Five Times Atticus Lincoln Knew He Was in Love
a/n: this fic was inspired by and is dedicated to the wonderful @teammorningglory ! you’re one of the best people I’ve met throughout my time writing fics, and I’m so endlessly grateful for all of your support!
"I feel like I'm on top of the world," Amelia grinned, pulling off her coat and tossing it over the back of his couch. "God, I love this feeling."
"You saved his life," Link muttered, walking up behind her. "You did an incredible job." She turned around to face him, the enthusiasm on her face still evident as she threw her arms around his neck, jumping up into him and laughing happily.
"We should celebrate." He raised his eyebrows at her, watching her face contort as she pulled away and glanced around his bare apartment.
"How are we celebrating?" Amelia simply grinned and grabbed the collar of his shirt, pulling it towards her until his face was close enough to hers for her to kiss him, which she did.
"Donuts." She let go of him and jumped away, running over to the counter and grabbing his car keys. "I'll be back; stay here." She ran out the door of his apartment, leaving Link standing there with a warm feeling in his chest and a huge grin spread across his lips.
Amelia returned later with a box of donuts in hand, dropping it on the counter and eagerly pulling one out, lightly tapping it against his and muttering, "Cheers!" before shoving the whole thing in her mouth, causing Link to laugh before doing the same.
"Cheers to what?" He muttered through a mouthful, covering his mouth with his hand as he chewed.
"Cheers to us, being incredible doctors, and to being together. Even if the one time we actually have a date, it gets interrupted."
"Interrupted by your genius," he added, grinning as her cheeks turned red and she glanced down at the floor below her, while Link was unable to take her eyes as he stared at her, utterly enamored by the woman standing in front of him.
-----------
She'd left him sitting alone in the plant room just a minute earlier, but his hands tightly braced the armrest of the chair, and he breathed heavily as he looked at the door that had just shut.
She'd told him she was pregnant, and he was terrified. And then, she opened up about her fears, and all of his didn't matter anymore because he was overwhelmed with a feeling of protection and love for her.
Which terrified him in a different way, thinking of that word and what it meant for a future they may or may not have.
He pushed himself off of the chair, his legs seemingly moving out themselves of the room and down the hall until he fell back into the seat across from his best friend, who stared at him as she waited for him to say something. He cleared his throat.
"I think I love her."
"That's big," Jo leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest and cocking her head to the side.
"I told her that no matter what she wants to do, I'm in, and then she left, so I don't know what's happening, but I think that I don't even care what happens with the baby because I just want to be with her."
"Yeah, I'd say you're in love. I've never seen you like this."
"I've never been like this," he muttered, slumping down in the seat. "I don't think I've ever felt this in my entire life."
"Not even with Bronwyn?"
"Not even close."
-----------
"Stay tonight, please?" Link sighed softly, not wanting to disappoint her and tell her he couldn't.
"I've got a morning shift; I need to go home and get some sleep," he spoke, glancing down at their intertwined hands, hers tugging him into the bedroom behind her.
"You can sleep here; I won't wake you up, I promise." She grinned toothily and stuck out her pinky. "It's the least you can do."
"The least I can do?"
"Well, you're the reason that all I want to do is cuddle, so I think that you should have to be the one to cuddle me." He smiled at the reference to her pregnancy, something he was still figuring out how to settle in his mind as it still felt so foreign and new, but still something that hit him with a wave of joy at each mention of it.
"Okay," he started softly, allowing her to tug him into the bedroom and close the door behind them. "But, no funny business. I really do need to get some sleep."
"None." Amelia walked over to her drawers, pulling off her cardigan and tossing it on the bed behind her, replacing her shirt with one Link recognized well.
"Is that my shirt? Why do you have that here?"
"Because I wanted it," she muttered, kicking off her pants and flopping back onto the bed. Link picked up the clothes from the floor and changed into another one of his shirts in her drawers. "Hey, you don't get to steal that," she protested, crossing her arms over her chest and pouting her lip out.
"I don't get to wear my own shirt?" She shook her head and rolled her eyes, holding her hands out. Link took them and joined her on the bed.
When they finally settled, with Amelia's back pressed tightly against his chest and their hands intertwined and resting together over her small stomach, he nuzzled his face in her neck, happily breathing in the smell of her perfume and dreaming of the future together he knew he wanted.
