CAMILLUS
From Twitter: OKAY IM EXCITED have been wanting to create a proper Legion OC for a long time, and since I'm *specially* inspired today I finally came up with something good, very OC and a potential OC rank in general LOL.....
LORE BELOW!!
In certain areas the Legion military is expecting demographic disaster, with so many reckless loses. Fearful, Caesar discreetly forms a group of his most studious and wise priestesses talented in brainwashing techniques, with the goal of coming up with a protocol that would quickly and efficiently integrate the most unwilling men into the ranks.
Having been granted all the freedom the needed for this project, the priestesses study many medical procedures, drugs, technologies and rituals to totally break the mind of men.
Out of all their test subjects, only one man could come out alive from these trials, a blood-lusting beast potentiated by a concoction of psycho, sacramental herbs and spices, injected directly into the arteries by command with a repurposed bomb collar. The man, absent-minded, meek, and mostly passed out when out of drugs, becomes an uncontrollable animal ready to battle in mere seconds.
After the continuous studying of this specimen, a kind of dyonisian-like cult emerges by the priestesses who witness the power of ritualizing frenzy and ecstasy, not for the sake of wordly pleasure but for mindless, untamed strenght and destruction.
The subject was baptized "Camillus" (Priest Servant) after his identity was competely erased away. He has yet to be released in a battle. Meanwhile, he has become used to the company of the priestesses, enjoying their knowledge and attention.
Whilst the project was a success, it was found to be very scandalous for Caesar, knowing well that the last thing he wants is for the Legion to be tainted by drug-fueled mindess bioological machines that are so antithetical to the ideal Legion soldier who proudly serves with all his will and wit.
More commentary I made on Twitter:
Thinking about how different this man would be from the average legion soldier just bc he was socialized amongst priestesses 😚 he knows the pleasure of womanly company, their wisdom and care, he's probably very delicate in mannerism and soft-spoken. He's a ladies man, a girls guy. He'd be so out of place in any legion camp amongst other men and be very displeased about it. But still he can switch into being the scary beast he was brainwashed and trained to be surpassing all the other men in brutal strength lol ❤️ I love that contrast

The morality of Batman Begins (2005)
Directed by Christopher Nolan, story by David Goyer, they co-wrote the screenplay.
What are the "morals" of this film?
It is wrong to kill the childhood murderer of your parents ("turn the other cheek") or to even derive satisfaction from his murder by a third party, instead you should forgive him and let the legal system (Falcone/mafia-controlled or otherwise) "administer justice"
It is the height of morality to attempt to spare the life of a random Asian murderer ("every soul is sacred"/"human rights") and in the process betray your ultra-masculine European traditionalist surrogate father (a Bin Laden/Nazi/Satan hybrid and the core evil in the text, whose plot entails gassing the city), destroy his monastic order, kill several of his men indirectly and ultimately kill him
It is the height of morality to be a romantically incontinent male, manipulated, browbeaten, slapped and ultimately rejected by an arrogant and abrasive liberal feminist career woman (who is the daughter of a former servant of the Wayne family: the de facto monarchy of Gotham/New York)
The Anglo protagonist Bruce Wayne (traditionally portrayed as a renaissance man genius) is not very intelligent, at least not compared to the retconned magical negro character (Morgan Freeman/God in Bruce Almighty, another surrogate father figure to Batman) who runs his science department, with the African promoted to CEO of Wayne Enterprises at the end of the film (a return to a position on the board which Freeman/Fox had enjoyed under Bruce's liberal father but not under the authority of the cynical caretaker owner Earle, who Bruce fires at the end of the film)
The man with the highest position of legal authority in the city (Loeb) is another retconned African
It was the height of morality for Wayne's "great-great grandfather" to transport African slaves (victims of an "original sin") to the North of the United States and to encourage social integration with them, despite Wayne's moralist liberal parents being killed by a member of the criminal underclass
It is acceptable for Batman to be morally hypocritical regarding his Christian "no killing rule" (guns are apparently especially cowardly and immoral, promoting civilian disarmament by the system), killing via inaction and even via extreme recklessness and then to deny responsibility
It is the height of morality to defend and try to gradually reform a corrupt "liberal" system and to lethally oppose radical measures to defeat evil, with "liberalism" overcoming "traditionalism/fascism" (caricatured as apocalyptic and genocidal) in the end
Wayne Enterprises (Anglo origins, American but global reach, capitalistic/plutocratic, technological/scientific, "diverse" branding, secular and outwardly humanitarian, moralistic, above the law, semi-covertly autocratic and lethal but in denial about it) is a coded metaphor for the Western liberal order/America, as is Batman himself.

Blog 5 - Necropolitics and Becoming the Black of the world
Reading 1: "Introduction. The becoming black of the world.'
Mbembè lays forth his vision of "Becoming Black of the World" in this first chapter. He claims that the fact that Europe is no longer the world's center of gravity is the most critical development of our time. European philosophy tends to view identity more as a relationship between comparable creatures than as a shared worldly belonging. Due to this, Blackness and race have had a variety of essential manifestations in European countries' collective imaginations.
The Euro-American civilization, in particular, has rendered Blackness and race two sides of the same coin by reducing the body and the living person to concerns of appearance, skin, and color and by coloring the status of fiction based on biology. Race has been at the heart of tragedies and countless crimes and murders over the centuries, working as a basic category that is both material and phantasmic.
The history of the dizzying combination of race and blackness has three pivotal periods. The first began with the organized despoliation of the Atlantic slave trade in which African people were made into human objects, commodities, and currency. The second phase coincided with the end of the eighteenth century, when "Negroes", as beings taken by others, started leaving traces in a language of their own while also demanding the position of complete subjects in the living world. Several slave uprisings, Haiti's declaration of independence in 1804, the end of Apartheid, the fight to halt the slave trade, the liberation of Africa, and the battle for civil rights in the United States all served as milestones in this period.
