It's a shame because it's not like there isn't a place for those interests, they're just trying to express them in the wrong one.

Really, there's nothing inherently wrong with taking an interest in the history and details of military clothing, weaponry, combat technology and machinery, or tactics. All of those are very cool in their own way, if potentially rather morbid, and have value. In the right context, I'm sure it would be very interesting to listen to these guys go on about these topics that they're genuinely interested in, or at least pleasant to see them get excited if the subject matter isn't your thing.

The problem is that they themselves have the context wrong. They're trying to insert those topics into discussions of history, when they really belong in different categories. Costuming, engineering, strategy, these are entirely different fields. Fields that these guys could probably get into in a big way if they recognized that what they're really interested in is distinct from what most people mean when they say they're into history. But because they don't recognize it, (or perhaps do, but are unwilling to pursue further because costuming is for girls or engineering sounds hard or whatever) they end up trying to shoehorn their interests into discussions where they don't belong, and worse, may not even pursue those interests beyond a surface level, meaning not only do they disrupt perfectly good conversations, they do so with trivia instead of a topic they actually know well, and then act like this constitutes being an expert in not only the field of said trivia, but also history in general.

It's annoying for people who want to talk about the politics and art and people of history, and it's frustrating for everyone because the stuff these guys are into does have a place, but that place is not where they think it is. Like yes, please do tell me all about the kinds of bombers the british used. But also please listen to me when I tell you about the Athenian Senate, or the Enlightenment, or Impressionism. And please, please understand that we are talking about very different topics and your interests are not universal.