-----------
He glanced down at Amelia in his arms, her face pressed gently against his chest and her snores muffled by the fabric of his shirt.
It'd taken her hours to settle after spending far too long with her head over the toilet, with Link feeling utterly helpless as he held back her hair and muttered soft words in an attempt to comfort her, but knowing that there was nothing he could truly do.
She'd crawled into bed afterward, pulling the blankets up over her body, and instinctively curled into him, not saying a word as she squeezed her eyes shut and steadied her breathing. Link didn't make a noise but wrapped his arms around her tightly and pressed his lips against the top of her head, gently pulsing a kiss against her hair every time her body shuddered against his.
As he looked down at her, only illuminated by the sliver of moonlight creeping through his bedroom window, he couldn't help but feel a calming warmth inside of him, an instinct to pull her closer and hold her tighter.
He knew that in a few hours, she would wake, and the cycle would start all over again; her loss of appetite, any food she managed to eat coming back up hours later, the cramping in her stomach, her endless complaints about the pressure on her bladder and cursing him out for the hormones she felt throughout the day at every slight inconvenience.
But, in the moment, he thought she looked incredibly beautiful, and he felt his heart beat faster as she moved her head in her sleep, his lips sliding to her forehead and her face gently tipping up towards him.
She wouldn't let him say it if she was awake, but knowing that she was fast asleep and wouldn't wake up unless he dragged her out of bed for breakfast, he whispered softly, "I love you."
-----------
"What are you doing out here?" Link asked as he walked into the kitchen, glancing at the clock on the stove and raising his eyebrows at Amelia, who was sitting on the kitchen counter in the wee hours of the night when he was barely awake enough to notice she had slipped out of his embrace.
"I can't sleep," she muttered, glancing away from him. Link pouted his lip and reached out to take her hand, which she pulled away from him.
"What is it?"
"I don't think that I'm going to be a good mom," her chin quivered, and a hand subconsciously wrapped around her stomach. "I don't know if I can do it."
"I think that you're going to be an incredible mother," he whispered, reaching up to thumb away a column of tears from her face, bringing his thumb backward to brush her hair away from her cheek. She wrapped her legs around him, gently pulling him closer to her until he was pressed against the counter, his hands bracing a grip on either side of her legs and his face close to hers. "And, if you ever think otherwise, I will tell you every reason why." She nodded slowly, and her hand found his as their eyes stayed locked on each other. "You are one of the kindest people I know, and you are incredibly selfless. You care about this baby so much, who you haven't even met, and I think the fact that you're worried means that you're going to be an amazing parent. And you, Amelia Shepherd, are a freaking superhero, and superheroes can do anything."
He stared into her eyes, and it was as if he could see everything inside of her brain; the slight edge of a laugh at what he'd said and the emotion building up inside she didn't quite know how to vocalize. He laughed gently and brought a hand up to her cheek, and she rested her head against it. His lips turned upward into a small smile, and he stared at her in silence for a moment until his mouth formed the words he'd never spoken before.
"I'm in love with you."

jitters
“Tomorrow’s your first day of school, are you excited?” Amelia asked her daughter as she settled the girl down for bed.
“No.” Addison meekly said.
“What are you worried about?” Amelia asked her daughter, only to receive a shrug in response.
“I’ll miss you.”
“I’m going to miss you too, but it’ll be like when you did daycare at the hospital. You’ll just do more learning then you do at the hospital.” Amelia comforted. “You know, your brothers first day of school he was really really scared.”
“What?” Addison gasped, not believing her brother could be afraid of anything.
“Yep, he would not stop crying after we dropped him off. I think it’s because he was going to miss you. It’s okay to be scared, Addie.” She reached out to move a strand of her daughters hair away from her face, placing a kiss on her daughters forehead. “Goodnight, I love you, I’ll see you in the morning.” She closed the door behind her.
________________________________________________
“I’m so excited dad, all of my friends are in my class.” Scout excitedly said while he shoved a waffle into his mouth.
“That’s good, but make sure you stay focused.” Link said, internally cringing, he never thought he’d be a dad nonetheless that dad.
“I know, it’s going to be awesome though. 3rd grade seems really fun.”