The third period instead, the beginning of the twenty-first century is characterized by the globalization of markets, the privatization of the globe under the auspices of neoliberalism, and the deepening integration of the financial markets, the postimperial military complex, and electronic and digital technologies. When the author refers to "neoliberalism," he refers to the time in human history when Silicon Valley industries and digital technology predominated. Only working nomads, who consider themselves the straightforward result of pure chance, exist in this new world. They are both susceptible to the market and to debt. The man is now simply another animal, without a unique essence to defend or preserve, and he is a slave to want.
The constant dangers that Black slaves faced in the early days of capitalism are now accepted as the norm for all of subaltern humankind. Hence, the propensity to generalize the Black situation is linked to the formation of new imperial behaviors. Early capitalism used the word "Black" to describe just the conditions that were forced on people of African descent, including various types of exploitation, the loss of all autonomy, and—most importantly—the loss of the future and of time, the two matrices of possibility. According to Mbembe, the term "Black" is now used broadly. Becoming the Black of the world is this new fungibility and dispersion, institutionalized as a new standard of life and extended to the entire planet.
Does the downgrading of Europe to a world province herald the end of racism? Or would racism just reappear in the gaps of a new language on "species" when humanity becomes fungible? By framing the query in these words, Mbembe sustains the notion that neither race nor Blackness has ever been conceptually established. According to him, they have always been a part of a line of unending signifiers. There are traces left by the colonial desire to divide, classify, establish hierarchies, and produce differences. Mbembe questions if it is feasible to develop a connection with the Black Man that differs from that of a master and his servant.
Personal Reflection: I thought about how many bad connotations there are with the word black nowadays (the Black plague, Black Friday where everything is worth less, Blackout, Blacklisted, Blackmailed…)
Reading 2: Mbembe, A., & Meintjes, L. (2003). Necropolitics. Public Culture, 15(1).
This essay's thesis is that the ability to decide who gets to live and who has to die is where sovereignty finds its ultimate manifestation. Hence, the essential qualities of sovereignty (to kill or to permit to live) are its bounds. By defining life as the exercise and display of power, sovereignty is defined as having control over mortality. Mbembe makes several references to Foucault's concept of biopower in his study: exercising control and authority over life. He connects this idea to the notion of the state of exception and sovereignty. Giorgio Agamben has proposed that the extralegal use of force constitutes the state of exception, which is an ongoing spatial arrangement that is beyond the usual application of the rule of law.
Reflection: The police in the US can be considered a "state of exception" in the sense that they commit killings outside the rule of law but still legally within the system since they don't face consequences
Mbembe contends that the state of exception and the definition of hostility serve as the normative basis for the right to murder. Under these circumstances, power (which is not necessarily governmental power) frequently utilizes the ideas of exception, emergency, and a made-up adversary to subvert the rule of law. According to Foucault's description, biopower seems to classify humans into those who must live and those who must die. Such a force defines itself in connection to a biological field and operates on the gap between the living and the dead. This control requires the split of the population into subgroups and the creation of a natural cut between the groupings. Racism is the term used by Foucault to describe this phenomenon. Foucault states that the processes of biopower and the sovereign right to murder are ingrained in the operations of all modern nations; in fact, they may be viewed as essential components of state power in modernity.
The most comprehensive illustration of a state using its right to execute people, in Foucault's opinion, was the Nazi state. He asserts that it rendered the control, preservation, and maintenance of life coextensive with the sovereign right to life. From a historical standpoint, some scholars have claimed that colonial imperialism and the multiplication of technological methods for murder created between the Industrial Revolution and the First World War are where the material foundations of Nazi extermination may be discovered. The gas chambers and the ovens, in Enzo Traverso's opinion, marked the end of a protracted process of dehumanizing and industrializing death. Serialized execution was automated and became a completely technical, impersonal, quiet, and quick process. Racist stereotypes and the rise of class-based racism translated the social conflicts of the industrial world into racial terms and led to comparisons between the working classes and "stateless people" of the industrial world and the "savages" of the colonial world, contributing to this development.
youtube
According to Mbembe, the political ideologies of the ancien régime are where the connections between modernity and terror may be found. The introduction of the guillotine in France heralded a new stage in the "democratization" process. In fact, all citizens were then subject to this method of death, which was once reserved for the nobles. Innovations in murderous technologies aim at "civilizing" the techniques of killing, in a culture where decapitation is seen as less humiliating than hanging. They also aim at disposing of a large number of victims in a relatively short space of time. Also, terror is perceived as an almost essential component of politics during the French Revolution, as more lenient kinds of brutality emerge.
Next Mbembe talks about slavery, which is one of the earliest examples of biopolitical experimentation. The basic structure of the plantation system and its aftereffects reveals the paradoxical and illustrative figure of the state of exception in numerous ways. The presence of a slave seems like a perfect shadow since it is like an "object" that another person is possessing. Colonies and borders are equivalent in this sense. There are "savages" living there, intended as not worthless of anything. These conflicts don't involve conventional armies. They do not suggest that citizens who view one another as foes will band together as sovereign subjects. They do not distinguish between "enemy" and "criminal," or again, between fighters and non-combatants.
The siege stage is a different idea Mbembe brings forth. It enables for a method of killing that does not differentiate between enemies on the inside and outside. The sovereign is interested in whole populations. Villages and towns under siege are isolated from the outside world and shut off. No matter the immediate repercussions, adverse effects, or "collateral damage" of military operations, modern wars strive to subdue the opponent.
