4. Shoma’s first senior season 2015 - 2016
Part 3: GP series: Skate America 2015 and TEB 2015
Shoma’s first ever senior Grand Prix was Skate America 2015 in Milwaukee, USA
Shoma placed 4th in the SP because of a fall on his 4T, but won the free skate and placed 2nd overall behind Max Aaron, winning his first senior GP medal!
Short program:
Free skate:
youtube
Do you feel that a breakthrough has opened up heading into Trophee Eric Bompard, the Grand Prix Final, and the All-Japan Championships? Shoma: No, not really. I somehow came in second place here, and I have a chance of making it into the Final; however, I’m still lacking in the ability to definitively get silver or higher at my next competition. Making it to the Final requires a little bit of luck. - Quadruple 2016 (translation by @shoma-uno)
Shoma’s second GP was Trophee Eric Bonpard 2015 in Bordeaux, France
Shoma won the short program with a clean performance scoring 89,56!
youtube
„During the press conference following the men’s short program, Shoma Uno unfolded a sheet of paper in front of him and started reading aloud when he was asked to comment on his performance: “Hello everybody, I’ll speak in Japanese only.” The room, of course, erupted in laughter. He folded his paper back up and answered all questions via his agent, who acted as his interpreter.“ (Icenetwork about the press con)
Due to the event being canceled because of the terror attack happening in Paris, Shoma was prompted the winner! That meant he won his first senior GP and made the GPF 2015!

I really enjoy the way you write about VM. Please don't stop. At least not for a while yet! As a newish fan, can you tell me more about VM friendship with Max/Tati and Carolina and how it came to be? Are they close-ish amongst fellow skaters? I suppose skaters might tend to socialize with skaters doing other types of skating rather than with direct competitors but I am not sure how often their paths would cross other than shows? Unless you train at the same place.
I remember a few years back, and interview bit that related to VM and Patrick. IIRC, it was Tessa, talking about how it was nice to get to know Patrick better, as they were touring together, because it was really the only time they got to hang out together outside of ‘work’. At competitions, skaters are mostly too busy with their own skating to hang out, except for the gala practice and banquet (and probably partying after the comps have finished, LOL). Someone like Patrick would have also had some extra time because of Skate Canada events or sponsorship events.
For Max/Tati or Carolina, it would have been even fewer chances to hang out, though elite skating is a small world and most skaters of similar ages would have known each other since they were young. Obviously, as they began having the opportunities to tour more, their acquaintanceship would have grown, and into something very fond, I think. But how close everyone really is? Hard to say... I think that they probably enjoy each other’s company, when in each other’s company, but probably don’t make a point to socialize in person otherwise (social media is another aspect).
Start things off with a trilogy of Max and Scott, 2004-2019.
#edited because I forgot to add Max's post when I first edited this post LOL#after the link#just a quick one of Patrick with VM from circa 2004#but they've been in comps together since before then#then 2007 with Carolina#2011 TEB#2012 Worlds gala practice and gala#2013 gala practice#Artistry on Ice 2014#Art on Ice 2015 but off the ice#Ice Legends 2016#with the whole crew in one shot!#Worlds 2017 gala practice and gala#and then they've all seen each other since too

