Street Art and Calligraffiti - Write Your Name
Tumblr media
Last Tuesdasy, the 7th March, I met an artist whose generosity and finesse could not leave you insensitive. Daan Wille, alias TeamBlazin, is a calligrapher and visual artist from Hoofdorp. During a workshop in a school in collaboration with the Street Art Museum Amsterdam, I had the chance to see him work and experience how he managed to transmit his art to 22 children whose eyes were illuminated from the first stroke of pen.
The exercise was simple: write your name. The artist made a demonstration, and then encouraged the children to tame the pen and the paper by themselves. Then he went to see them one after the other to write it with the precision and agility that preceded it - stroke by stroke. When the leaves were recovered at the end of the session, the imagination of the children was revealed: dragons, magic mushrooms, birds, robots ... that's why the artist likes to work with children: «children are pure and true».
Tumblr media
TeamBlazin commented that out of the 22 children maybe 5 have a real talent, and in consequence those were more concentrated and applied, than the others, and for him that is already good, a victory. They will not forget this morning. «It’s a small effort for a great reward» . Daan also likes to be back to school because is a way for him to practice, to improve and transmit, here it takes on a special resonance since the public is young and at the beginning of the school life. For TeamBlazin: «Art is of course very important at school, and everywhere, even in the bathroom, in fact the best ideas are found in the bathroom».  Children enjoyed this morning, and all are eager to meet the artist next week - from strokes to words!
Tumblr media
Street Art Museum Amsterdam and TeamBlazin - love from the first sight «We never forget the first person who trusted you, and who gave you a chance. We are know each other now for 2 years. We also have many things in common: we enjoy making people smile and happy. It’s something priceless.».
Tumblr media
“The first workshops with SAMA goes back 2 years ago now. The response of the people was very enthusiastic. Daan is a very talented man, and as he becomes known, from Amsterdam to New York, he makes his name and establishes his audience. Our role is to shed the light onto the path. This time, as part of De Alliantie Struikbuurt Project, Street Art Museum Amsterdam were invited to engage the local residents with a program of activities. One of the Mix is what has become a standard ‘Calligraffiti Workshop’ with TeamBlazin. In this case, together with TeamBlazin we shall work with the various ages of the St Henricus school students to create 2 banners which will be placed around the new building representing new learning methods! - reflects Anna Stolyarova, founder and managing director Street Art Museum Amsterdam”, echoes Anna Stolyarova, SAMA founder and managing director.
«I love lettering, it allows you to write a letter in 100 different ways», says TeamBlazin. I can easily say that TeamBlazin that it is a “self made men”: he left school at the age of 18 - he could not really connect himself to the system, the classic school studies, he would rather dream of the new horizons - he likes nature and thrills. Skateboarding and snowboarding, for example, lead him to several competitions in Europe. Later, he worked as florist as well as in a coffeeshop, and one day he decided to organise some parties, but for party, as you know, you need to have flyers and posters, so he started to study photoshop, illustrator and all the professional software in general. His dexterity and his talent attracted curiosity of others, so friends began to ask him to make ‘designs’ for them. In 2000, he decided to open his own company: Blazin Industries, but it wasn’t until 2009 that he immersed himself in practicing calligraphy - a movement that rose from graffiti art, custom lettering mixed with logo types. Daan does not consider himself a street artist even if he sometimes works on streets or with street art projects. He has got more than one influences and does not lock himself in a specific art movement. Thus it is TEAM Blazin, for it feels like a team.
Tumblr media
«Team» because of the support around him too, the people who believe in him - he never feels alone. It’s like a spiritual team, besides, he likes to draw the parallel between calligraphy and «yoga». Calligraphy is a special moment when the body and the mind are in symbiosis «I was too digital, I wanted to find crafts». The term Calligraffiti - an art form that fuses calligraphy and graffiti - is a term in tribute to the artist that TeamBlazin has admired for years: Niels Shoe Meulman, known as «Shoe», who revolutionised the art of writing in 2007.
Tumblr media
According to TeamBlazin everyone can do it, and with this new form of art he finds a balance between writing (from the very essence of calligraphy on paper) and digital (through vectorisation on professional software).
Once at the SAMA’s HQ, he has the kindness of calligraphy the first name of my French colleagues, and me, we all leave with our personalised art of work!
youtube
There will be two more workshop like this one! I will be there for you, and of course active on social networks to share with you some small moments. Just here the link on TeamBlazin’s website:  http://www.blzn.com : you can follow him on Facebook and Instagram. Trust me, it’s fun to watch!