The combination of the disciplinary, the biopolitical, and the necropolitical in late-modern colonial occupation varies from the early-modern colonial occupation in numerous ways. The modern colonial occupation of Palestine is the most effective example of it. The colonial state is using the authority of its own unique history and identity narrative to support its core claim of sovereignty and legitimacy in this instance. In this instance, both violence and sovereignty lay claim to a divine origin: peoplehood itself is created via the worship of a single deity, and national identification is seen as a defense against the Other, other deities.
Two logics are at odds in the example of Palestine: the logic of martyrdom and the logic of survival. Killing is the lowest form of survival. According to the logic of survival, one's fear of seeing death transforms into the happiness that someone else is deceased since it gives the survivor a sense of security. The concept of the "suicide bomber" is what most exemplifies instead the logic of martyrdom. The body really becomes a weapon rather than just concealing one. A new semiosis of murder appears in this logic. The body's strength comes from an abstraction process driven by the longing for the eternal. In other words, death collapses the future into the present.
An exuberant concept of politics and time is what binds horror, death, and liberation because I have control over and the ability to protect myself from death. Yet that is also the area in which freedom and negation exist. Necropolitics, therefore, is the exercise of social and political power to impose social and political rules on how certain people must live and how others must die.

So if you had to entity (TMA) assign the scp doctors who would get what entity and why?
aaaahhhhh this is such a good question!! and honestly...not that easy to answer. but i'll try!
(massive spoilers for the magnus archives, esp season 3 onwards!)
bright: the Spiral. after all, what else would he have to fear? he is, essentially, an immortal. his sense of identity and sense of self slowly slipping, his view of reality gradually becoming more and more distorted as he distances himself from that which made him human, and the man known as jack bright shatters into a million tiny pieces. not knowing who or what he is anymore, losing what makes him, well, him, is what i feel bright would resonate the most w
kondraki: i'm torn between the Lonely and the Slaughter. the Lonely because of certain tales where he's depicted as so distant and all in all, unable to connect w other people, and ultimately unwilling. the Slaughter because...everything else. i personally lean more towards the Slaughter for him because hehe feral scientist fucking everyone's shit up go brrrrrr (also, anger issues)
clef: hmmmm. the Web, perhaps? clef is one hell of a liar and a manipulator. besides, seeing as the people of the web have a spider motif going for them, and the most popular (canon) picture of clef features him w the head of a spider, i can't help but feel it fits
iceberg: …i'm at a loss. the End? no, maybe not. the Desolation? he does have a thing for explosives and destruction, although i'm not sure if it's like...integral to his character (can you even have an avatar of the Desolation who's cold instead of like, hot/made out of wax?? it surely would be an...interesting concept. since other entities like say, the Buried, do manifest in many different forms)
gears: this one is decidedly the trickiest. how do you go about defining a character based off what their deepest fear/a defining part of theirs is, when one of the character's main schticks is that they, seemingly, feel no fear at all? (or any emotion, for that matter) for that reason alone, the End. people who have been touched by it seem to have that very apathetic/detached feel to them (well, georgie at least), so it would at least explain how absolutely nothing phases him
cimmerian: the Eye. ngl, since i'm not that familiar w the character (never seen the yt vids, tho i probably should) so i can't really say for sure, but he has that Vibe y'know. what w the bill cypher get up and the scars. it's easy for me to picture him spying on all the events going down at the foundation and simply jotting them down on a computer or notebook somewhere-most likely a notebook. technology and the Eye don't seem to get along
rights: ohoho i'm gonna go completely on a limb here and say: the Hunt. it's just very easy for me to picture her as...feral. no real idea why. i'm sure there's a Fear better suited for her but i like this one personally
glass: no disrespect to my boi simon, but he has way less avatar/servant vibes and way more "i gave a terrified statement and went missing two days later" vibe. but if i really had to try and guess: the Eye. after all, his job relies on trying to get information out of people, in a sense, and he probably has...a decent chunk of intel others working at the foundation might not have (even if it's possibly not anything particularly important or noteworthy). also, i ADORE the notion of simon, the most harmless, generally well-meaning of the docs, turning into something horrifying in his own right who you don't want to fuck w. but not in a heel-face turn sort of way; him gradually Knowing things about the others and letting it slip during sessions, and giving the other docs a terrifying moment of whiplash "how the FUCK did you know that???"
gerald: the Desolation. not because he's particularly destructive by nature, he's just so fucking disaster prone he somehow lands himself into a situation where he makes a deal w the entity by accident and oop, will you look at that, all of site-19 just burned down
#long post#tysm for the question anon!! i adored getting to combine my hyperfixations hehe#altho i have thought of a tma/scp crossover for a while#i think i coevered most of them#anywho#malia mumblings#tma#scp#scp foundation#scp hc#the magnus archives#tma spoilers#dr bright#dr glass#dr gears#dr kondraki#dr gerald#dr clef#dr rights#i might put this under a cut lmao

“Soft Yet Strong”
CHAPTER 1, Obi-wan Kenobi x Female Reader
1
Obi-wan Kenobi never thought he’d ever return to Stewjon, let alone be assigned to protect the royal family of the planet he once so long ago would’ve called home. He wasn’t alone in this assignment though. His former padawan, now general to republic forces would accompany him with his own padawan to protect the King and Queen while Obi-wan was to protect the princess.
The three Jedi arrived to the planet and the palace of the royals rather quickly. The grassy farm planet wasn’t a large as Obi-wan remembered it to be. As the ship approached the large stone palace, the Jedi could tell that the planet had yet to integrate many forms of technology into their kingdom. The area around the palace itself held a large city around it, and the outskirts of the city was all villages and farmland. Golden fields of drying wheat and vast orchards that grew who knows what kinds of fruits scattered the vast terrain. Just as Obi-wan had remembered from his memories of visiting his brother as a young padawan.