Hello! Since you’ve been following VM for a longer time, do you have any suggestions or playlists of their performances? I would love to see their evolution from young kids to successful olympians. Also, it would be nice if they did a documentary about them.
Hello! I also would love to see a documentary about their whole journey. That being said the CBC Roxanne documetary did a good job at capturing their prep for the 2017/18 season. There is also the tv show, but you have to take that whole thing with a grain of salt, a critical eye and a sense of humour.
As for recommendations, there are some links below the cut and for the 2014 onwards ones if you google it you'll find the best one available in your region. Depending on how much time you have, watching all these videos can easily kill a whole day. I would recommend watching at least one of each program and if you want a masterclass in pattern dances watch their CDs. If that's too much then here are my recommendations for hitting the best points of their competitive carrer with bolds being the ones you absolutely can't miss because the list was still very long:
1998 First competition | 2004 Canadians FD | 2005 Nationals FD | 2005 Junior Worlds Ex or 2006 Nationals Ex | 2006 Junior Worlds FD | 2007 Worlds OD | 2007 Worlds FD | 2008 Nationals FD | 2008 Worlds FD | 2009 Worlds FD | 2009 TEB Ex | 2010 Olympics CD | 2010 Olympics OD | 2010 Olympics FD | 2010 Olympics Ex | 2010 Worlds CD | 2011 Worlds SD | 2011 Worlds FD | 2012 Worlds SD | 2012 Worlds FD | 2012 Skate Canada FD | 2013 4CC SD | 2013 Worlds FD | 2014 GPF FD | 2014 Olympics SD | 2014 Olympics FD | 2014 Olympics Ex | 2016 Skate Canada RD | 2016 NHK FD | 2016 GPF RD | 2016 GPF FD | 2017 Nationals RD | 2017 Nationals FD | 2017 4CC FD | 2017 Worlds RD | 2017 Worlds FD | 2017 Skate Canada RD | 2017 GPF FD | 2018 Nationals RD | 2018 Nationals FD | 2018 Olympics RD | 2018 Olympics Team FD | 2018 Olympics RD | 2018 Olympics FD | 2018 Olympics Ex
Thankfully, the lovely @ohyeahvirtuemoirgifs made this amazing masterpost of all of Tessa and Scott's programs from 2003-2014. I did a quick check and all the links I tested still work! The quality for some of the older ones the quality is not great but the CBC recently uploaded their 2007 Worlds FD and 2008 Worlds FD in higher quality.
To add some content from pre-2003 that is not on that masterpost:
1998 - Their first competition ever
2000 - Ilderton skating show
2001 - Ilderton skating show (Grease (both), Tessa, Scott, Bows) and Pre-Novice National Championships
2002ish - Demonstrating a Pattern
2003 - JGP Slovakia OD, FD
If you want to watch through the evolution of Moulin Rouge I also found this post I made with links to all it's outings:
Post-2014 in the professional circuit they did so many shows and there are so many videos I can't link them all there but if you want to search them here are the program names (and the show if they're specific to a certain tour):
2014 - Top Hat and Tails, Into the Mystic, Try (Stars on Ice Canada)
2015 - How Will I Know, Good Kisser, Hip Hip Chin Chin (Stars on Ice Canada)
2016 - What's Love Got To Do With It, Sorry
2017 - Purple Rain
2018 - Long Time Running, Moulin Rouge, Shape of You (Stars on Ice Canada), Fields of Gold (Stars on Ice Canada), You Rock My World
There is also the 2018 Thank You Canada Tour and the 2019 Rock The RInk Tour which they produced and are worth watching in full!

The point gap between Worlds 2014 and Worlds 2015 was laughable LOL. Because honestly it was still kinda reasonable until GPF 2014. Still a 20+ point push but it makes sense: new #1 French Team, new packaging, new coaches, etc. I wonder if them being the Euro champions going into Worlds played a part, because they came 3rd in GPF 2014 to Weapo and C/B who are North Americans. It's like suddenly there's an European team to back politically and the powers didn't hesitate. Still, +40 is hilarious.
I mean just take a look at their trajectory in 2013/14 and then in 2014/14:
As you said, up until GPF their score increase seemed like something that can make sense under some circumstances (in the SD more than the FD) but if you look closer it really wasn’t. At Cup Of China, they got higher PCS than both the Shibs and C/L in the FD. Then TEB came along and their PCS increased by 2 points in both the FD and SD and you could see that the GOEs were starting to increase. Still, at GPF they were 5th in PCS in the SD and 2nd in PCS in the FD. And then Euros came and it only escalated from there...