Calligraffiti, The Grand Finale
So, here is a little clip about the Calligraffiti Grand Finale!
youtube
To understand the sequence of the events we must to go back to Tuesday of the 21st March.  On the morning filled with sunshine and warm weather, TeamBlazin has been busy with preparation of the last workshop with St Henricus School.  At SAMA’s HQ he put on the colourful, very representative of the is sunny day, background on the two bigs banners.
Tumblr media
Then, on Tuesday 28th March on week later, everybody who participated in the previous 2 workshops in the classroom, aka about 20 children, the artist, and us,  walked to  Tante Ali, a neighborhood place = buurthuis, to created the final project together.
Tumblr media
The deliverables of the final project were 3 things:
1. A collage consisting of 4 little banners, which the kids cut and pasted for their school memories
2. A pre-selection of words written during the workshops for the “New Time and Us” exposition opening on 5th May in SAMA HQ
3. Two banners we coloured earlier hung on the fences around the construction work, filled with words the kids associated with their new school building.
Tumblr media
For the two banners, TeamBlazin and Roos Ootsdam, the teacher, selected some specifics words about renewal, future, pedagogy, and what the new building and mentality of the school represents from the children associations.
The words are written in black and pink. The banners will surround the new school building which is now under construction.
Tumblr media
Personally, I will never forget this experience. The contact with the children was pleasant and enlightening. They enjoyed it as much as we did. The meeting with TeamBlazin was great both on artistic and personal levels. I discovered a form of art that I did not know before, and for which I’m quite sensitive. And I got my name written by the big TeamBlazin! Success for all!  :))))

In 2015 we had an honour to create the wall in collaboration with the students of Huygens College and Stadsdeel West. Without the help of local residents and ABC-Alliantie this would be a hard job. Thank you every body and Happy New Year!

Street Art Museum Amsterdam - Confessions of the 5 year-old
Tumblr media
In March of 2012 Btoy, Uriginal and me put up the first paste-ups and painted a shutter of UGUR green grocer on Burg de Vlugtlaan.  The artworks were removed a few months later.
Tumblr media
In May we hosted Stinkfish and Bastardilla from Bogota Colombia. Their visit provoked communication from LaIra, who subsequently joined the crew a month later.
Tumblr media
It was also the year I took Stinkfish to Berlin and we met Alaniz who in August of 2012 created one of our first masterpieces - Tolerance. By the end of the year together with residents and housing corporations we created more than 10 artworks. This was not a good thing, for our project was called Tales of the Nine and should have kind of stayed that way.  Which walls do we include and which not? Which activities and workshops count and which we shall exclude from the history? Should we stop here and make a mini-book out of it all? Get on with our lives?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 2013 it became clear that not only did we receive some financial support but also the number of Walls to be painted or being offered has grown considerably. When H101 finished The Future of the Barrio on the 19th December 2013, he pictured the first 25 walls added to a collection.  The residents began to call us Open Air Museum, Street Art Museum, Our Museum.
Tumblr media
By popular demands from local people, municipality and housing corporations, city organisations such as 4en5Mei and Dialogue Dag, we were able to start the  2014 on a high note. We created a new foundation with the focus on Street Art Museum Amsterdam’s growth. And I went to study on how to turn the organic blob of a collection into a museum and subsequently managed to produce our first Urban Life Styles event with Mini-Vila.  We also grew as a crew and added a few artworks to our collection including Icy&Sot, Alex Senna, El Pez, Danny Recal. Paul Spies of Amsterdam Museum invited Street Art Museum Amsterdam to consult on bringing from New York “City as a Canvas” exposition. We introduced his team to Mick LaRock who ended up curating the story of graffiti and a connection between Amsterdam and NYC.
Tumblr media
In 2015 we successfully completed De Vlugtlaan “Four Seasons” project on ±44 metal shop shutters of almost 25 shops. This was our biggest until Schiphol Real Estate contacted us and offered an opportunity to create Office Walk with a Twist.  We also expanded to the West, direction center, in De Hallenkwartier with two monumental murals by SUSO33 and MATAONE/TEAMBLAZIN. Ambacht in de Beeld experience was overwhelming with over 100 people joining our table at some point - even if it was only to touch the pen and make one stroke, just like TeamBlazin would! Street Art Museum Amsterdam grew in many ways and one of the most important was our organisation, for now we had four people on a board of trustees and administrative assistance.
youtube
Last year, 2016, we finally got ANBI status. According to the 2 interns from Reinwardt Academy, with this accreditation we only needed AdLib installed and according to all the rules - we are a REAL MUSEUM. The board of trustees, consultants, volunteers and me began the work of the year - a proper funding plan to create stability for the foundation. Office Walk with a Twist made it to TEDx.Amsterdam Schiphol Side event. We received the funding for setting up AdLib from PBCultuurfonds.
Tumblr media
We hosted our first 5 interns with all of the up and downs.  We created 4 expositions and participated in 3 city events. We continued painting adding to the list Orticanoodles, Sandrine Boulet, Oliver Rednitz, Angelo Campos and Btoy.
Tumblr media
We also entered the age of technology by commencing the work on the first prototype of VR solution with Mario from OakOak. And when it comes to heritage we made our first banner installation picturing the walls that got demolished. The banners will be reviving the murals and intend to last for a year during the construction of the new buildings. We assisted over 15 independent researchers with their thesis’. Our guides introduced the collection to over 20 class groups from 17 colleges and schools from more than 7 countries.
Tumblr media
And that’s why in 2017 with joy and dignity we are welcoming all to our Street Art Museum in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
We start by changing the name of the Stichting with Glamorous Outcasts gone, as our mission accomplished and through us alone Nieuw-West being on the Map – iAmsterdam, Taiwan Business Weekly, Het Parool, AD, TEDx, DRUM, Mobile-Marketing, to name a few publications.
Stichting Street Art Museum Amsterdam, on its 5 years anniversary, are welcoming you to the years of innovation, experimentation and fun on the streets of our Amsterdam.