The ship landed in a designated field filled with various other ships just behind the palace itself. The three Jedi were greeted in kind by who they assumed to be the royal guard. With the Captain of the guard at the head of the group of men making their way towards the ship, Obi-wan, Anakin and Ahsoka made their way off the vessel to meet them halfway.
“General Kenobi I presume?” asked the man at the lead. He wore silver armor which differed much from Kenobi’s white jedi armor and Anakin’s black. And instead of a blaster at his belt, the man carried a simple steel sword. No wonder the Senate requested the Jedi to be sent as protection. This planet had yet to modernize their weaponry and lacked defense against the ongoing threats towards the royal family.
“Indeed I am. This is General Anakin Skywalker, and his padawan Ahsoka Tano. They were assigned to protect the King and Queen from any threats while I am assigned to the princess.” Obi-wan replied holding out his hand to shake.
Reluctantly the Captain took his hand and shook it. Obi-wan could feel the unease and uncertainty radiating off of the man. The two groups stood for a moment in silence before Ahsoka broke the tense feeling in the air.
“Well, I guess we should meet their highnesses then. Care to show us the way?” the young padawan says.
“Good call Snips.” Anakin replies with a nervous laugh.
Obi-wan had thought that the guard would have welcomed the Jedi more than they seem to be now. But the group seemed to follow suit in the Captain’s hostile manor towards them. Maybe he felt threatened by the Jedi? Were they overstepping their bounds in taking up the task of protecting the family instead of the guards protecting them themselves? Obi-wan pushed those thoughts aside.
“I supposed you must meet who you will be protecting.” Scoffed the captain. “Though General Kenobi, I will say that you will not find the princess where we will be going.”
“And why is that Captain?” Obi-wan asks.
“Princess Y/N has a history of slipping off to places she shouldn’t be.” The Captain replied. “If I were you General, I’d start looking in the orchards on the palace grounds or maybe the wheat fields west of the palace. In the meantime, my men and I shall escort General Skywalker and his padawan to the throne room. The king and queen will meet you in due time today Kenobi.”
A princess with a tendency to slip away. Great. Obi-wan Kenobi had faced many difficult challenges, but protecting this princess very well may be the most difficult challenge he will ever face.
As the group of men began to follow the Captain towards the palace, Anakin and Ahsoka began to follow behind. But not without stopping to give Obi-wan a reassuring pat on the shoulder and a smile.
“I’m sure the princess won’t be as much of a challenge as they say Obi-wan. And besides, I hear that the princess is one of the most beautiful in the galaxy.” Anakin.
“More beautiful than Padme, Anakin?” Obi-wan questioned with a knowing smirk.
“Never more beautiful than Padme.” Anakin said as he continued to walk away.
Obi-wan was alone now. Tasked with finding the princess who could be anywhere on the palace grounds. But before he began his search, he couldn’t help but take in the scenery. The trees in gardens, and soft breeze that blew through his reddish blonde hair and the golden wheat fields in the distance. Coruscant was Obi-wan’s home, but he couldn’t help but admit that he truly missed Stewjon. Nothing compared to the natural beauty of this planet. That is until he laid eyes upon the princess he was set on looking for.
He spent what felt like hours searching. He didn’t know where to start and he didn’t even know what the princess actually looked like. But lucky for him, servant working in the orchards had pointed him towards the wheat field. The exact one to the west in which the Captain had mentioned to check.
The walk was long, but he paid it no mind. Obi-wan didn’t often get time like this to enjoy the nature that surrounded him. Being a Jedi General amidst the ongoing war gave him little time to enjoy the simple things in life.
After walking along the path on the edge of the the golden field for a good distance, Obi-wan finally came upon a lone apple tree at the end of his trail. And under that tree laid the most beautiful girl, or should he say woman he had ever seen. There was no doubt in his mind that this was the princess of Stewjon.
Obi-wan approached quietly, not wanting to startle the sleeping woman. She was beautiful as she laid there, under the tree in her elegant cream-colored gown. Her long H/C hair was strewn out in a halo around her face. And an old leather-bound book laid beside her. The whole scene before him put a soft smile on his face. That is until she began to stir.
With her eyes still closed, the princess shifted the position she lay. Obi-wan was afraid he had woken her up.
“So, you must be General Obi-wan Kenobi. Are you here to collect me and bring me back to the palace?”

So guess who decided to make the first chapter to a Daminette Konosuba AU. I’m using the world and rules of it more so than the characters, but this would definitely be more comedic than my other two fan fictions. If I get good feedback, I might continue it. This is just the world set up.
Damian stirred a bit and struggled to open his eyes. The light coming from below him made him flinch as he struggled to adjust to the brightness. “Oh good, you’re coming to.”
“Huh?” His vision began to focus a bit more and he noticed he was in a dark space with no one around but a lone woman. She sat in a throne and folded her hands over her lap. She smiled kindly at him, but her eyes were filled with pity. “What?”
“Do you know who you are?”
He thought for a moment and nodded, “My name is Damian Wayne.”
“Anything else?” He thought a bit more before she asked, “Do you remember how you died?”
“I died?” Suddenly memories came flooding back to him. He was with his family. They were on a mission. Something went wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong. He noted how he was still wearing his uniform but was surprised it was undamaged. He placed a hand over his abdomen and shuttered, “I don’t think my body was intact.”
“No, but you died quickly. It was merciful and for that I am thankful.” She placed her hand over her heart and sighed, “You left your world too soon. You have transformed so much. You’ve grown to be such a fine young man.” She frowned, “I’m so sorry for you and your family’s loss. They are still fighting, but they mourn.”