“Don’t you look adorable.” Link mentioned as his daughter and girlfriend walked into the kitchen.
“Why thank you.” Amelia sarcastically said, knowing he directed the comment to their daughter.
“I guess you too.”
“Addie, your going to love school so much.” Scout commented, his mother asked him last night to really hype school up since his little sister was sacred. “You’ll make sooooo many friends, and you’ll get to play outside and learn things, and stuff”
“Hmm.” Addison hummed reaching out for the plate rested near the usual spot where she eats.
“What are you most excited for?” Scout coaxed, only to receive a shrug. “You get to learn about penguins, you really like penguins.”
“Yeah.” Mumbled the little girl, until she ‘accidentally’ spilled her orange juice all over herself. “Oh, looks like I’m messy. I can’t go.”
“Hmm, not how that works but nice try munchkin.” Amelia sighed, getting up to go help her daughter clean up and change into a new outfit. “Come on let’s go.”
“Ugh.” Addison sighed loudly, following her mother.
“She doesn’t seem too happy.” Scout noted.
________________________________________________
“Mom, being dropped off by you is for babies. We can ride the bus, stop worrying.” Scout said whilst hugging his mother at the bus stop.
“No, you know what I’ll drive you two.” Amelia anxiously stated.
“Mom, it’s fine if you drop us off you’ll never leave, and Addie will refuse to leave your side. We got this right?” Scout looked down at her little sister who was vigorously shaking her head no.
“He’s got a point Mia.” Link whispered into her ear.
“Okay.” Amelia wearily said. “I love you both so so so much, have a happy day.” She leaned down to hug each of her children, tears forming in her eyes when she realized her daughter had tears in her eyes.
“Have a good day, hope you guys learn lots.” Link said wrapping his arm around his girlfriends waist to ground her.
“Bye.” Scout waved back to his parents tightly holding his little sisters hand as the pair walked onto the bus. “We’ll sit here. It’s not to close to the front and not to far back, it’s a nice spot.”
“How long will this take?” Addison meekly asked.
“To get to the school about 10 minutes, so half an episode of ‘Max and Ruby.’ Actual school will be like 7 hours.” Scout stated.
“7 hours?!” Addison repeated startled.
“It goes by quick don’t worry.” Scout smiled still holding tight to his sisters hand.
“I want to go home.” The younger Lincoln started to cry.
“Hey, I was really scared my first day. But it got better it’s going to be a lot of fun. And everyone else is also really scared.” Scout confessed to his little sister.
“I know mommy told me.” She smiled slightly, happy that her brother admitted he’d been scared before.
“She did?”
________________________________________________
“It’s going to be okay. There’s no need to worry.” Scout assured his little sister as they made their way down the kindergarten hall.
“I wanna go home.”
“I know but this is your stop.” Scout smiled as the pair made it to the door. “Alright you can go in now.”
“Your not coming?”
“No I gotta go to my class.” He kneeled down so he was at her height to hug her, once he stood up he gently nudged her into the room.
“No Scout!” Addison exclaimed.
“Okay, I’ll tell you what. After dinner I’ll sneak us cookies if you go in.” The girl seemed to consider this and begrudgingly walked in. “Have a fun time!”
________________________________________________
“Addison!” Scout shouted trying to grab his sisters attention as he walked over to where she was standing waiting for him by the school bus.
“Scout!” She exclaimed running up to him pushing him back into a hug.
“How was it?”
“It wasn’t that scary. But I like to be with you and mommy.” Addison confessed confidently walking into the school bus making her way to where they sat previously.
“What about dad?” Scout giggled.
“Hmm, I guess. He’s kind of lame he likes baseball.”
“Hey I like baseball.”
“That makes you lame too.”
________________________________________________
“Oh my sweet kiddos!” Amelia exclaimed as her two kids exited the school bus and went to engulf their mother in a hug.
“Mommy I made this for you.” Addison handed her mother a colorful piece of paper.
“Thank you so much, that was very sweet of you to think of me.” Amelia picked her daughter up propping her on her hip was the three walked back to their home. “How was your day Scout?”
“It was really fun, especially recess all of my friends are there and we raced the entire time.”
“Sounds exhausting.” His mother dramatically exclaimed.
“And you munchkin?” Amelia asked her daughter who was leaning her head against her shoulder.
