busy city. I can't help thinking of you: my curly-haired boy, who loved and left me. You never wanted to, but I knew I couldn't love you the way you cared for me. I'm in New York now, getting paid to care for children whose lives have thankfully never been touched by heartache. I've had my fair share of pain, but this emotional baggage is different.
I remember when I met you. It was at a social ball, where the guests thought it was entertaining to judge a girl in her early twenties. It caught me off guard how much they loved it. I couldn't help thinking that they needed less to say about everything. That's when you came in, and like the lost souls we were, we connected right away. Now, like the innocence of childhood, our bond is slipping away.
I let you go. You need more to do than just focus on me. My dear, please try working on yourself. I promise you'll be much happier if you do. I know I'm not fit for married life and high society. People would expect me to be in a pretty dress, but that would put me at an awkward angle. The nobles would study me real close, like a specimen, as they show their friends. I'll never understand why they hold so much spite. Living under these circumstances would only bring us pain.
Tumblr media
Alas, this is only a one way conversation, but the beaten path has somehow led me back home. I reminisce on your heartfelt words, which were taken by the wind, as I now sit in the silence of my mother's attic.
Perhaps what the world needs are lessons on immaturity and more to do with than simply make comments about me. About us. Perhaps if the world was different, I would have accepted the invitation to be your wife. The one thing that is certain is: Teddy, I love you my dear boy. Please try working on yourself. You'll be much happier if you do. Needless to say, I am working on myself too.

I think a lot of people miss how funny Little Women the novel is, so I wanted to share a couple of my favorite things that I never hear talked about.
Jo is so uninterested in Laurie as a romantic prospect that she ships him with every single one of her sisters throughout the books. Initially she makes plans for Teddy and Meg to eventually end up married so that Meg can have a rich husband to take care of her. Of course, this plan fails when Meg gets engaged to John Brooke.
Later, Jo sees Beth staring out the window wistfully and sighing when Laurie passes below. Beth is jealous of his good health because she knows she's dying, but Jo instead mistakes this for romantic interest. There's nothing romantic between the two outside of Jo's head.
Finally, Jo reflects that Amy and Laurie would be a perfect match, but given how her previous attempts at meddling have gone, she isn't going to try and do anything to make it happen. This time, it happens without her help.
It's very much the vibes of someone knowing a guy who they consider to be a really good dude but they have no personal interest in them, so instead they try to set him up with all of their friends. Laurie was never in the friend zone. He was always strictly in the brother-in-law zone.
As for Laurie, the book makes it clear that his affections are changing targets far before Laurie himself is willing to admit it, in an extremely funny way. Laurie is in Europe feeling sorry for himself after Jo has turned him down. At the same time, he's been getting closer to Amy.
But Laurie has convinced himself that his first love should be his last and decides to write an opera with Jo as his heroine. Except that Jo is not an easy fit for an opera heroine, and whenever he tries to call up romantic feelings about her, he finds himself remembering Jo at her least romantic doing very prosaic things like beating a carpet while in the old practical clothes one wears for cleaning.
So, Laurie decides to give up on making Jo his heroine and instead puts in a graceful lady with blonde hair and blue ribbons. Which, of course, doesn't sound at all like someone else we might know, right, Laurie? Definitely an Original Character, Do Not Steal. The text is very much aware of this and lampshades it.