Damian tensed, “Wait! My family! They need me! I need to go back!”
“I cannot do that.” She held out her hand, “Damian, I am the goddess of creation. My name is Tikki. I am here to assist you in your passing.”
“My passing?”
“Yes.”
“I’m not ready to go yet!”
“I may reincarnate you, but you would not remember your past life. You will start anew.”
“I can’t do that either! I have to get back to them right now!”
She bit her lip, “There is one way, but I do not recommend it.”
“Tell me.”
She waved her hand and a book appeared before it floated down in front of her. The book opened and pages started flying out of the bindings. The pages flew around the two before lining up in front of him. “In another world, one very different from yours, we have had a problem with who we call Hawkmoth. The people of the world call him a demon who controls people through their emotions, but we gods and goddesses know the truth.” He noted how her fists clenched as she spoke of him, “The Demon King was like you, but bitter. The Demon King stole the powers of one of our own and now we can no longer stop him. We haven’t even been able to watch over him. Our information on the Demon King has been significantly restricted.”
“How restricted?”
“Our line of information and communication to Nooroo was severed 18 years ago.”
Damian grimaced, “What can I do?”
She bit her lip before proceeding, “Us deities have decided we would grant any wish to the hero who brings this man down. This is your only chance at resurrecting at the exact place and time when you died.”
“I’ll take it.”
“Damian-”
“I’ll take it. I’ve faced aliens, magic, and literal demons from hell. With my history, I can do it. I can’t leave my family.”
Tikki nodded and pointed at the pages between them, “You may take one thing with you to this new world. Along with this, you will continue to have your memories and will gain knowledge of the language to help you integrate better.”
He looked at the pages and noted how odd each of the items were, “What kind of world is this?”
“In your world, the best comparison is what your people call ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ or ‘RPGs’. This world is older, magic and monsters run amok, nobles and monarchy are the norm leadership, and leveling is the only way to power up in your classes.” She chuckled, “It may be an exciting world for you to learn new skills and magic you never would’ve in your world.”
“Magic? Monsters? Sounds like a bad videogame, but something I can work with.” He turned his attention back to the pages in front of him. He examined each one; a sword, a staff, a suit of special armor, and much more. Still, despite all the perks and charms, nothing seemed quite right. “I can’t use any of these.”
“Hm?”
“I can’t use any of these.” He pushed the pages away to look her in the eye, “If I’m going to take on someone using a deity’s power, I’m going to need a deity’s power too.” Damian sighed, “I need your power.”
Tikki smiled and hummed, “You were always a smart one. Always one to look at all the right angles.” She sighed and looked at her lap, “I cannot give you too much for obvious reasons but what I can give you is a tool made by my power.” She held out her hand and a glowing orb appeared in her palm. She placed her other hand over it and squeezed hard before opening her hands. She blew onto the orb and Damian watched as the orb faded away until what was left was a pair of earrings. “If you use this, you will be able to transform and use some of my power. However, if you find one of my direct decedents, they will be able to tap into my true powers and you will never fail.”
She hummed a sweet tune and the ground below him started glowing, “Damian Wayne, you will awaken in the town of crossroads where you will be guided by a fairy of my own essence. Keep her safe and she will guide you both to glory and to reliable party members. I will speak to the others. More tools of our own creation will fall before you as you continue your quest.”
He nodded and noticed how the floor below him began glowing. A wall of light circled him and he began levitating, “Tikki?”
“With the blessing directly from the goddess of creation, I send you off. Please, Damian, do not die.”
He nodded, “I’ll do my best. Watch over my family.”
“Of course.” The light became blinding and he felt his body fade away as he reincarnated. The last thing he heard was a simple “good luck” before he woke up on a bench. He looked around and Tikki was right, this really was a Dungeons and Dragons type of world. Horse-drawn carriages passed him by along with men and women all in medieval-looking armor and clothing. No real technology, but the world’s civilization seemed advanced enough for him to grasp the probable concepts and rules. He noticed how some people began crowding around him and whispering. He looked down and realized his clothing was probably making him stand out, “Right. Now, where do I go?”
He felt a tap on his side and opened up his cape slightly. A large red and black fairy hid behind the clothing but smiled. He was comforted by the company and began walking. “Okay. Where do I go fairy?”
He felt the creature travel up to his hoodie and it whispered in his ear, “You can call me Tikki. I am part of her after all.” He nodded and she peeked at the town around her, “Okay, you will want to go to the adventure’s guild. Receive your class and skillset and register yourself as an adventurer.”
“Should I hide my identity?”
She shook her head, “You do not need to hide your identity here. This is a new world and your real name will be on the registration card. Besides, with your standing and background, you may pass as some kind of noble. You could use that to your advantage as you work your way through this world and gain skill points.”
“Skill points? Are you serious?”
“Yes, it is the only way for us to gain enough strength and resources later.” He rolled his eyes and followed her directions while taking in the sights. The place came out of a storybook and it seemed the currency resembled gold. He’d need to ask Tikki how to get money. He felt someone staring at him and looked around before noticing a girl staring at him outside of a bakery. Once they locked eyes she visibly tensed. “I sense someone of great importance.”
“Huh? Where?”
“I don’t know.”
He scanned the area some more, but his sights kept locking back onto the girl staring at him. He could tell his fuse was getting short and it was obvious she wasn’t going to stop any time soon. He grumbled and finally stomped over. She flinched and stepped back while turning her attention anywhere else. “Hey! What do you want from me?”