“It wasn’t that scary, I didn’t make any friends yet. The teacher is really nice though.”
“Don’t worry you’ll make friends in no time. I’m glad it wasn’t as scary as you expected it to be though.”
“There are my favorite champs.” Link happily greeted as his family walked through the door. “How was everyone’s day?”
“Really good dad.” Scout smiled fishing into his backpack to show him the baseball book he had picked up at the library.
“Looks like an awesome read.” Link commented, whilst taking his daughter from her mothers grasp. “And what about you Princess.”
“I’m not a princess.” Addison dramatically exclaimed.
“Oooookay whatever you say.” Link jokingly said.
“It wasn’t that scary.” She proudly smiled.
“I’m glad.” Link smiled at his wife who was happily gazing at her family. “You know tonight’s special, soooooo we get to have ice cream. After dinner though.”
“Scout does that mean you can’t sneak us cookies?” Addison asked her brother.
“Did you bribe your sister?” Amelia asked shocked, slightly proud that her son had been resourceful.
“Addie that was supposed to be between you in me.” Scout whisper shouted.
“Ahh, it’s fine let’s do ice cream aaaaand cookies.” Amelia smirked, the first day of school seemed to be a success.

hi! my weekend has been pretty awesome but busy, so I finally have a moment to chill! I hope yours has been good as well <3
I remember clicking post because I was on facetime with my friend (who had been trying to convince me to post fics for a while) when I did it and I super freaked out and nearly deleted it right after but then he threatened me and it stayed up!
I think the first comment I ever got was from you! and I think it was a mix of both? I do this weird thing when I get excited where I just word vomit and flail my hands around and I probably did that for a while and just freaked out. the thought of like real people reading my fics is so insane and I still have a super hard time fathoming it!
thank you for reading my fics and your super kind messages! it always makes my day :))

Paper Rings
hi! this is something that @teammorningglory suggested, where Amelia and Link meet on a dating app and explore their relationship. this is going to be a multi-part fic, so I hope you enjoy it!
------------------------
“All of his photos are with his mom. He looks like he would spend the whole time talking about her.”
“Amelia, stop being so picky. You are looking on Tinder. You’re not going to find some perfect guy on here,” Meredith laughed, stirring her coffee. She walked up behind Amelia. “He’s hot,”
“He’s also 23, Mer. I think he’s a bit too young.” The brunette set the phone down on the table and sighed. “I don’t think I’m ever going to find someone.” Maggie picked up the phone. “What are you doing!”
“Swiping, you’re definitely not going to find anybody if you don’t swipe.”
“Maggie! Give it back!”
“Bailey did this for me, and that’s how I met Clive.” She swiped right, smiling as the screen changed. “Look, you have a match! His name is Daniel. He’s 40 and an English professor.” Meredith paused, glancing over at the photo Maggie was showing Amelia.
“Mm, nope. I went on a date with him a few months ago. Cece set us up. I definitely scared him off.” Amelia threw her head down onto the table. “Hey, you’re the one who told me not to give up. Just because you and Owen are done doesn’t mean there’s no one for you.” Maggie’s face perked up.
“Look at this guy,” she whispered. “He’s hot.” Amelia took the phone from her and gawked at the screen.
“Okay, but his name is Atticus. Who names a kid that?” The brunette asked as Meredith reached over her shoulder and swiped right. “Hey, stop!”
“You have a match! With Atticus,” Meredith sang, grabbing her bag from the chair beside her sister. “Give it a shot, let him buy you dinner. The worst thing that could happen is you hate him and get a free meal.”
------------------------
Amelia didn’t think she hated him, at least from the conversations they’d had through the messenger. He’d even surprised her when he didn’t want just a hookup, something she’d received from the other guys her sister had matched her with. She walked down the hallway, laughing softly as she read the cheesy pickup line he had sent her. “Mm, are you talking to Atticus,” Meredith asked. Amelia looked to her side and smiled.
“Actually, I am. And he goes by Link. I gotta give it to you. He’s not as terrible as I thought.”
“Are you going out?”
“Tomorrow night. We’re going out for Italian food.” Meredith smirked at her sister. “Stop getting your hopes up,” Amelia muttered, “Remember when you thought you found that perfect guy, and then you found out he hates single moms?”