Future - Mataone (BE) TeamBlazin (NL)
“There is no future without a past, because what is to be cannot be imagined except as a form of repetition.” ― Siri Hustvedt, The Summer Without Men
Tumblr media
In December 2015 we got an opportunity to play with the words.
Repetition and Evolution
It was an interesting year for Amsterdam, as Amsterdam (Historical) Museum brought in from New-York City as a Canvas expo.  The expo shared the images and stories of the birth of Graffiti movement in NYC and connected it to the 80-90s in A’DAM.
Tumblr media
What bothered Street Art Museum Amsterdam a little was the fact that no live action was part of that expo that would connect the past with the present of Amsterdam, after all artists like SHOE and DELTA have inspired many ones of today TEAMBLAZIN and MATAONE.
Tumblr media
“what fueled the drive of graffiti artists in the 1970s and 1980s is the same energy that is present in the activities of street artists emerging during the beginning of the 21st century”
Bojan Maric
So, we approached the municipality to grant the permission to create a couple of walls that would be marking the expo for many years after it took place, and that’s how Curiosity and Future were born.
About the Future...
In order to connect Graffiti of yesterday to Graffiti of tomorrow, we asked the students of today from the Huygens College (100 of them to be precise) to tell us what FUTURE means to them.  Yes, we could have just commissioned the artists to paint the wall, and write their names there, but Graffiti is Social... It seems like an isolated, selfish act but it is not, as Dutch Graffiti Library can prove it.
Tumblr media
Graffiti is a written word. It is a name, a writer’s name. The skill of graffiti writing comes from constant practice of writing one’s name, embellishing it with details, experimenting with its shape and form. In order to help the students, we asked TeamBlazin and Celand to give a series of 5 workshops to 5 classes of 20 students during which the students would learn the skill of calligraphy and write the words they believe represent FUTURE. The dialogue occurred and the youths told the writers what to write.
Tumblr media
“My word is on the wall”
.... screamed a teenage girl on her way to school, when she noticed that one out of the hundred words we collected was brought to live on the wall opposite her school.
We also asked the artists to nominate 3 calligraphy works for their artistic, intellectual and original merits.  The students whose works were picked got the prizes of Museum Card, a Calendar and an Artwork.
The words - shared and written - represent the dialogue between the artists and the youths, the future, the past and the present. Words are our means of the story telling, co-creating and co-enjoying our heritage, heritage that comes from us.
youtube
Below is a poem by one of the students for the theme of the year in 2014 - Future, and it’s a story...
Tumblr media
THE STORY OF A BOY WHO DREAMS OF SUCCESS. WILL HE MAKE IT THERE?

The Craft of Writing : My  name is …
In contemporary world of swiping and clicking, the values of the old-fashioned craft of cursive writing is being put into question.  But psychologists and neuroscientists say it is far too soon to declare handwriting a relic of the past. New evidence suggests that the links between handwriting and broader educational development run deep. Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they also remain better able to generate ideas and retain information. In other words, it’s not just what we write that matters — but how. More areas of the human brain are engaged when children use cursive handwriting than when they do keyboard. The fluid motion employed when writing script enhances hand-eye coordination and develops fine motor skills, in turn promoting reading, writing and cognition skills. This craft also helps us to interpret valuable cultural resources—historical documents, ancestors’ letters and journals, handwritten scholarship.
From Calligraphy to Calligrafitti.  Tools, Methods, Techniques. From feather through spray can to pen. The participants can observe the master and together with his help make an artwork with their name on it. With this workshop, we would like to pay respect to calligraphy and explore the fun ways of playing with letters through the craftsmanship of calligraffiti master BLAZINhttps://instagram.com/teamblazin/.