“Eh? I wasn’t- I mean, I didn’t- I mean, what are you talking about?” She laughed nervously and rubbed the back of her neck, but he clearly wasn’t buying it. When she realized that wasn’t going to work she started apologizing profusely, “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I don’t usually stare at strangers! I’m sorry!”
He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, “What do you want?”
“It’s just-”
“Spit it out!”
“I’ve never seen anyone with your clothes before and I’m a designer and-”
He snapped at her, “Then take a picture!”
She blinked, “A what?”
He flinched. A camera may not even be a concept in this world yet, “Ah, um, right. Never mind.”
She nodded and smiled, “May I draw it at least?”
Tikki tugged at his hoodie and he shook his head, “I need to register as an adventurer right away.”
She perked up, “Wait!” She stepped forward and leaned in, “You’re going to the adventure’s guild?” He stepped back but she continued to be persistent, “Can I come?”
“Now why would a little girl like you want to go?”
She puffed up her cheeks, “Hey! I bet we’re not even that far apart in age from each other! Just because I wear pigtails doesn’t mean I’m little!”
“I didn’t say anything about your pigtails.”
She blushed and pulled at them slightly, “Sorry. Everyone mentions them so it’s a habit.” She shook her head, “But, please! I want to look at the armor of the new adventurers! My lady-”
“MARINETTE!” The girl in front of him flinched. The two turned to see a blond girl strutting towards them. She was pulling another blonde behind her with a trail of servants. The girl next to him, presumably Marinette, hid behind him.
Her voice wavered, “Oh, hello Lady Bourgeois. Mister Agreste.”
The boy being pulled around laughed, “Sorry Marinette. I tried to hold her back.”
Lady Bourgeois stopped in front of him and seemed to size him up, “And who are you? Where are you from?”
If this was a noblewoman, to get anywhere with her he needed her to see him as an equal. Tikki continued to vibrate meaning the person of interest was extremely close. Right now, he needed to level with this girl. “I am the only blood son of the Wayne enterprises in a land called Gotham. I set out on my own to help my family. My name is Damian Wayne.” He bowed and silently thanked his father and mother for teaching him to speak as a nobleman. Business meetings and galas were incredible practice for this. The man seemed to buy it, but the lady seemed skeptical.
“I have never heard of Gotham.”
“Chloe, please. He seems genuine.”
“Adrikins-”
“Please don’t call me that.”
“I’m looking for the adventure’s guild. If you could, I would be grateful for any help.” He hated the helpless act but if these people were noble then they had money. He needed money.
“Gross, why go to a building filled with a bunch of sweaty filthy warriors?” She sighed, “But alright. Fine. Marinette!”
Marinette stood as stiff as a board, “Y-Yes?”
“You’ll be his guide.” Chloe snapped her fingers and a servant ran up to her with a small pouch in his hands. She pointed at him and the man presented the pouch with a bow, “As an offering between one noble to another. I hope to see you soon and out of those awful clothes. Honestly, my goddess would smite you down if you showed up at her temple like that.”
“I don’t know. I like them.” Adrien grinned and sent him a thumbs up, “Don’t you think, Marinette?”
As soon as he addressed her she jumped, “Y-Yeah! His awesome are clothes! I mean, his are awesome clothes! I mean-”
Damian closed his eyes and sighed, “Let’s go, Marinette.” She nodded and looked at him with complete gratitude. She mouthed a silent “thank you” and he nodded. This was easier for both of them. “Once I’ve registered I’ll find you. I’d be honored to learn more about this land from you all.”
Chloe seemed pleased by his manners and he turned away with a simple wave. Adrien sent him as salute and wink before turning back. Once they were fully departed, he relaxed a bit and sighed. “Marinette was it?”
She nodded, “Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”
“If you come with me to register and answer my questions I’ll let you measure, write, and draw every little detail of my uniform. Got it?”
She looked stunned at first, before grinning and nodding furiously. “Yes!”
“Then let’s go. I need to do this quickly.”
“Right!” Something told him this journey was going to be a long one.

Themes in Cyberpunk Generally and Shadowrun Specifically
What is Shadowrun about? Aside from elves with mohawks and machine guns, I mean. That much is obvious. In all seriousness, though – what should we expect from a Shadowrun game? How is the Sixth World different from other “cyberpunk” settings? What does this particular game do well, maybe even better, than other games of a similar stripe? We can answer these questions by taking a dive in the roots of cyberpunk as a genre of science fiction, but even that journey must start with the very foundations of the modern mindset, because cyberpunk as a literary movement has a real problem with modernity. The central moral concepts of the Enlightenment are autonomy and authenticity. The arguments for liberal, democratic government, capitalism, and the Scientific Revolution alike are rooted in an assumption of the importance of liberating the individual. “Liberty” is the moral center of the modern paradigm, and all the other appurtenances of modern life mentioned above are to be interpreted as mechanisms of that liberation. As imaginative fiction reflects the tenor of the times, the through-line of early 20thcentury science fiction is a utopianism based in the modern ideal, with emphasis on the liberating power of science.
But postmodernist critics soon began to question the validity of this vision. The Holy Trinity of liberal society, free markets, and scientific progress began to seem, in their analysis, less likely to free the individual than to enslave them. They posited that under capitalism, science would always be a tool for subverting democracy, and genuine freedom required taking a skeptical stance toward all three. Likewise, the cyberpunk movement in science fiction was born of these post-modern fears, envisioning a future where high-tech has ensnared the individual in a web of consumerism, drugs, virtual reality, and technological serfdom. Indeed, in the idiom of speculative fiction, cyberpunk literature could pose questions about even the moral center of the modern world, as exemplified in Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – in a world where the barrier between man and machine has eroded to the point of invisibility, what is autonomy? What is authenticity?
