I think it will come as no surprise to anyone here that this week has been rough. The news has been pretty devastating and it has been pretty hard to feel hopeful or like anything we do can make an impact. On top of all of that, I have personally been having a bad week with my PCOS, which has made me even more downtrodden. However, today I ran my 8th 5k in 8 months. The journey hasn't looked quite like I thought it would, due to injuries and a pretty horrible winter there were a lack of "official" 5ks to register for and recovery and rest time that were needed for me to heal that led to me not being able to run for the full time of each 5k. However, I have still done them! I have still pushed myself to run for as long as I can, walk for a bit, then run again. I have still pushed myself to do something that was hard, outside my comfort zone, and that didn't match my ideal of what I thought I would be doing. And that is what we have to do to try and steer this country towards something resembling civility, love for your fellow human beings, and respect for life & liberty. Things really suck right now and I am not going to stand on a soap box and say I know they will get better and I certainly know they have been bad before and that this is a representation of a build of hostility and anger that has been brewing in this country for quite sometime - but, I am going to keep pushing. So, today I ran my 8th 5k in 8 months to raise money for Beto O'Rourke and despite being so sad and angry and not wanting to do it, I pushed through and ran my best time yet. Believe that asylum seekers shouldn't be jailed without due process and that their children shouldn't be locked up and that we should reunite the families we have already torn apart? You can find a rally near you here. Also, I voted in my local primaries this week. Angry or sad about what is happening on a federal level? Feel like you can't make an impact? Voting in your local elections is the best way to start enacting change. These are the people who can hear your voice and refuse to vote yes on inhumane bills, these are the people who can end gerrymandering, these are the people who can get rid of the electoral college. So pay attention and help those you support and show up to vote! And just to leave you with something positive, I will say that what really got me through my 5k today was that the first song that started playing was Afterlife by Ingrid Michaelson and wow did that hit home today! I don't know what will happen, I don't know if this will get better, but her words of "We are We are We are going to be alright We got We got We always got the fight in us" meant a lot today.