VM get to know me!
since i finally made a blog after years of lurking, here goes!
What does your @ mean?
it’s a play on virtuemoir i know mahler =/= moir but just let me be okay? i thought it was genius at the time but now i know it was just 3 am and i was exhausted and wasn’t thinking clearly.
Any nicknames you go by?
you can call me keesh!
Favorite VM program?
i’ll do one for each segment of ice dance since choosing just one should be illegal:
short dance: either prince or dream a little dream of me!
compulsories: argentine tango, golden waltz, finnstep, tango romantica
original dance: farrucas (sentimental faves: tears on my pillow, call me irresponsible)
free dance: mahler. if you asked me to choose my favourite ice dance program ever, this would be it.
Least favorite VM program?
dark eyes probably! i watched it once and never again.
(edit: i went back to watch it, because i was feeling some old school v/m. it isn’t as bad as my mind made it out to be, and it makes me wonder if maybe i should go back and rewatch everything and see if any of their programs grew on me, i know seasons did.)
Which VM program has made you cry the most?
mahler (i think you get the idea by now), and i think umbrellas gets me in the feels too. moulin rouge makes me cry tears of pride because i can’t believe everything they had to go through to get to that point. but also, crying to roxanne really isn’t a vibe and i need therapy probably.
Favorite VM costumes?
i feel like a fake fan saying this but i just would die for the moulin rouge dress!!! it’s the perfect dress i love it so much omg. i also love her mahler dress at TEB even though i think there was a costume malfunction (can’t remember if it was an earring deduction or something but tessa virtue looks great in anything to be honest). for scott, i would say either the mahler costume, latch costume, or the black shirt in long time running.
honourable mentions: TEB green seasons dress, prince outfits, MAHLER!!!! and latch (even though something about the mesh not matching tessa’s skin tone just doesn’t sit right with me, especially when the mahler mesh exists).
Least favorite VM costumes?
dark eyes or the original great gig in the sky dress. also that russian medley program when they won their first junior nationals, and honestly some of their junior costumes were questionable, but i will excuse them because let’s face it, fashion in the early 2000s was WHACK. for the modern era, i think my least favourite was the seasons dress tessa wore during the individual event at the olympics. i think i just really liked the green dress she wore at TEB and the pink one was just lacklustre in comparison. again, i repeat that tessa can pull off anything so the bar was really high for this one.
Favorite off-ice moment?
i’m interpreting this as when they aren’t performing so i guess it’s when tessa got injured during 2013 4cc and scott was so supportive because it would’ve been so easy for him to lash out at her? and every time they hug pre-performance/bucket of rice. i think i’ll think of something else in the future and add it here there are too many moments.
(edit: go pro canadian nationals 2015, i know they were on the ice but like it wasn’t competitive ice so i’m counting it here. and i guess i wouldn’t be a fan if i didn’t say their pre-skate hugs! but also post skate hugs and kiss & cry moments. okay i need to stop before this becomes a whole thesis.)
A song that you wish VM had skated to?
lover by taylor swift (specifically the first dance remix can you imagine them skating to the lyrics “Have I known you twenty seconds or twenty years?” and “Can we always be this close forever and ever?”), mary’s song (aka the song written specifically for vm and no one else) and maybe movement because they liked it. also i know mfd and patch fans are going to come @ me but i really wish they had skated to somewhere in time, but i know why they didn’t. and maybe pride and prejudice because tessa really seemed to like it!
Which program would you most like to see VM skate to again?
the great gig in the sky! it was so innovative at the time and they never performed it to it’s full potential. but for my own selfish pleasure: mahler or umbrellas.
What is your favorite picture of them?
the mahler one because, in kate virtue’s words, they got their dream. but also anytime they are hugging! i also love the pictures of them in sochi, they looked genuinely happy and i know, i know we don’t talk about sochi but really i think it’s so bittersweet and sometimes i feel sad but they did say after pyeongchang that their favourite olympics was sochi and so i’m happy for them. i also like the one in my profile pic, they look so happy!
How long have you been a VM fan?
my love for vm started since 2008 after watching umbrellas. i wasn’t a huge fan like i am now because it was just me rooting for them every time there was figure skating as they were the only team i knew and supported. they were a huge deal and every time figure skating was on i’d always watch them and cheer for them (also because i didn’t actually know any other team that well). it eventually evolved to an obsession but umbrellas was what introduced me to them, i remember being so proud of them after seeing mahler at the 2010 olys because they were my team (weird, i know). i wasn’t that into figure skating after that but i got back into it around 2012-13 ish. a true fan though? i only started watching their non-skating related things i.e. interviews etc post 2012, so i guess that’s when i started becoming a “fan”. as for when i found fan threads, let’s just say it was around 2015 because i was curious as to whether they would continue competing, and i also didn’t know who to root for in ice dance.

I did backtrack videos and interviews and pictures and I try to credit everything as best as I can.

Just my two cents on D/W vs V/M popularity in Japan. I lived in Japan for about 2 yrs+ and I’m pretty sure Asian fans, especially the Koreans, love V/M since forever. While it’s true that D/W got a lot of shows in Japan but it was only around 2013-2015 when they were pushed as the world’s best (world champs, Oly champs, etc.). If I’m not mistaken, JSOI never invited D/W though, and that’s one of the biggest shows there. Oh, V/M always asked for TEB because they love France
I think D/W did JSOI in 2017 but since SOI is always so early it’s very possible most competing skating was unavailable for that tour. From what I can tell both D/W and TS has a substantial amount of tour opportunities but I do expect a big rise for TS in the near (and not so near) future.