Cyberpunk literature, like all science fiction, leaned heavily on the science aspect – hence the “cyber” – but it was skeptical, rather than laudatory, of technological progress. The “punk” aspect encompassed the postmodern rebellion against existing structures of power – capital and government – which are posited in punk philosophy not only as hopelessly intertwined but fundamentally flawed, inevitably enslaving those they propose to serve. Punk is inherently anarchist, seeking to tear down the mechanisms of domination; cyberpunk takes special interest in the high-tech aspect of these structures. But just as punk has a difficult relationship with capitalism, constantly courted and tempted by the urge to commodify and merchandise the punk aesthetic in the name of wider exposure and increased social capital (all in the name of the movement, of course), cyberpunk replicates this relationship with technology – the interface of man and machine chips away at our essential humanity, threatening to turn us into objects that can be programmed and directed rather than free and authentic individuals, but the technological marvels of the setting are indispensable in fighting the very structures that produce and control them. The tools of the oppressors can be used against them but likewise constantly threaten to co-opt those who oppose them. And most disturbingly, of course, even the anarchist subculture of resistance in cyberpunk literature is presented as violent and nihilistic, raising questions about what the world will look even if the “punks” win – is there any hope at all?
Cyberpunk can quickly drift into transhumanism, usually when the technology of the setting is fetishized rather than approached skeptically, but also when the central characters are unproblematically portrayed as agents of the structures of power rather than subversive elements in society. But pure punk characters are rare as focal points – it’s more interesting and certainly more in-genre to focus on those who were in some way caught up in the structures of power and then cast aside by them, damaged and discarded. Gibson’s Neuromancer provides excellent examples in Case, Molly Millions, and Riviera, brutalized by the powers-that-be but still used them as disposable commodities to advance the interests of the wealthy and connected. Case is a pitiable figure, arguably the most abused by the agents of power but also, in the end, least willing to reject their blandishments. Indeed, the titular AI is perhaps the only truly free character in the story, exerting its autonomous will on the world, and reaching even beyond.
The original cyberpunk roleplaying game, called quite simply Cyberpunk, followed the style of that era of games in providing little guidance to new players in how to create characters while assuming a knowledge of the relevant genre – the fact that players could take the role of Corps and Cops was not a mistake, as it was likely assumed that these characters would, ultimately, embody the ambiguous relationships to power of their literary counterparts, rather than being uncritical servants of the authorities. The game fittingly portrayed corporations as sinister and government as largely ineffective, but the most telling design feature was the inclusion of rules for “cyberpsychosis,” a gradual disintegration of mental faculties brought on by excessive use of cyber-enhancements. This mechanic “game-i-fied” the postmodern skepticism about the liberatory power of technology and fears about loss of autonomy when the human – the free and authentic person – becomes continuous with the thing, the servile commodities produced by those structures of power.
Other “cyberpunk” games followed, missing the point to greater and lesser degree, until Shadowrun, which wedded fantasy elements to the setting. The inclusion of elves, dwarves, and other magical things might seem to dilute the point of cyberpunk as a genre, but the history of the setting makes the additions apt. Because of the precise way in which Shadowrun integrated fantasy with science fiction, the core conceits of the cyberpunk genre may well have found one of their best expressions to date.
The return of magic in the Sixth World, as the setting is called, provided occasion for the Native American people of North America to rise up, using their traditional spiritual practices – now terrifyingly efficacious – to destroy the United States. As acts of resistance by oppressed outsiders goes, this one is impressive, an apotheosis of the “punk” element of cyberpunk. And the resistance is non-technological, but rather magical – a non-technological resistance only being possible in a setting like Shadowrun’s, despite other works like Neuromancer playing with the idea of “urban primitivism” before this. The triumph of the Native American Nations in the Sixth World is a triumph over all three elements of Enlightenment culture – science, capitalism, and liberal democracy – given the self-proclaimed role of the United States as their standard-bearer in the modern world. True, this decisive defeat does not recapitulate the angst brought over into cyberpunk literature from the noir genre, but the triumph of the indigenous peoples is not the end of the story.
In the Shadowrun setting, major cyberpunk tropes are preserved – the government is corrupt where it is not ineffective, and true power mostly lays with the corporations. “Mostly” is an important caveat there, however – other power blocs exist, such as dragons, the Native American Nations, and the nations of the elves, quite aside from such mysterious antagonists as insect shamans and other foul creatures. Again, this might seem to dilute the essential conflicts of the cyberpunk genre, but Shadowrun envisions those conflicts in a different way, the clue to which is found in the dissolution of the United States in the setting’s backstory. Rather than pitting inchoate punk anarchism against rampant capitalism, rather than pitting urban primitivism and the struggle for authenticity against the insidious creep of technology, it quite literally pits the pre-modern against the modern – mysticism and tradition against the values of the Enlightenment. The outcome of the struggle is no longer pre-ordained, so the sense of futility of classic cyberpunk is lost, but a different sense of doom has taken its place: between the modern and the archaic, there may be no good choice.
Classic cyberpunk is skeptical toward the machinery of democracy and other modern accoutrement, but presents no alternative except anarchy (in this, one might imagine that blighted dystopias like Mad Max are a sort of cyberpunk, but that’s another essay). Shadowrun presents a different choice – rolling back the clock on the Enlightenment is now perhaps a realistic possibility, but one that carries dangers of its own. And it is a choice that must be made. Corporate rapaciousness threatens the natural spaces that embody the magical Essence of the Earth, just as cyber-enhancements threaten the individual character’s Essence, with the end result of too much reliance on cyberware being, in this game, death rather than psychosis. But magical threats abound, as well, such as the insect shamans of the first major myth arc in the game, and this aside from what else might be lost in the unraveling of the modern order – ideas of democracy and equality and so on. Shadowrun pointedly presents the corporate order as practically a feudal one, with employees treated more like serfs, indentured to their lords, while the reflexive Japanophilia of the cyberpunk canon is here leveraged to a different purpose – as an alternative social model based on ancient ways, another refutation of the Enlightenment. Such pre-modern subcultures abound in the setting, but they are pre-modern, which is to say authoritarian, sexist, racist, culturally chauvanistic, and so on. Classical cyberpunk fiction critiques the modern order and offers petty acts of resistance to it; Shadowrun fragments and partially overturns it, but with the caveat that what stands to replace it probably isn’t any better.