“Don’t remind me.” Meredith took the phone from Amelia. “But look at him, you have to give it a chance. A real chance.”
“Give what a chance?” Alex asked as he walked up beside Meredith.
“Amelia’s going on a date with a guy named Atticus, who she met on tinder.” She handed the phone to the pediatric surgeon, and he swiped through the photos.
“Tinder? You’re really on tinder, Shepherd?” Amelia grabbed the phone back from him and blushed softly.
“Look, I just need to get over Owen, and tinder is the easiest way to find someone. Everyone in this hospital has dated each other. It’s gross.”
------------------------
“Red or blue?” Meredith looked up from the couch to see Amelia standing in front of her, holding two dresses. She pointed towards the dark blue dress.
“Blue, the red one is too bright for a fancy dinner date with Atticus.”
“When are you going to stop mocking his name? I already told you he goes by Link,” Amelia groaned. She dropped down onto the couch, sinking into the cushions.
“Because what parents curse their child with the name Atticus? You have to find out why he’s named that.”
“I don’t even know why I’m doing this. I haven’t gone on a date in forever. I’m going to be so awkward and make terrible conversation and then accidentally tell him about all of my emotional baggage, and then I’ll scare him away.” Meredith raised an eyebrow at Amelia and set down the book she was reading.
“Go put on your dress.” She watched as the neurosurgeon slowly stood up, walking up the stairs with the dark blue dress in hand. A minute later, Amelia returned to the living room wearing the dress.
“This is too much.”
“Stop, you look hot. New haircut, fancy dress, did you shave?”
“This isn’t a hookup. But, I did.” Amelia adjusted the straps on her dress and checked her phone. “He’s gonna be here soon. He said he’d pick me up at 8.”
“I’ll answer the door, embarrass him a little bit. This is fun!” Meredith exclaimed. “Are you wearing heels? I have the black ones up in my room, the ones that pinch a little.” She stood up from the couch. “Stay here. I’ll go grab them.” Amelia unlocked her phone, a text from him saying he was on his way that’d been delivered a few minutes ago. They’d started texting earlier that day, when Amelia had given him her phone number, claiming it was for convenience. Meredith came back down just as the doorbell rang. She widened her eyes at Amelia. “Here,” she whispered, “I’ll get the door.” Amelia took the heels from her and slipped them on, waiting out of view of the door. She could hear Meredith open it.
“Oh, I must have the wrong house,” a male voice spoke.
“No, I’m Amelia’s sister. You must be Atticus,” Meredith greeted, sticking out her hand for him to shake.
“Link, actually, no one calls me Atticus. Uh, where’s Amelia?” Amelia stepped forward into the hallway, waving awkwardly at him.
“Hi,” she whispered, walking up to the door. “Thank you, Mer. You can go.” Meredith stepped back, patting her sister’s shoulder as she did.
“Be safe!” Amelia turned back to the man in front of her after Meredith had walked out of view.
“Sorry about her, she wanted to meet you.” He grinned toothily down at her.
“It’s fine.” He paused, looking into her eyes. “You look beautiful. I got you these,” he presented her with a small bouquet of roses as she blushed at him, looking down at her feet.
“Thank you,” Amelia whispered, taking a moment to smell the white roses. She looked back up at him. “We should get going.”
“Right,” he said, opening the front door and holding it open for her. He led her to the car in the driveway, unlocking it and holding the passenger door open for her.
“Thank you.” Link smiled at her before closing the door and walking around to the other side of the car. He sat down in the driver’s seat and started the car.
“Okay, first stop, Angelini’s.” Amelia looked over at him.
“First stop?” He nodded.
“Hey, I’ve got this all planned out. As dumb as it sounds, I take dates very seriously. Even tinder dates.” He quickly glanced over at her. “You look surprised.”
“I just, why are you on tinder? Guys like you don’t use tinder.”
“I could say the same for you.” He backed out of the driveway and began to drive down the street. “I just moved here. I don’t start work for a while, and I wanted to meet people.”
“Do you do this a lot? Plan out romantic tinder dates?” He shook his head.
“You’re my first tinder date. Something about you, I can’t place my finger on it.”
“Something about my online dating profile, you mean.” Link laughed as his lips turned up into a grin. “Very chivalrous, Link.”