Shadowrun, therefore, while an offshoot of the traditional cyberpunk concept, is undoubtedly faithful to the core element of the genre, the critique of the modern. It dissolves the tension of fruitless struggle against it, but replaces it with a diabolical choice. Mind you, as with cyberpunk literature, this can easily fall into transhumanism; the setting-specific counterpart misstep is the glorification of the oppositional pre-modern traditions that now hold a place of honor in the world. The true cyberpunk essence of Shadowrun is best expressed in emphasizing both the intrusive, dehumanizing elements of technocracy as well as the de-individuating aspects of traditional culture paired with the cosmic horror of the magical world.

Pop Culture Builds 8: Mega Man
In the Year 20XX, the world was undergoing a technological revolution. Advanced A.I. and robotics had given rise to all manner of mechanical helpers for industrial and domestic use.
At the forefront of this development were Dr. Thomas Light and Dr. Albert Wily. However, envy and resentment grew in Dr. Wily’s heart at his colleague’s forefront fame as well as opposition to some of his innovations. This came to a head when Wily finally snapped and went rogue, reprogramming several “Robot Masters” and attempting to take over the world with an army of machines, presumably to demonstrate the superiority of his designs.
Feeling the call of justice, Dr. Light’s robotic assistant Rock asked to be rebuilt as a machine of war, capable of infiltrating and destroying the various robotic generals in Wily’s forces, which he has done time after time after time. Thus, Mega Man was born.
Despite his current chassis, Mega Man remains a being of compassion, fighting for others rather than himself, and never backs down from a threat to human and android-kind. His franchise has gotten so big at this point that it’s spawned far future series and even an alternate timeline where he is a program in a Tron-like super-internet and later an energy being, but today we’ll be focusing on the original classic Mega Man.
This will be another Starfinder build, given the sci-fi universe that Megaman comes from.
As a robotic being, we’ll be going through this build on the assumption that Rock is an android, though one could also make the argument for an SRO or Amrantah. Regardless, Mega Man would be a medium character, for while he is on the rather short side at just over 4 feet tall, this puts him at around dwarven height range.
Picking a class for Mega Man was hard, as there is no one specific build that screams “variable weapon system”. However, I believe I have narrowed it down. For this build, we’ll be going technomancer with the cache augmentation alternate class feature, specifically with an arm augmentation which we’ll eventually level up to a Mk 2 weaponized prosthesis. The idea here is that with the combination of the prosthesis and the armor we’ll discuss later, not to mention his spells, this technomancer will be having an arm cannon plus having an array of weapons taken from foes, with spells standing in for other “acquired” abilities. I also recommend the cyberborn theme for a little technical mastery over your own internals and ease of augmentation.
For magical hacks, Mega Man would favor damage-boosting ones as well as those the let them exclude allies from their weapon and spell attacks. Additionally, Charging Jolt, Energy Alteration, Drone Summoner, Translocational Recall, and the like are also good choices.
Mega Man will use his spell list in part to supplement his arsenal of weapons with spells based on the abilities of past foes, or elemental attacks in general. Additionally, the augment weapon spell, as well as other buffing spells for weapons makes a good stand-in for the power gear side of the dual gear system, while haste does the same for the speed side. Summoning spells focused on robots and junkbot spells make a good stand-in for rush and other robotic buddies he has had throughout the series, while higher-level polymorph spells focused on construct forms might be good for emulating those times when he was able to combine with Rush in Adaptor Mode.
Feats turn out to be one of the more integral parts of this build, specifically proficiencies, as you’ll want longarm, heavy weapon, and power armor proficiency at the very least. Advanced melee proficiency is optional, but possible. Beyond that, Agile Casting, Combat Casting, Deadly Aim, Focused Spellcaster, Nanite Integration, Nimble Moves, Skill Focus (Atheletics or Acrobatics) and the like.
The equipment is where this build really comes together. After gaining powered armor proficiency, your technomancer is going to want to get powered armor as soon as possible, which you will periodically replace or upgrade, and attach various weapons taken from foes to the weapon slots. (Flavoring it so that all weapons fire out of the same arm cannon, naturally). While your cache augmentation gives you the option for an arm cannon of your own, this eventually fades in favor of getting a proper mega buster in the form of a plasma fork weapon. Other weapons should be taken with variety and significant battles in mind. Augmentations and armor upgrades should include defensive protections and agility enhancers, pretty much anything that makes you into a more agile platforming character.
This build was the closest I could think to get Mega Man right with the currently available options, but there is something to be said about other builds, such as going Mechanic with either the experimental armor or weapon (or perhaps drone, if you wanted to emphasize the connection with Rush). Soldier is also a good choice if you want less special powers and more mastering your equipment. You might also experiment with the augmented archetype, or perhaps one of the steward archetypes. Additionally, the law officer theme might appeal to you given his role as a servant of justice, or perhaps you could go themeless representing Rock’s previous life as a civil assistant.
This build need not be Mega Man of course, but could also be someone who has made themselves a walking arsenal of weaponry and spells, becoming a mobile and highly-armored warrior.