Birthing Class
Amelia sat down in the chair, kicking her feet up onto the empty seat next to her and leaning forward to tie her shoes. She struggled to reach them as Link walked into the lounge, smiling at her before rushing over and tying her shoes for her. “How’re you feeling?” He asked, looking up at her with a wide smile.
“Tired. My feet hurt.” She pouted at him, leaning back into the chair. “I wanna go home and sleep.”
“Not today. We have the birthing class at 3, remember.” Amelia groaned, rolling her head back onto her shoulders.
“When I’m in labor, I’m not going to be thinking about my breathing, Link.” He lifted her feet off of the chair and sat down in it, laying her legs down across his lap as he massaged her calves. “We know how babies are born. We’re doctors.”
“Think of it for me, then. I barely know anything about it. I haven’t done any sort of OB rotation since I was an intern.” His pager buzzed, causing him to roll his eyes as he stood up. “I’ll meet you upstairs at 2:50. Take it easy, Mia, I love you.” Link leaned down to kiss her quickly before leaving the lounge.
----------------------------------------
She checked her phone, the time reading 2:59. Amelia took a breath as she walked into the room, not seeing Link anywhere. The instructor noticed her and smiled. “Are we ready to start?” Amelia shook her head.
“My boyfriend should be here in a second.” Amelia sat down on the mat, checking her phone every other second. After another minute, Link came bursting through the doors, still in his scrubs. He ran over to Amelia and sat down with her.
“Sorry, surgery went long.” The instructor smiled at them as Link kissed the top of Amelia’s head.
“Okay moms, lean back into your partners.” Amelia did so, laying her head against Link’s chest as his arms wrapped around her. She sighed contently at the familiar feeling of his embrace, her body relaxing against him. She could feel her eyes struggling to stay open from the combination of her comfort and the long day she’d had.
“Link, I’m gonna fall asleep,” she whispered, listening to the instructor as she told the moms how to control their breathing.
“It’s less than an hour-long, Mia. We can go home and nap after.”
“Mm.” The class went on, Amelia struggling to stay awake for the rest of the hour, Link nudging her every few minutes to keep her from falling asleep.
“Okay, let’s go home, Mia.” She sat up, taking in her surroundings as the other couples stood up. “Did you fall asleep?”
“Just for like, a second there. It’s over?” He nodded, holding out his hand for her. Amelia took it and slowly stood up while using his arm for balance. Link’s arm wrapped around her waist to support her.
“It wasn’t that bad, was it?” Amelia shrugged and placed a hand on the underside of her stomach.
“The other moms were annoying. They really think labor is going to be this calm and laid back thing.” Link laughed. “You too.”
“Amelia, I’m sure it’s not that bad-”
“Yeah, you don’t have to do anything.” They walked into the elevator, Amelia leaning against the wall and sighing. “Will you rub my feet when we get home?” Link smiled and nodded his head.
“Of course.”
A/N: Hey everyone. This is really short but I figured I’d post something. It’s been a really long week and I haven’t been writing much, but I’m trying to do more. This was a request from @teammorningglory
Thanks for all the support!

Halloween
“So, what are we doing for Halloween?” An arm wrapped around her waist, Link’s breath in her ear. Amelia was surprised by Link’s voice as she set down her tablet on the nurse’s station and turned to face him.
“I didn’t think we were doing anything? I mean, he’s not going to remember anything until he’s like, 4 or something.” She said, rolling her eyes at her boyfriend. He titled his head to the side.
“What! Amelia, it’s Halloween! We have to get him a costume and at least go trick or treating with Meredith. It’s his first Halloween!” His pager went off, causing him to let out a sigh. “I gotta go. But, we have a week. Think about it!” She watched as she ran down the hallway, pulling out her phone to text Meredith.
AMELIA SHEPHERD: What are you guys doing for Halloween? Link is insisting we do something and I can get away with coming with you and the kids.
MEREDITH GREY: Trick or treating with Maggie. Be at our place at 5.
AMELIA SHEPHERD: You’re a lifesaver.
------------------------------------
“Link, just let me see.” Amelia stood outside the closed door of the nursery as her boyfriend refused to let her in.
“One sec, we’re almost ready.”
“What do you mean, “we’re”? Did you get a costume too? Link, I didn’t get anything!” She could hear her son cooing from inside the room. The door slowly opened, revealing Scout wearing a small Batman costume that was obviously too big for him.
“It’s the smallest one they had, but I figured he could be our little Batman. Even if he’s too tiny for it.”
“It’s adorable, Link.” Amelia smiled widely, taking note of the cape that was attached to the back of Link’s shirt.
“Mine was last minute, but we got one for you, too. So we can all be Batmans.” His voice was filled with excitement, obviously ecstatic for their first Halloween. Amelia took her son, resting him on her hip while Link ran into their bedroom, shortly returning with a cape for her to wear. He pinned it onto the back of her black shirt before stepping away to look proudly at his girlfriend. “There.”
“I love it, she whispered, looking up at him. Link pulled out his phone.
“Okay, smile you two.” Amelia grinned at the camera as Link attempted to get their son’s attention and take a picture. “There we go. Our first Halloween.” He leaned down to kiss her, before pulling away and checking his watch. “We gotta go to Meredith’s. We can get pictures of him and the kids there.” She laughed, shifting the baby on her hip and following Link out of their apartment. When they arrived at Meredith’s, they were greeted by the kids who were all eager to hold their little cousin. Link followed the kids into the living room with Scout in his arms, sitting down on the couch as they cooed over him. Amelia turned to Meredith.
“Thanks again for letting us tag along. Link wants all of our firsts to be special.” Meredith chuckled, walking towards the living room.
“Of course. You’re still family, you know. You can hang out with us whenever.” The group left the house soon after and began to walk around the neighborhood, the kids running up to each house to collect candy and taking turns pushing Scout in his stroller between houses. At the end of the night, the families ended up back at Meredith’s house. The older kids were spread out on the floor, Meredith and Maggie helping them to sort and trade their candy. Amelia and Link sat on the couch, holding their sleeping baby.
“I can’t believe he’s going to be that old one day,” she whispered, looking down at their son.
“I know.” Link laid his head against Amelia’s, allowing himself to relax.
“Auntie Amelia!” Zola exclaimed, standing up quickly. “This is for Scout.” Amelia smiled, taking the small candy bar from her niece.
“Aw, thank you, Zo. But he’s too little and can’t have candy yet. But,” she said, unwrapping the chocolate and taking it out, “I’ll eat it.” Amelia shoved the chocolate into her mouth and made a big deal of eating it, emitting laughs from the kids.
“What about you, Uncle Link? Do you want some candy?” Link smiled.
“Sure, Zo. That’d be great.” She kneeled down into the pile of candy before returning with another chocolate bar. Link took it with a grin, thanking the little girl in front of him.
“Are you going to come with us every Halloween? Because Scout can come too, and we can share all of our candy when he gets older.” Zola questioned. Amelia turned to look at Link who shrugged before looking at Meredith who smiled at her and nodded her head.
“I think so, would you like that?” Zola nodded quickly.
“Yeah! He can dress up with me next year. Or with Bailey and they can both be superheroes!” Bailey perked up in his Superman costume. “And you can come for Christmas and Thanksgiving too! And Easter!”
“We’ll see, Zo.” Zola took a step towards the couch.
“Scout’s a good baby. Ellis cried all time.” Zola stared at her little cousin who was curled up on his mother’s chest.
“He cries, too. But he’s tired.” Zola looked up at her Aunt.
“Can we babysit him sometime? Mommy can help us.” Amelia smiled, adjusting the baby.
“If your Mommy says yes, of course, Zo.” Zola grinned widely before turning back to her siblings on the floor and giving a piece of candy to Maggie.
“Look, we have free babysitting, now,” Link whispered into Amelia’s ear, gaining a soft laugh from her.
“Yeah, but that means we’ll have to take them some time. That’s how it works.” Link’s eyes widened. “It’ll be fine, they’ll be excited about a sleepover. Plus, they’re all pretty mesmerized by him so they’ll be calm.” The couple left Meredith’s house a few hours later after all the kids had fallen asleep. Amelia and Link successfully transferred the baby into his crib without waking him, changing him into a onesie before doing so. They settled into bed, the happy memories of the first Halloween as a family running through their minds as they fell asleep.
